Everything Outdoors Is it finally time to get outside yet? I’m only kidding. As all you fellow Boulderites know, it’s always time to get outside to enjoy the Boulder terrain, but there’s something extra special about summer. Here’s why. June is my birthday month. I’m turning 30—again. School is out for summer, so I get to spend extra time with my whole family, and the days are extra long, giving me more time to soak in all of that spare family time in the great outdoors. The timing couldn’t be better since the past few months inspired me to extend our living room to the outdoors. Our deck is now an extension of our home, thanks to Creative Living’s exterior design expertise, which we learned a bit more about the locals behind the brand this issue. In honor of Father’s Day (Sunday, June 20), we gathered together five men and their children to discuss what fatherhood means to them. And as part of my personal Father’s Day plans, we met with the pros at Boulder’s Full Cycle to get the low down on e-bikes and insider-only intel on where to start your e-bike adventure. Lastly, we share a cocktail recipe—okay, two cocktail recipes—that source the sea-

PATIOS. DECKS. BACKYARDS. BALCONIES. These are all venues brimming with the potential to become true extensions of a home—opportunities for an outdoor space to become an outdoor room in which a home’s interior style and functionality thrive in the open air. This is the philosophy that Micheline Stone and her Creative Living brand represent. Creative Living is a masterful embodiment of modern outdoor living and all that it entails. A single destination that includes all of the products and needs associated with creating contemporary outdoor living spaces, the brand prides itself on its impeccable customer service, focus on sustainability and supporting the local community. Not to mention its high-style, high-function outdoor living designs.

ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS

“We’re here to help homeowners envision and realize the outdoor living spaces of their dreams,” says Micheline, owner and manager of Creative Living. “Every project is unique, fun and exciting, and our all-encompassing shop is one-of-a-kind in Colorado.” Achieving the perfect blend of modern style and peak functionality is foundational to Creative Living across all of its offerings, from its transitional furniture to its outdoor kitchens, water and fire features, artful accents and more. Each piece is specially made to withstand the harsh Colorado elements with an emphasis on choosing the most optimal, lasting and visually appealing materials. The furniture incorporates powder-coated aluminum and steel, Sunbrella and marine-grade fabrics and cushions, all-weather resin weaves, sustainable woods and more, while kitchens are made of stainless steel environmentally friendly powder-coating techniques. Durability, fade- and water-resistance, and easy maintenance reign supreme, and Micheline notes that Creative Living designs are made to serve homeowners for years to come. This design and functionality prowess have been especially important in recent months, as more people have found themselves spending more time at home.

“We’ve seen our clients over the past year looking to create spaces that can help them get outside of the four walls of their house while still truly feeling like they’re at home,” Micheline says. Trends in outdoor living that have accelerated and continued to grow over the past year? Larger lounge areas to help homeowners escape the stresses of the day and connect with loved ones with added elements such as cozy fire pits or tranquil fountains. Expanded modern entertainment kitchens with more appliances and gadgets, such as pizza ovens, flat-top grills and kegerators. More art panels and pieces to add intrigue and often softening function to outdoor areas. These art panel pieces are designed by Micheline herself, while sculptures and stone fountains are sourced from local and regional artists. With a showroom in Denver’s Santa Fe Art District and a newly opened Summit County location, Micheline and the Creative Living team look forward to a bright future of continuing to serve their local, mountain and regional clientele, helping them fully realize the potential of their outdoor living spaces.

ROAD CREATIVITY RUNS IN THE FAMILY. Lennon Barnica and Becky Herman are a double dose of boss power as the couple each owns and manages their own Boulder-based businesses. Lennon owns the commercial production company called Wild Manor while Becky runs her own strategy and branding agency, Fadduh. Between working in the same creative industry, raising their four-year-old twin daughters and newborn son, they recently renovated a travel trailer during COVID as an expression of their interests. The project started as a quarantine escape plan for them to safely travel with kids in tow. They were in part inspired by Lennon’s time adventuring in her grandfather Lyle’s 1976 Apache pop-up camper, while Herman recalls family trips on her father’s sailboat along the east coast. They chose a 26-foot 1988 Fleetwood Lynx trailer and named him “el abuelo” (Spanish for

grandfather) after the patriarchs in their families who they were very close with: Becky's Dad, Joe, and Lennon's Grandpa, Lyle. The trailer’s sunset logo (designed by Colorado-based designer, Emilie Druss) represents the story they tell their little girls about their late granddads.

The laborious process to renovate the trailer included gutting the water-damaged interior (Lennon watched YouTube videos for reference), and used her experience in furniture design and space renovation. “We wanted something we could refurbish and make our own since the modern trailers tend to lack the details and character we love,” Lennon says. “I’m all about giving something a second chance and not buying new and then it ending up in a landfill.” It was a fast-paced and sleepless few weeks of work while neighbors looked on as the twin girls could be seen perched against power vacs and wood chip piles, while sawing went until wee hours of the morning. “People often assume we are two girls who don’t know what we're doing. Thankfully, I learned a lot from my Grandpa Lyle. Since my dad passed away when I was young, I was always outside with him, learning woodworking and how to swap spark plugs,” Lennon says. The end result shows off a thoughtful interior with lots of character. They chose a southwest modern aesthetic referencing New Mexico and the country of Mexico. Colors like teal, cream, and deep reds were inspired by the original paint on the trailer. Their bedding and throw pillows have a more classic style as seen in the couch and the built-in all made from materials that won’t fade with sun exposure. They tow their customized home-on-wheels behind their Toyota Tundra and have taken him across the west to Vail, Carbondale, Colorado Monument, Moab, Lake Mccaughnahey, Salt Lake and Park City. One of their scariest experiences was getting stuck in bumper-to-bumper I-70 traffic during a blizzard on Vail Pass next to an 11,000 drop. These first few weeks out on the road are referred to as their “trial by fire.”

“We took it out around six times last summer and the girls are in love with it,” Becky says. “It is exactly what we wanted—something fun that we could adventure in as a family and make lasting memories. We're super proud of what we created." The finishing touches will include a final paint job to the exterior with the words “el abuelo” across the front window, and adding their port as Boulder, Colorado for Becky’s sailing nostalgia. Camping and sailing as a family are among our most treasured childhood memories,” Becky says. “Getting this camper was our way of continuing that legacy, this time with our own kids.”

ANYONE WITH A GREEN THUMB (OR EVEN THOSE JUST LOOKING FOR A SPECIAL SOMETHING) LISTEN UP! Upon entering Sturtz & Copeland, one is greeted with endless opportunities for gifting and gardening. While your first impression may be that of a country cottage, visitors will soon discover a verdant, tropical oasis. Don’t be surprised if your child-like excitement gets the best of you as you stroll through the spacious indoor greenhouse filled with indoor plants, succulents, pottery, gifts and so much more. I had the pleasure of sitting down with owner Carol Riggs to hear the scoop on all things Sturtz & Copeland. A Buff alum, grandmother to eight, and community fixture, Carol exemplifies a small-business owner whose affection and commitment to her employees and customers shines through. Since taking over the business from the founding owners, Carol has cultivated relationships throughout the community, allowing her business to flourish all around Boulder and beyond.

It’s totally generational.” I can attest to this philosophy as I observe Carol greeting both long-time as well as new customers with a warm smile. From prom corsages and boutonnieres, to housewarming gifts and funeral floral arrangements, the team at Sturtz & Copeland is here to be “all-thingssolved people,” says Carol. They’re old school, and want customers to come in using all their senses—to smell, touch, see and then pick. “Everything we do makes people happy,” Carol says. “This is nice for both the employee and the customer.” There really is something for everybody, and it’s almost impossible to leave the store empty-handed.

Currently, Sturtz & Copeland offers delivery that affords customers quality, convenience and safety through a contactless service. Depending on the season and holiday, Sturtz & Copeland is ever-evolving with items such as Christmas trees and small gifts in December to Easter basket fixings and decor in the spring. No matter the unique occasion, one can count on a tasteful and refined selection all year long. Sturtz & Copeland is both an institution and an inspiration. FIVE DA D S ON FAT H E R H O O D WE GATHERED TOGETHER WITH FIVE MEN AND THEIR CHILDREN TO DISCUSS WHAT FATHERHOOD MEANS TO THEM ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO.

TODD BECKER OCCUPATION: Dermatologist, Rinnova Skin and Body KIDS: Inman, Madeline and Olivia

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST HEARTWARMING DAD MOMENT SO FAR? On our anniversary last spring, when restaurants were closed because of COVID-19, our kids dressed up and created Frasca at our house, complete with a hostess stand, customized menus and a sommelier. My wife and I agreed it was our best anniversary dinner ever. WHAT DOES BEING A DAD SYMBOLIZE TO YOU? Being a dad reminds me to be a better person and an example to my kids. Being supportive through tough times and encouraging them to take some risks even when I know they might get hurt. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS? I love exploring the mountains, hiking and camping. It is such a gift to get away from hectic everyday life and connect with each other. CONTINUED >

FIVE DADS ON FATHERHOOD (CONTINUED)

DID YOU FEEL PREPARED FOR FATHERHOOD? The best thing that prepared me for fatherhood was the year I spent following the Grateful Dead… sleepless nights, hazy days, and waking up with no idea who/where I was….

OCCUPATION: Plastic Surgeon at Boulder Plastic Surgery KIDS: Haven, Savannah, Ansley and Avery

ARE THERE SPECIFIC QUALITIES YOU WANT TO INSTILL IN YOUR CHILD? Most important qualities we are trying to instill in our kids—honesty, integrity and selflessness. DO YOU THINK TODAY’S FATHERS HAVE IT HARDER, EASIER OR JUST DIFFERENT? I have it much harder than my dad did! My kids can talk back to me, question my decisions, and make fun of my clothes.

WHAT DOES BEING A DAD MEAN TO YOU? A mixture of the hardest moments meeting the most beautiful moments. And an opportunity to act like a kid again. YOUR FAVORITE DAD JOKE OF ALL TIME? What type of bees produce milk? Boo-bees TELL US A TIME YOU EARNED YOUR #1 DAD MUG. With COVID-19 ruining all of our plans for last summer followed by the pains of virtual learning, I decided to make this Christmas the greatest one ever. My kids are holiday nerds and always asking me to tell them stories about my favorite presents when I was a kid. So this year I decided to make it one they will remember. Both boys got these incredible electric dirt bikes with fancy racing helmets and full moto-cross kits. I, of course, told them it was all from Santa, but I know for sure that this is the holiday they will remember forever.

TELL US THREE ADJECTIVES THAT BEST DESCRIBE BEING A FATHER. Entertaining, enlightening and humbling. WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A DAD? Experiencing the world through my children’s experiences. Watching little humans navigate all the pitfalls of childhood and the teen years knowing that it will be all right, but it’s going to hurt a bit. HOW WOULD YOU SPEND THE PERFECT DAY WITH YOUR CHILDREN? Solid breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon on the camp stove next to our tent in the mountains. With our raft bobbing in the river waiting for the day’s adventure. Exploring and enjoying Colorado is always the right choice. S’mores in the evening of course.

SHARING

THE STOKE THE BEAUTY OF E-BIKES WITH BOULDER’S FULL CYCLE

Boulder Lifestyle | June 2021

LET’S PUT IT OUT THERE RIGHT FROM THE TOP. In locales like Boulder that are brimming with fitness enthusiasts, there was once a pervasive stigma surrounding e-bikes—that they aren’t “real” bikes, that you don’t get a “real” workout when riding them or that they’re just for an older age group. Former professional triathlete Davide Giardini, 33, and the team at Full Cycle—one of Boulder’s best-known bike shops—are committed to breaking these misconceptions and unlocking the opportunities that e-bikes represent for cyclists of all ages, skill levels and styles. “I raced professionally on the Ironman world circuit for many years and have been amongst the most competitive, hard-core and fit cyclists in town,” says Davide, marketing manager at Full Cycle and Colorado Multisport. “And I can tell you that my absolute favorite, most used and most enjoyable bike for zipping around town quickly is my Class 3 pedal-assist Giant e-bike, which has allowed me to live a car-free life in Boulder for the last three years.” According to Davide, e-bikes are the greatest revolution in cycling in the last decade and are engineering wonders. Full Cycle sells and services Class 1 and Class 3 pedal-assist e-bikes, which boast a “smart” engine that provides an assist to pedal strokes based on a complex algorithm that considers the rider’s speed, cadence and force. The level of the mechanical assist is based on the chosen support mode, and this motorized boost blends seamlessly with the rider’s input to make pedaling feel smooth and natural. The benefits of e-bikes are myriad. They allow cyclists to ride farther and longer as well as to ride as slow or as fast as they wish. There are various assist levels available, and riders have the power to decide the level of exercise they wish to pursue. They are a small-scale travel option that is highly beneficial when it comes to achieving local transportation and climate goals, and there are also inimitable factors of fun and speed that e-bikes provide. “E-bikes don’t make you lazy, they just make you able to ride farther and faster with less effort,” says Russell Chandler, Full Cycle’s owner and general manager. “They even the playing field for older riders like me, allowing us to keep up with younger, more fit riders.” E-bikes are part of Full Cycle’s comprehensive suite of products and services that make it a one-stop-shop for cycling needs. From bike sales to rentals, fittings, group rides, coffee, and beer refreshments and more, it is a true local hub for all types of cyclists with a mission to—as Davide would say it—share their “cycling stoke” with the greater community. “In Boulder, we have a cycling paradise right in our backyard,” says Davide. “It’s one of the best places in the world to ride your bike, regardless of how fit you might be or the type of bike you’re on!”

+ 3-4 Slices of Green Apple + 6-8 Mint Leaves + 4-6 Spinach Leaves + .75 ounces Lemon + .75 ounces Simple + 1.5 ounces Spirit of Choice We’ve tried this drink with so many different spirits and just can’t decide on our favorite, so we like to leave it open to interpretation. To make, add apple, mint, spinach, lemon, and simple into a cocktail shaker (Make sure you’re using fresh lemon!) and muddle until the apples are pulp. Don’t be scared about the spinach— it doesn’t have a huge effect on the flavor but makes it a beautiful vibrant green color. Next, add ice and spirit and shake. Finally, double strain (with a Hawthorne strainer and fine mesh strainer to catch small bits of pulp) over fresh ice and enjoy!

To make this cocktail, start by prepping all ingredients. Make the simple by combining equal parts by volume hot water and sugar, stirring until dissolved (allow to cool before using). Juice a grapefruit and lemon by hand, and run rhubarb stalks through a juicer. Next, combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker WITHOUT ice. Shake hard for 10 seconds, allowing the egg white to incorporate with the other ingredients, which will create a foam. Add ice and shake again to chill. Strain into a coupe glass and enjoy!

GIVING BACK Red Lipstick Foundation Founders: John Moritz, Anne Beer, Fran Ryan, Helayne Jones

RLF RED LIPSTICK FUND PROVIDES SUPPORT TO THOSE WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST

“YOU HAVE CANCER.” Those words have echoed through millions of ears, leaving newly diagnosed patients to wonder, “How can I do this?” The Red Lipstick Fund, part of the Boulder Community Health Foundation at Boulder Community Health, strives to relieve the financial stress of cancer patients by providing grants to help ease monetary burdens so that patients can focus on what’s most important: beating cancer. Established in 1978, the BCH Foundation supports BCH, a non-profit health system, in funding the highest value health care in the community. “We’ve allocated hundreds of thousands of dollars to our patients over the years removing financial barriers and improving access to our services,” says Michele Sternitzky, associate vice president of nursing at BCH. “As caregivers we seek to help our patients, so when we have an answer for our patients’ financial burdens it brings great joy to everyone involved.”

The Red Lipstick Fund (RLF) was founded by three Boulder women: Helayne Jones, Anne Beer and Fran Ryan. The three were inspired by Marsha Moritz, their mutual friend, and her concern for cancer patients having to juggle financial, emotional and physical stress. Marsha unfortunately was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 2010. The Red Lipstick Fund got its name from the red lipstick Marsha always wore. Michele Sternitzky

“RLF has provided extraordinary support for things like airfare, bicycles, hotel stays and visas, but the everyday smaller things like groceries, gas, childcare and keeping the heat on is where RLF truly eases the everyday financial fears,” says Nanna Christensen, oncology nurse navigator at BCH. Nanna and Michele are integral to RLF and will refer their patients to the grants that the fund provides. Seeing firsthand the toll that cancer has on their patients, Nanna and Michele are grateful for the community that continuously donates to RLF through the Boulder Community Health Foundation. “RLF saves lives and provides patients with what I call ‘a hug from the community.’ We all know when we get that big hug, we breathe easier and we know that we are not alone,” Nanna says. “We’ve received many letters and firsthand thank you’s from the recipients, their families and community members who understand the impact of this grant,” Michele says. “For some patients, by providing this financial support, it allows them to make treatment their first priority.”

PARTING THOUGHTS

JUNETEENTH THIS IS WHAT FREEDOM LOOKS LIKE ARTICLE JOCE BLAKE PHOTOGRAPHY NARKITA GOLD STUDIO

DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNETEENTH IS THE OLDEST KNOWN HOLIDAY THAT COMMEMORATES THE END OF SLAVERY IN THE U.S.? Like most of Black history, this triumphant event is not taught in schools. Last year, the holiday received more recognition, with cities and states making it an official holiday. One way of celebrating Juneteenth is by keeping the multi-faceted Black experience at the forefront of this celebration. Jasmine Wiley, the creator of Narkita Gold Studio, does just that through her "Black in Denver" series that was recently on display at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art this spring. In essence, it is a visual ethnography "supporting and demonstrating the notion that Blackness, and identity in general, is not a monolith." Jasmine shared with us three portraits from her series—featuring Gwen, Euda and Solwazi—on how loving your authentic self is a form of freedom.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE BLACK IN DENVER?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE YOU HERE?

WHAT IS THE POWER OF BEING ONE’S SELF?

It is freedom. I’ve made a choice to immerse myself in Mexican, Native American, Jewish, and gay culture. I feel like I’m a part of it all. I believe that we’re all one. Because of my experiences in Denver, I find it easy to exist in different groups. The freedom to be me and the comfort to step into fully being myself is fun and full of lessons.

It means freedom. Because it’s so diverse and there aren’t large groups of folks assuming one identity, again, it makes it easier to put your toe into that pool of authenticity. And when you put it in there and you look around and you see that there are no head hunters coming to get you, then you can put your leg in and you eventually jump in. And of course, we all know, the universe supports your every move when you’re being your most authentic self. So that’s the freedom. When you are your authentic self and kind of outside of the status quo, but making it, that’s freedom. Even though I really wanted at times to be in a much Blacker environment, I feel that with my tendency to try to conform, I would have been lost and swallowed up. So being here in this place that doesn’t necessarily honor who I am anyway, allowed me to just go ahead and be all of it.

It is a powerful thing; it is our superpower. However, it takes a lot of effort and determination and work to get there. Particularly, growing up in a society that has pathologized every aspect of who I am, especially this Black identity. Being who you are in this society is not easy. I have internalized ways that being Black is wrong or to be the “scary big Black guy” that’s a threat to everyone, so that’s been a part of my healing journey. I’m healing all the ways I’ve internalized that it’s not okay to be me. At this tender age of 62, I am finally learning the superpower of being myself, and with that comes a sense of peace and real freedom. Not having to deal with approval-seeking behavior, all these types of things that keep one small or contracted and keep one from truly thriving. Truly being myself puts me in a position to thrive.
