Queen of the Utes YOU MAY BE WONDERING, WHO IS THAT ON THE COVER? Her name is Chipeta, which means “white singing bird’ in Ute. She is honored on the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame (we highly recommend scrolling through the impressive list) and is an important female figure we had sadly never heard of before.

Chipeta is also known as the “Queen of the Utes,” although she doesn’t fit the typical archetype of a queen. She’s so much more than that.

Chipta was queen of diplomacy, of peace, in a time of rising tensions between settlers and native people. She was the only woman ever allowed to sit on a Ute tribal council.

She even lobbied the US Congress on behalf of her tribe. Chipeta will forever be known as a wise woman, who practiced good judgment and compassion.

This leaves us with the question, what will your story be? The annual “Women

A HOME WITH HISTORY ARTICLE RILEY COWING

AS POPULARITY FOR THE GAME OF GOLF INCREASED, THERE WAS A DEMAND FOR A GOLF COURSE IN BOULDER. So, when the Boulder Country Club officially formed in 1919, they made the site of their clubhouse around Sale Lake, east of 28th Street and north of Kalmia Avenue. Over time, the historic site has served many different functions, from a place for large social gatherings and parties in the 20’s to becoming a private residence in recent years.

The Emerson family lived in the house from 1949 until 1992. Over that time, the home underwent a number of renovations. For instance, the dance hall was transformed into a living room, locker rooms became children’s bedrooms, and an addition was built that included a garage and sick room, to allow for better care whenever a child was ill.

Michelle and Jeff Johnson, current homeowners, have found that although rich in history, the home is adaptable to the needs of their family as their kids grow up and their lives change accordingly.

“The house is really able to respond to our family as we change,” Michelle says.

When the Johnson’s first bought the house in January 2006, they felt the European style decor in place by previous owners stripped CONTINUED >

the space of its original country club heritage and charm. Both Michelle and Jeff wanted to take the home back to its roots. They first took time to live in the house to better understand how their lives aligned with the space. Then eventually, they brought in materials like locally sourced stone and natural slate to enhance some of the original elegance.

Michelle notes that because the home was built with an intention to entertain, they have been able to morph the space to their needs without having to start over completely. It was designed as an open floor plan before that became the trend. She also loves the separation between public and private areas. Since the first floor of the clubhouse was a public space with a dance hall, the family kept spaces for entertaining there with a kitchen, dining room, and fireplace. The bedrooms are downstairs which makes for a cozier, quiet environment.

“It’s such a special place,” Michelle says.

“AT A SCHOOL, YOU MIGHT EMPOWER SEVERAL HUNDRED CHILDREN,” EXPLAINS ANDREA. “BUT WHEN YOU EMPLOY UGANDANS AS THEIR TEACHERS, EACH WITH THEIR OWN FAMILIES AT HOME, YOU IMPACT HUNDREDS MORE.”

As the original three months came and went, Andrea, settled for good in Uganda and met Haril. The two fell in love. It would seem like the perfect happy ending to Musana’s story.

But the leaders at Musana quickly realized that another orphanage was not a solution, but actually a part of the problem.

“We wanted to address the root causes of vulnerability within our community.” Haril says, “A lot of Ugandans suffer from what we call ‘dependency syndrome.'

People feel that they need help from rich foreigners to survive. Orphanages perpetuate this type of thinking.

We want Ugandans to have ownership and vision for their own lives.”

And so the team at Musana began the task of community development, targeting three key areas of vulnerability in Iganga: education, healthcare,

“I thought I would be there for three months,” she smiles. “I honestly had no idea the direction my life was about to take.”

While visiting Iganga, the girls witnessed a nightmare: an abusive orphanage, housing 160 children in just one room.

The Coloradans brought the abuse to the attention of the local government, eventually being granted custody of eighty of the children. Overnight, Musana Children’s Home was born. At the new orphanage, the children received food and healthcare but also genuine interaction and love — many for the first time.

Musana’s innovative and entrepreneurial approach also seeks to empower the vulnerable women of Iganga, who have access to vocational training and business support through their programs.

“We teach them skills like baking, tailoring, and embroidery, but we also expose them to local businesses led by strong women. We want them to see what is possible!” Andrea adds.

And last but not least, Musana recently was able to build a Community Health Center with two main objectives: affordability and compassion. Currently, the hospital treated thousands of patients per month and was able to add an inpatient wing with 70 beds.

If all these projects seem astounding, consider this: Musana’s goal is to be self-sustaining, generating 100% of their operating budget through locally generated funds and enterprises. Currently, they are about 90% of the way there.

Andrea says they are now partnering with other NGOs to teach their holistic approach, last year consulting with no less than 30 organizations.

From their beginnings as a small orphanage helping a handful of children, to a community changer empowering local men and women to “be the change,” one thing seems certain: Musana will never stop growing, adapting, and learning how to best serve their community.

“I think Andrea’s ability to listen has been a gift to Musana,” smiles Haril. “Now we will be able to share all we have learned.”

After working together for over six years at Essentiels Spa in Boulder, the three women decided to pour their passion and expertise into opening their own space, aptly named The Nail Studio. The open, airy salon boasts large front windows that capitalize on the beautiful Boulder sunshine and a modern-contemporary style that lends the space a soothing, comfortable ambiance.

One of The Nail Studio’s prerogatives is to provide their clients with a highly relaxing service, one that utilizes only the highest quality products. With this in mind, the three women chose to open their new studio in Boulder, partly because they’d already established a

The truth is, stylists come with tons of baggage. Literally.

As soon as I graduated dental school, I realized just how much more there is to learn. I’m still continuing that path — I don’t think you ever stop — but along the way, I’ve discovered new areas of interest: one that’s sparked my passion.

We need oxygen, and if we’re deprived of it, our system tries to find a way to accommodate. I’ve seen children dealing with poor sleep, allergies, and in turn, attention deficit, who develop orthodontic problems; I’ve seen adults with sleep apnea, who show signs in the oral cavity. As I began to understand the effect of airway issues on the dentition (really, our entire system), I learned something even bigger.

See, in order to get to this conversation, we have to take our time with patients, and develop the rapport. Life isn’t all that different.

Go chase that muse. She makes her appearance graciously and swiftly, but like any creative knows, you never know when she’ll return. I still wonder if she’ll appear again when I have a momentary creative block, but trust me, it’s a part of the process.

When you catch your breath and have time to sit back and enjoy what you’ve made, you’ll know it was worth the work.

Listen, there will always be someone who doubts you.

I had one mentor tell me early on that what we were attempting was a moon shot. He wasn't condescending when he said it; in fact, it was meant to be helpful. Like, "You know what you're getting into, right? You know how hard this is going to be, right?"

Truthfully, there was no way I could know what we were getting into, or how hard it would be. The only way to learn that was just to start doing. Without a leap of faith, nothing new would ever be accomplished.

The key to overcoming doubt is to hold in your mind a paradox – to tell yourself: I know that the chance of success is very, very small, but I'm not going to worry about that today. I'm going to worry about making the best decisions I can make given what I know to be true today so that my vision can move forward.

And by making a series of good, small decisions, I will continue to increase the chances of success.

Lily Schlosser: Eli & Barry @eliandbarry

EliAndBarry.com Lily Schlosser, the woman behind the high-quality clothing company Eli & Barry, dedicated herself to making well-edited, long-lasting clothes in the spring of 2016.

Schlosser has been enamored with crafting since childhood and has explored many diverse creative mediums.

“One of my earliest birthday memories is of receiving loads of crafting kits from my friends and trying to complete them all that night,” Schlosser remembers.

Schlosser’s mother taught her to knit and sew as a child, a skill that she rediscovered in her twenties and ultimately led to the founding of Eli & Barry.

Schlosser has conscientiously woven her values into the workings of Eli & Barry, many of which run counter to standard practice in the fashion industry (think "fast fashion"). At the heart of her company is a love of fabric and the idea that clothing can be a statement of rebellion. Both environmental and personal sustainability is also central to Eli & Barry.

Schlosser goes to yoga almost every day, a practice she says has dramatically influenced her creative process by bringing calm and confidence.

Another way Schlosser is challenging the norms of the fashion industry is by creating clothes for a wide variety of body types, all of which are downright comfortable to wear.

“I’m very active and like to be able to move comfortably in what I’m wearing, but I also want to look great. I love playing with silhouettes in ways that challenge our concept of beauty!”

Along with the content of her work, the mediums Robinson employs also continue to shift and expand. Though her current body of work began with paper and ink drawings, she has now realized her designs as apparel patches, textile wall hangings, and glassware.

“It won’t stop there,” Robinson says. “I plan to keep the wheel turning and continually add new facets to my work.”

Robinson recently signed up for a ceramics course and is hoping to see her work in 3-D soon.
