LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Future is Bright For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Bozeman City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. As I look back on this last year it's amazing to consider the ups and downs both physically and emotionally. From amazing adventures chasing snow storms around the country, to blowing out my knee, being laid off from a job, grueling surgery and recovery to the excitement of moving into a new home, achieving gains in my recovery, and recognizing how full my life is. The times I felt the worst, now feel so much smaller than they did in the moment and looking back many of them I now consider achievements. I learned a lot through all of my experiences this year… but most importantly I learned to appreciate the valleys just as much as the peaks. When it comes to anything in life — business, finance, food, home and personal health — it’s not what you do some days that move the needle — it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brûlée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days — it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. Cheers, M AG G I E H E B R O N , P U B L I S H E R @BOZEMANCITYLIFESTYLE

CURATED DESIGN Curating a design plan is more than just copying a Pinterest or Instagram photo. It involves real people, their lifestyle, their expectations and their point of view. Unique personalities are reflected by lifestyle choices; design can mirror that. Curation accounts for all the nuances of life to provide space for experiencing while expanding the opportunities for growth and change. Design is not static - it flows. The Nature of Bozeman is also how I feel about its reflection through design and architecture. For whom are we designing? What do our clients want to experience in that space that we help them create?

Founder of Zephyr Cycling Studio, Carolyn Williams, has created an unparalleled wellness experience while sharing her strong love of music. Carolyn hopes that Zephyr helps all who walk through its doors to understand that they are enough, and that their experiences will empower them to live authentically, freely, and with compassion for themselves and for others. Zephyr Cycling Studio offers two weeks of unlimited classes for $49, which includes two complimentary guest passes so patrons can bring their friends.

“We love the community we have created at Build Physio & Performance” says Laura Opstedal, owner of the physical therapy clinic. “Adding Build Gym is a way for us to stay connected with our community when they are finished with physical therapy. We are hoping to add additional wellness services and classes that extend beyond physical therapy. We had a lot of input from our patients and interested gym members, so we know this space will meet the needs of our community!”

Owner Amy Darr describes their new format “Pure Barre Define” as a weight-based strength training class that helps to develop muscular strength and power. Combining Pure Barre fundamentals with additional dumbbell training to enhance muscular definition. Taught by highly trained teachers, Pure Barre features four group class formats that deliver an effective total-body workout focused on low impact, high-intensity movements that lift and tone muscles, and improve stretch, agility and flexibility for everybody. If you are wanting to check it out, first class is free to locals.

T H E MOU N TA I N PROJ EC T

Ekam Yoga was created to be a place that welcomes everybody and every body, says owner Bailey Evans. “Regardless of age, injuries, sexual orientation, prior yoga experience, or the fact that you think you might hate it, we want you to come practice with us!” Ekam was built on the idea that yoga can help a person to feel better, no matter what they are struggling with. “You just have to show up, and we will take care of the rest!”

The biggest goal of The Mountain Project gym, according to founder Michael Wolfe, is to create community. “It’s not about the gym; it’s about the people we support to achieve bigger things for themselves than they thought possible” he said. The gym offers sport-specific strength/conditioning classes for mountain sports like ski conditioning, run/cycle conditioning, hunting conditioning, general mountain conditioning, and also features a bouldering gym for climbers, as well as a dry-tooling cave for ice climbers.

Q&A with Dr. Kaley Burns ARTICLE BY HAILEY LIVINGSTON

Big Sky Natural Health

Big Sky Natural Health, located in Big Sky, MT, is a trailblazing wellness center dedicated to holistic living and personalized health solutions. In this Q&A session, Bozeman City Lifestyle had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Kaley Burns to explore everything Big Sky Natural Health has to offer.

Q: WHAT IS REGENERATIVE HEALTH?

A: At this point, we have a focus on “preventative medicine”. Regenerative medicine aims to help us keep our tissues, organs and cells healthier longer by restoring function to them. From more of a holistic standpoint, asking, “What can we be doing in terms of lifestyle and therapies to best benefit our bodies?” Our body has this amazing ability to heal itself; if we introduce the right therapies, it can actually regenerate and it can heal.

Q: WHAT KIND OF SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

A: We do everything from nutrition consultations to more broad-based lab testing. We look beyond your standard lab tests—we want to tailor our practices to best suit your physiological needs. Maybe that’s hormone therapy, IVs or vitamin supplementation. Acupuncture is another thing we offer that

“We

can be great for the mind-spirit connection. Looking at our “higher-tier” services, we offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy—something very useful for our patients that have suffered from a concussion. We also offer a specialized IV therapy called adenine dinucleotide (NAD) which is amazing for supporting the effects of healthful aging both physically and mentally.

Q: WHAT IS NAD?

A: NAD, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is a naturally occurring coenzyme derivative of niacin that helps us run different pathways within our body. It was previously used in addiction clinics, which eventually led scientists and pharmacists discover it was “rewiring” the brain. It came into light to use as treatment for things like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. It can be great for preventing cognitive decline.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SERVICE?

A: My favorite is something called PRP, or platelet rich plasma injections. It can benefit any joint in your body from your knees to your knuckles, but you can also use it for hair loss or an all-natural facial, similar to botox-type treatment. We’ll draw a patient’s blood and spin it; once the red blood cells sink to the bottom we are left with a golden serum, that’s where all of the growth factors and immune cells are—everything you need comes directly from your body. Depending on the severity of the patient’s needs, we may do anywhere from two to six treatments. We’ve seen great success with PRP.

BOZEMAN'S 24/7 CRISIS CENTER of compassion

ARTICLE BY MALA SHEA

22

G IV IN G BAC K | WEL L NESS

Bozeman Help Center, Inc. was initially conceived back in February of 1971 by a small group that formed Parents and Children (PAC) to help alleviate the increasing drug problems in the Gallatin Valley among the teen population. On March 22nd, 1971, this group transitioned into Gallatin Council on Health and Drugs (GCHD) as a private nonprofit and opened the 24-hour crisis intervention center. June of that same year, the founders achieved financial help from a variety of key community stakeholders to open a 24/7 call-in, walk-in all-purpose crisis center in an abandoned house at 323 S. Wallace with an established easy-to-remember phone number, 586-3333 that is still used today. The crisis center outgrew their location and moved into their current office at 421 E. Peach Street in 1992. Over time, the program expanded by adding The Sexual Assault Counseling Center (1996) to provide trauma-based medical, legal, personal advocacy with on-going counseling to reduce the long-term effects of sexual abuse. This led to the name change from GCHD to Help Center, Inc. with a focus to provide support with well-trained volunteers that can respond with confidence to any crisis to anyone in an appropriate and professional manner by providing a safe and confidential environment with compassion. Bozeman Help Center, Inc. has been and continues to serve 13 southwest Montana counties with numerous programs such as 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Montana211.org (2007), The Sexual Assault Counseling Center, Hearts and Homes Family Resource Center, and Gallatin County Child Advocacy Center. The desire to purchase this campus inspired a campaign for immediate relocation, innovative expansion, and remarkable service As Gallatin County and southwestern Montana experiences population growth, the current small space on Peach Street has caused enormous challenges keeping up with the rising demands of mental health and other services. Counseling rooms and walk-in crisis spaces are limited, compromising the focus and private care that clients need. After months of collaboration and community support, the organization’s Board of Directors and leaders agreed to purchase the 5.1-acre property at 699 Farmhouse Lane to expand their no-cost and confidential programs across our existing 13-county service area. The campus is owned by Western Montana Mental Health Center (WMMH), but they no longer offer the expansive in-person services, so this 5-building property can better utilize meeting the needs of mental health and other crisis in the community for Bozeman Help Center, Inc. The desire to purchase this campus inspired a campaign for immediate relocation, innovative expansion, and remarkable service. The WMMH campus has five buildings to meet important mental health-related community needs allowing consolidation of all Help Center, Inc. services into one location. Allowing them to increase direct-service crisis counseling staff and growth furthering organizational support to retain and train staff members to

better accommodate anticipated rising call and service volume, and trauma-informed counseling at a time when sustained mental health support can be extremely difficult to access. Children who have been removed from their birth parents will have a private, neutral, and home-like space to continue connection with their parents, paired with supportive coaching and education for the adults to improve parenting skills to better serve the needs of their children. The extra space will also better serve the staff and volunteers who provide profoundly challenging services with adequate ergonomic, and technically adapted call center stations. Counselors working during the night, will have a comfortable place to sleep during lag times when they are not serving those in crisis. Volunteers and staff will be co-located and have well-designed collaborative workspaces, a feasible break area, and safe parking. With the generous support from Andrea and Michael Manship, for the first time in the 52 years, Bozeman Help Center Inc. will have a small suite of simple offices and conference rooms to better support team members and volunteers. Andrea and Michael Manship who will match dollar for dollar on the next $500,000 raised through donations. If you can help by volunteering, donating, and/or participating in fundraising events, please visit www.bozemanhelpcenter.org.
