SEPTEMBER 2022
This month our focus is on “Style” and we have featured several of our local Bozeman style experts for not just our closets and grooming, but also our kitchens. Our homes can be representative of our style, which often culminates in the kitchen, so we have featured La Cuisine, which provides a great new resource for the best culinary equipment. Tina Cuskar curates the elegant collection and holds cooking classes featuring some of Bozeman’s most respected local chefs.
Capelli’s rounds out the issue with examples of how hair can personalize and complete the style using current trends in fashion to create a message all your Bozemanown.can be hard to curate for style. We have a broad variety of res idents from many different backgrounds and regions. With Bozeman con tinually developing its own style, we’re keeping the experts on their toes! My personal uniform of boots, jeans, collared shirt, and an occasional cowboy hat will always be in style. At the same time, it’s fun to watch trends come and go, and come back again. Is that a mullet?

Apricot Lane Boutique may be a chain, but owner Amber Sartain has made sure it definitely has a local flare. “We are a locally owned franchise and I personally make sure I do all the purchasing for the boutique,” Amber said. “Everything from lip-gloss to jeans to sweaters, I pick it all out myself.”
FASHION FORWARD | SHOPPING
Amber wants the community to know that Apricot Lane is a small business, and that not all small businesses are downtown–the boutique is in the Gallatin Valley Mall.
The franchise gives her a pool of vendors, some branded, some not, and she said she likes to pick items that bring the newest trends to Bozeman. “I watch a lot of tiktok videos and Instagram videos to see what the newest styles are that are popular, and then I order from a lot of Los Angeles mar kets.”
“We are really into community events and we like to have what people need and are looking for when it comes to those events,” she said. For example, if Amber finds out there is going to be a party with a specific dress theme, like a “Blue Ball,” she will make sure Apricot Lane has a huge selection of blue dresses in plenty of time for the ball. The boutique always has sales going on, and Amber encourages shoppers to come to her with any custom orders they have as well. “I may not have it, but I can always look for it!” For more infor mation on Apricot Lane Boutique, you can follow Amber on Instagram at albbozeman.

Communication and honesty with your stylist can help achieve your goal. One of social media’s most sought-out hairstyles for longer hair is the wolf cut. Heavy lay ers with curtain bangs and face-framing create texture, movement, and volume. Texture (in cutting terms) gives movement to the hair and makes it look more tousled or undone. The curtain bangs help open up the face, making the cheekbones more prominent. This haircut would be great for clients who have texture (curl) to their
Fashion and styles have been changing and evolving for centuries. Many styles of the past are making their way back into the salon. Shags, mullets, perms, lobs, bobs, and heavy-layered looks are great exam ples. Mixing in new techniques of today helps create a more evaluated and chic look while also protecting and keeping the integrity of the hair. Style is import ant because it is a form of expression, how you represent yourself, and a stylist’s duty is to help you feel your greatest.

hair. The cut accentuates those luscious locks and brings life to their curls. Shadow roots and balayages are perfect for blonde clients who love something that’s more low maintenance. The shadow root helps blend down the natural root to help soften the demarcation line from previous highlights. Balayage mixed with a shadow root helps blend and make the grow-out process nicer if one would like to grow out their natural hair. Balayage is a hand painting technique for highlights that cre ates a graduated natural look. The growout is usually four to six months to a year depending on personal maintenance and style. Purple shampoo and conditioner are great tools to help keep blondes vibrant in between appointments. Depending on how many times someone washes their hair, the treatment should be used at least once a week. Think of it as a self-toner at home. Men’s styles have also been evolv ing over these past few years. Classic fades have been changing into longer looks. Have you seen a mullet or two wandering around? The 80’s are back and long hair is in–playing around more with texture to create movement. Time to switch out that 3-in-1 and use conditioner to keep your flowing tresses moisturized. When coming into the salon, it can be intimidating and challenging not knowing the terminology. Never be afraid to ask your stylist what something means. A good stylist educates and gives advice on what they think would complement your features. With so many great styles coming back into vogue, options for self-expression abound.

For more information on products La Cuisine car ries or to inquire about the classes offered, you can call 406-404-1838, check out the website at lacui sine-bozeman.com or visit the store at 2405 W. Main, Suite 6, in the Oakwood Square Complex. One year ago, La Cuisine opened their doors, bringing something just a little different to the Bozeman area.
And that is exactly what La Cuisine offers. The in-store classes give participants hands-on experience and instruction with several different chefs teaching a variety of cooking styles and cuisine. Some of the upcoming classes in September include, “What CAN’T he Sous-Vide?”, “Wild Game Sausage and More,” and “Oktoberfest Meets Montana.” Tina is very passionate about community, and she stresses, “It’s not all about us!” That is why La Cuisine partners with local chefs to teach the cooking classes. “This way, they can promote their businesses as well,” she said. La Cuisine has rolled sushi with Dave’s Sushi, fried cauliflower with Tanglewood Grill, and mastered local mushrooms from SporeAttic with Blacksmith Italian.
The community-minded aspect continues into the retail side as well as the classes. La Cuisine car ries products from local Montana vendors such as Bozeman Oil and Vinegar, Montana Block Cutting Boards, Earlywood Spoons crafted in Red Lodge, Ridgeline Spice, and Claudia’s Mesa. They will soon be carrying handcrafted local knives as well made by Cudaway Knives. There are also a variety of cook books available from local authors such as Chef Tony McPhail and Karen R. Barbee, author of The 406 Table.
“This was 100 percent my brainchild,” said owner Tina Cusker. As a military wife she had traveled all over the world with her husband, spending 7 years in Europe and 1½ years in South Korea. When they retired to Bozeman, one of the first things Tina realized was that Bozeman lacked a kitchen supply store. “But I didn’t want to just sell kitchen stuff,” she said. “I was an edu cator for years, teaching mostly elementary school kids, and I really wanted to bring an educational aspect to the store in addition to kitchen supplies.”
and Jam on Main,” Tina said. This summer, La Cuisine was also able to offer children’s classes with their par ents. “It’s all about building relationships around the table when we break bread together,” Tina said. “So, the kids got to get their hands a little dirty and learn how to cook some healthy meals at the same time.”
“Tony McPhail also teaches some of our classes, and he is the culinary director for Revelry, Dave’s Sushi, Tina is very passionate about community, and she stresses, “It’s not all about us!” That is why La Cuisine partners with local chefs to teach the cooking classes. “This way, they can promote their businesses as well,” she said.
In addition to the local flare, another focus of La Cuisine is primarily European, carrying items from France, Italy, and Belgium. “We carry Italian dinner ware and a variety of pasta makers,” Tina said. The shop also has been helping the war-torn countryside of Ukraine by carrying linens made from Ukrainian flax. “Each time you buy an item you are helping out those people and doing some good,” Tina said.

When men in their lives lamented the lack of interesting and affordable clothing in Bozeman, Nancy Mahoney, and Shara Bailey decided the time was right for a fresh take on men’s fashion. Allōy was their answer. Offering a range of casual streetwear and formal attire, Allōy is for cus tomers seeking reasonably priced clothing and accessories that are comfortable and just a bit out of the ordinary.

The hard-working trio has strived to find new and innovative brands that rein force their mission of ethically-sourced attire. They also offer high-end reclaimed and vintage pieces that reinforce their eco-conscious mission. Although mod est in size, Allōy offers customers a wide range of items: from bow ties to beard oil, and wing tips to wallets. Shara and Nancy note that “whenever possible, we carry locally made products, including art, jew elry, candles, and our own trademarked ‘Yellowstoner’ hoodies.”
When Hattie Rex came up for sale, Nancy Mahoney (owner of Mōka Boutique) jumped at the opportunity. Located at 18 South Willson, the Hattie Rex storefront was just around the corner from Mōka, so it seemed meant to be. “When I learned the store was for sale, I enlisted the help of my son, Aidan, and long-time friend, Shara Bailey, to get the business off the ground.” Aidan is in his early twenties and has a great eye for fashion, so bringing him on was a “no-brainer.” Both professional anthropologists, Shara and Nancy met in graduate school nearly thirty years ago and their bond became indelible while training and running the NYC Marathon in 1997. Nancy recalls when she “called Shara to see if she was interested in part nering up to open Allōy. The answer was an enthusiastic YES!” Shara explains that she “has been spending part of each year in Montana for more than a decade,” and that she and Nancy “had always had entre preneurial plans on the back burner—now they’re on high heat!”

Walk into Allōy and you’ll be met with a super-chill vibe. Customers love the welcoming atmosphere, which Nancy and Shara note are “largely due to our amazing staff.” They observe that “the store attracts a wonderfully diverse range of shoppers in terms of both age and gen der.” In this way, Allōy fills an important gap for downtown shoppers: a gender-free approach to fashion. In fact, it was the idea of melding together people from all walks of life that led to the name Allōy: the combining of elements, which results in fluidity and greater strength.
Andrea More, Mōka’s Operations Manager, came up with the idea and explains, “it was a nod to Hattie’s jewelry and a way to convey our belief that fashion should be less gendered” than the way it is commonly perceived.
