Greetings from the Western Slope! AS I’M SURE MANY OF YOU ARE ALSO DOING, OUR FAMILY IS BEATING THE HEAT AND ENJOYING SOME TIME IN THE HIGH COUNTRY. Being just a short drive away from the mountains is a huge benefit to living on the front range. My wife and I try to always remind our kids that as we were growing up in the midwest, getting the chance to come visit the Rocky Mountains was the highlight of our summers. We feel so fortunate to have some of the world’s most beautiful scenery at arm’s length. Buying popsicles from the Jeep rental shop down the street, playing in cool mountain streams, and breathing in the fresh pine can make all of us feel like a kid on vacation. Wherever your travels take you this summer, we wish you great joy with your loved ones and friends!

The Solar Impact HOW BOULDER’S PROGREEN SOLAR PROMOTES GREEN ENERGY ADOPTION FOR A BRIGHTER TOMORROW ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO.
ADAM KENYON VIVIDLY REMEMBERS HIS MOTHER TEACHING HIM THE CLASSIC ADAGE AS A YOUNG CHILD THAT, IF YOU EVER BORROW SOMETHING, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS RETURN IT IN AS GOOD OR BETTER CONDITION THAN WHEN YOU BORROWED IT. As CEO of Boulder’s ProGreen Solar, it’s a sentiment that Adam carries with him in his mission to find practical, accessible solutions to increase solar adoption.
42
Boulder Lifestyle | July 2021
“I see myself as living on borrowed time on a borrowed planet,” Adam says. “I don’t want to pass the world on to my kids and to future generations in worse shape than during the time I had the opportunity to benefit from it. Doing our part to reduce carbon emissions through green energy is helping us achieve that ‘better’ status, which should be the ultimate goal.” ProGreen Solar is a partner company to Boulder’s GreenPoint Roofing, which has been serving the roofing and solar needs of Boulder residents for over a decade. Adam’s company was founded with the intent to focus solely on sustainable energy applications and to build world-class solar systems for home and business owners throughout Colorado. A Colorado native, Adam admits that the corporate world was never quite the right fit for him. Driven by an innate need to know that he was helping create a better world in his professional endeavors, Adam homed in on providing approachably priced green energy solutions to, as he puts it, quite literally build a brighter future for everyone.

TECH SAVVY (CONTINUED)
“A lot of people underestimate the impact that global warming and human-caused climate change will have,” Adam says. “But it’s scientific fact, and its impact is already very real. If we don’t start making progress in the green energy sector, future generations are all at a greater risk of an adverse world.” Why is solar an optimal green energy solution? As Adam notes, the sun doesn’t charge us to shine, and it is the most universally practical, least pollutant omitting and easiest to harness natural energy resource. And while implementing solar energy was once only accessible to the affluent, companies like ProGreen Solar are making it a more realistic option for people of all economic statuses. All of these factors combine to make residential rooftop solar in particular an ideal economical, topographical and environmentally friendly option. Adam also notes that solar energy will benefit future generations in myriad ways. First, solar adoption will allow society as a whole more abundant access to the most fundamental resource for cultural development—energy. “Making clean energy more readily available via a sustainable means like solar will have a tremendous impact on the advancement of civilization as a whole,” Adam says. There are also financial benefits on both a macro and micro level. From personal energy savings to recouping the astronomical costs of responding to extreme weather instances— which Adam notes that scientists say will only increase in magnitude and frequency with ongoing emissions—the monetary benefits and their compounding effects are inimitable. Adam looks forward to continuing his ProGreen Solar mission by working with emerging technologies to not just offset new CO2 emissions via solar, but to help sequester them as well. “The best time to act on these problems was yesterday,” says Adam. “But the second best time? Right now.”

ONE MAY THINK OF COLORADO’S PRISTINE MOUNTAIN OASIS AT BEAVER CREEK AS A PREMIER WINTER ESCAPE, BUT SUMMERING IN THE HIGH-ALPINE SNOW MOUNTAIN RANGE IS TRULY SOMETHING SPECIAL. And for the finest accommodation in the area, Beaver Creek Lodge is a clear choice. As an Autograph Collection Hotel, the amenities and regal design of the hotel impress a range of visitors, including in-room fireplaces, kitchenettes, plush beds, and public spaces like an art gallery, sauna and steam rooms as well as private on-site dining options. The Show Must Go On AFTER A 16-MONTH CLOSURE, LOCAL THEATRE COMPANY REOPENS WITH OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE
THERE’S SOMETHING TO BE SAID ABOUT THE POWER OF IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES RATHER THAN WATCHING ACTORS ON A SCREEN, ESPECIALLY DURING A TIME WHEN WE ARE LOOKING FOR HUMAN CONNECTION. After a 16-month hiatus caused by the pandemic, Boulder’s Local Theatre Company (LTC) is back with its first in-person performance. For the last 10 years, Boulder-based LTC has been home to hundreds of local artists. In addition to performances, the company hosts annual labs developing new plays from inception to final curtain call. The theatre group reopened on June 24 with “Discount Ghost Stories: Songs from the Rockies,” a play developed through LTC’s Local Labs in 2019. Summertime Sounds At Chautauqua
LIVE MUSIC
GEAR UP FOR A SUMMER FULL OF LIVE SHOWS
8/20 THE JAYHAWKS
8/2 MAT KEARNEY
The Jayhawks and their rootsy sound were definitely swimming against the tide when they emerged from a crowded Minnesota music scene in 1985. Over the course of two decades, nine albums, countless memorable live shows and enough personal drama to fill a couple of Behind the Music episodes, this beloved band soared to heights few ever achieve while winning the hearts and minds of numerous critics, fans and peers in the process. The band's new studio album, Back Roads And Abandoned Motels, was released in the summer of 2018, featuring Jayhawks' versions of songs Gary Louris had previously written with other artists plus two new compositions.
Kearney is back with his new studio album January Flower. Written between an isolated retreat in Joshua Tree and his home studio, January Flower sees Kearney in his rawest form, distilling the songwriting process and rediscovering the joy of making music.

IN THE MIDST OF THE PANDEMIC, JESSIE CAPSTICK AND HER HUSBAND KNEW THEY NEEDED TO ADD A LITTLE SPARK BACK INTO THEIR CHILDREN’S EYES. “The kids were isolated, and as parents, we were exhausted,” Jessie says. They reached out to friend Mike Delaney, who, according to Jessie, is an expert builder of all things creative and cool and had once mentioned he wanted to build a treehouse for them. “We wanted our kids to have memories of this time in their lives that extended beyond the isolation and worry,” Jessie says. “We are all about independent play and exploration, and we wanted to feel comfortable letting our youngest little guy, Smith, age 3, play in the treehouse by himself without worrying he could fall or get stuck up high.” The other children include Jack, age 9, and Ivy, age 6. The intention was to meet the kids where they were currently with room to grow and transform for tween and teenage years. At the moment, the ground floor serves as a place to play kitchen, and the top-level is perfect for drawing comic books with friends. Instead of a standard treehouse design— where you climb a ladder and then enter the house—this treehouse is built around the tree, using parts of the tree trunk to divide up the space organically. Rather than a house stuck in a tree, you get the sense the tree is bursting out of the house with limbs shooting up through three floors. The dramatic roofline consisting of plastic sheeting allows everyone inside to experience the beauty and majesty of the enormous tree, a living-breathing piece of nature.

10 TOP NATIONAL PARKS TO VISIT NOW
THE NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM INCLUDES MORE THAN 400 NATIONAL PARKS IN THE UNITED STATES. Known for their natural wonders and unmatched beauty, the national parks also encompass lands that helped shape the history of this country and hold cultural value and significance. This list of national parks just scratches the surface of the natural wonders to wonderlands to discover, but it includes 10 of the most stunning national parks in the United States.
1.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK Colorado’s Rocky Mountains became a national park in 1915, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Rocky Mountain Park Act. It spans 415 square miles and includes majestic mountains, abundant wildlife, incredible hiking trails and so much more. The park is a natural wonderland teeming with opportunities to fish, hike, ride horses and bikes and enjoy the spectacular views. Wintertime brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding.
2.
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite National Park spans nearly 1,200 square miles. Here you’ll find giant sequoia trees, breathtaking waterfalls, vast meadows and more. The park is home to unique rock formations like El Capitan, Half Dome and Glacier Point. Gaze in awe at Yosemite’s thousands of waterfalls, including Yosemite Falls, Ribbon Fall and Wapama Falls. Trek through the park’s three impressive groves of ancient giant sequoias, some of the rarest, oldest and largest living organisms in the world. Yosemite also offers rafting along the Merced River, where you can take in incredible views and cool off from the summer heat.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK No list of the best national parks would be complete without Yellowstone. Yellowstone is an iconic destination for many reasons, as it was designated the world’s first national park in 1872. Within its 2.2 million acres, visitors will find colorful hot springs, awe-inspiring waterfalls, fascinating mudpots, explosive geysers, diverse wildlife and more. Because the park sits on a dormant volcano, Yellowstone is home to more hot springs and geysers than anywhere else on Earth. The oldest and largest herd of bison in the country lives at Yellowstone, as well as elk, wolves and grizzly bears. The park is most famous for Old Faithful, a geyser that erupts nearly 20 times a day at heights of up to 180 feet.

With its fascinating landscape composed of hoodoos, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters and whimsical limestone rock formations, a visit to Bryce Canyon is often likened to a visit to another planet. This stunning landscape, formed by wind, water and snow, draws hikers, rock climbers and cross-country skiers. The park isn’t a canyon; it’s a natural amphitheater carved into the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce Canyon’s extreme altitude offers stunning panoramic views of three states, and its minimal exposure to light pollution offers premium stargazing opportunities.
5. GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and the United States and is often referred to as the “Crown of the Continent.” Named after the remnants of glaciers formed during the ice age, this natural wonderland spans more than 1 million acres and boasts two mountain ranges. Visitors will also find more than 700 glacial lakes and many hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Trail of the Cedars is a short loop hike that features a raised boardwalk that passes through a fragrant forest of giant red cedar trees. Going-to-the-Sun Road, known as one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the country, is a paved, two-lane highway that divides the park into east and west regions.
6.
ZION NATIONAL PARK Another natural marvel located in Utah, Zion National
Park is known as one of the most accessible national parks in the country. Its close proximity to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Southern California—plus its stunning vistas— draws millions of visitors each year. Zion National Park’s colorful sandstone cliffs, lush plateaus covered in pine and junipers, narrow canyons, the Virgin River, plus seeps, springs and waterfalls are just some of the scenic wonders here. One of Zion’s most popular hikes is known as the Narrows, the slimmest section of Zion Canyon. Other popular attractions include the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Angels Landing, Observation Point and Canyon Overlook Trail. 98

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park spans 310,000 acres and towers above
the Jackson Hole Valley. The Teton Mountains, the youngest in the Rockies, are reflected majestically on the surfaces of six pristine lakes and the Snake River. Jenny Lake offers fishing, boating, paddling and swimming. This scenic spot also attracts photographers and artists looking to capture its natural beauty. Experienced climbers can summit the 13,770-foot Grand Teton, and long-distance hikers can take the Paintbrush Canyon-Cascade Canyon Loop for impressive views of it. Other activities include wildlife watching, kayaking the Snake River, taking a guided boat tour and exploring the Mormon Row Historic District.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK The Grand Canyon, located in Arizona, was formed by
the Colorado River and is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and 1 mile deep. The UNESCO World Heritage Site can be accessed from its different rims. The South Rim is the most visited and is accessible year-round. It is home to Grand Canyon Village and Bright Angel Trail. The West Rim is home to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that extends 70 feet over the edge of a cliff. The North Rim is the most remote access point, allowing visitors to experience the park firsthand through intense hiking and backpacking and thrilling river rafting.

9. ARCHES NATIONAL PARK Yet another otherworldly destination in Utah is Arches National Park, defined by its natural sandstone arches, stunning red rocks and beautiful colors. The park has the largest concentration of natural arches in the world, which attracts photographers who capture the mesmerizing shadows at dawn and dusk. Hikers can take advantage of Arches National Park’s numerous trails ranging from short hikes to Balanced Rock and the Double Arch to more strenuous routes through the Fiery Furnace and up to the Delicate Arch. The park boasts North America’s longest arch, the Landscape Arch, spanning 306 feet. Don’t miss the Windows Section, which has some of the largest arches in the park, including North Window, South Window and Turret Arch.
10. HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK To visit one of the country’s best national parks, journey to Maui’s Haleakala National Park. The name of this national park translates to “House of the Sun.” Legend goes that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood at the volcano’s summit, slowing its descent to make the days last longer. The Haleakala Crater is a dormant volcano that sits at 10,000 feet above sea level, and visitors flock to this location to view one of the most spectacular sunrises on Earth. Haleakala National Park spans more than 30,000 acres and includes red deserts and rock gardens near the summit and waterfalls and streams in coastal Kipahulu. The park is home to more endangered species than any other park in the National Park Service.
Hopefully, this list of the 10 best national parks has inspired you to start planning your next adventure. Whether the mountains are calling, your inner daredevil needs to be satiated or a scenic road trip is in order, America’s national parks are begging to be explored!
