Happy May!
All things seem possible in May. The world’s favorite season is spring; with the re-emergence of bright colors and the Colorado sunshine feeling stronger day by day, I can’t help but feel inspired and excited. I think spring gives us all the opportunity to take a step back and reconnect with ourselves, and allows us to move into the warmer months feeling refreshed. “May, more than any other month of the year, wants us to feel most alive.” — Fennel Hudson, A Meaningful Life . I’d say Fennel is onto something with that, and it's best we take his word for it.
With all the warmth and joy that the month brings us physically, we feel it’s also important to highlight all the fabulous and strong and irreplaceable women in our lives that make us feel the way spring does, but internally. Of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… but it’s not just the biological mothers we celebrate, rather the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring their love into our lives—making themselves unforgettable.
Let’s join together to celebrate all of the special women in our community that make it what it is. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers—both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way. And they’re so easy to adore.
May the warm things ahead fill you with joy!

Newlands beauty transformed from weathered beige to perfect blue
The transformation was fantastic…I cannot say enough good things about my experience with this company!
“The Colorado sun had really taken its toll on the exterior of our home. We decided to refresh the color and called Maurer. They helped me pick out the most beautiful shade of blue. The transformation was incredible! Tami had the idea to strip the porch down to its original wood and stain it a rich brown. I could not be happier with the results. It makes the entry to our home so inviting. Maurer Painting and her team have been a pleasure to work with.”

HOW THE IVY LEAGUE ENDOWMENT MODEL CAN WORK FOR YOU
FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES 50
New platforms can provide a wider range of investors with access to alternative investments without exposing them to higher risks.
The markets have experienced considerable volatility since the beginning of 2022, with most asset classes, including stocks and bonds, struggling to withstand the turbulence. This has prompted investors to closely monitor their portfolios.
Clients holding only traditional asset allocations may have reason to doubt their advisors' advice to "stay the course." Although patient investors' portfolios generally perform well over time, they should not have to endure significant losses along the way.
To pursue higher performance amidst broader volatility, while also shielding oneself from the risks associated with a traditional 60/40 portfolio (60% stock, 40% bond), investors can look to the Ivy League Endowment model for inspiration. Advancements in technology and distribution innovations are making it more achievable than ever before.
The Problem with the 60/40 Portfolio
Due to the current macroeconomic conditions, the traditional 60/40 portfolio no longer satisfies the usual
requirements of investors. To demonstrate, we provide a review of the last couple of years indicating why this is the case:
• Starting March 23, 2020 (market bottom during COVID-related shutdowns) to the end of 2021 – the S&P 500 shot up by more than 110%. Some1 have dubbed this period the 'everything' rally, with nearly all asset classes increasing in value. Unsurprisingly, many investors did well during this time. Still, the Ivy League Endowments did much better over a similar cycle. During the 2020-2021 fiscal year ending June 30, Ivy League Endowments produced returns 12 percentage points to 32 percentage points higher than the average 60/40 portfolio.
• Then, looking at the 2021-2022 Ivy League fiscal year, the average 60/40 portfolio lost approximately 12% through June 30. By contrast, performance of the Ivy League Endowments was more resilient over this time period. According to preliminary data from varying Endowment Reports, Ivy League universities produced returns ranging from a gain of 0.8% to a loss of 7.6%.
“ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION INNOVATIONS ARE MAKING IT MORE ACHIEVABLE THAN EVER BEFORE.”

TIPS FROM IMPACT WEALTH
FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES 52
How the Endowment Model Works
The Ivy League Endowment Model allocates 40% to 80% of a portfolio's holdings to alternative investments like private equity, venture capital and hedge funds. These investments are often complex and illiquid, requiring institutional managers with the necessary skills and experience to handle the associated risks.
Sophisticated investors, such as elite universities, have an advantage in this regard. They have access to multiple fund managers, each with ultra-high investment minimums that the average investor cannot meet. Additionally, endowments benefit from in-house investment committees and other professionals who handle critical administrative tasks like paperwork and liquidity management.
Replicating the Model
When replicating such models, it is important to adopt similar investment strategies using specialized tools and platforms that can accommodate smaller dollar amounts. However, before selecting a platform to replicate the Endowment model, clients should consider a few things:
• Platforms should allow clients to create diversified, multi-vintage, multi-strategy portfolios with as little as $250,000 across several funds without per-fund minimums.
• Beware of platforms that accept payments from fund managers for distribution. Managers should be selected based on their merit and ability to navigate multiple market cycles, not on kickbacks or distribution fees.
• Access to dozens of thoroughly reviewed funds representing a wide variety of strategies and ongoing due diligence not only of existing funds but also others for potential inclusion.
• In-house technology that provides client-facing education.
• Look for platforms with independent safeguards in place as their custodian, administrator and auditor.
Expanding Investment Horizons
The current market volatility underscores the importance of considering alternative investments. Instead of questioning why your 60/40 portfolio is underperforming, you may want to follow in the footsteps of the world's most prosperous endowments and broaden your investment horizons by incorporating alternative investments.

Designed in Boulder, the World’s First Fully Electric Camper Elevates the Van Life Experience
ARTICLE BY LINDEN BUTRYM PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CAMPWORKS
As the nomadic lifestyle shifts from a quirky social media trend to a very popular, sustainable way of living, brilliant minds like Thomas Hoffmann, Kristian Rene and Zach Finnimore are entering the chat. The trio behind Boulder-based Campworks created the Nomadic System 1, the first-generation electric camper designed with functionality, reliability, longevity and pure innovation in mind. Born from a desire to better connect with and live in nature, the NS-1 makes going off the grid, or living off the grid, easier and more efficient than ever.
“We thought, What if you could really escape for a weekend, a week, a month?” Kristian says. “What if you had the resources to go anywhere and always be connected to the things that make your life possible?”
The NS-1 camper is 95% self-sufficient, a capability that comes from its Fathom electrical system—a complete lithium-ion power management system designed in partnership with Navico Group, a division of the renowned Brunswick Corporation. With 12,000 watt-hours of battery capacity, it’s also able to charge power tools, an electric vehicle and even a washing machine. At all times, the NS-1 can maintain up to an 80-degree difference between exterior and interior temperatures. Exploring the Arctic Circle at -40 degrees? Inside the camper, it will remain a balmy 40 degrees.
At 8’x10’, the NS-1 might appear small, but it packs a punch when it comes to design features. A queen-size
bed folds up to convert the space into a workstation and kitchen with custom hardwood cabinetry, storage, 96 inches of countertop and a dual-burner cooktop; a complete HVAC system heats and cools the camper; and each unit features a door with an automated lock that has several thousand pounds of force maintaining the integrity of its closure.
“We designed our own doors because it turns out, there’s only like one type of door on the market for campers,” Kristian says. “And guess what? Those all have the same key. Security is important because you have to think about bears when you’re camping, or if you’re a woman traveling with children.”
Atop the NS-1 is a rack that supports a tent or gear like skis and kayaks. The rear bumper can swing out to hold a grill, a retractable awning provides shade and LED lighting illuminates when you need it. Currently in development is an ADA-compliant chair that swings in and out of the camper. The NS-1 is so durable, you can take it through snow-packed hills, over rocky boulders and across any other type of terrain.
Sustainable luxury is a huge part of the camper’s appeal, with its small footprint, electric power and single body made with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) materials. Early customers include a man with a career in oil and gas, who wants to spend time in nature with his grandchildren in a more constructive way and an environmental attorney looking to support a cause that he relates to.

“We really built a product that looks far down the line,” Kristian says. “One of our goals is to do our part in saving the world. That doesn’t happen with creating a product that’s going to end up in a landfill. The only way we're going to learn to reduce is if we don't feel like we're having to make a sacrifice, so our components, application and the options with this unit are the best.”
At $75,000 per camper, the cost does not come cheap; however, it’s indicative of the thoughtful details that went into creating something designed for unparalleled resilience and endurance. A steady stream of orders for the NS-1 have poured in since Campworks unveiled a prototype in

“When we first started, we wanted to test our electric system and find out how much power we’re packing,” she says. “We actually made a Thanksgiving dinner in the middle of nowhere for 10 people. We cooked a 25-pound turkey and all of the accouterments. Those are the kinds of memories that are worth making, but it only works if things function the way you expect them to and the way you need them to.”

A TRANSFORMATIVE HOME REMODEL BY BOULDER’S RODWIN ARCHITECTURE
ARTICLE BY LISA VAN HORNE PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANE CRONIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Brilliant Balance
As Jon and Amy Cooper were looking to move on from the urban Denver neighborhood where they’d been living, their four young children were at the top of their minds.
“We joked that we weren’t sure if we were looking to move to the suburbs or to the 1980s,” says Amy. “We wanted to find an environment where our kids could ride bikes, play in the cul de sac and have the kind of freedom that we grew up with.”
The Coopers found a home in just such an area that embodied the atmosphere they’d been seeking. However, the 2005 structure was not optimized to facilitate the family’s everyday lives and many passions. Add in Jon and Amy’s desire to have a home base for their entrepreneurial ventures and a space to host large family events and fundraisers and it was clear that a remodel was needed. The Coopers engaged with Boulder’s Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Construction to renovate the home with the theme of balance as its foundation.
“We wanted to create a house that was extremely livable, while also being an expression of ourselves. Striking the balance between beautiful form and ease of functionality was one of our core tenants,” says Amy. “We also wanted to embrace Colorado style while bringing a much more contemporary feel to the home.”

The Coopers began a wonderful working relationship with the Rodwin and Skycastle teams as they collaborated to create a day-to-day playground for their family that could also serve as a stunning venue for guests—all with luxury and livability working harmoniously.
“The Coopers really trusted our team, and our design/build process was ideally suited for this project,” says Scott Rodwin, AIA, LEED AP and founder of Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Construction. “We did a total gut remodel plus a complete overhaul of the site to customize the home to fully support the functions of their busy household.”
The Rodwin team began at the home’s core, removing the interior walls to bring all of the main floor social spaces together. This forms a cohesive heart of the abode that also serves as a highly versatile, multifunctional space. The expanded kitchen island accommodates ample cooking area and seating for the family, while the dining area was reconfigured to facilitate both everyday meals and dinner parties. Windows were added to allow natural light to spill in and to connect the indoor and outdoor living spaces. Meanwhile, the great room features a standout focal point with a custom wall to display the family’s art collection.
“While we love the wow factor, we also love ease,” says Amy. “We find our home beautiful, but it’s also very comfortable and livable. There’s nothing about this house that feels like a museum— there is nothing breakable and no sharp edges.”
The fully transformed basement is another example of this blend of everyday fun and entertaining prowess. It includes a movie theater, arcade, pool hall

and upscale bar—just some of the dual play and entertainment spaces that define so much of the property, which project manager Cecelia Kane calls a cornucopia of entertainment options.
The award-winning outdoor and landscaped areas by EDI also perfectly blend play, grandeur and relaxation. The custom play structure and game lawn allow for endless fun, and they are complemented by a pool, hot tub, firepit, gazebos and new patios. The centerpiece is a giant Rocky Mountain-inspired koi pond and waterfall, which lends gorgeous serenity to the scene. This oasis-like quality is echoed within the home in the primary bathroom, a uniquely private space with handmade Ann Sacks tiles and a custom book-matched walnut floating vanity. Similarly stunning design details are prevalent throughout the rest of the home as well, with interior finishes and furnishings by Kate Moore of Kimball Modern Design + Interiors.
From the inviting wine cellar—an area that Jon feels is the showpiece of the house—to the prolific organic gardens and full gym, each of the home’s elements is representative of the family’s passions and values. A large part of the renovation was likewise dramatically improving the home’s sustainability with a rebuilt HVAC system with electric air source heat pumps, solar panels and car chargers.
Since its completion, this project has been selected for a host of state and national awards and recognitions. In all, it is a home that the Coopers can relish in no matter what the day may bring, whether it’s a lively family night, a vibrant event or a time for peace and relaxation.

LNon-profit Colorado dog rescue Brighter Days Dog Rescue (BDDR) credits our furry friends for being the unsung modern-day heroes. Brighter Days’ mission is to continue saving the lives of dogs that are harder to save; the ones that may be overlooked, or forgotten about, due to sickness, injuries, old age, etc. Many in their care have been rescued from high-kill shelters and have often been through very traumatic experiences. They receive emails about dogs in urgent situations from volunteers all over the U.S., and in turn, do everything in
their power to save these dogs and unite them with the families they were meant to be with.
If it wasn’t obvious: BDDR places the utmost importance on helping adopters and canines find their perfect match. And they never give up on a dog in their care.
Founder Rebecca (Becca) Orin started BDDR in 2017 out of a desire to help dogs in need. “I wanted to help dogs who were seniors and those with more severe medical cases than more rescues were able to take on,” says Becca. They currently

rehab over 50 special-needs dogs a year and have 15 dogs in their hospice program.
In this program, Brighter Days takes in about 10-15 dogs annually that are at the end stages of their lives but have been given the chance to spend the rest of their days being showered with love and medical care rather than in an overcrowded shelter. They continue to take on as many hospice dogs as they have funds and fosters for.
“The dogs may not be healthy enough for adoption, affected with things such as heart failure, blindness and deafness, autoimmune disease, kidney disease, etc.,” says Becca. “But just because
they have health issues doesn't mean they can’t live anywhere from one month to two years.” Their hospice program, in many ways, is the heart of their mission. They make sure these dogs are as comfortable as possible in a loving foster home where all of their medical needs are met until they cross the rainbow bridge.
Being established in Boulder County has been great for Brighter Days and has proven to be full of assistance and encouragement. “We have found so much support through our community, including fosters, donors and even small businesses that have supported us along the way,” says Becca. “PC’s Pantry in Boulder and Pig and

This also ensures that they are not contributing to the animal overpopulation crisis in the world, a phenomenon where the number of any given species increases to an alarming extent and the ecosystem fails to support their survival. Pearl have always been a huge support for us and we are incredibly grateful for them.”
Their adoption process is thoroughly vetted by the BDDR team, and Becca herself, to ensure that the dogs and the family are compatible and the home environment is healthy for the dog. They review applications on a case-by-case basis and select the home they think would be the best fit for everyone involved. In doing so, the companions in Brighter Days’ care get the second chance they so deserve in the best possible forever home.
With the ultimate goal being to save all of the dogs that need it most, BDDR also recognizes its responsibility as a rescue
important because it means that we are not contributing to this issue.
"The benefits of adoption are endless, but the main benefit is giving a life to an animal that was brought into the world by humans and has suffered at the hands of them,” says Becca. “Rescue dogs have endless love to give and their loyalty is unmatched.”

Adriann’s work also frequently incorporates other natural elements, like horsehair or leather, and she says she aspires to incorporate metal and wood into her sculptural work in the future.
“I’m always looking to expand my skills in any medium and have dabbled in wood, metal smithing, fiber and charcoal,” she explains. “I never want to restrict myself to one medium or be constrained by materials, which is why I love mixed media and combining materials together in an interesting way.”

Adriann Leigh originally went back to school with the intention to study interior design. Then, she found ceramic arts. “Ceramics acted as a physical outlet away from computer design where I could work with my hands,” she says. “I ended up enjoying this more than interior design and shifted my focus to ceramic arts and sculpture.”
Working with her hands has become a key theme in her work, which primarily utilizes the hand-building method: “I want my work to have the appearance of something made by human hands with small variations that show the mark of the artist,” she explains. “… Hand building makes for a slower production process, giving me time to get intimately

Natalie Legg
Artist Natalie Legg knows a thing or two (thousand) about mugs. “I used to thrift obsessively back when I lived in Chicago, and I would always buy vintage mugs or just odd unique mugs,” she recounts. “So I guess you could say I have quite a collection. Not sure exactly what my fascination is with them but even after creating probably over 2,000 of them, I could still come up with a different version.”
A quick glance at Natalie’s line, Void Form Ceramics, proves it. Inspired by everything from “nature to mid-century design to plain, child-like exploration,” Natalie’s work showcases a cleanlined, minimalist yet natural aesthetic.
“I want the clay body itself to be seen on all my work, so you are reminded that it did come from the earth,” explains Natalie. “And the glazes I typically use are all neutral or earth toned so they can blend into any environment and are reminiscent of a landscape.”

Made in her home studio, her work—largely taking the form of funky but highly functional mugs—go on to be a part of everyday life for customers.
“That is my intention for making mugs,” she explains. “I want it to be your go-to mug everyday. I want it to be a part of someone's daily routine. Something they want to have out on their desk, coffee table or counter almost as a statement piece or a piece of art, not to be hidden away in a cabinet.”

Kim found ceramics while pursuing a degree in graphic design, and has honed her skills for nearly two decades in studios everywhere from Denver to Southern California to Japan. Now, inspiration can come from anywhere: “It could be as simple as laying in bed staring at my wall, collecting rocks, working in the studio or looking at shadows.” Her work also includes other forms, like mugs, bowls, teapots… “pretty much anything functional for your home,” she says. “I just love making anything that people can use in their daily lives.
“I see homes as personal art galleries,” she continues, “so I’m honored and super grateful when someone chooses to bring my work into their space.”

Take a glance at Kim’s Etsy shop (KimHauCeramics), and you’ll see one distinct design steals the show—a soap dish that’s both attractive and innovative, designed to drain right back into the sink.
“Lately the soap/sponge dish has been my bread-and-butter,” Kim explains. “It blew up a while back when someone from GQ ordered a dish and loved it so much that they invited me to be included in an article; the same happened with Buzzfeed.”

THE AUDI Q5 AT AUDI FLATIRONS
ARTICLE BY JESSICA MORDACQ
Ryan Gruber, general sales manager at Audi Flatirons, moved himself, his wife, two kids and two large dogs from New Jersey to Colorado last year. “We needed a vehicle that we could continue our adventures in from New Jersey to Colorado,” Ryan says.
For the Grubers, that vehicle was the Audi Q5, full of comfort and style. After getting Ryan and the rest of the family and pets to Colorado, the Audi Q5 allows the adventurous family to travel through the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains and its foothills while getting to take it all in.
“We get to enjoy the picturesque views on the way to our destination with the Q5’s standard panoramic moonroof,” Ryan says. But, he and his family “didn’t just want to just see the views from afar, we wanted to be a part of them.”
Driver's Notebook
The Audi Q5 helps them get to hikes and day trips with a 261 horsepower, four-cylinder engine and allwheel drive. Dual clutch transmission—along with Audi drive select, which adjusts engine, transmission and steering to the road you’re driving on—ensures the proper application of power up and down the mountain range.
“The vehicle is packed with machinery you would find in more rugged vehicles. But that functionality has not been paid for with the vehicle’s elegant look or luxurious interior,” Ryan says of the Audi Q5. “It is more than capable for any adventure big or small.”

Stella's Cucina Brings the Spirit of Italy to Boulder

You would be forgiven if you thought there was a secret handshake, a wink and a nod, or a pattern of knocking on the nonchalant solid steel door with emblazoned "S" on the handle to let you into the newest downtown restaurant, which has arrived with such excitement. (One friend exclaimed, “You NEED to go!”)Yet, no such bravado is needed, simply open the door and arrive at the enchanting Stella's Cucina.
Stella’s is a discreet, intimate and warm take on the traditional Trattoria that namesake Stella Spanu has lovingly curated. “This is really an embodiment of my heart and soul,” says the ebullient Stella, “so every detail is something that I chose. The lush tones, the low banquette; I'm 5 feet, so I want to be able to put my arm up!”
Partnering with Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo, the room is an immersive gastronomic experience. Velvet navy blue walls with gold trim, a magnificent centerpiece bar with an illuminating dramatic skylight, and a full wall visual display of what you may think are possibly amoebas but which are actually “a 118-minute loop of AI distortions of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.”
“I wanted to do something completely different than what Boulder has had before,” says Stella. A native New Yorker via Rome and Paris with restaurateur parents, the essence and heritage of those stylish locales have been infused throughout. “I grew up dining out often and believe that food is the center of everything, so I put everything I know into the space.”

The lighting is perfectly muted via globe sconces, the chairs dangerously comfortable (“I sat in over 100 chairs,” Stella says), and the ambiance is a relaxed sophistication via the nightly live jazz or DJ.
“A full sensory experience is what we have created. People are hungry for something new, and post-Covid, they want to dance and enjoy the night.” Come 10 pm, the space can and does accommodate a dance floor per the enthusiasm of that evening's guests, “We move the cocktail tables, and suddenly we have a discotheque,” Stella says giddily.
Chef Filippo Piccini, a native Tuscan, is emboldened by the Rocky Mountain agricultural offerings such as Colorado lamb and local spicy greens. His approach to the classics of Italian cooking is one of adding the “hidden twist.” As the famed Italian historian Luigi Barzini famously stated, “The definitive recipe of any Italian dish has not yet appeared. We are still creating.” Thus there is Beef Carpaccio with Parmigiano foam, Lamb Tagliolini with Cherry and Pomegranate reduction and multiple vegan and gluten-free options. The Eggplant “filet” has more than once been tried by myself to make sure it really is that delicious; it is.
The desserts are just as inventive with saffron-infused Panna Cotta, a “Terra” Misu served in a requisite flower pot, and for the chocoholic, Montenevoso with Torrone parfait. Don’t think about calories; just enjoy.
The Espresso Martini, complete with Ambrosia Espresso from Milan and pink peppercorn, is in extremely high demand. The Golden Gin and Tonic with cardamom, orange and rose have many dedicated acolytes. For the mocktail devotee, the Spiced Tonic with clove, ginger, cinnamon and sage is a refreshing delight, and with such ingenuity in constant display around the bar, you will more than likely want to volunteer as a repeat taste tester.
As Stella shares, “We couldn’t be happier to be here. We live here and are excited to welcome so many guests to be part of what we have created.”
As the multiple guests line up in the hallway waiting to enter sans password, it’s clear Boulder is so happy to have them. Cin Cin.

ROOM FOR THE MESSY
TWO BOULDER MATERNAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TACKLE COMPLEX LAYERS OF MOTHERHOOD IN THEIR PODCAST, MOTHERHOOD UNCUT
For some time, many mothers have created a perception of perfection to prove they can effortlessly balance everything in life. They appear to have it totally together, often prompting the question, “How do you do it all?”
Truthfully? No mom has it totally together—a freeing revelation that’s the central theme of the podcast Motherhood Uncut, launched last year by Deb Rubin and Kate Kripke. The Boulderbased licensed clinical social workers became fast friends years ago after meeting in a moms’ group, then officing their private practices in the same building. Kate founded the Postpartum Wellness Center of Boulder and runs her own maternal health consulting business, while Deb focuses on teaching Mother Daughter Journey workshops designed to strengthen those bonds.
Using their extensive training and personal experiences (each have two adolescent daughters), Deb and Kate have built their careers on coaching mothers through all stages of their journey. Now, with wisdom, searing vulnerability and uber-contagious laughter, they chat publicly about the less-discussed, less-thanpretty moments that also define motherhood.
“What Deb and I are doing is not typical of how therapists move through the world,” Kate says. “We don't traditionally share a lot of ourselves with our clients. But with this podcast, we go first in acknowledging that we don't know the answers so that other people can do the same.”
Unedited and unfiltered, the podcast was born from equally organic conversations the two friends had while sitting on their

front porches, hiking or out to dinner. It covers topics such as motherhood and sexuality, substance abuse, depression and judgment. With every episode, Deb and Kate keep it real in the hopes of shattering the illusion of perfection.
“Kate and I have had many moments when we’d just crawl into each other’s beds in tears,” Deb says. “In those times, we could hold the other one up and lend perspective. I think the stigma around asking for help is changing rapidly. The willingness to be really human is becoming much more normalized.”
Knowing they aren’t alone in experiencing the messier parts of mothering also shaped the inception of Motherhood Uncut. In their work and in their personal lives, Deb and Kate came to understand the value of not shying away from support from other mothers. The village mentality, Deb says, is something mothers need now more than ever. Above all, their desire is to help women feel seen.
For their second season, the duo started interviewing guests for their views on motherhood. In a recent episode, those guests were their four daughters, who are just as close with one another as their moms. It was a no-holds-barred, tell-all conversation where they talked openly about the way their mothers parented.

and serves as a reminder that moms shouldn’t strive for perfection—they should take mistakes and struggles and turn them into opportunities for growth and strength.
“What makes the podcast work is our willingness to talk about the hard things,” Kate says. “If you're willing to lean into the messy and the hard, you're going to benefit exponentially.”
“They were very honest, which is so cool,” Kate says. “We said, ‘We’re going to love you no matter what. We’re all clumsily figuring this out together.’”

Los Lobos leans toward Tejano, folk, rock ‘n roll and R&B and Ozomatli blends a wide range of musical viewpoints with salsa, hip-hop and reggae. Come and celebrate the one-and-a-quarter century anniversary at Boulder’s National Historical Landmark and take in the music, along with the inspiring history.

Andrew Bird’s impressive list of 17 studio albums, including his latest, Inside Problems, will show up in songs over two nights of the Chautauqua Summer Concert Series this August. The enigmatic whistler, vocalist and talented multi-instrumentalist brings his chamber folk to Boulder’s historic venue. Bird’s previous work includes a 2022 Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album and a visually magnificent series of short films called Echolocations, in which he brings his instrument to acoustically riveting spaces including a stone aqueduct in Lisbon, the Los Angeles River and a remote Utah canyon.
The acoustic-driven sound of The Wood Brothers’ take on American roots music is truly heartening in the age of endless technology. On their latest album, Heart Is the Hero, they limit themselves to taping on 16-track, instead of using a computer for endless tracking options and the result is a record rife with traditionalism and off-beat creativity. Drawing acclaim from both NPR and Rolling Stone, The Wood Brothers will be bringing their take on Americana and countrified soul to Chautauqua this July.

Hailing from Philadelphia, Amos Lee has been making albums since 2004 with his signature folk/blues sound. His latest, My Ideal (A Tribute to Chet Baker Sings), is, of course, a salute to the legendary vocalist and trumpeter Chet Baker. Amos Lee's milk-andhoney singing voice and subtle funk on the guitar liken him to artists like Bill Withers and John Prine.
Nicolas Reyes has been the leader of Gipsy Kings for the past 30 years. Founded in Southern France in 1978, Gipsy Kings musical focus is bringing rumba, flamenco and salsa to a worldwide audience and blending those styles with pop and Latin rhythms. Their success and popularity ramped up in the late 1980s with their self-titled third album and their hit “Bamboleo.” Their music has been featured in films such as Toy Story 3 and The Big Lebowski, has earned a Grammy nomination and has sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

The focus on women’s health is often centered around birth control, fertility and pre/post-partum care—all vitally important to provide and protect. However, we have been overlooking a large portion of women searching for insight and treatment for peri and postmenopausal symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, anxiety, mood swings and brain fog, among others.
There has been a recent uptick in information and conversation around this formerly taboo phase of women’s lives, as Susan Dominus of the New York Times discussed in one of her recent articles, hormone therapy, popular in the 90s fell into ill repute based on a single imperfect study, leaving many women hesitant to try this type of treatment or even to discuss it with their doctors. To be clear, there can be risks associated with HRT (hormone replacement therapy) but the fact that so little research has been done and so many women are suffering, highlights, as professor Rebecca Thurston said in the aforementioned article, that “we have a high cultural tolerance for women’s suffering, it’s not regarded as important.”
It is time to change that.
Actress Naomi Watts, who recently founded a femme-centric wellness line
called Stripes, says she created it because “women deserve support, solutions and the space to figure it all out. Because while menopause may be part of midlife, midlife is a lot more than just menopause.” Many other brands are following suit with products designed to meet women where they are and boost energy, confidence, health and libido, like Pause, Tabu, local favorite LarkLove, Kindra, and Joi, a digital health clinic for women, which offers personalized prescriptions.
Just like any other type of health care, it can be harrowing to decide what kind of treatment is right for you.
Of course, speaking with your regular healthcare provider is a good place to start but if that conversation doesn’t provide you with the breadth or depth of information you are wanting there are many additional local avenues available.
Carrie Ballas at Boulder Integrative Health offers functional medicine solutions for hormone imbalance, sleep disorders and other associated symptoms that focus on your biochemical individuality to create tailor-made solutions.
Karen Kaufman at Kaufman Health and Hormone Center has a passion for providing personalized and comprehensive care to her patients using a combination
of conventional medicine and her functional medicine training. She is a fount of knowledge, and often uses a combination of hormone replacement and supplements to find balance for her patients.
Acupuncture and nutrition are also super helpful tools to have in your kit. Cameron Delaney at Solstice Health is a gifted healer that specializes in women’s health at all stages of life. Julie Pelaez and her partner, Jo Schaalman, are guides to eating cleaner and the founders of the Conscious Cleanse, which is good at any age—but can be particularly helpful for boosting energy if you are feeling depleted.
Some women breeze through menopause and their normal routine is enough to keep things on track but many, many others need guidance, information and a wide array of treatments to feel like their best selves in this transitionary time. As singer and philosopher Erykah Badu, 51, posted on her Instagram, “I miss the thought of lil babies in my belly and periods and womb stuff like that, BUT I AM NOW ABLE TO SHARE MY WISDOM AND JOYFULLY GROW INTO THE GLITTER DRIPPING PHOENIX CREATED THRU FIRE.”
Truth.

Botany plants lately?
This is the way to have room for them all! (There are ~1,000 plants in this vertical garden! ) Even better, with external monitoring & automatic watering/feeding, it doesn’t even require a green thumb. And thanks to carefully selected, climate-specific plants, it thrives each growing season!
