HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! LET THE FIREWORKS & COOKOUTS BEGIN!

JULY 2017 PUBLISHER

Christian Houston | Christian.Houston@LifestylePubs.com EDITOR

Ed Atlas | Ed.Atlas@LifestylePubs.com

I

don’t know about you, but I have southern roots that grow deep. I love the summertime and sitting on the patio with my best girls, talking the night away with refreshing beverages.

I grew up chasing fireflies barefoot, usually in my best Sunday dress, and staying outdoors with my friends until suppertime. Back then, summer involved independent adventures around the neighborhood with my friends, discovering new creeks and creating outdoor forts for our new clubhouse spot for the week. Our parents never worried, as they were the ones that insisted we get outside and play. I remember the awe of watching fireworks that seemed to last the entire month of July, and the ubiquitous aroma of backyard cookouts around the neighborhood. In this day and time, however, I struggle to see so many of our children staying inside and, instead of making memories like mine, whiling away the hours with electronic gadgets.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP BRENTWOOD AWARDS COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS Youth Leadership Brentwood (YLB) awarded college scholarships to three graduates during a recent Williamson, Inc. business luncheon

“Not only is this one-of-a-kind car going to be the envy around Smashville, it will also benefit many local charitable and community service organizations through the winning bid," said Predators president and CEO, Sean Henry. "With Nissan’s support for our community and passion for our team, we get to reach thousands more individuals all across Tennessee.” The 2017 Nissan GT-R Premium features a 565-horsepower twinturbo 3.8-liter V6 engine. The Nashville Predators Foundation strives to meet the educational, social, health and cultural needs of the community by offering unique resources and financial support to local youth-oriented organizations. The Foundation has donated more than $1 million to community organizations during the 2016-17 season.

at the Franklin Marriott Cool Springs. The scholarship recipients are Rhea Jaisinghani and Hannah Williams, both seniors at Ravenwood High School, and Sam Christie, a Brentwood High School senior. Jaisinghani will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall. Williams will attend the University of Alabama, and Christie will attend Miami University in Ohio. Youth Leadership Brentwood is a leadership development program of the Williamson County Chamber Foundation (WCCF), the nonprofit affiliate of Williamson, Inc., for high school sophomores and juniors who live or go to school in Brentwood. Participants engage in daylong sessions that include teambuilding exercises, taking a guided bus tour of Brentwood's history, meeting with government leaders, conducting a mock city commission hearing, getting career tips from business leaders, and learning about community service opportunities in the area. Businesses and community groups generously support the WCCF leadership programs for adults and youth. This year, the student scholarships were supported by funds allocated through the YLB Steering Board, the Leadership Brentwood Alumni Association and parents of YLB alumni.

staycation is a great way to enjoy time off from work with family or friends. As with an actual getaway, the more you plan for fun, the more likely you are to enjoy your time 'away.'

roundings that we don’t recognize all the opportunities available in our own backyard. To help plan the perfect staycation for you and your family, here is a list of some things to do around Brentwood this summer.

A TRAVEL AGENT CAN SAVE YOU TIME

A Google search for “Mexico all-inclusive” returns more than 41 million results. A search for the “best 3-week European itinerary” brings 5 million results. You could spend days or weeks reading, reviewing and comparing. But an experienced travel agent will know the destinations, flights and properties that best suit your travel wish list. Agents have either experienced the destination themselves, have a client who has, or have access to industry professionals who can provide relevant feedback. Your travel agent can tend to every detail. A TRAVEL AGENT CAN SAVE YOU MONEY

A TRAVEL AGENT WILL OFFER TRAVEL INSURANCE

I’ll be honest. I never purchased travel insurance until I became a travel professional. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? As it turns out, a lot! I could write an entire article on the importance of protecting yourself and your vacation. Travel insurance is not a tactic to get you to spend more money. Travel planners offer insurance because they have either had their own experience with travel mishaps, or they have assisted many clients who experience their own. In short, listen closely when your travel agent offers insurance. Potentially, it can be the most important component of your vacation package. Travel agents take their role in your life seriously. If you have a trusted travel agent, you understand the value they bring to your travel experience. If not, why not consider having one plan your next vacation? It will be the first step in planning a stress-free adventure. Cynthia Davis is a contributor to Brentwood Lifestyle and the owner and operator of Cool Springs Travel Group. 270.719.1043 CALL TODAY TO FIND OUT MORE! I’ve always had a passion for fitness, wanting to look good and to be stronger, faster and healthier. When I was senior in high-school I suffered a back injury due to my big ego, improper weightlifting and poor coaching. After spending six months on the couch recovering I had gained weight, became slow, weak and unhappy with myself. Soon after I joined the Army. While training for my deployment I faced obstacles I could not complete because I was not strong enough. Specifically, we were conducting training raids on a village and I was tasked with pulling my friend and myself out of a window; due to my lack of strength I could not complete the task. The instructor conducting the training approached me and said “Boom, you’re dead, so is your friend”. Even though it was just a training exercise and no one was hurt it became very real to me. If I remained weak and couldn’t pull my own weight this fictional scenario could become a reality. This major life lesson stuck with me and now I take strength training, functional fitness and overall general fitness very seriously. While I don’t train my athletes how to survive a life or death situation I do incorporate functional fitness that translates and carries over to every day life. For example, people tell me all the time “I can’t squat because I have bad knees” but I’ve seen them sit down in a chair and stand up several times, if you can sit on the toilet you can squat. I’m not some fitness guru trying to sell you a secret only I know with a 6 easy payments of 7 difficult payment scheme. I am coach who wants to guide you as you grow. Anyone can make you tired, but that does NOT qualify them as a good coach. Too many people today are in fitness for the wrong reasons. They’re in for business and not coaching. In an attempt to get more social media “likes” they replace functional and fundamental movements with shiny and sexy drills that look cool, ultimately leaving you drenched in sweat with no real skill learned. This increases the risk of injury for athletes. Anyone can make you tired, I’m not anyone, I’m your trainer.
