Pura Vida!
I have to brag for a minute. I write this from a beautiful white sandy beach on the North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Guanacaste.
Throughout my stay here this past week, in between sunburns and piña coladas, the phrase "pura vida" has been said and heard, give or take, about 100 times. Translated directly to "simple life" or "pure life", in Costa Rica, it means much more than that. It is a way of life. Costa Ricans use this term to say hello, goodbye, everything's great, and everything's cool, or even the things that are not cool, but, you know, happened. The culture here has encouraged me to celebrate everything life brings, and to just be happy we're on this planet and have made it this far! I know that I will be heading back home refreshed and with a new perspective; yes, life can be hard, but aren't we lucky to be here in the first place?
For the rest of this summer, and hopefully beyond, I am challenging myself to continue to find the joy in the little things. The key to my happiness can't just be what I get on vacation, but rather simple and small things every day that help remind me of of how lucky I really am! I challenge us all to love what we love with abandon and make it something easy that we can add into our everyday life. When we pause and take a moment to look around, we can relish in the beauty of the lives we have created for ourselves.

A SPOTLIGHT ON CASH
EXPLORING SOLUTIONS FOR LAZY MONEY
FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES ARTICLE BY IMPACT WEALTH
48
In the world of personal finance, 'lazy money' is a term used to describe funds that are not actively working to generate returns. These could be funds sitting in low-interest savings accounts or funds that are not invested. With all the historic events over the past few months, the trillions of deposits that remain uninsured, and the trillions more that are earning very little interest, the cash conversation continues in abundance. With recent bank failures, the need for effective management of lazy money has become more apparent. Our clients are increasingly interested in spreading their money out and reducing risk.
Understanding Lazy Money
'Lazy money' refers to funds that are not being utilized to their full potential. These funds are often sitting in low-interest savings accounts, earning minimal returns and possibly underinsured. The risks associated with not effectively managing lazy money include missed opportunities for growth and potential loss due to bank failures or inflation.
Potential Solutions
Federally Insured Cash Account (FICA) by StoneCastle
One account: over 900 FDIC-insured banks. Through our partnership with StoneCastle's Federally Insured Cash Account, we offer a solution for managing lazy money. With a single FICA account, clients gain access to a network of over 900 banks in the U.S. This helps in spreading out the deposits and reduces the risk associated with keeping all money in a single institution.
FICA provides up to $25 million in FDIC insurance per tax ID, which is 100 times the standard FDIC insurance limit. All client deposits in FICA are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, and no one bank holds more than $250,000 per client. This means, there are no uninsured deposits which significantly reduces the risk of loss due to bank failures. Moreover, FICA offers a competitive annual percentage yield (APY) of 4.42% (as of 7/1/2023) which is 10 times higher than the national savings rate. This means that your money isn't just safe, but it's also growing. FICA clients have the flexibility to access their funds on a next-business-day basis with
24/7 online access, providing the liquidity often needed for effective cash management. And there are no account fees or transaction limits, and only a single Form 1099 for tax purposes.
StoneCastle was founded in 2003 and has over $22 billion under management. They provide insured deposit solutions to individuals and to some of the world’s most recognized companies, university endowments, foundations, family offices and public funds.
Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGAs)
Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGAs) are another solution for managing lazy money. MYGAs are a type of fixed annuity that provides a guaranteed interest rate for a specified period. They offer a safe and secure investment option with a guaranteed return, making them an attractive option for those looking to reduce risk.
MYGAs can provide a higher rate of return compared to traditional savings accounts and CDs, making them a good option for managing lazy money. They also offer tax-deferred growth, meaning you don't pay taxes on the interest earned until you start receiving payments.
Comparing FICA and MYGAs
Both FICA and MYGAs offer solutions for managing lazy money and reducing risk starting at $100,000 each. FICA provides a high level of FDIC insurance and access to a network of banks, while MYGAs offer guaranteed returns over a specified period. The choice between the two will depend on individual financial goals and need for liquidity.
Managing lazy money is crucial in today's uncertain economic environment. Both StoneCastle's FICA and MYGAs offer effective solutions for spreading money out and reducing risk. It's important for individuals to consider their personal financial situation and goals when choosing the right solution for their lazy money.
Now is the time to have the cash conversation. If you are interested in learning more about StoneCastle’s FICA accounts, how MYGA options may work for you, or for other investment ideas, please reach out to the Impact Wealth Team at (303) 645-4800 or Impact@ImpactWealth.com

Leo Kottke + Julian Lage
A tale of two guitarists, both Leo Kottke and Julian Lage are known for their prodigious handiwork. Leo Kottke was raised in 12 different states growing up and took on several influences as a child, including Mississippi John Hurt and American composer John Philip Sousa. Kottke was signed to guitarist John Fahey’s Takoma label and released 6 and 12 String Guitar, in 1969, which has come to be known as the Armadillo record due to the animal gracing its cover. Phish fans took note in the 2000s when Kottke started his collaborations with Phish bassist Mike Gordon.
View With A Room, Julian Lage’s latest full-length release on Blue Note shows his improvisational talent alongside bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King. The legendary guitarist Bill Frisell also complements Lage’s guitar on this ethereal album.

Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange) with Bella White
Watchhouse is an Americana/folk duo, consisting of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz, based out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Formerly known as Mandolin Orange, they chose to change their name to Watchhouse in 2021 and soon after released their self-titled LP. In 2022, the pair released a surprise self-produced, stripped-down version of their subsequent album called Watchhouse (Duo), in which all 9 songs are broken down to their fundamentals with the two of them playing their own arrangements at their most primordial. Expect this show to give attention to their earliest days of performing.

Rising Appalachia
Founded by sisters Leah and Chloe Smith, Rising Appalachia has been on the road for two decades. Their eclectic blend of folk, world, and urban music has been part of their sound since their inception. Special guests on their 2019 release Leylines include folk icon Ani DiFranco, songwriter Trevor Hall and jazz trumpeter Maurice Turner.
“We’re folk singers and we consider this a folk album, so there’s a lot in there. There’s word of politics, of being women in the music industry, as well as a lot about our lives on the road,” Chloe Smith says.

In 2015, they won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album for The Muscle Shoals Recordings. Snarky Puppy
Founded in 2004, Snarky Puppy is a jazz fusion collective, with as many as 20 members in regular rotation. Their latest album, Empire Central, won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.
“Snarky Puppy has always been a band that prioritizes the sound of music,” says bassist and collective leader Michael League. “On this record, the songs ended up being a lot more direct and funkier than those on our previous records. I think it reflects the many moods of the city’s scene”.

Native Edge Landscapes out of Boulder has been gratefully serving their community with landscape architecture, construction, and maintenance plans for 22 years and now additionally focuses on organic lawn and plant health care, as well as other eco-friendly and sustainable offerings in their service ecosystem.
“We exist to help individuals, families, and communities live their best lives outside,” says Tom Sunderland, owner/operator of Native Edge Landscapes. “This means creating and maintaining beautiful outdoor gathering spaces that not only draw people to enjoy more time outdoors with friends and loved ones, but also are safe, healthy and sustainable.”
When it comes to lawns and planting areas, a lot comes down to soil health. Healthy soils are living soils, full of biology, and they have countless benefits such as less weed pressure, providing more nutrients for lawns and plants and holding and retaining moisture better which lowers water use. By eliminating the need for synthetic chemicals, Native Edge Landscapes’ programs help keep water clean, people safe and landscapes bee and pollinator friendly.
“There is a perception by some that organic practices don't work well enough when it comes to
controlling weeds and maintaining beautiful lawns,” Tom says. “With the proper time and investment, an organic approach works wonderfully. We are building a living, biology-filled soil system, often from depleted, dead soils. It can take a bit of time and effort, but the benefits are huge.”
Native Edge Landscapes’ lawn care process includes organic fertilizers, aerations, compost topdressing, overseeding and compost tea applications. When converting to organic from synthetic, a more robust treatment program on the front end is best to begin supercharging the soils with biological activity. As healthy biological activity increases, fertilizer and herbicide treatments can decrease, making organic lawn care easier and less costly as time passes. Periodic in-house soil testing and analysis help keep an eye on evolving soil health and help tailor service plans to address specific conditions.

“We exist to help individuals, families, and communities live their best lives outside.”
“Although organic practices have been around for quite some time, and the products we use are very safe and eco-friendly, managing perceptions and educating the public remains challenging,” says Tom. "There is an understandable fear of toxic chemicals out there, and a general mistrust of anyone spraying liquids from a tank or backpack, even if it is labeled organic. It's not uncommon for people to approach our technicians with a palpably aggressive or angry tone. However, once we are given the opportunity to educate them about our approach and the products we are using, apologies and enthusiastic endorsements are what typically comes next.” Don’t panic! It’s organic! is a recent motto Native Edge Landscapes has adopted.
Creating and maintaining defensible space mitigates the possibility of being
affected by wildfires. When properly maintained, defensible space acts as a barrier to slow or halt the progress of a wildfire. From the clearing of debris in Zone 1 (0-5 feet from your home) to cutting back ladder fuels from the base of trees and keeping branches pruned up to 6 feet above the ground in Zone 3 (30100 feet from your home), Native Edges Landscapes can help you protect what matters most in the time of an unfortunate wildfire event.
Native restoration and invasive species mitigation are crucial to homeowners that have a significant amount of natural area on their land. If aggressive and invasive weeds aren’t managed properly in natural areas, they may push out more desirable plants and reduce both the health and esthetic of the natural beauty of your landscape. Through proper restoration planning and periodic
evaluations, Native Edge Landscapes can ensure that your natural areas are thriving and contributing to the overall esthetic of your environment.
The company's local model and talented staff have a commitment to being green in an industry that relies on curating the environment. Its approach to organic lawn and plant health care focuses on the overall health of your home’s entire outdoor space. Improving the core health of the ecosystem and treating weeds, pests and disease as symptoms allow for placing biology at the forefront and improving the overall longevity of trees, shrubs, lawns and natural spaces. The benefits of organic plant health care are several, including fortifying conditions to increase water efficiency, drought tolerance and overall safe environments for families, pets, and wildlife.

Laura Goodson Talks

Laura Go d s n Art o
Born and raised in Texas, Laura Goodson didn’t start out as an artist. It was quite the opposite. She didn’t even start painting until a handful of years ago—and it was to grab the attention of a woman she was pursuing who was a frequent art collector and gallery-goer.
“I knew nothing about art…still don’t know all that much, but I just do what feels real to me,” Laura says.
Much to her surprise, not even a week after finishing her first few pieces, she landed a pop-up show right out of the gate, after a friend showed a photo of Laura’s work on her cell phone to a shop owner. The offer came so quickly that it felt incredibly intimidating to her; she initially declined, feeling like she didn’t deserve a show yet. But luckily through encouragement, she nervously went through with it.
“I go head first and full on…and in many cases, it has served me well, and in other cases, like shallow pools, it’s been a bit painful,” she says.
The night before her show, she produced 12 pieces.
“I had no idea how long oils took to dry so I took wet pieces to my show,” Laura laughs.
That show, she sold a few of her first paintings.
“In everything I do, I tend to just go for it,” Laura says. “I produce in a quick way because it’s a single color and typically single brush strokes and then I’m done.”
She said she never wrestles with wondering if a piece is done or not. She always just knows. Her art has graced the walls of The Pilsen Yards in Chicago, Modern Nomad in Denver, The Clayton Club in Cherry Creek and a permanent exhibition is on display at the Hacienda Zotoluca in Apan, Hidalgo, Mexico. A position at an environmental engineering company and easier access to the mountains brought her to Denver. While her initial romantic pursuit was the spark to her art career, and she did end up dating the woman, many changing winds led them in different but mutually art driven and supportive directions.

“I hold a great appreciation for what others can bring out in parts of you that we alone sometimes don’t even know exists and that’s how my art got started,” Laura says. Someone else shed light on something inside of me. Now I spend time shining that light myself but I am always grateful for my journey and the way it all started including the people who started it.
She started painting cowboys and says they haven’t changed much. She tends to paint 25-50 pieces a month for her art drops and requested commissions..
“I honestly do not think much, I just let whatever is real and authentic to me come through onto the canvas…and it’s been cowboys for the most part,” Laura says.
Her paintings fall into a cohesive black-and-white color scheme.
“I can’t even begin to think about color. It honestly overwhelms me…I went into an art store and asked for black paint. And it has been that since,” she says. Well, up until recently where she went completely wild with a hot pink collection, launching on July 15th.
She comments that this notion overflows to her wardrobe, which leans heavily on the same all-black shirt, black jeans and same boots because her mind is so consumed by other things. She prefers to stay simple in these spaces.
“I have seen myself liberated in ways and able to expand into abstract work that feels like I’m mirroring my mind, thoughts and feelings,” she says.
“My abstracts are like one of my Man in Hat pieces
exploded...you see all the different elements plus other things less literal.”
Laura’s sense of freedom and letting her intuition drive her is what’s led to two other successful rental endeavors: The Cabin and The Cowboy Motel.
The Cabin, tucked away in Uvalde, Texas, serves as an artist’s retreat. Available for Airbnb rental listed as Hat Hill Hideaway, the 2-bedroom, 2-bath, “interactive cowboy-themed space” offers guests the chance to unwind and reconnect to nature. It’s also shoppable for art, limited edition jackets and curated vintage items.
The Cowboy Motel is located about 20 minutes from The Cabin. The endeavor started when her mom sent her a screenshot of the motel’s real estate listing from social media and Laura immediately put in an offer. Less than a month later, she was shocked to find herself as the owner of a motel she’d purchased sight unseen and knew nothing about.
Even though she says she didn’t have a clue what she was doing, it came together. On opening night, The Cowboy hosted its first five guests.
“I still don’t {know what I’m doing}, but I’ve spent a LOT of time figuring it out. And most days I get help from YouTube, the cowboys/ranchers at the cafe across the street, and so many other amazing people on my path that I absolutely can not thank enough.” Laura says. She adds that while she’s still not where she wants to be with the motel, she is far from where she started.

MORE THAN JUST CURB APPEAL F A N A S A R CHITEC T U R E
Nestled in a quiet cul-de-sac and only steps from hiking trails and CU, it was the location that attracted the owner to this 1963-bedroom, two-bath, one-story home in the Lower Chautauqua area of Boulder.
The simple single-story ranch home, like so many Boulder homes, had good bones but was in need of an exterior facelift, more space and some site redesign to gain as much useable outdoor space for the occupants as possible. Acknowledging the desirable neighborhood and focusing on the potential of this home, Fanas Architecture worked with the homeowners to transform this outdated home into an efficient, updated little gem.
The existing asphalt circle driveway consumed the front yard. By relocating the garage doors from the south to the west wall of the garage, the driveway was able to be redesigned as a straight shot off of the culde-sac. This not only opened up the majority of the front yard for landscaping but provided separation of vehicular and pedestrian circulation at the front of the house. The existing front entry of the home was also relocated resulting in an elegant entry foyer with the previous entry area being converted into a dedicated laundry room. New fencing and landscaping complete the transformation and provide an updated and appropriate canvas for the home. The updates to the garage required rebuilding its roof which was extended east to cover the new study and bathroom. This new space looks out onto the updated outdoor living area at the rear of the house
and is accessed off of a short hallway connecting the front entry, garage and kitchen. The outdoor living space includes a fireplace and built-in grill and sits directly adjacent to the kitchen. In order to create a seamless indoor/outdoor transition, the north wall of the kitchen was opened up and large glass sliding doors were added.
The existing living room was spacious but felt dark and did not take advantage of the potential views to the west. Fanas proposed removing the existing small bay window located on the west wall and reframing the wall and roof to create a large dormer and new large windows facing the Flatirons. This modification transformed the space into a light and airy focal point of the home.
The existing exterior of the home felt almost Scandinavian with a small gabled entry element sporting carved trim, low pitched gable roof at the garage and the tacked-on living room bay window. The existing siding was in need of repair and painted a dark green which added to the dated aesthetic. Brick was added to the updated garage façade to complement existing brick on the home and the existing brick required patching in many areas which confirmed the decision to paint the entire exterior of the home white. A new entry element was added and this, along with all-new black-framed windows, new black metal facia on the new roofs and new black roof shingles results in an end product that is clean, simple and timeless.

With Dale being a founding member of the Colorado Green Building Guild and both Dale and Elizabeth having served on the CGBG Board of Directors, Fanas Architecture focuses on energy-efficient solutions for every project, providing guidance and recommendations for each specific client. Significant energy upgrades and improvements were required by the city of Boulder and incorporated into the remodeling of the home.
Fanas Architecture has noticed that full remodel projects as opposed to complete rebuilds have become a trend for many homeowners in Boulder. Dale and Elizabeth Smith, encourage this approach if at all feasible. Having met while in school at CU in the late 1980s, Dale and Elizabeth have watched Boulder neighborhoods develop, evolve and in some instances, lose much of their original character which is unfortunate. Not only will a full remodel provide the best "bang for the buck" for the homeowner in terms of costs, but these projects help maintain the original aesthetic of unique Boulder neighborhoods.
The Gaelic name, “Fanas” has a dual meaning of space and opportunity. Fanas truly believes that every space is full of opportunity. Fanas works with clients in evaluating their property, analyzing their goals and developing unique, aesthetic solutions in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Every project is unique and the key to a successful project is understanding the specific needs of each client and translating these into a design that works for them.

A BOULDER INSTITUTION SERVING CLASSIC FRENCH CUISINE WITH A MODERN TWIST

Three years after a pandemic-driven closing and 20 years after their first opening on Boulder’s Walnut St., Brasserie TenTen has come back strong. A Boulder institution, mostly just known as “Brasserie” to those locals in the know, has been serving the community as a well-known hangout for people to gather and dine on French classics in a bustling and vibrant setting.
“Running a Boulder institution is a great honor and responsibility,” says Executive Chef and Partner, Tony Hessel. “It means being part of a community that has a deep appreciation for food, service, and a sense of place. It also means being committed to upholding the high standards that have made the restaurant a beloved part of Downtown Boulder.”
Closing in on a year after reopening, Brasserie TenTen has found its footing and re-rooted itself back into the Boulder dining scene. “The restaurant has evolved into everything we wanted it to be,” Tony says.
While the dining room stays basically the same as it was before the restaurant's closing, the kitchen has gone through a complete overhaul. “It was a long and challenging process, but we felt it was necessary to keep our restaurant up-to-date,” Tony says. “We wanted to keep the dining room the same to preserve its classic atmosphere so just a little paint, and special touches.”
On a recent Thursday dinner visit, as we entered, the bar was still packed after a busy post-Happy Hour crowd (Happy Hour is Tues-Sat 2:30-5:30 pm) where you can find daily discounts on oysters, appetizers, and drinks. We were lucky enough to reserve a table in the dining room right at the peak dinner hour. The dining room was brimming with action and the team circled tables with swift precision. We were seated promptly for our reservation and service was instantly authentic and amiable. Our
waiter was knowledgeable and friendly, knew the menu and wine list inside and out, and treated his guests with grace and aplomb.
We started with Pomme Frites as hors d’oeuvres and two glasses of white wine, a Riesling and a Sauvignon Blanc. The wine list leans towards the old world and everything is available by both glass and bottle. While we chose two of the value offerings, any glass over $20 is poured by Coravin, a wine preservation system from which you can pour wine without removing the cork. This is a great way to try wines you may not otherwise want to spring for a bottle of, and the rest of the bottle stays fresh and vibrant. As recent recipients of the 2023 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for their extensive wine list, Brasserie is extremely proud of their Beverage Director Jason Ledterman for managing and continuing to keep their wine selection fresh and exciting.
The Pomme Frites hit the table and were impeccably savory and crisp. Pre-pandemic the frites were more of a Belgian-thick cut style but they’ve opted to change the recipe to a thinner shoestring style, piled high and

served with a tarragon aioli. Two excited diners next to us were commiserating over a large bowl of mussels, using the shells as a spoon and sopped up the broth with pillowy bread. This and the frites cued me to order the traditional mussel preparation (Prince Edward Island mussels steamed with garlic, shallot, leek, thyme, white wine, lemon, butter, and crème fraiche). Chef Tony mentioned that the kitchen was focused on traditional cuisine with some non-traditional touches. The placemat-sized menu is filled with traditional French offerings like Entrecote Frites (grilled hanger steak with pomme frites and maître d butter) and Bouillabaisse (traditional Provençal fish and shellfish stew with country bread and sauce rouille).
My dining companion opts for the Salade Niçoise for a main course, served with the traditional accompaniments and I chose the Halibut Meuniere. The nightly offerings change and specials grace the menu (that night it was Duck Confit Croquettes and Trout Almondine) but we stuck with the classics. The halibut was flawlessly seared and accompanied by perfectly cooked asparagus; tiny croutons stud the top of the fish, soaking up the lemon butter. The Salade Niçoise was crowned with a delicately poached egg, and the yolk intermingled with the Dijon basil vinaigrette.

“Running a Boulder institution is a great honor and responsibility.”
We couldn’t pass up dessert to help finish our wine and we went for the classic opera cake; an almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup. It’s rich and unctuous and an ideal finish to the meal.
“Reopening and running a busy restaurant in Boulder after a three-year absence is a challenge in itself,” says Tony. “It is a different business model. We are aware of these changes and are adapting as quickly and as efficiently as possible.” Not only is Brasserie TenTen reopening their business, but they are bringing back a Boulder institution. Judging by the bustling crowd on a Thursday and an excellent meal, Brasserie TenTen is here to stay this time around.
“The restaurant has evolved into everything we wanted it to be.”

A FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE PRIMER
ARTICLE BY WILLOW KING | ARTWORK BY GINA DODGE STUDIO
While many people consider acupuncture a great treatment for over well-being and sometimes more specifically to treat injury or illness, they may not have considered it as a natural alternative to more invasive treatments to keep one's face looking plumped in all the right places, glowy and relaxed. Facial acupuncture works to stimulate lymphatic drainage and increase blood flow to the face. This increased blood flow can support collagen production, which can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and generally improve circulation in the facial and decolletage areas.
I had the pleasure of receiving a treatment from Dr. Stefanie Greenleaf to learn more about the process. Facial acupuncture is a time-honored tradition that has been used for thousands of years for maintaining beauty in all its forms and Dr. Greenleaf also emphasized that it is important to recognize that the face is a reflection of how the entire body is functioning internally, as well as a reflection of one's emotions.
When she works on patients, she addresses the full body first and then moves up to the face to address specific concerns there. She can work on crow's feet and wrinkles, but she can also help work on some of the root causes of those worry lines.
“In Chinese Medicine,” she says, “there is always the root and the branches. So we try to work with both.” She uses microcurrent in conjunction with the needles to stimulate and wake up the muscles in the face, followed by a toe-to-head acupuncture
treatment that demonstrated how tight my shoulder was (Gall Bladder 40 a.k.a. weight of the world) and how nice it feels to have the different meridian points come alive with the needles. My treatment also included a very relaxing and gentle gua sha (closest translation: skin spooning) with a lovely light oil and facial cupping, which felt like a tiny loving octopus all over the pressure points of the face, including a natural lip plumping, which was extra special.
In Chinese medicine, they talk about Shen, which loosely translates to spirit. One of the wonderful things about this kind of work is you can both see and feel the afterglow. After a treatment one's face can look more balanced and easeful, releasing tension in the jaw and some of the long-held patterns that eventually create crease lines, also known as the dreaded “elevens” between the eyes. The practice works on many levels—nervous system, immunity, central organs and the more cosmetic dermal level—all of which contribute to a deep sense of well-being after 90 minutes on the table.
Dr. Greenleaf suggests that 10 treatments, spaced about a week apart, is the most effective way to achieve desired results, followed by a maintenance protocol that can be specifically designed to suit the individual.
We need a licensed practitioner for the needles that are one of the main tools of acupuncture but one can do both facial cupping and gua sha at home. Stef will be teaching a class on home techniques on August 8 from 6-8 pm, all details Visit her site to register: StefanieGreenleaf.com/Class/

Rounding Up Some of Boulder, Denver and the Mountains’ Most Exciting Summer Market Events
ARTICLE BY LISA VAN HORNE
ARTWORK BY GINA DODGE STUDIO
Celebrating locally grown products and the creativity of local makers is a staple of the Colorado spirit year-round. This is especially true during the summer months when the Front Range, Rocky Mountains and many suburbs of the state’s metro areas positively teem with vibrant farmers market events.
It’s no surprise that perusing the booths of local farmers, start-ups and artists has been a favorite summer pastime of many Coloradans for decades given the proud local culinary and artisan traditions of so many of the state’s locales. But these markets aren’t just about gastronomic delights, as many of these events and their institutions serve important philanthropic purposes when it comes to advocating for environmental and agricultural sustainability, supporting community members in need and much more.
With farmers market season in full swing, we put together a quick round-up of a few of these events for you to sample when you’re craving a day of local excitement and community connections.

BOULDER COUNTY FARMERS MARKETS
To say that the Boulder County Farmers Markets organization has grown since its inception would be an understatement. What started as a small gathering of local farmers sharing their wares in 1987 has evolved into a much-loved nonprofit institution that is integral to Boulder’s summertime culture. While its scope and popularity have blossomed, its goal of supporting the health and success of the local food system has remained.
Boulder County Farmers Markets runs recurring seasonal market events as well as a yearround online marketplace. The summertime Boulder Farmers Market on Saturdays runs from April to November from 8 AM to 2 PM. In addition to a cornucopia of culinary delights, visitors enjoy live music, activities for children and artisan markets on the second Saturday of each month. These events are complemented by the Boulder Farmers Market on Wednesdays, which runs from May to October from 4 PM to dusk.
Meanwhile, the Longmont Farmers Market operates from April to November from 8 AM to 1 PM and likewise features monthly artisan markets (on the fourth Saturday of the month) and an impressive host of local producers and makers.
Boulder County Farmers Market events are also great places to score your stash of Palisade peaches, with the most abundance in August and September.
CHERRY CREEK FRESH MARKET
The list of goods available at the Cherry Creek Fresh Market is enough to make any food lover swoon. From locally grown fruits and vegetables to local honey, artisanal baked goods, fresh smoothies, exquisite cheeses and much more, it’s an event that boasts enormous opportunities for fresh food and handcrafted treasure discovery.
The Cherry Creek Fresh Market is part of Colorado Fresh Markets, an incubator program that has supported hundreds of local food producers, entrepreneurs, artisan makers and food-related causes through its seasonal fresh food events since 1997.
The Cherry Creek Fresh Market encompasses a number of dog-friendly events, including the Saturday Fresh Market and Makers Marketplace from May 6 to November 4 from 9 AM to 2 PM and the Wednesday Summer Market from June 14 to August 16 from 9 AM to 1 PM. For those searching for coveted Palisade peaches, the fruit is listed as one of the market’s “4 Favs” of summer along with homegrown tomatoes, Olathe sweet corn and Rocky Ford melons.
The Denver Metro Area plays host to numerous additional farmers markets throughout the summer as well, including the City Park Farmers Market, the Union Station Farmers Market and many more.

FRESH FOOTHILLS FINDS
Venturing into Denver’s foothills, locavores can find multiple farmer's markets with distinct community vibes. The Golden Farmers Market, established in 2002, is one such much-loved local event. With a mantra of “Community Sprouting Growth,” these events feature myriad local businesses and vendors and are run by the Golden Chamber of Commerce in an effort to promote connections, growth, innovation and food equity. These events occur on Saturdays from 8 AM to 1 PM from June 3 to October 7.
Further into the foothills is the Evergreen Farmers’ Market, which recently moved to its new home at the historic El Rancho restaurant. This Tuesday market runs from May 30 to September 26 from 10 AM to 2 PM.
MOUNTAIN TOWN MARKETS
Whether it’s for a day trip or a weekend getaway, jaunts to explore Colorado’s mountain towns can be enhanced with a stroll through many of these locales’ unique farmer's markets.
The Aspen Saturday Market is a much-loved local tradition that was established in 1998. From mid-June to early October on Saturday mornings from 8:30 AM to 2 PM, visitors can enjoy a bevy of Colorado-grown and produced artisan goods in a stunning ski town setting.
Meanwhile, the Steamboat Springs Farmers Market is celebrating its thirteenth year this summer with its vibrant Saturday markets from June 10 to September 23. From 9 AM to 2 PM, visitors can peruse the booths of vendors offering a host of fresh, local consumable goods and enjoy a kaleidoscope of arts and crafts.

10 YEARS & COUNTING
Kicking off in September of 2023, Boulder’s Month of Modern (MoM) celebrates ten years of inspiring, connecting and engaging with some of the most prominent minds in Boulder’s design community. Founded as a celebration of architecture, design, lifestyle, art and culture, MoM’s mission is to cultivate and be a leader in the conversation about Colorado’s modern, while presenting the Boulder region as one of the country’s most lively and vibrant hubs of modern design. This September and over the course of four weeks, MoM will be hosting speakers, and thought-provoking panels, all leading up to a fabulous wrap party that’s not to be missed. Designed to educate, delight and inspire, Month of Modern is moving full speed ahead this year, because ten years is worth celebrating - especially when it involves the character of our amazing city.
A quick Q&A with HMH Architecture + Interiors
Stephanie Bingham, leading the way as MoM’s Marketing & Operations Director.
1. MoM IS CELEBRATING 10 YEARS THIS YEAR! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU ALL?
From very humble beginnings, Month of Modern has shattered attendance records, and blown any expectations out of the water…back in 2014, we never imagined how this would grow. As the city’s unofficial celebration of design, Month of Modern has attracted hundreds of visitors to Boulder each year to celebrate creative accomplishments, share new ideas, and inspire through design.
2. HOW HAS THE BOULDER COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTED TO/IMPACTED MoM’S SUCCESS?
At its core, Month of Modern events are a chance for people to connect face-to-face where they can learn, network and grow. But it’s so much more than that. Boulder has an amazing community of talented designers that spans across expertise areas. Month
of Modern provides opportunities for participation and collaboration with the unified goal of presenting the region as one of the nation’s most vibrant hubs of modern design.

Transitions for a Major Renovation on Marine Street
“We extended the vaulted tongue and groove fir ceiling from the master out to the porch. Even though the interior and exterior finishes would be different, we really wanted a seamless color match.
This was a major renovation of a beautiful 1910 home. It’s in a historic neighborhood, so we kept the front looking much the same. The interior and back, where we added on, is more transitional and updated. We extended the vaulted tongue and groove fir ceiling from the master out to the porch. Even though the interior and exterior finishes would be different, as part of the design we really wanted a seamless color match. We put it to Tami to figure out. I’m not sure how, but she did that beautifully. The Maurer crews did such a great job overall. Sam was my head painter. The communication was really wonderful, a part of their higher-end business model. They’re all super nice guys - such good energy and so happy in their profession.”

AT BOULDER’S CLOUD MEDICAL PRACTICE, DOCTORS FOCUS ON COST-EFFECTIVE CARE
ARTICLE BY LINDEN BUTRYM
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE MILKUS
SELF CARE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 98
“Healthcare is the number-one cause of bankruptcy in the United States.” These striking words from Dr. David Tusek, founder and CEO of Cloud Medical Center in Boulder County, unfortunately, ring true for many people who feel they pay an exorbitant amount of money for primary care, which includes pediatrics, gynecology, adult medicine and urgent care. “They’ll go to a doctor who will prescribe, say, $400 worth of supplements,” he adds. “Well, is the doctor actually prescribing them or selling them—marking them up for profit?”
With Cloud Medical, Dr. Tusek aims to reform the healthcare system by offering his patients what he calls direct primary care: high quality primary care without copays and with 24/7 access to a provider. The idea for his business model came to him in a dream nearly 15 years ago after the introduction of the Affordable Care Act, which he initially supported but then felt was simply an expansion of Medicaid.
“Virtually all of our revenue comes from a monthly membership, which costs the same as a daily cup of coffee,” Dr. Tusek says. “We provide many other services, like EKG’s and joint injections, at no additional cost. And we offer expensive items like PRP, botox and supplements at a net zero profit.”
Many of his patients who’d like more catastrophic coverage choose to combine their Cloud Medical
membership ($129 per month for individuals; $229 per month for couples; plus several family membership options) with an independent HealthShare program that helps with hospitalizations and surgeries.
Another area of focus for Cloud Medical is the principle of proactive, not reactive, care and cultivating a healthy mindset from a young age. “We should be teaching people how to thrive, not to wait until their blood pressure is high and then put them on a pill,” he says. “If you can identify the things you’re doing and eating that spike your blood sugar levels in your 20s and 30s, you can very powerfully avoid and prevent diabetes from occurring in your 40s and 50s. When you’re 80, are you going to be climbing mountains or will you be hobbled by chronic, and often unavoidable illness?”
Dr. Tusek is also an advocate for functional medicine, which applies to a wide range of treatments. For example, instead of immediately prescribing an antidepressant for someone who feels depressed, a functional doctor will examine underlying challenges, whether it’s fatigue or mood shifts, to figure out if the person might have too little of something good (i.e. a mineral or vitamin deficiency) or too much of something bad (i.e. a gluten intolerance) that could be causing symptoms of depression. This approach is what attracted family nurse practitioner Vanessa Fitzgerald to Cloud Medical, which

she joined earlier this summer to accommodate an exponentially growing patient waitlist.
“It’s a special place,” she says, “because it’s a primary care practice that embraces all of the global healing traditions. They believe health is a cohesive balance of body, mind, emotions and spirit, and they bring together the best of conventional, integrative and natural medicine.”
Once a pioneer in his way of thinking, Dr. Tusek says there are now more than 1,500 direct primary care practices in the nation, and he hopes even more physicians will join his mission to transform healthcare into a more affordable and transparent business.
“Several years ago, there was a day I knew we were up to something good when one of the wealthiest people in Boulder came to me and said, ‘Thanks for building Cloud Medical; I think it’s the best healthcare money can buy,’” he says. “My next patient was a kid in his 20s who had three nickels to rub together. He said, ‘Cloud Medical is the only thing I can afford.’ To have them say these things, from each end of the spectrum, made me feel honored and humbled.”

BOULDER BALLET’S 2023/2024 SEASON CELEBRATES FOUR DECADES OF PERFORMANCE, EDUCATION, AND COLLABORATION
Boulder Ballet’s rich history includes bringing classical, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to venues that range across the front range. In their upcoming season the impact that dance can have on connection and wellness within the community is evident. As they twirl into this 2023/2024 season, the ballet presents AMPLIFY, a season highlighting art, wellness and connection through focusing on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness: social, environmental, physical, emotional, spiritual, occupational, intellectual, and financial.
“In a nutshell, our focus this season is to celebrate how impactful the arts can be for our wellness,” says Artistic Director Ben Needham-Wood
At Boulder Ballet this season, emphasis on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness is shaping the focus both on stage and in the studios. “So much of what we’re doing at Boulder Ballet connects to every piece of these dimensions. The emotional context in the work that we’re performing helps the dancers intellectually understand the technique, to have an emotional breakthrough, which leads to a spiritual result,” says Ben. With the company’s 41-year anniversary approaching, their vision and goal for this season are largely amplified. “The main concept we’ve been working on has been spearheaded by us asking ourselves, ‘How can we use our art to have a positive impact?’” By focusing on this theme of wellness, the Boulder Ballet recognizes how therapeutic and positive dance and the arts can be for anyone. “The social and communal aspects that the arts provide are great for the
community at large, and the benefits are felt by all,” Ben says. By taking these extra steps to support people's wellbeing, Boulder Ballet is taking ownership of the power the arts can hold.
This season, we can expect cutting-edge and powerful performances with the help of world-renowned choreographers. The company kicks off their year at the iconic Chautauqua Auditorium on September 23 with CONNECTION featuring works by celebrated dance makers Caili Quan and Amy Seiwert, and Denver-based talent, Sarah Tallman.
According to Ben, “Personal connections are a fundamental human desire that can empower us to exceed expectations. Every work in this program amplifies that spirit, allowing both artists and patrons to enjoy a truly meaningful experience together. This is a mustsee program.”
Another major highlight this season will be our winter performance, Limbic, which was developed in partnership with the Louisville Ballet, one of the nation’s oldest ballet companies. It is a powerfully unique program that will really embody the theme of our season, and there will be some big announcements that evening,” says Ben. Choreographers Andrea Schermoly, Brandon Ragland and Ben Needham-Wood will collaboratively create the winter program, but they aren’t the only big names included in Boulder Ballet’s upcoming season.” Other choreographers presented this season will include Val Caniparoli, Michael Smuin, and Christopher Wheeldon.

Creativity Thrives at Boulder’s All-female Art Nonprofit within a Historic Victorian on West Pearl

Marie-Juliette Bird, a Boulder resident since age 2, has always been guided by creativity.
As a child, she perfected pirouettes at The Ballet Arts Studio (the early origins of Boulder Ballet)— located above what is now the eatery SALT. She later attended Juilliard to study dance. While living in London, she taught piano lessons to actor Jude Law and has had her fine jewelry line Blackbird and the Snow featured on the cover of Vogue.
As founder of The New Local—Boulder’s all-female arts nonprofit—Marie is championing women creatives and the next generation of makers in her own backyard.
“I guess I always had a gallery fantasy tucked deep into my imagination,” Marie says. “But nonprofits were not on my radar before I launched TNL. It dawned on me that this structure is the most viable path forward, towards a sustainable arts presence in downtown Boulder.”
Before securing a perma nent location at 741 Pearl St., TNL hosted a successful pop-up within a space that held former janitorial retailer Top Hat Supply in 2019. In 2022, TNL evolved from a seasonal offering to a year-round living museum.
While rotating artists and staff contribute to the enchantment found within this thriving locale, the dwelling itself adds to the overall magic.
The Montgomery House—TNL’s home base that dates back to 1880—is an eye-catching Queen Anne, complete with lush vines and stained-glass windows.
“It’s so special to steward this gorgeous, historic building in downtown Boulder,” Marie says. “I feel a synergy between our iconic local landmark and the
project that we are cultivating, which is deeply and inherently local.”
Pieces by 60 local artisans can be found within the inviting gallery, and six affordable artist studios stay filled with creatives working in a variety of mediums.
“It feels like we are churning up the next dynamic arts wave within Boulder,” Marie says.
TNL is a place to purchase everything from beaded tapestries to leather vests and floral bouquets, but it’s also where all can dabble in creative expression. An array of workshops, some provided on a sliding-scale rate, are part of the mix. Many offerings are spearheaded by Lynette Errante, TNL’s director of operations – who also sells her ceramics in the gallery.
“When Lynette joined TNL, I asked her if she would like to develop a workshop program, and she grew that seed suggestion into a blossoming garden,” Marie says. “From the moment we started offering classes, the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.”
Passersby may witness children in a “fairytale forest” camp adorning tree trunks with gnome doorways or peek in on a group of Marshall Fire survivors partaking in art therapy.
“It’s wonderful to build that bridge between our talented roster of creators and the broader community of Boulder and beyond,” Marie says. “I often see people literally glowing after a class at TNL. People love to be in community and create.”
The artistry flows to TNL’s The Annex at 713 Pearl St., which in October will hold the work of Amistad—a local nonprofit that uplifts the Latinx community—for a Día De Los Muertos residency.

placed in boxes lined with red velvet. A swallow necklace rests in an actual bird’s nest, still holding delicate plumes.
“I started making jewelry when I was living in London, working on musical projects,” Marie says. “I was forever cutting up vintage clothes and safety pinning them together, tying dried starfish into my hair with thread, connecting baubles–you know, DIY design.”
Although much of Marie’s current days are spent making the nonprofit soar, she still dreams of creating time for future endeavors.
“I’ve been working on a butterfly wing fine jewelry collection for 600 years,” Marie says, “Maybe when TNL hits its stride, I’ll get back to that project.”
For now, she revels in helping locals sell their work within a model designed to fairly benefit artists.
“I think a common thread between my own mediums and expressions is the natural world, which is
informed by growing up in Boulder,”
Marie says. “We’re all so lucky to be surrounded by the wilderness here, as well as so many trees within the city limits.”
An elevated earthiness pours from each pocket of TNL.
“This ode to the natural world is a language shared by so many TNL artists, from botanical dyers to ceramicists who imprint local flora to painters of topographical mountain landscapes, we’re all translating what we see and feel into mediums that we hope people appreciate,” Marie says.
TNL is open every day and accepts monetary support through TheNew-Local.org.
“I love manifesting this dream into reality in my hometown,” Marie says. “Working with a talented team, giving artists a platform, enriching the community through innovative programming, curating an elevated gallery space on West Pearl—it’s all good.”

BUTTERFLY EFFECT THEATRE COMPANY
Flutter into a New World with Fall Productions of “Coal Country” and “The Belle of Amherst”
ARTICLE BY JESSICA MORDACQ
LOCALS ONLY | ARTS + CULTURE 114
Husband-wife team Rebecca Remaly and Stephen Weitz started the national award-winning Butterfly Effect Theatre Company (BETC) in 2006. The couple finished their tenure July 1, passing the baton to colleagues Mark Ragan and Jessica Robblee, BETC’s respective managing director and artistic director.
Jessica and Mark, both actors, directors and producers who co-founded Denver-based theater company Clover & Bee Productions earlier this year, will continue Clover & Bee as an arm of BETC. Clover & Bee will highlight more than just theater, including one-off musical events, lectures, plus stage readings in Denver—Clover & Bee’s home theater is The Savoy. BETC will continue its four-yearly mainstage shows, including this fall’s productions of “Coal Country” and “The Belle of Amherst.”
“They’re very different pieces,” Jessica says of BETC’s fall shows. “That’s the kind of season I like to have, where you get a wild smorgasbord of experiences and stories.”
COAL COUNTRY
October 26 - November 19
at the Dairy Arts Center
“Coal Country” is a retelling of a 2010 explosion in a small West Virginia community that claimed 29 miners’ lives. BETC will be the first theater company to produce the play professionally outside of New York.
Over a 90-minute run time, nine actors recall the catastrophic event and its aftermath, their roles inspired
by the playwrights’ interviews with victims’ relatives. In what’s called documentarian or verbatim theater, the playwrights constructed around 95% of the production’s script directly from these interviews.
“You could not write monologues that are this beautiful,” Mark says. The play, he adds, is “about how the human spirit survives such an incredible tragedy.”
“I love meeting these people, the way they speak, the way they share how they met. They’re so specific and honest,” Jessica says. “It broadens our view of each other and engenders connections between people sitting in Boulder and people who might feel super far away. It takes that geographic space, socioeconomic space, or difference of field or difference of interest and, all of a sudden, we’re right here together.”
One of Jessica’s favorite things about “Coal Country” is how it centers on a group that people don’t often get to hear from. She says that, while “big coal” occasionally makes news headlines, the media rarely features individuals involved in the industry.
“Coal miners, like so many other segments of our society, are voiceless,” Mark says. This is a prominent theme in the play. “The powerful always win, or at least in the eyes of a lot of the disenfranchised.”

THE BELLE OF AMHERST
November 2 - 12 at the Millibo Art Theatre in Colorado Springs, November 22 - 26 at the Dairy Arts Center
Jessica plays Emily Dickinson in this one-woman show about the poet’s career and life. “The Belle of Amherst” was Clover & Bee’s first production, which Jessica and Mark are now reprising with BETC (appropriate, considering the pair named Clover & Bee after a line in one of Emily Dickinson’s poems).
After Clover & Bee’s initial production of “The Belle of Amherst,” Jessica has been nominated for the 2023 Colorado Theatre Guild's Henry Awards. For the BETC production, Jessica once again portrays the poet’s humor and how she defied societal norms throughout her life.
Though Emily Dickinson grew up in a religious family, “Her worship happened more through her connection with nature,” Jessica says. “That was a huge rule to break in her time, and it was a huge rule to break that she didn’t get married.”
“Everybody calls her a recluse. She wasn’t really a recluse,” Mark says of the poet. “She just decided that the only way to be truly liberated was to be liberated in her mind, so she built a world for herself where she could enjoy that freedom.”
Though Emily Dickinson lived over 150 years ago, Jessica says her story is still relevant today. “She deals with universal things: How do I balance what I dream of doing with the world’s demands? How do I deal with losing people that I love so deeply? How do I stand my ground and love people at the same time?”

The motto at January Coffee in downtown Boulder is “Great Coffee is for Everyone”—and they really mean it. A multi-roaster specialty coffee shop serving a curated selection of their favorite roasters from all around the country, January Coffee was born from a desire to pair amazing coffee and tea with an inspired food program (Aussie-style).
Its love for preparing, tasting and enjoying coffee with others is what fuels the desire to build a community around their coffee shop. Offering handcrafted signature beverages and high-quality
and thoughtfully sourced teas, January Coffee also has a bangin’ brunch program. It's a coffee program first and foremost, but self-proclaimed foodies second. Their mission overall is to bring people together through genuine hospitality and knowing that at the end of the day, it's not about the liquid in the cup, but the people that are drinking it.
Talking with John, founder and owner of January Coffee, his excitement and passion for the art of making coffee is palpable and infectious. Born and raised in Boulder, John spent nearly two decades working in various coffee shops in Los Angeles. He managed several different specialty coffee shops, including beloved multi-roaster, Fix Coffee (RIP), then spent years in coffee sales & training for highly esteemed roasters. But of course, all roads seem to lead back to Boulder, and John came back to his hometown with his cup now overflowing with knowledge and experience in the coffee industry.
At January Coffee, they are extremely proud to serve Onyx Coffee Lab—a powerhouse leader in the industry and the most decorated,

award-winning specialty coffee roaster in the country—as the ongoing house roaster, while having two additional rotating roasters on the lineup, making them a multi-roaster coffee shop. Most coffee enthusiasts probably know what that is, but as a begrudgingly coffee avoider, John broke it down for me: “Being a multiroaster concept means that we don’t serve just one roaster here, rather we offer three different roasters, each with their own unique approach to sourcing and roasting,” he explains. “Some roast to maximize the natural sweetness in coffee, some accentuate the sparkling natural fruit acids that make a cup pop. One roaster may source coffees that are more chocolatey, nutty and approachable while another may seek out fruity, floral or funky offerings.”
With the “farm to cup” idea in mind, January Coffee is unique in its specific and curated selection of the producers, roasters and baristas involved that impact the experience of the people who drink their coffee. “With hundreds of amazing roasters spread out all over the world it can be difficult to find a place to experience all that the coffee industry has to offer,” says John. “January Coffee’s
goal is to curate the best of these roasters and consistently cycle through their coffee lineups so that there is always a new coffee to try, a new taste adventure to embark on.” The space itself in Boulder is designed to be bright with a modern style but to feel comfortable and cozy. John describes how the downstairs has a bustling big city cafe feel while the loft seating area has more of a homey feel, like you’re sitting in your best friend's living room.
The thing that makes January Coffee unique is not just one thing but the full equation of all the little things that make up a great experience. “The greatest compliment we receive is that people love the 'vibe'—an intangible thing that can’t be pinpointed but is clearly felt,” says John. “We aim to serve the highest quality coffees and delicious brunch foods served in a welcoming and unpretentious environment.”
“We put a big focus on making the work environment fun and our staff excels at fun,” says John. “When the folks behind the bar are having fun, it rubs off on our customers. One of our core values is ‘if we’re not having fun, we’re doing it wrong’ and that can be felt at January.”
