Bidding Summer Adieu

Somehow, someway, September is here!

It seems like summer starts right when you need it most—when we’re all burnt out on alarm clocks, school and schedules, and longing for spontaneity, flexibility and childhood delight. We never know what each summer will bring, but we just know that we’re ready. And regardless of what it holds, we know that it doesn't disappoint.

After the novelty wears off, summer can start to feel a bit never-ending, and we all might find ourselves longing for a schedule and routine (hey! I said might). To all the parents—you did it! The long, hot days filled with strollers, diapers, floaties and gallons of sunscreen are almost past you. Regardless of what your summer held, I hope it slowed you down and you were able to soak it all in.

Summer seems to know when we need it most, and when it’s time to move on. So with this issue, we bid our sweet summer a sweet farewell. Until next year, when we’re anxiously waiting for its return!

Here’s to a summer filled with adventures, sunny Colorado days, good friends & lots of good food. Thank you for letting us fill these pages with all of the things we love about our Boulder community and beyond.

COLORADO GOLDEN HOUR

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | SPORTS + RECREATION
46

In between blowing up our paddleboards on Lake Dillon and clipping on our ski boots, we experience the magical season where the colors of aspen trees change over before the winter. People from all over rush to find the best places in the state for leaf peeping—a term you don’t often hear outside of Colorado. There is a sense of urgency to find the best spots before the leaves quickly turn from green to yellow. This urgency creates traffic and fills parking lots but also brings an excitement to Colorado that we patiently wait for every year. Here are some lesser-known spots to experience Colorado’s golden hour.

GRAND MESA

Make it a weekend trip by heading west toward Colorado’s famous vineyards in Palisade and stop to admire Grand Mesa’s aspen meadows. This area is beautiful year-round, but the fall colors bring something extra and exciting. The Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway has panoramic views to enjoy the changing colors. After some fantastic leaf peeping you can head over to Palisade for some peaches and wine or go mountain biking in Fruita.

TWIN LAKES (INDEPENDENCE PASS)

Whether you are camping in Twin Lakes or looking for a fall drive, yellow leaves will surround you as you drive up Independence Pass toward Aspen. On your way you can stop at 12,095 feet above the Continental Divide, one of the highest paved mountain passes in the U.S., for vast and unique views. You are also a short drive away from Leadville, which is known for its fall colors as well.

KENOSHA PASS

Just over an hour away from Boulder and Denver, Kenosha Pass provides spectacular views of an aspen grove within the famous Colorado Trail. Don't be discouraged by the initial droves of leaf peepers at the start of the hike as the crowd typically disperses around a mile in, allowing for serene hiking among lush trees. This is also a great option if you are looking for vibrant fall colors without leaving the car by driving along Highway 285.

CONTINUED > 47 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER SEPTEMBER 2023
“Whether you are camping in Twin Lakes or looking for a fall drive, yellow leaves will surround you as you drive up Independence Pass toward Aspen.”

RED CLIFF

Nestled between Eagle-Vail and Leadville is the small town of Red Cliff, Colorado. You can travel across the historic Red Cliff steel arch bridge and pull alongside to marvel at the fall foliage. Form there, you can venture from Cross Creek Trail up to Surprise Lake. This hike will not only gift you with golden leaves but mountain views and a peaceful river on your journey up to the lake. It is a unique stop away from the crowded hikes and leaf peeping in Vail. Be sure to stop by Rocky Mountain Taco in Minturn on your way out and send pictures to your friends and family from your fall adventure.

MARBLE

Pack your car snacks and road trip the three and a half hours to see Marble, Colorado's aspen trees. Be sure to drive along Highway 133 and head to the top of McClure Pass to marvel at the changing colors. Once you hit the town, you can walk along Beaver Lake State Wildlife Area. Continue to gaze at the fall leaves from Slow Groovin BBQ’s patio with a delicious, local meal.

GOLDEN GATE CANYON STATE PARK

While we can’t call it off the beaten path, Golden Gate Canyon State Park is a leaf-peeping staple and is only 40 minutes away from Denver and Boulder. It is perfect for a quick trip from the city to get out and go see some fall colors. Get there early (like really early) to get a parking spot and remember to pay the park’s admission fee before your day of hiking. Once in, head up to Fraser Meadow via Mule Deer Trail or Coyote Trail to take in the best that the park has to offer. After the hike, don’t forget to stop at Panorama Point to refuel with a granola bar and take in the vista views of the Continental Divide.

GARDENING TIPS WITH ECHTER’S

LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR A great GROWING SEASON

MUST SEE | LOCAL
SERVICES
52

Whether you’re regularly harvesting veggies from your garden or simply enjoying the ever-changing sights and smells around your neighborhood, summer is a time of bloom. As the end draws closer, you might be looking at your green space and thinking…what now? I sat down with Julie Echter, store manager of Echter’s, to get her gardening tips for late summer and early fall, and there are plenty of planting options, even with our relatively short season here in Colorado.

In the short term, you can add some color to your outside planters and garden beds with mums and pansies. They prefer cooler temperatures and can even handle some of the early freezes. You can also plant lettuce, spinach and radishes if you’re hoping for one last harvest, as they’re relatively quick to pop up. Early fall is also a great time for planning, and she has a mantra to help guide you.

Julie says, “The right plant in the right place.”

In short, the better suited a plant is for its environment, especially in our high desert climate, the less work they end up being. She’s noticed an increase in xeriscaping, with customers moving towards low water need plants, and sees time savings as a major benefit, along with the positive environmental impact.

CONTINUED > 53 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER SEPTEMBER 2023
MUST SEE | LOCAL SERVICES 54

“I think people have busy lives and probably don’t have the time or energy to baby plants all the time,” Julie says.

She recommends using Plant Select as a resource for finding plants that thrive in the Rocky Mountain region. Julie also encourages mixing perennials, vegetables, annuals and evergreens to create spaces that bloom during different parts of the growing season, ensuring your garden is beautiful and colorful throughout.

As you create a plan for the next growing season, there are plenty of things you can and should plant in the early fall. For example, daffodils and tulips are actually fall bulbs, so plant them this year if you want that pop of color next spring. It’s also a great time to put perennials, trees, and shrubs in the ground. They just need to establish a root system before the ground freezes, and plenty can do that relatively quickly.

Fall is also an important time for maintenance. Julie recommends removing

dead plant material from garden beds, to avoid diseases remaining dormant there through the winter. Similarly, if you’re planning to bring potted plants, like hibiscus, inside for the winter, make sure to spray them for bugs and diseases first to help keep your houseplants safe.

Another pest Julie has seen entirely too much of this year is the Japanese Beetle, and the fall is an ideal time to treat your grass with grubGONE! to help stop them in their grub phase. You should also plan to winterize your lawn, to help it go dormant and give it some nutrients, and can even reseed in the fall.

If this is all sounding like Gardening 401 when you were hoping for a 101, worry not! Julie has several fall classes coming up and trains the staff to help gardeners of all skill levels.

“That’s one of my favorite parts of the business…helping people who are new to it,” Julie says.

“I’ve probably been doing sculpture all my life,” says Scott Osborne, a Colorado native and Boulder-based artist.

Leaving a background in international business and the fashion industry, Scott's true passion lies in creating with his hands. For more than two decades, he has dedicated himself to his artistic pursuits in the studio.

Scott's name recently made local headlines when he donated a piece to the Museum of Boulder, but he prefers to keep the focus on his art rather than himself.

The sculpture, dedicated just this summer, is a storied work created in remembrance of the ten lives lost during the King Soopers shooting that devastated the Boulder community in 2021.

Amidst the pandemic, Scott faced the loss of his mother as well as the loss of his art studio and many materials—just two days apart from each other. Among the rubble, lay the base of the original memorial sculpture he’d been working on.

“Working on the sculpture,” he says, “kept me thinking and going in a positive direction.” The loss was devastating, but ever-resilient, Scott began to rebuild immediately. He established himself in a new space just two miles north of the city where he continued his work.

Now, the finished sculpture adorns the corner of Broadway and Pine Street in front of the Museum.

The piece is simple at first glance, yet dramatically precise with sharp lines and clean edges exhibiting a mathematical complexity. Its rusted brown sides support a polished, reflective top glistening upwards towards the sky. The sandblasted cubed base is etched with the names of those lost.

“I had this vision of these perfect facets, kind of like a gemstone with a rough exterior but then making it look as though it had been cut in half or broken where you see what’s on the inside,” Scott says. Ten facets were crafted in honor of each life lost during the shooting.

He recalls hearing the sirens of the first responders for hours. The aftermath of the incident brought the community together in a way that moved him. “I wanted to give something of beauty to the community,” he says. “Because if we forget things like this, there will never be change.”

The final sculpture was brought to the Museum in June of this year. Scott installed the piece himself.

Preferring to work in solitude and often at the commission of private clients, this is his first work of art to be on public display. For Scott, the location of his sculptures is less important than the integrity of the artwork.

In the wake of such loss, he feels power in coming together as a community to offer hope for a better way forward. “It was an honor to do this,” he says.

BOULDER-BASED SCULPTOR, SCOTT OSBORNE, TALKS ART, MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION

There’s an inspiring depth to the passion that exudes from Scott's gentle demeanor. A still strength can be felt in his voice—a delicate pairing of quiet passion and creative energy.

Pulling from his experience in fashion, design and architecture, his work is an amalgamation of various inspirations into original, expressive forms. His artistic philosophy follows the idea that less is more, creating timeless designs with geometric precision where sharp, clean lines meet crisp edges.

His favorite material to work with is statuario, a smooth white stone imported from Italy. “It’s a clear marble,” he explains. “Almost pure light.”

Originally from Colorado, Scott spent time living abroad in Melbourne and Cairo where he was inspired by the variety of

architecture and design elements that contribute to his artistic vision today. After many years in the corporate world, he’s happy to have returned stateside and dedicate his energy to the artist that was always within.

Looking ahead, Scott intends to continue his work, bettering himself and his skill. “I just want to keep creating,” he states. “Art is about contributing to something bigger.”

His message is simple yet carries a profound depth.

It’s Scott's desire that his art speaks beauty to people, offering a positive message of inspiration and optimism, inviting people to a deeper level of thought and consideration.

He acknowledges the level of courage required to create. Scott shares that when it comes to art, not everyone will like it, but that’s not the point. He directs his focus on the artistic expression and connection with those who find something positive in it.

“Art is for the people who enjoy it,” Scott says. “It’s about creating beauty for beauty’s sake.”

Scott Osborne's memorial sculpture can be viewed at the Museum of Boulder on Broadway, standing in honor of those who will never be forgotten, inspiring a community that came together in hard times, and calling for an optimistic way forward.

Centro Mexican Kitchen

OPEN 17 YEARS, THIS STAPLE BIG RED F RESTAURANT PARTNERS WITH A NEW CHEF TO OFFER A TRADITIONAL TASTE OF MEXICO

When Chef Lalo (Lalo is a nickname for every kid named Eduardo in Mexico) Covarrubias was a kid in Guadalajara, he wanted to be a mechanical engineer like his dad. As he got older, his attention turned towards cars and being a mechanic. To afford his desire to buy a car, he started cooking at 14 and the rest, at his young age of 34, is history still in the making.

Chef Lalo got his first taste of the modern food of Mexico working at EIKTE in Guadalajara under Chef Casiano Reyes. It was under Chef Reyes while Lalo was in his late teens that he learned how to work, how to hustle and how to cook soulful Mexican cuisine that would open many doors for him.

One of those doors was an invitation to cook at the G20 Summit for presidents and prime ministers from all over the world, held in Las Cabos, Mexico, in 2012. Lalo made such an impression at that event he was invited to be a part of a new fivestar marina hotel & resort opening in San Jose Del Cabo. This adventure was short lived as Hurricane Manuel absolutely crushed that lower part of the Baja Peninsula - dashing all plans of the new property under construction as well as Lalo’s dream job. Never daunted, Lalo returned to Guadalajara where he became the personal chef for the family that owned the Corona beer brand. Two years later, a hurricane struck that family as well in the

form of a divorce, and Lalo took a job on the third largest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet, the Independence of the Seas. Lalo was then recruited by well-known Guadalajara Chef Paco Ruano to go work for his friend Chef Javier Plascencia at his first U.S. restaurant, Brasero in San Diego. Lalo took the job as Head Chef at Brasero where both Brasero and Chef Javier were nominated for a James Beard Award in 2017.

Dave Query, chef/owner of Centro says, “It is a small world, full circle, hey look, there’s Kevin Bacon behind that tree story that brought Chef Lalo to us at Centro this last April.”

While watching Super Bowl XLIX in Rosarita, Mexico, Dave and his wife Dana met Chef Javier in 2015 on Javier’s back porch overlooking the famed surf break K39. The three hit it off and Chef Javier invited Dave and former Big Red F Chef Jamey Fader to come to Valle de Guadeloupe for dinner at Javier’s incredible Finca Altazano as well as Erizo in Tijuana and Jazamango in Todos Santos. Dave and Javier became friends and then partners in Query’s 20-year-old LOLA Coastal Mexican restaurant for several years. Chef Javier recommended Lalo as the head chef of LOLA, which he was, before Covid came to town…uninvited.

Centro was opened at 950 Pearl Street by Chef Dave Query in 2006 after he had closed the party packed, rum-fueledRhumba, which he had operated in that same location since 1999.

“Rhumba was like that friend you knew from childhood who always got you into trouble when he came to visit as an adult. We wanted to do something more food focused. We had a huge party on Bob Marley’s Birthday on February 6th, closed Rhumba, did a world wind remodel working around the clock, and opened Centro six weeks later,” says Dave.

“What I am really focusing on is serving Mexican-Mexican food as opposed to Mexican-American food,” says Chef Lalo.

“Mexican food is not what you find in the resorts or on the strip in Cabo or Cancun. That’s the Americanized version, geared for tourists. The passion and the depth of food is in the hands of a group of Mexican chefs all over my country, cooking from our hearts. It’s tribal. We cook with a level of heat (temperature) that Americans associate with burnt, and that we look at as umami.”

“There is a depth of flavor and intelligence of heat (spice) that you don’t often find in restaurants in the US serving Mexican food. That is where we are headed at Centro,” says Dave.

“Just yesterday, Lalo made some fresh ice cream using burnt tortillas. He ground the tortillas into the anglaise base and spun it in the ice cream maker. It was incredible. This is being served on top of a sweet potato brulee. There is a no-rules, have fun, be daring & adventurous movement happening in these Mexican kitchens. Heavy Mediterranean (Med-Mex) nuances, Asian ingredients, non-traditional cooking methods. What is making this Modern Mexican food so delicious and memorable is not being stuck in what Americans have made this cuisine into which I stand guilty of as well, until recently.”

Dave says of Lalo, “I hope he does what’s in his heart, what’s in his gut, and he just cooks from his belly and from his soul. No rules, no barriers, delicious and memorable. That is Mexican food.”

Audi continues to display its commitment to electrification with the rebranded e-tron SUV, now the 2024 Q8 e-tron. While the vehicle's appearance closely resembles its predecessor, it got a significant performance upgrade. The Audi Q8 e-tron’s improved technology, driving dynamics and overall design position this model at the top of its ranks among new car releases.

Audi’s new logo on the front of the Q8 e-tron's bumper is black, white and two-dimensional, rather than three-dimensional chrome. It's also backlit, accentuating the four interlocking rings during evening and night driving.

With two electric motors, the Audi Q8 e-tron’s rear one has more coils than previous models for improved efficiency: an estimated all-electric range of up to 285 miles.

With a fast-charging speed of 170 kW, the Audi Q8 e-tron can charge in around 30 minutes. These charging capabilities, combined with the new 114 kWh battery, mean this car drives faster and further than previous models. With boost engaged, the Audi Q8 has 402 horsepower and can go zero to sixty miles per hour in 5.4 seconds.

ORANGE WINE

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS POPULAR WINE CHOICE

Sommelier Carlin Karr is the wine and beverage director for Frasca Hospitality Group. She not only leads a team of 10 full-time sommeliers, but she’s also responsible for all the beverage programs at four restaurants in Boulder and Denver. She sits down with us to answer our questions about a wine that’s been having a moment.

CULINARY CREATIONS | FOOD + BEVERAGE

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT ORANGE WINE IS? WHAT MAKES IT ORANGE?

Carlin Karr: Simply put, it is the skins that make orange wines orange. “Orange,” or macerated wine, is wine made from white wine grapes with the skins in contact with the juice during fermentation, just like red wine. In contrast, traditional white wine is made from white grapes, but prior to fermentation, the grapes are gently pressed off of their skins, separating the skins from the flesh, therefore little to no color or tannin is imparted in the wine. This process is the same as most rose wine, but rose wine is made from red grapes. So from a winemaking standpoint, orange wine is the red wine of white grapes and rose wine is the white wine of red grapes.

WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?

CK: The flavor of a given orange wine depends on how it’s made, the grape varieties used and how long the juice is in contact with the skins (or maceration length). Often, orange wines are more concentrated, with ripe stone fruit and rich citrus flavors as well as earthy undertones. The best examples smell like peach or orange marmalade but taste completely dry on the palate, with no residual sugar. The time spent on its skins provides tannic structure to the wine, much like red wine.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN WE SEE THE LABEL

“NATURAL” ON A WINE BOTTLE?

CK: The term actually means nothing, technically speaking. Natural wine is more of a cultural

Interested in Trying Orange Wine?

movement without any parameters or guidelines. The core and most common ethos of ‘natural’ wine is “nothing added and nothing removed” — meaning no addition of sulfur, fining agents, etc. and no filtration.

Though well-intentioned, these wines if not made with precision and great care most often have flaws. When making wines with little to no control, mistakes can happen. And since economics play into winemaking, some wines get released to the public that could be considered flawed (or in the least bit hiding varietal character and a sense of place). Many natural producers have increased in quality dramatically over just a few vintages, however, it’s important to realize that “natural” has nothing to do with farming standards or requirements, and only refers to winemaking.

Another important factor is that sulfur is a natural byproduct of winemaking, so no sulfur wine is nearly impossible. Sulfur is critical to preserving wine, stabilizing wine and making wine consistent for fluctuations in temperature like making the trip overseas or just across states. Sulfur is also found in so much of the foods we consume.

IS ORANGE WINE A TREND OR HERE TO STAY LIKE ROSÉ? WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S

GAINED SUCH POPULARITY?

CK: I think it is both a bit of a trend and here to stay. The funky, poorly made versions are likely to pass but the best versions are here to stay.

“Orange wine pairs well with white meats like pork and roast chicken, prosciutto, speck, green olives, as well as leafy greens which are usually tricky to pair with wine like kale, broccoli, and collard greens,” - Carlin

Look for orange/macerated wines at both Frasca and Pizzeria Alberico.

“Often, orange wines are more concentrated, with ripe stone fruit and rich citrus flavors as well as earthy undertones.”

“ALLTHEWHILE , T HATLONGLOST HIKE IN THEALPSWAS S TILL ONHER MIND.”

Twenty years ago, in the mountains of Red River, New Mexico, a nine-year-old Carley Rutledge made her way above the treeline to Wheeler Peak for the very first time. This embedded a true love into her soul: hiking. Hiking Wheeler was a coming of age moment for the Texas-born Rutledge kids and after that day, Carley could not be stopped. This love of the outdoors and taking the mountains step by step led her all over the world, and as fate would have it, landed Carley as my next door neighbor in Libby Hall at the University of Colorado Boulder. I gained a new best friend that first move-in day in 2013 and every day since, I have watched

in awe as Carley’s adventurous spirit fueled her every move…but there was one hike that she could never quite get out of her head.

Sylvia Bussey, a native Austrian living in Texas, was Carley’s high school Spanish teacher. She was planning a trip for a group of students to take them all the way to the tiny alpine town of Mayrhofen, Austria, to set out on a three day trek over a glacier and into Italy in the Zillertal Alps. You bet it, Carley was the first one to write her name on that list. However, Carley was called on a different path that year when she was diagnosed with stage IV Ewing Sarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer that halted her

hiking adventure through the Alps. After a relapse in 2012, Carley participated in a cutting edge vaccine trial that put her cancer in remission for eight years, allowing her to once again return to her adventuring roots in Boulder and beyond. During our college years, I watched in awe as she set out to study in the Galapagos Islands and South Africa, where she cage-dived with Great White sharks and did not blink twice before jumping off of the highest commercial bungee jump in the world, traveled to Alaska, Belize, Ecuador and everywhere in-between…and the list goes on.

As our friends witnessed all of this, we came to learn that Carley lived on a different clock than the rest of us. She didn't feel she had an option but to adventure; the time was always now.

All the while, that long lost hike in the Alps was still on her mind. It was only a matter of time before she had to make it happen. In the summer of 2019, Carley made that hike a reality when she visited Austria with her dad, John, and their family friends Wyatt and his dad, Dave. They had the adventure of a lifetime.

When Carley returned home, she would talk endlessly about the hike to her family and closest friends, and really anyone who was willing to listen. From the Austrian landscape, to the rich history, to the hüttes they stayed in, their mountain guide, the cows, the food, the beer and on and on and on. The trip was deemed her best adventure yet.

When 2020 rolled around, the outdoors became a safe haven for so many of us, including Carley. In a twist of fate, during the same hike she did back in Red River, Carley began having back pains. The back pains led to the discovery that her cancer had returned, and this time it was in her spine. After four

LINGYOU,IT WA S TRUEMAGIC

spinal surgeries, relearning to walk multiple times, and don't you worry—at least three scuba dives and more adventures, Carley’s battle sadly came to an end in November 2021.

Her adventurous spirit did not.   While there’s no right way to grieve your best friend and sister, we thought, What better way than to follow in her footsteps on her favorite hike she ever did? The goal was to plan a trip for eight people: Carley’s brothers, Blake and

Grant, their partners, Ali and Kristen, myself and Carley’s two other best friends, Monica and Jenny. Some of us trained for months, others hiked once the weekend before.

Hiking in Austria was a vastly different experience than the Rockies we knew in Colorado.

We set out on our hike from the town of Mayrhofen, sitting at a mere 2,077 ft. in elevation, which Grant joked was even lower than Lubbock, Texas. We hit our

highest elevation at 11,050 ft. on Schwartzensfein Peak. Lubbock jokes aside, climbing 9000 feet in 2 days was no easy feat. Our preparation methods differed vastly from the local hikers. Where the Coloradans packed 3 gallons of water, the Austrians packed 1 liter. The scarce amount of hütte-provided lunch sandwiches perplexed us. By Austrian definition, the only necessities are hiking poles and sturdy boots.

This disparity became apparent when Sylvia suggested we take a “hydration” break and enjoy some radlers on the way. Highlighting yet another difference in hiking methods, we typically drink beer after we summit.

The radler-induced second wind led us past majestic cows, blooming wildflowers, roaring rivers and lush hills. Hills, that one would say, were alive with music. I’m telling you, it was true magic. It wasn’t long before we laid eyes on our first homestead—the incredibly beautiful and historic Berlinerhütte. The Berlinerhütte is one of the oldest throughout the Zillertal Alps, dating back to the 19th century, when the hütte system was first being established. The construction of huts in the area was driven by the need for shelter and logistical support for shepherds, travelers and traders navigating through the challenging alpine terrain, but over the years, it has become a haven for hikers and

skiers to make sure that no matter where they are on their journey, there’s a safe place to sleep if the weather turns. But this place is way more than just shelter; it’s a community. It’s a community with a damn good restaurant and one of the most spectacular views to sit and admire after a long day’s hike. It was everything Carley made it out to be.

It was here that we met the wise mountain guide that Carley had spoken so highly about, Stefan. His English was sparse, but we were still able to have a conversation about life and loss. It was due to Stefan’s deep understanding of grief that he rearranged his commitments to guide us the same way he had guided Carley four years prior. He shared his own grief with us, and recalled Carley’s humor, spirit and determination.

The next morning, we began our 4600-ft.-incline across a glacier to Schwartzensteinhütte before sunrise. With our pockets full of stolen breakfast food to fulfill our lack of lunch, we zigzagged through snow and ice until the glacier’s apex came into view. With our ropes, crampons and harnesses on, we followed in Carley’s footsteps to the ultimate summit.

It was in moments like these that I felt Carley all around us. As butterflies swirled around us, we looked into the distance, seeing the view that Carley had always wished for us to see.

THE STUDIO (BOULDER) BRINGS NEW MEANING TO "WORK HARD, PLAY HARD"

Creatives, Hard Workers and Community, Oh My!

LOCAL’S CHOICE | PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

“I don’t know if you’ve heard of the concept of your ‘third place,’” William Goodrich, or Bill, asked me, and I hadn’t. “Some people go to church, some people go to a pub. We’re creating something of a second and third place in one. You come here to work, but you also come to interact with your community. And I’m not sure other co-working spaces provide that.”

The concept of “the third place” refers to the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace, something that sociologists have deemed an extremely important aspect of social well-being. Talking to Co-founder Bill and Director of Operations Rebecca Schwager, they have bridged the gap between your second and third place—making it one at The Studio (Boulder).

The Studio (Boulder) describes its inception as a response to seclusion. As a place for creative entrepreneurs, freelancers and professionals, The Studio (Boulder) has grown into one of the most vibrant and dynamic professional communities in Boulder. Initially a velodrome (an indoor bike arena), a third of the space served as an art studio for Bill’s Co-founder Jen Lewin when they first moved in. The rest of the space was a co-working and event space until Jen’s move to New York. Since then, The Studio’s space has evolved uniquely. “It was very industrial,” says Bill. During their total buildout in 2013, their team reconfigured the mezzanine, moved some stairs around, built all of the offices, workshops, bathrooms and kitchen, which is now considered the heart of the space.

“Back in 2013, Jen and I both recognized this desire we had: to work in a space on your own projects, but be surrounded by other hardworking people who are doing their own thing too,” says Bill. “It gives you the chance to work hard but also have fun.”

That desire came well before the “co-working boom,” and at a time when remote work was not nearly as commonplace as it now is. Priding themselves on being more than just a co-working space, Bill, Jen and Rebecca think of the space as a community hub, or a clubhouse. The Studio offers 24/7 access for members, free parking, private event space, and an extra perk: dog friendly. “Sometimes it feels like there are more dogs here than people,” says Bill.

“It gives you the chance to work hard but also have fun.”

“We always want to support cool and fun stuff happening. We want our members to be a part of a vibrant community, and to feel a sense of ownership of their own space.”

Coming up on its 10th anniversary, The Studio has firmly established itself as the eclectic, creative co-working and event venue that it is now known as. Inside lives a vintage airstream (available to book for meetings, etc.), reclaimed vintage doors used in the place of boring partitions to separate desks and a kitchen stocked with free coffee, tea, beer and snacks for members.

More than their desire to fill desks, Rebecca speaks to the importance they place on the curated energy of the space that attracts and encourages creatives from all different walks of life.“It’s a mutual relationship,” Rebecca says. “From the very beginning, it was ‘let's make sure to have diversity in terms of industry and people.’ It’s a curated community filled with people who are actively engaged and contributing to the environment.”

Along with co-working, The Studio (Boulder) also offers its space up for events: bat/bar mitzvahs, corporate events, milestone birthdays and wedding receptions are just a few of the many potentials of the creative hub.

“Boulder can be inaccessible when it comes to venues,” says Rebecca. “I’ve worked in the start-up world for a long time, and I believe in creating products and services that are accessible. And when I say accessible, I mean affordable. You’re cutting out so much of the population and potential if you’re only focused on revenue.”

As they never really planned for events to be a main component of the business, Bill, Jen and Rebecca have been pleasantly surprised and encouraged with the events held thus far. “People just want a place to gather with their loved ones,” says Rebecca. “It is a really unique space where we try to accommodate as many types of events and professionals as possible.”

Another note worth mentioning: with a membership, any member can host any event under 40 people for zero dollars. “We always want to support cool and fun stuff happening. We want our members to be a part of a vibrant community, and to feel a sense of ownership of their own space,” says Bill.

The Studio (Boulder) is a place for positive collaboration, inspiration and is filled with hard-working individuals. It’s also a place for fun, jokes and good chunks of serendipitous and productivity-free conversation to make your workday go by a little bit faster. And on top of it all—they sure know how to throw a party.

Compassion is Our Superpower

BRANDILYN TEBO’S SING TO THE WOLF, HOWL TO THE MOON

Brandilyn Tebo did not necessarily see herself as a children’s book author, but sometimes the best things in life come unexpectedly. During her career as a Transformational Coach, Brandilyn has committed her energy and passion to aiding individuals in the synthesis of the body, mind, and spirit. Above all else, Brandilyn sees compassion at the center of everything.

“It is so easy for us to diffuse our hurt onto someone else rather than fully feeling and processing it," says Brandilyn. "This creates a chain reaction of the wounded becoming the wounder until someone stops the next domino from falling by being brave enough to fully witness the pain. Sing to the Wolf, Howl to the Moon is an example of the courage it takes to stop that vicious cycle.”

KIDS CORNER | EDUCATION
86

This principle of compassion that Brandilyn prioritizes in her work as a coach, translates beautifully within the pages of her first children’s book.

In Sing to the Wolf, Howl to the Moon , a self-described children’s book “for all ages,” the readers find themselves transported back in time to a village in Normandy, France. We meet our protagonist, Lena, a Celtic medicine woman with three children and a husband. Lena is extremely introspective, compassionate, and unique. When Lena has a terrifying encounter with an enraged wolf named Elyna, instead of succumbing to the fear, Lena opens her heart and mind to the possibility of what could be if she just loved. With this love and grace, Elyna finds it in herself to forgive. As Brandilyn so rightfully acknowledges in the preface of this book: “When someone is least lovable, that is when they need love the most.” The love shared between Lena and Elyna, two kindred spirits, demonstrates hope for humanity and encourages readers to imitate the story’s message of acceptance in our own lives.

The idea for this story came to Brandilyn in a special way: a vision. One day, while Brandilyn was deep in a Holotropic breathwork experience, the whole story of Sing to the Wolf, Howl to the Moon began to channel through her, as if she was living it from the protagonist's perspective. Once Brandilyn finished her breathwork immersion, she decided to share her vision, and this is how her children's book was born.

My conversation with Brandilyn was profound, as we talked about the child in all of us and how adults over time try to suppress this inherent part of ourselves. For Brandilyn, one motivation behind sharing this story is her belief that “intergenerational conversations are missing in our society.” In publishing books like Sing to the Wolf, Howl to the Moon and initiating tough conversations, Brandilyn hopes to stir change.

“Children still live in the world of archetype," says Brandilyn. "They’re constantly stimulating their own imaginations and we often lose that as we grow into adulthood.” Archetypes play a very important role in Brandilyn’s work. She has found that using archetypes helps adults reclaim the beauty of adolescence and relinquish any burdens that are overcomplicating their lives and causing distress.

"This book reminds us all of the miracle-working power of our own compassion, that we are never truly alone in our pain, and that the cycle of hurt can end with us,” says Brandilyn. A strong message that pertains to people from all walks of life. Brandilyn shared with me a quote from C.S. Lewis as part of her inspiration: “Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”

Indeed, Sing to the Wolf, Howl to the Moon makes even the cynic in us believe that anything is possible when compassion is your superpower to wield.

“I really love the overall design of this project in particular.”

Creating an outdoor living experience that can be enjoyed nearly year-round is a difficult feat given the variable climate of the Front Range. Yet that’s precisely what local landscape design/build firm RSL Outdoor accomplished in a recent, major Boulder County remodel project.

“The homeowners for this project had built this amazing house nearly 15 years ago,” John Herron, general manager of RSL Outdoor, says. “They had purposefully left the landscape to a minimum so that, when the time was right after a great deal of time abroad, they could really sink their teeth into the design and space knowing that they were going to be home to enjoy it.”

The homeowners were seeking a versatile outdoor living space that could facilitate a variety of activities, including relaxation, dining, grilling and enjoying a dip in the pool and hot tub. They were likewise looking for the space to have a high-end finish and match the modern aesthetic of their home. Recognizing the many facets of the project, the homeowners turned to RSL Outdoor as their one-stop partner for design expertise and orchestration of the massive scope of the project from the start to the end of the remodel.

“These homeowners were wonderful to work with,” John says. “We collaborated with them on each and every detail to get the design just right before the ultimate construction began.”

The result is a stunning backyard living area that represents a perfect blend of function and aesthetic. The abundant patio space was all built using porcelain tile—a preference of RSL Outdoor given Colorado’s climate that is highly durable, fade-resistant and easy to clean—giving the entire area a consistent and modern sheen. The louvered roof equipped with fans and infrared heat enables outdoor enjoyment in many types of weather—providing shade from the intense Colorado sun during the summer but also allowing entry for that natural light when the temperature dips.

Another prevalent motif that carries throughout the space is the harmonious blend of modernity with the natural elements surrounding the home. The clean modern lines that tie back to the house are softened by rich plantings. Carefully selected boulders and additional flora give a rustic Colorado feel while providing varied texture and color throughout the seasons. The pool with a built-in spa—created in collaboration with Mr. Pool—features a gorgeous sun deck and custom stone coping that leads right into the grass of the lawn. This grounded look anchors the space and gives it an innate natural flow that alludes to the lake views to the west of the property.

In all, it’s a project that exemplifies RSL Outdoor’s unique ability to create outdoor living spaces that artfully satisfy the needs of homeowners while respecting and connecting with the surrounding natural world.

“I really love the overall design of this project in particular,” John says. “This was a homecoming of sorts for our clients, and the space just blends flawlessly with the existing beauty of both the house and the natural space in which it sits.”

From Monday through Thursday every week, you’ll find the garden level of First Congressional Church in downtown Boulder abuzz with the hum of sewing machines. Piles of poufs, pillows and totes await packaging and loading for markets, and stacks of fabric and filler line the walls. In the back, the industrial kitchen is filled with tester dog treats, cookies and often, a birthday or graduation cake. For four days a week, this is the headquarters of Mindful Works, which provides education, employment and empowerment to individuals facing obstacles due to mental illness.

Founded as a social enterprise by the non-profit The Windhorse Guild, Inc. in 2014, the Boulder-based program trains “apprentices” in the design, production and sales of high-quality, handcrafted products including everything from bags to baked goods.

“But people know us as the pouf people,” explains Kylie Stetler, the marketing manager of Mindful Works.

Diane Gollnick, a board director explains that's because cushions are where it all started nearly 10 years ago: “We started out with meditation cushions,” she says. “We did meditation cushions and zabutons for some of the Shambhala centers around here.” Then, their reputation grew. “There are five flags at each Naropa center and we started to do all of the flags. And then we got this wonderful facility with a commercial kitchen.”

“They're just people— they're not their mental illness. They're a person. And this is a place to belong.”

Now, with many folks interested in a culinary career, Mindful Works has started to expand to include training in that field as well, with standing orders for baked goods at the church or for Windhorse Community Services.

The program offers a varied path for each participant. Apprentices might arrive at Mindful Works through Colorado’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, mental health providers, the website or other organizations working to help people gain work skills to get a job in the traditional labor market or return to school. From there, apprentices begin to learn to cook or to cut fabric, then how to “serge” which creates a clean edge that won’t fray. Then, it’s on to sewing if the apprentice is interested. Some may stay for mere months, others might participate for years.

“What's most important about this place is the outlet it provides for adults with mental health challenges, who, without a place to go, might isolate themselves in their apartment,” Diane says. “But, because of their work here, they have a reference. They have job experience. And they have never had that before.”

“People come here and they have never fit somewhere,” says board member Becky Jacobson. “But people belong here. And I always explain: I used to be a staff member, and now I’m a board member, and yet I don't know anybody's diagnosis. They're just people—they're not their mental illness. They're a person. And this is a place to belong.”

Find their poufs, pillows and more at markets like Boulder and Longmont’s monthly artisan markets (BCFM. org), Firefly Handmade market (FireflyHandmade.com), the Horseshoe Market in Denver (HorseshoeMarket. com), or the Colorado Art Shows (ColoradoArtShows.com)  Find even more products and order custom designs at Mindful-Works.org.

Every Boulderite knows you’re not a true Southwestern local until you’ve made the pilgrimage to the mecca of the Southwest lifestyle; Santa Fe, New Mexico.

From the sprawling stunning sunsets to blue corn tortillas and Christmas Chile (the iconic New Mexican red and green chile combo), we’ve tested the itinerary for a perfect weekend trip to Santa Fe from Boulder. Known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene and delectable Southwestern cuisine, Santa Fe offers a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. Here’s the lowdown on where to stay, what to do, and what to eat.

WHERE TO STAY Ojo Spa Resort

You may have heard of Ojo Caliente, the iconic geothermal soaking pools outside of Taos, but have you heard of Ojo Santa Fe?

Nestled in the heart of the high desert, Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort is a serene oasis just minutes outside of Santa Fe itself that promises a rejuvenating stay.

People have been coming to the area for centuries to heal in the oasis waters and so this luxurious destination is a can’t-miss. Because of its rich history and healing for all, Ojo offers a variety of accommodations and soaking packages that prioritize accessibility. The resort is committed to stewarding these ancient waters by prioritizing access and providing unmatched value in your options, whether it’s to purchase day passes that allow untimed entry from opening to its 10:00 p.m. close to a full overnight stay.

We chose to spend the night in one of its charming casitas (with enchanting suite options as well) to maximize the generous package of the spa itself. As well, we took advantage of the properties and other amenities. The property includes 77 acres of lush hiking landscape as well the celebrated Blue Heron, the onsite dining experience featuring classic New Mexican fare and produced sourced from its greenhouse.

With access to a full day of soaking from the day of check-in through 10:00 p.m. on the day of check-out, we were able to treat ourselves to a range of soothing treatments, mineral-rich thermal pools and one of the largest saltwater pools in New Mexico. The resort's natural hot springs are one of the major appeals to the property with spring water sourced directly from the land and treated by its on-site treatment facility ensuring the integrity and minerality of the soaking water. Ojo Spa Resort leaves you feeling refreshed and invigorated with its lush

gardens and tranquil ambiance; it’s the perfect place to unwind and recharge during your weekend escape.

EL REY COURT

For a more eclectic and retro experience, look no further than El Rey Court. This unique boutique hotel captures the essence of vintage Santa Fe while incorporating modern amenities. The well-designed rooms boast a blend of Southwestern and Mid-century styles, giving you a taste of the city's history. The picturesque courtyard and heated saltwater pool, which they’ve adorably branded as Swim Club, provide an inviting space to relax and socialize with fellow travelers. El Rey Court is conveniently located on historic Route 66, making it a short drive from Santa Fe's main attractions. Experience the charm of the old world with a contemporary touch at El Rey Court during your weekend stay.

Now we can’t talk about El Rey without talking about its hip and happening hotel bar La Reina. The extremely cool bar with excellently crafted quality cocktails is the talk of the town. Between the Swim Club and La Reina, we were impressed by the intermingling of locals, travelers and people who found themselves somewhere in between. Perhaps it’s the slew of local entertainment and happenings or the simple energy of the place that keeps this haunt true to its slogan: "Where fast lives slow down."

WHERE TO EAT

Despite the wonderful food and beverage offerings at both Ojo Santa Fe and El Rey Court, we thought we would explore some other dining options, because who doesn’t love options? And boy, did we hit the jackpot.

Modern General

We recommend starting your culinary journey early in Santa Fe with a visit to Modern General Feed and Seed, a charming café that celebrates health-conscious and sustainable eating and adorable home and kitchen products. For a cute coffee and casual fast brunch, they offer an array of nourishing dishes, Modern General focuses on locally sourced, organic ingredients that are sure to delight your taste buds. From delightful avocado toasts to colorful grain bowls, its menu caters to various dietary preferences, including vegan and gluten-free options. We can’t recommend enough—indulging in its delectable baked goods, “Modcakes” (don’t skip the green chile corn cakes) and refreshing beverages, all made with love and a commitment to mindful eating.

Sazón

The real and unparalleled showstopper on your Southwestern food tour is inarguably Sazón. We can not recommend this institution enough. They provide a journey through the authentic taste of Santa Fe's culinary heritage, in an upscale restaurant environment showcasing traditional New Mexican flavors with a contemporary twist. James Beard’s 2022 “Best Chef of the Southwest” winner Chef Fernando Olea's expertise in blending local ingredients and culinary techniques creates a symphony of flavors on your palate.

With a warm and welcoming ambiance and top-of-the-line service, Sazón offers one of the most memorable dining experiences of our stay. Be sure to try its signature Mole Negro, a rich and complex sauce served with tender meats, or its enchiladas de Jaiba, a unique twist on traditional enchiladas filled with succulent crabmeat. We ventured through the Chef’s tasting menu and were delighted and blown away by the food we tasted, including its choice to start your meal with a dessert of avocado ice cream and a symphony, the namesake of the dish, of other flavors including piñon nuts and essence of chile.

We also can’t help but compliment the maître d' who guided our wine for the evening expertly pairing our dining experience. He shared with us his excitement about the world of Mexican wine, which is rapidly gaining popularity due to its exquisite wines and maturing market.

We left Sazón full of not only great food but a rejuvenated love and appreciation for all things hospitality and service that make this restaurant a can’t-miss on the Santa Fe Food Scene.

WHAT TO DO: Santa Fe Opera

After you’ve soaked your heart out, partied at La Reina, and eaten at Sazôn, a visit to the Santa Fe Opera for its summer season is an absolute luxury must. Set against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this open-air opera house offers a world-class magical experience like no other. The stunning architecture and panoramic views create an unforgettable atmosphere for both seasoned opera enthusiasts and first-time attendees. The Santa Fe Opera showcases a diverse repertoire, featuring classic operas, modern masterpieces, and innovative productions rated against some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Before the performance, arrive early to enjoy a tailgate picnic on the opera's beautifully landscaped grounds, a cherished tradition among visitors. Watching a world-class opera performance beneath the starry New Mexico sky is sure to be a highlight of your weekend trip.

A weekend trip to Santa Fe from Boulder promises an unforgettable dip into the Southwestern lifestyle. A trip promises experiences filled with relaxation, culture and gastronomic delights. From the serene retreat of Ojo Spa to the retro charm of El Rey Court, you have an array of options for where to stay. Dining at Modern General and Sazón will satisfy your culinary cravings and The Santa Fe Opera will captivate your senses with its world-class performances. Embrace the magic of Santa Fe, and savor every moment of this delightful weekend escape.

EXPLORE THE STUNNING LANDSCAPE AND PHILOSOPHY OF CANYON PINES

Foundation

In 2021, the Canyon Pines Development Company purchased 180 acres of forested land on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains with plans to create a fully custom residential community immersed in nature and steeped in high-quality design. But this was far from the beginning of the vision for this special stretch of land, which first began to be assembled in 1980. Now, over 40 years after the initial land acquisition, Canyon Pines has come to fruition.

Canyon Pines represents a unique luxury living opportunity with its dual inimitable access to mountain recreation and its effortless proximity to some of the Front Range’s most vibrant hubs, including Golden, Boulder and Denver. Comprised of 90 homesites on lots ranging from half-acre to three acres of land, the community is an unmatched combination of tranquil mountain living with everyday convenience and an ideal location.

Perhaps the most distinguishing factor of Canyon Pines, though, is the developers’ staunch commitment to honor the landscape’s natural identity.

“Our guiding principle is to minimize the impact of the infrastructure and homes on this incredible piece of land,” says Debra Wyatte, SVP of community experience with Canyon Pines. “Canyon Pines celebrates the special

relationship between the land and architecture with custom lifestyle design that brings us closer to nature. We do this by honoring three community pillars.”

As Debra notes, the first of these foundational pillars is existing as “One With the Land.” She notes that every site within Canyon Pines tells a different story and that every decision, from the original community layout with built-in natural viewing corridors to mindful architecture, is made with a synergistic perspective. Not only are the grand, sweeping views of Coal Creek Canyon to the west and the Great Plains with Denver’s skyline to the east honored but also the individual characteristics of each lot.

“The first sign that we have alignment with prospective architects and homeowners is when their design starts from the unique aspects of their lot,” Debra says.

The second piece of the Canyon Pines philosophy is that it be “Architecturally Diverse.”

“No two things in nature are exactly alike,” Debra says, “nor are they at Canyon Pines. Each lot, home and resident present an opportunity for a thoughtful design that harmonizes with our ecological diversity and gracefully recedes into the landscape.”

Multiple modern architectural genres are available to buyers at Canyon Pines to ensure that they are empowered

Natural CONTINUED > 109 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER SEPTEMBER 2023

to create a home customized to their unique style, but that can also exist seamlessly with the natural landscape. These styles include modern, prairie, cabin, homestead, ranch and vernacular.

“In reviewing the design guidelines, touring the lots and reflecting on the design opportunities, Canyon Pines sets a new standard in harmonizing modern design and nature,” Ken Andrews says, AIA and principal architect at Arch11. “This fully custom home community pushes boundaries, seamlessly merging the built environment with the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Great Plains and Coal Creek Canyon.”

The third Canyon Pines pillar is the idea of “Porch to Peak”—that buyers are afforded access to connect with nature in myriad forms just by stepping out their door. Whether this involves tranquil relaxation while taking in the stunning views, exploring the internal network of trails and over 1,200 acres of open space surrounding the community or taking a quick trek to one of the nearby outdoor recreation destinations, the community is supremely positioned to facilitate natural connections in all forms.

“As soon as you arrive at Canyon Pines, you feel a natural decompression that comes with being outdoors,” Debra says.

Alongside this reverence for the natural landscape is a recognition of the area’s unique history. Road names

throughout the community pay homage to the Union Pacific Railroad, which is yet another intriguing sight visible from the community.

Peak mountain living at Canyon Pines is also enhanced with modern amenities, such as municipal sewer and water from the City of Arvada, and fiber optic internet connections included with every lot. And, when a jaunt into the city is on the agenda, convenient access to CO-72 makes popping into one of the Front Range’s urban centers with all their shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities a breeze.

In all, Canyon Pines is a community that embodies the dual love and respect for nature and the desire for a modern lifestyle that is prevalent throughout much of the Front Range.

“As we considered our options, buy or build, we visited Canyon Pines and knew, the moment we took in the view and experienced the natural environment, that we found the place we wanted to call home,” said Dave and Jeremy, buyers in Canyon Pines. “Surrounded by the serenity of mature Ponderosa Pines and perched upon the slopes of Coal Creek Canyon, we felt at peace, removed from the frenetic pace of the urban life but close to all the amenities and services of Golden, Boulder and Denver. We can think of no better place to be, no better place to live the Colorado lifestyle.”
