LIKE MOST KIDS, 10-YEAR-OLD HENRY MACLANE LOVES CANDY. Unlike most kids, Henry decided to turn his love of sweets into a business and created the Chocolate Fat Fish Company.

“I started this company three years ago when I had an idea,” he says. “I package our mixed candy in clear little cellophane bags and color code it by separating each bag into different colors.”

Depending on the order, it usually takes him about a week to prepare 75 to 100 packages.

One order alone was for 144 packages!

There are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink and purple packages and each one weighs about two ounces. “They’re great birthday party favors and kids love them,” says Henry.

“He asked how he could sell in stores and decided to iterate and create a medley of these colorful pre-wrapped candies, package them and rebrand,” says dad Jared MacLane.

“And lo and behold, that landed him in stores.”

Henry, adds his dad, operates the entire business on his own, from developing the website, designing the logo and packaging, to conceptualizing the product and how it should be displayed in stores. He also initiates the meetings with store owners and conducts the sales meetings.

“Henry is a born leader, and has an incredible amount of drive and perseverance,” adds mom Katherine Petty MacLane. “To say I’m proud is an understatement. He has a gift for business. Even at the onset of Chocolate Fat Fish, he would ask for ingredients for a lemonade stand to accompany his candy, calculate his profit and pay me back immediately because he didn’t want to owe anything.”

these was Christine Haack of HGTV’s Christina on the Coast and Flip or Flop (which Christina films alongside her ex-husband, Tarek El Moussa).

“We met eight years ago when Tarek was going through thyroid cancer treatment,” says Cara. “Christina reached out to me to help with a meal plan for him that aligned with his treatment protocol. Very quickly she realized she needed some nutritional support as well.”

Christina was drained from caring for a sick husband, raising a toddler, and being new to the TV world.

Shortly thereafter, they became fast friends, and have maintained a close relationship to this day. In fact, when Cara and her family moved to Franklin last year, Christina was the first to visit and even bought a place nearby to

“We really wanted to touch on rewiring because a lot of it is how we think,” says Cara. “If time is the biggest obstacle, you can actually gain time by meal prepping. It’s not actually as hard as you think, but you have to have the energy to apply it. So, we say give us five days, which is when people’s energy starts to change.”

Being a wife to Chris, a financial planner, and a mom to four daughters -- Maggie (age 11), Mila (9), Claire (8), and Carli Jo (Jo Jo) (5), Cara knows all about time constraints.

Soon after moving into their new home, they also rescued a Pyrenees Australian shepherd mix named Aspen, so they have a full house.

Limited time is one of the reasons that Cara now only takes on athletes on an individualized basis. For others, she offers a unique and effective group challenge program.

both kids and adults, and she gives many grab-and-go ideas, such as rolling up protein and carbs. A great snack or meal can be a combination of nutritious crackers and

cheese, hard-boiled eggs and sliced apples, watermelon

and nuts, and popcorn with nutritional yeast, which adds not only a cheesy flavor but protein and B vitamins as

well. “It’s not about sneaking these foods in, but instead just shifting the experience. This is what I want to teach with The Balanced Kid.”

BY INCREASING PUBLIC AWARENESS OF AND PROVIDING PET THERAPY. This volunteer organization, with national headquarters in California, provides an accessible certification process that allows qualified therapy teams to provide effective pet-provided therapy services in and around Middle Tennessee.

The Music City LOAL chapter was established in September 2015, and is comprised of 22 teams – two of which are cats!

LOAL-certified therapy pets and their owners visit residents in assisted living homes, VA Murfreesboro, memory care facilities, hospitals, hospice care facilities, schools, libraries, day-care centers, preschools and special education classrooms. More recently, they’ve visited colleges and universities to provide stress relief for students during final exam periods and Mental Health Mondays.

The organization began during the early 1980s when Liz Palika, an award-winning author and dog obedience instructor, began to introduce the concept of pet-provided therapy to residents of north San Diego County in California. In providing the service, she saw a need for a larger organization to accommodate the growing number of requests she received from assisted living facilities, memory-care facilities, schools and hospitals.

Liz officially created Love on a Leash in 1984. The organization was incorporated in 1995 as The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy as 501(c) (3) charitable organization.

With more than 2,300 members throughout the United States, volunteers formed chapters, such as the Music City group.

The nonprofit is based on the following premise: A therapy pet’s primary function is to brighten someone’s day. The majority of LOAL members are involved in this social side of therapy work. Therapy pets and their handlers visit destinations to provide emotional support.

During August, Music City LOAL teams currently are scheduled for visits to: + Harmony at Brentwood + Hickory Gardens Senior Living + Clarendale at Bellevue + Centennial Heart at Skyline Therapy pets are privately owned and typically visit facilities on a regular basis. All Love on a Leash members are volunteers. For the most part, the group’s therapy pets are dogs; however they also certify cats and rabbits who have shown they like people and have the proper temperament. No breed restrictions apply, with the exception of wolf hybrids. All pets must be at least one year old with basic obedience knowledge to be considered. Once certified, the team (whether your pet is a dog, cat or rabbit) is covered by a general liability insurance policy while providing therapy visits.

All Music City LOAL dogs are eligible to earn AKC Therapy Dog titles, including purebreds and mixed breeds. To earn an AKC Therapy Dog title, dogs must be registered or listed with AKC and have a number.

Music City LOAL was nominated for a Hands On Nashville Volunteer Award during 2016. In Spring 2017, they were awarded Hall of Fame winner for their work at Signature Healthcare in Madison, Tennessee. They also became the first LOAL chapter nationally to receive a significant monetary donation from a generous Nashville family foundation.

The local chapter leader is Rebecca Pyle, whose teammates are Connelly and Nora, the only feline volunteers at this time although a new feline team has just begun their training to join LOAL. “Connelly loves going on visits with all of the dogs. Residents and patrons love hearing him talk to people and walk on a leash down the halls hugging the walls. He likes cuddling up next to people in bed or in a warm lap.

And Nora loves people, especially kids and is very adventurous and sassy,” she says.

PET WASHING STATION Build a pet washing station that’s equipped with everything needed: An area for your dog to sit or stand, an accessible shower head or steps for easy access by your furry loved one. Whether your dog is large or small, they can go up and down the steps and sit in the station so you don’t have to arch your back to reach them.
