Time To Make a Summer Bucket List
I hope this letter finds you lying outside, soaking in some muchneeded sunshine.
Being from California, I’m secretly always ready to move away from the winter months and back into the longer, brighter and warmer months of summer. I recently moved back to Colorado after an 8-month hiatus, and I came back refreshed and rejuvenated—and with a list of a million things I want to do. Alpine lakes, hot springs, mining towns, mountain towns, sand dunes, and 14ers: the sheer variety of things to do and ways to get outside in Colorado is magnificent. Speaking of... anyone in the mood to hit Rocky Mountain National Park this weekend?
We hope some of the pages in our July issue will help you make the most of this season. And even if summer doesn't mean three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, “adults”) we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off your Colorado summer bucket list. Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of Boulder this summer!

“Wow. The right color change can be like a pain-free remodel - without even pounding a nail.
We needed to replace our outdated windows and took the opportunity to change our 20 year old colors, too. Richard went to the paint store for samples and overheard Tami Maurer talking with her Benjamin Moore rep. She was so knowledgeable and friendly, Richard got her card. We planned to get bids, but skipped right past and hired her! We’ve worked with other painters, good ones, but it’s always ‘give me the colors’. That’s one of the big differences with Maurer. So collaborative, like a fellow professional. Such a good eye, good sounding board and communicator. That’s what makes Tami special. For the colors, we went with a warm, earthy dark gray/green and charcoal gray with white window trim. A stark contrast from the previous creamy yellow and sage green. Friends have asked us: ‘Did you remodel?’. Very stunning.”

END OF AN AUDI R8 ERA
ARTICLE BY JESSICA MORDACQ THE
We are in the final stages of the R8’s final production model year as Audi will discontinue the R8 model lineup. The R8 has been an iconic representation of the Audi brand for over 15 years.
The model was born from a Le Mans concept vehicle in 2003. Rarely does the concept car translate closely to the actual production vehicle, but the R8 did when it debuted in 2007. The vehicle launched with a potent V-8 mid-engine platform and later evolved to a V-10.
The last of the Audi R8 lineup will be sent off with five configurations, one of which is a limited edition GT Model. Only 333 units will be released worldwide. The GT will be offered exclusively in a rear-wheel drive platform with a naturally aspirated V-10 motor outputting over 600 horsepower. This platform launches the car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds.
Driver's Notebook
The interior of the GT presents a no-nonsense look, with luxury amenities present, but secondary to the sporty functionality. Black and red shower the interior of the vehicle. A sequential number will be the focal point of the center console, letting clients and their passengers know they are one of just a few who get to be a part of this vehicle’s poetic send-off.
Audi Flatirons is excited about the nostalgia of the reincarnated GT but sad for the vehicle’s ultimate departure from production.
The 2023 Audi R8 starts at $158,600. Visit AudiFlatirons.com for availability, as supplies on R8 models are limited

Summertime is here and that means that there is an even more bountiful plethora of unique activities to enjoy in Boulder County. For Eric Reed, owner of Acme Fine Goods, the area is a vibrant, exciting playground just waiting to be explored.
“We live in an amazing time and place,” says Eric. “We could be hiking before work, hosting a meeting from a trailhead and signing contracts at a mountain retreat. From local table fare to dancing to live music all on the same day. There is no shortage of fun to be had.”
So how can Boulderites best outfit themselves for peak enjoyment of all these summertime activities? Eric notes that it’s hard to find the ideal apparel but not impossible.
Enter Acme Fine Goods, the fashion and outdoor business that Eric opened in Louisville in 2019 to help bring high-quality, approachable style to the Boulder community.
“I want each piece you buy from us to be one that stands up to the rigors of an adventurous life and to be the piece that you reach for first,” says Eric.
Acme Fine Goods offers apparel from brands around the world including Norway, Japan, France, Belgium and the U.S. Having recently celebrated its fourth anniversary, it’s a business that thrives on its relationships throughout the community and with its brand partners. Through its “fine goods, less bad” mantra, the team at Acme works to help customers discover a unique aesthetic through clothing items that are wholly distinct.
To help outfit Boulderites for some of the adventures they may be setting off on this summer, Eric has rounded up his recommendations for the apparel to pair with three exciting local outings.

INTO THE
When it comes to getting dressed for one of Boulder County’s many available outdoor adventures, Eric notes that blending the right technical elements with the best, most comfortable materials makes all the difference. Choosing clothing with breathability, stretch and the most functional pockets is key, while materials should be tough enough to withstand the chosen activity while still providing flexibility. The goal is a comfortable, durable selection that exudes an effortless style.

Casual and fun is the vibe synonymous with Louisville, and this can be translated into the ideal apparel for an evening taking in the town’s dining, breweries, live music and many other activities. ON THE ROAD AGAIN
While hitting the road to explore Boulder County’s sprawling backyard is exciting, Eric notes that it can be taxing on your wardrobe. Simplicity, versatility and comfort are key so that you can enjoy both the journey and the destination, whether you find yourself partaking in a roadside dinner, dipping your toes in a mountain river, popping into an old-school café in the backroads, sipping at a far-off dive bar or perusing a treasure-filled vintage store.

SAFER CYCLING IN BOULDER
NONPROFIT CYCLISTS 4 COMMUNITY HAS BEEN ADVOCATING FOR CYCLISTS IN BOULDER COUNTY SINCE 2013.
ARTICLE BY CASSIDY RITTER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTT CRADY
GIVING BACK | HEALTH + WELLNESS 54
With more than 300 miles of bikeway in the Boulder Valley, the area is home to thousands of cyclists and, in the summer months, draws in even more riders. Although there are several off-road paths, some rides require the use of a bike lane on heavily vehicle-trafficked roads such as US 36.
The city and county of Boulder are working to improve bicycle safety for visitors and residents by building out a bicycle network, but one local organization has been at it since 2013 before officially becoming a 503(c) nonprofit in 2015.
Cyclists 4 Community, or C4C, aims to make roads friendlier by improving the relationship between cyclists and motorists in Boulder County. C4C is a home-grown organization led by area cyclists, including Ed Kuh, who serves as the nonprofit’s president.
“The cyclists always lose when it comes to any kind of an incident with a car or truck,” Ed says. “So whatever we could do — if we can partner with the communities and get them to recognize that cyclists are not freeloaders on the roads, that they pay taxes, they participate in the community — just makes it a little more friendly and lowers stress for everybody.”
Creating awareness is key, Ed says. C4C does this by partnering with Boulder County organizations, businesses and government entities to improve policy, receive grants and more.
The nonprofit donated $30,000 to Boulder County to help them receive a federal grant to conduct a feasibility study for a separated bikeway between Boulder and Lyons. Ed says this stretch of US 36 is the busiest highway in the state in terms of the number of motorists and cyclists.
The feasibility study is underway and expected to be complete by the end of the year, but that’s not all C4C is working on. The organization has numerous infrastructure projects in the works

and wants to conduct a similar study along several other popular roadways, including CO-66 from Lyons to Longmont and US 287 from Longmont to Louisville/Lafayette.
Not all work is done behind the scenes, however. C4C worked with cyclists and business owners to place porta potties in areas where cyclists typically ride. This amenity, which can be found at The Mercantile in Jamestown, helps keep the community clean and builds a good relationship between cyclists, business owners and the community.
“We just started looking around and we’ve identified some key areas [where more porta potties could go] and we just expanding it out,” Ed says. “It wasn’t a grand strategy. It was a need and we’re just doing it, and it makes everybody feel better.”
C4C was also critical in implementing signs on county roads reminding drivers when and how to pass cyclists on the road. These “3 feet to pass” signs can be seen throughout the county and on a lit-up variable messaging sign along US 36.
When asked about expanding beyond Boulder County, Ed says C4C wanted to focus on an area it could make a difference.
“We think we’ve had a good pretty good impact,” Ed says. “We’ve got so much more work to do but we’ve been fortunate that we have supportive elected officials and transportation officials as well. … If we do this other places, we’d be fighting an uphill battle.”
While most C4C events have already taken place this year, Ed says to keep an eye on the organization’s website for summer group rides. He added that C4C is always looking for volunteers, donations and community input, especially to help identify other Boulder County areas ripe for cyclist improvement.

ROADWAY SAFETY TIPS
FOR CYCLISTS:
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Always use tail lights and headlights, even during the day.
• Be mindful of cars piling up behind you and move over when you can.
FOR MOTORISTS:
• Don’t drive distracted and stay off cell phones.
• When passing cyclists, give them three feet of space between the shoulder and the side mirror.
• Slow down when passing cyclists.

Growing up, Dr. Priya Uppal hated going to the dentist.
“I was a really anxious patient,” she says. “Every time I went, I was expecting pain, expecting to be told I’m not doing something right, just expecting to feel bad while I was there.”
Now, Priya uses her past experiences as a reminder of the environment she seeks to eliminate as leader of the Incredible Smiles dentistry team in Boulder.
Priya began her role at Incredible Smiles a year and a half ago after meeting its founder, Dr. Lori Kemmet, by chance and covering for her while she was on vacation. The two bonded over a shared desire to provide patients with extremely personalized care that not only improves their smiles but also their well-being and confidence. Approaching their work as artistry and treating someone’s smile as a larger part of total body health is paramount. With a primary focus on cosmetic dentistry and neuromuscular dentistry, Priya typically sees one patient at a time, getting to know them, why they’ve come to her and what they’re trying to accomplish. This is a vastly different method compared to the corporate dentistry world that can center on meeting quotas and cutting costs, often at the expense of patients.

“We custom craft a smile for someone based on their facial appearance and based on their personality,” Priya says. “Characteristics like whether it's masculine or feminine really play into how a smile is designed. When you take all of those things into consideration, that's when you can really do something spectacular. You're giving them not only a beautiful smile but also one that suits them and doesn't look artificial.”
Recently, Priya designed veneers for a man who was extremely self-conscious about his smile. When she saw him for a follow-up appointment, he described how his wife notices how much more he smiles and how he holds it just a little bit longer if someone tells a joke. Seeing that transformation from within and how a change in appearance can make someone feel, Priya says, is what drives her to continue giving dedicated attention to each of her patients.
Neuromuscular dentistry procedures focus on overall jaw function. Another patient Priya currently treats was experiencing TMJ issues and temporarily relieving her associated pain with routine Botox injections. Priya later discovered that the root cause of the pain was an unstable bite that Invisalign would likely fix. In the six months since starting the teeth straightening, the patient hasn’t experienced pain and hasn’t needed Botox.
“I wanted to give her the type of function that she can maintain over her lifetime,” Priya explains.
Having candid conversations with patients from the first complimentary consultation is what sets Incredible Smiles apart. It allows Priya and her team of five to fully understand what the patient needs and how to achieve their goals. Their practice is so widely regarded that it’s not only patients in Boulder or Denver who make appointments — clients will drive in from Wyoming and fly in from states as far as Florida. Priya says she sees patients of all ages, from teenagers to people in their 80s and 90s. She’s also noticing longtime clients bringing in their children because many cosmetic dental concerns are genetic. Rave referrals are usually how the practice acquires new patients.
“We devote all of our time and energy into one person at a time,” Priya says. “I always wanted to be in an environment where I could provide really high-quality cosmetic care because that is my passion. Seeing the difference in someone’s confidence when you give them a smile that they're proud of is what I love.”

TESTIMONIAL:
"I’ve had veneers for the past 25 years. I had an unexpected gum surgery that required me to redo my upper veneers. My face has also changed (aged) over the 25 years, so I needed a refresh. I was apprehensive about being able to achieve a better result than what I already had. I went for a consultation with Dr. Uppal. She was honest about my potential results, and at the end of the day, she completely over-delivered. She meticulously took her time with my temporaries to make sure the end result was the absolute best it could be. She is truly a master at her craft, a scholar, an artist and a sculptor all in one. And she has an incredible team to back her up. The camaraderie of the staff is palpable. Lastly, Dr. Uppal has a lovely chair-side demeanor, and she is confident. I felt calm and safe through the many appointments needed to accomplish our result. She is simply the best." — Deborah

100 YEARS OF THE SINK
THE SINK’S NEW DOCUMENTARY BRINGS ITS HISTORY TO LIFE
ARTICLE BY KAILEY BEUERLEIN | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE SINK
CONTINUED > 71 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER JULY 2023
Going strong as one of the most famous college hangouts in America, The Sink in Boulder has a story to tell—well, definitely more than one.
Sitting at The Sink is getting a real taste of Boulder, accepting and comfortable and energetic at its core. The funky, family-owned landmark is more than just a menu; it's a community hub for Hill frequents, a late-night hangout and makes a burger that you know will hit the spot every time. The iconic watering hole attracts students, fans, alums and Boulder residents alike and stands tall as the oldest restaurant in Boulder. As The Sink hits 100 years of business this year, Pixel Mill Studios filmed and produced a documentary that will bring the history of The Sink to life. All you have to do is read the writing on the walls.
Initially built as a Sigma Nu Fraternity house around 1900, The Sink was sold and opened as Summer’s Sunken Gardens in 1923. It featured a sunken fountain in the middle of the dining room, which quickly gave the establishment its nickname: “The Sink.” Under new ownership in 1949, the name became official, with the restaurant opening up in the basement of the original house. And from there began The Sink’s long journey into infamy. In regards to the idea of making a documentary, Mark Heinritz, owner of The Sink, wanted to pay homage to the way The Sink has stood the test of time and evolved with the city of Boulder.
“We wanted to capture the long and storied history of a place that has had such a big impact on the lives of so many people and survived so many societal changes,” says Mark.
The low ceilings and graffiti-covered walls create a welcoming, homey environment that invites you in and encourages you to stay. The walls are infamously scribbled with names of visitors, all the way from CU graduates to visiting celebrities (I’ll spare you the Obama visit story—I’m sure you’ve heard it) that want to make their mark. Much of the success of The Sink is undeniable because of its location in a heavily pedestrian district but also because of its physical nature.
“It’s just so unique,” says Mark. “Another one will never be built.”
But more than the spot, what makes a restaurant a success is its people. When I asked Mark how Boulder’s culture and its students have impacted

the success of The Sink, I was answered with a simple: “It is the reason The Sink exists.”
“I think the movie will explain this in depth. Being 100 means that we have had generations of CU students. The legacy aspect is a driving force of the emotional attachment that so many people have to the Sink. There are families with four gener-
“We were hired to do a 10 to 15-minute video, so the final length of 30 minutes was a surprise to all of us—but there was just no way we could take out so many of the amazing stories that are in the finished film and do it justice,” says Bruce. “The owners of The Sink should be very proud of what they've helped to create; The Sink is truly a Boulder institution.”
ations of members that have all hung out here when they were in school. It’s really cool to see.”
In many ways, The Sink is the perfect subject for a documentary film. It’s unique, it has a long history deeply rooted in its hometown and people from different places living different lives feel connected to it. Producer Bruce Borowsky, of Boulder’s Pixel Mill Studios, felt that this project was a great fit for just those reasons. The food is also pretty easy to rave about.
“I moved to Boulder in 1990, and it feels like the Sink hasn't changed a bit,” says Bruce. “We filmed interviews with the usual suspects, the owners, the staff, the customers, but where it got fun was hearing stories from regular people—couples that met there, couples that got engaged there—and here it is, decades later, and they had these wonderful stories to share with us.”
The plethora of stories that come with The Sink’s history brought the biggest challenge in the documentary-making process: how could you decide which stories to include and which to skip?
Making this documentary also enabled the staff and people closest to the restaurant to learn more about The Sink’s long-standing run in Boulder.
“I knew quite a bit, but by getting the stories of people from different eras all together helped us fill in a lot of blanks,” says Mark. “I’m sure the movie could have gone on much longer but Bruce started pulling on a thread and ended up with a ball of yarn—he had to stop somewhere. But maybe we’ll get a Netflix series out of it,” Mark says with a smile. Anyone reading this have a Netflix connection?
As a CU grad myself, The Sink is ingrained in my college experience. Not just because I lived on the same street or because they have my favorite french fries in town but because of the relationships that were formed and friendships that flourished while sitting at that landmark. Congregating at the corner of 13th and Pennsylvania St., I always knew something fun was to follow. And it usually started with a really good burger.
The historical documentary premiered at Boulder Theatre on June 14. For more information, visit TheSink.com

Dermatology of the Rockies’ Newest Technology at the Body Contouring Center

Kristin Baird, MD, started Dermatology of the Rockies in 2011 after serving the dermatology needs of the Longmont and Estes Park communities since 2003. Today, Dr. Kristin Baird and five additional licensed providers offer medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology care to those in and around Boulder County.
Dermatology of the Rockies’ Body Contouring Center launched in 2019, focusing on whole body wellness treat- ments using the latest technologies. The first procedure they offered, CoolSculpting, is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that freezes and destroys fat cells. It is FDA-cleared for the treatment of stubborn fat in the abdomen, love handles, flanks, back, inner and outer thighs and chin.
“People are seeking non-invasive body contouring solutions where there’s little to no downtime,” says Raenell Wilkinson, aesthetics director. Raenell is a CCMA who has been nationally recognized as a Body Contouring Specialist, an Allergan AMI Faculty Member and National Trainer for CoolSculpting.
With its CoolSculpting success, the office has added several new body contouring devices, including Emface, EmsculptNeo, Emsella and Emtone. They also added two CoolSculpting Elite machines and now offer quad sculpting. These are non-surgical body contouring pro- cedures that use various technologies to target different areas of the body.
Researchers and developers that manufacture medical devices often reach out to Dr. Baird for input on emerging technologies and treatment protocols. Dermatology of the Rockies was one of the first offices in the United States to offer Emface technology. Emface is a non-surgical face lifting treatment that uses radiofrequency and electrical muscle stimulation to lift and tighten facial muscles and skin. EmsculptNeo promotes muscle building by using electromagnetic energy to contract muscles up to 20,000 times in a 30-minute session. Emsella, on the other hand, is a pelvic floor treatment that uses electro - magnetic energy to strengthen and tone the pelvic floor muscle, which helps improve stress incontinence and sexual wellness. Emtone is a body contouring and cellulite treatment that uses radio frequency energy to tighten and tone the skin on the hips, buttocks, abdomen, arms and legs.
Ellacor, a physician-operated device, is the newest addition to the Body Contouring Center, available to patients as of late June. Ellacor’s micro-coring technology is the first of its kind. The procedure is conducted without thermal or

laser-based energy, so damage to surrounding tissue is minimized, leading to quick healing and less than one week of downtime.
“Essentially, we’re taking hundreds of half-millimeter punch biopsies, purely extracting excess skin, which leads to tightening,” says Dr. Maxine Warren, a board-certified dermatologist, regarding Ellacor. She’s one of Dermatology of the Rockies’ three physicians and offers cosmetic and medical dermatological care treating a wide variety of skin concerns, including psoriasis, eczema and hair loss.
Ellacor is FDA-approved for the lower face and jowl area, where it can extract up to two square inches of skin per treatment. “Ellacor is exciting because there are not many effective non-surgical options available for this area,” Dr. Warren says. In the future, she expects Ellacor will be approved for treating the skin of the neck, above the knees and on the stomach for stretch marks. Oftentimes, patients come in to Dermatology of the Rockies seeking one type of treatment, only to realize they need a different solution. Because of this, consultations in the Body Contouring Center are complimentary.
“We educate people. We don’t recommend treatments that are not suitable for patient outcomes just to ‘sell,’” Raenell says. Each patient receives a customized treatment plan, focused on individual concerns and goals. “We proudly showcase our own patients’ before and after images on our website. It’s not only the technology; it’s our expert team of providers that may be even more important when considering treatment options.”

Starting as a small market where they sold goods and produce out of their truck beds, the Boulders Farmer's Market has grown into one of the busiest farmer's markets in Colorado. With a focus on health-forward foods grown by local merchants, the vendors that provide produce at the Boulder Farmer's Market are specially chosen through a vetting process. The qualities sought after in these vendors include producing their own products, vendors local to Colorado, and health-oriented vendors that stay clear of any artificial ingredients. The Boulder Farmer's Market is also dedicated to sustainability by creating zero waste, and they require the same commitment from their vendors.
Boulder County's Farmer's Market Communications and Marketing Director Frankie Ryder shared with us a mouth-watering recipe for your next barbecue: grassfed steak with chimichurri and tomato salad.
While you are prowling around the farmers market, you can purchase ingredients from local vendors to create this perfect summer recipe. Combining the two aspects of cooking that are necessary on a warm summer day, this recipe stands out as a local favorite.
Pair a home-grilled steak with a chimichurri sauce using fresh herbs and salad made from tomatoes picked right off the vine. Obtain grass-fed meat from Grama Grass and Livestock or enjoy a meat-free edition with king oyster mushrooms from Hazel Dell or MycoCosm Mushrooms. Shopping at Boulder Farmer's Market makes it too easy to purchase quality meat and produce with a healthy mindset. Try this out for the next time you're hanging out on the back patio and enjoying the start of this summer season!

BOULDER COUNTY’S FARMER’S MARKET GIVES US A RECIPE PERFECT FOR YOUR NEXT SUMMER SOIREE
89 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER JULY 2023
STEAK WITH CHIMICHURRI
Directions:
To make the steak and chimichurri:
Before firing up the grill, remove the steak from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature. Heat the grill on high and brush each side of the steak with extra-virgin olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Place the steak on the grill until slightly charred and browned, roughly 4 to 5 minutes. Flip the steak and continue to grill to your desired doneness. Remove the steak from the grill and tent loosely with aluminum foil to cool. While you wait for the steak’s temperature to reduce, begin the chimichurri by combining shallot with garlic, vinegar and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Let the mixture sit for ten minutes and then add in your fresh herbs. Slowly mix in the olive oil to finish. Once that’s all ready, slice your steak into strips and drizzle with chimichurri sauce. Serve with tomato and cucumber salad on the side.
Ingredients:
• 1 pound steak from Grama Grass & Livestock, grilled
• 1 shallot, finely chopped
• 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
• ¼ cup red wine vinegar from Healthy Harvest
• ½ cup chopped cilantro
• ¼ cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
• 1 tbsp. chopped oregano
• ¾ cup extra-virgin olive oil from Healthy Harvest
TOMATO AND CUCUMBER SALAD
Directions:
To make the salad:
Get a head start by prepping the salad first. In a mixing bowl, whisk the red onion and white vinegar and let sit for ten minutes. Then add in the olive oil and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Once mixed, toss in the cucumber.
Ingredients:
• 1.5 pounds fresh market tomatoes (your choice!), halved or quartered
• 1 locally-grown cucumber, sliced
• ¼ cup chopped red onion
• 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil from Healthy Harvest
• ¼ cup white vinegar from Healthy Harvest
• 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard

For Boulderites, the Street Art of SMiLE Is Endearingly Familiar, but the Artist Remains a Mystery

At Lucile’s Creole Cafe in downtown Boulder, the brunch waitlist generally overflows from the Victorian home’s waiting room onto the sidewalk outside, where, if you don’t get a spot on the bench, you’re left lingering around the block. But for lucky—and, importantly, observant—visitors, the wait includes a chance to spot an original collection of Boulder art.
Peering out from the side of an otherwise ordinary electrical box is a vibrant, immaculately detailed portrait of a lion,
Viewers must pause to make out the spelling, “SMiLE”.
The signature belongs to an anonymous, Boulder-based artist whose medium is the hidden corners and public surfaces of the city. The name is fitting for the artist's ethos, which is rooted in sharing joy and shedding egos.
“I want my street art to bring joy to people, to bring a surprised thrill to them when they randomly cross paths with a piece of my work on the streets,” the artist explains. “That's what it's all about for me, that's what I dream of when I finish a painting: countless people coming across the painting and being surprised, being shocked out of whatever they were ruminating about and coming to the present moment and feeling happy and light. I think that helping someone be present is the greatest gift that an artist has to give.”
SMiLE’s work is spread out across the city (and around the world—a fox in Paris, a kitty in New York City). The locations around Boulder vary, selected both for their significance to the artist, but also for their suitability thematically and technically as a medium.
Cedar & Hyde for hidden works. End up at Lolita’s and look for the artist’s rendering of a sweet fox and its cub,
next to two hanging bats and a couple cats, all punctuated by a cryptic signature.
Start at the east end of Pearl Street and you’ll find a portrait hidden outside Boxcar. Work your way to Lucile’s to see the lion, then on to Bohemian Biergarten to see a cat. Keep your eyes peeled near Dushanbe Tea House, Sundown Saloon, Rio Grande and
among others. Along the way, you’ll notice animals weigh heavily in SMiLE’s work, from a bright teal dog with perked ears near Zoe Ma Ma to a black cat near Boulder bookstore.
“I love the wildness of animals,” the artist explains. “I grew up an only child in Boulder and spent countless hours with cats; many of my best friends have been cats. Most of the cats that I stencil are cats that I know, either my boy

Hermes or else the kitties of friends and family. And this love of cats extends into big cats as well. After spending so much time with cats it feels like I can read their expressions and body language as well as I can read a person’s.”
That being said, SMiLE’s signature can be found next to some human portraits around town as well; walls near Boulder High or the library having served as a gallery for captivating portraits of brightly-hued faces.
“For my portraits, I choose people that light a fire in my heart, people that elevate me to a higher level through the legacy that they've created either as artists, singers, friends, authors, rebels, revolutionaries and poets,” they say. “If I'm going to spend days and days focused on the nuances of a person’s features, if I'm really getting deep into it and studying the way that their cheekbones drift into their dimples, then I need it to be a situation where my inspiration grows from a flame to a bonfire.”
The meticulously detailed paintings are made under the cover of night, using stencils, which take anywhere from 20 to 75 hours (and sometimes even longer) to make. The actual paintings, however, take merely “a handful of minutes” the artist reports. For the artist, the speed of the stencil is all part of the allure.
“They're an ingenious way to put beautiful art onto the streets.”

With a name like Hey Kiddo, you know the restaurant is going to be fun. With the team behind The Wolf’s Tailor, Bruto, and Basta running the show, you also know it’s going to be pretty darn tasty.
Hey Kiddo lives up to its quirky name, from a menu that includes everything from Korean fried chicken to caviar to bucatini, to a secret bar in the back (OK Yeah), to its unconventional third-floor perch above Tennyson Street. This isn’t a quiet restaurant—not literally or figuratively—and that’s kind of the point. Hey Kiddo doesn’t care about conventional restaurant expectations; it’s there to give you the kind of bold, brash food and drink they want to make. Which also, you know, tastes really, really good.
KiddoHey
The menu will change with the season, but in early spring it featured a dry-aged carpaccio of buttery, shaved meat atop an umami-rific brie for just a touch of funkiness; a wagyu short rib in a sweet apple pear soy glaze that was so tender it sliced like the finest steak; grilled trumpet mushrooms with a bitter melon ponzu spike; and off the specials menu, a super savory okonomiyaki, or a Japanese “pancake” of wheat flour, cabbage, scallions, and duck, topped with waving bonito flakes. The okonomiyaki was large and filling, an excellent starter if it’s available.

Other favorites included the bucatini with fermented black bean sauce. (How often do you see that combo?) The hand-made noodles pack in-your-face levels of flavor—in the best possible way—and are loaded up with crunchy peanuts and a zing of cilantro.
The most whimsical dish is probably the shaken rice—inspired by collaborating chef Deuki Hong’s mother’s childhood lunches. Her mom would carefully pack her lunchbox with sticky rice, only for her to jostle it around in her backpack and open up a mess come lunch. Hey Kiddo’s version first arrives at your table in a pristine gold box with artfully placed pork belly, cured egg yolk, and whatever is left over from other dishes. (They’re all about reducing food waste here and using everything they’ve got in clever ways.) But then the server closes the box and gives it a vigorous shake, resulting in a beautifully delicious mess.
Drinks are also unexpected and fun, like the popular Fantômas, a tangy, turquoise mix of vodka, golden russet apple cider, white wine, lemon and egg white, and the Tragic Kingdom, a kicky blend of tequila, fennel liqueur, jalapeño, muskmelon, coconut and lime.
For such a loud concept, the space itself is fairly understated, probably to better emphasize the food, drink, and overall lively experience. Tables, chairs and décor are sleek and minimalist, and everything comes together around the open centerpiece kitchen.
You may have noticed that I haven’t defined what type of restaurant Hey Kiddo is in terms of the cuisine it serves. That’s because this spot is themed more around quirk and play than any specific region or technique. And creating a restaurant based around quirk and play rather than geographic inspiration? Well, that’s just plain fun.

Originally from Colombia, singer-songwriter and producer Nico Martinez has taken the local music scene by storm. His music career started as a guitar duo, consisting of Nico and his father, Luis Eduardo Martinez, Colombian architect and music aficionado, whom he considers the most influential person in jumpstarting his musical career.
Playing together at a local Colombian restaurant, Nico grew to perform solo shows at local bars, restaurants, hotels and more. For the past 5 years, he and his band have focused on bringing a new, upbeat and fresh take on Latin Fusion music to Denver. Playing at our Boulder Lifestyle event at Corrida on June 1st, I was lucky enough to get to know him a bit more.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERFORMANCES LIKE?
We strive to create very unique, energetic and upbeat music experiences to keep people grooving and provide a good dynamic of slow to medium tempo songs. The fusion of sounds we perform, all with live instrumentation and vocals, is unique to our band and our playing style. We perform songs both in English
and Spanish to expand our audience reach and relate to people of all cultural backgrounds!
WHAT SORT OF EVENTS HAVE YOU PLAYED?
In the past, we have been booked for events at the Botanic Gardens, played at a variety of high-end local restaurants and hotels (Toro, My Neighbor Felix, The Maven, Dairy Block, The Clayton, Stanley Marketplace), performed for Latin-inspired breweries (Raices, Cheluna) and small music festivals as well as private organization events in the Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs area.
More importantly, our crew of musicians, who share a diverse background of Colombian, Mexican and Cuban, have over 20 years of combined live music experience, mixing and setting up sound for the gigs. Our main priority is putting on a stellar performance while making sure that the client and the venue are represented through us!
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS OF BEING A PROMINENT MEMBER OF THE DENVER MUSIC SCENE?
My mission is to infuse the Denver community with love and creative sound, dissolve cultural barriers and forge magical moments while striving to be an inspiration to others. I envision myself as a multicultural leader and artist, and hope to influence the Denver community to feel connected, inspired and enriched by the diverse atmosphere that music can create!
