My favorite part of January in Montana is that my body has adjusted to the cold, and a sunny 25-degree day feels pretty nice. My favorite temperatures in January are 25-28 degrees with sunshine. Clothes stay dry, layers can be left on generally inside and out, and it’s not as hard on vehicles as 10 below zero. Those days are wonderful, but there are many kinds of days in January. Bozeman doesn’t get the cold (or the heat) that I experienced growing up on the highline in Glasgow, Montana; so, for me, we have a temperate climate in the Gallatin Valley. I have spoken with others that don’t always feel that way, however. Granted, those first below-zero days of the season feel pretty cold. But, by January, they are hardly noticed, other than that grinding sound we hear when starting a car in the morning (especially those of us who use the garage as an office and a shop, rather than a parking place). Removing snow, spreading ice melt, scraping windshields become second nature. Bozeman is full of outdoor enthusiasts who look out the morning window excitedly, hoping we have gotten the next “big dump” that creates a powder day on one of our ski resorts. By January, most of the drivers have slowed down and the rat race seems a little less intense. With the holidays behind us, and substantial winter still ahead of us, we are settled in. Coffee flows, layers are just part of getting dressed, by now we have our window scrapers in the car, and the icy roads are just part of our commutes. We also start looking ahead, to the spring cleanup with the leaves we missed, and the mower that will need to be started for the first time of the new season, the garden we hope beats the one done last year... For me, January is a time to hold the people close even closer and count our blessings. We can remember to respect those who came before us, that didn’t have cars to worry about, or high tech base layers to carefully wash in the washer and dryer. Those who didn’t have to concern themselves with finding a good HVAC contractor to repair the whole house heat system. Sometimes I’m torn between wishing for a simpler time, or just appreciating what I have. For me, January is a thoughtful time.

For the past 26 years, Bozeman has been the proud home of the fierce Icedogs. From the beloved and unforgettable Valley Ice Garden, to the Haynes Pavilion of today, players have come from all over the country to hit the ice and defend Bozeman’s honor. Anybody walking into the skating rink can feel the great energy and camaraderie of the team, but the Icedogs are much more than just a team. Head Coach Mike Perkins put it best when he said, “It’s great to bring hockey back to Bozeman, but the relationships are the best part.” Being an Icedog is a crucial stepping stone for those looking to make it to college hockey and other senior
men’s leagues like the Bozeman Stingers. One of the biggest hurdles to face as a team is recruiting the best players. Not only are they representing the Icedogs, but representing the community as a whole. That gives coach Perkins and Associate Coach Jeff Burton the chance to mold these young men into responsible, hard-working players that Bozeman is proud to call their own. The entire team is required to either work a job or go to school part-time, and still be in the locker room at 7:00 a.m. the next day for practice. Hockey has always been an integral part of Bozeman. The Icedogs are electric and bring tons of passion to the game. No matter where the players come from, they put Bozeman on the map as a force to be reckoned with throughout Montana and the rest of the country.
and adults across town hit their local parks and ponds for the love of the game. As many of the Icedogs have left their home for the first time to live on their own and hone their game, Bozeman continues to put a grip on the hearts of every player. Even NFL SuperBowl Champion Dane Fletcher, a former Icedog, let Bozeman pull him back to open a great training center (The Pitt) where you will find the Icedogs when they aren’t on the ice. The beauty of Bozeman brought coach Mike Perkins back after coaching Junior Hockey in Butte. His love of the game and the players is a proud addition to the town. The legacy of the Icedogs has put players all over the world, with many players heading on to NCAA and ACHA college hockey. Yet it comes as no surprise that many of them come back to make Bozeman their home. It takes a village to raise a kid, and even more to raise an Icedog. After the loss of the Valley Ice Garden, groups like Gallatin Ice and the Bozeman Amateur Hockey Association have been proud supporters, keeping the gears turning and the ice frozen for all the players, while Lydia Klemencic and Dawn Perkins take care of everything in the

background for the Icedogs. Any local kid could make their way to the rink and get started with Gallatin Ice’s Learn to Skate programs all the way up to practicing with the Icedogs before they make the team. The next big goal for the Icedogs, and all of hockey in Bozeman, is the completion of the Ressler Motor Ice Rink inside the Ice Barn. Local businesses and individuals have the opportunity to help support the completion of the new ice rink, complete with stadium seating ready to seat 1800 fans. Donations can be made to Gallatin Ice or by getting in touch with coach Mike Perkins at mike.perkins@ bozemanicedogs.com The most important thing folks can do is go out, watch the games, and cheer on the team. The Icedogs are electric and bring tons of passion to the game. Pure Barre to Offer New Experience ADDITIONAL FORMATS COMING FOR 2023 ALLOW FOR A MORE "COMPLETE" PURE BARRE EXPERIENCE
For 10 years, Pure Barre has been offering full body workouts in Bozeman that transform a person both physically and mentally through musically driven group classes. A new type of workout will now be available Jan 2nd. Owner Amy Darr describes “Pure Barre Align” as a total body workout, fusing strength and stretch sequences to develop overall flexibility and mobility. The 50-minute class merges classic work with positions from stretching techniques including Yoga, Pilates, and static stretching fundamentals, while emphasizing overall alignment, strength, and flexibility. “There are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them.” Austrian writer Vicki Baum is not alone in this sentiment. Dancing is perhaps one of life’s greatest joys and, when Sadie Barac opened Starlite Bozeman in 2019, she had a vision of providing a space for movement of all kinds. Bozeman had previously offered nothing like this: a venue for adults to take various dance classes, teach various dance classes, and explore creativity with motion. Starlite is nestled in what some consider to be old, old Bozeman, on the curve of East Tamarack Street as it morphs into Front Street, in an unassuming metal building adorned with warm white lights. It is situated across from the historic Northern Pacific Railway train depot, and welcomes its guests with a retro Welcome to Starlite! sign out front. Upon leasing the space, Sadie completely revamped the former gas station then blacksmith shop, scrubbing off the layer of soot covering every surface, and installing appliances, a floating floor (best for dancers’ feet), dance poles and bars, and her own eclectic style. The chandelier over the dance floor is woven with jewels from her late mother and a close friend, and an antique sousaphone hangs in the corner. The restored sign outside was found in the weeds and read FOOD MART, presumably from its days with Treasure State Oil and Gas. “This community is amazing–people I didn’t even know would show up to help,” Sadie said. “Local businesses gave me discounts, people helped me with design, neighbors donated décor–there’s no way I could have done it alone.” Sadie held an open house in September, 2019, inviting the community to explore her new space and, over time, has amassed a loyal clientele and a wide variety of independent dance instructors. Despite the COVID-19 shutdown, Starlite pushed through. “We’re ready to thrive, not just survive,” Sadie said. The rotating schedule of classes offered at Starlite includes country, swing, Latin, belly dancing, yoga, burlesque, cardio, contemporary, pole, oula, chair, feminine CONTINUED >

movement, salsa, hip hop, tango, African, break dance, floor, 5Rhythms, stadium technique, and modern dance. Dancers can attend classes individually, or via the more economical option of purchasing a Class Pass package. In addition to classes, Starlite offers private lessons, children’s summer camps, an annual December holiday tea party, workshops such as the upcoming Butterfly Transformation workshop for mothers and daughters, rental space for private events including birthday parties, bachelorette parties, presentations, children’s events, concerts, rehearsal dinners, and even small summer weddings. In the future, Starlite will offer cabaret shows, partnering with Juicy Entertainment, which is moving into the building. Dancing can be a very effective way to get an aerobic workout, with a side of endorphins. One of the most popular classes, country swing offered by Western Roots Country Dancing, sees participants glowing with sweat as well as exhilaration and delight. Oula is another favorite, fusing high-intensity cardio moves with straightforward choreography. Working up a sweat is absolutely an option at Starlite.

For those who prefer more introspective, gentle, or exploratory physical activity, such as yoga or feminine movement, dancing may look very different. Some dance for empowerment, expression, inspiration. Some dance just for pure fun. Everybody’s body is different and there are many ways to manifest movement. Sadie knows this. Having grown up dancing, she spent years taking various classes and seeking out places to dance in the evenings. When she got married and started a family, dancing was put on the back burner for a long time while she raised her children and pursued her degree in the healing arts. One day, going through boxes, she unearthed her kindergarten picture with her declared ambition for when she grew up: “to be a ballerina.” Ever since, Sadie has been exploring embodiment practices and embracing movement. “I remembered what brings me joy,” she said with a radiant smile. “I wanted to bring that to others.” Mission accomplished. Sadie has since created a collaborative of unique and innovative, independent dance instructors who provide creative choreography, wellness, exercise, and an understanding of the importance of movement to the community.
