An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

Prevail Fitn ess And Rehab HELPING CLIENTS TRIUMPH OVER LIMITATIONS BY PAIRING FITNESS TRAINING AND INJURY REHAB
ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES WILLIAMS
24
G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS
5 Tips From Prevail’s Head Trainer, Sean Larkin 01 // Consistency in all aspects of health is key. 02 // Learn how to be in control and comfortable in uncomfortable situations. 03 // Let your easy days be easy and hard days hard. 04 // Focus on physical capabilities rather than physical aesthetics. The more you can do physically the better you will look and feel. 05 // Enjoy the process and journey just as much as the destination or the goal. Husband and wife duo Derek and Katie Leist opened Prevail Rehab & Fitness last October, alongside friend and head trainer Sean Larkin. Their motivation at Prevail is to blend high-level fitness training and injury rehab. It’s all in the name, explains Katie. “We picked Prevail because by definition it means to be more powerful than opposing forces and to be victorious. As a facility that offers both injury rehab and strength and conditioning programming that can prove to be pretty mentally and physically difficult, it’s a word that fits well and can also be used in multifaceted ways in this industry. For example, you can prevail over past injuries or mental barriers preventing you from finding your joy in fitness. We like to say ‘prevail over limitations’.” The Leists moved to Brentwood from rural Illinois nine years ago and have two daughters, Everly and Lilah. Katie taught fourth grade for years before finding her passion
for fitness, while Derek spent years as a chiropractor following his years racing motocross professionally. Derek says that season of his life taught him the importance of staying fit to compete and thrive. He also loves the problem-solving side of his job and the hands-on approach to injury rehab and prevention -- much like that of a physical therapist. “I like to find the root of an issue a client is experiencing and work to heal and strengthen weak areas to keep old injuries at bay and new injuries from occurring. What’s great about Prevail is that we offer customized personal training to further improve the rehab journey if wanted/ needed after I work with a person. The gym side is a great community of good people ready to work hard. Our group classes focus on power and endurance and challenge you to reach your full potential as an athlete,” says Derek. Regarding essential recommendations to all clients, Derek says to focus on the basic movement patterns: push, pull, hip hinge, squat and press. “Every single workout can be modified to meet a client where they are in their fitness journey. For example, squatting is vital for a mom picking up her toddler. A push press we do with barbells or dumbbells is utilized at home when storing boxes overhead. All parents can relate to the difficult stroller pushes uphill with a double stroller, similar to that of a sled push in the gym. Preparing and strengthening your body to accurately execute those movement patterns will improve your quality of life,” says Derek. JUNE 2 0 2 2

RIDES TO REMEMBER TAKE DREAM CARS FOR SPINS Even as a boy, Cornell Schultz loved cool cars. His dad, also named Cornell, was into drag racing and would take him along to the track. “My father passed away a year ago, but I often think back on our nights at the racetrack and getting the car ready to race,” he says. “At 41, I still remember that vividly.” In 2018, to create these great memories for others, he opened Dream Toy Garage in Franklin and rents out luxury and exotic cars. “People may not be able to buy a Porsche Carrera 911 or a Mercedes G63

AMG, but they can rent one and experience that thrill.” His customers rent the cars, such as the Audi R8 Quattro, for birthdays, anniversaries and fun date nights. “The Bentley Continental GT Convertible has been rented out for wedding after wedding, as has the 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback,” says Cornell. The Porsche and the Corvette are the most requested, though. “The Corvette C8 is out all the time, as is the Porsche,” he says. “They come in, we clean them up, and they go back out.”
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

For many people, buying these types of cars is not realistic, but that doesn’t stop them from dreaming about driving one. “I want to be able to give people access to these dream cars at a reasonable price,” says Cornell. Of course, men are frequent customers, but women, he says, also are high on the list. “They rent them as a surprise for their husbands or boyfriends for birthdays and anniversaries. One woman videotaped her husband getting the car for the weekend. When you see a grown man light up and look like a kid on Christmas morning, that’s incredible.” Cars also are rented out by business professionals who want to make a good impression. For an important meeting coming up or for impressing clients picked up at the airport, the Bentley can be rented. Or, if Realtors
are showing a multi-million dollar property, they can drive prospective buyers around in the Mercedes. Some of Cornell’s cars also have been used in advertising photography shoots. Cars are usually rented out for a day or two, but they are available for much longer, and the rental process is all online. “You go to the website, look at all the vehicles, the pictures and descriptions,” he says. “You then select the vehicle you want, and it takes you to a site where you can make payments. You'll submit your license and insurance information and you fill out a couple of forms and you’re done. When you come in to pick up the vehicle, you’re in the car and gone usually within 10 minutes.” They also can deliver the vehicle directly to clients. Dream Toy Garage has six amazing vehicles from which to choose. Due to demand, they are looking to add a Lamborghini and Ferrari in the near future. For the person who has everything, gift cards are available for holidays, such as Father's Day. Certificates can be purchased online and either printed out or emailed. Military personnel and first responders receive a 5% discount. “We realize the sacrifice they make for everybody is huge,” says Cornell. “We just want to be able to give a little something back to show our appreciation.” Everyone who comes in, he says, is treated like a VIP. This high level of customer service, and his cars, are the reason they have a 5-star rating on Google. Impressive reviews include: “Cornell went above and beyond to ensure that I had the best time in the C8 Corvette.” As a family company and a small business, Cornell is also carrying on his and his father’s love of cars with his own children, 15-year-old Nylen and 8-year-old Leia. “They’re here with me helping out,” he says. As happy and excited as he makes his customers with giving them an opportunity to experience their dreams for at least a little while, he’s also had some bittersweet moments. “A widow came in to rent the Porsche,” he recalls. “Her husband had always loved them and never had the chance to own one. They were having a memorial service for him and as a way to honor his wish, they brought the Porsche to his service. “This is a business, but to be able to see that emotional side of it and know you’re creating memories and experiences like that is truly moving.” To rent one of these exotic cars, go to DreamToyGarage.com. On September 11, 2001, Richard Casper was a high school student, and the events of that day would change the course of his life forever. “It inspired me to go into the Marine Corps, so two weeks after graduation, I was on a bus going to boot camp,” he says. While in the service, he spent time guarding then-President of the United States, George W. Bush. He also went to war. “I was in Fallujah, Iraq, for seven months,” says Richard. During that time, he was badly injured and his buddy, Luke Yepsen, made the ultimate sacrifice. After leaving the Marines, it was hard for Richard to transition back into civilian life. “I couldn’t do a lot because my anxiety and depression were so bad.” It was at this time, while living in Bloomington, Illinois, that he randomly found an art and music program at a community college. He says it’s what ultimately saved his life. “They started teaching me about art and how to use color to symbolize emotions. Being able to express myself without talking about what was wrong with me, and being able to evoke emotion from others who would then understand me, was powerful.” After receiving his associate’s degree, Richard applied to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “Through these classes, my brain was remapping and restructuring all these negative situations into a positive because I was turning them into art pieces.” He then expanded into songwriting. “I still had an issue talking about Luke, and I thought, ‘What if I could write a song so people would know his story?’” Eventually, Richard hooked up with Mark Irwin, who has written songs for Billy Ray Cyrus, Alan Jackson, Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift, and Tim McGraw. “I traveled to Nashville and wrote a song with him within three hours,” he says. “I was blown away.” He wanted to bring these healing tools to other veterans, and along with Linda Tarrson, founded CreatiVets in 2013. “It’s strictly for wounded veterans - someone who’s been to a combat zone and has mental, emotional, moral, or physical injuries from that experience,” says Richard. Today, the nonprofit has helped veterans across 48 states in both its music and art programs. With its four-day music program, vets are paired with mentors and work with accomplished songwriters and music artists backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. Once finished, these songs are recorded at the Rukkus Room and OMNIsound Studios.

“Each veteran thinks they’re alone in their fight, but as they hear each other’s songs, they feel connected,” he says. “They get to heal together.” They also have their photographs taken by Jason Myers, a well-known photographer who donates his time. A majority of veterans with serious mental-health issues become isolated and never seek help. “In order to reach them in their homes, we’ve partnered with Big Machine Records to release our veterans’ songs.” These songs are sung by renowned artists like Vince Gill and Justin Moore. Its three-week art programs are held at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Belmont University, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Tuition, food and housing is completely covered and like regular students, the vets have access to wood working, ceramics and other classes. With the help of the teachers, who are esteemed artists, they create art pieces that reflects something they’ve been through.

Greg Pihs, a Marine from Chapel Hill who served alongside Richard and Luke at one point, knows how valuable these programs are to veterans. He wrote a song with CreatiVets about a situation he could never verbalize, and it helped him to finally process his pain. “For the first time in my life, I had a voice, and that was life-changing for me,” he says. “It greatly helped me over the last three years.” Today, Greg is a mentor in the program as well as a successful businessman. CreatiVets is always in need of volunteers, especially in Nashville, where they have a new facility to hold classes. “We need people who are willing to volunteer and share their artistic skills, whether it be painting, drawing, jewelry making or something else.” Like any nonprofit, it also needs funding. “We have more veterans on our waiting list than we have money coming in,” says Richard. “In order to support them, we need to grow.” To learn more and help support CreatiVets, go to CreatiVets.org.

PORSCHE GM GOES FROM LARGE CROWDS AND GUITARS TO LUXURY CARS
Cody Bender, general manager of Porsche of Nashville, is a familiar, friendly face around Brentwood’s luxury car dealership, but he spent his early adulthood as a successful touring musician before making the shift and settling in and making a home with his family in Music City. Cody grew up in Texas, moving from Midland to Flower Mound, where he found a passion and talent for music after suffering an injury that ended his sports endeavors. At 15 years old, Cody started playing the North Texas bar circuit and Opry houses throughout the DFW area. Even while staying busy playing shows, Cody still managed to get enough credits to graduate high school early. After this 18th birthday in January of 1998, the guitar guy with a dream packed up and headed to Music City to pursue a career. He worked several odd jobs and intended to begin his Nashville stint studying music at Belmont, but after playing with local country bands around town he began heavily touring the nation at age 20, spending six nights a week playing country covers. From there, Cody’s career propelled further forward, playing on stage alongside bigger name Christian and country artists on the road for more than 200 days a year. After Cody married his wife, Jessica, and they had their first child, Milo, Cody decided to make the shift from

onstage performance for thousands to one-on-one customer service and more time at home with his family. A connection from Cody’s touring days introduced him to his new venture, where he started in 2012 selling cars at Audi, owned by Sonic Automotive. In 2017, the musician-turned-car-guru took over the Porsche of Nashville dealership in 2017 and has enjoyed his time there ever since. When making the switch from busy weeks on the road to a more fixed vocation, Cody says he loves his current role because every day is different and he sees different customers every day. Cody says he isn’t much for being in the spotlight, even though he spent years playing for large crowds in arenas. He describes himself as more of a recluse. Now Cody and Jessica have four children, who he says are all performance-oriented, with artistic and athletic interests ranging from hip-hop and lyrical dance to cheerleading. Clearly, the passion for creative arts is in the blood in the Bender family. Cody says he doesn't play much guitar anymore but does use his artistic talents and inspiration for at-home projects, such as building furniture and crafting a movie room for his family. 855.273.2447 PorscheOfNashville.com

C H A S E HOW A HEROIC 12-YEAR-OLD IS TACKLING STAGE 4 CANCER WITH RESILIENCE ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

M UST SE E | HEA LTH + WELLNE S S
“The sarcoma world is small so many of the oncologists know each other and consult. We feel very blessed to have two amazing medical facilities and doctors so close-by who are willing to work together to provide the best possible care plan for Chase.”
Attitude, personal strength and wearing a Chase No. 1 jersey is helping a local preteen remain a champ in the fight for his life. Chase Hartung, a 12-year-old boy from Brentwood, enjoys football, water skiing, video games, baseball -- any sport, really. He's used to playing through a few aches and twinges. It was a different kind of pain, though, that led to him being officially diagnosed with Stage 4 Ewing’s Sarcoma Cancer on Dec. 16, 2021a week before his parents, Justin and Cindy Hartung, welcomed the birth of their fourth child. Ewing sarcoma is a rare cancer occurring in bones or in soft tissue around bones. It's more common in children and teenagers, but it can occur at any age. Doctors indicate it's not clear what causes Ewing sarcoma, however, it requires aggressive treatment plans. The annual incidence of Ewing sarcoma is 2.93 children per 1,000,000, according to statistics from National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc. Approximately 200-250 US children and adolescents are diagnosed with a tumor in the Ewing family of tumors each year. Chase's first round of chemotherapy started on Dec. 17. To date, he's gone through 11 of 14 chemo treatments in an effort to put the cancer in remission. "We knew we were in for a marathon roller coaster ride, but Chase was ready for the fight," says Cindy. Justin says Chase's pain began during last fall while he was playing football for the Brentwood Blaze. "Chase began experiencing hamstring pain, but when he rested for a few days, it began to feel better. We thought maybe he had pulled a muscle." However, over Thanksgiving break, Justin says the pain worsened, spreading to Chase's pelvis and back. Cindy took Chase to their pediatrician, who sent them to an orthopedic doctor at the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee in Franklin. The orthopedist
ordered an MRI, as the bones in one hip didn’t look the same as the other in Chase's X-rays. The family of the Sunset Middle School student was informed on Dec. 6 that Chase had a large mass, the size of a grapefruit, and that the cancer had spread to his lungs and pelvis. It was diagnosed as Stage 4 metastatic cancer. Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt quickly worked to get Chase’s imaging and treatment underway. As of March, Chase had completed six rounds of chemotherapy. Justin says Chase received a combination of four medicines, one that protected his heart and three that fight off the cancer. Cindy says Chase had started homebound schooling in February, and stayed connected to his teacher via Zoom sessions. "When he started getting some of his appetite back, he requested Jeni’s ice cream," she recalls. During March, the family arranged with Cincinnati Children’s medical staffers to see Chase and provide a second opinion. "The sarcoma world is small so many of the oncologists know each other and consult. We feel very blessed to have two amazing medical facilities and doctors so close-by who are willing to work together to provide the best possible care plan for Chase," says Cindy. Also during March, scans revealed that Chase’s cancer was responding to the chemotherapy -- which was wonderful news as he celebrated his 12th birthday on March 26. Chase now has had several blood platelet transfusions. On March 31, a blood drive was held in Chase’s honor at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library. Justin says they thank design-build/development company Al. Neyer, and Karin Sterns for organizing it. AI staffs in Cincinnati, Raleigh and Pittsburgh also organized blood drives. Another blood drive was hosted at Sunset Middle School on May 26. An additional blood

drive was conducted in Chase's name in Ohio on April 26. More than 200 blood donations have been collected in support of Chase. As of presstime, Chase had completed 31 Proton Therapy Radiation treatments. The Hartungs give shoutouts on modern medicine and the scientific researchers behind it all. "Chase’s radiation oncologist shared with us that seven years ago proton therapy radiation wouldn't have been an option," says Cindy. "In short, traditional radiation has entry and exit points through the tumor. Proton Therapy radiation only has an entry point into the body, targets the tumor with no exit point therefore shrinking the radiation field and protecting healthy tissues and organs." Representatives of project Child Life brought Chase what's called “Beads of Courage," which enabled Chase to make a rope of beads that tell the story of his journey with cancer. Each bead represents a medical event he has had to go through. Cindy says Chase’s rope definitely represents courage with some pretty startling numbers so far: • 52 overnight hospital stays • 40 IV infusions • 49 pokes (port access/blood draws/injections/IV starts) • 8 blood/platelet transfusions • 20 tests/scans • 14 isolations/fevers neutropenia "We're so proud of Chase’s attitude and strength through this whole thing," says Justin, who is especially looking forward to this year's Father's Day. Chase's family, friends and neighbors continue to surround him with as many prayers and as much happiness, positivity, love and laughter as possible. The name Jon Pardi brings several things to mind -- an award-winning country music singer, songwriter, producer. But his last name, voiced aloud, evokes one feeling in particular. A good time. This June, thanks to two men who “met” on social media, the Jordan Winery and Vineyard is bringing Sonoma County to Nashville on June 15 in the form of the Jordan Big Bottle Pardi. All proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Middle Tennessee (BGCMT). John Jordan, chief executive officer of Jordan Winery and Vineyard, and founder of the John Jordan Foundation, says he came into Jon Pardi’s orbit purely by coincidence, all because of an Instagram post made while dining at a well-known local steakhouse. “We ordered a bottle of Jordan,” says Jon, “and they’re big on social media. So we tagged them, not knowing anything [about them], and then we got hooked up with management and started working together. They sent me a birthday cake, and me and Summer bought all the wine for our wedding from them. It just turned into this whole partnership.” While they met by circumstance, they didn’t leave the opportunity to collaborate further in the social media sphere. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Jordan Winery and Vineyard, but it also marks the tenth anniversary of the John Jordan Foundation, which has been raising money in the states and globally for years. “We’re looking forward to ‘going big’ with social impact this summer in Nashville,” says John. “It is a privilege

to partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee with its impressive track record of serving the Nashville community.” “What makes the event extra special is that nonprofit partnership and bringing the foundation out into the Nashville market,” says Emma Mrkonic, communications manager at Jordan Winery and Vineyard. “When we were looking at different cities for our fiftieth anniversary, we focused on Denver because that’s where the Jordans are originally from. Then, we looked to other cities where we have connections. Jon Pardi is why we were interested in Nashville. He was all for partnering with us to co-host the Jordan Big Bottle Pardi, and Nashville is the last stop and the cherry on top.” The Thompson Hotel is hosting the rooftop soiree. In addition to exceptional food, wine and music, the evening will feature celebrity guests, including The Big Bottle Squad: Jon Pardi, Jordan Davis, Cam Jordan and Kevin Byard. They will carry in the most significant and rarest wine bottles of the night. “We’ll have different pairing stations with different chefs there, and then big bottles of Jordan, from 3L, 6L, and up to 18L,” says Emma. “The size of a s mall human!” Jordan Vineyard & Winery and John Jordan Foundation have chosen to partner with Boys and Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee to celebrate their anniversaries to raise funds for the clubs. “These once-in-a-lifetime events celebrate the best of Jordan and Nashville,

marrying a love for wine, food, music, sports and entertainment, and, most importantly, community impact,” says Jennifer Wheeler Buhrman of BGCMT. “Funds raised will support BGCMT’s efforts to double youth served, ensuring young people in our community have equal access to opportunities and experiences such as literacy and STEM programming, coding and tech, leadership and workforce development, as well as positive adult role models and healthy snacks.” The event also will feature an auction, and in addition to other lots, the Jordan Winery and Vineyard is offering an exclusive Jordan Wine Country Getaway for six: a two-night stay in the Jordan Chateau suites, a private estate tour and tasting, followed by a complimentary dinner at Hazel Hill at the Montage, as well as a rare library magnum—2009 6-Liter Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon, etched and signed by Maggie Kruse and John Jordan. The Jordan Winery & Pardi Batch Spirits are also offering two backstage passes to see Jon Pardi live in concert on Oct. 1 at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville. Included are two backstage passes, one bottle of Pardi Batch Whiskey signed by Jon Pardi, and a 2005 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon “Super Blend” 50th anniversary etched edition signed by John Jordan. This leads to the bourbon, when the evening will shift to the unveiling of the Pardi Batch Whiskey, a limited-edition collaboration between Pardi Batch Spirits and Jordan Winery, created exclusively for the city of Nashville. “I was talking to my bourbon guys,” says Jon, “and they said they make bourbon out of wine barrels. I was like; we’re cool with Jordan; I bet he would love to partner up. That’s when just being kind of light partners turned into something where it became this venture. It’s cool when two things come together, and it’s all for a great cause, the Boys and Girls Club. You just never know where promoting something -- I was just doing it for fun, like, hey, this is good wine, started chatting around with John Jordan - will turn into a partnership.” What’s next for Jon Pardi? “I’m currently working on my fourth record, out in September,” he says. “It’s due June 15th, and I’m going to Key West to record.” His “Ain’t Always the Cowboy” tour is set to kick off in Irving, Texas, on July 14 and run through Oct. 1, where he’ll close it down at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville.

NEW NASHVILLE SMASH BURGER SPOT

Opening This Summer On Elm Hill Pike, Shane Nasby Focuses On Paying Homage To Grandfather Cledis ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAM ANGEL
Shane Nasby, formerly of Bellevue barbecue destination Honeyfire, is setting up shop this summer in Nashville with a cool new smash burger spot, Cledis — named in honor of his grandfather, Cledis Nolen. Expected to open this summer, Shane and his wife, Angela, say this burger joint will be located in the former Various Artists Brewing space at 1011 Elm Hill Pike. Cledis, born in 1926, grew up in the hills of Kentucky during the Great Depression. Shane recalls childhood in Indiana, but also
spending time at his grandfather’s roadside restaurant, the Midway Cafe. It's here Shane first dipped his toes into the restaurant industry and came to admire Cledis' passion for helping people. Since, Shane has gone on to co-open HoneyFire BBQ and made TV appearances on Food Paradise and Chopped. The Nasbys met nearly two decades ago at church, and have two children, Harper and Nolen (also named in honor of Cledis). The Nasbys both emphasize that the main focus of their new CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2

restaurant is not only to serve excellent burgers in a comfortable setting but also to create a place Cledis would’ve been proud of and felt comfortable visiting himself. Shane describes Cledis as a humble, simple man — "one of the kindest souls you’d ever meet. Cledis lived a life full of compassion and kindness. No one who knew Cledis ever had a bad word to say. So to see his name being honored this way is very special to me." The Nasbys plan to continue their family tradition through Cledis, the restaurant. Each Monday, Cledis will close to feed the hungry in Nashville, and partner will People Loving Nashville to hire employees who graduate PLN’s restoration program, which helps the unhoused get off the streets and back into the workforce. "We want to lower barriers, making it easier for people to transition back into the workforce by providing a safe community for people to be honest about where they are in life, but still be able to have a job," says co-owner Angela. The merch at Cledis also supports the Nasbys cause: Cledis logo hats are available for purchase at Cledis.Store, with proceeds from the sale of each hat providing two meals to feed the hungry. Once open, burger aficionados can expect classic smash burgers and Oklahoma-style smashed onion burgers, plus inventive takes like the "Skippy Thai Yay" -- slathered with Thai peanut butter sauce, bacon and chiles toreados. Sides include fries (which can also be served with roasted chili queso for dipping), sweet potato tots and pickle fries. For dessert: scoopable cheesecake sundaes. The backyard beer garden is slated to be a centerpiece, with live music appearances and collaborative chef burger features. Cledis will be a family-friendly destination with vibes drawing inspiration from the 1980s. To stay up-to-date on Cledis’ opening and snag some drool-worthy sneak peeks of the menu, follow along with Cledis on social media via @cledisburgers.

THE AIRPLANE FOR DOERS Cirrus fits the bill for those who love to explore and seek new luxury experiences on weekends
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSH VAUGHN
When you ask someone from an Aircraft manufacturer how their product stands out from their competition you expect to hear something technical. “Our airplanes are 0.03% more efficient” or “Our plane can climb 2% faster than our competition”. Ask someone at Cirrus Aircraft the same question and you’ll get a much different answer- “Our company is lifestyle and relationship-driven. We like to focus on how our airplanes can change your lifestyle.” Cirrus customers tend to be highly active, driven, and adventurous individuals. Usually business owners who travel to multiple locations throughout the week and love to explore and seek new experience on the weekend. Cirrus sees its airplanes, the SR series or the Cirrus Vision Jet as instruments of their clients' lifestyles. There are 5000 airports throughout the US but only 500 commercial airports. Depending on where you’re traveling there could be a 3 hour car journey waiting for you once you land but in a Cirrus you may have the luxury of landing at a small airport across the street from your destination. Not only does this speed up the process but it also relieves the stress of commercial travel. Cirrus Airplanes are built in Duluth Minnesota but the HQ, delivery and training center is in Knoxville. They also have service and training centers in Dallas,
Scottsdale, and Orlando. When taking delivery of a Cirrus airplane you receive 3 days of hands-on flight training with a Cirrus flight instructor, an added bonus to ensure your ownership experience is as safe as possible. Safety is something Cirrus takes very seriously. Aviation can be unforgiving but all Cirrus airplanes are built with a unique feature- a parachute. No, not one you sit on or have strapped to your back, a parachute for the plane itself. Enter an unrecoverable situation or an emergency and all you have to do is reach over your head and pull on the handle between the two pilots' seats and a rocket fires a parachute from the top of the plane allowing it, and its passengers to float gently down to safety. This system has proven to be highly effective and at the time of this writing has saved more than 200 lives. In fact, Cirrus has an overall safety rating that is twice as good as the average rating in their segment. Cirrus is the only aviation company in the world to have such a feature but they haven’t stopped there- they’ve developed software and avionics systems that make flying incredibly easy. You can fly one of their aircraft using no paper, and no mental math. 39% of Cirrus buyers last year were completely new to aviation so the company does all it can to ensure everyone flying in one of its planes comes home safe.

THE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE. I’ve been around aviation in one form or another my whole life but I’m not a pilot. I was excited to experience the Cirrus SR22T GTS but I thought I should probably get some insight from someone with decades of flying experience who is also new to Cirrus. Bruce Langer is a retired pilot and one of those immediately likable guys who you can tell has a great story to tell. He exudes that calm reassuring competence and confidence that only experienced pilots have. Bruce has been flying airplanes since he was 17 years old and throughout a 29 year career at UPS, nearly 3 years of that time were spent in the air crisscrossing the globe. He’s flown everything from small taildraggers up to the Boeing 747 and lots of planes in between so I was surprised to learn that despite the huge experience gap between the two of us, we both had the same outstanding impression- this airplane feels really safe. Bruce especially liked the non-retractable landing gear “safer that way, one less thing to go wrong”. He actually said it flies just like a 747, just a little smaller. I suspect he was being a little snarky but he emphasized that if someone new to aviation asked him which path to take, “this(SR22T) is the route to go.” Nick Elenz is the sales director for Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. As we walked out onto the flight line towards his red and black SR22T GTS I thought, “what a good looking airplane.” As a photographer I pay special attention to these sorts of things. The airplane's proportions, lines and the overall build just look stunning. There’s an old saying, “if it looks right it flies right” and I was about to find out. The Cirrus SR22T is very easy to get into, even the backseat of the plane (If you’re new to the world of aviation- this is not common). The vertical hinge doors are very similar to new McLaren supercars and leave a huge amount of space to slide into your seat with ease. Once I was comfortably seated I started to admire all the attention to detail in the interior. CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2

With leather stitched doors and control panel the interior looks more like a luxury car than a light aircraft. Once the engine burst to life I was surprised at how quiet the engine and composite prop were, even without the headset it’s not difficult to talk inside the plane. The Cirrus SR22T leaps off the runway thanks to its turbocharged 315 horsepower engine and soars like a dream. Once we rapidly climbed to 5,000ft I took the controls and spent a few minutes banking and slicing around puffy cloud formations. The view provided by the massive side windows is spectacular, the best I’ve ever experienced in a private plane. The controls are reassuringly firm and responsive giving the SR22T a very sporty feel. Speaking of controls, they're quite different from your granddad's taildragger. In the left seat you have a left hand joystick and in the right seat you have a right hand joystick. The absence of a traditional control yoke protruding from the control panel just adds to the feel of spaciousness in the cabin. I completely enjoyed every minute flying the SR22T, the last time I had that much fun flying I was sitting on an ejection seat that was not plush nor did it have stitched leather. Nick took over as we banked back toward BNA for landing. As we lined up with the runway I studied the control screens, everything was there in brilliant, easy to see graphics and it took very little time to grow accustomed to finding the right information. In the very little time I’d spent flying in the SR22T I’d grown very confident in the airplane's capabilities. I never once thought about the parachute stored just over my right shoulder but I think that’s that’s the idea. Build the safest plane in the entire general aviation world so that the only time you have to think about that parachute is when it has just saved your life. The aviation world is full of compromise. Speed at the cost of efficiency or maneuverability at the cost of stability- but for the doers, the fast-paced and adventure-seeking pilots who fly a Cirrus they don’t have to compromise. Imagine the ability to park your car and walk to your airplane, be airborne in a matter of minutes cruising at over 200 mph at 25,000 in your own airplane. This incredible freedom could change everything about your lifestyle, and that is exactly what Cirrus is waiting to do.

Gaining Momentum Right outside of Birmingham is a world-class museum serving as home to more than 1,500 rare and vintage motorcycles. Beckoning riders and enthusiasts from all over the globe to our city, Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum has recently acquired yet another reason it is a must-see – the new Barber Advanced Design Center on the museum’s top floor, offering spectacular views of the on-site motorsports park and the opportunity to get up close and personal with the creative muses of exceptional motorcycle design. An instrumental part of the Barber Museum community since 2019, Brian Case previously co-founded a local motorcycle manufacturer known as Motus before he got a phone call from George Barber’s team and the invitation to “brainstorm ideas with them about the future of the museum.” “Several months into the process, after researching the museum, which is basically a motorcycle mecca, I came up with an idea of how to inspire people — which is our number-one goal,” Brian explained. “So we created the design center component.” Birmingham Lifestyle had the opportunity to learn more about the history of the museum and the design center, and how the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum puts the Magic City on the motorcycle map.
SHARE SOME BACKGROUND ABOUT THE FOUNDER AND WHY HE CHOSE BIRMINGHAM. George Barber is from here — Birmingham is his home. His background was in the dairy business, and when you see Barber’s Dairy in the grocery store, that’s his legacy. Interestingly, he was not a motorcycle rider. He raced cars and loved mechanics, but he was not a motorcycle person

VISIT THE NEW ADVANCED DESIGN CENTER AT BARBER VINTAGE MOTORSPORTS MUSEUM ARTICLE BY DENISE K. JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAY MORRISON

specifically — though he appreciated the art of the motorcycle. When he started collecting, there were no world-class motorcycle museums. He started collecting motorcycles in the early 1990s, and it grew to 400 or 500 during that time period. Then he was asked to do a Guggenheim exhibit on the art of motorcycles in the late 90s, and it was the highest-attended show at the art museum to date. Prior to that, he’d been keeping the collection in a warehouse where the milk trucks were — a nondescript building in downtown Birmingham. Then, he decided to build the museum 20 years ago. He built a huge facility of 230,000 square feet, and it has grown over the years so it’s the largest motorcycle museum in the world.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN CENTER? The BADC is a visceral creative space designed to spark ideas. Mr. Barber was the one who gave me the inspiration to add on to the space he always envisioned. The goal was to create a space that design professionals from around the world would want to come to Birmingham to see. From an interior design perspective, we let the workspace function dictate the form — not an easy task surrounded by glass on all sides. There are five main areas to the design center: a clay modeling platform, a digital lab, a prototyping workshop, a virtual conferencing center and a cozy, mid-century modern lounge.
WHICH WELL-KNOWN MOTORCYCLE DESIGNERS HAVE PROJECTS INSIDE THE DESIGN CENTER OR HAVE VISITED? One recent project completed at the BADC was a design collaboration with renowned ex-Ducati motorcycle designer Pierre Terblanche. The project spanned four months in 2021 and resulted in a futuristic concept motorcycle that was entirely 3D printed at the museum. Pierre traveled to Birmingham from his home in South Africa at
the start of the project. He immersed himself in the history of the collection at the museum, which includes several of his Ducati designs. One of those designs was the basis for inspiration to re-imagine his concept using these new digital tools. The concept will remain on display at the BADC to be used as an education tool. The Barber Museum is one of the main reasons Pierre decided to purchase and maintain a second home in the Birmingham area.
WHAT SHOULD A VISITOR TO THE BADC EXPECT TO SEE AND DO? The new 11,000 square-foot facility is a high-tech workspace for industrial design exploration, located on the top floor of the museum with panoramic views. Inside are computer workstations, 3D scanners and 3D printers that have dramatically streamlined design processes. These tools not only speed up design work, they also allow highly accurate reverse engineering of vintage components. The center is open by appointment only for students and designers from around the world. Public access will be restricted, except for open houses during regularly scheduled events on the race course.

Behind the Scenes With Levi Hummon THE TALENTED SINGER SONGWRITER CREDITS HIS PARENTS FOR HIS STRENGTH AND CREATIVE SUCCESS
ARTICLE BY MYRA MCENTIRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES WILLIAMS
Levi Hummon’s mother, Becca Stevens, is the founder of Thistle Farms, a priest, an author, and an entrepreneur. His father, Marcus Hummon, is one of Nashville’s most prolific Grammy-winning songwriters, having written for The Chicks and Rascal Flatts. But who is Levi Hummon as an artist? With over 145 million streams on Spotify, a dedicated fan base that can sing his lyrics back to him, and wisdom to spare - he’s poised to thrive. “I can say this, the only reason I’m a strong man is because my mom is a strong woman. Growing up with the women of Thistle Farms is the reason I am who I am. My dad had so much of an impact on my creative self. My soul and the reason I’m doing this and why I feel like there’s a platform and I feel like there’s hope is because of my mom. She’s a rock star.” When asked about the weight of expectations, he laughs. “I ignore it. I don’t really feel a weight from my parents, only support. I want to impress my dad, and to show him I’m a legit artist, and I also want to step away from his shadow. Still, my favorite moments are coming home and sitting at the piano, playing him my new music, and hearing his. Now that I’m thirty, those are the moments in music I value the most, my dad playing the banjo and me playing the guitar, just picking and chilling.” Regina Stuve, the vice president and general manager of pfa Entertainment Media and Marketing and close family friend, shares a story. “Levi told me that his dad wakes up every morning and plays the piano starting at 7:00 am. That’s how he started his day as a kid.” “Every single morning growing up,” Levi says. “And know this - my room growing up was in the basement, and the piano is right above … I would hear my dad’s boot just stomping on the ground as he kept the tempo. Now I twitch every time I hear that exact same sound. “I didn’t realize how much of an impact it had, hearing my dad write songs … until I left Nashville. When I picked up a guitar for the first time, I was like, ‘Why am I listening to The Clash, The Ramones, Mumford and Sons, and then I pick up a guitar and it sounds like Rascal Flatts?’ It was always a country song or pop country, and that’s where I laid my roots in songwriting. I was writing songs every single day, sometimes twice.” All this occurred in Florida, where Levi went to art school for two years. He sent his songs back to Nashville. His dad eventually told him he might as well come home but wouldn’t let him drop out of college, so he enrolled at Belmont. After six months, Levi did leave school - because he had a publishing deal and record contract. “I had a lot of work to do when I signed to Big Machine. I realized that I needed to do some artist development for myself. I’d never really played in a show, never really toured. I told the label, ‘I need to do this on my own for a little bit before I can do it with yall.’ It’s an incredible feeling to step

away and decide if you’re gonna believe in yourself. I’ve been able to open for people like Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Lady A, and Martina McBride - some of my favorite artists of all time. I’ve played the Opry now 20-something times. It’s just been an incredible journey so far.” He started releasing songs independently in 2017. “I feel like we’re just getting started. It’s not just the industry that gets to define what you’re going to put out now. Fans are so accessible thanks to things like Tik Tok and Instagram. You can put out songs that are a little different and if they really react, there’s not just an option to say no to them. They drive it.” When asked where he finds his support, Levi says, “My parents are huge, Thistle Farms is an inspiration for me, and the people who’ve been supportive of me from day one, Fletcher Foster, Jimmy Robbins, Eric Arjes, John Ozier, those who’ve really championed my music, Greg Galloway, Regina Stuve - I’m always trying to surround myself with good people, because at the end of the day I want it to feel like family. I always want it to be a relationship. Music is a business, at the same time it’s so personal. My marketing scheme is what do I do every day, and my songs are my heart, so how can you not want to surround yourself with people who are part of your family?”

Referencing his most recent release, “For Me” he says, “It’s for everybody. It’s a love song, but it’s also really about redemption, and it’s a song [that says] it’s okay to be flawed and messed up, and it’s okay to change. The most honest and genuine version of change is not when you change for somebody else, but when you change for yourself. When you find somebody in your life, when you have a mother, when you have a girl, anybody, when they love you so much that you want to change for yourself? They’re doing good work. When I wrote that song, the original idea was that I wanted somebody who loved me for me, and then I thought, actually, I kind of want to love me for me, and then it turned into, I want you to love me so much that I want to change for me.” Levi says that fans can look forward to “a bunch of new music coming out this summer, early fall,” and he has local shows on the horizon. On June 2nd, he’ll play the Ole Smoky Distillery Shine Fest to celebrate National Moonshine Day, and he’s part of the lineup for Nashville’s July 4th “Let Freedom Ring” celebration. \ “So many people are cheering for him,” says Regina Stuve. “I can’t wait to see what he does.” Neither can we.

BUILDING A LUXURY HOME SHOULD BE A LUXURY EXPERIENCE I would classify working with the Legend Homes team, from our initial concept meeting to completion, as my most seamless build. This is my seventh luxury home build experience and my favorite home to date. When dealing with hurdles brought on by the pandemic, the Legend group of professionals were always prepared to shift to ensure my dream home would be to my specifications — quite the feat when dealing with a noted perfectionist like myself who has high standards and discerning taste. Since my first visit to a Legend Parade home years ago, I knew we would work together in the future. I don’t believe there is much that could top this wellthought-out concept of a one-level living home and my great experience with Legend Homes.
