LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness Happy New Year! For many of us, a new year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Brentwood Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to inspire you to make lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. When it comes to anything in life — business, finance, food, home, and personal health — it’s not what you do some days that move the needle — it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days — it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling, and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Kathryn Hurley-Dhall, executive director of the Nashville chapter of Wags & Walks, advocates rescue as the go-to option for anyone interested in having a dog as a pet. Wags & Walks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a dedicated community of dog lovers working to reduce euthanasia in local

shelters and increase awareness of rescue dogs being wonderful pets. They are dedicated to giving adopters and fosters the best experience possible, and believe there is a dog for everyone. Read more to find out all about them and how Brentwood Lifestyle readers can help.
HOW DID WAGS & WALKS NASHVILLE START?
"After working for our Los Angeles branch for four-plus years, my husband and I moved to Nashville. While the plan was to work for LA remotely, it became apparent that Nashville was in need of another strong rescue partner. The shelters were overcrowded, and amazing dogs were suffering. It ended up feeling like fate when we found an abandoned pit bull and her puppies, and I never looked back."

one can find their perfect match with Wags & Walks. We also want to balance the fun energy with highlighting that the South is truly in a crisis and that rescue should be the only option when millions of dogs are still dying in shelters every year."
DO YOU HAVE ANY LIFE-CHANGING PERSONAL DOG STORIES?
"Meeting my dog, Jax. Although I have four pups now, Jax was my first love. We rescued him from a neglectful home; we knew he was ours. I grew up with small dogs, and adopting a pit bull mix was not something most young adults were doing, but my husband and I knew the best way to change stigmas was to give first-hand experiences to our friends and family. He is the driving force behind everything I do and has changed more minds and hearts than I could have ever imagined."

EVER MADE?
"Oh, so many. This feels impossible to answer, but it has to be Pickles. He was a big ol’ pittie that was slated to be euthanized for no reason other than he was big, a pit bull, and liked tennis balls (maybe a little too much!) We were told over and over he was going to be dangerous and shouldn’t be trusted, but we knew they were wrong. He has been living with small kids and other dogs for years and is a cherished member of their family."
HOW HAVE YOU SEEN DOGS HELP WITH PEOPLE'S MENTAL HEALTH?
"I’ve seen dogs improve people’s mental health and are a major factor in changing people’s lives, if not saving them. The unconditional love and bond that dogs show us can heal people on a level that is hard to put into words. Caring for dogs and the responsibility and dedication that you show them is always matched tenfold. It’s magical."

"FOSTERING IS EASIEST WAY TO SAVE TWO LIVES." WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THOSE THINKING ABOUT FOSTERING/ADOPTING?
"Fostering is the easiest way to save two lives. The life of the dog that you are fostering and the open kennel that provides for a new dog at the shelter. Overcrowding in shelters results in euthanasia, and fostering is the most direct way to impact that. Wags & Walks asks for a two-week commitment (everyone can do anything for two weeks!), is cost-free, and we have an incredible support system for you. Plus, anyone interested in adopting can get a real feel for if they are ready for a lifetime commitment."

"Who am I beyond a supporting character?"
28
M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS
When Caitlin Estell moved from Los Angeles to Nashville during the pandemic to be with her then-boyfriend, now-husband, radio and television personality Bobby Bones, she says she didn’t expect the major life shift that occurred. “I went from having a normal life, with only my friends following me on socials, to moving to a city where my husband is very public. I don’t think you really know if you like something until you experience it,” she says, speaking of the sudden exposure to his fanbase. “I wasn’t used to feedback about myself from anyone who didn’t know me, and I hadn’t yet built up the muscles to turn a blind eye to those opinions." Caitlin says she and her husband and are very opposite in that way. "He’s very much public and would prefer to post what he’s having for breakfast every day on the internet,” she says. “We’re different, not worse, not better. The pandemic, mixed with lifestyle adjustments, caused me to have some anxiety, even more so than I was having in regular life.” After moving from a city and friends she loved to a town where she knew no one but Bobby, Caitlin says she wondered what kind of life she’d have here, especially when the world was shut down. “Then I had to figure out how to have a life when the world wasn’t shut down.” Now, she loves Nashville and has a very supportive friend group, but finding the answer took two years and a lot of self-discovery. “I realized I needed to figure out what I actually think about myself, so I’m not cosigning things, whether positive or negative, and letting that shape who I am as a human. I got caught in that for a bit, mostly the negativity, but even the positive things. People might comment that you always have cute shoes, and you think, ‘Oh no, people think I always have cute shoes! Now I always have to have cute shoes! All the time!’”
Caitlin discovered that looking for her identity in what other people either liked about her or didn’t was something she was no longer willing to do. Having been in therapy after a traumatic experience as a child, Caitlin says she knew help from a professional would allow her to take positive steps to adjust to her new life and manage her anxiety. “When things got hard, I knew I needed to talk some of this out. I thought, ‘I can’t take this home to Bobby every night.’ He’d lived this life for so long. A lot of the things that would really rock me were so normal to him that he couldn’t fully comprehend why I’d put so much stock in other people’s opinions. But I’ve never had strangers say things about me before. This world is wild, and I needed help. “I think another reason I needed therapy was about losing my identity. Most of the time, my husband’s job makes him the main character, and I needed to figure out, ‘Who am I beyond a supporting character?’ I was always introduced as Bobby’s something, his girlfriend or fiancée or wife.” Caitlin felt a deep desire to figure out who she wanted to be and how to “make this life familiar, to find something that I enjoy and how not to lose myself in the shadow of another person, even though that shadow is beautiful.” “I’m at a place where I like myself. I’m at peace with who I am right now," she says. "I’m not sharing my experience over the last few years to get love. At the end of the day, regardless of what anyone thinks of my mental health/self-love journey, I will still love myself.” As for those walking through life with her, Caitlin says, “I have such a great support system. I had a conversation with a friend about mental health the other day. He’s on his own journey, and we can really get in the weeds about the subject, and he was proud I was doing this interview. "I’m not sharing my experience over the last few years to get love."
It might seem trivial, but it’s such a step for me. I used to hide from everyone. It’s not that I care what strangers say to each other about me; it’s the thought of someone I love seeing what they’re saying and having a negative opinion.” Assured that her loved ones could read anything and still love her, she says, “It’s

that safety of having people who love and know you. It allows you to be yourself. If you don’t know where you hold your value, or if it is constantly tied to the opinions of others, it’s a never-ending game. You’re going to be constantly looking for that affirmation. You have no control over your value at that point.”

Bellagio Couples Massage Suite
2024 is still fresh and new, so make a resolution to take some time just for you. Wellness tourism is booming all across the globe, so you can combine exploration and self-care all in one. I made the sacrifice to sample spas all across the globe (in the name of research of course), and here are some of my recommendations for ultimate relaxation (with a side of adventure).
BELLAGIO HOTEL AND SPA, LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
Vegas is one of my favorite places anywhere. The spa at Bellagio is a mustvisit. Take your significant other and book the signature couples package. It includes a couple's massage in a beautifully appointed suite. After relaxing with an hour-long massage, when all of the tension has left your bodies, step into a private couples' pool next-door. In this decadent spa, you'll find a bottle of chilled champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. Included in the package is use of the private pool for 45 minutes. It wasn't only romantic, but relaxing. When is the last time you truly connected with your partner with no distractions, just the two of you? I guarantee this will be the highlight of your trip. Want more? Bellagio has opulent solo facilities as well. In the ladies’ area, there are four (yes, four!) separate jacuzzi pools of varying temps. Multiple steam, sauna and even ice rooms. I guarantee you'll want to spend the entire day.
AYASOFYA HAMAM, ISTANBUL, TURKEY
This is one of the oldest Turkish Hammams in the entire world, in business since 1556. After operating for 450plus years, this establishment knows about pampering and self-care. Upon check in, and casting off street clothing, each guest is shown into a white marble cathedral-like room, with their own basin and faucet. It's like a large luxurious steam room in a sense. A plump, smiling Turkish grandmotherly sort greeted CONTINUED >

“You can combine adventure and self-care all in one.” me and began rinsing me with warm water, followed by a body scrub and full body mask. After rinsing off the mask, I was escorted to the warmed marble table in the center. After laying down, an industrial-sized bucket of frothy suds was brought over. Using a pillowcase of sorts to harness the bubbles, you are given a bubble wash. (I wonder if this is how my car feels at the wash.) Lastly, before one last rinse, there's a brisk body mitt/brush that brushes all the dead skin off, leaving the new soft skin to shine. (Side note: Expect more dead skin to come off than you ever realized. It is both startling and amazing.) I have never been so clean in all of my life; my skin was glowing when I left. After your time in the hammam, there's a refreshment break of fruit, tea and cherry juice. But wait! You aren’t done yet; it's time for an almost hour-long full body warm oil massage. I would go back to Istanbul just for this treatment alone.

HILTON LUXOR, LUXOR EGYPT
OK, so the previous two places sound amazing, right? But what about a hotel suite that has its own full spa? The Hilton Luxor regularly wins awards for their spa, but even better is the spa suite. Think of a beautiful hotel room on the Nile River, with its own outdoor whirlpool jacuzzi, but then add another entire suite of spa facilities including steam baths, sauna, hydrotherapy, massages and facials. You can have almost any spa treatment in the comfort of your own room and on your schedule. In Egypt, services are often open later than in America. We spent the day touring Luxor and its amazing temples, had dinner, then began our spa treatments from the comfort of our suite. Life changing. A massage is included in the room rate already. This is a room booked often by visiting celebrities, so make sure to reserve in advance.

Killjoy opened for business on April 1, but is no joke, except for its tongue-in-cheek name. Created on the dream of Stephanie Styll, Killjoy is a booze-free beverage shop located by The Loading Dock in Nashville. Not only do they offer alcohol-free beverages, but they also allow customers to taste the products and make sure they find an option they like. Alcohol-free wines, spirits and beers are still not widely known. Carrying 30 to 40 different varieties of beer and wine, they also offer functional beverages from ashwagandha mushrooms to CBD to Kava, as healthy alternatives. This shop also hosts weekly events, such as happy hours, wine tastings, book clubs and hikes. They also served stars backstage at the Country Music Awards. The name of the shop came from Stephanie's sense of humor. “It’s what people tend to think you CONTINUED >

In addition, they celebrated the New Year with a “Booze-Free” New Year’s Eve Bash. This New Year, Killjoy has two resolutions: “to provide sophisticated beverages to Nashville and to create community and change the way Nashville drinks.” 615.669.0704 KilljoyClub.com

In 2024, insurance-related technologies are expected to become even more sophisticated, offering further personalized, accurate insurance products. Using AI, chatbots and interactive tools, these approaches are predicted to continue improving customers' experiences, making insurance more accessible and understandable. Two local insurance companies are ready to assist everyone in the new year, online and in person. Their teams verify merely reacting to life's risks may not be enough; preparation is an essential benefit.
SARA ANGLIN STATE FARM AGENCY
From taking good care of State Farm customers since 2018, Nashville insurance agent Sara Anglin says she's honed innovative ways to help customers with readiness and preparation of financial-related safety nets. While Sara routinely takes care of customers' vehicles and homes, she says she also collaborates with customers to identify needs and design plans to protect them against property, liability and income losses through insurance products for business, renters, flood, life and health, as well. "We pride ourselves in having meaningful conversations with our customers to address any gaps in coverage. Most of our customers who come from prior carriers are unaware of our bundling discounts and extensive list of products available," she explains. "Our goals are to protect their current assets along with future income, while often planning for end-oflife expenses, too." Notably, Sara's team at 15582 Old Hickory Blvd., was recognized for achieving the State Farm Honor Club for the last three consecutive years. Honor Club is awarded to offices who continuously represent State Farm across all lines of business. They've also received the State Farm Ambassador award three years in a row, which is based upon assisting customers with their life, health and financial services. In addition to Tennessee residents, Sara can assist
customers in North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Mississippi; she may be adding Kentucky during 2024. As a New Orleans native and College of Charleston graduate, she understands the territory's nuances. For those relocating, Sara and her team thoroughly analyze vital factors, such as whether belongings during moves are covered and what to do if they turn up missing; timelines for switching drivers' licenses and registrations; reviews of current coverage compared to newly purchased homes; and completing all details for lenders during house closing periods. Sara also enjoys being part of the community's fabric by assisting local groups. Twice a year, she sponsors one or two participants for the Andrew Jackson FOP Youth Camp. "We've partnered with Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to bring joy to children and their families there during Christmas. This year, we're donating to Ronald McDonald House needs." Regarding a new State Farm service for the new year, Sara says they recently rolled out a life policy product with no underwriting for people aged 45 to 80 years. "Coverage is guaranteed, regardless of pre-existing conditions," she assures. 615.831.1800 SaraAnglin.com

In addition to their Brentwood office at 1728 General George Patton Dr., they have Tennessee offices in Dyersburg, Newbern, Trenton, in addition to Ripley and Halls (doing business as SN Anthony Insurance). They also have an office in Murray, Kentucky. Throughout the agency's professional advisers, the staff is licensed and does business in 25 states. Parks says Tigrett & Pennington represents 50-plus national and regional insurance companies, and is a Trusted Choice member of the Independent Insurance Agents of America. In addition to daily advice, Parks says the team offers the following five reminders for wintertime insurance checklists:
WINTERIZE HOME PIPES
Shut off water valves to outside spigots. Open exterior spigot valves; drain water out of the line.
CHECK TREE LIMBS
Be sure there are no overhanging limbs over homes or places where vehicles are parked to protect against damage from frozen, fallen tree parts.
INSURE HOME RENOVATIONS
Depending on type of summer/autumn improvements made, home additions may not be covered under an existing policy; check with an agent.
DOUBLE-CHECK AUTOMOBILE POLICY
Vehicular accidents are more likely to occur in winter, so check that coverage is ready to handle claims for liability and collision. Also, check boat or RV insurance policies to ensure they're secured from theft and fire.
ACCOUNT FOR INCREASE IN PERSONAL PROPERTY
If recent trips included purchases such as exotic artwork, antiques or jewelry, use the winter season to check personal property policies to ensure they provide enough coverage to protect these new, one-of-akind items. Parks says, "We’re here to ensure you’re properly covered all year-round." 731.285.4455 TPIns.com

PR IOR ITI ZI NG VA SCU L A R H E A LTH Middle TN Vascular Associates Helps To Treat Vascular Concerns For All Ages ARTICLE BY LAUREN KELLY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Varicose veins and spider veins are a very common, albeit unwelcome part of aging. It is estimated that by age sixty, 40 percent of men and 70 percent of women will develop these unsightly, and often uncomfortable veins. As explained by Derek De Grijs, M.D., these veins, most commonly affecting the legs, become more prominent over time as increased pressure from prolonged standing or sitting can cause the delicate valves within the leg veins to function less effectively. This leads to leg swelling, heaviness, fatigue, and the unwanted appearance of varicose or spider veins. Additionally, Dr. De Grijs says women are affected more commonly than men due to a combination of genetic predisposition, prolonged exposure to estrogen, and changes
50

to the body during pregnancy. Because of this, these unwanted veins are often considered an inconvenience of aging women. However, they do frequently occur in men, and in severe cases, in both men and women beginning in the late teens and early twenties. Overall, addressing these vein problems tends to get put off because it is not seen as an immediate medical concern. Patients see their parents and grandparents struggling with progressively worsening painful and unsightly veins, but often aren’t aware that quick and effective treatments are readily available and, in most cases, covered by insurance. While it is true that varicose and spider veins do not usually indicate a severe medical problem, Dr. De Grijs says,
"The longer patients wait to seek treatment, the worse the varicose or spider veins tend to get. The sooner that we can initiate treatment, the better the long-term results will be.” The experts at Middle Tennessee Vascular Associates seek to aid patients of all ages by resolving painful or unsightly varicose or spider veins in their specialized vein clinic located in Williamson Medical Center. The practice, which is led by three board certified vascular surgeons, also has three vascular health centers located in Franklin, Columbia and Shelbyville. At these locations, patients are treated for a variety of vascular conditions in addition to vein problems (among them, aneurysms, arterial blockages and dialysis access). Middle Tennessee Vascular Associates has two physician assistants and three vascular surgeons, including Dr. Derek De Grijs, M.D., RPVI, a Nashville native with more than 10 years of vascular health experience. “There are two major wings to the practice. The first is a general vascular surgery practice where we treat a wide array of diseases that affect or involve the vascular system, which often require major surgery. The second is Middle Tennessee Vein Clinic where we treat the majority of vein-related problems which includes varicose veins and spider veins," says Dr. De Grijs. Middle Tennessee Vascular sees a wide range of patients, but varicose veins are more common among specific groups. “There is a much higher frequency of varicose veins and spider veins in women due to genetics and prolonged exposure to estrogen,” De Grijs explains. “Our vascular surgery practice sees an older population. However, at our vein clinic we see significantly younger patients, with it not being uncommon to see women in their mid-twenties or early thirties, who have already been suffering from varicose veins for many years!”
The clinic offers solutions for each case, no matter how big or small. The simplest form of treatment is to begin wearing well-fitting compression stockings (20-30mm Hg) while standing or sitting. “One of the most common procedures is sclerotherapy, which is a tried-and-true treatment for resolution of spider veins,” states De Grijs. “In brief, it is an injection with an extremely small needle, directed into the webs of spider veins, which immediately improves the appearance of these veins in very little time (15-20 minutes).” If these varicose veins or spider veins are severe, or continuously recur, generally there are a couple larger veins feeding them that are having venous reflux- when the blood is flowing the wrong direction due to failure of the delicate valves within the veins. When this is the case, in addition to compression stockings, often a procedure called a radio frequency ablation is done to close the malfunctioning vein down. This redirects blood flow into the healthier veins. “At Middle Tennessee Vascular Associates, we also have our very own vascular lab where we do a multitude of imaging studies, including ultrasounds of blood vessels throughout the body- which is a separate entity that we have offered to the community for many years," De Grijs says. He adds, “Most of our employees have been with the practice for many years. A lot of our patients continue coming to our practice for ongoing surveillance of things that we had performed interventions on in the past, and they continue to entrust us to ensure that everything remains in good working order. This is not only a testament to the skill and acumen of the practitioners but also to a staff that makes our patients feel comfortable and confident." MidTNVascular.com CONTINUED >

"We're going to give our clients a luxurious experience, but we're also going to connect with you along the way.” When advanced nurse practitioner, Courtney Allen, of Brentwood, founded her own cosmetic dermatology clinic, she says she had a very specific idea about how she wanted it to look and feel. With the full support of her husband who helped build the space out, she was ready to bring her vision to life. The first thing she did was hire an upscale interior designer, Sam Cram, to create a luxurious and serene space that is light, airy and clean. The second thing she did was staff it with warm and competent nurse practitioners to ensure all patients feel welcomed, well-educated and encouraged. “At Canvas Skin, the people here play a huge role in making it feel inclusive,” she says. “We always have your best interest at heart, giving you a safe space to look and feel your best. We're going to give our clients a luxurious experience, but we're also going to connect with you along the way.” Connecting with people is the most important value to Courtney. When she or one of her other nurse practitioners first meet clients, they’re going to make them
feel seen. “You are uniquely you, and no one else is you, and that is truly special,” she says. “By talking and getting to know our clients personally, we meet them where they are in life, and make them feel good inside first.” Hence what Canvas’s brand is based upon: “Where beauty starts from the inside out.” She adds, “What truly keeps people coming back to us is that we help them feel better on the inside, and build strong confidence by enhancing their features on the outside. They're not just walking in for a quick treatment. Canvas is a lot deeper than that.” Once a client feels comfortable, the assessment begins. “We do a full facial analysis, where we assess your head, neck and skin, detailing every area where you could use neurotoxin and/or filler,” says Courtney. “Our medical-grade skin care line is also a form of treatment. We provide clients with a comprehensive treatment plan that does not have to be fulfilled that day, but is documented so they are well CONTINUED >

“By talking and getting to know our clients personally, we meet them where they are in life, and make them feel good inside first.” taken care of during their entire experience at Canvas Skin.” Canvas Skin offers a myriad of services, so there’s something for every aesthetic need. In addition to neurotoxins such as Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and various fillers, they also offer chemical peels, laser treatments and microneedling facials. “Our most popular treatment is injecting a neurotoxin,” she says. “It's probably the most cost effective and you get the most extravagant long-term results. We have muscles all over our face and when our muscles contract our skin overlaps and we get fine lines and wrinkles. By injecting those muscles, they relax, and then the skin doesn't overlap and we don't have those lines. This results in a more youthful appearance.” The number two most requested treatment is fillers. “As we age and have more birthdays, we lose volume in our face,” says Courtney. “It's a natural and normal process to lose collagen and fat in the face as we are privileged to age. To restore that volume loss, we inject filler, which restores

volume. There are tons of different types of fillers, and we choose one based on the person's medical history and the area on the face we're treating.” In addition to these and other treatments, Courtney recommends clients follow a good skin care regimen to get the best results. “You're going to want to be on a retinol because it produces collagen,” she says. “It's the number one anti-aging product.” Canvas Skin’s own skin care line makes it seamless for clients to find what they need. She says, “Our two top products are the Canvas Skin Revival Retinol Serum and our Ela Radiance Brightening Pads, which contain kojic acid and arbutin. These pads decrease pigment on the face and brighten it overall. It's our glow pad.” The ultimate goal for clients, she states, is to appear refreshed and youthful, and most of all to feel their best. “That’s my ultimate goal,” says Courtney. “To make people feel beautiful on the inside and out.” Canvas-Skin.co

W ELCOME STR ENGTH, WELLNESS Teams at Tennessee Ketamine & Wellness And Weight Loss Centers of Nashville Ready To Assist
TENNESSEE KETAMINE & WELLNESS CENTER
Ketamine is an anesthetic drug that’s been safely administered by anesthesiologists since 1970. Over the past 20 years, physicians learned ketamine also can be used to successfully treat major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), substance dependence and chronic pain. An associated Nashville area medical facility, Tennessee Ketamine & Wellness Center, provides relief to local residents, as well as those throughout the United States. “We give hope to patients who haven’t responded to other treatments for these
conditions,” explains Randall Malchow, M.D., a board-certified anesthesiologist and the center’s medical director. The staff’s newest protocol, Ketamine for Alcohol Dependance (KAD) to treat alcohol dependence or curb unhealthy alcohol amounts, was added last July. According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration statistics, alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in Tennessee, with nearly one million adults suspected of having an alcohol use disorder or alcohol addiction. This KAD treatment is among the first of its kind in America, announces Dr. Malchow. Ketamine can work in three different ways

to effectively treat pain and depression, he confirms. “It increases the amount of glutamate in the nervous system, which increases neuro connections so the brain and spinal cord process pain in a healthier way, which also decreases depression. It resets pain receptors. With chronic pain, these receptors are turned on all the time. Ketamine quiets them down. It decreases the inflammation in the nervous system that contributes to pain and depression,” he states. Dr. Malchow is an acknowledged U.S. expert on ketamine administration. He served as an anesthesiologist for 25 years in the armed forces before retiring as a colonel and becoming an associate professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was the first Vanderbilt physician to offer extended ketamine infusion therapy. In 2015, he established one of the few ketamine infusion centers in the Veterans Health Administration and the only center targeting opioid reduction. He’s also published more than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles, and serves regularly on worldwide medical missions supporting those in need. The center’s Franklin-based team assists patients through various methods: intravenous (IV) infusions, nasal sprays administered on-site, NAD infusions and other supplements to support overall well-being. Practice manager Carrie Stout-Holder says prospective patients first schedule an appointment for a comprehensive evaluation, and are provided with specific assessment forms that can be completed swiftly on smartphones, tablets or computers. He says, “These medications represent a significant advancement in weight management, offering not just effective weight reduction but also improved metabolic health.”
WEIGHT LOSS CENTERS OF NASHVILLE
In addition to losing weight, Dan Schneider, D.C., and Ethan Kellum, M.D., co-founders of Weight Loss Centers Of Nashville, say the center’s clients report improved energy, digestion, mental clarity and sleep, along with a newfound boost of self-confidence and decrease in joint pains. Working via proprietary nutraceuticals over specified periods of time, Dr. Kellum says their supplements help clients with fast weight loss by curbing hunger cravings and increasing fat metabolism. "Our supplements are a blend of amino acids, a B-vitamin and herbs, free from hormones and stimulants. They're safe, natural and devoid of significant side effects or medication interactions," he explains. CONTINUED >

Dr. Schneider reminds that healthy, sustainable weight loss is not always just about a calories in versus calories out equation. "Effective weight loss involves reducing inflammation and improving cellular sensitivity to the body's natural hormones that are essential for regulating metabolism." The program's emphasis on real foods, portion control and a balanced diet is a key focus. Dr. Kellum highlights, "We advocate for a diet consisting of fresh, satisfying ingredients from regular grocery stores, focusing on lean proteins, vegetables and fruits." The center’s team also builds plans for both vegans and vegetarians. Dr. Schneider says they apply a unique approach to metabolic reset. "Our program is designed to reset the metabolism, rather than merely speeding it up, distinguishing us from many other weight loss programs." Having a weight management coach and a healthy support system is vital to making permanent and sustainable changes, adds Dr. Kellum. “Our commitment to providing continuous, comprehensive support through our app ensures a supportive and effective weight loss journey for our clients." Those interested may schedule a complimentary phone consultation with one of the center’s weight loss care coordinators at 125 Cool Springs Blvd., Ste. #240, in Franklin. The rest of the program is designed to be accomplished from the comfort of clients’ homes. Dr. Kellum shares the center's success rate: "Clients typically lose about 10-20% of their total body weight in just 60 days, a much quicker rate compared to other programs. We're not just reducing weight; we're enhancing overall health." 629.877.4100 WeightLossCentersOfNashville.com

Food For Thought NASHVILLE BORN HEALTH FOOD CAFE AND LOCAL JUICE BAR INSPIRES WELLNESS FROM WITHIN
Being healthy can look like an array of things. One way of being healthy that is oftentimes overlooked is having a healthy relationship with food. Robbie Nowinski, the founder of E+ROSE, has taken some time to discuss what a healthy relationship with food looks like. E+ROSE’s motto is “Eat Well, Be Kind," which strives to inspire wellness by cultivating a lifestyle for longevity.
HOW DID YOU CREATE E+ROSE, AND HOW DID BEING A DIETITIAN CONSULTANT IMPACT THAT? "As a dietitian consultant, I was in and out of hospitals nearly every day. I lived and worked in both Los Angeles and New York, and saw firsthand how sick people had become. I knew I needed to be a part of a solution for people to not get sick in the first place, and to build a community around food as medicine. Living and working in Manhattan, I would frequently spend my Sundays reading in various cafes throughout the city. Two authors in particular were really inspiring: John Mackey and his idea of 'Conscious Capitalism,' and Howard Schultz and his ability to create a brand synonymous with a global commodity. If you combine the two, Whole Foods and Starbucks, what do you get? This was the original premise for E+ROSE. Something uncommon, something relatable, and something highly impactful." WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN NUTRITION? “I played hockey my entire life and discovered over the years how different my performance would be when paying attention to what I ate. In college, I was intending to go to medical school, however I discovered dietetics, and really took great interest in diving deeper into the world of nutrition. The more I learned, the more I wanted to do more directly in the field. I found it fascinating how changes in what you eat has an impact on everything.”

EAT R IGH T | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
WHAT DOES A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD LOOK LIKE? "There is a saying in medicine that 'the dose makes the poison.' A healthy relationship with food is understanding the importance of moderation. Your overall health is not going to change with one meal, for the better or the worse. If you eat cookies every day, over time you are going to likely be very unhealthy and sick, but if you indulge periodically and eat well most of the time, then you are probably going to be just fine." WHAT ARE SOME STEPS PEOPLE CAN TAKE TOWARD ACHIEVING A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD? "Be more forgiving and kind to yourself and know that health and wellness is a journey and a lifestyle, not a daily destination. If you typically have dessert every day, start with having an apple or some other fruit for dessert for a specific set amount of time, perhaps a week to start. If you fail the first go-around, try again. Worst case, maybe you at least had a couple of days of better eating. Once you hit your goal, expand it further. You will never achieve beyond what you thought you could if you condemn tomorrow to be like yesterday. You have to keep moving and changing and striving to improve, and small steps ultimately lead to big change." WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT E+ROSE? "One of our mottos at E+ROSE is 'Eat Well, Be Kind.' I love our culture of caring for our community through providing nourishing food options in a welcoming atmosphere. Our mission is to inspire wellness by cultivating a lifestyle for longevity and it is that community around healthy food that I love most." WHAT’S NEXT FOR E+ROSE? “We are looking to expand with our first location outside of Tennessee next year. Our goal is 100 locations in the next five years and ultimately to be the premier wellness-focused brand in the world. Yes, these are some huge, lofty goals, but we operate with the premise that if conventional thinking makes our mission impossible, then unconventional thinking is necessary.”
ANYTHING ELSE? “Globally, we spend more years in poor health than at any point in history, and an unhealthy diet is the leading risk factor for illness. We believe in food as medicine, and higher nourishment leading to an improved quality of life. Our mission at E+ROSE is to inspire wellness by cultivating a lifestyle for longevity. We intend to help be a part of the solution; to defy mortality. Our premium experience, highest quality, healthy offerings deliver increased well being from within. From start to finish, in all we do, our atmosphere, attitude, service and product improve the health and lives of our communities in which we operate.” 615.678.8364 EandRose.com

Recreational Sports Brings Sense of Community And Friendly Competition
ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Teamwork makes the dream work, and in 2024, participating in recreational sports may be the key to achieving fitness goals. Not only that, but it’s a great way to build community among players. With sports such as pickleball currently being the No. 1 pastime, now’s a better time than ever to join in on the fun. “As an adult, we were all kids, and most of us playing some sort of sport. We get older, and our lives are focused on our kids, or careers, or families and we sort of get lost in that world,”

says Alisha Russell, pickleball lead pro and coordinator at Life Time Franklin. “And maybe even forget that we loved playing…something. So, no matter what it is, joining a sports league allows us to continue that level of competitive sportsmanship and gamesmanship that we learned so much from growing up.” What most people don’t know, is just how easy it is to get involved with recreational sports and oftentimes assume the process will be hard and tedious. However, it’s just the opposite! Life Time offers a free intro clinic to pickleball to those wanting to try out rec sports and see if pickleball would be a good fit for them. Other recreational sports typically have difficulty levels and most rec centers will offer classes to help fine-tune any skills. “I’ve made lifelong friendships and relationships through the sport of pickleball,” Alisha says. “I’ll forever be grateful for the positive things I’ve learned and the people that have been brought into my life. I hear this same sentiment over and over from so many people.” 2024 is the perfect time to seize the opportunity to try out a rec sports team. Who knows? You may end up meeting your new best friend on the court!
“I’ve made lifelong friendships and relationships through the sport of pickleball,” Alisha says.

Nicole Carver based in Tampa, Florida, started her own concierge business in 2012. It was just herself to begin with, but now the company has grown to include 10 employees in three locations, Tampa and Sarasota, Florida, and Nashville. Being a military spouse, she and her family stationed to Tampa, Florida, from Germany, where they had been for almost five years. Tampa became home and while living there, Nicole decided to jump-start her career again and begin her own business. Nicole has a knack for helping others organize their lives especially after being a busy mom of a busy home. When deciding she wanted to return to work Nicole did some soul searching. She says she asked herself what her talents were and where she excelled. "I realized after running a home and simultaneously being an executive assistant working with C level executives, I could put those organizational qualities to work. I could help others organize their busy lives, too." Nicole is using her talents and rounding up business suited for the busy needs of her clients. Nicole obtained her business license, built a company website, and started networking. She says she continues to educate herself about business to ensure her company is constantly improving and meeting the needs of their clients. Carver Concierge is a company that assists its clients in tasks they may not have time for, especially during the holidays. Nicole says they take care of everything on a client’s personal to-do lists. They can schedule doctor’s appointments, send Amazon returns, assist with relocation plans, keep the home running smoothly and oversee projects. "Other requests include having the car serviced and detailed or home maintenance requests," she adds.
“By entrusting us with the details, our clients can find peace of mind and a sense of relief, allowing them to truly unwind and de-stress during the holidays,” says Nicole. The praises she has received from her clients are funny and sweet. They have said: “Where have you been all my life, I can’t live without you, and you are a wife for a wife.” Nicole’s team of employees are professional and skilled at balancing the lives of their clients, giving them more time to do the things they love and less time fretting over what they have to get done. She says they also can get clients ready for the upcoming year, lifting the weight off clients' backs and delivering vibrant, high-touch solutions. The company's team offers tailored personal assistance, executive support and luxury lifestyle management services through professionals who Nicole says are reliable, confidential and caring. "We take great care to build relationships with our personal and corporate clients. Each client is served in a personable and friendly way." “Whether it’s managing holiday shopping, coordinating travel plans, or handling event logistics, we’ve got it covered. Our goal is to make their lives easier, so they can focus on enjoying the festivities and spending quality time with their loved ones, free from the burdens of time-consuming tasks,” says Nicole, who offers virtual or heels on the ground support. What a gift of time to spend elsewhere rather than being bogged down with to do’s. 813.546.4070 CarverConcierge.com

COLLECT TIMELESS, CLASSY TENNIS APPAREL
Lacey Keally and Lauren Hocker
Little did Lauren Hocker and Lacey Keally know that their pandemic pastime would one day result in them entering the world of tennis apparel. 40-Love Tennis is the newest and hottest tennis apparel brand to hit Brentwood and makes anyone who wears it feels like a true tennis professional, regardless of skill level. Lauren and Lacey met 15 years ago whilst working in publications and quickly became friends. The pandemic granted the two with an abundance of free time, causing them to invest in a new hobby: tennis. “We quickly fell in love with the game. We enjoyed being outdoors and meeting new people from all different clubs,” Lacey says. As their tennis skills grew, they began to look for better apparel in which to invest. “We were looking for clothes as we were getting better. We realized we needed to invest in tennis clothing, and we noticed CONTINUED >

40-Love Match Point Dress
there weren’t a lot of options out there,” Lauren explains. “The tennis apparel seemed basic, not a lot of fashion.” “After the pandemic, we seized the opportunity to launch our own tennis line, leveraging our marketing and business backgrounds. With the right designer and manufacturers on board, we were ready to bring our vision to life,” Lauren explains. Thus, 40-Love was born. The first 40-Love collection launched in October 2023 and is considered a true collection, meaning that all of the pieces in the collection perfectly complement one another. Each piece is timeless and classy, and with its color palette being black, white, and navy, it’s easy to create several different outfits from this collection. “It’s a throwback to the Farrah Fawcett days of tennis to where we want it to be classic, but also modern,” Lacey explains. These days, when Lauren and Lacey head to the courts, they often find their opponents sporting 40-Love. “I actually went to a match two days ago and was wearing the same thing as my opponent, and it was our 40-Love, and that’s exciting now to see people wearing our products!” Lacey says. Besides working on their spring collection, which is expected to launch in early March, Lauren and Lacey are also event co-chairs for Friends & Fashion, which raises funds for Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Friends & Fashion will take place on April 2. The 40-Love team also offers pop-up shops to serve customers in style. @40lovetenniswear 40-LoveTennis.com
