Gonzo Garcia Presented 2023 USTA/USPTA Community Service Award The United States Professional Tennis Association, Inc. (USPTA) presented the 2023 USTA/USPTA Community Service Award to Gonzo Garcia of Boulder, CO. Since 2007, the city has contracted with him for all its Parks and Rec tennis lessons. The 20-year USPTA Professional founded the Gonzo Tennis Academy, where its game-based tennis program focuses on the development of players of all ages.

Museum of Boulder Announces Leadership Change The Museum of Boulder announced the departure of its executive director, Lori Preston. Preston has served as the museum’s executive director since 2019, guiding the nearly 80-year-old organization through its first years at its new location in downtown Boulder. O O ver a couple of draft beers at Upslope Brewing Company about five years ago, Ryan Ognibene and Brad Miles sketched an idea they knew would revolutionize how post-injury runners, active seniors, pregnant women and everyone in between could maximize their fitness potential. Brad, a former professional triathlete with a sales background, and Ryan, an endurance athlete who holds a degree in mechanical engineering, fused their expertise to create Lever, a body weight support system that attaches to a treadmill and removes up to 45 pounds of weight to alleviate stress on joints.

“At this time, no one was doing body weight support in this style,” Ryan says. “There is a 700-pound machine out there that uses air pressure and is prone to breaking down. We simplified it down to 8 pounds and designed it to be much more durable and accessible.”

In the spring of 2019, they crafted their first prototype from wooden dowels and flagpole holders they sourced from Home Depot.

Just a few short months later, their now patented system went to market. Ryan and Brad have made subtle improvements over the years, but overall, the sleek, aluminum

form remains the same. Its lightweight and compact design makes it extremely effective and easy to transport, whether on a plane or to a local gym for those without a treadmill at home. Each system is assembled in and shipped from Lever’s Boulder office. As of this month, Ryan and Brad have sold nearly 2,000 to clients locally and across the globe.

“We have customers all around the world, from Africa to Europe,” Ryan says. “Kenyan runners use it there for their marathon training.”

Although pro athletes are Lever’s core users, the system was created to benefit an array of people, including older customers with knee replacements who want to be able to walk without putting pressure on their lower extremities, and high school cross-country athletes striving to stay dynamic and agile as they train for races. “The system minimizes risk of injury if it’s used consistently,” Ryan adds. “You can use it every day to be proactive in staying healthy.”

A newly released model ($1,449) that’s slightly more compact comes with shorts, a scale to track progress and the Lever mobile app, which connects to Bluetooth and features training and rehabilitation plans. NEIGHBORHOOD In early 2023, a new term to describe a type of beloved local market popping up across American cities entered the zeitgeist: “the shoppy shop”. You’re probably familiar with the type: global pantry goods, one-of-a-kind wines and artisan staples that make entertaining feel, or at least look, effortless.

In November, Boulder got its very own. Perched on the northeast corner of the S’PARK community in central Boulder, Sundry Goods brings a new, affordability-minded, community-driven approach to the trend.

“We've always wanted to open up a little ‘shoppy shop’—something that's approachable and fun, but less cost-prohibitive than others,” explains Sundry team member Jake Novotny. “We think of it as a grocery store, but we like to also think of wine and spirits as groceries and stuff like this,” he says, motioning around the space. “These essentials for a fun dinner party, as staples,” he continues. “It’s a market, a dinner party store, it’s…”

“It’s a full-on one-stop shop,” chimes in the owner, Mackenzie Terzian.

Inside, the wooden shelves that stretch up to the ceiling (handcrafted

by Jake) are as curated as they are stocked, lined with artisan goods sporting colorful packaging. Yet in the in-between spaces, you’ll find the quotidien: dish soap, detergent, batteries.

SUNDRY “It’s everything from toilet paper to tampons to bougie non-alcoholic olive oil martinis to wine anywhere from $9 to $500,” explains Mackenzie. “Well, maybe not quite $9,” she laughs. “Essentially, goods that serve the whole community—agewise, income-wise—just making sure that it's a resource for anyone that needs it.”

At Sundry, community is a key part of the curation.

“We're very much going to be dependent on our community to tell us what else is needed,” adds Sundry team member Mojo Monjack. “We opened with some extra space specifically for people to tell us what they want and need. We want that input from our community, from our guests.”

With a collective background in the food and beverage industry, the Sundry team is also guided by a sense of hospitality.

“Our goal is to have tastings here at least once or twice a week.

We're all coming from the restaurant industry, so we want to be able to do some classes, whether it's how to make certain cocktails or just a wine tasting and some snacks—we really want to be able to create that hospitality within a store,” says Mojo.

“Why not have this fun, sort of experiential thing?” adds Jake.

“We have great music on, and we try to make shopping fun, but also affordable at the same time. We focus on ‘good’ goods and try to do our best with small companies and sustainability. But at the end of the day, we’re focused on the guest that comes in. So we have a little bit of everything.”

For this interview, we went the opposite direction and spent some time learning about Ayurveda, an ancient system of therapies from the Indian subcontinent that has varied and evolved over more than two millennia. Lentine Alexis is a chef, athlete and Ayurvedic practitioner and she walks us through the basics and how this ancient wisdom can serve us in our modern lives.

PEOPLE TALK ABOUT DOSHAS. WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? WHAT IS A GOOD WAY TO LEARN WHICH TYPE ONE LEANS TOWARDS?

Our doshas are like a bioenergetic fingerprint. Our dosha represents the earth elements that are dominant in our mind, body and spirit, and they can act as a map for how we may be likely to respond to experiences, relationships, foods—anything we interact with in our lifetimes.

The doshic explanation runs quite deep. Generally speaking, however, Vata dosha consists of air and ether, the qualities of which are rough, cold, light, mobile and subtle (balanced by smooth, warm, heavy, static and gross). Creatives, athletes (particularly runners), and folx who love diversity, spontaneity and change are typically vata dosha dominant.

Pitta is fire and water—oily, sharp, hot, light, fleshy smelling, spreading and liquid (balanced by dry, soft, cool, heavy and dense). Driven professionals, organized entrepreneurs, athletes,

and folx who like lists, goal setting and achievement are typically pitta dominant.

Kapha dosha is earth and water—steady, moist, smooth, oily, cool and heavy (balanced by mobile, dry, rough, warm and light). Those who dislike routine, are slow to make decisions and are unrushed by the world around them are typically dominant in this dosha. Most of us are dominant in two, rarely we’re tridoshic (which means we have an equal measure of all three).

It can be difficult to know which dosha you are (there’s a quiz on my website!) but in general we want to be watching for these qualities in ourselves—that’s really the litmus test. We all have all of the doshas.

WHAT ARE SOME BASIC EATING/COOKING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EACH DOSHA?

mind, body and spirit would bring outside…we want to do the same inside. Understanding what our doshic constitution is can help us to determine what foods generally agree with us, and which don’t.

But understanding how our beings are impacted by the world outside is just as important.

We want to avoid foods that are similar in quality to the dosha that dominates our being.

So, if you’re a vata, you’d want to avoid foods that are rough, cold, mobile, dry and subtle.

(This would be smoothies, salads, snacks like popcorn and chips and the like.) As a pitta, you’d want to avoid hot and pungent foods, foods that warm the body too much. And as a kapha, you’d want to avoid cloudy, cold and heavy foods.

My stay at A-Frame Club, nestled away in Winter Park, CO, helped me understand the true meaning of “hygge”. A friend of mine adores the word and has tried to incorporate it into our lives for a little over 5 years now. I have no shame in saying that I just didn’t get it. But pulling up to the tucked away parking lot of A-Frame Club and being greeted by an illuminated sign reading “A-FRAME CLUB. KEEP YOUR TIPS UP”, I knew this escape was going to be something special.

“Hygge” (noun) is regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture and is defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being." In essence, it means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm burn of a candle is hygge. Sipping on hot chocolate by the fire is hygge.

A-Frame Club? Totally hygge.

The new hotel brand takes design cues from 1970s American ski culture and the iconic a-frame cabins of that era. This first club in Winter Park consists of 31 modular cabins, with a restaurant and bar in a historic saloon building that sits less than a mile from the base of Winter Park Resort. Constructed by Zeppelin

Development in partnership with Skylab Architecture, the newly constructed cabins sit adjacent to the Fraser River and are all connected by a network of boardwalks that instantly transport guests into a world of solitude, bringing relaxation and refuge after a day of skiing or mountain biking and providing a picturesque mountain escape.

Walking into the cabin itself took my breath away, as I basked in the tall ceilings, beautiful birch wood throughout, and yes, glowing, hygge lighting. I was filled with warmth instantly (the heated bathroom floors may have helped with that a bit).

The mid-century-inspired cabins are adorned with everything needed for a sweet winter night in; a fully stocked kitchenette, a lofted bedroom, a custom Malm fireplace and even a soaking tub.

Vintage furnishings fill the space, with ultra-tall glass windows, letting the natural light cascade onto the birch and cedar panel walls. The amenity touches inside the cabin elevated the comfort level, and made me feel like I was on a secret mountain spa retreat, wearing my cozy Matouk robe with slippers to match. The modern yet cozy cabin rang true to A-Frame Club’s own words: “You experience a better kind of mountain life when you stay with us.”

Along with the meticulously designed cabins, the FrenchAlpine-inspired saloon transports patrons to an apres-ski dream.

Vintage pictures line the walls and soft 70’s dance music fills the restaurant and bar. The restaurant, bar and outdoor patio have a menu filled with locally sourced delicious classics to eat and craft cocktails to pair. I was lucky enough to visit the weekend their holiday decor was put up, filling the saloon with extra added cheer and comfort. I couldn’t keep my eyes off the Christmas tree topped with a firetruck red ski boot as the star. Hygge at its finest.

The vibes curated at A-Frame Club are second to none. The 70s-chic ski aesthetic is fun and refreshing, but not overpowering. It pays homage to a simpler time, with cabins at the base of a ski hill, setting the scene for a spectacular apres-ski experience.

The service was exemplary, reigning true to classic mountain hospitality. It’s intentional. It creates a genuine escape where everything else fades away, except for what’s directly in front of you.

The Foundation That Was Created for Those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Its Upcoming Redesign and Fundraising Gala

IMAGINE! In 1963, parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities started in Lafayette what would become Imagine! to help their kids become active, participating members of their neighborhoods.

“What they were wanting was, at the time, a really radical idea,” says Fred Hobbs, Imagine!’s director of public relations for the last 18 years. “People with developmental disabilities weren't part of their communities. They were literally hidden away.”

The first of Colorado’s 20 Community Centered Boards— or CCBs, nonprofits that organize government-funded programs for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities—Imagine! offers therapeutic, educational, family support and case management services for those of all ages. Last year, over 4,400 people received services from Imagine!, thanks in large part to the support of the Imagine!

Foundation, which fundraises for, and educates about Imagine!’s offerings.

One of these people is the son of the Imagine!

Foundation’s Executive Director David Grimsland. David’s son began receiving services through Imagine! within his first year of life, even before a diagnosis was established.

David’s family has taken advantage of various services

through the years, many of which would not be covered by typical health insurance. When his son recently turned 18, he gained access to adult services, like residential and employment opportunities.

“It’s a dream come true to work for an organization whose mission aligns so closely with my own and supports the community we live in,” David says.

Fred is also moved by the work he does at Imagine!: “I go home at the end of the day, even if it was a rough day, knowing that, at the very least, my work somehow touched someone's life in a way that made it more positive for them. That continues to be the motivator for me.”

Imagine! offers both CCB services–like early intervention, family support and case management services—and direct support services, like job training and placement, recreational activities and behavioral health services. But many organizations only offer one or the other.

Starting July 2024, Colorado’s Case Management Redesign will split Imagine!’s CCB and direct support services. This is because the state is combining CCBs with case management agencies, which offer different programs, often making it difficult for those who qualify for multiple programs to navigate the system.

“In the time I've been here, and I would argue probably in Imagine!’s 60 years, it is the biggest challenge that we've ever faced,” Fred says of the redesign. Imagine! has been busy navigating how to split its services over the last couple of years.

“I think it's done somewhat of a disservice to the population that we serve,” Fred adds. “Instead of being able to focus that passion on: What can we do next? What can we do better? Right now, we have to figure out: What can we do so that this split doesn't completely disrupt their lives?”

While Imagine!’s CCB services will be renamed, its direct support services will keep the Imagine! moniker.

On Feb. 3 at the Marriott in Westminster, the Imagine! Foundation will host its 23rd Imagine! Celebration, a gala that raises nearly half of the foundation’s annual funding. Because a majority of Imagine!’s funding comes from Medicaid, state, county and city funding, it can only be used for certain things.

“It's those funds that are raised that allow us to step beyond,” Fred says.

“We're dealing with human beings, and there's a lot of times when those guardrails don't actually help meet the needs of individuals.”

“It’s a real way to immerse the audience in Imagine!’s mission,” Fred adds of the Imagine! Celebration. “We can’t do what we do without the support of our community.”

“90% of our business is referrals and repeat business because people understand what we offer,” Bill says. “We’ve probably sold half the homes in Boulder, and sometimes we know off-market opportunities because we know people well. We often become lifelong friends. That is really worthwhile because you meet some wonderful people.”

John and Jan Peterson, friends of Bill’s from Texas, used to visit him in Boulder every summer for 20 years. They initially bought two rental properties from the Goodacre Group; then, also through the firm, the Petersons bought their first primary home before successfully selling it and purchasing a larger one. Because of Bill and Tim’s industry knowledge and extensive history in the Boulder area, they chose to refer another friend to Goodacre.

“Bill never pushed us into buying a property,” John says. “He always just gave us guidance and support.”

John adds that every year around Christmas, Bill and Tim take a couple of days to personally deliver New Year’s calendars to their clients’ homes. “That’s just who they are. I can’t give a higher compliment.”

Many Goodacre Group clients are parents or grandparents who move to Boulder for its beautiful location and because they want to be closer to their kids and grandkids. Bill and Tim share this sentiment as active members of the Boulder community (Bill attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship and coached the University of Colorado hockey team; Tim shares that they’re always outside: boating, water skiing, snow skiing, cycling), and as an intergenerational business. Tim’s son, Joe, is currently obtaining his real estate license and plans to join the firm this year.

As a part of Mile Hi Modern, an exciting phase of growth is imminently on the horizon, although the Goodacre Group maintains the same heart and soul it’s had for 50 years. “When you work hard, you naturally progress,” Tim says. “As time went along, dad rose through the ranks in the luxury market to prove himself and establish a great reputation in town. We’re good at listening and understanding, and the satisfaction of helping people is what we enjoy most of all.”

Over the last several years, “Dry January” has become an increasingly popular trend for folks wanting to start the year with a 31-day break from alcohol. Aside from the many health benefits, some simply see this as a test of willpower.

In January 2023, I did a 30-day booze break of my own. After a few days, it’s surprising how simple grabbing a LaCroix or N/A beer can become, in lieu of the real thing. Granted, having a ribeye at Steakhouse 316 is not quite the same without a glass of Burgundy, but it is possible.

Back in mid-September, I decided to take another 30-day alcohol break so that I could be sharp in closing out the business year.

After four weeks, my productivity at work, patience with my kids and sleep quality were so improved that I kept it rolling. One month became two months, and the list of pros vs. cons was very lopsided. I’m not swearing off alcohol altogether, (I did enjoy some Elijah Craig 18-Year Bourbon over Thanksgiving with my brothers-in-law) but this most recent hiatus has shown me a lot in regard to the physical and mental health benefits of keeping things in check.

Everyone has their own journey, and the purpose of this story is to show some alternatives, so here we go!

Untitled Art N/A Italian Pilsner is a crisp and refreshing brew that won’t have you feeling like you just slammed a Kombucha.

An Italian Pilsner is a hoppier version of your standard Pilsner. My buddies and I love this brew! According to Untitled Art’s website, they use membrane filtration technology

which allows them to brew fully-fermented beer and gently remove the alcohol, without losing the aromas and flavors of your favorite styles. All flavor, no alcohol!

While they are a Wisconsin brewery, they are available at most of the larger liquor stores in the area.

My runner-up for the non-alcoholic beer category would probably be Colorado’s very own, Coors Edge. No frills and easy on the wallet.

For the cordial: • Steep dried hibiscus flowers, or hibiscus tea, and a sprig of rosemary in a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Strain and mix in 1 cup of sugar. Let cool.

A Boulder Cycling Destination Offers Year-Round Outdoor Sports Expertise with the Addition of Backcountry Skiing to their Repertoire

Renowned as a geographical focal point for outdoor sports, Boulder offers a unique and dynamic environment that caters to an active lifestyle. Those who live and religiously exercise here know that not only is the Front Range known for its picturesque landscape, but also its passionate, vibrant and close-knit sports community.

Since 1982, starting as a co-op in the back of a Pearl Street grocery store, Full Cycle has not only served the active Boulder community but has helped to build and foster the camaraderie that Boulder’s athletic community is known for. From its humble beginnings to the present, Full Cycle has been more than just a business. It's been a place where athleticism, outdoor exploration and a love of outdoor sports converge.

Just as the sports community in Boulder has morphed and grown, Full Cycle has stayed malleable and grown with it. Their location, ownership and concept have all changed over time, but Full Cycle continues to stay true to its vision of being a haven for outdoor sports aficionados and providing excellent customer service. With the original concept downtown on Pearl St focusing on mountain and commuter biking, the business slowly morphed into an institution for all things cycling-related. The move to a bigger space on 30th St in 2020 came with the opportunity to continue to expand its services, including the addition of the Full Cycle Café and Bar, a much-needed third space for athletes to converge over a pre- or post-ride coffee or beer, all within the inspirational atmosphere of a shop with a focus on expertise and innovation. In 2020, Full Cycle merged with Colorado Multisport, one of the country’s premier shops focusing on the needs of triathletes and performance road cyclists.

This past September, Full Cycle made the move to become a year-round multi-sport space with the addition of an impressive array of brands catering to ski touring (also known as uphill skiing, backcountry skiing, skimo, etc.). This was not only a strategic CONTINUED >

financial move for Full Cycle, now being able to obtain a steadier stream of business when many cyclists store their bikes for the season, but also an opportunity to strengthen the local sports community in a completely different market. “What we’re doing is different than traditional retail,” says Russ Chandler, Full Cycle’s owner/general manager. “It’s called ‘shop-in-shop’. This looks like one big bike shop with skis, but in fact, it’s a bike shop that has six little ski shops in it.” Russ goes on to explain that other than buying products directly from top brands (Dynafit, Scarpa, DPS Skis, Pomoca, Ortovox, Phantom Glide and Hestra Gloves), these companies all lease separate spaces in Full Cycle for the season and maintain their own separate product selection, keeping inventory fresh and new. Brand experts also consistently hold informative events in the space once or twice a month. Dynafit is hosting both a Backcountry Skiing 101 event on January 9 and an introduction for those who want to tackle the Grand Traverse, Colorado’s premier backcountry ski racing event that spans from Crested Butte to Aspen, later in the month. DPS’s head of product will be sharing tips on their advanced products at Full Cycle on January 30. All events are free and start at 6 pm.

With the Full Cycle team moving toward a more interdisciplinary approach to outdoor sports, they continue to leverage their expertise and personal passions to assist all levels of outdoor athletes. Just like many active Boulderites, the sales team changes their focus on their own means of exercise with the seasons.

The perspective of getting more people excited about getting outdoors and exercising year-round to fight off the SADs (Seasonal Affective Disorder), when the days get shorter and the nights get longer, is eye-opening.

The excitement is evident when discussing the retail changes, but Full Cycle also notes the parallels that each sport has to offer. “I think of backcountry skiing compared to other skiing a little bit like mountain

biking compared to road biking,” says Russ. “You’re going in the backcountry in varying levels of steepness, up and down. It generally attracts the type of people who really like to get away from the cities and the madness. It’s that year-round outdoor connection that ultimately helps sustain your mental health.”

“I think it’s also pretty social,” adds Caitlin Standifer, a creative strategist and marketing manager for Full Cycle, “You’re spending 80 to 90% of your time walking up a hill and you should be doing it with somebody. It’s a really social activity.” Russ amusingly interjects, “You can be each other’s therapist as you’re going up the hill.”

As Full Cycle embraces an interdisciplinary approach to outdoor sports, the team's dedication to helping individuals of all levels aligns perfectly with the Boulder community’s ideology of promoting an active and balanced lifestyle. Kairos Wellness Collective's Holistic Approach to OCD and Anxiety Treatment Allows Clients to Find Empowerment and Regain Control of Their Lives

Living Well the Kairos Way Living well is a common creed among Coloradans; it’s also the foundational sentiment behind the mission of Kairos Wellness Collective.

With headquarters in Boulder and a satellite location in the Capitol Hill district of Denver, Kairos offers customized plans and evidence-based treatments for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and anxiety. Lead therapist Natalia Aíza and her partner Matthew Williams have assembled a team of specialized therapists where the region previously lacked such care.

Founded as a shared vision for compassionate treatment, the team leans on their own lived experiences with OCD, fueling a palpable passion for their clients. “OCD can be very isolating,” the duo shares, underscoring the empathy of treatment at Kairos. “We get it.”

OCD is complex and can present in many different ways. A big goal of the center is to raise awareness about the ways this condition can impact daily life, share the types of treatment

available and provide education for those living closely with someone suffering from OCD. With the peace of a tranquil garden, the Kairos facility is warm and welcoming upon entry. A soothing aesthetic unites each of the uniquely furnished meeting rooms with comforting tones and intentional decorative touches. The center has seen tremendous success in its not yet two years of operation in the community. Beyond their Boulder location, Kairos operates an office in the Cherry Creek neighborhood of Denver with plans for an expanded presence in the city and hopes for a third location in Fort Collins.

Kairos embodies the meaning of their name–a Greek word used to describe the crucial moment of rightness and opportunity for action. Their approach is gentle and sincere, paired with a practical sensibility aimed at empowering clients to reframe their mindsets and regain control over their lives.

While OCD can take a variety of forms, there is hope for treatment at all levels. Kairos understands that there is no one right path to wellness and offers services in ERP, CBT, psychedelic therapy and more. Their collaborative team works to tailor solutions for clients that offer rehabilitation and discharge rather than continuous reliance on care. Additionally, their holistic philosophy emphasizes the connection between the mind’s cognitive state and the body’s physical reactions. "Our goal,” Natalia explains, “is to recalibrate responses to focus on real safety and well-being rather than the fictional dangers suggested by OCD.” Natalia and her team know this approach works because they’ve walked through it themselves. "I’ve personally had every category of OCD over the course of my lifetime,” she shares. “When you have that lived experience, you also have a sense of self-awareness.” The firsthand experience with OCD among Kairos’ staff serves as a driving force behind their care for clients and confidence in treatment.

The center’s presence in the local community has been met with a clamoring of gratitude. As they scale, commitment to their culture and personalized approach remains steadfast. With plans for expanded locations and presence, dreams of a Kairos Retreat Center are discussed.

While OCD diagnosis and treatment is still a burgeoning field of medical study, Kairos is eager to enhance the lives of its clients while furthering the effectiveness of its field. The team is not only raising local awareness but also actively participating in the mental health community by sharing their treatment protocols with practitioners at the International OCD Foundation. Their ongoing success stories and innovative approach drive them to maintain their momentum and deliver exceptional care.

Patient successes are celebrated among the Kairos team. Matthew explains how treatment can offer clients a sense of empowerment beyond mere relief. “It’s that very real moment when a client is like, ‘Wow, I got a part of my life back. I can do this.’”

Perfect transitions where many colors meet

“We were working with a designer, and we had areas where 3 colors met at one place. That was really difficult.

It’s a very open floor plan. There aren’t a lot of walls for a good transition from one color and finish to the other. And we used at least 3 different interior finishes. One place in particular, the rec room meets a hallway, meets the stairs. And the stair wall is curved no less. 3 different colors with, yes, subtle differences, but enough where it could look odd and your eye would go right to it. Not sure exactly how but Maurer nailed it. Their experience really showed in deciding the best place to stop a color and start another. Such an amazing job. Their crews are very professional, unobtrusive, respectful of your privacy and your house. They put the shoe covers on, put down plastic all the way from the entry to where the work is. Just really nice guys, great to work with. Once they were gone it was like they weren’t even there, except the new, beautifully painted walls.”
