LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Style Issue

September 2023 PUBLISHER

Brent R Fjeldheim | brent.fjeldheim@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Joni Diehl | joni.diehl@citylifestyle.com

This month, we want to take a moment to celebrate the life of Brent Fjeldheim, the Bozeman Lifestyle publisher. We are saddened by this sudden loss. Brent was always so genuine and truly cared for people. He would do anything for anyone and was quick to bend over backward to help someone in need. He put everyone around him first over himself, and would give the shirt off his back to a stranger. He loved the Bozeman community dearly and was honored to bring this publication to your doorsteps every month. He will be greatly missed. Each team member is like family to us, and we hurt for those that were closest to him. Please keep his family in your prayers. Life can be so short so make sure you take time to tell those you care about that you love them. Our theme for this month is style. It is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. Style evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities. What we’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate. THE CITY LIFESTYLE TEAM @BOZEMANCIT YLIFEST YLE

HATTIE + REX ARTICLE BY NANCY MOHONEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY 406 PHOTO

For the past decade, Bozmanites headed downtown to Hattie Rex when needing a special gift for a friend or family—either human or canine. Hattie Rex had become a local success, yet after 15 years of building a nationally recognized E-commerce brand of handmade metal jewelry for pets and humans, Tessa Witmer decided it was time to hang up the hammer and pass the torch (so to speak). In 2022, the birth of her second child provided Tessa the resolve needed to put her E-commerce business and retail storefront up for sale— and around the corner, the owner of Mōka Boutique was waiting for just such an opportunity. Nancy Mahoney, owner of Mōka Boutique, had been looking to expand her retail space, and Hattie Rex seemed like a great fit, given the overlap of women’s jewelry and giftables. Kaycee Schultz, Mōka’s manager had been learning jewelry making techniques over the past decade and was willing to take on the production size of Hattie’s business. While Nancy got busy transitioning the storefront space at 18 South Willson into a new men’s shop--Allōy,

Kaycee took over the production of dog tags and customizable human jewelry, as well as the incredibly popular Everlasting Bracelets. For legal purposes, the business is now officially known as Hattie + Rex (Hattie and Rex) and has been rebranded with a new logo and website. Kaycee has been adding her own designs, including a new line of silver rings with semi-precious stones, and has plans for a new line of bolo ties. The Hattie + Rex production studio has relocated to the annex space behind Mōka Boutique at 36 West Main. All of Hattie’s charms and dog tags are on display and available for purchase inside, and there you can also find Everlasting Bracelets—ready for walk-ins every Monday and Friday. Hattie + Rex still produces lifetime-guaranteed, handmade pet tags of copper, brass and silver, as well as personalized cuffs, belt buckles, keychains, rings and charms for humans. In 2023, as part of its mission to promote opportunities for local artists, Hattie launched its first official MSU Internship program with Jewelry Design students Lydia Truman and Bri Mango. hired Bozeman High School graduate, Amanda Faure, as a summer intern based on her extensive jewelry making coursework. Kaycee has been training her to produce dog tags and jewelry, as well as manage some E-commerce aspects of the business. Going forward, Hattie + Rex hopes to have a vibrant internship program for a variety of jewelry artists working in metals, who would also benefit from becoming part of its successful E-commerce platform. Doug Syverson with deep Gallatin Valley roots, established Blinds of Bozeman in 2010 to serve this community with the highest quality of products and exceptional service at a reasonable, affordable price. Doug comes from career expertise in construction, flooring, and window covering industries. Today, Doug’s son Chase proudly took over his dad’s legacy business with his wife Sarah to continue to serve the community with the same level of integrity and service as Doug provided. This wonderful, hassle-free, full, custom service is offered to home or business

owners with Blinds of Bozeman bringing their showroom to your door. All the customer needs to do is schedule a free, no obligation consultation at their home or place of business to view fabrics, colors, textures, and lighting to create a more personal ambiance. Blinds of Bozeman will answer all relevant questions, measure for correct fit, place the order, and of course install to guarantee complete satisfaction. Finding the correct blind or shade is important for proper light filtering, or adding the right fit to meet style needs for work or living space because they

come in many styles, forms and sizes. High quality window coverings also increase the value of the property. There are many types of window coverings. Blinds are made of a harder material such as wood, metal, vinyl, or composites that provide a complete range of visibility and are adjustable to light. Shades are made from softer materials such as fabric, vinyl, or natural material with a variety of colors, patterns, opacities, as well as textures. Shades now have cordless and motorized features for enhanced safety and convenience. Blinds of Bozeman also offer draperies and shutters. Shutters are low maintenance, offer

thermal insulation, and more of a classic style. Draperies add color and warmth when lined and interlined and work as great insulators as well. Blinds of Bozeman also offer services to work with architects in commercial fields to provide window coverings that meet hightech specs and safety requirements. For convenience at home or in the professional workspace, motorized blinds are a wonderful feature to adjust the lighting at a touch of a button or by having access to your system remotely through your phone.

As he shared the stories of his childhood in detail, the love and adoration for his grandparents, mom, siblings, and multitude of cousins made his face light up. He not only cherished his Norwegian heritage and family traditions but took genuine interest in everyone’s backgrounds that he met throughout his journey. Family was the foundation of life to him, both biological and to bridge gaps between friends and strangers to expand us all into one big family. Brent attended Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, majoring in business. He loved being elected president of the Student Body with only one, his competition, voting against him, whom he later became friends with. Brent Fjeldheim, a man with a deep sense of compassion and empathy, was Publisher of Bozeman City Lifestyle. He came into this world with a courageous heart on March 13th, 1973, and tragically passed away in a car accident on July 7th, 2023. Brent was raised in Glasgow where he graduated from high school in 1991. In high school, Brent played football, was on the swim team, co-captain of the wrestling team, and involved in the youth group at First Lutheran Church. He worked at the family business in Glasgow Livestock Sales Yard, which I had the privilege of getting a personal tour with stories of ranch life last summer when we made the trip for his dad’s funeral service. Over the past 21 months, I have come to know and respect Brent as I learned of his struggles and adventures throughout the 48 years before we met. He told me the fondest memories besides seeing his

“Beyond his vast love for Montana, Brent had an innate ability to make everyone feel seen and understood. well as waxing skis at Howelsen Hill. He was a proficient skier, partook in adventurous back-country climbs, and off-trail skiing. One of those summers, he was a whitewater rafting guide, and he found true heartfelt joy in the vast landscapes and nature as he hiked and explored the Colorado mountains. His ranch experience landed him a job as a wrangler on the Vista Verde Guest Ranch in Clark Colorado. He led dude trail rides, cleaned cabins, helped serve in the dining room, and taught himself to play the guitar to entertain guests around the campfire. At the age of 28, Brent experienced working on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska for a summer which he later wrote 30 chapters in 30 days about his experience. We began editing this book together a month before his tragic accident in hopes of finally publishing it. After returning from Alaska, Brent and a friend started a business together as a carpenter, contractor, and construction consultant in Colorado which he operated for almost a decade in the Aspen Colorado valley. In 2007, Brent’s proudest times of life was becoming a dad to Sophia, Clairebelle, Benjamin, and Addison over a span of 10 years. His four precious children were his whole world. He loved reading to them and singing songs to them. One of the songs he sang regularly was Randy Travis ‘Deeper than the Hollar’, which made Addison’s face light up as she heard it in my car one day, she stated, “This is the song my daddy sings to me at bedtime, I love it, turn it up!”

Brent moved to Bozeman in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic quarantine to pursue his dream of being a publisher. He told me his biggest challenge was that he had to put a mask on every morning and “hit the boots to the ground”, and that people were not very receptive while the world was in panic mode. He persevered through a lot, and the impact he made on the community members with his gentle compassionate spirit was profound. This was all due to his warmth and genuine interest in each member he spoke with. After all the hard work he began in March of 2020, he was able to publish his first issue of the magazine in December of that year. One of his advertisers, Garrett Carter from Carter’s Boots described Brent as, “Beyond his vast love for Montana, Brent had an innate ability to make everyone feel seen and understood. No matter the circumstance, he would lend a helping hand, offering support and comfort to those in need. His selflessness was a testament to his character and the impact he made in the lives of others’’. Brent’s goal, both through Bozeman City Lifestyle Magazine and a personal dream, was to connect the spirit of a community with local businesses to create harmony and unity. He genuinely cared about everyone’s wellbeing and stayed positive even when he wasn’t treated well by some. Brent accomplished his dream and that’s why Bozeman City Lifestyle Magazine is loved by thousands of readers.

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin • 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum • 1/2oz- Lime juice • Topped with ginger beer • Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame

GARNISH • Small paint brush • Simple syrup • Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame

INSTRUCTIONS Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.

Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate? Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straightlined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion. We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says. “I selected this collection of dresses to show the versatility of the black dress and to give women some new ideas of how to wear the evening gown with a train on a night out with her girlfriends or the traditional summer strappy maxi dress while running errands in cooler temperatures.” Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own. “A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds. If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.” CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
