LIFESTYLE LETTER

Home and Design

March 2022 PUBLISHER

Jennifer Downs | jennifer.downs@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR

Home. It's meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

Painted walls are fine, but why not liven them up with prints that will turn them into works of art? Robert Malmberg helps others do just that. A professional photographer for 17 years, Robert started supplying limited-edition prints to interior designers in 2012. “I was getting requests from more and more interior designers because photographs are very versatile,” he says. He says his studio in Brooklyn, New York, was thriving. In addition to working with designers, he was doing commercial work and had a video production studio. Then COVID-19 hit, and he had to close his doors. “I was still paying rent, and after six months, I asked myself, ‘What's another thing I could offer to the design trade specifically?’ And I thought, ‘Well, what about wallpaper?’” This concept already had been in the back of his mind for a couple of years, he recalls, but he never had time to pursue it. Now, he had plenty of it. “With no end in sight, I decided to take the year and really develop a wallpaper collection,” says Robert. The wallpaper line launched in March 2021 and he says the response has been amazing. “Every month I'm getting three or four new orders from designers that are well known and established in the industry," he adds. His wallpaper also has been featured in Architectural Digest, Forbes and The Washington Post.

Very meticulous about quality and printmaking, he works only with the highest-quality paper on which to render his photographs. “Using photography as a medium for the design process really makes it one-of-a-kind,” he says. “Each one is a unique collage with different subject matters woven together to make these patterns. It's a mash-up of still life, landscape and mixed media, and the repeats are a little bit larger than most wallpaper, so they're all completely different.” Instead of having blank walls, Robert says people are seeking something bolder and fun. “We're in a different culture now and we're spending way more time at home. We don’t want to just be around a bunch of beige walls all day. My wallpaper adds so much interest and detail and really finishes a room.” One of his most popular prints include his Rorschach Butterflies. “You’re getting a sense of flight, and I've done a couple master bedrooms where it's on the ceiling and it just looks so cool,” he says. Another popular and fun print is Sunken Garden. “That was shot in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is comprised of probably 90 or so still-life images of flowers and insects,” says Robert. “But, there are hidden things in there, so if you look closely, you’ll see a flamingo, mating butterflies and a lizard.” He’s also currently working on an African mask wallpaper print. “These are handcrafted masks that were on loan from a museum,” he says. “I photographed about 50 of them and those will be made into a pattern. I'm really excited about it.” And Robert is not stopping at wallpaper. “I’m expanding into textiles this year, so designs that you see on my site can also be made into fabric.”

ORGANIZED SPACES FOR SIMPLIFIED LIFE PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZING COMPANY HELPS PEOPLE CREATE AND RECLAIM SPACES FOR MORE EFFORTLESS LIVING

44

H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN

Digging through cabinets and drawers. Sifting through cluttered pantries. Rebuying items not found only to locate them later. Human possessions have a way of getting cluttered in people's physical spaces, causing mental clutter that takes time and energy from happiness. Luckily, there are ways to sort out those developments and turn them into more functional spaces. Brentwood Lifestyle asked Kemble Land,

owner of Simply Contained Nashville, about how her detail-oriented, Brentwood-based organizational company helps others create peace with their possessions. HOW DID YOU GET INTO PROFESSIONAL HOME ORGANIZATION? "After spending over a decade working as an executive assistant for top executives at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, and at a Record Label in Nashville, I decided that when my longtime boss retired, I’d make a career switch. I thought about getting back into museum studies, but I chose instead to trade organizing people’s work and travel schedules for organizing their homes." HOW DO YOU DECIDE THE BEST WAY TO SERVE A CLIENT'S HOME ORGANIZING NEEDS? "I think it’s so important that if I’m entering someone’s most intimate space, their home, I take the time to get to know them. Clients and I will talk about what their day looks like, what the traffic patterns of their homes are, and where their problem areas are. Organizing isn’t about pretty containers, although if pretty is what they want, we’ll make it happen. Instead, it’s about finding solutions that fit their needs and lifestyle — what works with their priorities. We love finding realistic, functional, and appropriate solutions that match our clients’ personalities."

KEMBLE L AND

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? "I love it all, but two parts of my job make me come alive as a professional organizer. I’ve always been a puzzle lover, and I enjoy the challenge of problem-solving. I enter each job like working on a puzzle, figuring out how to put the organization pieces together for a beautiful and purposeful result. I admit I lay awake sometimes thinking about the best solutions for a project. Another part of my work that fulfills me is the big reveal day. Seeing someone’s mouth drop and then watching a wide smile and a sigh of relief come over them is priceless. When I see my clients’ reactions, it affirms that my business is adding value to people’s lives, and that makes me feel good."

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? "We're a full-service professional organization company offering a variety of services. Some clients contact us because they want to set up a new home correctly from the start. Others would like to reclaim or repurpose a home space. We organize small areas like pantries, linen closets, and larger spaces like offices, hobby rooms, and whole houses. Organizing those small home areas can make a big impact in our clients’ daily lives and often motivate them to tackle the bigger projects they have. We also help people declutter and release items that no longer hold value and donate those items that might serve another with our complimentary donation drop-off services." WHAT WOULD YOU WANT THOSE THINKING ABOUT ORGANIZING THEIR HOME TO KNOW ABOUT SIMPLY CONTAINED? "I would love for them to know I feel so grateful to do work I love. There is no judgment or job that surprises us. We’ve seen it all, and we’re also here for it all. Then, when the job is done, we’ll ensure our client feels educated and confident to maintain their organization. If a client needs us again, we’re just a call or an email away. It’s our goal to help people create welcoming spaces that help them live and breathe easier." Simply Contained is a member of the National Association of Productivity & Organizing Professionals. Services include home organization, new home setup, maintenance organization, reclaiming spaces and holiday décor removal and storage. Requests for consultations can be submitted online. Mortgage Loans LOCAL TEAM DEDICATES THEMSELVES TO HELPING CUSTOMERS BECOME HOMEOWNERS

It’s no secret the Nashville real estate market has been on fire for quite some time. And for the sake of this analogy, the COVID-19 pandemic was the gasoline. Being the ‘it city’ certainly created a few challenges for many industries, with the mortgage loan industry being no exception to that rule. But luckily for Mark Rood, his love for people and his commitment to providing the best service to all of his clients, remain his focus, he proclaims, as the branch manager of Loan Depot in Franklin.

ARTICLE BY SHELBY MCLEOD

With a booming housing market making the competition to win a housing bid even more fierce, Mark says he and his team get strategic on every front of the mortgage lending process. Understandably, buyers entering into the loan approval process can be very frustrated with the current challenges, but he says the Loan Depot team works to make the process as seamless as possible. “We echo what the realtors are telling them, but we also take it a step further. We ask how we can position the offer, and we’ll also provide a letter showing our commitment to lend. At the end of the day, we want our clients to win,” he adds. Mark says the biggest challenge is efficiency. "We want to offer every single person the same level of service, and we certainly want to make sure we get back to all inquiries.” Given the nature of the job, Mark says he's constantly expanding his sphere and meeting new realtors. One way he’s able to combine work and play

is with the game of golf. He says he tries to work in a meeting once a week on the golf course at The Governor’s Club. Originally from Florida, Mark admits he has no problem calling Tennessee home, after moving to Nashville in 2010. Aside from the recent Tennessee Titans heartbreak, Mark reveals he's a huge football fan who loves professional sports in general. “Nashville is admirable and has so much to offer. I didn’t grow up with hockey, but I’m super into the NHL Predators now. The whole reason I got into the mortgage industry is because I wanted to work with the Nashville community,” he adds. Mark and his team indicate they are committed to helping their customers navigate the sometimes overwhelming experience of becoming a homeowner; their attention to detail and dedicated customer service are bound to keep their clients happy. www.RoodLendingTeam.com

Vitality Senior Living ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRADITIONS AT MILL CREEK

This Brentwood Community Specializes In Lively Independent Living, Assisted Living And Memory Care

M UST SE E | HOM E SERVI CE S

Being truly 'at home in a senior center' to many people means leading an independent, active lifestyle. That's exactly what the staff at Traditions at Mill Creek say they strive to deliver at the Brentwood-based community they've created at 6922 Nolensville Road for more than 150 older adults. "Choosing the right senior living community can be confusing, but we're here to help with all the considerations related to this important decision. We're here to meet you where you are in your journey, whether you are looking for retirement living or assisted living," says Chris Guay, founder/CEO of Vitality Living in 2016 and owner/ partner of Traditions at Mill Creek. Chris, who also lives in Brentwood within 5 miles of Traditions, says they even have a 4-6 minute survey to help families discover the perfect residential fit for loved ones. Positioned between Burkitt and Pettus Drives, Traditions is located on Nolensville Road, near the Publix Super Center on the corner of 41A and Concord Road. Traditions' residents experience and enjoy Tennessee’s local culture, such as trips to popular restaurants, baseball games, nature's beauty in parks, local musical entertainment, yoga studios or plays at the theatre. "We create vibrant living for residents to live purposefully and experience a deep sense of belonging," says Chris. After working for some of the largest American providers of senior care, Chris says he wanted to shift perceptions of senior living to ensure it can be vibrant at any age, embraces individuality, and inspires people to be challenged by leaning out of the status quo. "I was blessed to have personally known all of my grandparents and three of my great-grandmothers, so I've always had affection toward older adults. From a firsthand perspective, I appreciate how important it is to older adults

to continue experiencing life in creative ways and how essential it is to focus on the right things," he says. "From my personal life, I realized my calling was working in this part of the senior industry." From opening in 2019, the facility's floor plans include studio, room and balcony options, including one or two bedrooms, with amenities coordinated for independent living, memory care or assisted living. Additional gathering spaces include entertainment common area, kitchen area and meeting spots, both indoor and outdoor. Traditions' staffers welcome small pets to those residing in independent living. Realizing that no one wakes up one day and declares that they can't wait to live in assisted living, Chris says he often fields questions about how to approach family transitions for senior members and how to start the process. "When people start to forget things is typically time to start conversations. I encourage others to not wait until it's too late to gather information, so they can help their relatives to know what their considerations are and what all options are out there for them," he adds. "It's hard to give up independence, but making decisions before those decisions are needed leads to much better outcomes," he says. He says taking small steps, such as dealing with power of attorney arrangements, preparing finances, and knowing what is intended with household items, helps temper "the emotion of change." "Our team is made of seasoned retirement living professionals who are passionate about creating vibrant communities for older adults, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges," Chris says. "Our goals are to eliminate labels that reinforce stereotypes of aging, to empower choice, and to create environments where all residents succeed."

It was only a year ago that Jessica Zweig visited Nashville and fell fast in love. Now she has a new office space, the second abode to her multi seven-figure branding company, SimplyBe. Agency, which she founded in 2016 in her hometown of Chicago. Her new Nashville home is an enchanting white farmhouse, built in the 1800s, situated on 10 luxuriously historic acres that she and her husband are renting in Bellevue. She smells of rose with a hint of vanilla. Her energy lands like spring. Despite being a bestselling author, self-made millionaire, and one of the most Googled female entrepreneurs of the moment, Jessica almost certainly makes every person who crosses her path feel worthy and significant. Though it’s impossible to imagine, with her feline green eyes, kittenish style and celestial presence, she swears that, growing up, she was gawky and had a face full of acne. “I was insecure and all I wanted was to be accepted and cool. In the early days, before I became the woman I am now, it was my ultimate mission to find out how to be that,” Jessica says. In the years after earning her bachelors of fine arts degree in acting from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, she and a friend, both young enthusiasts of the Chicago fashion, food and nightlife scenes, founded an online lifestyle magazine, Cheeky Chicago, in 2008. Almost instantaneously, its fun-loving, witty combination of cosmopolitan flair and real talk spunk caught fire, especially amongst her 20-something counterparts. Which meant that gawky, uncool Jessica needed to step aside. A new and improved “It” girl persona would be running the show from now on. Before long, she found herself bumping elbows with celebrities and high rollers. Posing for photo ops at swanky social gatherings. Strolling through velvet ropes and V.I.P sections. Publishing viral blog posts with the same ease that most would write a simple grocery list. It was as though everything she touched swiftly turned to gold. She’d become the envy of her formerly awkward self. Or, had she? “For a while, the success of Cheeky validated me. It was exciting, and it gave me a sense of falsified ego. Because I’d never been cool. But, the truth is that, behind the scenes, my life turned into a mess,” Jessica says. Where there was no wifi connection and no cameras flashing, there was loneliness. Despite the magazine’s loyal following, she was financially broke, emotionally broken and physically exhausted. Though she was living in the city that had raised her, she felt a thousand miles away from home. Eventually, she and her business partner weren’t speaking. They were also smothering under mountains of debt. The facade was getting harder to uphold. How, she wondered, would she ever turn her light back on? It was in the summer of 2013. Her body was shutting down. Every time she caught a cold, a simple sniffle and a sore throat would spiral into a severe sinus infection and a migraine headache. While her stubborn will was hellbent on blazing forward, her body was throwing up stop signs.

62

LOCA L’S CH OICE | STY L E + BE AUTY

At 32 years old, after many months of medical exams and prescriptions, she was forced to undergo an intensive sinus surgery. This meant she was to spend six to eight weeks staring at her apartment walls, swathed in piles of blankets, resting in a chokehold of anxiety and frustration. Desperate to reconnect with the world, one day she decided to throw on some clothes and venture across the street to a park to breathe fresh air. She positioned herself onto a grassy knoll, Indianstyle, taking in the balmy, cloudless June afternoon. Also fairly convinced that she was one thought away from a nervous breakdown. Maybe, she thought, she’d try meditating. “I’d never meditated in my life. I didn’t even know how,” she says, laughing. “But, I shut my eyes and turned my palms toward the sky. After a few minutes, I heard a voice--my voice, except it was much more sovereign and calm, say to me, ‘It’s okay. You’re allowed to rest. Just Be.’” She’d been hustling so hard to uphold the public persona she’d created--the one that was far more glamorous and charismatic than the Jessica she’d managed to run away from. But she couldn’t run anymore. “I’d been telling myself, ‘I have to keep feeding this machine. I have to get back to work. This is my entire identity,’” Jessica says.

63

Except, that day, pressed against the grass, alone, she realized it wasn’t. Breaking her meditation, she opened her eyes and found herself staring directly at a tattoo on her wrist. It was one she’d gotten eight years earlier, but it suddenly had new depth and life and nuance, or, perhaps, had finally revealed its supernatural meaning. In her own handwriting, it read, “SimplyBe.” It was as though 26 year-old Jessica had blasted out a memo of love and light into the ether–one that, though always visible to the eye, had been waiting for the most auspicious moment to meet the gaze of her future self, and in a strangely divine way, reveal the fullness of its message. “I saw the tattoo and understood its meaning for the first time. And, instantly, I knew that whatever I did next, it would be called ‘SimplyBe.’” There in the park, a seed was planted. And, a little more than two years later, Jessica founded her branding agency, SimplyBe, which blossomed into a garden of top tier clients, profits and accolades. Although, this time, it’s never been about notoriety. It’s about impact. “I needed to go through the fire and feel the burn of my mistakes in order to learn how to serve. I needed to live inauthentically so that I could grasp the power of authenticity. That’s the only way I could stand in authority and teach it to others,” Jessica says. In other words, she had to fumble in her relationship with money in order to learn the language of abundance. She had to chase all of the seductive things that proved to be fleeting and soul-sucking in order to discover what truly lit her up and motioned her down a pathway of contribution. She had to date all of the wrong guys who loved her in all of the wrong ways in order to learn the right ways to love herself. And Be loved. While it ended in a way that she was desperate to be freed from, Jessica wishes to be clear about something: “The truth is that my experience with Cheeky wasn’t all ego and celebrity-chasing. It was a meaningful time because it helped me find my talent and sense of volition. It was my first journey into entrepreneurship, and it forced me into a direction that led to the life I’m living today,” she says Today, SimplyBe. Agency employs 24 ambitious creatives, three of whom are in the new Nashville office, which opened in January. Last February, she released her first book, Be.: A No Bullsh*t Guide to Increasing Your Self Worth and Net Worth by Simply Being Yourself, which quickly landed at the No. 1 spot on the Amazon chart in the Women in Business New Releases category. Her podcast, SimplyBe. Podcast, is wildly successful, with featured guests like Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell, artist, writer and Instagram sensation Morgan Harper Nichols, and fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff. She confesses that many people, at least initially, misunderstand what she does, however.

“SimplyBe. Agency is a personal branding company, yes. But, really, we’re a personal empowerment company. For example, people come into our offices and they’re like, ‘I want the logo. I want the website. I want the big following.’ And, sure, we do all of those things and more; we’re brilliant at them. But, most of all, we teach people how to be authentic, magnetic and in service to others.” So, then, what is the art of SimplyBe.ing? “To SimplyBe. is to own who you are, because that’s what makes you magical. It’s embracing your evolution. It’s understanding that you’re here to teach what you’re here to learn. And, mostly, it’s believing that, no matter what, you’ve got you and the Universe has got you,” she says. Jessica says she feels that her divine assignment is to help others wake up to their truth–the one that can only be found within. “I put myself out there in the world in a big, bright and shiny way because I understand that I have a finite amount of time to do my job, which I believe is to show others that every single person on this earth has the ability to make a profound impact. It doesn’t matter if you’re a barista or a bus driver or a CEO. Don’t take for granted your own power,” she says. She then adds, “And always remember that anytime someone throws sludge at you when you show up as your authentic self, it’s because they don’t know their own light. It’s not that they’re mad at your light; it’s that they’re unconscious of their own,” she says. Essentially, Jessica’s work is about inviting people to come back to themselves. It’s about moving away from the noise and letting yourself remember. So, how then, does Jessica come back home to herself? “My true medicine is solitude. I love taking baths. I love to turn on a beautiful piece of music, connect with Spirit and draw. I love storytelling through art. Truly, as much as I have to be ‘on’ and in front of an audience, I restore my energy reserves through alone time,” she says. And, most significantly, she loves burrowing inside the gentle pulse of her newfound respite. One ripe with Tennessee history, scenic charm, and peaceful landscape. When she visited Nashville last August for her book launch party, after having fallen in love with the property through a screen, it exceeded her expectations. Tucked in its woods, there’s an old graveyard and horse stables. She calls it her “magical place.” “The vibration of Chicago is high energy and kinetic, which is wonderful in its own way, but after my husband and I packed up our lives and our two dogs and decided to make ourselves at home here, surrounded by the vibration of creativity and nature, I found restoration. It’s teaching me how to have an even deeper relationship with myself,” Jessica says. Her most treasured corner of the sprawling estate? The front porch. “I get up every morning, pour myself a cup of coffee, step outside and listen to the birds chirp. I take in the sky and the air and the silence. And it’s just me, spending time with me. And that’s how I access the source of my own power. Me, just simply being.”

Stunning Stoves LA CORNUE RANGES CELEBRATE ALL THAT'S GLORIOUS FRANCE AND FRENCH CULINARY TRADITION

66

T R E N D SE T T E R | HOM E + DE S I GN

French ranges are timeless pieces of luxury that add elegance to any kitchen. La Cornue ranges often are associated with professional quality “chef’s ranges.” Their designs are reminiscent of vintage stoves from old European homes, and are the epitome of form and function.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THESE EXTRAORDINARY STOVES ARE: • La Cornue was founded in Paris in 1908 as artisan gourmand Albert Dupuy created an improved gas oven for homes. Paris was being lit by gas street lamps, and he applied that “new” technology to control the gas flow inside an oven. • La Cornue was shorthand for the valve that controlled gas flow. • Each La Cornue range is hand-built, custom-to-order, in an atelier 40 minutes northwest of Paris. • Clients choose size, porcelain enamel finish, metal trim, cooktop configuration and design a one-of-a-kind couture creation. • Each range has a custom engraved identification plate showing the one for whom it's made.

• Today, U.S. purchasers are the biggest La Cornue customer, even though the product was only introduced here in the 1990s. • In Europe, homeowners often take their appliances with them when they move, which explains why a La Cornue is built to be passed down for generations. • Ranges are made of cast iron, steel, brass porcelain; no plastics or digital features. • Ranges have one gas oven and one electric oven, ensuring the best proper heat. • Gas is a moist, lively heat best for roasting meats and poultries, while electric is a dry, stable heat best for baking. • The CornuFé series was born in 2015 to create a more modest La Cornue, and is manufactured in preset colors and trims. Julia Child owned a La Cornue, and designed most of her recipes on it; today, her range is installed in Patricia Wells’ cooking school in Provence, still inspiring young chefs the world over.

Spruce Up For Spring

MAKE HOME OR BUSINESS SHINE THIS SEASON ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Before

Spring is a time of renewal and cleanliness, so why not bring these same qualities to your home and business? Here are some local, experienced companies that can help you do just that.

CertaPro Painters CertaPro of Nashville and Middle Tennessee has been beautifying homes and businesses inside and out for the past 27 years. Whatever a customer desires, it has the people and materials to get it done right. “It’s our goal to approach each customer’s project individually - customizing the experience, colors, paint types, and what’s most important to them,” says Dylan Ritter, who owns the company along with his wife, Scout Turner. CertaPro has many repeat customers, and many of its new ones are referred. “We put a heavy focus on customer service, and provide top quality professional painting services for residential, commercial, interior, and exterior projects,” he says. They also offer carpentry services, residential garage floor / commercial coatings, cabinet refinishing, and more. It’s important, explains Dylan, to stay on top of surfaces that require care and maintenance. “The longer a surface or area is neglected, the more time and effort it takes to address a potential issue. We are prepared to offer services for structures that haven’t been painted in decades as well as structures that receive regular maintenance.” To find out more about CertaPro of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, go to CertaPro.com/NashvilleSouth.

Undersun Roofing, LLC Undersun Roofing, LLC, founded in 2020, is a proud female- and veteran-owned small business. Adam Sanderson, a Marine who was awarded a Purple Heart, and co-owner, Jaime Kemp, are Nashville natives. They, along with dog Fletcher, aka the Pit Boss, ensure only the best in service. “Our goals in forming Undersun Roofing were to provide an unmatched level of customer service, top quality workmanship with attention to details, and an environment where our installation crews are recognized for their skills and work ethics,” says Jaime. In addition to providing full roofing system replacements, repairs, and gutter installation, Undersun offers free roof inspections and insurance consultations. “We work with property owners to decide the best solution for their needs and budgets,” she says. “We’re happy to help walk them through the insurance claim filing process if storm damage has caused the need for roof repair or replacement.” Spring provides the ideal weather for roofing, explains Jaime. “With spring storms and high amounts of rain come more opportunities for leaks. Many times homeowners aren’t aware of active leaks until the water has made its way through the attic and causes water spots on the ceiling.” To make an appointment, go to UndersunRoofing.com.

Blue Shield Power Washing Blue Shield Power Washing of Franklin, in business for 17 years, makes homes and businesses look clean and fresh once again. Whether it’s exterior siding, a roof, driveway, windows, or a deck, its soft power washing specialists can remove dirt, algae, rust, and other environmental stains in a gentle yet effective manner. It’s important to clean surfaces on a regular basis. “Because of the extremes in temperature, organics such as moss and algae will grow on most surfaces,” says owner Michael Lattero. “These can create cracks and slippery spots which can be dangerous. You also want to avoid mold since you’ll be breathing that in as well. So, removing these buildups not only improves curb appeal, it also protects your home and provides a level of safety.” Many people think some surfaces are too far gone or dirty to ever look nice again, but that’s not the case. “When customers see the finished products, they’re often amazed with how great they look,” he says. “People love light, bright and clean homes and businesses, and that’s what we provide.” To find out more about Blue Shield Power Washing, go to BlueShieldPowerWashing.com.

At Home With The Archie Family LOCAL RESIDENTS MICHAEL AND CRYSTAL ARCHIE JUGGLE HOME COMMAND CENTER WITH ‘WE CAN ACHIEVE’ MOMENTUM

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARIEL RENAE

While a popular TV comedy drama used to declare 'Eight Is Enough,' one Nashville family ponders an inverse question in their home: 'Is Eight Really Enough?' Although the oldest of Crystal and Michael Archie's six children is the only one currently not living at home, another young man has been staying with them while he finishes college locally -- and they really enjoy having a full house. "My heart is family. Family is everything," ascribes Crystal, who recalls wanting to maintain her flexibility to be home while also desiring to supplement their family income after an injury concluded her husband's NFL running back career. Usher in Rodan+Fields, an American manufacturer and marketing company specializing in skincare products, 13 years ago. Crystal saw this at-home business opportunity as the answer to her prayers, but juggling family, business and life from the same

residence came with its own challenges. "I remember when little fingers would come wiggling under the door when I ran to the bathroom for privacy to do business calls or presentations. My husband was amazing about supporting my work efforts, and eventually placed 'Do Not Enter' signs on doors when the kids got older," she says. "I can't say enough about how helpful Michael was, including cleaning the house and making lunches for the kids if I had to leave for meetings. He told me that he had gotten to pursue his dream with football and now it was time for me to get after my dream." The Archies had four biological children, then adopted two boys from Ethiopia, one 10 and one 17. "Most days, it seems like we always had enough kids here for a sports team or two at the house," recalls Crystal, who had her first baby when she was 18 years old and had four children total by the time she was 28. Operating a family that large takes many skills. She says she and Michael handled it by being "easy going," taking one day at a time, and encouraging their children to be determined and know in what they believe.

Yes, even their Goldendoodle, Arlo, has gotten in on the family action, by becoming a fluffy, online duo star. Vision boards also were a valuable tool for this family. Crystal says they sat with the kids and asked them about their own dreams, so those goals could be incorporated into future decisions. "We had an organic group approach, they saw their desires in the vision boards come to pass, and they grew up in the business, so they totally understand why we focused like we did. The skin care business was life-changing for our whole family," she adds. Michael, who played for the Oilers/ Tennessee Titans for four seasons, now trains young football players, a few who just started their NFL careers. While he still helps Crystal with her business, this stay-at-home mom turned CEO entrepreneur now manages a large team of independent consultants that has expanded globally into four countries, representing clinically proven dermatological products primarily for acne, sun damage and aging. “I was not an overnight success, but I chose to stick with it," recalls Crystal.

"There were down days, but I always saw the bigger picture, and I didn’t compare myself to others. I focused on my family's journey, and it may have taken me a few years, but I got here, and I don’t have a single regret." In her 'spare time' (wink), Crystal sandwiches in trips to Ethiopia, her home-away-from-home, to support her initiative called Treasured. In fact, she traveled there this January. Not only do the Archies sponsor children in Ethiopia, Crystal welcomes missionary donations to assist what's commonly referred to as the 'Trash Dump Community.' Through her Specifically Designed program, Crystal says they provide business and skill-set training to women in Africa, which creates the space and teaching tools for them to grow and have opportunities to secure long-term changes. "We're now partnering with 100 women there, teaching them skills and trades that empower them to take care of themselves and their families, and to get into better housing. For many, it's the first time in their lives that they're working and saving money," she says.

82

To that end, Crystal offers a special silver or 14-karat gold-plated necklace through her Treasured Shop for $59 each, with all sales proceeds funneled completely into assisting the estimated 200,000 women and children in need who live in Korah, Ethiopia. Additionally, Crystal owns an online boutique through which loungewear and curated accessories -- such as ruby red slippers, mirror trays, cosmetic bags, clutch bags, themed coffee mugs, blankets and wine glasses -- can be purchased. Crystal's secret to progress? "Never, ever, ever give up!" "Part of our legacy in teaching our kids how to handle and overcome life's challenges is to dream big and handle the day-to-day issues and decisions with a go-getting, enterprising attitude, and never let anyone have the power of stopping you from pursuing your goals. The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is a legacy of character and faith," she asserts. CrystalArchie.com

LOV

E, LIVE AND

HOW TWO TEENS ARE MAKING A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT BOTH LOCALLY AND WORLDWIDE

GI V E

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

86

FASH ION F OR WA R D | EDUCATI ON

While most teens were trying to stay busy during the lockdown by playing video games and interacting with others on social media, friends Dillon Elam and Connor Suscha wanted to do more. In July of 2020, they founded Tone 3. “Tone 3 is a social enterprise focused on connecting as many people as possible to the organizations that make our area as welcoming and compassionate as it is,” says Dillon. “We do this by selling simple, stylish clothing with varying designs that allude to these essential organizations.” Two-thirds of its profits are used to support six deserving mostly local nonprofits, while one-third goes into brand expansion. “Tone 3 is organized around three ideas that we believe serve as the fundamental motivations behind the majority of charitable acts in the community,” adds Connor. “Hence, all of the organizations we support are either focused on the people we love, this earth we live on, or the ways we can give back to people in need. Put simply - Love, Live and Give.” Only 17 years old at the time, they say they knew they lacked both the platform and the expertise to intervene directly in the community and facilitate a positive improvement by themselves. “As a result, we began searching for a way to provide support for the organizations we knew already have considerable impacts, while still having a hand in bettering the community we appreciate so greatly,” says Dillon. “Our search concluded after we settled on selling nonprofit-inspired merchandise, and since then we’ve been sharpening our skills in pursuance of one simple goal -- to recognize the most impactful members of our community by giving help to those who need it most.” They began by selling T-shirts, and their goal was to produce them with a true purpose and also ensure they were comfortable, stylish and would appeal to people of all ages. They also wanted to be responsible stewards of the environment. “We started out with all of our shirts being heavyweight organic cotton, but now we have some made out of recycled materials as well,” says Connor. In addition to T-shirts, Tone 3 has expanded its offering to include pants, fleeces and accessories. And, the entire line is eco-friendly and made in a sustainable way with virtually zero waste. The logos are on the smaller side, because they state they don’t want them to overtake the entire items. But, each one is big enough so people will notice it and hopefully ask the wearer about it. In the beginning, the two friends handled everything themselves – from marketing and buying to ironing on logos (which resulted in a lot of burned fingers as well as T-shirts) and shipping. Now, most of the logos are embroidered by a local company, but they still handle every other aspect of the organization, while also attending college. When it came time to decide on the organizations to support and partner with, they based their decisions on their virtues of

Love, Live, and Give. “For our Love pillar, we chose the Dragonfly Foundation, an organization that aims to support the families of pediatric cancer patients,” says Connor. “We also chose a local company called My Bag My Story. Its founder creates homemade sewn backpacks, duffel bags, and things of that nature, and sells them online. Then, for each one that’s sold, she uses the proceeds to make an identical bag to give to a child in the foster care system. As a foster care mother, she often saw children piling all their belongings into black trash bags and felt it was demeaning.” Under the pillar Give, they support Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, and the Murfreesboro Cold Patrol, which assists the homeless. For its Live pillar, they give to the Coral Restoration Foundation and The Audubon Society.

“To know that we have the capacity to create this from one little idea and watch it grow into an organization that's had the ability to influence the lives of so many people in our area in a positive way, is transformative and humbling,” says Connor. Adds Dillon, “From something that went from building T-shirts on my bedroom floor to now having boxes full of clothing to ship out is just amazing.” They would love for more people to wear their clothing and promote their mission. “We are a bridge for these nonprofits, and want to make people aware of their needs,” says Dillon. Daphne Oz: Beautiful Evenings at Home Emmy-winning TV Host & NY Times Bestselling Author Shares her Dinner Hosting Favorites

New York Times bestselling author Daphne Oz talks about her newest book, “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss Food to Celebrate Eating Clean,” which launches in April. We sat down with Daphne Oz to learn more about her journey to home entertainment.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ: I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant

Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
