Every month we get to do some fun things while building content, but this month had some added benefits. This month we had the opportunity to go to the bronze foundry and learn about the “Lost Wax” method of casting bronze with Elaine Hanserd of Waterhorse Bronze. The Lost Wax method has been around for thousands of years. The process is fascinating and there are so many steps, each requiring a different skill set. There is a raw coarseness to it that is very appealing, and Elaine’s passion for the entire process is contagious. Once again we had the pleasure of working with Blacksmith Italian. While working with Cory Dragone and his team is great, I must confess, sharing a couple of amazing steaks with my photographer was my favorite part. I grew up in the livestock business, but I had never heard of Piedmontese cattle before Cory told us about them. They are an interesting breed, the bulls being more muscled up than the Charolais bulls we had on the ranch in Grass Range, and the cows remind me a bit of a Jersey. While I am certain that if I had been the chef, the steak would have been far less than what Cory prepared for us, I understand why Cory uses that beef exclusively. It is tender and juicy and both Rico and I took our time savoring every bite. It is a truly Italian breed of cattle, but it is also an exceptional meat for a cowboy connoisseur. Alara opened the Atelier to us for photos and we got to see what a private jewelry design session looks like. While it is a “workroom,” it is luxurious and creates an individualized experience, unlike anything I have seen. The Alara experience in the original location remains the same, and now there is a second option for a whole new level of living Alara. The world-class artisans that we have here in Bozeman as neighbors are worth a visit: I encourage you to explore.

Piedmontese Beef TRULY ITALIAN BEEF IN A TRULY ITALIAN RESTAURANT

If you’re looking for a really good steak look no further than Blacksmith Italian here in Bozeman. That’s right, an Italian restaurant, not a steakhouse! Executive Chef and Co-owner Cory Dragone explains what makes the steak selections at Blacksmith’s so unique. “We use a very special Italian beef that comes only from Piedmontese cattle,” Cory explained. “That’s what makes all the difference.” Dragone has been running the restaurant for eight years now and says that when they first opened, they were very big on using only local beef. But as the restaurant grew and expanded twice, they could no longer compete with bigger restaurant chains to get all the beef they required. That’s when fate stepped in. One of the executives of the Certified Piedmontese company just happened to be vacationing in Bozeman and stopped to have a CONTINUED >

meal at the restaurant. Not long after, the company reached out to Cory to let him know they thought their product would be a really good fit for Blacksmith Italian. “Not only that, but one of their head chefs was actually my roommate when I lived in Napa,” Cory said. “Ben Maides is the best chef in Nebraska and a good friend, so all of this just kind of fell in place just as the restaurant was growing in our second year.” The cattle ranch is in Nebraska and has been in operation since the early 70s. They get their cattle directly from Piedmont, Italy. “They really pride themselves on being a ranch to fork type of business, with all the animals being pasture raised so it’s very humane,” Cory said. If you’re wondering what makes this type of beef so unique, just take a look at the cattle. They are noticeably a heavy and muscular breed but at the same time the muscle fibers remain tender and lean without excess marbling, which makes the meat a much healthier option, without sacrificing any of the flavor. Cory says

he prides himself on using only the best ingredients and he also likes to use local suppliers such as Kimm’s Organic Produce which has been in the area for 100 years, and SporeAttic, a local gourmet mushroom farm. The Certified Piedmontese Company ranch delivers meat to Blacksmith Italian once a week via UPS, and from there, Cory creates some of the famous masterpieces the restaurant has become so well known for. The beef tenderloin is available every day, covered in a 3-day sauce of bone marrow gravy and paired with herb roasted potatoes from Kimm’s. Saturday’s special is the 30 day dry aged ribeye steak and on Fridays you can enjoy Surf and Turf, which includes a Bistro fillet topped with Demi-glace and paired with lobster and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. Blacksmith Italian is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 pm and Cory encourages patrons to make reservations, as with menu choices like this, they definitely stay busy.

So, what is an atelier? Literally, a workspace. The Alara Atelier houses the bulk of Alara’s jewelry manufacturing and crafting machinery, tools, and humans. And while it is a manufacturing space, it is also a place for private design consultation. One can specifically request to have jewelry made (or not) during your appointment. More importantly, this is a place where art, craft, and camaraderie intersect. Since the artisanal workspace is enclosed behind glass walls, the alchemy of the craft performed by human hands is part of the experience, no matter what. But the remaining spaces in this atelier are comfortable living spaces from which one can experience the visual conceptualization of a possible piece from the comfort of a leather rocker; or experience the “hard rock” nature of everything from mineral specimens to precisely-cut rare gems and fine diamonds; all from a sapphire blue, yards- long sofa. Go ahead—put your feet up on the ottoman. That steampunk liquor cabinet? It’s here for you, too. Think both comfy and non-traditional when experiencing this space. You are surrounded by late 18th- and early 19th- century European oils with a story that is personal to Alara’s founder, Babs Noelle. The collection of family paintings is literally the only thing of value that her mother and father were able to bring to the US when they emigrated from Germany in 1954. “Growing up, I was aware that the artwork on our walls was far more sumptuous than the remainder of our décor,” she says. “People always commented on the fanciness upon entering our home. As it turns out, I’ve never had a home myself where this collection seemed to fit. But the moment I saw the Atelier space, I immediately envisioned the paintings hanging on the walls.” Juxtaposed with the paintings are the featured mineral specimens, which bring together everything: the crystals from the earth reminding us of the gemstones we treasure…across from the glassed-in workshop that makes possible the human contribution to the personal and fine decoration we wear. Much like the jewelry created within the space, eclecticism reigns supreme at the Alara Atelier: a rustic farm door slides adjacent to CONTINUED >

a modern, internally-lit, sculpture of an elegant female form. While one meeting table features a natural edge of wormhole black walnut; another artisanal table features swirls of pearlized resin. “This mixture of decorative aesthetics is meant to celebrate not just many different types of beauty, but many different styles of jewelry,” Noelle explains. “And with perhaps a formal event as a possible exception, most folks that embrace the Rocky Mountain West personal style wear a mix of casual and dressy jewels together: a classic, diamond-heavy wedding set is adjacent to a slew of silver bangles…or a gem-encrusted pendant along with bronze earrings.” With the original Alara Jewelry gallery also on Main Street in downtown Bozeman, it begs the question: “Why an Atelier?“ Growth, from both business volume and human perspectives, was demanding an expansion, but how? Pull up stakes entirely, and bank on a different part of

town, and have a larger enterprise, all under one roof? “No way. Downtown runs in my veins,” says Noelle. Much like how she acquired her original location by the fortuitous notice of a “For Lease” sign in its window, her walk to work revealed the new location—at the other end of downtown. The space had a shape more conducive to fulfilling her dream of a “fishbowl studio.” The two locations work in concert, bringing out the best that Alara has to offer. “Our curated jewelry collection of work by seventy-plus designers, found at our original gallery location, is always available for reference and inspiration,” interjects Noelle. “In fact, we encourage people to take a spin through our gallery to point out examples of features they like—or don’t—because we can be sure to make those items available during their custom design appointment at the Atelier.” Noelle firmly believes that the more design details, jewelry art eras, beautiful gems, and fascinating crafting techniques
to which one is exposed, the closer one is to finding a personal, wearable artwork that celebrates the personal joys in life… whether they be individual in nature, or part of a loving bond. “And with over 70 designers in our quiver,” Noelle shares, “I don’t know of many jewelers who can boast more aesthetic variety.” Coming full circle to the atelier concept, the Alara Atelier is soon to be home to a first-in-Montana, nationally-recognized jeweler apprentice program. “What a wonderful and fitting, light-filled space in which to learn the ancient craft of jewelry-making,” beams Noelle. The Alara Atelier is located at 424 E Main Street and is available via private appointment only. In addition to hosting custom design consultations, the Atelier is also where the Alara team offers private curated shopping experiences, gemstone and diamond private viewings, estate evaluations, and jewelry box reviews.

Waterhorse Bronze BRONZE CASTING USING THE “LOST WAX” METHOD
ARTICLE BY JEREMY GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICARDO AQUINO In a day and age where things are increasingly disposable, there is an art form that stands out in its lasting impressions of life and beauty: An art form that can be passed down through generations and enjoyed for thousands of years. Elaine Hansard is a local bronze sculptor in Bozeman who uses the lost wax technique of casting bronze to create sculptures by hand using a process that began in ancient China over five thousand years ago. 3-D printing is replacing handmade items of quality with a high quantity of art pieces that may look nice for a short time, but in a throw away culture, they will not stand the test of time.

She knew from a young age that she wanted to be an artist and incorporate her love of archeology to create bronze sculptures that are inspired by fantasy, mythology, and classic Western themes. Seeing pieces of bronze that were excavated after thousands of years gave her the vision to resurrect this ancient art form that was slowly becoming a thing of the past. Hansard grew up in Bozeman and the nature around her inspired her to create. She took a tour of a local bronze foundry when she was fourteen years old. Hansard realized that she too could be crafting
pieces that similarly might be unearthed thousands of years from now. That vision spurred her to become the hands-on artist she is today, crafting works of beauty that are unique in nature and bringing to life the themes she envisions. Hansard loves working with her hands using the wax technique of casting. In a process that can involve nearly a dozen different artisans to complete, she touches nearly every part of the process. Typically, the maker creates the original sculpture out of wax or clay and then sends it to the bronze foundry for casting, who then returns it to the original designer.

The process is a long and tedious one. A high degree of detail and care goes into complex pieces, with some requiring the original to be cut into multiple pieces then cast and reassembled for the finished piece. Bronze casting is a labor of love as is presenting the finished pieces to those who collect. Although most bronze artists focus on one specialty area, Hansard finds freedom in engaging in multiple expressions through her designs, spanning small to large sculptures and incorporating a variety of patinas on the finished bronzes. At one time she was faced with recovering from a sports injury which did not allow her to work on larger pieces. That’s when Hansard had the idea of creating belt buckles which she uses as a way of introducing people to her greater oeuvre. The depth and scope of Elaine’s artistry can be witnessed in person at one of the local farmer’s markets, galleries, or at her studio in the Emerson Cultural Center. In the life of a mortgage originator, we are constantly trying to help our clients lock in the best rates at the best time. No one could have ever predicted the effects the year 2020 would have on our lives, let alone mortgage interest rates and the housing industry. Every day I have clients asking if and when they should lock, buy, refinance or when will rates go lower? The reality is that it is pretty much impossible to try and time the market and no one has a crystal ball. My advice to clients is always that you need to do what is right for your personal situation today and if it makes sense now then move forward. Don’t try to predict the market or time it. Take low rates as they come and don’t pass up the opportunity hoping for lower rates. Focus on your goals TODAY! With that being said, I would like to comment on the historical trend of rates and where we see them possibly heading. As we enter 2022 we are seeing a slight uptick in rates primarily due to three major items: (1) Inflation- 4th quarter of 2021 the Annual US Inflation Rate was the highest since June of 1982 according to data published in TradingEconomics. Com. (2) Economic Recovery-We continue to see strong

indicators of an improving economy and lower unemployment claims being reported, which again could lead to increasing rates. And finally… (3) Fed Policy ChangesThe Federal Reserve announced that it will slow down its bond purchasing program. Jerome Powell has stated that “with elevated inflation pressures and a rapidly strengthening labor market, the economy no longer needs increasing amounts of policy support.” Over the past few months, we have seen all sorts of spikes and drops in rates; even though many would logically think rates should just be steadily moving up. With the pattern of the U.S. economy showing some signs of recovery, we will have some setbacks here and there, and there are a variety of factors that can still tug on the direction of rates. 2022 will be an interesting year to see where rates really land, but one thing I do know is that interest rates today are still at historical lows compared to where they have been and much of the population is sitting on more equity than they have ever had. Now is the time to reach out and we can help determine if a refinance makes sense for you.
