FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August.

And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! “I have been interested in art since I was a little girl.

I published a magazine, and when I retired from that, my husband supported my desire to start painting.

My friend asked me to paint her pet’s portrait. When it was finished, my friend said, ‘I think you have a new business idea,’ and that was seven years ago.”

Growing up around animals fostered Kimberly’s love for all creatures. Her vibrant paintings and collage portraits feature many different types of animals. For the commissions, Kimberly tries to recreate the image the clients give to her in honor of their beloved pet. “I took a watercolor class at Maryland Hall about six years ago with Lee Boynton, who has since passed away,” Kimberly says. “Lee really taught me to see color, and that was my inspiration to truly see colors in images and in life.

Colors make me really happy.”

The piece named “Princess” was inspired by a baby piglet that she had.

“Growing up around animals all my life developed my fondness for them, and that’s why I love what I do. After my whole journey, I have come back to painting what I love. It is such a joy and a gift.”

WHAT IS ONE OF PETS ON WHEELS’ MOST REWARDING SUCCESS STORIES? The organization received a very generous donation through the mail that did not match anyone from our database. We reached out to the donor to thank him for his donation and find out his relation to the organization. The gentleman detailed that every year on the anniversary of his wife’s birthday, he sends a donation to the organization. Sadly, his wife had passed away from ovarian cancer; however, while she was in hospice, the only thing that would make her smile was a visit from one of our therapy pets. In his words: “Every time those dogs came, she smiled, and to the best of her ability, she got out of bed to play with them. I will never forget that smile that you made happen.” And this is just one of the stories that makes the work we do even more memorable.

Pongos Learning Lab offers birthday parties, open play, clubs, summer camps, and enrichment programs to local schools. Chrissy Rey is the president and founder of Pongos Interactive, a web development and mobile app development company.

We have had insects in acrylic so the kids can examine them with the microscopes and magnifying glasses. There is an Earthquake Table in which kids can build their own structure and see how well it would stand up in an earthquake. There are blocks with blueprints, legos, and dinosaurs,” Chrissy says. “We have a sensory table filled with moon sand, a reading nook, a train table and a lounge area for parents. Our purpose is to let kids explore and play and be exposed to science, technology and engineering.”

During the school year, many clubs are offered, including AR/VR and 3D. The kids will learn to create augmented reality and virtual worlds. The Preschool Robotics Club and the K to 8 Robotics Club expose kids to engineering concepts.

PREPARE TO BE INSPIRED. As we approach the start of a new school year, we want to recognize students who have worked hard, defeated adversity and rose above challenges to continue their education. Despite significant obstacles and financial need that may have prevented them from attending, these courageous students are granted the opportunity to pursue their dreams of going to college through Scholarship America.

The Dream Award is a renewable scholarship program for students in need who have completed one year of successful college education or plan to in the upcoming school year. In 2019, 22 students were offered this award, including two D.C.-area scholars, Sydney Karmen and Cassidy Whitehurst. These students distinguished themselves from more than 2,500 applicants.

Peanut Butter + Oats INGREDIENTS + 1 cup old-fashioned oats + 1/2 cup flour + 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter + 1 egg

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat your oven to 300 F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together oats, flour, peanut butter and egg until combined.

3. Roll your dough out on a flat surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.

4. Cut out your dog’s favorite shapes with cookie cutters.

5. Place your treats onto a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Makes about 36 1-inch diameter treats.
