Summer is in the Air
Independence Day for most of my generation means fireworks and barbecue. Vacations, maybe camping, lots of sunshine and laughs. Some of us might wet a line, and others will use the opportunity to work in the garden, or the yard or fix things around the house.
The tree canopies of Bozeman’s streets are full of leaves and most of the winter road sand has been cleaned up, presenting that sense of paradise that draws so many into Bozeman.
July days are long, Montana long, and evenings on the porch, in the backyard, or around a campfire are comfortable and pristine. Gardens will thrive and landscaping will be beautiful.
July signifies the peak of summer to me. The odds of getting snow are pretty low, even in Bozeman, and outdoor activities are well underway. The kids are full swing into summer vacation, summer projects at home have begun, and Main Street is bustling with tourism.
When the Independence Day fireworks fill the skies, spring is a memory and fall seems a long way off.

BUNKHOUSE BREWERY
ARTICLE BY KATIE THOMAS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY 406 PHOTO
In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, a bunkhouse is described as “a long, rectangular building” with whitewashed walls and unpainted floors, with bunks “showing their burlap ticking” and shelves “loaded with little articles, soap and talcum powder, razors and those Western magazines ranch men love to read and scoff at and secretly believe.”
Fortunately, the Bunkhouses you will find in Bozeman are much more jovial places. Tucked between MSU’s Alumni Foundation and Jimmy John’s, at 1216 West Lincoln Street, the first of the two Bunkhouse Breweries opened in 2015. A second location opened at 7715 Shedhorn Drive in Four Corners in early 2022. Serving anywhere from eight to 14 beers, Bunkhouse Brewery has grown into a local favorite, where owners Andy and Beth Stohlmann can often be found pouring beer for customers themselves.
The only brewery with more than one location in Bozeman, Bunkhouse can now accommodate thirsty folks on both ends of town. The Lincoln location is more intimate, with a capacity of 49 and a shaded wraparound patio, where friendly leashed dogs are welcome. This Bunkhouse started as a little-known hole in the
wall, the ambiance of which remains, where anyone from the aforementioned rancher to doctoral students to families gather for merriment.
The 4C Taproom can accommodate more people, with a capacity of 150, including the upstairs mezzanine, or “Top Bunk”, which can be reserved for special events. This Bunkhouse hosts weekly open mic Mondays and trivia Thursdays, and both locations have Tuesday cribbage league. There are special events, like their May anniversary party and last year’s Bunktober, which saw around 1,000 folks come through in all.
Now, about the beers. The selection includes something for everyone, with various porters, IPAs, sours, blondes, and the always-ontap Sabino Red, which is malty with notes of red, and Running Iron IPA, it’s a balanced brew, with bitterness and pine notes. Most are rotators; the Stohlmanns pride themselves on keeping their beers interesting. “When we’re busy, we put on two new beers every month,” said Andy. Even the names are entertaining; a personal favorite: “We Get It, You Tele!”
A pilot by trade, Andy Stohlmann has been a home-brewing enthusiast since his time with the Air Force in

Germany, when returned home to find that he could no longer purchase his favorite beer (Maisel Weisse) in the U.S. at that time. “A good friend of ours was a home brewer and said, ‘I can just teach you how to make it,’ and the rest was a series of poor life choices,” he winked. “I came here to teach ROTC at MSU, and that kept us here.” Beth Stohlmann had sworn she’d never be an entrepreneur like her parents and joined the Air Force as a foreign area officer and intelligence professional. But, “I thought I married a pilot,” she laughed. “I married an entrepreneur.”
And why the name “Bunkhouse”? Because it gives recognition to Montana’s farming and ranching culture, especially its frontier heritage. Bunkhouses are historically as Steinbeck described – small, rough buildings providing barracks-like sleeping quarters to cowboys and the like. The intention is to evoke the days when workers gathered to share some pints after a long day of work; not so different at these Bunkhouses today. Except you do have to leave eventually – you don’t have to go home, but you can’t bunk there.
One thing is certain – both locations give Cheers energy. The Stohlmanns are partial to cultivating community, and it shows. “I was asked how the pandemic affected our business, and I have a very clear memory of the shut-down,” said Beth. “Our regulars would line up down the sidewalk, 6 feet apart, so that they could come to pick up their growlers – many came with envelopes of cash for our staff so that they could continue to pay their bills. It’s so cool to watch people greet each other and be involved in each other’s lives….the silver lining is that the pandemic uncovered what was there; I don’t know that I would have seen that otherwise.”
Few things beat sitting on a sunny patio with your favorite beer in the Montana sunshine. Bunkhouse Brewery is one such option as we embrace summertime, and if you missed the original Bunkhouse when it opened, no time like the present to seek it out – or visit the new Bunkhouse in Four Corners. Or call an Uber, drink responsibly, and visit both!

CURTAINS TO RAISE, MONTANA YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
THEY WILL BRING MUSICIANS TOGETHER FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO PERFORM WITH SIR DONALD RUNNICLES.
Over a year and a half in planning, this summer will bring the debut performance of the Montana Youth Symphony Orchestra. A one-week intensive program involving around 45 to 50 students, Sir Donald Runnicles, Music Director of Grand Teton Music Festival, will conduct the orchestra in their gala concert on July 30.
ARTICLE BY CHRISTOPHER CARTWRIGHT
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS LEE
It all began at the Grand Teton Music Festival in 2021, as Dr. Ilse-Mari Lee, President and Founder of the orchestra, listened to cellist Sheku KannehMason perform the Dvorak Cello Concerto with some of her students, who had graduated from college or left Montana for other reasons. “I realized in that moment that we needed to create an opportunity for these students to return to

Montana and perform in the Treasure State,” she said. While public schools offer music programs and Montana colleges feature orchestras, “There’s nothing for Montanans that have left, nor is there an opportunity for high school and college students to play together,” Lee added.
She mentioned the idea to others at the time, including Board Member Dr. Dennis Wentz. “When I first met Ilse, she mentioned the idea of a youth symphony orchestra, and I said, ‘That sounds wonderful’ never thinking it would happen,” he said. “She made the vision into focus, and then she called me and said, ‘I want you to be on the board.’”
The entire operation will be performed within a week. Rehearsals begin in Bozeman on July 24, led by Great Falls Symphony Conductor Gordon Johnson, who is also a board member. On Friday, the group will travel to Jackson, WY, as special guests of the Grand Teton Music Festival. There, the students will attend a performance of Richard Strauss’ “Ein Heldenleben,” and rehearse Saturday morning with Runnicles. Sunday morning will usher in the orchestra’s debut, occurring at 3 p.m. in the new auditorium at Bozeman High School. Billings pianist Tanner Jorden will be featured as a soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C Major, K 467, followed by Mendelssohn’s 3rd Symphony, the “Scottish Symphony.”

One of Lee’s foundational experiences was the South African Youth Orchestra in her home country, which she participated in from thirteen through her college years. “It was just the absolute formative experience of my life,” she said. Besides being immersed in great orchestral music, she learned a wide variety of skills, from discipline to goal-setting; but simply hearing older players discuss their plans for college changed her life’s trajectory. “There’s no question that I would not have pursued college or any kind of education beyond high school if I wasn’t in that youth orchestra,” she added.
Most students participating in the Montana Youth Symphony Orchestra are between 20 and 25, though some are as young as 16, according to Board Member Dr. Renée Westlake. A Bozeman public school music educator for 40 years, she has firsthand experience
with music’s positive effects on young people. “From the mathematical use of musical technique to the random use of compositional creativity, from the historical impact on all cultures to scientific use of sound production, a young person can find success with the proper nurturing from music educators,” she said.
Wentz expressed similar views. “Music is such a universal language that connects people,” he said. “That’s what we want to create here: training our students to become good citizens by becoming better musicians.”
Lee is already focused beyond this season. “Eventually, we envision statewide tours, where we will bring great orchestral music to smaller communities,” she said.

JUNIPER FACE + FIGURE
Brett McMillan had a dream after nursing school to live in a mountain town. Fourteen years later that vision turned into a very successful business.
Juniper Face + Figure saw its first client in 2019 as an established concierge-style mobile service providing cosmetic treatments to men and women in the comfort of their own homes throughout the state of Montana. Word of mouth grew, and Juniper found a forever home in Bozeman, operating now in three beautiful suites in Four Corners.
Originally from Minnesota, Brett says finding Montana was love at first sight. “I packed `up a 20-foot moving truck with all my belongings in 2009, with only $1000 to my name, and moved out here all by myself. I didn’t know a single soul and it was scary and exciting at the same time,” she said.
Several years later Brett chose to make changes and search for the life she yearned for. “I didn’t want to waste any more time,” she said. “I remember sitting in the living room of my new apartment asking myself, “Okay, Brett. What do you want to do with your life?” Brett knew she had always loved helping others, as a nurse she had formerly worked in Dermatology where she fell in love with skin care, skin cancer prevention, and aesthetics. Her idea for cosmetic injectables was born.
“I spent months researching Montana law and studied statutes to ensure a nurse in Montana could perform cosmetic injectables with an overseeing medical provider. I finally got the answers I was looking for.”
And that is how Juniper was born. Because aesthetics and cosmetic treatments are not taught in nursing school (or even medical school) qualified medical professionals need additional training and certifications. In these aesthetic courses, nurses, PAs, nurse practitioners, and even medical doctors are all taught aesthetic treatments together. Brett also found that having a natural artistic ability really sets cosmetic injectors apart. “That, paired with a belief that ‘more is not better’ and really standing behind a natural look - is the best kind of service you can offer your clients,” she said.

Once viewed as hush-hush treatments or services only ‘vain or insecure people’ seek, Brett says she is beyond happy to see the paradigm shifting about the stigma surrounding services such as Botox and fillers. “Juniper encourages self-care, aging prevention, and building confidence. We are all aging and if that’s something you want assistance with, we are here to help you. Even more, we don’t just preach natural-looking cosmetic treatments, we pride ourselves in giving that to every single client!” She also believes there is some truth to the saying: “If you look good, you feel good. “At the end of the day, we all want to feel good. So do what makes you happy,’ she said.
Juniper has a variety of popular services such as non-surgical facelifts called EMFACE. Juniper is the first in Montana to offer that service. These involve no needles, no downtime, no pain, and no toxins. Dermal filler treatments include under eye filler, chin enhancement for profile balancing, natural lip fillers, and more. A treatment called EMSCULPT NEO permanently burns fat and builds muscle simultaneously. Juniper also offers Kybella Kybelia which permanently dissolves a double chin.
“Juniper has a different approach on cosmetic treatments”, Brett said. “We believe that less is more and we pride ourselves in creating results that truly are natural looking. Unlike many medical spas, we are also in the business of saving our clients’ money. We want to build confidence and help with age prevention, but not push unnecessary treatments.” Brett also has her own recommendations and skin tips to go along with age prevention which include using a high-end skincare line. Juniper sells ZO HEALTH, a product used for protecting skin from the sun and tanning beds. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and smoking, going to bed with a clean face, sleeping on your back, and, including Botox and fillers to slow the aging clock are offered by Juniper.
Above all, Brett says Juniper believes in stellar customer service and building relationships. “We won’t enter the room as a no-name injector in a stale clinical environment, she said. “We do a lot of things differently here and beyond providing you the very best aesthetic experience, we genuinely want to create and foster a special relationship with each of you. At the end of the day, we care - and that is what truly sets us apart and makes us positively, uniquely different.”
Juniper also offers consultations, and they are always complimentary. For more information on all the wonderful services, Juniper has to offer our community or to schedule a consultation, call Brett at 406-600-9733. Juniper is located at 155 Mill Town Loop, Unit 2D, Suite A.
