Letter from the Publisher The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. The holidays growing up here in Bozeman were filled with adventure, family, friends and food. Treats were a big thing in our household, cornflake wreaths and cut out cookies meticulously baked and decorated with my mother were always on the menu. As was peanut brittle, everyone pitched in with my grandmother, to make her famous recipe. Stretched so thin you could see through it so it would melt in your mouth. Heading out into the mountains for a winter picnic to find and cut our Christmas tree was always an adventure that involved sledding, hot chocolate and lots of laughs. Then on Christmas Eve, we would get to open one present, would attend a church service with lots of carols and would finish the evening driving through the streets of Bozeman enjoying the holiday lights and luminaries. Always topped off by preparing Santa’s cookies, milk, and of course carrots for the reindeer. Often my brother and I would camp out at the base of the chimney trying to catch a glimpse of that ever elusive fellow. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what Bozeman has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy and love. Cheers and Happy Holidays! Celebrating 43 Dazzling Years of Beloved Holiday Tradition
When you think of Christmas in a mountain town, one of the first things that comes to mind is the famous Christmas stroll, a Bozeman holiday tradition since 1980. Every year after Thanksgiving, downtown Main Street is transformed into a magical wonderland, just like a scene in a Hallmark Christmas movie. The installation of this iconic holiday decor, followed by the stroll, marks the start of the holiday season for the town. Cache Perdue Maples, Program Director for the Downtown Bozeman Association (DBA) says that of all the unique annual events DBA coordinates each year, the stroll is the longest standing, now in its 43rd year. Cache found herself in the world of recreation and tourism after graduating from college and strongly believes in Bozeman’s “small town, big energy” vibe which is definitely evident in the stroll. “The first event was developed through a collaboration with the Baxter Hotel,” she said. “They act as the host for Santa pictures to this day.” But the Baxter Hotel is only one of many businesses who help bring it all together. In 2022, there were 21 for-profit business sponsors,

50 nonprofit activity vendors and 24 food vendors. There is no fee for businesses located downtown to participate in the stroll unless they choose to team up with the nonprofits, and then they can spread some holiday cheer by entering in the window decorating contest. “There are many different avenues for involvement,” Cache said, “For-profit businesses can sponsor an event, either fiscally or with in-kind raffle prize donations and receive marketing benefits and host a booth on Main Street during the event. Nonprofits are invited to host holiday activity booths and blend community outreach with festive fun, and mobile food vendors and restaurants can choose to team up with a nonprofit to donate a portion of proceeds from crowd food sales.” All nonprofit activity and food vendors pay a fee of $75, and sponsorship tiers vary. As with many of the free community events hosted by the Downtown Bozeman Association, sponsorship is vital. “Fiscal sponsorship contributes towards obtaining proper permitting, providing safety and sanitation for patrons, and beyond,” Cache said. “ In-kind sponsorship acts as the prizes we raffle off for purchasing a button. In fact, last year our top prize was a hot air balloon ride for 2!” Even in 2020 during the Covid epidemic, DBA managed to keep the stroll alive and a part of the community by “reimagining” the event for the season to keep in place with health regulations. Prizes were raffled off via button sales, and many socially distanced activities were started including the holiday window decorating contest, the parade of lights, and the gingerbread house contest. Events such as the traditional holiday music concerts were posted on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube for everyone to enjoy virtually that year. Cache says she loves seeing the crowd go absolutely wild each year as Santa parades down Main Street channeling Christmas cheer and ceremonially lighting the “spiders” at each intersection. In case you aren’t familiar with the “spiders” these are the traditional giant nets of garland cascading over the Wilson, Tracey, Black and Bozeman intersections of Main Street. They have been called everything from trees to bells to spiders over the years. “The stroll really does have something for everyone,” Cache said. “From cozy food to fun holiday activities, it’s all covered and we hope to see you there!” This year’s Christmas stroll kicks off December 2nd at 4:30 pm.

One evening in 1985, my grandparents flew into Bozeman from Cleveland. Because they only consumed steak and bourbon, my parents took us all to the Land of Magic Steakhouse in Logan, Montana. The restaurant is child-friendly, and everyone was happy. Somewhere in the 1990s, I went back with my prom date for our requisite fancy dinner before the dance. Fast-forward to today, and the Land of Magic is still attracting everyone from hunters and ranchers to tourists and locals alike, seeking the area’s best steak. Owned and operated by Jay and Beth McCurry since 2007, the Land of Magic sits in the unincorporated township of Logan, once a busy railroad junction on the Northern Pacific Railway. Logan is now a residential community along the Gallatin River
with no zip code. Upon pulling into “town,” the main structures appear to be grain elevators and old trailers. The Land of Magic is hidden in the center of it all, next to an abandoned white church. Its address is technically in Manhattan, Montana, the nearest incorporated town, making Land of Magic one of Gallatin County’s best-kept secrets. What isn’t a secret is the food, and it’s what keeps customers coming back: a good selection of appetizers, burgers, chicken, duck, fish, seafood, and of course certified angus steaks. All dinners come with a relish tray, mini loaf of bread, choice of shrimp cocktail or salad, regular or twice-baked potato, and Wilcoxson’s ice cream. On a recent visit, my husband exclaimed, “No one likes cauliflower!” as he wolfed it enthusiastically from the relish tray. The mango vinaigrette was delightful on the house salad, and the filet mignon was simply true to the flavor it should be – not masked by any sauces or flavors. Reservations are recommended as this cozy spot fills up fast, especially after MSU Bobcat games. Land of Magic has
been affected by the growth in the area, and it’s getting harder to just walk in without calling ahead. The good news is their “come as you are” policy – it’s fine to roll in off the river, or dress to the nines. If you can’t get into the dining room, try Land of Magic’s adjacent and properly Montana-esque bar, with its lacquered wood, taxidermy, and friendly locals. The entire place has a cozy, rustic feel – Land of Magic is known for its hospitality and warm service. “It’s homey and nice; walking in is like getting a warm hug,” says Beth. “There’s definitely a feeling people get when they come in, and that’s the magic.”

BRINGING SUPPORT AND COMPANIONSHIP TO SENIOR CITIZENS

Befrienders, a nonprofit 501c3 organization, was founded by Pete Merrill February of 1993, after an 84-year-old local woman tapped on his car window in a grocery store parking lot and offered him 35 cents for a ride home. After giving her a ride and clearing ice from her sidewalks, she asked him to come back and visit for cookies and ginger ale, which he did. Pete noticed her loneliness and social isolation; this led him to meet with organizations within the community to create companionship and assistance program for the elderly. He initially began with 106 names from the ‘Meals on Wheels’ recipient list to start Befrienders, with a vision to nurture and enrich relationships by introducing volunteer companions to seniors who struggle with social isolation. For over 30 years, Befrienders has served thousands of local seniors in the Gallatin Valley to reduce social isolation among vulnerable seniors, striving to improve the quality of life socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. Each volunteer and their matched senior spend at least an hour per week interacting
together. Nicole Martinez, a volunteer with her 91-year-old match Donna Garber expressed, “Befrienders has allowed me to meet with someone who I would have not had the chance to. We do everything from taking drives into the mountains, to going to the farmers market, to visiting art galleries in downtown Bozeman. We have so much in common and it brings me so much joy that I can connect with someone who is 58 years older than myself and to make a friend, no matter what age! It’s a great feeling when I go to pick up Donna and I see her smiling and ready for our next adventure together!” While Maggie George, a Befriender recipient, expressed her feelings about her volunteer match, “Denise has changed my life. Befrienders has changed my life. It’s been a year since we first met! It’s insane how quickly time flies. It feels like a hole in my week when I don’t see her.” With Bozeman being one of the 15 fastest growing cities in the country, the elderly population is currently at 13.3% percent of the community, totaling over 12,400 individuals. The rapid growth has been challenging to keep up with demand and has reached maximum capacity until more volunteers come forward to serve. Befrienders is the only organization in the area that offers these companionship services for free with trained volunteers. The pandemic in 2020 took the program back to ground zero, but the focus since has been to build back up bigger and stronger than before Covid19. By 2022, the program grew to 117 volunteers from the community who put in 6,996 hours of service with 111 senior participants. For 2023 building project, the initiative is to increase organizational capacity by hiring a part-time coordinator to handle programming
responsibilities while the Executive Director continues to fundraise, conduct administrative duties, and train student interns. Internship program for Befrienders is open to MSU students in the Community Health, Human Development, Family Science, and Early Childhood and Child Services degrees. The interns spend 10 hours a week with hands-on field experience in every aspect from on-boarding, training volunteers, interviewing seniors, making matches, and following up on match success. Many seniors in the program are on a fixed income and less than 10% can afford these types of services through a private company. The Befrienders volunteers include anyone 18 years and older who desires to give back to the community to enrich a senior’s life. Fig Jelly Honey Variety of Cheeses Salami or meat of choice Olives (provide a variety)
• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers
Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Place your favorite holiday cookie cutter on the board first. Fill the cookie cutter with mini marshmallows. Next, layer the large items first. Begin with the chocolate covered Biscotti and build around that using berries. Pile the berries high. Next add a variety of chocolate covered treats on opposite sides of each other between the mounds of berries. Be sure to add touches of berries around the edges. If space allows, place hot cocoa on board. Otherwise, set bowl full of hot cocoa mix and any additional hot cocoa fixings adjacent to the board.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
