New Officer Joins Brentwood Police Department

Michael Connors spent the last five years as a police officer in Bristol, Rhode Island, but when his wife, Kayla, took a new job in Nashville, he began looking at local police departments. His search led him to Brentwood. He recently was sworn in as the city’s newest police officer. He was born in California but grew up in Massachusetts. He attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst and got his degree in political science.

Leadership Brentwood Class of 2023 Improves City With Community Projects

For 33 years, the Williamson County Chamber Foundation has hosted Leadership Brentwood, bringing in 20 community leaders for a nine-month program that culminates in three community-service projects. Leadership Brentwood Class of 2023 members celebrated their graduation, and recently followed up about how the program continues to enhance the community. Their three projects were: a new petfriendly drinking fountain at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library; Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home Basketball Goal; and baseball score tables.

May Massie: Brentwood Firefighter Determined To Be A ‘Friendly Face’

As one of the newest Brentwood Fire & Rescue Department members, May Massie tries to bring healing to every disaster or emergency she encounters. “My family was in a real nasty accident, and they didn’t make it,” she shares. “After that happened, I decided this is what I want to do (firefighter) because I didn’t want anybody to go through what I did.” A few months later, she became an Emergency Medical Technician.

Brentwood City Commission Approves New Budget, Keeps Tax Rate Low

Brentwood commissioners unanimously established the city’s new property tax rate for the 2024 fiscal year. “This maintains the tax rate at 29 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, which is the same effective property tax rate for the 33rd year in a row,” says Kirk Bednar, Brentwood city manager. This continued rate, one of the lowest in the state, took effect on July 1. Brentwood Mayor Mark Gorman says it's exciting to hold the rate.

A new Pollinator Garden was unveiled on the Reading Terrace at John P. Holt Brentwood Library. The fresh garden was designed to attract bees, butterflies, moths, beetles and birds.

Winners, Winners, Science Dinners

After winning first place at the Tennessee Science Olympiad, Ravenwood High students this summer traveled to Wichita, Kansas, to compete in the National Science Olympiad. The students were joined by 119 other teams from all around the country and one Global Ambassador Team from Japan. They competed against their peers in 23 different Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) challenges. Ravenwood High students were among the best in several categories.

Children (And Adults) Can Go For Fun, Exciting And Educational Way To Learn To Bake

Chef Alyssa Gangeri has been baking since she was a little girl in her grandmother's kitchen, all designed to feed her self-proclaimed, large Italian family. Because she says she wanted every child to be able to have a best-ever baking experience, she authored a series of children's storybook cookbooks to teach kids how to measure, mix and bake their way through the kitchen, while also giving safety tips.

"As a child, I loved baking and everything that came with it. As an adult and food lover, I realized there was something missing when I went to bookstores: an interactive children's cookbook," recalls Alyssa, saying she vowed to create especially engaging, fun-filled cookbooks for those just learning her beloved craft.

Pastry Chef Alyssa Gangeri, operating partner, The Butter Milk Ranch: “While writing these book I truly realized how much STEM learning is with baking," she says.

Since graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Alyssa worked for elite companies such as the Ritz Carlton, Tom Colicchio, Norman Van Aken and Gray Kunz. In 2018, she joined forces with management group Urban Grub, who moved her to Nashville to open and operate The Butter Milk Ranch as a partner and to oversee all pastry development for their namesake sister restaurant, Urban Grub in 12South.

Through Alyssa's journey of baking, she developed the Mimi character, her very own miniature version of herself, for Mimi came from a nickname her family gave her as a toddler. "Children these days have just as much interest in the kitchen as their parents do, but the ordinary cookbook just doesn't cut it," she adds.

In 2015, she created Mimi's Adventures in Baking to give children and adults a way to get into the kitchen and allow the child to become the chef and the adult the assistant. Each book has one recipe and an interactive storyline the child can read, and at the end, go into the kitchen and do what Mimi did. And for "non-baking" parents, she vows these elite

pastry chef recipes are tested and ready for even the most inexperienced bakers.

"My main focus was to bring back those child crucial moments where you got to have one-on-one time with someone important to you, and family recipes got passed down," she adds.

Love at First Sight! is a puppy and kitten adoption center located right in the heart of Music City. Founded in 1995 by two Nashville veterinarians who were tired of seeing so many stray and abandoned pets in the middle Tennessee area and chose to act on this issue. Love at First Sight! opened with the intention to spread awareness of this issue regarding pet overpopulation and both doctors used their platform to educate pet owners of the importance of spaying and neutering. All adoptable puppies and kittens are carefully examined across the street at VCA Murphy Road Animal Hospital prior to being accepted for adoption.  Once they are accepted, they are vaccinated with all the necessary vaccines, treated for internal/ external parasites, bathed with medicated shampoos, fed, and loved until their forever owner arrives! It's time for sports physicals for children and teens, and for developing plans regarding how to keep youths as healthy as possible as they transition into new school year routines.

Complete pediatric health services 'with intentional compassion and extra love' are available with Dr. Jill Kelly and her Brentwood Pediatric Care medical team at 343 Franklin Road, Suite 106.

She completed her medical school training in The Honors Program in Medical Education at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She then completed her Residency at Baylor College of Medicine’s Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.

"We're happy to offer free meet and greets to help new patients learn more about what we do," Dr. Jill says.

This medical team, located in the Brentwood Medical Center building, follows the American Academy of Pediatrics and Bright Futures recommended health guidelines for well child care as they conduct developmental screenings and plot the progress of each patient.

Additionally, the staff specializes in the treatment of asthma through an asthma-focused program, of which Dr. Jill has personal experience. She says because asthma is the most common chronic childhood illness, many patients deal with cough and labored breathing on a regular basis. To treat pediatric diabetes, she is happy to collaborate with pediatric endocrinologists and dietitians or nutritionists for case-by-case, comprehensive approaches.

Soles4Souls, one of the top-rated nonprofits in the country, has made a huge impact in the lives of so many. Since 2006, the nonprofit has been collecting new and used shoes and clothing to help people both locally and around the world.

Today, with its 4EveryKid program, began in 2020, school children experiencing homelessness no longer have to feel like they don’t belong, or be subject to bullying because of what they’re wearing on their feet.

“About four years ago, we were introduced to Catherine Knowles, who heads up the HERO (Homeless Education Resource Office) program in the Metro Nashville Public Schools system,” says Rod Arnold, chief marketing officer for Soles4Souls. “The program is responsible for assisting all the kids in the area experiencing homelessness.”

Catherine shared a story about a girl named Lyla who was in and out of different homes and showed up to school one day with the only shoes she owned, which was one pink flip flop and one pink cowboy boot. While the HERO program bought her a pair of shoes, they didn’t have the budget for shoes, and there was such a huge need.

“At that time, there were about 3,000 kids experiencing homelessness in Nashville; now, it's about 4,000 kids,” he says.

It was then that Soles4Souls made a commitment to provide a new pair of shoes to these children every year. Rod says, “We started the 4EveryKid program in Nashville and we're expanding it. In Middle Tennessee, there are about 10,000 kids experiencing homelessness in our schools and nationally it’s about 1.5 million. We’re working our way to getting all these kids new shoes every year.

“Whether it's a 10-year-old or a 15-year-old who goes to school with shoes that don't fit or that are torn up or are old and have holes in them, it's hard to feel like you belong, and those things matter a lot. Plus, when shoes are too tight, that discomfort can make it hard for children to concentrate and learn. Conversely, shoes that are too large can be a trip and fall hazard."

He adds, “When you give kids a new pair of shoes, there’s this big shift in how they feel about themselves and their level of confidence. So far, we’ve distributed about 70,000 pairs of shoes through this program. We collect a lot of data from the schools, and we see that these kids are now more likely to attend school, plus we're starting to see that their grades are going up, and they are more likely to participate in gym class and extracurricular activities such as sports. So, it has had a tremendous effect on them.”

Thanks to partnerships with Footlocker, Reebok, Under Armor, Shaquille O’Neal’s branded sneakers and others, Soles4Souls has been able to purchase shoes at wholesale costs.

The nonprofit is busy raising money to buy these shoes. It costs about $20 to provide each kid with a pair of shoes. While Soles4Souls collects used shoes for some of their other programs, he says, “We feel like these kids deserve the dignity of a new pair of shoes.”

There are big plans for back-to-school. “Our goal is to give new shoes to 100,000 kids this upcoming school year,” says Rod.

HELP YOUTHS IN FOSTER CARE SYSTEM HAVE PERSONAL, NEW WAY TO STORE THEIR BELONGINGS

“An aware parent loves all children he or she interacts with— for you are a caretaker for those moments in time," says Doc Childre, originator of the HeartMath System for enhancing health and well-being.

When securing back-to-school gear for carrying extra items, it's a great time to consider providing youths in foster care with their own bag. These are local youths who may have no one to shop for them to prepare for the new school year.

Cara Finger’s experience with being adopted herself, and with having adopted two of her own three children, led her to launch the nonprofit My Bag My Story in 2019, an organization that gifts a backpack or duffel bag to children in foster care each time the group sells one of those products.

“When my husband and I became foster parents, I saw children carrying all they possessed in plastic sacks.

It steals a child's self-respect when you give them a trash bag for the only things they have in life. Sometimes the only thing kids have control over is their stuff,” recalls Cara.

“Children in foster care often have many issues working against them, due to no fault of their own. Something so small as having their own decent bag can go a long way,” she says.

She adds that she was disappointed by the scarce secondhand luggage donations and limited resources available to foster families, so she collaborated with designers and manufacturers to create products anyone would be proud to carry.

Since beginning the initiative and teaming up with 21 different agencies in the region and statewide, this Brentwood resident has distributed more than 2,000 bags to Tennessee children in the foster care program.

"Foster children, on average, change homes two to three times a year, which can be an extremely traumatic and disruptive experience. Our project is about promoting selfworth, dignity and a little comfort along the way. Most people don’t realize that children in foster care often travel with nothing more than a trash bag to hold their belongings. We’re here to change that, one bag, and one person at a time," Cara says.

My Bag My Story offers its bags online and through pop-up or special events, with backpacks $59 each; duffels $79 each and accessory pouches $19 each. Cara indicates when a person buys a backpack or duffel, a second one is given to children entering foster care or moving from one foster care family to another. People can buy bags to donate directly as well.

She often explains that the bags are tangible vehicles for discussing foster care realities, because it is not something people talk about a lot.

My Bag My Story products come in a colorful range of popular hues, including yellow, orange, pink, black gray, purple, camo and navy.

While Cara handles the majority of organizing the group’s efforts, Belmont University students in the school’s Enactus organization

help manage inventory and fulfill requests for donated bags, she says. This is an international nonprofit campus organization designed to exercise entrepreneurial skills for charitable causes. Previous Belmont University Enactus students also helped her with filing initial paperwork to become a nonprofit, establishing logistics for retail sales and developing public awareness.

"There are more than 9,000 children in the foster care system across Tennessee. We partner with local churches, businesses and organizations to try to get our bags into their hands. With the help of our community, partners and generous donors, we hope to donate a thousand bags in this year alone," Cara says.

She says they recently were enthused about partnering with Williamson County and Wilson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and to drop off a round of bag donations.

ELEGANT AND FUN CHILDREN’S TEA PARTY

Two years ago, Meagan Benson was at a crossroads with her career. She wanted to make a change, but wasn’t sure what to do. Her British-born husband, Graham, mentioned how she always made everything so pretty and lovely. “It was literally like a light bulb went off and in that moment, Pretty Lovely Teas was born,” she says.

She combined that great Southern hospitality with which she was raised with the lovely tradition of British afternoon tea and brought it to Nashville. While many of the teas she prepares are for adults, it was important for her to offer the same experience to children. Unlike the tea parties of the past, this is a much fancier affair.

“A lot of adults are shocked when I put out actual china on the table,” she says. “The tablescape needs to be colorful and eye-catching, but I don't want it to be just this cutesy thing. They deserve to have a luxe experience as well. Plus, I want children to feel like ‘I'm a big kid.’ That was important to me when I was a child.”

At every tea, two different types of tea are offered. “For children, I have one black that's typically a breakfast tea, and this is traditionally taken with milk and sugar, and sometimes honey. Then, we have a botanical sort of lighter tea that is more floral and fruitier, and that is usually served with a slice of lemon.”

Meagan says it's fun for the children to add the milk and sugar themselves. “The whole concept and experience is sort of sensory. They get to touch the sugar cubes and pour their own milk. It allows them to feel independent and that they have these nice things to enjoy. It's all about that aesthetic, and they want fancy, too.”

For kids who are not tea fans, a sparkling apple cider from a fancy bottle is also offered. At Christmastime, hot chocolate with marshmallows is served, too.

Food items are presented on a three-tiered platter and there are sandwiches and sweets dedicated strictly for children. For kids without nut allergies, the Elvis sandwich, made with banana and peanut butter, is a big hit. The Ladybug, which is a Nutella and strawberry sandwich, is another delicious option. And of course, classics, such as a turkey sandwich, also are offered. Scones may include the popular chocolate chip and/or the blueberry lemon.

“Typically, when you have an afternoon tea, you start with the sandwiches and work your way up the tiers, with the sweet treats being last. But, the kids are allowed to explore and experience it in any order they want.”

Although Pretty Lovely Teas doesn’t focus on etiquette, Meagan says it’s a natural part of the whole experience. “They gain some simple manners, such as ‘Would you please pass this’ and learning how to share. I don’t treat them any differently than adults when serving them.”

Along with eating and drinking, children also have fun activities, such as coloring and making crowns. “We also allow them to be creative with cookie decorating and fun table games,” she says.

Whether people hire her to do birthday parties, wedding and baby showers, or other events they are hosting, Meagan doesn’t want the atmosphere to be pretentious. “I want it to be approachable and fun, but still elegant.”

She provides everything necessary to make experiences possible at homes or event venues. The minimum party is for 10, and they also can handle large parties with a variety of serving options.

“It's not just about the food, and it's not just about the tablescape; it's about being around each other,” says Meagan.

HOW TO PREPARE DOGS FOR NEW BABY IN THE FAMILY

While the business offers a full range of behavior therapies from life skills and manners to puppy development and senior dog behavior support, the trainers’ main goals are to ensure dogs and their families can live together in harmony and happiness.

One thing that can often dramatically change the family dynamic is bringing a (human) baby into the home, but with proper guidance and education, the child and dog can become best friends.

“Kathi O'Malley and I are certified behavior consultants who have additional certifications through Family Paws,” says Ayelet Berger, who co-owns Instinct Nashville with Julie Farris. [Family Paws

provides specialized programs for parents with dogs.] “ We do a lot of prep to prepare the dog for the baby, and one of my favorite things to do is teach parents how to properly introduce the dog to the baby.”

Also, because moms and dads literally will have their hands full caring for the infant, Ayelet and Kathi teach the dog how to respond to verbal commands so the parent doesn’t have to get up or point to, say, a dog bed or crate. Other times, when a toddler or a small child runs past the dog and/or makes a lot of noise, the dog may become startled or scared and act out.

“We do some behavior modification where we help the dog learn to acclimate to some of these new behaviors and noises. We never want to isolate a dog, so we do everything in our power to keep everybody safe.”

Family Paws states that children grow and dogs age. “If we're talking about a senior dog, we know there might be some aches and pains that are unpredictable that could make a dog jumpy,” she says. “We help children learn how to safely interact with their dogs, and we teach parents how to guide their children in different exercises. So again, they're integrated. We don't want the dog to just be kept away from the child.”

Ayelet became acquainted with Family Paws when her first child was still a baby. “I wanted to understand what I needed to know, so I had a colleague take me through the presentation and it was incredible. I knew I had to get certified!”

In the home of Lisa Underwood and her husband lives Dahlia, a spirited Coonhound mix with a personality as vibrant as her fur. At just 2 years old, Dahlia already has made an indelible mark on the lives of her human parents.

Though the veterinarian would jokingly say that Dahlia is a Heinz 57 variety, a delightful blend of different breeds; to Lisa and her husband, Dahlia is a symbol of love and connection.

Dahlia's journey to their home began after the passing of their son, Zachary. With heavy hearts, Lisa and her husband inherited Dahlia, unsure if they could keep up with her boundless energy. At the time, they had an elderly Labrador who preferred the serenity of a peaceful nap to Dahlia's playful antics. One night, as frustration

Eager to bring harmony back into their home, Lisa wasted no time contacting the dog trainer. She says the transformation in Dahlia's behavior was astonishing. From being an outside dog, Dahlia quickly became the star. She learned commands, manners and became a shining example of what love and guidance can accomplish.

As Dahlia thrived under Lisa's care, she became a daily reminder of the son they lost and the love that still binds them.

Her playful capers and unwavering loyalty breathed life into their healing hearts. Dahlia had transformed from a wild child to a guardian angel, a symbol of resilience and the enduring power of love.

Like a loyal shadow, Dahlia followed Lisa everywhere, her nose always searching for the scent of adventure. It was as if Dahlia wanted to be a part of everything Lisa did, a constant reminder of the bond they shared. Lisa admits that Dahlia's presence, though sometimes challenging, has brought comfort and a sense of purpose to Lisa and her husband during their grieving process.

With her lively spirit and loving nature, Dahlia reminds Lisa and her husband of their son. Zachary was known for his kind heart and the way he effortlessly connected with people. After his passing, his friends would frequently inquire about Dahlia, often suggesting playdates at the local dog park.

When asking Lisa about the quirkiest thing about Dahlia, she laughs, as she shares that when “Dahlia gets anything, she will instantly go and bury it in the backyard, only to dig them up days or even weeks later, when she is ready to play with them.”

This quirky habit makes them feel like Dahlia has a secret world all her own, she adds.

Now, the Underwoods consider Dahlia to be more than just another dog; she is a beacon of hope and a testament to the beautiful connections that exist between humans and their fourlegged companions. "In her, we found solace, healing and a steadfast reminder of our son that we will forever hold in our hearts," Lisa confirms.

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh, and bonus – they make you breakfast.

The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.

Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

Things To Consider Before Getting Chickens:

First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.

Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple hen house can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.

Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.

Hens will lay eggs through Spring and Summer and into the fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily or even twice a day.

HOW MANY CHICKENS SHOULD I KEEP?

Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.
