Lookin’ Fine At Fifty

For many years I had heard the fables, listened to the bootleg tapes and dreamed of what it must be like to hear Sam Bush’s mandolin strings reverberate off of the canyon walls in Telluride. In 2013, with my wife, Katie, our three-year-old son, August, and two-year-old daughter, Farrah, I finally made my first pilgrimage to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. This was a monumental year for the event, as it was the fortieth-anniversary celebration.

We planned the trip months in advance, and I was in charge of finding lodging for our group, which included two other families. While scouring Airbnb the winter prior, I saw a listing title that instantly had me sold, “Former Home Of Grateful Dead Manager, Bill Graham.” The listing showed the sprawling, 6,000-sq.ft. Victorian home, with a creek running through the property. Another photo showed the living room with a large leather couch that Bill Graham had personally designed for the Grateful Dead members to lounge on while visiting. The house was situated right in town and perfect for our large group. Was it out of our budget? “Absolutely!” Did that stop me from booking? “No!”

As we made our final approach into town, the stress of seven hours on the road with two toddlers all faded. There is nothing quite like seeing Telluride for the first time. The scenery is truly breathtaking. We pulled into the driveway with expectations set to ELEVEN! A nice man greeted us at the entrance and welcomed us into the home. We quickly discovered that two of the seven bedrooms advertised on the listing were occupied by the caretaker and his daughter, only separated by an interior door. I thought to myself, “Well, I guess we can put a few of the kids on the couches, no problem.” As we continued the tour, I began counting the bedrooms in my head. One of the “bedrooms” was simply a 4’ by 6’ outcropping of the living room, where a record player and fold-out cushion chair sat on the floor.

The most notable memory of that house was a late-night acoustic jam session we had on the deck. As we went into the Jerry Garcia classic, Sugaree, the light in the upstairs bathroom began to turn on and off, intermittently. All of the adults were outside, and after double-checking all of the kids, it was confirmed that they were all totally passed out in their beds. Maybe it was a faulty electrical circuit, but we all like to think that was Jerry’s way of thanking us for the tune. While the house on Galena Street wasn’t exactly as advertised, we still made memories that will forever be remembered.

For those of you who are joining our family this month for the FIFTIETH anniversary of Telluride Bluegrass, we hope your travels are safe, and lifetime memories are made.

REFINED SENIOR LIVING IN BOULDER'S ICONIC NEIGHBORHOOD

Academy Mapleton Hill

Academy Mapleton Hill is a highly anticipated community for refined senior living, including independent and assisted living residences, that will open its doors summer of 2023 in what is arguably considered Boulder’s most desirable neighborhood. Covering sixteen acres on 4th St. and Mapleton Avenue, Academy Mapleton Hill is within walking distance to the area’s top shopping and dining on the Pearl Street Mall, and within a stone’s throw of some of Boulder’s best hiking trails, right next to the Mt. Sanitas trailhead.

The elegant independent residences consist of apartment buildings and a handful of cottages, all on a sophisticated landscape with stunning views. The grounds consist of multiple dining rooms, a grand hall, an extensive library, a fitness center, a state-of-the-art spa and a 75-foot-long pool. Wellness programs will include yoga, water aerobics, balance training and personal training, all based on the individual resident’s comfort and fitness level. On the stretches of charming walking paths between buildings, you’ll find several gathering places with fire pits and dog-play areas.

Since 1998, Academy Boulder has been serving the community with its Academy University Hill and Academy Bella Vista locations. The new Mapleton Hill location promises to continue to build on the reputation and culture

that has grown in their senior living communities. When asked about Academy Boulder’s success, co-founder Gary Berg lists four essential ingredients for success: a commitment to excellent food, small-sized properties, local ownership and iconic historical sites.

The cuisine at Academy Mapleton Hill will be organic and locally driven and will offer a variety of experiences inspired by healthy living. Academy Mapleton Hill will open its doors with Executive Chef Alberto Sabbadini at the helm, a native of Friuli, Italy, who has cooked his way through Venice, Cortina, Sardinia, Switzerland, and Istanbul before being recruited to Aspen, and ultimately Boulder. Culinary Director Fabio Stefani brings more than a decade of experience in owning and operating his Nob Hill Grille in San Francisco. 25 years ago, Joe Romano (The Med, Brasserie Ten Ten, Via Perla) teamed up with co-founder Gary Berg to open Academy University Hill.

NOW OPEN HOME SERVICES 44
“We fell in love with the site. It represents a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to have city open space and historic Mapleton Hill as our only neighbors.”

“Food is where community begins,” says Berg. “When we opened our doors 25 years ago, we actually knew very little about retirement communities, but we knew the industry had a subpar reputation for food… I knew that with Joe’s expertise, we could do much better and I believe we have.”

Collectively, the entire Academy culinary leadership team brings 155 years of restaurant experience to Academy Boulder.

The smaller size of Academy’s sites contributes to the connection that Academy’s team members make with the residents. Academy University Hill has 53 residences and Academy Mapleton Hill will have 91.

“I know the connection between our team members who work here and the residents who live here is so much tighter because our small size ensures that everyone knows each other,” says Berg. “It really is like family and that, in turn, has led to team member retention rates that defy industry norms. We’ve even been voted Boulder’s Best Employer three separate times.”

The importance of local ownership and loyalty to the Boulder community also play an important role in the Academy philosophy. This new campus marks Academy’s third Boulder location. Jay Hebb, a Boulder entrepreneur and business partner in Academy Mapleton Hill, believes that local ownership generates a

greater sensitivity to the uniqueness of Boulder.

“Five of our six partners are long-time Boulder residents, with our sixth partner nearby in Denver,” says Hebb, who procured the Academy Mapleton Hill site nearly ten years ago. “We fell in love with the site. It represents a once-in-alifetime opportunity to have city open space and historic Mapleton Hill as our only neighbors.”

Academy Mapleton Hill has several structures up for local historical landmarking this year.

“Our iconic, historic locations make it a joy to come to work every day and play an essential role in creating unique, wonderful places to live. It’s been an honor and a privilege to restore and steward these amazing sites,” says Berg.

Academy Mapleton Hill will certainly be a welcome addition to the Mapleton Hill neighborhood and the Boulder community.

VISITING THE NORTH DENVER NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE BUSINESSES PRESERVING ITS HISTORY

A Day Out in Berkeley

OPEN HOUSE | LIFE + CULTURE
50
CONTINUED > Bakery Four 51 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER JUNE 2023

The Berkeley neighborhood started in 1863 with a handful of humble homesteads. As the 1900s approached, nearly 500 people lived in what was then the Town of North Denver (which became Berkeley in 1898). Today, Berkley is an unincorporated, census-designated part of the northwest Denver-Aurora area with a population of over 12,000.

Historical locations, like local couple John and Mary’s Elitch’s Gardens–which opened on 38th and Tennyson Street in 1890 as one of the first zoos West of Chicago and Denver’s first botanic garden–helped popularize the area. Elitch Theater, still a venue today, opened in 1892 as the first to show movies in the Denver area.

Over 100 years ago, Berkeley’s Tennyson Street was full of bakeries like Bakery Four, a modern-looking cafe serving coffee, bread and baked goods, only open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday through Sunday. Over time, the neighborhood’s grocery stores were joined by the likes of Small Batch, a craft wine, beer and liquor store.

Where beauty shops once stood downtown, modern hair salons and Sarah O. Jewelry have taken over, and tailors have turned into curated menswear stores like Berkeley Supply. Though Elitch Gardens is now an amusement park located in Denver proper, the Berkeley neighborhood, which has been dedicated to arts and culture since its inception, continues to prioritize the two and preserve its history.

“You can spend all day going to different local businesses, mostly momand-pop shops,” says Alex Balkovatz, marketing manager for Sarah O. Jewelry. The everyday and fine jewelry store opened on Tennyson Street as Ooh! Aah! Jewelry in 2006 and rebranded in 2015. “It has that small-town feeling right in the middle of Denver, which I think is unique to Tennyson Street.”

Because of Tennyson Street’s walkable charm, “we want people to see Tennyson Street as not a stop for lunch, not a stop to pick up something from the store, but more of an experience of our whole block and of our neighborhood,” Alex says.

On a blue-sky afternoon, typical of Colorado spring, people walk and jog the streets of North Denver’s Berkeley neighborhood with their dogs. César Chávez Park’s playground is full of children, along with adults sitting in the surrounding area’s green grass as people pass by, stopping in shops on their lunch breaks.  Hotels, breweries, restaurants and coffee shops line Tennyson Street, the main thoroughfare in town that seems to constantly change. But many local businesses occupy charming old buildings that went up around Berkley’s inception, and hope to keep them that way.

Though Tennyson Street and the surrounding neighborhoods remain walkable, they have changed quite a bit. In 2006, there were only a handful of boutiques on Tennyson Street, says Alex. Since, Tennyson Street has given way to more restaurants and condos. With this development, Sarah O. Jewelry’s founder, along with the Tennyson Berkeley Business Association that she’s a part of, recognize the gentrification and turnover happening in the city and aim to conserve its past.

The Berkeley neighborhood works toward this by balancing new demographics with serving “the community that has been by our side and has been walking our streets for years and years,” Alex says. “Tennyson Street does come with so much history that I know it’s really of importance for a lot of business owners to maintain that same feeling and not let it be overrun by new businesses and condos.”

To do this, Sarah O. Jewelry and several other local businesses work toward making sure that “Tennyson is still a place for people from all walks of life,” Alex says. “We really pride ourselves on being somewhere that anyone can walk into and feel like they belong. I think that captures the spirit of Tennyson as well. I think that’s what we fight to keep, and what keeps people around.”

FIFTY YEARS

FIFTY YEARS OF FESTIVAL!

OF FESTIVAL!

BACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE 56

Tucked deep into a box canyon, within the San Juan range, rests one of Colorado’s most prized treasures. Telluride is known for many things; among them, jagged mountains that loom overhead, waterfalls that effortlessly cascade down ten thousand-foot rock faces and the meandering flow of the San Miguel River that dances through town.

While these natural marvels set the visuals, the soul of Telluride is woven through the strings of banjos, mandolins, fiddles and guitars. What started as a small, community picnic and concert in 1973, has evolved into one of the longest-running and most nostalgic music festivals in the country. This Father’s Day weekend, over twelve thousand music lovers will make their pilgrimage to the 50th annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

As one would suspect, bluegrass music has always been the heartbeat of TBF, but the range of talent over the years has included stars from many genres, including Johnny Cash, Tenacious D, Brandi Carlile, Mumford & Sons and Emmylou Harris. Each year, there are staples like Sam Bush, who is widely considered the “unofficial” mayor of Telluride Bluegrass, and newcomers alike. Yasmin Williams is a 25-yearold acoustic fingerstyle guitarist, who will be making her first trip to TBF this June.

“I’m hoping to take a family member or friend to Telluride," Yasmin says. "I’m so excited to soak in the experience of being there, and of course, I’ll need a hiking buddy. I’m also very excited to meet all the fans and festival attendees at Telluride Bluegrass. This will be my first time in Telluride, and my first time performing at the festival. I am honored to be a part of the 50th anniversary!”

After the event changed ownership several times in the 1970s and 1980s, Craig Ferguson purchased the festival in 1988. Zach Tucker has been the Director of Operations for Planet Bluegrass for the last six years, which is the Lyonsbased production company behind TBF. “Planning this one has definitely been on our radar for a while now,” Zach says. “Craig has been curating the lineup since early 2022."

To help commemorate the golden anniversary of TBF, Zach and the Planet Bluegrass team will have an immersive history experience set up for this year’s attendees. According to Zach, fans will be able to experience fifty years of history through video, audio and photography archives. Additionally, concert posters from all previous years will be available for purchase.

Peter Rowan is a legendary musician and songwriter who gained notoriety as a member of Jerry Garcia’s bluegrass outfit Old And In The Way in 1973.

“Sam Bush told me about Telluride Bluegrass and helped me get booked in 1976 or so,” Peter says. He has been back dozens of times throughout the years and attributes the location and the comradery amongst the musicians as to what makes TBF so special.

“The setting in the Telluride Canyon is so inspiring. It uplifts the music, and in performance, we all expand our awareness to fill the environment and to fill our lungs with clean air,” Peter exclaims.

The timing of TBF always revolves around the summer solstice, with main stage concerts in the Town Park starting on Thursday (late morning), and running

daily until Sunday night. Since lodging is sparse in a town the size of Telluride, multiple parks and open spaces are utilized for camping during the event. Camping in Town Park opens a full week prior to the official start of the festival, and you better believe that there are hundreds of diehards who eagerly wait for the gate to drop. It’s not uncommon at all to see someone like Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon) playing on the main stage, in front of 10,000 people—then catching him at 3:00 am with ten to twelve other pickers, jamming outside a tent in Town Park.

Sarah Jorosz, whose 2023 performance will be her eighth, also attended TBF as a spectator as a child.

“I have fond memories of driving up from Texas with my family. It was mind-bendingly beautiful and the lineup was a mix of all of my favorite music. I specifically remember a performance by The Decemberists circa 2005 that blew me away.”

When asked about some of the most memorable moments of her Telluride performances, Sarah notes, “There are so many touchstone moments, but it would either have to be my very first performance at the festival in 2007, which in many ways felt like the spark that lit my career.”

Telluride is also where Sarah met 10-time Grammy Award-winning producer, Gary Paczosa. The two have collaborated on numerous albums throughout her career. Additionally, I’m With Her, which is an all-star side project made up of Sarah, Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) and Aoife O’donovan, was also born at Telluride Bluegrass, in 2014.

Another annual TBF tradition is the band competition. Bands from around the country submit applications to Planet Bluegrass, and 10-12 are selected each year to perform. The winning band receives cash and prizes, as well as an invitation to

perform a full set at the following year’s festival. In 2006, Greensky Bluegrass, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, won the competition. Now, seventeen years later, the band has performed on the Main Stage thirteen times.

Paul Hoffman, mandolinist and primary songwriter for GSBG, recounts the nostalgia of Telluride.

“Telluride is a sanctuary. Driving into that valley is special, every time. I think of the band competition, and so many other memories all at once.”

Greensky Bluegrass will headline the Friday lineup at this year’s sold-out festival. “That stage is still overwhelming. It feels like home but also seems unreal at times. There is a real blessing to playing at night because the spectacular view doesn’t distract me,” Paul adds.

Headliners for this year’s event include Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, The String Cheese Incident, Gregory Alan Isakov and The Sam Bush Band. Although tickets have been sold out since the day they went on sale in December 2022, music lovers can stream live audio, from anywhere in the world, via Koto.org website. Of course, if you believe in miracles, perhaps there is a ticket out in the universe somewhere with your name on it. To borrow a quote from the late Warren Miller, “If you don’t go now, you’ll be another year older when you do.”

Get to Know Four Designers Behind One-of-a-Kind Pieces at Boulder’s Starfish Jewelry

Tucked within Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, Starfish Jewelry (StarfishBoulder.com) is a sparkling gem itself. The boutique, a fixture on the local jewelry scene for 10 years, stocks an edited mix of fine, demi-fine and fashion pieces for a range of shoppers — from college students and younger people on a budget to out-of-towners and those looking for something rare and luxurious.

“Our overall aesthetic is unique art pieces,” says Elizabeth Yodice, owner of Starfish for the past two years. “People come in and say, ‘I love what you have. There’s a cohesiveness.’ When I buy a new line of jewelry, it’s based on instinct and what I find compelling.”

Starfish carries about 25 designers at a time, with half based in Colorado. A common thread connects one artist to the next: an authentic, personal connection to their work that shines through in every piece. Here, meet four designers who are sharing their passion for creating something beautiful with the Boulder community and beyond.

Born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Paula Romero was creatively influenced by many of her family members — architects, a painter, sculptor and surgeon — and the landscape that enveloped her. “Guayaquil is a port city filled with warm and kind people, delicious food, colors, nearby beaches that stretch for miles and amazing cultural art made by the indigeneous people,” she says. A move to the United States nearly 20 years ago eventually took her to Boulder, where she dreamed of a more creative role while working in the service industry. Using beads and pieces from necklaces she already had, Paula began crafting bracelets. This led to the creation of Zeta Leonis , her line of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings made from sterling silver, 14K-18K solid recycled gold, pearls and colorful gems from around the globe.

“My goal is to create inclusive, timeless pieces that are for any person, from the dad picking up kids from school to the grandmother looking to gift a newlywed on their special day,” Paula says. “The materials from each piece have a history of their own travels, and I hope to convey that in my work.”

Elisa Browsh

Crafting jewelry has been part of Elisa Browsh’s life since high school. “I have always loved making jewelry because you can wear it!” she says. After working in Boulder jewelry store Diamond Dove and completing a goldsmithing apprenticeship while attending CU Boulder, Elisa was invited to a pearl auction in Tahiti. She imported pearls for over a decade for her company Elyria Pearls, which later evolved into Elyria Jewels — a collection of pieces that balance fine and raw elements, often with pearls, moonstones and diamonds.

Elisa finds inspiration in those closest to her (“Over the holidays, my husband and I went to Vienna, drank a lot of coffee and had a great time talking about art, architecture and the Habsburg crown jewels”) and great artists of the past.

“Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s lead designer in the early 20th century, was a visionary jeweler,” she adds. Currently, Elisa is expanding her bridal offering while diving deeper into her philanthropic endeavors.

Boulder native Davis Hatcher made his first piece of jewelry more than 10 years ago at his brother’s request for a Christmas present, an unexpected experience that perfectly combined Davis’ creative and engineering talents. “Since I first got my hands on some Legos as a kid, I have never stopped making things — electric guitars, bike parts, on and on,” he says.

With his eponymous artisan jewelry line, Davis works with gold, silver, niobium (“I get it from a secret supplier,” he quips), diamonds, emeralds and opals to create sculptural rings, pendants, earrings and helix cuffs. He uses techniques that he invented and refined in order to scrap fewer precious metals. “I have a distaste for polished, empty-feeling brand images and materialism,” he says. “I care a lot about a shared sense of humanness and want to help others feel worthy through my art.”

Kathleen Doyle-Murphy

“I’m obsessed with stones,” says Kathleen Doyle-Murphy. “Ask my husband. There is a room filled with them.” Kathleen designs bracelets, earrings and necklaces with emeralds, lapis, labradorite, opals, rubies, amethysts and more for her line,  James and Jezebelle Jewelry. A Boulder resident for 25 years, Kathleen’s talents were spotted 16 years ago when she showed necklaces she made to a friend in a local restaurant. A boutique owner overheard her and ordered several pieces on the spot. Kathleen specializes in hand knotting and wire working processes that can take several hours. “Some necklaces with micro stones take four to five hours of knotting,” she says. “I am proud of the quality and the fact that they’re made by a real person.”

Kathleen recently picked up metalsmithing, a skill she had to let go when she couldn’t give it her full attention. She’s spending a few days a week in a metal studio, exploring different techniques to spark her creativity. “Whether it’s making a beautiful and delicious plate of food, making a gorgeous piece of clothing or making an amazing photo, keeping your imagination and creativity alive is what it’s all about.”

Intentional, comfortable, and transportive – the dining experience at Corrida is incomparable. Self described as a Spanish-inspired steakhouse located in Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, sitting in the restaurant itself feels as though you’ve left Boulder entirely and have been whisked away to a quiet open-aired rooftop in the northern countryside of Spain—but the views of the Flatirons and modern interiors gently bring you back to the foothills.

Immediately greeted with warm lighting, light hues, and white linens, the unobstructed view of the Flatirons is striking and the ambiance is set. Even when sitting inside, you feel as though you’re sitting outside. The Spanish influences are seen and felt at this sophisticated steak and tapas restaurant, as owner Bryan Dayton pulled from his travels to the Basque Country of Northern Spain for inspiration. Their menu, just recently updated for the season as we move into warmer summer days, draws from Spanish traditions, both old and new, and aims to celebrate the offerings from land, sea and earth.

The emphasis on steak remains for Bryan and Executive Chef Samuel McCandless. Their focus on regenerative beef ranching was a topic revisited throughout our meal, as our waiter Lucien explained to us where their beef is sourced from in the U.S. The staff at Corrida share the same reverence for the Toro as

they do in Spain and aim to pay homage to our western cattle culture that’s deeply rooted in Spanish history.

As their food rotates seasonally, so do their drinks. Known for their extensive Spanish wine list tailored to perfection to pair with menu items, Corrida’s beverage program offers a variety of creative, hand-crafted cocktails. We watched as the roaming gin & tonic cart made its way throughout the restaurant, creating seasonal and unique spins on the drink as one of their signature offerings crafted tableside. Another

ambiance and service level, yet somehow added comfort. The sprawling patio takes up two-thirds of the restaurant and is filled with couches and fire pits to create the perfect elevated happy hour, or as they call it, Hora de Salon. Everything about it, from the comfort to the views to the tapas, makes the rooftop the ultimate summer vibe.

Considered finer-dining across the board, Corrida is unique in that you have the option to dictate which way your experience will go (with their help, of course). Whether you

signature cocktail, and Lucien’s current favorite, is the Los Isleños - a Spanish take on the Old Fashioned with A5 fatwashed Jura 10 year old whisky. Safe to say it had our taste buds tingling. The insignia of the restaurant imprinted on the large ice cube furthers the common thread of intentionality weaved throughout everything in the steakhouse.

While the space brings an air of elegance to the Boulder dining scene, it’s important to note that Corrida’s rooftop patio is the perfect setting to, well, just hang out. Walking out from the indoor dining area and onto the patio feels like you have entered another restaurant entirely, with the same

Local Entrepreneurs Dive Into Camper Renovation

Filipe and Joana Oliveira are an outdoorsy, music-loving couple who are always game for packing up and heading out camping. The one thing they began to miss while enjoying time in the woods with their young son, however, was their extensive record collection.

“We wished we could have our turntable there camping with us,” Joana Oliveira says. “We want to put a record on.”

To that end, the couple behind midcentury music console company PoBo Lifestyle purchased a 1971 Airstream—the 27-foot Overlander Double—in September of last year. They named it Billie, after American jazz great Billie Holiday, and began renovating. Despite a monthslong search that could have involved traveling out of state to procure the trailer, the Airstream the Oliverias picked was already in Colorado—and was manufactured the very same month and year Filipe was born. The couple, who relocated

to Boulder from Portugal in 2019 with their now 6-year-old son, say it was kismet.

Given that they run a company that revives decades-old turntables—and were self-taught home renovators back in Portugal— the two felt confident they could do most of the work on the Airstream themselves.

“We have good ideas and then need to find a path to get to them,” Joana says, adding that there are many online forums where fellow Airstream renovators swap ideas and tackle common hiccups. Other than things like Billie’s solar panels and upholstery, Filipe and Joana tackled the gut job themselves. The work would necessitate a large, covered space plus electrical—requirements that were too difficult to find in the Boulder area—so most of the work took place in a barn in Reunion, near Denver International Airport. CONTINUED >

87 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER JUNE 2023

From the flooring and fabrics to the lighting and color scheme, Joana and Filipe wanted Billie’s decor to match the time period from which it came, just as they do with their consoles.

“The already-renovated Airstreams we were seeing were looking very…Ikea,” Joana quips. “When we take 50-, 70-year old consoles and update them, our thing is, ‘Don’t mess with what doesn’t need to be updated.’”

Some aspects of the six-month revamp, however, were just a tad more work than they bargained for, especially polishing the 4,480-pound Airstream’s iconic, silvery exterior. That aspect alone took two entire weeks, Joana says: “It’s a three-step process with a super heavy machine and a compound. There’s a reason companies charge over $5,000 to do this.”

Billie will, of course, feature a console that Felipe and Joana restored themselves. Customized record storage will hold approximately 50 albums on vinyl, from Radiohead and Jose Gonzales to Bon Iver and Lake Street Dive. Joana says she and Filipe are constantly discovering new music from all eras. Favorite albums within the last year include “Unify” by Lettuce and “Cold as Weiss” by Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio (who are PoBo clients).

Envious yet? No need. Despite all their sweat equity, the Oliveiras don’t wish to keep Billie all to themselves. They hope it will serve many purposes, including renting it out.

Describing the Airstream as “a musical time capsule on wheels,” Joana says brands are already showing interest in hiring Billie for events.

“It’s not super clear where this will go, but there are multiple opportunities,” she says. “Maybe weddings or festivals. Or likeminded individuals who just want to immerse themselves in nature and records.”

CAMPING IN COMFORT

No matter if it’s van life or tent life, a little luxury while camping never hurt anyone—an ethos the Oliveiras say enriches their time in nature.

“To us, what matters the most is the experience itself and having some luxuries to mimic the amazing evenings we have at home— only away,” Joanna Oliveira says. “For instance, we love to have a cocktail in a real glass by the fire, or a wine bottle (not a box), cook our food from scratch and have really comfortable chairs.”

The family calls out the upper campsite at Steamboat (“great views to the lake”); Estes Park at the end of season; and Tie Siding in Wyoming as some of their favorite spots.

As the quickly approaching summer days get longer and the Western Slope begins to thaw out, all of Colorado begins to wake up. You can feel the excitement as the summer mountains begin to call.

Like any good Coloradoan we know that you have your sites set on Telluride Bluegrass, but after a week of rolling in the dirt and sleeping on the ground, a little luxury is in store. We love the Bluegrass camp life as much as you do, as we mourn another year of Telluride Bluegrass gone by, why don’t we celebrate this year’s momentous festival with another round (or three) of good food, hot springs, more music and endless amazing Colorado stories, along the trail back home. Here are some of our favorite stops along the way..

THE SURF HOTEL, BUENA VISTA

Spend a night or two at Surf Hotel, Buena Vista

Overlooking the rapids of the Buena Vista Whitewater Park, the Surf Hotel offers a boutique travel experience where details are carefully crafted and spaces tell a timeless story. Guests enjoy a sense of luxury without pretension, inspired by both the understated elegance of European hotels and the spectacular natural beauty of our home in the Rocky Mountains. Whether for solo travelers, families, corporate groups or wedding parties, the contemporary approach to hospitality will suit any kind of travel.

While you’re there, enjoy Music on the Lawn

If you time your travels right, and you can’t quite get enough of the live music,

the highlight of the trip is to enjoy big act names in a small setting at the Surf Hotels Lawn. Catch artists like Shakey Graves and LeftOver Salmon playing to the background of the river surfers riding the waves of the Arkansas.

Take a day to hang in Salida, Colorado

While you’re in the area, Salida is a can’t miss. Take some extra time to cruise to this river town and enjoy the millions of parks, water and recreation areas. The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area  allows visitors to partake in multiple adventure activities at once, such as kayaking and whitewater rafting, hiking, camping, wildlife watching, and mountain biking. Riverside Park is just downtown and great alternative if your looking for a casual nature cruise.

THE WESTERN, OURAY COLORADO

The Western Hotel is the crown jewel of Southwestern Colorado located fifteen minutes south of Ridgeway in Ouray, Colorado. Trust us when we tell you that the Western Hotel is an experience that one cannot pass up. The Western was built in 1891 and was used to lodge the silver miners at the turn of the century. The hotel is built on layers and layers of history–which are still exhibited on the beautiful walls of the dining room and main entryway. As you look into the layers of plaster, and intricately patterned wallpaper,  not to mention the original 1891 front desk, your eyes are brought to the various hunting trophies, pot belly wood burning stove, original to the building, and spectacular views of the San Juan Mountain range peering over the little town.

While the historical artifacts are stunning, what makes the Western outstanding is the attention to detail and dedication to preserving the historical integrity of a cherished Western story. Developed by Kyle  Zeppelin of Zeppelin Development, of Zeppelin Station, The Source, and A Frame Club, The Western possesses the signature mark of all of Zeppelin’s developments; impossibly complicated paired with a determined sense of integrity, a duty to tell the stories of Colorado history while shepherding spaces into the hands of new multiple of generation of users that will be left from years to come.

The Jezebel

We would be a miss if we wrote this piece and not mentioned one of the most exquisite restaurants in all of the Western slope if not all of Colorado (we know, hot take.) Chef Nic Weber, of A-Frame fame brings a menu that not only offers one of the most complex meals we’ve had in years, but turns his food into a dialogue between the past and the future of the Southwest. Dishes are inspired not only from local plants, such as Anasazi beans, Red Mole as a nod to the red mountains of Colorado, and cooked over local Colorado Scrub Oak from Kokopelli Farms, but work to form a new relationship that the rural West is building with a vibrant economy and furthering stories created by the locals of today. Take, for example, the Three Sisters. From native agricultural farming practices is the wisdom that corn is planted, squash will provide the necessary soil nutrients and the beans will climb up the tall stalks of the corn. A dish changing with the seasons, incorporating this ancient wisdom will always be at the top of Nic Weber's menus; reflecting on the past, engaging with the local land, and creating beloved dishes to feed future stories.

The

Face on the Bar Room Floor

The Western Hotel and Saloon are full of historical Easter eggs. While you can tour the lobby photos and play eye spy for surviving bars or taxidermy, the real gold mine is The Face on the Bar Room Floor. The face of a woman, some call her Juanita, others endearingly named her Jezebel, was  painted near 100 years ago. We can’t tell you much about her other than the whispering of the legends from other bar goers. Some say she left a scorned lover and in his passionate effort to find her, he painted her face in every bar room floor from here to the Gulf of Mexico.  Today only two of these paintings survive, and the Western’s very own has gone on to inspire the name of the restaurant, Jezebel.

DUNTON HOT SPRINGS, DUNTON COLORADO

If luxury calls you, there is no answer more honest than the Dunton Hot Springs. The rural resort adds an extra hour to your trip from Telluride, but for the luxury girlies out there, it is a must-see. And we mean—you can. not. miss. these springs.  You’ll find yourself at a small and exclusive resort nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies. This perfectly restored ghost town thrives on contradictions; hand-hewn log cabins exquisitely furnished, a life-worn saloon serving food of startling quality, lung torturing trails followed by pampering massages, sensuous hot springs.

Dunton is a collection of extraordinary, secluded, unique resorts and homes situated in the most striking of locations.  Providing authentic, immersive experiences and value in all of the things money can’t buy rather than “just a nice place to stay;” Dunton is a celebration of exceptional food & wine, active engagement with stunning natural surroundings, and industry leading sustainable operations to protect those natural surroundings in a compelling way.

CLOTHING OPTIONAL: ORVIS HOT SPRINGS

Orvis Hot Springs is a clothing-optional natural hot springs resort that does not heat or treat the water in any way. Orvis offers seven soaking areas that range in temperature from 98-112 degrees. Four of the soaking areas are outside where you can enjoy the gorgeous Colorado sun and the starfilled evening sky.

FAMILY FRIENDLY: MOUNT PRINCETON HOT SPRINGS

The Mount Princeton Hot Springs outside of Buena Vista is another hot spring resort that offers pools fed by a natural hot spring, which heats the water to temperatures ranging from 70 degrees to 120 degrees. The pools here are large with plenty of space to bring the whole family or large groups. Situated on either side of the Arkansas River, these springs are especially exciting given the unique thermal springs water pooling inside the river.

OURAY HOT SPRINGS

Ouray Hot Springs is another great spot to bring the whole family. Located in downtown Ouray, the facility houses five pools, three of which are geothermally heated. The water contains a vast number of minerals, including, iron, manganese, zinc, fluoride, and potassium, among others. During your stay you will notice all of the pools are odorless. This is because the water does not contain any sulfur. Temperatures range from 75 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

The facility is larger than your average small pool and contains an adults-only option for those wishing to relax, 8 lap lanes, two water slides for people of all ages to enjoy, a climbing wall, and an inflatable obstacle course.

PENNY HOT SPRINGS

The Penny Hot Springs might be some of the most “organic” hot springs. They are naturally fed with hot mineral water and are free to use. It’s located on the Crystal River just past Carbondale, about forty-five minutes from Aspen. The springs are surrounded by rugged snow capped peaks and breathtaking canyons and makes for a rejuvenating experience after a long day enjoying the area’s numerous outdoor activities. The Penny Hot Springs are clothing required, but as they are free and right of the side of the road, you can’t get any better than that.

MY FAVORITE SIGHTS, EATS, SHOPS AND TIPS IN THE CITY OF LOVE

JOURNAL
TRAVEL

Back in January in the midst of a very snowy winter in Boulder, I found myself bitten by the travel bug and spontaneously booked a trip to Paris alongside one of my best friends. Fresh out of the hair salon with a bob, I hopped on a flight out of DIA only stopping once in Reykjavik via Icelandair. (They even give you a complimentary checked bag!) We checked into our Airbnb in the 3rd arrondissement (they’re scattered throughout the city at differing price points) and got right to exploring.

WHAT WE ATE AND DRANK:

Boulangerie:

• Mamiche (their chocolate babka and ham and cheese toastie are a must)

• Tapisserie (stop here for a pomme galette or strawberry sumac tart prior to your Eiffel Tower sojourn only minutes away)

• Le Pain Retrouvé

• The French Bastards

• Du Pain et des Idées

• Ten Belles

• Dreamin Man (under-the-radar coffee shop with one of the best matchas IMO)

Déjeuner:

• Pontochoux (a hole in the wall for flavorful Japanese curry that was supposed to change my life, it did!)

• Chez Alain Miam Miam (dare I say…the best sandwich I’ve ever had? I went back three times.)

• Song Heng (go post-Pompidou for a cozy bowl of pho.)

• Le Mary Celeste (locally-driven lunch spot serving oysters to interrupt a day of shopping in the 3rd arr.)

• Les enfants du marché (open air market-style eatery located in the Marais)

Dîner:

• Des Terres (where a four-hour meal is encouraged)

• Early June

• Clamato (order the sardine nduja toast paired with a glass of orange wine)

• Bouche Paris (suited for a romantic candlelit meal)

• Les Bon Georges (classic French bistro)

Vin:

• Fréquences (cool cocktail joint with a vast vinyl collection to match)

• Folderol (natural wine and homemade ice creams made this one of my favorites)

• Septime La Cave (tiny bottle shop/bar with delicious small plates)

WHERE WE SHOPPED:

• Merci (lifestyle shop curated to perfection)

• Le Bon Marché

• OFR Bookshop (a literary gem that’s been around since 1996 with a collection of books, zines, records, & branded gear)

• Thanx God I’m a V.I.P (three storefronts of vintage fashion)

• Centre Commercial

• Buly 1803

• Benneton Graveur (old-school stationery retailer selling customizable prints and signet rings)

• Alex D. Reynis (jewelry and ceramics)

• Librarie Elbé (vintage posters)

• French pharmacies (stock up on skincare you won’t be able to find back in the States)

WHAT WE SAW:

• Musée L’Orangerie

• Musée Picasso

• Musée D’Orsay/Rodin

• Sainte-Chapelle (visit on a sunny day to see the most spectacular stained glass windows)

• Centre Pompidou

• Montmartre (there is an old-school photo booth steps away from Sacré-Cœur called Foto Automat)

• Parc des Buttes Chaumont (gather fare for a relaxing picnic day from one of the supermarkets around the area)

• Canal Saint-Martin (neighborhood parallel to the river offering a plethora of shops and restaurants)

RO’S IN-THE-KNOW TIPS:

• Buy an adapter for the electrical sockets abroad beforehand.

• Pack an extra duffel bag for trip purchases.

• Bring a small water bottle to the airport that you can refill during travel.

• As a chronic over-packer, I found it helpful to plan my outfits for each day on the notes app on my phone. Make sure to bring a light jacket and mini umbrella.

• Purchase a pack of 10-20+ metro tickets once you get into town (Google Maps is your friend for planning day trips.)

• Book museum tickets/tours in advance. Most museums offer night showings for a reduced rate with fewer crowds.

• Asking the industry workers how their day is going goes a long way. You just might get a free glass of wine or hidden gem recommendation out of it.

• Collect matchbooks and business/restaurant cards.

• Download the Get Your Guide app to sign up for city tours, Seine boat rides, croissant-making classes, etc.  Bon voyage!

DIVE INTO THE MAZDA CX-90 WITH SILL-TERHAR MOTORS

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the brand’s roomiest model yet. The sculpted SUV comes with three rows of seats, which means you can take up to eight passengers with you on your rides around town or in the country. Plus, with almost 16 cubic feet of cargo space—or around 75 with the second and third rows of seats folded down— you can bring just about anything with you on your trips.  Kakenui stitching, a unique Japanese stitch, holds the leather-trimmed seats together while giving them dimension. A panoramic moonroof lets in an abundance of natural light and allows everyone in the car to take in the view with the drive. A personalization system allows the primary driver to adjust the driver’s seat, outer mirrors and steering wheel with facial recognition, just by climbing in the car.

Driver's Notebook

When it comes to the CX-90’s inner workings, you have the choice between two types of 3.3-liter inline six turbo engines. The standard one offers 280 horsepower. The other option, Mazda’s most powerful engine to date, presents 340 horsepower. Or, opt for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle version of the car.

Mazda designed the CX-90’s all-wheel drive to adapt to differing terrain, from smooth city streets to bumpy backroads. The SUV also boasts up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, covering just about anything you might need to drag behind your car.

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 starts at $43,445. Test drive one today at Sill-TerHar Motors, 150 Alter Street in Broomfield.
