May Women
May 2022 PUBLISHER
Jennifer Downs | jennifer.downs@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community that have left me inspired. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

Fourth Capital Is Developing New Banking Location
Chance To Help Fund Treatments For Blood-Related Cancers
McConnell House Property Purchased By Nonprofit Organization
Fourth Capital representatives unveiled plans for a new branch at 302 Public Square in Franklin’s historic downtown district. The new location marks Fourth Capital’s second in Williamson County, and its fourth in Middle Tennessee. Company spokespeople indicated the new branch will provide both high-touch business banking and personal banking services to Williamson County customers. The location is slated to open to the public in late June or early July of 2022.
Every 180 seconds, someone in America dies of a blood cancer. Local resident Kristen Haire is fundraising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of her father, who passed on from leukemia/lymphoma when she was 17. She says more than 40% of new FDAapproved cancer treatment drugs since 2004 started as blood cancer drugs, and now are being applied in other forms of cancer. To support her cause, visit Pages.lls.org/mwoy/tn/ nash22/KHaire.
Originally known as White’s Tavern & Inn dating back to 1803, the historic McConnell House building was purchased by Heritage Foundation of Williamson County officials. “Our acquisition of the McConnell House ensures that another National Register of Historic Places property in Williamson County will be retained and stewarded for the public good,” states Bari Beasley, president and CEO of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County. One goal is to generate revenues from the property.

Leading Ladies in Williamson County Real Estate FOUR TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS GIVE INSIGHT ON MARKET ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
Nashville ranks sixth on the new list of hottest housing markets of 2022, released by Zillow. Brentwood Lifestyle asked these local realtors about the magical attraction to the Music City, and where the market is heading in 2022.
“Nashville is such a dynamic, mid-size city. So many are drawn to Williamson County due to the highly rated schools, wide-open space and sense of community -all within a short distance to the hustle and bustle of Downtown Music City,” says Erin Krueger, leader of The Erin Krueger Team at Compass. “Those we help relocate say Williamson County is the breath of fresh air they want for their family. No state income tax and relatively low property tax is also a plus, however they comment that friendly people are what they love most.”
Erin Krueger ErinKrueger.com

O PE N H OU SE | PR OFESSIONAL S E RVI CE S
Erin says she and her team specializes in finding needles in haystacks. “With the lack of inventory, we rely on our current database, our vast network of realtor and builder contacts, driving communities and even door-knocking. Last year, we secured many properties off-market for our buyers, avoiding multiple offers,” she says. She predicts the Nashville area will continue to see price increases because of lacking inventory. “We saw more than a 20% increase in appreciation, so we may not see the same growth rate, but we will certainly see steady appreciation with more people relocating to Middle Tennessee,” she asserts. Multiple offices are important factors now with remote working, however, outdoor living spaces are key, Erin says regarding what homebuyers seek. “Covered porches, outdoor kitchens, fire pits/fireplaces, pools and spas are highly sought after and are just as important as livable space. Now with a year waiting list for many pool companies, homes that feature such amenities go for a premium.”
Given all the market indicators, Erin says she still foresees another strong year in real estate. “However, rising interest rates and inflation are still on the radar, so we’ll see how that affects buying power in Williamson and Davidson Counties,” she adds. Erin says with several Brentwood and Franklin communities set to launch this year, her team looks forward to the infusion of additional quality builds from renowned architects from across the country. “Experience and results matter in this market,” reminds Erin. “We’ve sold thousands of homes over the years and over a billion dollars in real estate. Most importantly we’ve helped hundreds of families find homes. Our team hustles hard for our clients, we rely on our vast resources, continued education, technology of our brokerage and each other to provide the best home buying process for our clients. We’re dedicated to working hard and staying market savvy, which allows us to execute the white-glove service that our clients deserve.”

Lisa Culp Taylor
LisaCulpTaylor.com
The Nashville area continues to earn a top spot of places to relocate for a variety of reasons, asserts Realtor Lisa Culp Taylor. “Personally, I think it’s the best place in the world to live! The Middle Tennessee area offers incredible qualify of life, and don’t forget no income tax -- for many, this is an immediate salary increase.” In addition to a specialized marketing formula, Lisa says her team maintains and grows a huge real estate network, including a large number of home builders. “This really gives our clients an advantage when they’re seeking new construction. Many times, we’re able to secure a home before it even hits the market, which has been essential with low inventory.” Lisa says it currently “feels” like 2022 will be similar to 2021. However, lack of inventory is greatly affecting the overall market, she’s quick to add. “Generally, homes are selling for higher prices than last year, which if this trend continues, may ultimately slow our market.” She says homebuyers are desiring more outdoor living space and requests for homes with a pool or space to add one. In addition, with so much work from home (WFH), homebuyers are looking for one to two areas for home offices with privacy and secure doors away from the main living areas to cut down on noise. “Homebuyers also want move-in ready with updated kitchens and bathrooms and prefer neutral interiors,” she adds. The ‘spring market’ has become a thing of the past, Lisa states. “Our listings, under contracts and closings traffic are as active as ever. As supply chain issues and inflation impacts home remodeling and building, there will definitely be an adjustment made as interest rates are predicted to rise.”
“Generally, homes are selling for higher prices than last year, which if this trend continues, may ultimately slow our market.”

She says industry sources continue to share that as many as 80 to 90 people are moving to the area daily. Lisa says the LCT team just launched the Parks’ On-Site Sales Division, which means they now have team members serving as on-site sales representatives for Patterson Company homes. In Old Hickory Crossing in Cane Ridge, Realtor Christy McAfee joined the LCT team to coordinate on-site sales. In Murfreesboro’s Kimbro Woods community, Parks’ Realtors Katherine Nixon and Molly Burns will coordinate marketing and sales of Patterson Company homes there. “Our team is unique, with a diverse group of talent and experience that benefits our clients on many levels. At the heart of it all is our client commitment, professionalism and driving desire to offer the best service possible. It can really make a difference in a stress-free home buying or selling experience,” concludes Lisa. CONTINUED >

“We live here, so we know why Nashville is one of the top relocation cities in the country!” exclaims Paula Hinegardner, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “But, it’s really been interesting learning why clients from California, Illinois and New York chose our city.” She says in addition to the tax-friendly business environment, low property tax and no state income tax, those relocating also choose Nashville because they desire to live in a warm, welcoming community with friendly residents and great schools. Paula says it’s getting more challenging to find homes that “check the boxes” for buyers, due to low inventory. However, she says through networking and great relationships with former clients, she’s always looking for off-market finds. “My non-realtor friends are some of my best resources.” She believes price appreciation will continue through this year. With Nashville’s incredible growth, she adds that homes just can’t be built quickly enough. She predicts a market of multiple offers, and offers significantly over asking price, for the remainder of 2022. “Pools and everything outdoor living top almost all of my buyers’ wish lists,” says Paula. Relocation buyers from certain geographies are used to amazing outdoor entertaining spaces and want to replicate them in Nashville homes, she says. “Buyers from places, like Illinois and New York, are giddy with the thought of our mild temperatures and spending much of the year enjoying indoor/outdoor living!”
In 2022, Paula says she expects a market like never before experienced. “I think we’ll see cash purchases with contingency waivers and even creative offers that include things like complimentary use of beach houses or gifts of hard-to-find luxury items, as agents and buyers look for ways to beat competition for great properties.” Paula shares she’ll be adding an Extraordinary Advantage program by partnering with the team at Stock and Trade, a local design and furnishings company. “Our No. 1 goal has always been to make life easier for our clients, so our business model has always included complimentary, no-cost services like luxury staging, print and social media marketing, pre-list and move-in cleaning, landscaping, painting and handyman repairs,” she says. “By partnering with Stock and Trade, we’ll now be able to offer our buyers and sellers access to complimentary design services and immediate delivery of in-stock furniture for a single room or even a whole house.” Admittedly being a bit nontraditional, the Paula Hinegardner team consists of one agent – Paula – and her “never tired assistant,” Jennifer, plus a crazy talented group of experts in marketing and social media, photography, staging, design, landscaping, contracting and other real estate-related elements. “Our days are exciting, energizing, sometimes long, and even occasionally, a study in organized chaos, but our priority is our clients and we absolutely love what we do,” Paula assures.

“We’re all navigating new waters regarding local real estate, and while it’s not easy with more demand than supply, I’m definitely doing more backend work and applying my network,” says Realtor Gabrielle Dodson, who receives clients mostly from referrals. Gabrielle says part of the attraction of Nashville from those who relocate from New York, New Jersey, California, and even Chicago, rests in the region’s economic advantages, shorter commute times, availability of four seasons and its central location to airports. “Nashville is a hot spot that’s growing, and is still affordable. But one thing that has changed is that in the past when 100 people per day were moving to Nashville, it often consisted of individuals desiring to rent apartments. Now, the needs are for more houses for families and multiple bedrooms,” she says. Going to the extra effort to quickly “stand in” for out-of-town homebuyers when select residences come on the market, Gabrielle says she often spends time serving as a knowledgeable area tour guide to homebuyers during the preparation stage regarding important considerations, such as location, amenities and school districts. “We used to be able to jam 20 houses into one weekend of house hunting. Now, sometimes, we’re lucky to be able to see five. So I work with buyers ahead of time to identify their desirable neighborhoods and will use online tools to show them when homes in those areas become available.” She says renovation needs typically aren’t overwhelming for people who are used to living in older homes, with the comparison of many Brentwood homes

being approximately 20 years old, compared to 80-year-old houses in other states. She says one trend in relocations is those seeking residences in Tennessee, Florida or Texas. “It has become more important to have clean offers, deal with mostly cash transactions, no surprises and to honestly and openly deal with today’s realities. Buyers may lose nine or 10 dream homes before getting one. I encourage everyone to listen to that feeling you get when you walk into houses, and to trust your instincts, regarding what’s ultimately going to be best for you,” she adds.
She says homebuyers often are seeking houses with their own pools, bigger yards and multiple offices. Gabrielle says one of her favorite results is developing symbiotic relationships with her clients, and then sharing referrals that help continue to build their livelihoods. “Nashville is still a great investment. We offer so many positives that people are coming to rather than going from,” she asserts.

MODERN STYLE FOR BRIDESMAIDS BELLA BRIDESMAIDS BRINGS BRIDES’ VISIONS TO LIFE IN NASHVILLE

After a bride says “yes” to her dress, she has the task of getting her bridesmaids fitted and loving the attire they’ll be wearing. Every bride has a vision for her day, complete with all her best friends alongside her wearing dresses that embody the feeling for the wedding day -- formal, country, beach vibes, vintage or a theme unique to the couple.
Melanie Brown, owner of Bella Bridesmaids in Brentwood, shared with Brentwood Lifestyle how she helps brides and bridesmaids have a beautiful, stress-free shopping experiences.
PEOPLE LOVE LEARNING THE STORY BEHIND THE BUSINESS. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN IN THE BRIDAL INDUSTRY? I’ve lived in the Brentwood community for 25 years, so if people come in the shop and think I look familiar, they’ve either met me through volunteer work or from my 17 years serving as a children’s minister at Otter Creek Church in Brentwood. I went from babes to brides! After retiring from ministry, I found I was ready for a new adventure. So when the opportunity presented to buy Bella Bridesmaids, my husband and I knew this would be the next place I'd continue helping people.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN CHURCH MINISTRY THAT CONTRIBUTES TO YOUR SUCCESS AS A SHOP OWNER? There’s so much, but I’d say the greatest skill I learned and transferred is how to be a good listener. Listening drives our customer service and makes for happy brides and bridesmaids. They remember their experiences and share Bella Bridesmaids with the community.
MEL ANIE BROWN

Women, Strong
Families How One Local Mom Persevered Through Tragedy
What started out as a fun day at the community pool on May 21, 2019, ended in tragedy for Brentwood resident Lizz Krummel and her family. At the age of 42, Kurt Krummel, a bigger-than-life husband, dad and coach died. “We were just a regular Brentwood family -- two working parents, two third-grade boys, and three dogs,” says Lizz. “We did yard work, we grocery shopped. You hear about tragedies on TV all the time, and I think everyone's natural reaction is, ‘Oh, that doesn't happen to people like us.’”

Sadly, it did happen to them, but fortunately for Lizz, she had incredible family and community support. They surrounded her and her twin boys, Roger and Cortland, who were only 8 years old at the time, those first few months to help in any way they could, even if it was just quietly sitting by her side. “At first, accepting help was a tough one for me because I'm a pretty independent person,” she says. “But, there are some days where you just need someone to be there with you. I had a lot of friends that just sat with me and patiently waited until I was ready to talk or go to dinner or do whatever. They were just relentless in their care of me and my boys.” Right after the accident, her parents and brothers traveled from Colorado, where Lizz grew up. Her mother, Lynn Lown, stayed on for the entire summer, becoming a pillar of strength for the family. Having been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2017 and enduring two years of chemotherapy, radiation, and a double mastectomy, she understood the challenges life can throw at you. Lynn finished treatment in March of 2019, and her son-in-law died that May. “My husband absolutely adored her,” says Lizz. “He used to love when my mom stayed with us. For three months straight after the accident, she never left our sides. She's just an incredible individual with everything she's been through and survived. She's on a plane at the drop of a hat, anytime I need something or have to travel for work.” Lizz says she and her mom have always been incredibly close -- she was actually born on her mom’s birthday. Even before the accident, Lynn always made sure to visit regularly. She was a high school teacher and would come for long weekends, and now that she's retired, she often spends a month or more with her daughter and grandsons to help out in any way she can. Her father, Gary, also has been there for them. “My dad’s been a real trouper,” she says. “He was there through my mom's illness, and he's all in on whatever the boys and I need.” In addition to being an unexpectedly single mom, Lizz is also a full-time health care executive. “I'm the vice president of human resources for a company based in Franklin,” she says. “Our CEO, and the group that I'm with, not only respect me as a professional, but they also respect me as a parent.”
Adds Lizz, “I'm incredibly lucky in a lot of ways. I've got these two boys who are just amazing. Kurt died a week before their 9th birthdays, and their dad was all things to them. He was their little league baseball coach; he was their basketball coach. He was the head tennis pro at Old Natchez Country Club. He also coached all the kids in our neighborhood. So, it was a huge loss to them and the entire community in terms of the people he impacted.” Her boys play with Showcase Baseball. “A friend of my husband’s, Drew Muirhead, took over coaching the team. [His son plays on the team and is her boy's best friend.] I also volunteer coach on the team, and coached flag football for the first time ever this year. I will never shy away from the opportunity to be involved in my kids' lives. Although it may not be the typical for mom to be out on the football field, the boys seem to be fine with it. We had a ton of fun and I think it is, quite frankly, one of the things that brings us so much joy as a family.” Although there's been a lot of grief during the last three years, Lizz feels grateful. “I have this incredible supportive community, friends who are just incredible people, and a wonderful family. I also have a really great career.” Her advice to others who have also suffered a major loss: “I think if you can refocus and look at all of the things that are left in front of you instead of dwelling on how big your loss is, it helps you to keep going. You might not be OK today, you might not be OK tomorrow, but you will be OK. It’s been three years now -- the boys are off to middle school and love it. Professionally, I'm the happiest I've ever been.” Of course, says Lizz, the loss always will be there, and this time of year, around the anniversary of her husband’s death, is always difficult. “My mom, my grandma, the women in my life helped mold me. You have two choices -- you can fold up your tent and quit or you can keep going. Moving forward is what I’ve tried to do and what I'm going to continue to do. I try to give my very best to my boys, to my family. “I never want them to forget all of the great things their father did and who he was. And if they can live a really normal, happy childhood and life and be successful in all the ways I think they're going to be, then that's what makes it all worth it.”

Iconic Iroquois Steeplechase Rite Of Spring Since 1941 Women Intertwined With Nashville’s Passionate Equestrian Community And Time-Honored Tradition
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALI MILLER
Several loyal ladies have lent vital support to the Iroquois Steeplechase -- an annual event that attracts more than 25,000 spectators to the Equestrian Center at Percy Warner Park in Nashville to watch some of the best horses and riders in the world. The Iroquois Steeplechase is a full day of racing whose organizers state the mission as managing and producing a world-class event that supports Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and other local community nonprofits. The event’s rich history dates back to pasture races in Middle Tennessee during the 1930s, and now fans come from all walks of life. Meet these women who adore their special connections to these large, gentle and beautiful animals, relationships that give them undeniably inspirational solace. These ladies also have special connections with each other, as they’ve crisscrossed life together, often going on the same trail rides or volunteering for the same initiatives.

Sara Jo Gill Daughter of the late steeplechase owner Calvin Houghland, Sara Jo Gill, served as honorary co-chair at the 2010 Iroquois Steeplechase, and again in 2019. She and her husband, Don Gill, ride horses frequently and used to work as trainers at their residence, Bright Hour Farm in Brentwood. Sara Jo’s father was a key part of the event since its inception. His father, Mason Houghland, was one of the founders and was chairman of the race for the first 17 years. Calvin Houghland rode in the first Iroquois in 1941, and won it as a jockey two years later. He captured the event five times as an owner, and chaired the race for 34 years. As the first woman on the Steeplechase Race Committee, she also was a trustee. “I think people love the race for so many reasons. It’s such a magnificent tradition, and it’s known and respected nationally and internationally,” says Sara Jo.

Virginia “Gigi” Lazenby A lifelong dedication to the sport earned Virginia “Gigi” Lazenby, of Nashville, the 2016 honorary co-chair role of the 75th Iroquois Steeplechase. As a horse owner herself, she also serves on the organization’s race committee and has been a board member of the National Steeplechase Association. Gigi’s father worked for Mason Houghland, one of the initial founders of the “Nashville’s rite of spring since 1941,” who became the secretary of the Volunteer State Horsemen’s Foundation. Gigi says she grew up around the Iroquois, as friends with Henry Hooker, who chaired the race committee for 17 years, and George Sloan, an amateur jockey whose father, John, also co-founded the Iroquois. Her brother, David Banks, also was a trainer and former jockey. Her most memorable memory, she says, was when she, as a 16-year-old, was asked by Calvin Houghland to be an outrider at Steeplechase, which meant she had to ride side-saddle. “I borrowed an outfit and helped lead horses to the post on a Thoroughbred that Calvin gave to me. It was such an honor to be invited, and that was my first direct introduction to the event,” she says. Another standout memory involves being an outrider when a horse blew the rail and knocked her off her horse. Gigi’s third favorite memory happened in 2014 when her brother, David, who once was one of the youngest riders at the Iroquois, and she watched one of their horses, Pleasant Woodman, win. “My brother said that was one of the happiest days of his life. He died that December after that race, and I still have the bottle of Iroquois Special Label Jack Daniels won with that race. I will never drink it,” she vows. “I like the horse aspect of Steeplechase, and those who attend enjoy the cheering, the entertainment and being able to get outdoors for one of the first events of each spring. It’s a fun party and a wonderful social gathering,” she adds.

Mary Wade Mary and Alex Wade undoubtedly are counted among Nashville’s Steeplechase royalty. They hosted the 2021 Steeplechase Eve cocktail supper in coordination with The Volunteer State Horsemen’s Foundation. While Mary certainly marked that special 80th running of the event, she’s celebrated most for the past five decades. “I grew up in Belle Meade, sometimes riding bareback on Lynwood/Westview Ave., and my grandfather had a tradition of riding horses on Belle Meade Boulevard,” recalls Mary. Alex’s grandfather was the first clerk of the course, so their families are always mindful about the course’s condition and irrigation needs. Mary’s currently on the race committee. She, Alex and their daughter, DeeDee Wade, enjoy sponsoring the owner/trainer/rider tent for the event. “It’s nice to be so close to the competitors, horses and volunteers, even after the race,” says Mary. “Steeplechase is still Nashville’s signature spring event. We’re all ready to enjoy the beauty of the city at that point, it’s typically held the weekend after the Derby so we’re filled with excitement, and it’s a fun way for the community to come together. It’s great that this equestrian experience is open to everyone,” says Mary, who admits she particularly enjoys wearing Christine Moore Millinery hats to the race. Whether sitting on the hill, being on the infield or gathering in box seats, Mary says there’s a way for anyone to join the festivities. Mary is quick to applaud the wonderful cooperation everyone related to the Steeplechase event has received from the Metro Parks staffers through the years. She says it’s also been a pleasure to meet other race sponsors and to make connections with the Children’s Hospital representatives and doctors. “Because of the special ritual we’ve had in Nashville, I was inspired to attend other Southern steeplechases, from New Jersey to Virginia to South Carolina, and had fun at those as well. But it’s the Iroquois race that gets my heart,” asserts Mary. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2

Marianne Byrd As president of Iroquois Steeplechase since 2017, Marianne Byrd’s only missed the Steeplechase twice since she was 10 years old. And those two absences were due to the births of two of her children. She started as a young spectator then progressed to an outrider on her “cleanest, best-braided pony” escorting racehorses to the starting line, to a patrol and then tower judge who ensures the races are run fairly and where one can “really hear what the jockeys are yelling to each other,” to handing out participation ribbons and to an honorary chair of the event along with her husband, Andrew Byrd. Once tracing the history of the race for its 75th anniversary, she says they realized that their two families together had been involved since its start and the development of the course. “The Steeplechase has been in our family’s fabric from my earliest times and from the grassroots up. My dad was on the stone crew who built the first box seats in 1940,” she says. “When I got asked to be an outrider, that was some proud day in my 12-year-old life.” She recalls the years at which Steeplechase held the Diana Plate for lady riders, before women could compete equally with male riders. Marianne’s father, Albert Menefee, raced at the Steeplechase during the 1940s-1950s. She says the first year he competed, he fell off his horse at the third fence and was trampled by the other steeds. He broke three ribs, knocked out many teeth and cracked his hand, however, he came back two years later and won in 1950. She says she grew up on the family’s Brentwood farm, learning to ride and fox hunt on horseback by having her pony follow closely her father’s horses. “There’s the romance of little girls with their horses, and The Steeplechase represents a unique continuity in my life,” she adds. Marianne has volunteered with the event in so many capacities: auction volunteer, chief placing judge and the race committee, moving from coordinator to treasurer to president. She and Andrew are box holders on the sixth row, seats that hold special meaning because they were inherited from her grandfather. A new offering at this year’s race, Marianne reminds, is the new venue, Royal 615 Lounge, located in centerfield. She says it will be filled with multiple DJ entertainment, craft cocktails and a vibrant vibe. The 81st annual race meet will be held on May 14. For tickets, contests and schedules, visit IroquoisSteepleChase.org. The event has donated more than $10 million to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt since 1981. Tailgating vehicles must be in place by 11 a.m. that day. Opening ceremonies begin at noon, with the first race starting at 1 p.m. There are six races, with approximately 40 minutes between each race. The stick horse race will occur after the second scheduled race. Tailgate winners will be announced at approximately 3:30 p.m. The grand prize will include a topside tailgating spot for Steeplechase as well as other fabulous prizes and giveaways. A parade of hounds is slated for 4:50 p.m. At approximately 5:30 p.m., the races end with the featured race, the Calvin Houghland Iroquois.

MANY PEOPLE MIGHT WONDER WHAT A WELLNESS AND MINDSET COACH DOES. SO, HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DO? Sure, that’s a great place to start! Many people look at their physical health, mindset, work and relationship satisfaction as separate parts of themselves. For example, someone might not be happy with their weight, but they fail to connect that being in a job that is burning them out contributes to significant stress, and the stress leads to unhealthy habits that affect their physical health. My wellness coaching begins by helping a person understand themselves, and then giving them the introspection to see how all the pieces of their lives connect.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS TYPE OF COACHING? My own wellness journey led me here. When I was in college, I started working out, and weight loss was the focus of my exercise. After getting an exercise science degree, I taught fitness classes and then became a YMCA director, but I was still holding onto a mindset focused on external gains, like how I looked or gaining acceptance from others. I then began exploring more personal development and concluded I'd been pursuing my physical fitness for all the wrong reasons. I completely transformed my mindset to see myself as a person capable of learning new habits that could create life-changing outcomes -- more confidence, more energy and more control. With my almost decade of experience in the fitness industry, and equipped with my story and newfound perspective, I knew I wanted to help others uncover who they want to be instead of focusing on a list of things they feel they should be.
WHAT GAINS HAVE YOUR CLIENTS MADE AFTER WELLNESS AND MINDSET COACHING? Each client’s journey might have a different outcome. I see many people in this post-pandemic world seeking my coaching services for greater work satisfaction, while others are moving through relationship or other life transitions that have them questioning what they really want. Then, some people come my way wanting to increase their physical health. Whatever brings them in, clients consistently find that alignment in the situation that brought them to seek coaching, spills onto other areas. For instance, they start expressing they are better parents or partners. They may even begin to embrace beliefs that affect their income growth.
IF SOMEONE WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WORKING WITH YOU, WHAT COULD YOU TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR SERVICES? I love working with our Nashville community, but anyone can access my online services by visiting my website to schedule a complimentary discovery call. I work with most clients through comfortable and convenient virtual sessions, and I’m about to kick off open enrollment for an eight-week transformational program. Using tools like books, assignments, regular guided discussions and Enneagram, my clients move forward on a guided path that opens self-discovery.
DO YOU OFFER ANY GROUP SESSIONS? Yes, I enjoy working with groups and offer several options, like Enneagram parties, speaking engagements and corporate wellness training. With the climate of our job market, employers see that people want to be recognized as more than workers. So, when companies invest in wellness programs, they retain employees who feel better, work happier, and are more productive. KnowWellnessCo.com

PAIGE PARKER’S EASYDRINKING BOURBON Nashville-Based, Female-Owned Happenstance Bourbon Is Approachable, Sleek New Option For Whiskey Aficionados ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAPPENSTANCE WHISKEY
In a world heavily dominated by men, Paige Parker’s Nashville-based Happenstance Whiskey brand offers something a little different. Happenstance’s motto focuses on "celebrating life’s moments that happen by chance," but the intention behind Paige's bourbon is obviously well-planned, with plenty of attention to detail. “We wanted to create a product that pays homage to the tradition of American bourbons that have come before us, but with an unexpected punch of today’s most sought-out flavors,” says Paige. “Although we believe many great moments happen by chance, our premium bourbon is not one of them. At Happenstance, we’re raising a new generation of whiskey lovers who celebrate life’s little moments, so cheers to that!” The sleek bottle design stands out on any restaurant bar shelf or home bar cart, with foil and noir finishes and modern lettering. Paige emphasizes Happenstance’s bottle design as equally as she did the bourbon blend. The Founders Edition straight bourbon whiskey goes down easily, with fused notes of vanilla, hazelnut, toasted oak, toffee and honey. It’s double-distilled, then barrel-aged to perfection. Paige says Happenstance aims to fill a void in the whiskey category — offering something equally approachable for those new to whiskey-drinking alongside seasoned professionals.

Blended and bottled in Nashville, Happenstance Founder’s Edition Bourbon is 90 proof (45 percent ABV) and runs $55 for the 750mL bottle. It’s now available for distribution via Lipman Brothers, and the sleek, eye-catching bottle has been spotted in a few local restaurants and bars, such as Jane’s Hideaway, Bottle Cap and EG&MC. Happenstance is also available for purchase on their website and in select Nashville liquor stores. Paige says her brand is also expanding to additional U.S. markets soon, so cheers to Happenstance as the femaleowned, Nashville brand makes a name for itself nationwide. HappenstanceWhiskey.com

AVA CALHOUN AT SARA ANGLIN STATE FARM ARTICLE BY MYRA MCENTIRE
Sara Anglin knows precisely how she wants to support women in business: giving the next generation a head start. "Insurance can be a very tough career," says Sara, who opened her own State Farm Agency in Nashville a year ago. "I am more than willing to take any young person interested in the business under my wing and show them the ropes, to teach them the benefits, the pros and the cons." Sara found a willing recipient of that knowledge when she hired 14-year-old Ava Calhoun. "I'm there as a resource and happy to help. I make calls, and I ask people if they're interested in getting quotes, whatever Sara needs me to do," says Ava. Ava started helping Sara with events in the summer of 2021 and was hired to work at State Farm officially in October of last year. "It gives me a spark of energy and hope," says Sara, "seeing someone so excited to do everything in life, and Ava's successful at everything she tries." Working for State Farm is only one example of Ava's talent and dynamic nature. She has her own Etsy brand, Made by Ava, specializing in clay earrings. As a content creator, she posts about her jewelry, lifestyle and faith on her YouTube channel. She's also musically gifted. In fourth grade, Ava participated in a school music program in which she wrote a song that she was then chosen

to perform at the Country Music Hall of Fame. The confidence to take the stage comes naturally to her. "I have grown up being on stage. My dad's a musician in a band (Ben Calhoun of Citizen Way). That's not to say I don't still get nervous, but I had a great teacher and family and friends there to support me." Ava's drive to take chances and her will to succeed was irresistible to Sara as an employer. "We're very similar, hard workers, very ambitious. One of the biggest things — why I wanted to be where I am today — is to show my daughter what can be accomplished. You can be a female dominating, wherever. To be able to show someone how it's done is a blessing." Ava is grateful for the mentorship, as well. "Sara is able to tolerate so much in the business realm and then take care of her family. It's very inspiring to see her do that. She's an amazing boss. She definitely inspires me to work hard, to push through a lot because of how much she's able to take on. Really inspiring." VETERINARIAN JOINS PET VILLAGE OF BRENTWOOD TO FORM LASTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH PETS AND THEIR PARENTS
68
P E T CA R E | LOCAL SERV I CE S
VETSTAYPLAY There's a new animal lover at Pet Village of Brentwood who's gladly receiving nose kisses, friendly grunts, licks, paw shakes, feathery flickers and slithering slides. Joanna Walsh, DVM, recently joined the full-service pet group, which provides veterinary care, pet boarding, doggy daycare and grooming. Dr. Walsh was the 2021 recipient of the Young Veterinarian Award, as presented by the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. Award winners were nominated and chosen by an awards committee of their peers. She joins the veterinary team of Julie Anderson, DVM, Pet Village co-owner, veterinary assistant Leah Brawner, LVMT, and numerous veterinary technicians. "I love having a way to serve our community and to form relationships through my career. And, I ultimately love the bond with both the patients and the pet parents," says Dr. Walsh, who treats dogs, cats, exotics and other pets, such as pigs and ducks. At home, she has a dog, Phoebe, and a cat, Violet. She says she soon is going to add a bearded dragon to her family, as she has two young boys who can help care and learn about them. Dr. Walsh says she really enjoys working with exotics. "It's a fun change of pace in your day to see everyone's different pets and
be the person that can help them feel better and build that bond with doctor and clients," she explains. She describes her approach as giving the best medical care, love and attention to pets while communicating their needs and medical information comfortably, and in a warm environment. Veterinary services at Pet Village include wellness exams, preventative care, dentistry, surgery, in-house diagnostics, digital X-rays and ultrasounds. Additionally, they offer an online pharmacy. Dr. Walsh graduated from Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine and interned at BluePearl Pet Hospital in Tampa, Florida. She specifically trained in soft tissue surgery and dentistry. To tour Pet Village's newly renovated building, contact Sara Peeples, co-owner and business manager. Sara and Dr. Walsh met several years ago through the Middle Tennessee Boxer Rescue when Dr. Walsh did veterinary relief work. "We stayed in touch over the last few years, and always knew we wanted to work together again one day, if possible. We started making that dream a reality in early 2021, and have officially combined forces at Pet Village," says Sara.

TAKING CARE OF PATIENTS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER SURGERY
Dr. Lauren Frye, of the Nashville Vascular and Vein Institute in Nashville, not only performs vascular surgery, but also focuses on educating her patients to prevent future issues. “I always had a strong interest in nutrition [she has a master's degree in the field], atherosclerosis and heart disease,” she says. “So, I wanted to utilize those interests when choosing a medical specialty.” Dealing with patients who have atherosclerosis, counseling them for better health and devising fitness goals was a perfect mesh for her educational background and skills. Dr. Frye finds most people are confused when it comes to what causes these blockages, and how to avoid them. “Things that lead to vascular
disease, high blood pressure, and poor glucose control are diets high in saturated fats, cholesterol, sugar and salt,” she says. “All of those things, as well as smoking, lead to plaque buildup in arteries or atherosclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries.” Before and after Dr. Frye does a surgical intervention, she spends time with patients discussing how to best keep arteries open, the best medications to take, optimal blood pressure range, and how to go about making lifestyle changes. “Vascular surgeons are involved with their patients throughout the course of their lives,” she says. “It's not just a one-and-done thing.” She joined Nashville Vascular and Vein Institute last August, and appreciates the benefits a small practice can offer. “We can truly be here for our patients and really spend time with them,” she says. “Every time we get a phone call, we answer it within three rings, and at night, either Dr. [Patrick] Ryan or I receive calls on our cell phones.” Dr. Ryan is the owner of the practice and his wife, Susan, is the assistant manager and pharmacist. The practice provides many in-office treatments for people with artery and vein issues. “We have a vascular procedure center right off of our office where we offer a wide range of procedures, such as stents and balloon angioplasty,” says Dr. Frye. “There’s no hospital stay, which saves money, and in these days of crowded hospitals and COVID, it’s a perfect alternative." They also perform minimally invasive transcarotid arterial revascularization (TCAR) in a hospital setting. Another common procedure is for varicose veins. In addition to being unsightly, she explains, these can cause swelling and tiredness in the legs. After treatment, many people find that their legs are less tired, and they can more easily perform their daily activities. “We operate on every blood vessel in the body, except the heart,” says Dr. Frye. “Our specialty is blood vessels, and you want someone who’s trained in vascular surgery to do your procedure, rather than another type of surgeon.” She gets a lot of personal fulfillment from taking care of people and helping them lead better and more active lives. “It's very satisfying to me that I have that skill. Seeing people getting better and hearing their feedback is so rewarding.” Dr. Frye, along with her husband, Brooks Frye, an attorney in Brentwood, and their toddler Blaise, live in Brentwood. A Ray of Sunshine In Meteorology ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
Wake Up To This Emmy Award-Winning Weather Personality On News Channel 5 Photo by Claire Kopsky
78
T R E N D SE T T E R | ED U CATI ON
Nikki-Dee Ray
Nikki-Dee Ray, the woman who became America's youngest female chief meteorologist in 2011, now is seen weekdays on Middle Tennessee’s top-ranking morning show, News Channel 5 This Morning. Known for her forecasting accuracy, style, personality and faith, she began her career in Lubbock, Texas, and then led a team of meteorologists there. "It was a huge honor so many people gave me that kind of credibility and responsibility at such a young age. It was really gratifying to be seen as more than just blonde hair and blue eyes on TV, but actually as a professional and someone the community could trust, especially in severe weather, which West Texas experiences frequently," NikkiDee recalls. At the time, she says she didn’t think it would inspire others. "That has never really been a goal of mine, but because of how much social media has grown since 2011, more people than I even knew were watching. In the years following, it has always meant so much to me when I hear from a young meteorologist, or even reporter, who emails me to say they took inspiration from me. My focus has always been on serving my community though, and I aspire to be someone they can trust and turn to in need." Weather attracted Nikki-Dee throughout her life, as evidenced by her being a “Kid Caster” at WHNT-TV in Huntsville, Alabama.
"I enjoy working as a meteorologist, but what's most important to me is being a trusted, reliable and active community member," she says. She adds: "I’m no police officer or first responder, but I do believe that being a meteorologist is a job that falls into the 'community servant' field. Growing up, I remember my grandfather Snooks (Leo Ray) was the one in our community who would open up the church as a shelter during severe weather. He always took it upon himself to calm everyone there, and provide for them. I learned a lot from him during those storms, and I try to carry that type of commitment to serving others in my job as a meteorologist, as well as in life." The Tennessee Valley native attended Auburn University and Mississippi State University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in atmospheric sciences. In Texas, she was awarded “Best Local TV Weathercaster” in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, she moved to Richmond, Virginia. She then was named Style Weekly’s “Best Meteorologist” each year between 2016-2019 among other community awards. She has won several Emmys, awards and recognitions. While she says she's always been impassioned about weather, what she's most passionate about is serving her community, educating children on weather, fostering excitement about STEM and advocating for those with special abilities.

"I strive to be accessible and available to our community so I can help make a difference at the end of the day," she adds. Among Nikki-Dee's community activities are guest visits to schools and local groups, such as police teams, farm bureaus, farmers, schools, first responders and nursing homes, as well as special abilities children and adults. She and her husband, David, have two children. NikkiDee and David enjoy catching live country music, trying new restaurants (especially those with great Southern cooking), and getting fresh air by any body of water they can find.
They also authored a children's book together: LauraLeigh Learns About Storms. She says the book is meant to comfort and inform children of all ages. One of Nikki-Dee's online followers, Melanie Lee Stephens, shared this experience regarding the book: "I sat with my daughter in our safe place last week as we were under a tornado warning, and we read your book and talked about what could be happening outside and why we were hanging out in our safe place. What a treasure this beautiful book is! Thank you for sharing it with the world!"

CREATING PERSONAL STYLE WITH BLAIR MOORE ARTICLE BY DAWN BURNS
Blair Moore has loved all things fashion from a young age. The Nashville native studied Fashion Merchandising and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in the fashion capital of the world, New York City. So it was inevitable the mother of three would find herself in a career where she would help other women
find their confidence through their wardrobe. Blair says, “I love helping women find their true personal style and get them organized in their closet so they feel truly empowered to get dressed each day with ease and confidence!” Blair shares four trends for spring and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe.
BRIGHT AND BOLD COLORS This season, bright colors, such as hot pink and kelly green, are trending. I know this can be difficult for my neutral-loving ladies, so I always recommend starting small. Choose a fun, colorful earring or add a bold clutch to brighten up your look. You can also have fun with your shoes by adding a colorful heel or sandal to a dress or denim outfit.
FLORALS
edit Edit down your closet. Ask yourself these three things: Do you still like it? Does it fit with in reason? Is it still in good condition? If the answer is no, it’s time to donate or sell that item. Keep a donation basket in your closet to help you stay on track.
new and old Buy something new, get rid of something old. Each time you buy a new item, get rid
From floral midi dresses to feminine floral blouses, this season is all about flower power. Choose a flowy floral skirt and pair it with your favorite knotted tee and sandals for an effortless look. Tip: If wearing a dress with a large floral print, try adding a denim jacket, light cardigan or woven belt to add texture and break up the print.
T WO-PIECE SETS From casual jogger sets to feminine tiered skirts and puff sleeved tops, two-piece sets are everywhere! What I adore about two-piece sets is that you can wear them multiple ways. Wear it as a set or take the top and pair it with denim, or take the skirt and pair it with a tee and light jacket or blazer. Two pieces, but multiple ways to wear them!
of an item in your closet. This manages the chaos of having too many options in your closet. We only wear about 20% of the items in our closet, so make a list before shopping and shop with intention.
organize When it comes to organization, having a system in place is key. Utilize the entire space for your items. For example, buy clothes bins for out of season or travel items and place them on the top shelf. Utilize the back of the door or any blank walls with hooks for hats or a jewelry organizer. Get rid of items that are taking
90’S-INSPIRED DENIM Let me be clear -- I LOVE a skinny jean and always will! But the 90s denim trend is having a moment and if you want to embrace it, here are a couple of tips: Choose a pair with a highrise and a more relaxed fit through the leg. You want the jean to fall right above the ankle bone. This is slimming and flattering to the eye. Pair with a strappy heel, sneaker or slide.
up space in your closet like shoe boxes, sentimental items, and bulky items like luggage. Store them elsewhere if you can. The two best things you can do to save on space and have an organized closet is to invest in all matching slim velvet hangers. This frees up more space in your closet and looks great, too. And finally, add matching labeled baskets for folded items to keep everything nicely organized and in specific categories. MAY 2 0 2 2

Warming Up To Wellness CALIENTE COOL SPRINGS TARGETS STUBBORN AREAS OF EXTRA WEIGHT NOT REDUCED BY DIET AND EXERCISE
Caliente Contouring may just be the “hottest” cosmetic ticket in town. Owner Claire Dean’s love of health and wellness first attracted her to Caliente Contouring. Claire is a licensed physical therapist (PT) and is certified in dry-needling. She says her extensive 20-year PT experience provides specific technical knowledge to be a highly effective body contour and wellness specialist. Caliente Contouring is a research-based fat reduction and body sculpting service for women and men, targeting those stubborn areas that don't go away with diet and exercise.

Claire Dean, of Caliente Contouring, also has a wellness aspect to her practice and focuses on “Wellness Wednesday’’ through her Instagram page.
When clients consult with her, she says she first focuses on overall wellness. Caliente Contouring uses filiform needles and a heat source to immediately melt fat. The needles are placed just under the skin into the fat and then gently heated for 30-45 seconds. Claire says It feels like your back is to a campfire, very comfortable and soothing. She adds that the results are immediate, loss of girth and inches, yet often the following day a more drastic visual effect is seen and felt. "There is zero downtime and you are encouraged to exercise and hydrate to further take advantage of the boost in metabolism. There is no puckering, no lines and no need to stop living life – the lymphatic system will carry the fat to the liver and your body will excrete it," she says.
Claire says her services can help with many areas, including belly, love handles, chin, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, bra line and arms. Caliente also may assist those already maintaining a diet and exercise program, or those kicking off a wellness program. Claire says Caliente Contouring works best for someone who is already health conscious, exercising and eating nutritious foods, but with problem areas they would like to address. "It is also a great incentive for those who are kicking off a wellness program and healthier lifestyle. Lasting results are related to the client's lifestyle; the better you take care of yourself, the longer it lasts," she says. CalienteContouring.com/cool-springs-tn
