LIFESTYLE LETTER
March Home and Design Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love every day. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it every day. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

Local Agent Providing Peace of Mind "My Job Is To Be The Best Part Of Someone's Worst Day" ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
1. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO A CAREER IN THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY? I have experienced firsthand the benefits of being properly insured. I was born and raised in New Orleans, and when I was getting ready to start my freshman year of high school, Hurricane Katrina hit. State Farm® put my family up in an apartment, helped rebuild our house, and took care of us so my school wasn’t interrupted and my dad’s work wasn’t interrupted. Also, when my daughter became really sick and ended up in the hospital, State Farm once again took care of my family.
2. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR OWN STATE FARM AGENCY? I became an agent in 2018, and my experiences created a passion that ultimately led to me applying for my own agency. Sara Anglin State Farm Insurance opened in Nashville in June of 2021. I enjoy being able to share my life experiences with clients and explain what I recommend and why so that they can properly protect themselves. There’s nothing better than when a customer comes in to bring me a gift or sends a card because they’re so grateful for my help. My job is to be the best part of someone’s worst day. I’m also really blessed with developing relationships with my team members and helping them achieve their goals, whether that is in my office or expanding to open their own businesses one day. I’m able to be an aid to them as they pursue their careers and I get to see them grow from salespeople to insurance professionals where the more they get pushed and learn, the better they get.
20

And, to see their excitement of becoming more confident and overcoming some of their fears is very rewarding. I also see this career as a way to be successful without missing a beat of my children’s lives. I have two daughters and I also want them to see what they can achieve with hard work. There’s nothing better than when my 4 year old goes past my sign at the office and says, ‘Mommy, that’s you!’ For her to see that and be able to look up to me in that way is great.
3. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING AN INSURANCE AGENT? An insurance expert assists with purchasing the right policies. When people go online, a lot of times they just price shop and they may not know how little protection they’re getting. They sometimes don’t really understand that until it affects them and by then it’s too late. It’s also really important to find someone who has real life experience in addition to professional experience. Find someone you can have confidence in and who enjoys getting to know you face to face, because the more they get to know you, the more they will care about you and feel responsible for you and your family. Having a local agent with an office nearby is also much better than trying to get through to just anyone at an 800 number. You want to have somebody who can come out, write a check for you right then and there, and get you and your family set up somewhere. Or, to get that rental car right away so you can get to work. Honestly, you can’t put a price on that kind of peace of mind. SaraAnglin.com

I have done 6 real estate transactions with Paula, both as a buyer and seller. She and her team are 5 star in every category. As a buyer, Paula has helped me narrow down the homes we ultimately chose, using both her knowledge of what works best for our family and what homes that we’re considering provide the most value for the price we pay. She is an excellent communicator throughout the entire process, and even when we’ve encountered post-sale issues, Paula was there to help make sure we quickly got comfortable in our new home. As a seller, Paula’s advice when it comes to staging, landscape, and other listing-related details, is unparalleled. If you decide to list your home with her, she will tell you exactly what you need to do to get it sold and I highly recommend taking her advice, to the letter. Regardless of what side of the deal you find yourself on, I can assure you that Paula is the right choice! -CLOUD FAMILY

Kate Figler Shares Her Passions
Kate Figler of Kate Figler Interiors delights in classic design with fresh twists. Below are the four things she's most passionate about seeing in a home. 1. Traditional purpose. “Nashville has a very unique market with new construction and renovations. Selections should not be trendy. Keep elements difficult to remove or replace as timeless as possible, and then layer in something whimsical or fun. I encourage clients to select things that will still look good 25 years from now. Many clients say, ‘I want this house to look like it has been here forever and like it belongs here.’ I spend a lot of time advising clients on that, a lot of time thinking about it, and a lot of time studying it.” 2. Textiles. "I believe your home should reflect your personality. I try to push people to bring in textiles that are one-of-a-kind and super custom. I love mixing different patterns from different materials and wallpaper patterns as well. A throw pillow is a very easy thing to swap out down the road. I encourage people to take risks in those areas. Your home is a unique reflection of you, what you're drawn to, and your taste. Having products in your home that are made by hand by someone halfway across the world.”
24
O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN
3. Incorporating history. “In the south, most of my clients come to me with grandmother's breakfront or dining table or dining room chair, with many antiques that have been handed down through generations. I encourage them to work those into their homes if they're in good shape and handsome. Not everything should be new. Old pieces ground a space.” 4. Make sure what you have in your home tells a story. “Display those inherited items and take all that old china out of the boxes! We can think of a fun way to display antiques in your house. We can make things work for the way you live, whether it’s by using a performance fabric on a piece or a Roman shade instead of drapery. We can ensure that an heirloom chair is in a corner rather than the main sitting area, so it gets less wear and tear.” “Being a chameleon makes this job interesting,” says Kate. Trying to meet my clients where they are and hoping they walk into their homes and say, ‘Oh my gosh, this is so us!’ That’s my ultimate goal.” KateFiglerInteriors.com Instagram: @katefiglerinteriors

2
| “Custom pieces are made by somebody, human hands, not a machine. I encourage people to invest in their homes and to appreciate the quality of what they’re getting.”

“There are ways of repurposing old pieces; there’s a history to them, a patina you can’t get when a whole room is new. I love beautiful finishes that have been around forever, like lacquered brass or marble.”
4

Outsourcing Your Everyday Life Is your to-do list always a mile long, and no matter how much progress you make, it seems to just keep growing? You’re not alone. Between the chores and errands of everyday life, work and family responsibilities and plenty of unexpected challenges that are sure to arise, it can be overwhelming simply making it through the day. Nicole Carver, a business owner, mom of three and military spouse, understands the stressors of daily life. Before launching her
own business, Nicole worked as an executive level assistant across government and corporate settings. Her husband received duty orders for Stuttgart, Germany and their family was stationed there for five years. When they arrived back in the United States, Nicole sought a way to leverage her skill set – one rooted in task management, organization and gaining the trust of busy executives – to help others streamline their own lives.

“When we moved back here to the States, I still had two children in school, a husband that traveled all the time and no family nearby,” said Nicole. “I asked myself, ‘how do I take all of the skill sets that I have and create something that I can do that fills up my needs and makes me feel productive at the end of the day. So I started Carver Concierge.” What began as administrative support for small businesses quickly evolved into providing support for everyday life. Carver Concierge is a lifestyle management and personal assistant brand that abides by the mantra, “If it doesn’t give you joy or make you money, it should be on our list.” The skilled team of detail-oriented lifesavers can take care of things like dry cleaning, returns, scheduling service appointments for the car or home, booking travel, and so much more. If you’re considering a home renovation or remodel, they can even tackle quotes and oversee the management of the project in its entirety. “When you can delegate all those things that are in the way, it frees you up to enjoy your personal life and time,” Nicole shared. “We cover anything that is on someone’s regular to-do list. We wear all the hats.” Outsourcing portions of your personal life can have a tremendous impact on overall productivity, and while full-suite services like Carver Concierge exist, there are a number of tools available to help alleviate timely tasks on your own. “A lot of people are afraid to start letting go of that piece of control,” Nicole said. “A simple way to start is by outsourcing simple tasks like grocery shopping, laundry and returns.”
Services for each of these tasks can exist in the palm of your hand, from Instacart shopping to procuring weekly groceries to local laundry services that will accept and use each client's own preferred products. There are even local services that will pick up and process online or in-store returns. These small changes can make a big impact, and once you’re ready to take the leap with a team of expert task managers, getting started with Carver Concierge is as easy as life is sure to become. “Our internal process and onboarding are extremely streamlined and easy since our goal is to simplify someone’s life,” Nicole said. “We start with a phone call where we talk about working with an assistant and what their budget is, then we draw up a service agreement.” Clients are then assigned a concierge that they have direct contact with. At the beginning of each week, clients have a phone call where they share all the things on their to-do list – groceries, travel arrangements, appointment scheduling, event planning – followed by a mid-week check-in and end-of-week update to stay fully briefed on progress. “We’re a well-seasoned team of professionals,” Nicole added. “We really start out right in lock step with our clients, and then quickly we’re a step ahead. My team has all had professional careers and has run their own busy homes, so there’s not a learning curve.” Currently, Carver Concierge is available in and around the south Nashville area, including Brentwood, Belle Meade, Franklin and neighboring cities. For more information or to initiate a conversation about outsourcing everyday tasks, visit carverconcierge.com, email nicole@carverconcierge.com or call 615-671-4070.

"Homes should be the place where we feel most comfortable. They should be the place where we smile each time we walk in. So, while trends come and go, classics always stay. It's about finding that just-right grouping of items, colors and textures that please you most," says Carolyn Kalil, co-owner of Belle Maison, a French-inspired home and gift store in Franklin. Carolyn operates the store with her daughter, Katie Polenzani. Some of the other popular interior design trends for 2023 include the return of bold color accents, natural stone surfaces, luxe living and statement lighting. Carolyn says another popular direction currently is "softening the look of metals." However, she notes that mixing metals seems to always be a pleasing look. Gold and bronze hardware may be being edged out by selections of brass and polished brass. Citing hundreds of years of French design, Carolyn says there are two gorgeous, signature French looks: French Provincial, which is upscale and classy; and French Country, which is elegant but more rustic. "The French have been mixing and blending these two styles in the same space or rooms seamlessly for decades. For example, without thinking, they might position a 200-year-old, antique bureau with a wire or metal sculpture on top of it. And then have modern art on the same wall behind it," she explains. "The French combine interior design elements in interesting, pleasing styles, and that's one of the main reasons why we launched a store around the concept of doing so," Carolyn adds. French interior design styles have the reputation of using soothing color hues, soft patterns, intricate textures and antique accents to create inviting looks that are both polished and lived-in. Carolyn says she adores analyzing home decor trends, as it relates to history, culture and societal indicators, along with her own interests and those of the store's customers. What began for Carolyn as an eight-week adventure to study abroad in Strasbourg, France, with her high school French class developed into what ultimately became her business passion. “From the moment I got there, I fell in love with it all. The art, the architecture, the people. On the weekends, we’d visit Paris and learn about French history,” she says. "From my first trip, it just felt like home.” Many years later, Katie spent a couple of months studying in Aix-en-Provence and says she felt the same way. Their shared interest eventually fueled a passionate plan for opening a 4,000-squarefoot French store at 443 Cool Springs Blvd., Suite 105. Shoppers select from among a beautiful array of French-inspired furniture, décor, mirrors, tables, dining chairs, tableware, soaps, candles, antiques and accessories. Carolyn and Katie travel regularly throughout the Southeast United States and France to secure French antiques for Belle Maison from private collectors. Just as personal as those collections are Carolyn's suggestions about what to combine in one's own home. "Consider what's popular, and how you might incorporate some of those design elements or accessories, but follow your heart. If your favorite color is aubergine (eggplant purple), then go ahead and enjoy surrounding yourself with it," reminds Carolyn. Buying and selling a home can be such a stressful time in one’s life but working with Gabrielle made the process run smoothly and efficiently. With her go-to attitude, I found that she alleviated much of the stress from the whole process. Suddenly I found I had discovered a new friend rather than just a realtor. Gabrielle is not your typical realtor. She goes above and beyond a typical realtor’s duties. I’ve now used her to buy two homes and to sell one home. All of them ran to my delight and it was a smooth process. Once again, I would sincerely like to recommend Gabrielle. - Leslie and Douglas Gantos, Buyers and Sellers

OPPORTUNITIES REALTOR JAMIE SHEA: MEDIAN HOME SALES PRICES STILL INCREASING, BUT AT SLOWER RATE THAN IN 2022 ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Realtor Jamie Shea
Realtor Jamie Shea Springtime real estate buying and selling observations for the Nashville region come solidly from a Nashville native. Realtor and broker Jamie Shea, with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Woodmont Realty in Brentwood, has been in the real estate business for nearly 25 years. "Buyers currently, and will continue to have, more opportunities this year. Not only with house choices, but being able to negotiate some items. Items like asking for inspection repairs, and home warranties are coming back," he says. With rising inventories and longer days on the market, many local real estate agents agree that present conditions will be easier for buyers. During the last few years, Jamie says the list prices on homes seemed more like a starting bid at an auction and “highest and best” was the common theme. Now, he says sellers are willing to negotiate with buyers as is typical in a normal market. "Most buyers were having to take houses ‘as is’ and only doing inspections to make sure there were no major issues with the house. I personally saw buyers on my listings waive home inspections and appraisals, a tactic I would never advise," Jamie shares. Getting home properties into 'great condition' and pricing them accurately will be key to making sales. Sellers now are sometimes paying closing costs for buyers and being more negotiable on price. Jamie believes the Nashville market is definitely balancing out. "It could not sustain the astronomical price increases forever." He also confirms that new builds will remain a necessity as they almost always have, adding that the Middle Tennessee market is continuing to grow, and is still a target for major companies moving to the area. "Builders have shifted their marketing, and buyers are able to negotiate and design the home they want. In some areas, builders previously were taking a 'take it or leave it' approach as they knew the inventory was so low and to keep up with demand." CONTINUED >

"All this being said," asserts Jamie, "home prices will continue to increase but not as sharply as in past few years. Sellers, however, need to adjust expectations on marketing and selling their home. Instead of listing your home, getting multiple offers, and being under contract in the first weekend, you may be on the market for a bit. You know, like a stable market."
1925 Salem Road
In 1998, Jamie started appraising residential properties. Following in his uncle's footsteps, in 2006, he decided to take the leap and go into real estate sales. With a background in appraisals, it was a natural transition. After working as an affiliate broker for several years, Jamie decided that the next step was to obtain his broker's license. He received it in 2016, and has since received several designations including: Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI), Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR). 615.661.7800 / Mobile: 615.403.6597 WoodmontRealty.com/agents/78023-Jamie-Shea JamieShea.WoodmontRealty.com

Ford Parade Home 2022 Photo By Marty Paoletta
Rosebrooke Of fers Lu x u r y Homes in Brent wood is trending. Layered textures within a modern home, such as the Parade House Bella Vita Interiors designed for Ford Classic Homes in Rosebrooke, make a space feel curated, which is what clients request. Integrating earthy color palettes and natural materials in both the building and furnishing details allows for a connection to be established between the Interior and outdoor living spaces. Easy access from the home's interior to the porches, pool, and patio areas make a home feel even more spacious and is an important element of any design plan.” Autumnflora Miklich Bella Vita Interiors for Ford Classic Homes Parade House, winner of the “Best Interior Design" Award from the Professional Judges' Awards at the Parade of Homes “One of the biggest shifts we are seeing in the design industry is the push towards warmer tones for interiors; rich wood tones like hickory and walnut are showing up in a big way in flooring, cabinetry, and furniture. We also see deeply pigmented brown tones replacing the cooler greys and high-contrast black and white for interiors and exteriors alike. One of my personal favorites is the boldly veined marbles that are popping up in a variety of hues—violet, emerald, and crimson are a few of the favorites we have been pinning to all of our inspiration boards for 2023! Stephanie Handley, Studio 36 Design - Legend Homes Parade House, "Best of Show" in both the Professional Judges' Award and the People's Choice Award, "Best Interior Design" in the People's Choice Awards When complete, Rosebrooke will feature 248 homes. Prices start at $2 million and range to $7 million. You can find more information about the development on their website or Instagram.

"Our vision for Rosebrooke is to develop a luxury community where beautiful and livable homes coupled with premier resort-style amenities create an environment that fosters neighborly interaction and creates lasting family memories," Mike Ford, co-developer and president/owner of Ford Classic Homes. A new, first-class neighborhood is on the way for those interested in a Brentwood address. Previously a horse farm, the Rosebrooke development will maintain the idyllic natural beauty of the pastoral land while constructing elegant, classic custom homes. Rosebrook is inspired by Witherspoon, the first community created by Ford Classic Homes and CPS Land, LLC. There are less than 20 homesites left there, and the Rosebrooke developers believe Brentwood needs another community with luxury homes of that caliber. Amenities on offer at Rosebrooke - adult and children’s pools, clubhouse, an event lawn, and walking and bike trails - will be ready by the summer of 2024 and will create a sense of community amongst neighbors. With a Builder’s Guild of seven to ensure tight architectural control, nothing will be commonplace about this development. Everything will be specialized and unique with painstaking detail and a lovely cohesive flow. Rosebrooke hosted the 2022 Parade of Homes and featured six houses. Only two are left on the market. Two Parade Home designers share their expectations for design trends in 2023, all of which were featured in the Parade Homes and all of which can be incorporated into any Rosebrooke home. “Warm, inviting, and livable are three design elements I see being increasingly important in 2023. This year, warmer tones are gaining popularity for interiors, and a departure from the gray and cooler tones

Nashville Glassworks MEETING A NEED IN THE ART COMMUNITY
Nashville Glassworks owners Susan Henderson Isel and Martha Morales Purucker are ready to meet a huge need in the Nashville glass art world. Their recently opened studio has bespoke art, supplies and instruction. It also takes commissions. Martha and Susan are happy to provide a place for continuing education in the glass community.
QCL: TELL US ABOUT NASHVILLE GLASSWORKS AND WHAT THE BUSINESS OFFERS TO CUSTOMERS. “Nashville Glassworks is a one-of-a-kind retail supply, teaching art studio, and gallery for fused glass, stained glass, and mosaic art. We are the only small business retail glass art store in Nashville and nearly the entire state.”
CL: WHO ARE THE TWO OF YOU, AND HOW DID YOU FIND EACH OTHER? “Co-Owner and artist Martha Morales Purucker was the studio manager at fused glass studio This Little Light (now closed). Susan Henderson Isel was a new artist and glass
hoarder searching for a store. Introduced by a mutual Glass acquaintance, the rest is history. Martha has art at the Curb Center for Music (being reinstalled at Centennial park later this year). Her mosaic art piece “Marisol” is on display at the Nashville International Airport and is featured in the exhibit ‘Identity Crisis: Who are we becoming?’ You can find it in Concourse A across from Gate 2.”
CL: WHAT DOES SHARING THIS ART FORM WITH THE COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU? “We truly believe the Universe, God, and The Arts brought us together because greatness can happen. We are two minority women with disabilities in the arts in a revitalizing field. There have been many glass stores in Nashville over the years, but none have survived. We hope that by combining all the mediums, we can be a point of unity for the glass community in Tennessee.” nashvilleglassworks.com Instagram: @nashville_glassworks

Rooted in holistic belief, Chef Laura Lea has built a strong business by teaching her clients how to heal their bodies and minds from the inside out. Known for her effortless approach; Laura Lea pours her past of heartache, stress, and feeling out of balance in her own body into every recipe she creates. Teaching women how to break the noise of societal standards, Laura Lea wants her clients to understand the power of truly knowing their bodies and what it means to nourish them. Laura Lea’s journey began when she decided to take a step outside of the corporate work box. “I remember working in NYC and feeling so anxious all of the time. It was not until I tuned inward that I began to understand my triggers and was able to eliminate them one by one by using food. I want to give women the power of knowing their bodies well enough that no emotional stress can wear them down” says Laura Lea. With diet culture telling women that only eating chicken and rice will leave them satisfied, Chef Laura Lea breaks that narrative by offering hormone and food counseling, both in person and online. “What a lot of people do not understand is that your hormones actually play a huge role in your digestion. Not everyone can digest food the same way. It is so important to me that I teach my clients the difference so that they can start making choices that make them feel their best selves.” Taking heartache and combining it with her love for cooking, Laura Lea is a great example of how even the bad can be used for good. With a newly anticipated cookbook, “Recipes for an Aching Heart” coming soon, we asked her for a sneak peek recipe. Easy, delicious, and sure to be loved by your pickiest eater; we would expect nothing less from Laura Lea. So grab your best friend and head to the kitchen. We can’t wait to hear how much you love this one. Enjoy! CONTINUED >

The word wellness can mean so many different things to different people. Many think about physical wellness and may visualize hot tea and healthy foods along with fitness and yoga. For some, it simply means a warm bath away from the world’s noise or spending much-needed time with friends. And what if wellness meant a road trip just a few hours away to a cabin retreat amongst some of the most picturesque views of nature in Tennessee? According to takeitpersonelly.com, "one of the best ways to escape the dull routine is to go on a road trip with friends or family. A road trip gives you opportunities to explore new places, meet new people, find new perspectives, rejuvenate your energy, relax and enjoy life. More importantly, a trip helps to heal your mind, body, and soul. Getting out of town, meeting new people and discovering new areas can be a boost to your self-esteem and confidence. Capture those memories with creative photos can also bring a sense of peace once you are back to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY

The best overall restaurant experience in the city? It could be at your own house, Airbnb, or other preferred location. Whether you want a break from cooking, are tired of dining out, or hosting out-of-town guests and want to provide a dining experience to impress, The Party Chefs want to literally bring the party to you in the form of top-tier restaurant experiences. Founded here in Nashville by award-winning Chef and Brentwood resident Tom Eckert and Food Writer/ Content Creator Delia Jo Ramsey, The Party Chefs is a passion project of people whose lives already revolve around food. The owners say to picture The Party Chefs like an Uber or an Airbnb for dining experiences, streamlining a process efficiently. Officially launching in March, The Party Chefs offer a new take on culinary-forward house parties. The idea is to keep the whole process low lift for customers, from start to finish. Simply go to thepartychefs.com and select a calendar date for your meal. Then, choose from a range of local chefs, menus, and price points to book. Director of Operations/Partner Paul O'Grady runs all of the day-to-day operations, but they say it's a true team effort, focused on consistently providing a wide array of menu levels and price points to satisfy every need. "Nashville has become a worldwide destination for its food scene, from tongue-scorching Nashville hot chicken to comforting meat and threes and award-winning chefs. The Party Chefs' broad array of talents, cuisines, and price points is a way to showcase this city in a new way," says Delia. The owners say some of the city's most renowned and respected chefs are already on the roster, alongside Nashville-born home chefs with a knack for catering. Chefs, their menus, and their availability/ schedules will change, so customers can check back frequently to see new and exciting different flavors and faces on the lineup. "The calendar will always be fluid, but we plan to have a set number of staple chefs, so there is always availability, day or night" explains Tom. "The Party Chefs offers a truly intimate experience, without all of the work," says Tom. "From bachelorettes to Airbnbs to private homes and special occasions, we want you to call us to bring the party to you." Instagram: @thepartychefs partychefs.com

THE ULTIMATE CHAUFFEURING MACHINE
AU TO C LU B | AU TO + M A RI NE
Let's get straight into controversy-the new BMW i7 looks. Love it or hate it (there seems to be little middle ground) the new i7 certainly looks distinct. I wasn’t a fan initially but the more I learned about the reason it looks the way it does, I changed my mind. Here’s a quote from the official BMW press release for the i7“The presence of the front end is complemented by a clear and monolithic surface designThis gives the front end of the new BMW 7 Series a progressive and memorable appearance”
Progressive? Maybe. Memorable? Absolutely, and I think that’s the best compliment that could be paid to the new 7 series’ exterior appearance- you won’t forget it. BMW also states in its press release that the new 7 series was designed specifically for “particularly demanding target groups in a globalized marketspace” it then goes on to say that the company's most important sales region is now China. Once I read this it all made sense. If you’re not familiar with the Chinese car market simply google “Chinese luxury cars” and you’ll see what I mean. Compared to others in this space the new 7 series is downright subdued, even conservative. The hottest trend in the Chinese luxury car world is a gargantuan front end. Think “monolithic”- a word usually reserved for giant stone structures. Needless to say, designing a luxury car for the Chinese market means its going to stand out here in the states.
INTERIOR So that’s that, now that we understand the exterior styling we can move on to the best thing about the new i7- the interior. The model we drove had the optional “executive package 2” ($3,700) meaning it comes with automatic doors. Press a little button on the door handle and the door glides open revealing a gorgeous interior draped in soft leather, crystal controls and the most amazing looking speakers you’ve ever seen. The Bowers and Wilkins Surround sound speakers are arguably the best sounding speakers you can get in a car and the brushed silver artwork coverings offer a lovely contrast to the black merino leather and dark Fineline Open Pore wood trim. Slicing from door to door across the center console is a crystal light bar that houses various controls. The light changes color based on mode settings and does a great job giving the interior a glowing ambiance.

DRIVE The new i7 is fully electric, all wheel drive and produces 536hp and 549 lb-ft of torque so needless to say it has more than enough power but so do almost all electric cars nowadays. What not all electric cars have is a ride that rivals Rolls Royce. I’m not saying the BMW i7 rides better than a Rolls Royce Phantom but, I’m confident that if I was blindfolded and driven in the back of each I’d probably have a hard time telling them apart. It’s that good. Is this BMW the ultimate driving machine? Well if you’re looking at it from a ride perspective, absolutely. Nothing south of a half a million dollar price tag is going to give you a ride this plush.
TECH This car has more tech than anything I've ever driven-and that's saying something. Aside from the biggest rear screen you can get in a car- 31 inches and 8k, it's got more features and functions than most owners would likely even use. The rear passengers each have control screens built into the door handles which can deploy the screen (completely obscuring the drivers rear view), open and close window shades, recline the seats, activate various massage features and change the “mood” of the car. The screens are a nice feature and with this amount of tech they’re pretty necessary but the touch response time is a little laggy. I'm sure there will be people who own and drive this car for years who are completely oblivious about some of the features this car has. If I'm honest, it's a bit much for my liking. I like simple, intuitive and easy to use cars but this one comes with a pretty steep learning curve if you're not coming straight from another BMW. The BMW i7 may require a computer science masters from MIT to operate but mastering all the tech might just be part of the appeal.
72
AU TO C LU B | AU TO + M A RI NE
CONCLUSION The EV market is getting more and more competitive but the new BMW i7 stands alone at the very summit of the Luxury EV market. If you have to have an electric car and want the best and more luxurious of the breed, nothing comes remotely close.

TRANSFORMING OLD STORAGE SPACES INTO NEW LIVING AREAS
76
GA R AGE T E CH | HOM E + DE S I GN
Make Over Your Garage With Style Home improvement is a never-ending process. New designs, improved materials, repurposed space – all these things and more can add style and value to the family home. Since homebuilding began, there have been several improvement projects which have proven to be particularly popular with homeowners across the country. Closet upgrades, bathroom retrofits and kitchen redesigns top the list, with each improvement known to increase home utility and resale value. However, despite the wide range of remodeling projects, one area of the home seems to have often been overlooked – the garage. Traditionally, most garages have been relegated to just being places to park vehicles and to store tools and outdoor equipment. Recently, garages have begun to receive much needed attention from remodelers and homeowners. Spawned in part by the “man cave” and “she shed” trends, the humble vehicle storage area has found a new lease in life. Indeed, today’s garages are increasingly being transformed into extended living areas. While storage remains the dominant use for the space, it is now storage with style. “Although the trend is a relatively recent phenomenon for many homeowners, we have actually been doing garage remodeling projects since 2000,” says Sandra Sokol, owner of Closets by Design of Nashville, Middle Tennessee’s leader in optimized storage solutions. “We did over 100 turnkey garage projects during 2021, and we will more than double that number this year.” After spending years viewing garages through the filter of vehicle and tool storage, many homeowners are unaware of the many different design options available for space transformation. “Most redesign projects begin with the installation of custom cabinets,” says Sandra. “In our
factory in Franklin, we manufacture our own cabinetry, including tall floor units, work benches, upper storage bins and rolling cabinets. By building our own cabinets, we can ensure that they are perfect dimensions for each garage.” One of Closet by Design’s most popular cabinetry lines is their proprietary Silver II collection. “The Silver II cabinets and accessories are crafted in black- and silver-colored materials,” says Sandra. “The modern color scheme coupled with special finishes give the Silver II line a sleek, industrial appearance, which is perfect for many customer garages.” Along with cabinet replacement, Closets by Design also offers other storage upgrades, including their Design Wall coverings, which provide additional hardware and accessories for storing yard, gardening, sport and leisure items. They can also provide custom garage flooring solutions for further enhancing garage appearance and utility. Homeowners seeking to upgrade their garages are often uncertain as to how to begin their projects. Fortunately, Sandra and her team make the process simple and painless. “We begin every project by providing an in-home assessment during which we will discuss customer preferences and options,” says Sandra. “Subsequently, we will measure, design and price the project – all during the same appointment. If the client is ready to move forward, we will complete the contracts and assign an installation date at the same time.” As with all Closets by Design projects, customers are involved from start to finish. “We want our clients to be fully involved in the design and pricing process,” says Sandra. “We encourage them to pick and choose all options, which enables them to establish their own budgets.

All in all, it is a very comfortable and fun process for both our clients and our designers.” To prepare for the project implementation, homeowners will need to temporarily clean out their garages of any boxes, tubs and other items taking up storage space. These items can be returned to the garage as soon as the cabinet and/or flooring installation is complete, which usually takes just one day. Depending upon the size and complexity of the project, most projects can go from approval to completion within just a few weeks. Immediately thereafter, homeowners can begin to enjoy the storage and increased home value arising from their upgraded garage. 3 Hot Trends
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY
in Kitchen Design
A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.
TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.
WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.
CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
