DESIGN ENVY IS A BUZZWORD YOU HEAR FROM BLOGGERS, PINTEREST BOARDS AND INSTAGRAM CAPTIONS. It’s usually an image of a beautiful space in a home or a piece of artwork designed with intention. The intention to give onlookers all the feels. Having envy for design isn’t a bad thing. It acts as a muse and inspires the designer in all of us to make a creative space fit for your thumbprint. In this issue, we seek out design envy through the cutest little red lodge, two worldclass athletes home by Melton Design Build and in Jace Will Design’s art studio. We also threw in a history lesson about the iconic Sputnik light and talked with the experts at Studio Thomas about some old trends making a comeback (we dig it). We hope these pages give you design envy and inspire you to tear out a page and start a mood board. Home improvement only takes two ingredients: the

16TH ANNUAL WHITTIER-MAPLETON GARDEN TOUR SET FOR SATURDAY JUNE 2 Downtown Boulder’s Whittier International Elementary School is holding its 16th annual self-guided Garden Tour Saturday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Garden Tour has established itself as Boulder’s premier garden tour, opening up to eight exceptional gardens (many that are tucked away and new to this year’s tour) in the historic Mapleton Hill neighborhood. Attracting more than 700 visitors annually, the Garden Tour is a must-do, interactive event in Boulder as well as Whittier Elementary school’s most successful fundraiser. Last year’s Garden Tour proceeds (a record $42,000) accounted for more than one-third of the Whittier PTA’s budget for the year, and enabled the school to provide essential and enriching programs for its more than 400 impressionable students. “The Whittier-Mapleton Garden Tour is an amazing way to kick off summer and celebrate Colorful Colorado and our beautiful, local gardens,” said Garden Tour Committee leader Julie Grayson. “This tour is a unique opportunity for the public to see some of Boulder’s most inspiring private gardens, while also supporting downtown Boulder’s historic Whittier Elementary School.” Garden Tour guests can indulge in treats from Spruce Confections and Sweet Cow, and delicious food from The French Twist and BVSD’s Munchie Machine in the tented dining area at the “Hive”. Members of the Boulder Garden Club, People and Pollinators Action Network and Colorado Green Builders Guild will also be on-hand at the “Hive” to serve as resources for all garden-lovers. Also, in conjunction with the Whittier-Mapleton Garden Tour is Mapleton Hill’s annual Rummage Sale where peo-

Ask the Experts EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT CONSTRUCTION LENDING WITH FLATIRONS BANK.

DO... PERFORM DUE DILIGENCE: Avoid cutting corners when assessing general contractor options, as contractor/owner disputes can significantly derail projects in time and money.

PREPARE FOR HIGHER RATES & FEES: Construction financing is typically more expensive than a traditional mortgage, so don’t be surprised by higher costs.

According to David Kinney, chief credit officer with Flatirons Bank, what it takes to achieve financial fitness and the habits you adhere to when working to get in better physical shape have more in common than you might expect. “Physical fitness is defined as one’s ability to carry out tasks with-

With a focus on developing personal relationships, Flatirons Bank takes its staff’s extensive banking industry experience and translates it into incomparable service and actionable advisement for clients. When it comes to one of the most crucial services Flatirons Bank provides, construction lending, the team shared with us their expert tips on how to best plan for and execute building your new home while staying as financially conscious, and fit, as possible.

ROAD TRIP

ARIZONA HIT UP ARIZONA’S ‘HOT SPOTS’ (PUN INTENDED).

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DANIELLE WEBSTER TRAVELING THROUGH ARIZONA CAN BE A FUN AND EASY ROAD TRIP, THE HARDEST PART IS DECIDING WHAT TO SEE. Although the state is small, all the hallmarks are pretty far apart...and there are a lot of them. Go bathing in Slide Rock State Park in Sedona, see the epic and grandiose Grand Canyon, learn about hundred cacti in Tucson Saguaro National Park, and even visit a meteor crater! Nature comes in every degree; from the mountainous winter town of Flagstaff to the old and dry formations in Antelope Canyon. We’ve come up with a solid road trip that can include most of Arizona’s ‘hot spots’ (pun intended) that you can hit in a long weekend and still get the most out of the state. We recommend flying into Phoenix and renting a car. If you can’t decide what to do and you don’t have all the time in the world, take our route: Phoenix to Sedona to Tucson: 3 main cities in 4 days, give or take a few attractions if you have time.

But, a year into grad school, I found my first really nice wood shop and never looked back. That was it for me. Years later, I went back to grad

Q: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PROCESS. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR ONE OF YOUR CHAIRS TO BE MADE? A: There’s a lot of molding and tapering that goes into the wood when making chairs such as the Wing Chair. It depends on how complicated the molds and the bends are. The Wing Chair takes about two and a half weeks to put together.  Q: DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT YOU’RE WORKING ON CURRENTLY?  A: We’ve been doing a lot of dining tables and side tables, which is kind of a joke amongst designers because we don’t need another side table design. I’m working on the You Side Table—designed to go with the You Lounge— for a client in Vail. I also love experimenting with new materials. Right now I’m working with Krion. It’s awesome. 58

ARTICLE ANNA SMITH, ANNABODE + CO ILLUSTRATION GREY GRIMM

I KNOW YOU’VE ALL SEEN A SPUTNIK LIGHT, BUT THE HISTORY OF ITS DESIGN IS STILL A LITTLE MURKY.  Although some credit the Italian engineer Gino Sarfatti, it’s  not 100% clear who designed it first as it was copied and reinterpreted many times over in the 1950s and 60s.  But that’s often the case with design history, so we’re going to run with it! The  name “Sputnik” refers to the first-ever  satellite launched in 1957 by the Soviet Union, escalating  Cold War tensions. Sputnik officially launched the Space Race that overtook America, leading to the creation of NASA and culminating in putting a man on the moon.  The Sputnik ceiling light was part of the  design period  known as the Atomic Age. Designs from this period looked increasingly to science for their inspiration, as fear of atomic energy and nuclear disaster gripped the world (the atomic bomb was first tested in 1945). Everything from atoms to molecules to yes, satellites, found their way into people’s  homes–and their screens. Remember  The Jetsons? Same time period, same style. Now let’s take a peek at Gino Sarfatti, shall we? Born in Venice, Sarfatti had a background in aeronautical engineering–not design. His future career happened almost by accident after a friend asked him to create a light out of a glass vase, to which he attached a fixture from a coffee maker. Funny how life works that way, right? He  co-founded the lighting company Artluce in 1939, soon after fleeing to Switzerland to avoid persecution by the fascists (his father was Jewish). And over the next 40 years, he designed more than 700 modern light fixtures. One of Sarfatti’s Sputnik lights, which was designed in the 1930s, sold in 2013 for £15,000 (about $22,000). That’s cra-a-a-a-zy. I think it’s great that the Sputnik is popular again today. I’m guessing its stark, bare-bulb look is also at least partly responsible for the recent surge in DIY light fixtures lately.

BACK STAGE A BEHIND THE SCENES CHAT WITH ARTHUR LEE LAND

Where the Colorado Twang Meets the Funk A BORDER COLLIE NAMED GRIFFIN, SUNKEN LEATHER CHAIRS AND AMBIENT LIGHTING FILL ARTHUR LEE LAND’S ECLECTIC MOUNTAIN TOWNHOME. His hometown gig is a quarter mile down the road at a brewery that fits his trio’s unique style. Arthur, his wife Carol, and bandmates Zach Jackson and Will Trask, bring twang back to life. Q: IN YOUR OWN WORDS, TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BAND. ARTHUR: We’re where the Colorado twang meets the funk. It started out as a way to mentor young, talented musicians to play with my other band project Great American Taxi. When Taxi needed a new drummer, I talked to my friend Will and he was available to do the gig, but Americana jam was new territory for him. From there, Will brought Zach, our bass player and background vocalist, on board and The Arthur Lee Land Trio was born. From there it was a clean segway into opening for the Grateful Dead documentary at Red Rocks and our side project Twang is Dead.  Q: WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR MUSICAL INSPIRATION? ARTHUR: Where don’t we find musical inspiration is probably a better question. It’s an interesting question because life brings so much inspiration, but then in the musical realm once I heard the sound of the Fender Telecaster, that was a pivotal moment — what is that and how do I get it. The unique sound of the Telecaster inspires a lot of my music and brings our music to life.  Q: SO IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT THE TELECASTER IS YOUR FAVORITE INSTRUMENT?  ARTHUR: By far. I want the sound of the Telecaster to be my thumbprint. It’s a specific technique and style. I want people to be like, “Oh hey, that’s Arthur.” Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING? ARTHUR: Five-years-old I was playing drums with chopsticks on pillows while watching TV. I have pictures of me air-drumming as a kid. I started playing guitar when I was 16 and music was always a part of my life — it was something I found myself. I love the feeling of improvising and once I got that feeling with music, I couldn’t let it go.  78

FROM THE STYLIST EMILY CHOI As a stylist, I’m constantly inspired by global influences. I love how the owners of the Little Red Lodge were able to combine textile inspiration from all over the world to create a cozy and eclectic space. Warm red Kilim and Persian rugs ground the space and add warmth and coziness, perfect for a cabin nestled in the woods. The traditional patterns impart a sense of familiarity and a timelessness that are an ideal backdrop to evergreens and a warm fire in the hearth. Indigo dyed throw pillows add a bohemian flair inspired by either African mud cloths or indigo dying techniques from Japan. I’ve seen indigo everywhere lately; I think in a way, the textiles remind us all of our favorite pair of selvage denim and a soft white t-shirt.  I especially enjoy the Mexican inspired upholstered chair they have in the study. Fabricated and dreamed up by Denver designer and fabricators Fin Art Co, it adds eccentricity and charm to the space—simultaneously clashing and complementing—creating something unexpected and charming. Like a newly minted tattoo on the lovely collection that is the Little Red Lodge.  CONTINUED >

FROM THE EDITORS Naturally, we love natural accents. I mean, we do live in Colorado. If you're going to live in a little lodge up in the mountains, then you've got to have a few nods to nature through the design.  What we loved is the all marble bathroom (hello, luxury) and the unique DIY leather drawer handles done by the creative and crafty homeowner. Fin Art Co, an all-time favorite furniture maker amongst restaurants, provided the leather. The leather nobs latch perfectly onto the wooden kitchen shelves also designed by Fin Art Co. (See tasting notes details above.) Now to the bathroom. Not only is there a beautiful open view of trees with solitary peace, but the room is also decked head-to-toe with grayscale marble. If you're afraid to get your feet wet with an all-marble bathroom, maybe cold feet is a concern? Don't worry, a vintage rug does the trick. Overall, this beautiful lodge is a real-life Pinterest board that has us inspired to renovate and refine.

THE SMART HOME WHAT ARE THE NEW TRENDS IN TECHNOLOGY

THE FUTURE OF SMART HOMES WITH AURUM TECHNOLOGY.

Anyone who has watched TV in the past year has seen and heard all about voice control. Although still in its infancy; the future control of your home will all be through voice.   CAN I ADD TECHNOLOGY TO MY EXISTING HOME? WHAT ABOUT MY CURRENT SYSTEMS? Absolutely! Aurum has many retro-friendly solutions. We can design systems using your existing infrastructure and leverage robust wireless technologies to accomplish most things.   Lighting control, automated window coverings, wireless networks and media rooms are common updates to existing homes that don’t require a significant amount of new wiring, yet add value, energy savings and most of all, FUN! SPRING IS COMING. WHAT CAN BE DONE IN OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT? Colorado and outdoor living go hand-in-hand. Enjoying a sunset over the Rockies with a glass of wine while watching the big game or listening to high-quality music are common with our indoor/ outdoor lifestyle. Audio systems that rival the performance of indoor systems, yet resemble land-

Music to Our Ears

ARTICLE MARLEY JERANKO

INTRODUCING THE BLUEBIRD MUSIC FESTIVAL. A FESTIVAL TO BENEFIT AND BUILD THE BLUEBIRD YOUTH ARTS CENTER. FUTURE ARTS FOUNDATION, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT SUPPLIES COLORADO PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH INSTRUMENTS AND ART SUPPLIES, HAS LONG HELD THE DREAM OF OPENING A YOUTH ARTS HOUSE. “We thought that this year would be the perfect time to host a benefit,” says Travis Albright, executive director and CEO, but when the team earned the backing of a full lineup of popular folk musicians, “we knew we had to go for it.”

AS A KID, WE ALWAYS HAD ART AND MUSIC, AND MAYBE WITHOUT THOSE CLASSES I NEVER WOULD HAVE GOTTEN INTO MUSIC. PLAYING MUSIC OR BEING CREATIVE ARTISTICALLY IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, BUT EVERYONE SHOULD BE GIVEN THE CHANCE TO SEE IF THEY ARE. I DON'T KNOW WHERE I'D BE WITHOUT MUSIC, SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HELPING OUT THE ORGANIZATION WHILE PLAYING MUSIC WITH OLD AND NEW FRIENDS. —Adam Aijala, Yonder Mountain String Band  CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT

(CON TI N U ED)

“I've always had a passion for doing something positive for kids,” Albright reflects. “There are so many challenging factors out there influencing our children: parents working long hours, bullying on social media. If we can give them a place go to forget about that stuff and learn to play an instrument, I think it can make a big difference in their development. “Now that I just found out I'm about to be a new father, I'm taking this mission even more to heart. Bluebird Music Festival will provide an entire week of music and merriment with the hopes of raising funds for this vision to come to Boulder County in 2019. The Kickoff Dinner and Concert will take place at Rembrandt Yard Arts Gallery on April 19th, and will feature intimate sets of music from Langhorne Slim and more. The main event is at Macky Auditorium on April 21st. The Colorado Bluebirds, which consist of members from Yonder Mountain String Band, Elephant Revival, and more will headline the early show; while The Tallest Man on Earth will take the spotlight for the late show—his first Boulder show in six years. “I was a bit selfish when booking this festival,” Albright jokes. “These are personally some of my favorite musicians, so all the music will be great.” “I'm performing with a bunch of different folks—people who I've been playing with for almost 20 years, people I have yet to meet, and a handful of folks in between,” says Adam Aijala of Yonder Mountain String Band. “It should be a lot of fun.” There will also be a silent auction at Macky Auditorium during the main event where attendees can purchase signed memorabilia donated to the foundation from Jack Johnson, Phish, Wilco, The Lumineers, Yonder Mountain String Band, Got Mule, The National, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, and more. In anticipation of the event, Albright adds, “I'm looking forward to seeing everyone get together and raise money to do something special for the kids in this community.” Purchase your tickets at ColoradoBluebirdProject.com and stay tuned for announcements on additional events throughout each week.
