As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love.

Brentwood Planning And Codes Director Retires After 28-Year Career

Carlock Automotive Group Purchases Freeway Honda In Birmingham

Jeff Dobson was hired for City of Brentwood in 1994 as city planner, then promoted in 2009 to lead the department, where he remained for the past 13 years. City Manager Kirk Bednar says Jeff’s influence, leadership and knowledge will be sorely missed, due to his ability to find balance on many complex, controversial issues “Jeff's influence on Brentwood can be seen across the community and will be felt for years to come,” Kirk adds.

Nashville-headquartered Carlock Automotive Group purchased Freeway Honda in Birmingham, Alabama, adding to the company’s portfolio of 19 franchises and one preowned automotive center. Carlock Automotive Group President Clay Carlock says, “We’re excited to add the Honda franchise to our automotive space, because it’s such a well-respected volume brand made with the highest quality." Carlock Automotive Group owns 11 locations in Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. For more details, visit CarlockCars.com.

“I made the footprint bigger than what I currently need so I have options. I could add horse stalls, have room to park an RV or a tractor and room to play or work on a project. So the best advice is to make sure you have enough space.”

A lot of people took on new hobbies during their long months of sheltering at home. For Mark Williams, owner of RSU Contractors, his pandemic-born project went a little further than banana bread, gardening, and exercise, however. This new hobby barn on their 9-acre farm “Hidden Acres” is a rustic-glam sight to behold, and it also welcomed the reception following Mark and Theresa's daughter's wedding this summer. When I first met the incredible husband-and-wife duo for a tour of this epic hobby barn, I was quick to ask about the animals I spotted in the field beside the barn. One was a pig delighting in rolling in the mud amid the blazing summer sun. We deviated so I could go and meet them. Two friendly family pet pigs stumbled over to bask in the attention: Weasie and Iggy-Pig, while Willie-Goat was also eager for an ear scratch. An older sheep, Clarise plus Daisy-May and Elsie-May also help set the scene and induce smiles at Hidden Acres. “Happy as a pig in mud.” Indeed. Making it feel comfortable is no surprise, as this isn’t their first time doing something like this. Mark's RSU team has been handling big projects since 1982, including room additions, basements, attics and whole-house remodels. But obviously, this project was much closer to home. He said he drew inspiration for the new barn from past projects like Mint Spring Farms and other outdoor projects using rough lumber that motivated the overall look and feel of the space. Mark shared that both his grandfather and his uncle were farmers and he spent a lot of childhood summers at his Uncle Ed's farm. Mark also added that there is still an old barn on the property that was built in the 1890s, but that time has taken its toll on this barn.

In the space where the new barn stands, a previous barn had burned down. “The first barn was similar in layout and it was about 85% complete when it was struck by lightning. It was a total loss except for some of the utility work. I did learn a lot and made some incremental improvements that made this barn even better,” explains Mark. “One thing I learned from the first barn that burned was how to make the sliding barn doors better. With this barn, I made these large custom doors that allow us to open up the space for ventilation and I can easily bring in an RV.” There’s also room for a tractor — namely, a small toy tractor I had to ask about. “Someone told me ‘Every barn should have a tractor’ so I put that right there,” laughs Mark. What advice would you give to someone wanting to undertake a similar space? "I made the footprint bigger than what I currently need so I have options. I could add horse stalls, have room to park an RV or a tractor and room to play or work on a project. So the best advice is to make sure you have enough space." What’s the secret to having a successful business for 40 years? What advice would you give to someone just beginning their career? "I had a simple philosophy "Quality work is the key to Success" with a service business you have to deliver consistent quality and then you will get the R & R which is repeated business and referrals. In business, there are really two ways in which you can compete and set yourself apart. Either do things better than the competition or do things different like finding your niche. If you can do both then you have an opportunity for a really successful business," explains Mark.

At Freedom Reigns Ranch, people and horses work together to heal one another. Although primarily focused on teenagers, the organization also assists children and young adults who've been through trauma. Carissa Ramsdell, FRR founder and executive director, can sympathize with those who come to the farm, both human and animal. “Because of the abuse and trauma I endured growing up, I was super angry at the world, at God, and everyone and everything,” she says. “But God basically used my horse, Boston, who was also dealing with a difficult past, to save my life. Through working and training with my horse, God unlocked my own heart.” Freedom Reigns Ranch was officially founded in October of 2015, but Carissa was helping kids with her horse, which she got in 2009, long before that. “Some kids from church were going through some challenging things, and being outside with one of God’s most beautiful creatures was really something that brought them a lot of peace.” While caring for and training with Boston, she watched them become more confident and empowered. “They stepped outside of their own comfort zones in a way that led to growth, not only with a horse, but in their everyday lives. We basically combined a broken horse with a child whose heart had been shattered and watched God heal both at the same time.” Shortly after, a friend came to volunteer, someone donated a pony, and then she ended up taking a rescue horse that had been abandoned in a dog pen. “It just snowballed, and all of a sudden these kids were coming and more people were coming to help,” says Carissa. “Then more horses needed rescuing, too.” At that point, she knew she had to start her own nonprofit. “Caring for horses is expensive, plus we felt from the very beginning that we were never supposed to charge anything. So, we really needed to create an avenue for folks who believed in what we were doing to support it.” This summer, the ranch will have officially provided more than 10,000 hours of mentorship. “We have about 50 individuals that come twice a month for the season and some who stay for multiple seasons because they really need this safe space to continue to thrive in their lives,” she says. For many of these kids, getting up on a horse and trusting it is life-changing. “I see this unbelievable thing happening where they're building this relationship with the horse,” she says. “We usually share that horse's story -- over half of our herd has their own history of abuse, starvation and neglect. As you watch, it's like these puzzle pieces coming together and you see how they realize that the horse that had been thrown away by the world, means the world to them and they connect that with their own life. That then translates into their own emotional sense of well-being.”

The ranch has been leasing about 8 acres in Thompson’s Station, which houses 12 horses, but it needs to expand to provide its services to more people. “We have a wait list that extends 12 to 16 months and over a hundred kids are on it,” says Carissa. “Our hope and prayer is for someone to grant or donate 25 to 40 acres somewhere in Southern Williamson County or even Northern Murray County.” They’re also busy raising money for a long-term lease and/or to build up the new land and make any renovations necessary. Individuals and corporations can go to #UNimpossible to donate. “We will be doing a big fundraising push on Giving Tuesday on Nov. 29 that will be social-media based.”

42

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | L I F E + CULTURE

They were also planning on doing a fundraising gala on Sept. 10, but because money is tight for everyone right now, they’ll be having a fun hoedown for the community and donors instead. “We’re doing it true to our style -- it's a boots and bling style hoedown,” she says. Carissa says she’s amazed and overwhelmed to be a part of something like this. “Going from not having a reason to live 10 or 15 years ago and feeling like I would never overcome what I had been through to watching so many kids find hope again, there is nothing better. Watching the trajectory of their lives change course because God chose to use a horse to reach their hearts -I've seen it so many times and it's special every time.” FreedomReignsRanch.com

The Mother Behind All Mothers and Her Determined Quest to End Poverty Underprivileged moms and children in Nashville have a guardian angel, and she’s inviting you to come along.

ARTICLE BY LACEY JOHNSON

Imagine a world where no mother loses sleep over how to feed her baby. Where no child is without a warm blanket in the winter and a clean shirt on their back. Where curiosity supersedes condemnation. Where, instead of frowning upon someone’s cycle of addiction or misfortune, it’s easy to remember that, in this life, we don’t all start off at the same distance from the finish line. Where the question isn’t so much “What can I do for my children?” but “What can I do for all children?”

Where we don’t merely gaze across distant borders, continents or oceans for those who need help being walked back to safety, but to the untraveled corners and unfamiliar edges of our own towns and cities. Where we don’t stop at tossing temporary fixes at heart-breaking symptoms, but explore the origin of inequality. And, ultimately, where it’s understood that poverty, which affects one out of five children in the United States, isn’t a “you” or a “they” problem, but an “us” problem. Of course, that world doesn’t exist. At least not yet. But, for Janie Busbee, founder of the explosively successful Nashville-based nonprofit, Mother to Mother, which has distributed more than 15 million baby and children items to date, and who was declared by her own mother to have “come out of the womb obsessed with inequality,” it’s a vision she casts daily. One pregnant with the kinds of doors she’s willing to swing open and the kinds of battles she’s willing to confront. Head on and heart blazing. Altruism was organically sewn into her from birth, though its seed was fertilized with a fiery passion for helping children in the early 2000s, when she and her husband were living in Boston for his retina fellowship. During this time, Janie enjoyed a successful career at Morgan Stanley, and spent her free hours volunteering at a battered women’s shelter. Except she noticed something troubling. While the organization offered an arsenal of tools for women, it offered nothing for the children of these women. This observation inspired her to create a few programs in the Boston area. One day, a mother wandered into the shelter with her 5 year-old son, who was in need of a backpack to hold his school books. But the shelter only had one to spare, and it boasted a glittery Cinderella design. “All I could do was scratch my head and say, ‘We’re in America, in this day and age, and we’re going to send this little boy, whose life is in upheaval, to school with a Cinderella backpack? Where he’ll be teased by the other kids? There’s got to be a better way,’” Janie says. On instinct, she phoned some power players in the area to help her gather backpacks for the kids. Within days, as a result of her bravery and persistence, there were roughly 20,000 backpacks being delivered. “I thought to myself, ‘OK, this is what I’m going to do. I’m going to start a charity that helps mothers and children,’” Janie says. It was 2004 and Janie and her husband were in the midst of packing up their life in Boston to put down fresh roots in Nashville, as he was joining Tennessee Retina. Before the move, Janie asked her attorney to set up Mother to Mother. She then bid farewell to the finance world in order to spend her days venturing to hospitals in and around Music City–exploring the dialogues and paradigms of its nurses and social workers, and scoping out the most urgent needs within the communities. Her first program was “A Baby Shower in a Bag,” which supplied essentials like diapers, wipes and pacifiers to new moms in need. And, from there, she kept going.

“I quickly realized I wasn’t confronting an issue where some mothers are in need of a few things, or even a lot of things. Some mothers have no love, no money, no training, no support and no opportunities. They need everything you can imagine,” Janie says. In an age where so many of us fill Pinterest boards with baby shower inspirations and gorgeously-styled maternity photoshoots we wish to emulate, a staggering number of women give birth without an essential item or a well wish to their name. For them, the concern over purchasing a car seat isn’t about mulling over which model is the plushest or the safest. Or even the most cost-effective. It’s the luxury of owning one at all. This painful discovery inspired Janie’s feet to continue hitting the pavement each day. It’s what motivated her to secure a warehouse with shelves that would always be stocked–and continuously emptied–of diapers, formulas, cribs and bouncers. Now, 18 years later, she has 268 partners, including Vanderbilt Children’s and Safe Haven, with daily distributions to hospitals, schools, shelters and foster care programs, among other organizations, including a program that stretches into rural areas. “From adoption agencies to potential foster families, anybody who helps kids, we help,” Janie says. She welcomes donations from locals all day long. And she’s attracted the support of celebrities as well, including Jessica Alba, who provides boxes of Honest diapers and other personal care items. Kristin Cavallari, who founded Uncommon James and Little James, chose Mother to Mother as her exclusive charity in the United States. Janie’s shelves are filled with adorable onesies from Kristin’s baby and kid brand, and she receives intricate pieces of jewelry to be gifted to the moms, nurses and social workers on holidays. In recent years, she founded Give a Damn, a line of merchandise with totes, T-shirts and hoodies, among other stylish items, that pour 100 percent of its profits into Mother to Mother. “Some people won’t support Mother to Mother directly, but they shop, so I started it to create another revenue source to help low-income moms,” Janie says. Also a mother herself, to a 16 year-old son who attends Montgomery Bell Academy, despite her privilege, she refers to the mothers and children she helps as “my people.” She's not interested in being anyone’s savior from afar, or even at arm’s length; she’s embraced them as her friends. She meets them at their story so that she can empower them to move beyond it. She speaks tenderly of a young woman named Sydney, who was 22 years old, 9 months pregnant, living out of a van and struggling with addiction the day she waddled into Janie’s warehouse. Her waxing belly was fully exposed because she couldn’t afford maternity clothes. Her shoulders were turned in and her gaze was lowered and sad, as though harboring a world of grief and pain. Janie counseled her, got her into a rehabilitation program, helped her secure a job, an apartment and a car, and provided CONTINUED >

all essentials, including a carseat, for her newborn son, Leo. Heartbreakingly, Sydney died in a tragic car accident when her baby boy was just 3 ½ months old– less than a year after being taken under Janie’s wing. But, because Leo had been strapped tightly into his carseat–something Sydney never could have afforded otherwise–he survived. “Working to solve poverty is about so much more than giving people food and clothes. It saves lives in ways that many people don’t even dream about. And it can change the whole story of things, generationally,” says Janie. Janie knows that some people don’t resonate with her mission, but that doesn’t give her any pause. Instead, it adds fuel to it. “I know some people think what I do is weird. I’ve never been poor. I quit a successful career in finance and I pay myself nothing. I can’t give you an impressive reason as to why I’m motivated to do what I do. But I can tell you that I genuinely lose sleep over inequality. That’s why I won’t stop. We need to come together as humans, stop punishing the poor and fix this,” she says. So, then, what’s Janie’s next goal for Mother to Mother? A multi-dimensional plan of education, employment and

50

I NSP IR E D BY | LOCAL SERVI CE S

mentorship that thrives on a bedrock of encouragement and love. “The only way to break the cycle of poverty is to create opportunities for those in need. And, while I think there should be a Mother to Mother in every city, I know that I can give a mother diapers but, in a month, she’s going to need more,” Janie says. Which means her long-term goal is to no longer be needed. “It’s easy for a wealthy person to look at someone who’s struggling and say, ‘Why don’t they just work harder?’ but the truth is that our world is segregated by money. This is why my mission has always been to solve poverty. I love what I do, but I would love even more to close my doors due to there no longer being a need for social services.” And, most significantly, she’s got a challenge for every heart who might find itself being tugged by this story. “Get involved with people you have no reason to meet. You won’t find them at your country club or favorite restaurant. They aren’t going to fall into your lap, but they exist and their needs exist. Step out of your comfort zone and learn about them as human beings. And, if you can meet a need or give them an opportunity to empower themselves, I hope you’ll do it.”

BURN BOOT CAMP

Get Benefits Of Personal Training In Exciting, Encouraging Group Setting ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

ABOUT BURN BOOT CAMP

“All of us within Burn Boot Camp believe in people -- personally, professionally, physically and emotionally. We’re a community first and a gym second. This is a place where you can truly belong, where you feel inspired and empowered to transform.” Franchises for the fourth time by Entrepreneur and the No. 3 Top New Franchise. Within five years of franchising, the company opened 260-plus locations and sold more than 400 territories in most states. Now, 335 locations exist in 40 states.

A TYPICAL BURN WEEKLY PROTOCOL INVOLVES: Inspire / Empower / Transform. Challenging yet encouraging 45-minute cardio/strength fitness workouts are promised from the new Burn Boot Camp team located at 204 Ward Circle in Brentwood. Designed to provide opportunities for certified personal trainers to push participants to transform their lives, Burn's Brentwood co-leader knows firsthand what results are possible because he's been a Burn trainer at Nolensville for 3.5 years. Andrew Saucier, Brentwood's Burn franchise partner with his wife, Leigh Ann Saucier, assures Burn is way more than just a gym. "All of us within Burn Boot Camp believe in people -- personally, professionally, physically and emotionally. We're a community first and a gym second. This is a place where you can truly belong, where you feel inspired and empowered to transform," he says. Leigh Ann emphasizes that it's definitely a family gym, too. The Sauciers indicate Burn clients enjoy access to unlimited 45-minute workouts, produced by top trainers, designed to engage one's full body and deliver complete body change. Each workout takes place on their signature 'floating floor,' which helps produce results for every fitness level, he adds. Burn Boot Camp was founded by husband and wife Devan and Morgan Kline in 2012. Purpose, passion, and community are the building blocks of Burn. Initially, a group workout offered in the parking lot of a gymnastics studio, the program quickly gained popularity to become one of the fastest-growing fitness concepts, ultimately driving Devan and Morgan to begin franchising the brand in 2015. Devan and Morgan live in Cornelius, North Carolina, with their children, and they still train camps. In 2020, the company was recognized as one of the Top 50 Fastest-Growing

Andrew says people can join this local fitness-based community that helps other members set and truly reach fitness goals. "Burn workouts are always different, never the same, until it's time to test fitness with our strength and conditioning test or athlete games. We train to get stronger, faster and leaner, but the real change happens mentally and emotionally," he adds. "Our goal at Burn Boot Camp is to instill confidence in our members. Confidence that they are capable of meeting the challenges in their lives. Once they have that confidence, physical changes come next." As a gym designed for busy lifestyles, Burn offers free Child Watch, personal meetings with trainers, and a universal membership that allows members to visit any Burn gym without drop-in fees, says Leigh Ann. Prior to opening in August, Andrew hosted pop-up camps at locations such as Brentwood Nutrition. Leigh Ann says they're awarding a free six-month membership through a ticket entry method. Those interested in the offer will receive one "ticket" for every pop-up camp or event attended; every new friend brought to participate; and every social post that's tagged after a camp. She says the drawing will take place during their soft opening in August. brentwoodtn@burnbootcamp.com BurnBootCamp.com/locations/Brentwood-TN CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2

Three Local Kids Who Know Good Food

A FOOD AND BEVERAGE WRITER’S DAUGHTER, A CHEESEBOARD PROTEGE, AND A HOT CHICKEN ENTHUSIAST

Charlotte LaCorte CheeseGal’s Adorable and Hilarious Oldest Daughter, and Unofficial “Baby Ina”

Charlotte LaCorte is a natural in front of the camera, just like her mama, CheeseGal. Even at 4 years old (5 in August, she’d tell you), Charlotte already knows more about food than many adults do. “Um, that’s prosciutto,” she’s quick to correct the photographer who asks if she’d like to eat a little ham for the photoshoot. But Charlotte’s favorite part of her Mama’s cheese boards are the strawberries, actually. Growing up as the daughter of local Nashville favorite “CheeseGal” Cortney LaCorte, Charlotte was quick to claim her own space in the spotlight, earning fans with her fantastic smiles, hilarious quips, and “Baby Ina” cooking demos and day-inthe-life videos on her mom’s account, @cheesegal. Cortney LaCorte, AKA “Cheese Gal,” is a full-time food and cocktail content creator and mom of two beautiful girls, Charlotte and Ellie. Her husband, Chris, is a country music songwriter and producer who recently celebrated his second No. 1 as a songwriter and currently has his third single on country radio. According to 4-year-old Charlotte, “Mommy makes cheeseboards and sometimes martinis. Daddy writes songs, and I like when they are on the radio.” The LaCortes love to cook together, and spend time together as a family. Charlotte says her favorite food in the world is her Dad’s Pasta Limone. Cortney also shares

some of their family’s go-to recipes, including that Pasta Limone, on social media, plus spends time perfecting dirty martini, bloody mary, and margarita recipes, while also recommending great wines for grown-ups that are quick to sell out Trader Joe’s locations nationwide. When she’s not hamming it up on camera, Charlotte enjoys playing with her equally adorable baby sister, Ellie, and going to her favorite restaurants, which include locally-owned Radish, Tex-Mex haven Superica, and the American classic, Taco Bell. Charlotte says the worst thing she’s ever eaten was mangoes. “I do not like! And my school just keeps trying to make me eat them!” she vents. She then goes on to describe her perfect day of Nashville dining, beginning with toast and eggs for breakfast, followed by her favorite grain bowl at Radish

(a kids grain bowl with Napa cabbage, crispy baked chicken, pickled red onion, avocado, cucumbers, crispy chickpeas and ranch). For dinner, she chooses something many kids would agree on, Chick-Fil-A. Her go-to order: Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets, fries and lemonade, plus ice cream for dessert. Charlotte’s advice to picky eaters and people who are hesitant to try new things? “Well, my Nana is kind of a picky eater, and do you know why? She doesn’t like pimento. I tried to make her eat that and I told her you have to try things you don’t like! She also doesn’t like chocolate chips on pancakes but she tried them for me.” Wrapping up the interview and photoshoot at Gracie’s Milkshake Bar at L&L Market, Charlotte sips on a unicorn-themed milkshake and exclaims, “Thank you! This is the best day of my life!” And she doesn’t even have to be asked to say “cheese” to get that grin. CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2

Mason Eckert

Nashville’s Teenage Hot Chicken Connoisseur

It’s 4:41pm on Wednesday, one of the hottest days of 2022 thus far, and Tom Eckert knows exactly where his son is...He’s about to eat Nashville hot chicken for the third day that week. And this is nothing new. Mason Eckert has been eating Music City’s signature fiery fowl all over town since the age of 9. Turning 14 in August, Lori and Tom Eckert’s son, Mason, already has made a name for himself in the Nashville hot chicken scene, and local chefs try their hardest to overwhelm him with spice -- but the teen has yet to be bested by even the hottest of the hot.

62

K I D S COR N E R | L IFE + CULTURE

“Are you coming in with you your son today?” asks the Prince’s Hot Chicken employee when Mason’s dad Tom calls to place an order. The whole team has come to recognize the Eckerts. Tom says today they’re just grabbing it to-go, a standard move for the hot chicken eater. Mason says Prince’s has created the hottest chicken he’s sampled thus far: XXXXXhot (yes, that’s 5 X). He says it’s also the best, which is fitting for the iconic creators of the now globally popular dish. His go-to order at Prince’s are the leg quarters — 2 hot and one medium. Sometimes he’ll sub in an extra hot order.

The teen started eating hot chicken in competition with his father, Tom Eckert, who is a corporate chef and partner with Nashville’s Morph Hospitality Group. Born and raised in Naperville, Illinois, Tom developed a love for cooking at an early age. He received his degree in culinary arts from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago, and served as sous chef under Maneet Chauhan at Vermilion in Chicago before becoming executive chef at Café 103, which was nominated for best new restaurant and listed as one of the city’s “21 Best New Restaurants” by Chicago Magazine under his direction. Eventually, Tom moved to Brentwood to work with Maneet Chauhan once again at Morph. “Originally I started eating hot chicken because my Dad always brought home Prince’s Hot Chicken. I wanted to see why he thought it was good. One day I ate mild, I thought it was extremely spicy at the time I got it, but I kept ordering it until I was able to handle it. Once I could handle mild, I competed with my Dad over who could eat hotter chicken,” recalls Mason. How did Mason train to eat such hot chicken? “It’s very simple. It just requires patience. I ate spicy food constantly and I noticed my tolerance improving. I kept eating spicier and spicier food and it worked.”

Mason says his secret to cutting that heat is mostly with drinks. “Pickles, milk and coke help me personally.” Mason’s best advice for someone trying hot chicken for the first time? “It’s about patience. You have to get used to one spice level, then you try to get used to the next.”

Stella Rose Jones

Describes Life Growing Up As A Food Writer’s Daughter

At just 8 years old, Stella Rose Jones has spent more time than most kids and adults dining in restaurants, and has quite discerning tastes. She says her top local restaurants are Red Pony and Sean Brock’s Joyland. Her all-time favorite food is sushi, and preferred snacks at home are prosciutto and plantain chips. Her ideal day of dining includes eel sushi and bubblegum-flavored ice cream from Jeni’s. How does this girl know eel sushi and fine dining restaurants? Stella’s mom, Jackie

That’s when you try a new food that you never had. You can’t say it’s bad if you’ve never tried it!” She also thinks her mom’s job is pretty cool. “It feels good because I get to see new restaurants, try new foods, and meet different people,” smiles Stella. The Buddy System ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Helping Those With Disabilities Live Happy, Productive Lives

68

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

Best Buddies International, founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, has been offering friendship, employment, and leadership development programs for individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) since 1989. The organization has been in Tennessee since 2010, and in May, moved into a beautiful new office space in Brentwood. “Since the pandemic, our team had been working remotely, and we’re excited to be in an office again, thanks to an in-kind partnership with Lockton Companies,” says Best Buddies State Director, Will Macon. “The space, in the Seven Springs development, is stunning and creates instant credibility for our organization. Beyond our dedicated offices, Lockton provides access to internet, storage, printing, and all communal areas, and we’re thrilled about the opportunities this will create.” Hitting the ground running, Lockton and Best Buddies recently co-hosted a retirement party for long-time supporter and Nashville Predator, Pekka Rinne, who chose to spend his last night in Nashville with his friends from Best Buddies. Maggie Spalding, senior vice president of Lockton and Best Buddies advisory board chair, helped facilitate this arrangement. “One of the three pillars of Lockton, along with clients and associates, is our communities,” she says. “Since our inception, Lockton has given back to our communities, not because we have to, but because we want to. Lockton Nashville has been a sponsor for Best Buddies for a number of years including July’s Friendship Ball at Bridgestone Arena. We are excited to welcome them into our space, giving them a place to work, meet, and have amazing events.” Maggie first became involved with the organization 12 years ago when Anneliese Barron helped bring Best

Buddies to Tennessee. “She had a son with Down syndrome and more than anything wanted to know who was going to be there for him and who was going to love him for who he is,” says Will. “When Anneliese shared her goal with me, I was really interested,” says Maggie. “My brother Mike Maguire [who has Down syndrome] had just moved here from California, and there were not great programs for adults with special needs. Anneliese invited me to a cocktail party to learn about Best Buddies and I brought Mike with me. During the party, he kept saying, ‘Sis, I want to do this.’” Sure enough, Maggie became the founding board chair for Best Buddies, and Mike became Best Buddies with Pekka. Twelve years later, when asked to step up again and help the organization rebound from the pandemic, Maggie said yes. “We are recovering strongly and are currently proud to have 112 school chapters across the state, from elementary schools to colleges,” says Will. “Friendship is a lifelong need, and we even have 300-plus one-to-one matches between adults with and without disabilities through our citizens program. We also have a jobs program, where we partner with corporations across the state to find competitive, integrated employment for people with disabilities.” Best Buddies invites everyone to join (or start) a school’s chapter this fall. Attending the Best Buddies Gala is a great way to support its mission of inclusion. This year’s Gala will be held at the Factory at Franklin on Nov. 11, and will include an open bar, dinner, silent and live auctions, special guests from the Nashville Predators, and live music. INTERESTING PETS AROUND TOWN TO FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY

In a world where serotonin is in short supply, online pet videos and content are a lifesaver for many of us. The tenderness and love of these pets and their humans knows no bounds and reminds us that there is still good in the world. Here are two Nashville-based online pets to which to give all virtual love. Searching for an Instagram account that'll put a "hop" in your step? Melissa Hampton never intended to own a bunny, but now she says @billydabunny is "the pet I never knew I needed." She found Billy amid freezing weather in February of 2021, and the pair have been inseparable ever since. At first, she just intended to foster but ended up getting quickly attached to Billy, who has a super fun voice on Instagram living his best life. Rachel Perri owns the adorable @carlthehedgehogclick -- a 3-year-old African Pygmy hedgehog she adopted at 1 month old. "I always knew I wanted a hedgehog. When I was growing up, my brother’s class pet was a hedgehog and we would bring it home for summers and holidays. It was like our family pet. Ever since then I knew I

wanted one of my own," says Rachel. "Carl is very low maintenance and easy to take care of. He’s got a sweet and sassy side. He has a three-story house haha he’s a fancy guy. My husband is a welder/ builder so he made it custom for him. Carl LOVES live worms, chicken, and eggs. His daily staple food is similar to a dry cat food. He loves being outside and running in the grass. They can be very temperamental and solitary animals, so I made it a point to spend time every day with Carl so he would become familiar and comfortable with me. He knows my voice and scent and can find me in a group. You always know his attitude by how his quills look. If they are up in all directions, they are sharp to the touch and he’s upset, but if they are laid down and smooth to pet then he’s a happy boy. He doesn’t like to be woken up, he gets startled at loud noises or abrupt movements. Carl does classroom appearances for our teacher friends and has even done a couple of birthday party appearances. Kids (and parents) love him. He’s got the sweetest face and great personality (for a hedgehog)," says Rachel.

True Kid-Oriented Dentistry McNutt Pediatric Dentistry Team Goes Above And Beyond For Young Patients With a love for both children and dentistry at heart, Timothy McNutt Sr., DDS, opened McNutt Pediatric Dentistry in 1988. One year later, in 1989, Dr. McNutt got a rare opportunity to purchase the Green Hills-located practice of Dan Baccus, DDS. This was a special, once-in-a-lifetime development, given that since 10 years of age, Dr. McNutt had been a patient of Dr. Baccus. "When I was 13, I even told Dr. Baccus, 'I'm going to buy your practice someday,'" he recalls. Friendly, expert care is crucial to soothing young patients, and this dental team consistently receives

topnotch online reviews. The practice now provides services for dental cleaning, orthodontics, special needs dental care, oral surgery, sedation dentistry, sealants and digital X-rays. "Caring for children involves having an understanding of the medical, social and emotional needs of the individual at different periods of their life. Children are not just little adults," Dr. McNutt explains. "In the same reasoning parents choose a pediatrician to care for their child’s medical needs, a parent should consider a pediatric dental specialist to care for the dental needs."

He says he often has adults who jestingly ask him if he can become their dentist, too. While earning an undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and a dental degree at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis, Dr. McNutt received multiple awards, which included the IMHOTEP Society for Outstanding Leadership, the Dean’s Leadership Award, and the American Society of Dentistry for Children Certificate of Merit. He also was president of his dental class, as well as Student Government for the College of Dentistry president. He completed a pediatric dental specialty residency program at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, which has one of the few pediatric programs that also train under the orthodontic department for the treatment of young people with braces. He served as chief resident there, graduating with honors. He also was a fellow at the Chauncey Sparks Center for Developmental & Learning Disorders. Dr. McNutt became a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in 1994. He's also been on staff at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for 20-plus years. In addition to Dr. McNutt speaking with children’s classes and parent groups to help promote good dental health, he's written a book for children to help them prepare for their first dental visit, titled Alley Alligator’s Awesome Smile.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT • Education: Dr. McNutt speaks with more than 25 groups every year. McNutt Pediatric Dentistry also sponsors many school events and fundraisers throughout the year. • The Arts: McNutt Pediatric Dentistry proudly sponsors many of Nashville’s organizations, such as the Nashville Ballet, Olde Worlde Theatre, Centennial Youth Ballet, The Frist Center for Visual Arts, and the Nashville Symphony. • Best Buddies of Tennessee: McNutt Pediatric Dentistry is an official corporate sponsor of Best Buddies, a group

dedicated to inclusive living. For 20 years, Dr. McNutt has given his time and resources to help individuals and organizations that assist those with special needs as these individuals hold a truly special place in his heart. • Interfaith Dental Clinic: For two decades, Dr. McNutt has supported the work of the Interfaith Dental Clinic, a group that helps restore, protect and improve the dental health of uninsured, low-income, employed Middle Tennesseans. • Book’em: To improve literacy, Dr. McNutt has partnered with the Book'em organization to host an annual book drive to provide books to Nashville children who would otherwise be without them. • Church: Dr. McNutt serves as a church elder, at which he and his wife are involved with the young adult and college group. Another of life's pivotal milestones is occurring presently for this Nashville native and graduate of John Overton High School. Dr. McNutt just welcomed his own son, David McNutt, DDS, into the practice, also as a pediatric dentist. David received a master's degree in pharmacology from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from Meharry Medical College, followed by a master's in pediatric dentistry/pedodontics at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. David also received numerous awards in dental school, and was inducted into Omicron Kappa Epsilon, a national dental honor society. David is married and has two children of his own, so says he, too, understands the need for being a patient, compassionate dentist for kids so that youths have and develop positive dental experiences. 615.383.0171 McNuttDentistry.com

Island Time Via Car Ride BUY, RENT OR VISIT A GREAT BEACH PLACE

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

When associate broker Joseph Frady of RE/MAX Paradise in Alabama and Florida made the move 15 years ago to Orange Beach, Alabama, he never looked back. “We have 32 miles of beaches and I’m told they’re some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and for sure in the country.” It's such a popular place, he says, because property values are reasonable compared to the rest of the country, there are endless things to do, and crime is almost nonexistent. “It's just a really nice place to live and own property,” says Joseph. “I live here with my two little boys, 7-year-old William Charles, who goes by Charlie, and 6-year-old Jackson Ward. Other than the usual boating,

80

fishing, taking the kids to the beach, or visiting a water park, some weekends we'll just act like tourists and play putt-putt golf and ride go-karts.” Originally from Marion, Alabama, Joseph came home on college breaks and worked with beach services at Orange Beach. “That's really when I decided I was going to move down here,” he says. “Everyone comes down here to relax and live on ‘island time.’” For people wanting to buy, says Joseph, there are some great homes and condos. “We have everything someone could want down here. We’re the largest county in Alabama and we have so much land. That comes with a lot of opportunities -- buyers can find everything from small homes to multi-million dollar homes.”

It’s also a great place to enjoy in the fall. “The traffic has slowed down a bit, the water is still warm and the weather is cool,” he says. “In October alone, we have Freedom Fest, Bird Fest, Shrimp Fest, Oktober Fest, Arts Fest, German Sausage Fest, along with daily live music and tons of Halloween activities.” When not selling real estate or playing with his kids, Joseph stays busy with locAL, his clothing line. “It’s about loving where you're from,” he says. “My buddy and I wanted to have a clothing line that was started here along the Gulf Coast. People love where they're from and they take pride in it. That's something we believed in, and we obviously love where we live, so it just took off from there.” JosephFrady.com and locAL-Rootz.com

A PERFECT PREMO PARTY FOR REMY

86

PA RT Y P LA N N IN G | EVENT PLANNI NG + S E RVI CE S

TWO INFINITY AND BEYOND REMY PREMO It's all in the details. And there were lightyears of fun details at every turn at Remy Premo's second birthday party with the theme: Two Infinity and Beyond. The son of beloved glam-Boho fashion/lifestyle influencer and Nashville native Hunter Premo and her high-school-sweetheart husband and photographer Cam Premo, Remy's second birthday party was inspired by his love for all things Toy Story. Hunter shared specific details with Brentwood Lifestyle about the planning that went into this special day. The party looked absolutely amazing. What inspired the idea and how did you set about planning it? Did you use a party planner or is that all you? Remy inspired the party with his love of Toy Story (specifically Buzz)! I planned everything, but couldn’t have executed it without the help from my husband, Cameron, and our families. About how many people attended and how do you decide who to invite? We had about 40 adults and 20 kids at the party. I have a pretty big family, and we live in a neighborhood with many friends so it added up quickly. We made sure all of Remy’s favorite people were there, and he felt all the love that day.

How did it feel as a mom to watch Remy enjoy his special day. What were his favorite parts of the party? Two feels like a magical age where Remy’s personality and fun-loving spirit shines more and more each day. He loved his Buzz wings and didn’t take them off during the whole party, playing with his friends in the bounce house and having all of his people in one place. What activities did you have for the kids? For the kids, we had a bounce house from Vlanca House Nashville, Make-Your-Own Forky Station, a giant custom coloring page and a Bullseye horse race. What sorts of food did you serve? We served pizza (from Pizza Planet, of course!), appetizers and Toy Story-themed items, like Mr. Potato head cantaloupes, custom cookies from Sips to Sugars and "Snake In My Boot" gummy worms. Cake details? IveyCake in Brentwood created the amazing Buzz Lightyear cake. We did one layer of strawberry and one layer of funfetti. I sent them a few photos for inspiration, but they really ran with it and made it their own. I especially loved the custom Remy cake topper.

Do you find joy in creating/hosting these sort of events? Or does it stress you? I had a blast planning this one! If it’s a theme I’m excited about, party planning comes easily to me. Toy Story was fun to run with because the movies have so many details you can pull from. How do you keep the adults happy at a child’s bday party? TapTruck Nashville served the most delicious drinks. We had Buzz Light Beer, Pizza Planet IPA, Woody’s Watermelon Marg, Duke Caboom’s Cucumber Fizz and Lightyear Lemonade. And specific vendors you’d like to shout out or mention? Magari Events did a phenomenal job on the balloon installation and cake backdrop. Sips to Sugars created the most detailed and delicious cookies. We also love Alpha Lit Signs for the marquee letters and have used them for almost every major milestone in Remy’s life, even our mid-pandemic drive-by baby shower.

PA RT Y P LA N N IN G | EVENT PLANNI NG + S E RVI CE S

What memories do you have of that you’ll never forget? I’ll never forget his face when he saw the 5 foot Buzz Lightyear cutout with his face on it or singing 'Happy Birthday' to him with with all of our family and friends gathered around us. This was also one of the first bigger parties we’ve hosted at our house and it made my heart happy having so many loved ones together to celebrate in our home. What was your most memorable birthday when you were a child? Honestly, my parents threw most of my parties at the Brentwood Skate Center, and loved every minute of them. It really is just all about being surrounded by the people you love. None of the fancy stuff really matters, but they can be fun to plan. Ente r for a chance to win a geta way to Laguna Beach! Read on for details.

When it comes to prestigious travel hospitality, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is highly regarded by luxury and discerning travel authorities such as Condé Nast, Forbes, and Travel & Leisure for its congenial service, elevated ambiance and reputable guest experience. The upscale, outdoor wellness offerings range from the uniquely designed 9-hole golf course within the canyon setting to the full-time farmer facilitating outstanding local dishes offered on the original homestead of Laguna Beach. With a strong focus on sustainability, the property centers itself on earth-friendly practices such as linecaught seafood from neighboring coves, genuine farm to table ingredients from the Harvest Garden (which guests can tour), recycled glass and composting that return to the sand and dirt on site, and other sustainability measures. When it comes to feasting on the local fare, resident restaurant and bar, Harvest, focuses on organic farming for seasonal breakfast, lunch and dinner options. It boasts beautiful 180-degree views of Aliso Canyon as well as craft cocktails to sip and savor while overlooking the first tee of the golf course. Or, if sand beneath your feet is more your dining style, make the short walk to Aliso beach where you will

find Lost Pier, an elevated eatery serving the likes of warm beignets and coffee in the morning, and ceviche, shrimp rolls and fisherman’s catch fish tacos for lunch. And what would the Laguna Beach culture be without all of the seaside activities? Kayaking, snorkeling and diving, whale and dolphin watching, SUP—you name it, you can experience it. In fact, Laguna Beach is not only the top place in the world to shore dive, but their dolphin community is larger than Florida, Hawaii and the Caribbean combined, thanks to their marine protection program enlisted years ago that attracts marine life to the calm waters and rich kelp to feed on. Take a two-hour guided kayak tour and visit Seal Rock for more sealife observation. Throughout your stay, you of course will want to make your way into town for endless entertainment options of “Laguna flavor.” Visit the community theater, The Laguna Playhouse, where Harrison Ford got his start. Hop on a free trolley and pop from brewpub Laguna Beach Beer Company pouring locally made craft beer, to one of two wine-tasting rooms where McClain Cellars serves award-winning wines from Santa Ynez Valley. Complement your thirst with a variety of cuisines among more than 100 restaurants to choose from. Local favorites include The Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2

for a twist on Hawaiian flavors in a tiki-style venue, Las Brisas for its incredible brunch menu and scenic views of Laguna’s Heisler Park overlooking cliffs that resemble the French Riviera, Broadway by Amar Santana for some of the most elevated cuisine you will find from a multi-Top Chef finalist, along with cocktails crafted seasonally by the restaurant’s mixologist. Lastly, The Cliff Restaurant offers one of the best views in the area with all outdoor eating and delicious tacos. Depending on the time of year you visit, you’ll find a wide selection of live music and festivals. Two notable summer festivals include the Pageant of the Masters where famous paintings come to life…literally on human bodies that pose to look like counterparts in the originals, as well as the Sawdust Art & Craft Festival with a focus on locally made crafts. You’ll also find live music at many of the restaurants around town, including Mozambique and The Cliff Restaurant, perfect places to relax and enjoy after exploring the area’s abundant art galleries. Take advantage of First Thursday’s Art Walk year round, often including live paintings and musicians, dance performances and gorgeous art you won’t find anywhere else. Take the free trolleys from gallery to gallery, and be sure to include the Laguna Art Museum, the second oldest museum in the state of California, specializing in California-themed art and artists. A special component to the Laguna Beach art scene is its foundation on ‘en plein air’ paintings, the outdoor painting style that Monet made famous. Every year the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational attracts painters from around the country to participate in a week’s worth of events, including a two-hour challenge of live painting. In short, Laguna Beach is seven miles of coves and beaches uniquely its own with breathtaking cliffs and recreational canyons and a hippy-loving-self-expression-embracing artist colony that you won’t want to miss in this lifetime.

Book Buddies Program WILLIAMSON COUNTY ANIMAL CENTER PROGRAM GIVES CHILDREN CHANCE TO SHARPEN READING SKILLS WHILE SOCIALIZING CATS

Williamson County Animal Center (WCAC) opened its new shelter in February, giving local community residents and supporters several new ways to engage that weren’t previously possible. In addition to a new community education room, the center’s Book Buddies program aims to benefit both shelter residents and young readers, giving children between 5 and 12 years of age a chance to sharpen their reading skills in a non-judgmental space and to help socialize adoptable cats in their eight free-roaming feline “catios.” Orientation attendance is required to take part in the Book Buddies program. Tours also are available for children who collect and deliver donations. Other day-to-day volunteer opportunities also are available. Williamson County Animal Center is located at 1006 Grigsby Hayes Court in Franklin, near Franklin Christian Academy. The center is typically open to the public Monday through Friday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. 615.790.5590 | AdoptWCAC.org
