Lifestyle Letter
Dear Brentwood:
F
irst, a quick word of “thanks” as this issue marks the First Anniversary of Brentwood Lifestyle. At this time I recall all of the amazing people we’ve met along the way. I’m thankful to you, our readers, for providing feedback and accepting us into your homes each month. I’m thankful for the outstanding support we’ve received from local businesses and organizations. And I’m thankful for our amazing team of writers, photographers, and advertising partners.
This has been an amazing journey and I’m happy to announce that because of our magazine's success, I’ve accepted a new position that provides me the platform to produce and develop publications just like ours across the nation. As my new position begins, I've brought in a dynamic publisher and media consultant, Christian Houston. A Brentwood resident, Christian has been a successful media and advertising consultant for several reputable companies including The Tennessean, L’Oreal, Chanel and Armani. She has always had a dream of running her own publication, and she is very excited to get out to work with both Brentwood and Franklin communities. You'll find Christian's experience, creativity, and drive invaluable and I expect big things from our publication. This is our Second Annual Food Issue and in it we’ve profiled some of the top local chefs Brentwood has to offer: Skylar Bush of The Honeysuckle, Jeff Herman of Brentwood Country Club and Christopher Smithing of Mere Bulles. We chose them for their innovative fare, hospitality and diversity of styles. The depth of culinary talent in this town is amazing! Along those lines we’ll tell you about a nearby restaurant that not only serves great food but gives back to the community every day. And if you want to take your own cooking skills up a notch, we’ll tell you how to get started on designing your own outdoor kitchen. As you know, February is also the month for Valentine’s Day and we think you’ll enjoy reading about one local love story in particular, and you’ll find the Valentine Gift Guide to be a great resource for unique gifts, many of which are designed locally.

Bringing the Indoor Out Enhance Your Outdoor Living and Entertaining Space with an Outdoor Kitchen ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
re you a fan of those HGTV shows that feature glamorous outdoor living spaces? Have you decided you need to have one of those fabulous outdoor kitchens and bring the glamour to your own backyard? But you’re a little confused about where to begin? We did some of the legwork for you and talked with the experts at the locally and family-owned Embers Store to help take some of the guesswork out of the equation and make your outdoor living space a reality. Whatever it is that rings your inspiration bell, Crystal Watson of Embers Store says, "In addition to budget, you need to consider style and functionality, but there are beautiful and functional options for any size space and budget." She adds, “Anything you can do inside, you can also do outside.” For starters, “Any type of yard is suitable for an outdoor kitchen as they can range from a simple built-in grill area to a fully functional

gourmet kitchen.” And size isn’t really an issue either. “You don’t really need much space to have something that is both beautiful and functional.” When designing an outdoor area, there are several factors to consider regarding layout, flow and function of the space. Perhaps the most important element is creating an experience where kitchen prep space transitions seamlessly into the entertaining area. Then there are the details: appliances, culinary and beverage options, countertops, lighting and of course, product durability. You'll want equipment and furnishings that can withstand the punishment of seasonal weather extremes. Watson says, “We are fortunate to have many great outdoor living contractors here in the Brentwood, Franklin and Nashville area. These are contractors that really focus on outdoor living and outdoor kitchen builds and understand all that goes into creating a space and structure to provide the ultimate outdoor living experience.” The folks at HGTV say you can spend anything you want on an outdoor kitchen, from $500 for a freestanding grill and a rolling side cart to $25,000 for a fully outfitted cooking and entertaining zone with built-in appliances, stone countertops and plenty of room for guests. How much you should invest in the project should be proportionate to how much you'll use the space. Says Watson, “I think for many of our customers, outdoor kitchens have provided opportunities for them to connect with their neighbors, parents from their kids' schools, friends and family because it gives them a space where they can cook and entertain many people in their own home.”

n the same way that music in Music City inspires one to sing or play guitar, our city’s signature dishes inspire many of us to dabble in the culinary arts. And while entertaining family and friends can be exciting and fun, throwing a lavish dinner party can be the source
of an extra large slice of stress. But what about the chefs around town who do this every day? What inspires them? How do they stay at the top of their game? What does it really take to produce an exceptional dining experience? Recently we sat down at Brentwood Country Club for a Chefs Roundtable Discussion with some of Brentwood’s very best chefs. They chatted candidly about the nuances of their craft and what they try to bring to the table for their guests. These culinary masters of different genres run the show at some of Brentwood’s most beloved restaurants. Our discussion included: Skylar Bush, executive chef at The Honeysuckle; Jeff Herman, head chef at Brentwood Country Club; and Chris Smithing, general manager and executive chef at Mere Bulles. THE COOKERY IS PROVIDING NEW AVENUES FOR THOSE WHO ONCE LIVED ON THE STREETS. ARTICLE ALLISON WINDOM MYSZKA PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY SHATERIAN AND ALYSHA KNUDSEN

n the surface, The Cookery looks much like any other Nashville café. A new highrise building is taking shape just down the street, and the sounds of a jackhammer can be heard through the main dining room windows. There’s quiet music playing, and a few people work diligently on laptops around the room. It’s late afternoon and with the exception of occasional laughter, the kitchen is fairly calm. But a closer look reveals that one of the men behind a laptop is

“You see that man over there? If I were to pat him on the back and say, ‘Good job, brother,’ you’d see a little glimmer in his eye.” He pauses, and the smile on his well-worn face is infectious. “That glimmer? It’s hope.” While we chat, Adams recommends a “Porky’s Tater” for me, which is a baked potato covered in a well-seasoned mountain of pork. After the first bite, I could taste exactly what he meant by “top-notch.” It was consumed in record time. Since coming to The Cookery, Adams has stayed busy, and is currently working as much as he can to build savings for a new chapter in life. He hopes to move into an apartment soon, and his ultimate goal is to set an example for current students at The Cookery. “I want these guys to see someone who’s been on the streets, came here and worked hard, and kept going,” Adams said. Ray Arnett, kitchen manager and trainer at The Cookery, met Swayn during a bout of extreme winter weather in early 2015. Arnett sought safety in the gymnasium at Woodbine Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where Lambscroft Ministries still provides meals and temporary shelter to men and women twice a week. With an incredible story of redemption and faith, Arnett now spends his days working alongside Swayn and teaching men vital kitchen skills. The program at the Cookery now has 13 graduates, and Arnett is proud to be one of a handful who now work on staff. Because he can relate to those who have experienced homelessness, Arnett thinks of students at The Cookery as his brothers and comrades. He beams when describing his favorite part of his management and training role. “You see that man over there? If I were to pat him on the back and say, ‘Good job, brother,’ you’d see a little glimmer in his eye.” He pauses, and the smile on his well-worn face is infectious. “That glimmer? It’s hope.” To learn more about The Cookery, stop by and experience their entirely made-from-scratch menu at 1827 12th Avenue South in Nashville, or visit their website at TheCookery.org.
