LIFESTYLE LETTER
Saying Yes! To Adventure
July 2022 PUBLISHER
Andy Manz | amanz@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR
Kate Manz | kmanz@citylifestyle.com PUBLICATION DIR ECTOR
Some days life catapults you into Plan B and C pretty quickly. Right before one of our very first mother/daughter trips of the summer, our best-laid plans flew right out the window. A friend we had arranged a trip with, where getting together was the primary purpose and the location a distant second, canceled due to some health concerns. The decision was unanimous; it was better for her to take the time to rest. Yet my daughter still insisted we pack our bags and head out of town. I figured, why not? Our original plans were (miraculously) refundable, and we’d already carved out the time and set aside the funds. I let my daughter choose the new spot with the stipulation that it had to be within a six-hour drive. And while it wouldn’t have been one of my top destinations, it didn’t matter. The weekend’s intention was to connect. My parenting secret for carefree travels entails saying yes to nearly everything possible (within general safety and financial reason). Stopping at random roadside attractions? Let’s do it! Fast food? Supersize it! Yet something occurred to me during our car ride back. All these years, I thought I’d said yes for her. It turns out, it’d also been for me. There is something so freeing about letting go of rules and truly living in the moment—temporarily dismissing all the shoulds. You’ll know when you’ve vacationed right…when you start craving getting back to everyday life. What will you say yes to this summer? Happy Travels,

Chautauquas started on Lake Erie in the late 1800s as an outdoor training program for Sunday school teachers. By the turn of the century, the assemblies became a classic American event that attracted lecturers and performers to present for thousands of gathered listeners. One of the few remaining Chautauquas in the United States, Boulder’s has hosted more than 120 years of emerging and established musicians and speakers, film festivals and art exhibitions, attracting more than a million visitors every year to the park against the Flatirons. Here are a few highlights of this year’s summer concert series at the Colorado Chautauqua.

Coming down from the Mount Sanitas Trailhead, mere blocks from Pearl Street’s stretch of stores, restaurants and coffee shops, it’s a little too easy to transition from an early morning hike to a quick bite to eat or an afternoon on the town. Acme Fine Goods at 915 Walnut Street in Louisville helps locals to expect the unexpected, fitting in comfortably and fashionably wherever the day takes them. “You never know when someone’s going to ask you to go climb a mountain or go fly fishing,” says Acme Fine Goods’ Founder Eric Reed. “Or you can go on a hike, then spend the rest of the day in town and not look out of place.” Acme Fine Goods doesn’t just sell hiking apparel, but also everyday Coloradoan utility items and home goods that reflect Eric’s own experience as an outdoor enthusiast and employee in the industry. “It’s not just for hiking the trail,” Eric says of his store, which opened in 2019. “Your adventure doesn’t have to be to the top of Long’s Peak. It could be drinking wine in RiNo.”

HAVING SERVICED STORES LIKE HIS AROUND THE COUNTRY, HE KNEW WHICH REPRESENTATIVES WOULD FILL ACME FINE GOODS WITH THE QUALITY OUTDOOR BRANDS HE’D GOTTEN TO KNOW SO WELL.
After working in the outdoor wholesale and retail sectors for years, selling everything from food and wine to fly fishing equipment, Eric noticed what was working and what wasn’t for his employers and competitors. Having serviced stores like his around the country, he knew which representatives would fill Acme Fine Goods with the quality outdoor brands he’d gotten to know so well. Eric fills Acme Fine Goods with useful, versatile pieces and assists his customers in finding items they don’t typically see at chain outerwear stores or brands they might’ve discovered online. “What sets us apart is a service-based store,” Eric says. “If you go to the mall and scream for help, you’ll be lucky if anyone comes to you.” His advice for choosing the right gear revolves around comfort and personal preference. For men, he suggests a look that doesn’t scream Nike outlet, like Roark’s Run Amok collection full of compression and stretch material. For women, Eric recommends Amundsen’s twotone materials that are breathable and durable with real pockets. Here is a list of Eric’s ideal outfits for a hike at Sanitas. AcmeFineGoods.com CONTINUED >

Boulder residents have always had a fondness for their land and community. A good portion of our surroundings is used for agriculture, which helps provide fresh food to the area, including our amazing restaurants. Did you know you can partake in all the marvelous options that local farms have to offer? Whether you are seeking out veggies, farm dining experiences, fresh-cut flowers, various meats or just fancy some coffee, there are so many extraordinary options available. Here are just a few that might suit you. CSA with Cure Choose from the many CSA membership options at Cure. From small to large shares of vegetables that feed up to five people for 20 weeks or limit it to simply eggs, flowers or fruit. Or if staying caffeinated is more your thing, coffee is an option, too. With a CSA membership you are making a commitment to support the farm, which helps fund seed, water, equipment and labor in the early season when expenses are high. Become a part of the farm’s success and community by becoming a member today. U-pick Flower Farm with Ya Ya Pick your own flowers at Ya Ya Farm & Orchard. No reservations are required and picking can be done during farm stand hours (not yet announced) from August through November. They have beautiful dahlias, zinnias, sunflowers and many other long-lasting cut flower options. You can even pack a picnic and visit the farm stand, orchard and their farm animals, which include Percheron draft horses, mini donkeys, chickens, ducks and peacocks. Kids Camps and Programs at Growing Gardens Children between the ages of 5 and 11 can experience the wonders of an urban farm at Growing Gardens Summer Camp. Each week from early June through mid-August has a different theme, from field to fork cooking to survival skills. Kids will tend to the garden, explore through the lens of art and science and make tasty snacks from the bounty of their harvests. Local Butchery Options at Western Daughters Stop by Western Daughters Butcher Shoppe to purchase 100% grass-fed and pasture-raised meats. Whether you are wanting to cook healthy food or just looking for some fantastic flavored meats, they have you covered. They’re committed to a humane and pastured life for all the animals that are sourced for food. You can even sign up for the Meat Club, with each box loaded with fresh and seasonal cuts straight from the butcher.

IDEAS FROM GENERATION WILD ON HOW TO HELP COLORADO KIDS SPEND MORE TIME OUTSIDE

The Call of the Backyard Summertime is in full swing. For the parents and caregivers of kids, it’s a time that’s especially ripe for heading outside to enjoy Colorado’s gorgeous sunshine and sights, whether it’s from a park, a trail or the comfort of their own backyard. Prioritizing these outdoor ventures of play, activity and simple relaxation is a concept at the core of the Generation Wild mission. Generation Wild blossomed out of Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), a program established in 1992 by voter approval that invests a portion of proceeds from the Colorado Lottery to preserve and enhance the natural beauty and splendor of the Centennial State. The organization has helped facilitate over 5,500 conservation and recreation projects across Colorado, including ventures that have benefitted state parks, trails, wildlife, rivers, open space and more. In the summer of 2017, GOCO launched Generation Wild as part of its initiative to reconnect today’s generation of children to the outdoors—an ambitious yet crucial goal aimed at both improving youth well-being and helping to
raise the next generation of responsible stewards and champions of nature. Today, Generation Wild is a statewide program and campaign that is supported by hundreds of partners across Colorado. In an effort to inspire parents and caregivers to help the kids in their lives flourish through time spent outdoors, it consists of a bounty of research-driven information, resources and tips. The organization founds its suggestions in ample research, noting abundant benefits to kids’ time spent outside when it comes to their growth, development, fostering of creativity and mental, emotional and physical well-being. The organization also offers numerous strategies, suggestions and activity ideas for parents and caregivers to facilitate this outside time, including many “Backyard Hacks” that make prioritizing time spent outdoors as easy and approachable as possible. Looking for a way to help the kids in your life enjoy more outdoor time this summer? Here is just one of Generation Wild’s suggestions for a fun, engaging activity that you can partake in right at home.

With these warm summer days heating us up, our appetite, too, is readying for a season of fun—and flavor. Turning our sights towards East Boulder County, we collected a few of our go-to restaurants, plus new ones, that reveal the best in the neighborhood. Artisanal pizzas, traditional French pastries, and local craft beer, to name just a few of the mouthwatering options. Happy summering!
JEANNOT’S PATISERRIE & BISTRO Taking a note from the French, Jeannot’s Patisserie brings the country's traditions, culture and flavor to life through its made-from-scratch menu. A stop-over here means stepping into a classic European atmosphere enhanced by the aroma of fresh-baked bread, croissants, quiches, cakes and tarts. Dishes are made using local, seasonal produce offering savory and sweet food with a sustainable approach. You must try their decadent hot chocolate made with 64% real cacao. Bon appétit! WESTBOUND & DOWN
GHOST BOX
The best place to get up and get down! Westbound & Down Mill brings a selection of artisan pizzas crafted with their famous scratch-match dough in both square and round styles. The man behind the evolving menu, Chef Casey Taylor, utilizes locally sourced ingredients, including their in-house brewed beers, ensuring you’ll always find the perfect pairing for your pint. Enjoy their patio outfitted with 40 seats and perched beneath the summer sun, or their modern tap room offering 18 beers, including several award-winners, and a curated selection of canned beers to go. WestBoundAndDownMill.com
This is your spot where the whole family gets what they want without sparing an ounce of flavor. Try the Detroit-style Ghost Pig pizza made with bacon, charred pineapple, jalapeño, red onion, ghost pepper sauce and red sauce. If you are more of a sandwich lover, then the Toasted Italian might be for you. It's filled with soppressata, mortadella, pepperoni and smoked provolone, plus a dash of red wine vinegar and a lettuce salad, all served on a hoagie roll. (Spice enthusiasts should ask for the ghost pepper edition.) The much-loved Lafayette Coney Dog is famous in the Midwest and is made with an extra-long DDD (double-dog dare). GhostBoxPizza.com
740 FRONT Ghost Box Pizza
Summer heat sparking a craving for an icy beverage? 740 Front’s Happy Hour (Tuesday through Saturday, 4-5:30 p.m.) offers their famous cocktails and beers on tap at fantastic prices. Their classic, vintage cocktails ($6-7) include an old-fashioned, Manhattan, bee’s knees, margarita, and Moscow mule. Tap beers go from $5 and wine by the glass for $7. Enjoy these all at their verdant, park-like outdoor area deemed the “Nicest Patio in Louisville.” 740Front.com

CHOCOLATERIE STAM Here is where you will find a little slice of Holland, where cacao connoisseurs guide you through an incredible selection of melt-in-your-mouth chocolates. The Stam family originally opened their chocolate shop in 1816 in a small town north of Amsterdam before making their way stateside in 1997, where their family recipes would call Lafayette home. Every chocolate is handmade by one of the Stam grandsons, including their milk or dark chocolate bonbonnieres, tempered medallions, and single and double layer chocolate jewels. On your visit, don’t forget to try their homemade gelato or a coffee beverage from their European espresso bar. StamColorado.com
REELFISH Is it really summer without a crispy basket of fish n’ chips coated in a homemade batter (gluten-free) and chased with a cold brew? At Reelfish, you can get all of this and more, including fried, grilled, or blackened seafood items and local beverages like craft beer, ciders, cocktails, and sodas. Worth mentioning are their specials, like Cajun Wednesday, where catfish, hushpuppies, and slaw are served for only $11.95, and Oyster Thursdays, when fresh oysters are shucked and served for a taste of the sea all beneath the beauty of the blue Colorado sky. Whether you’re a longtime local or coming to Boulder for a mountain vacation, take a moment to review these ways to protect both yourself and our lands with Dana Watts, executive director of the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, a 28-year-old nonprofit based in Boulder. PLAN AHEAD Before heading to a trail or point of interest, consult maps, and know the regulations and restrictions of the land. AllTrails and onX Backcountry are great apps, Dana says, and the latter has wildfire alerts and fire closures features. Check the forecast as well: Is there a risk for lightning strikes or flash floods? And (almost) needless to say, bring plenty of water. Also important here, she adds, is proper gear and clothing. “Rain or temperature changes are almost aways a possibility, so having layers is the right call,” she says. “And make sure shoes or boots are comfortable, broken in and waterproof if necessary.” TRAVEL ON DURABLE SURFACES Being outdoors is all about soaking up nature while not damaging it. Staying on the trail reduces the likelihood that multiple routes will develop and scar the landscape. Do not shortcut the switchbacks (trail zigzags that climb hillsides). And because even searches for bathroom privacy are considered off-trail excursions, traverse the right surface when possible. Rock, sand and gravel can tolerate repeated trampling. In vegetation, select dry grasses, which tend to be more resistant than, say, a wet meadow or soil. Avoid disturbing puddles, mud holes or potholes, which are home to tiny desert animals. When you stop for a snack, set backpacks on rock, sand or gravel. CONTINUED >

LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND Resist the urge to remove rocks, plants and so forth. Taking a picture or sketching the flower instead of picking it is optimal—but sometimes difficult, Dana acknowledges. “When kids or adults find a special rock or seashell on their outdoor adventure, [just] make the best decision for you and for nature in that moment,” she says. Always try to learn about wildlife through quiet observation so they are not scared or forced to flee. BE CONSIDERATE Outdoor ethics is essential. To this end, keep group sizes small—or break up a large group into smaller groups—and avoid trips on holidays and busy weekends. Enjoy your music through earbuds, and keep volume low enough to hear others approaching. On narrow trails, step aside for uphill foot traffic. Take breaks on durable surfaces, well off the designated trail. Bright clothing and equipment are discouraged. Especially in open, natural areas, colors such as day-glow yellow may contribute to a crowded feeling; consider earth-toned colors to lessen visual impacts. LNT.org

“I have seen an increase of children and teens needing therapy in recent years due to the increase of the unpredictability they have experienced,” says Jamie Peschke, MA, RP, of The Nest Creative Therapy Center in Lafayette. “The pandemic has had a major impact on all of us, removing our sense of safety, limiting accessibility to self-care and community, increasing the fear of the unknown and many other changes that impact one’s overall mental health. Most children and teens have not had a lifetime to practice skills of transition and loss of safety, as a result, all can cause an increase of stress on their mental health.” Fortunately, the I Matter program is here to help. A temporary behavioral health services program that provides youth with access to mental health and substance use disorder services and

that addresses needs that may have resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic is now available, thanks to Colorado House Bill 21-1258. I Matter is funded by the Colorado Department of Human Services and supplies youth with up to six free behavioral health sessions and reimburses participating providers, which are licensed clinicians from agencies and independent contractors. Sessions can be held virtually or in person. Jamie says, “A huge benefit I see for children and teens seeking therapy is increasing their self-awareness, expressing emotions in a healthy way and asking for help. Therapy can help children normalize what they are going through and meet emotions with curiosity instead of self-judgment.” To get started, parents and youth can visit IMatterColorado.org.
