2019 A Night to Shine The 2019 A Night to Shine event held at Cresthill Baptist Church in Bowie had more than 100 guests and 200 volunteers and caregivers.

The guests were treated to pampering with hair, makeup and a shoe shine along with an entrance on the red carpet. Local businesses donated their services, and many other volunteers made the evening unforgettable. Cresthill.org/nighttoshine

Markward OCCUPATION: Executive Director, Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce Pauline was born in Bowie and has lived in many states throughout the country, until she happily replanted her roots back in Bowie. Pauline is the executive director of the Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce, where she is leading the effort in the Chamber to help businesses grow. She is the program coordinator for Youth Leadership Bowie program designed to prepare future community leaders to meet the challenges of community service.

WHAT DO YOU FORESEE FOR LOCAL BUSINESS GROWTH IN BOWIE? With the growing diversity of Bowie’s population, we have seen a growth in ethnic restaurants such as Samosa, Mezah, Sardi’s and Blue Sunday, to name only a few. Bowie has also had an uptick in entertainment facilities. Joe Clair’s Comedy Club and Party Head Quarters are opening soon.

This is a very exciting time for local Bowie business and our residents. There is something for everyone in Bowie.

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT BOWIE? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BOWIE? Although I’m from Bowie, I spent a few years exploring other cities. I wish more people knew that Bowie is the best place to raise a family and grow a business. It’s good to be home.

Bowie is an oversized Mayberry. I mean that with great affection for this town. Bowie is small enough to feel like we know our neighbors but large enough to still have privacy.

DESCRIBE ONE LIFE LESSON THAT HAS MADE AN IMPRESSION UPON YOU. Every day is a life lesson when raising children, and there isn’t any room for pride. When you’re wrong, admit it.

I worked at almost all the Fortune 500 companies in the Washington, D.C. metro area. I have always been in sales in the top 1 percent with a great success rate. Connecting businesses is a great passion of mine, and I saw a need for this opportunity for local business owners in Bowie to showcase their products and services and to tell their stories. I live here, and I have a keen heart for this area. I love seeing the growth and expansion in this area. It was the perfect time to have this publication start in Bowie.

DESCRIBE ONE LESSON IN LIFE THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED SO FAR. My biggest lesson is a hard one. You are going to get knocked down. You are going to fail at a business or have challenges. The lesson that I learned is to dust yourself off and get back up. Create a new business plan and keep going. You learn from it and keep moving forward.

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT IN THIS OFTEN MALE-DOMINATED FIELD? As an entrepreneur, you must always maintain a high level of persistence. In doing so, you should eventually see business growth. Once your business begins to reach new levels, you must then commit to obtaining the necessary resources to successfully sustain your business.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? The favorite part of my job—or I should say, what inspires me most—is the ability to continually create career and professional development opportunities for my team and then to watch them blossom within their respective areas of expertise.

WHAT LESSON IN LIFE HAVE YOU LEARNED THAT HAS STAYED WITH YOU? When I was younger, my grandmother shared a quote that stuck with me and continues to still resonate: “If a task is once begun, never leave it until it's done. Be the laborer great or small, do it well or not at all.”

“We always talk about Anthony. He was a huge influence on our journey,” Damon says. “Georgia’s mother passed away when she was very young, and her older sister was a huge part of her life. Georgia grew from this experience, and it made her an amazing mother, a strong woman and skilled winemaker.

Winemaking is very much a male-dominated industry, but Georgia is exceptional at what she does.”

The Urban Winery is the only urban winery in the state of Maryland.

“We were running and operating the first urban winery in Maryland and, until recently, the only one in the Mid-Atlantic. We started a great trend,” Damon says. “What is different about an urban winery is that our focus is not agricultural. We are focused on science. An urban winery looks like a chic wine bar. You can explore our boutique wines which we produce on-site. We bring in over 15 to 20 tons of high-quality grapes within a year from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York and California. We try to share our wines in a way that is as down-to-earth and fun as possible. Georgia does the wine pairings, and I sell the bottles. We're a team.”

DMV MUSICAL GROUP RHYMES FEATURING VOCALIST SUMMER DENNIS YOUR BIO SAYS YOU STARTED SINGING AT THE AGE OF 2. WHO HELPED FOSTER YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC? My mom was on the praise team at our church and would sing every Sunday. I used to go to rehearsals with her. It was just something very natural for me. I grew up singing my whole life. Faith & Proof was the first complete body of work that I have been able to do after all these years of singing.

My middle school teacher, Ms. Lackey, made me sing alto even though I was a soprano, and it helped me develop my ear. It was a key moment in developing my technique. She really pushed me. It is much easier to express myself through music. When I write a song or when I perform, I am far more comfortable than talking.

I feel far more connected to people when I am singing.

HOW DID THE BAND GET TOGETHER? My business partner, music director and guitar player’s name is Bill Moore. I actually joined his old band which was a high-energy funk cover band. After about a year, we decided to work on original music, and we ended up getting the album together along with a new band. Faith & Proof was a combination of incomplete songs that he and I wrote over the years and were able to finish together. The other band members are people I have met on all walks of life. I’ve been singing with my backup singer Kam at church for about five years. I met my drummer at a bar when he overheard that I was looking for one, and the rest is history.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE ARTISTS? I am definitely a Beyoncé fan. I have been a Beyoncé fan since Destiny’s Child. Minnie Ripperton is one of my favorites, and I feel that she is not as celebrated as she should be. I have always loved Whitney Houston, and I just recently watched the documentary on her; her life had a lot of tragedy. I really identified with her story, and I hope that I can also continue to rise up as Whitney did. Chakha Kahn is an amazing vocalist. She was super unapologetic, and she was the only girl in her band. I really identify with that, and she was really respected by the men in her band. Diana Ross is my inspiration for commanding respect on the stage. I think to myself, “Be Diana” when it is my turn to be on stage and have the spotlight on me. My mother is also an amazing vocalist who has always inspired me.
