Whether it is demands from our career, social groups, hobbies, kids activities, or a combination of all the above, we all are susceptible to being completely sucked dry of our time. This year was a reality check for Kate and I, as we succumbed to the realization that life is never going to slow down. The good news, we’ve found, is that we all have the power to allocate our time, if we truly draw some boundaries. As habitual time management failures, the first thing we did in early 2018 was declare Thursday night as our “Date Night”, and Friday night’s as “Family Fun Night”. Whatever happened on Monday through Wednesday happened, but in the midst of life’s storms, we knew that we always had one night that was blocked for just the two of us, and another night that was always blocked for the family. This was certainly an exercise in self control, as there were many things that we otherwise would have not wanted to miss out on. Setting these boundaries up, and being open about them, has been therapeutic on many different levels. Let’s be real, if your kids are over the age of twelve, hanging with their parents on Friday night may sound more like a punishment than something to look forward to. Whatever it is that you and your spouse, or family enjoys doing together, I would encourage you to take a leap and not let anything stand in the way of making it happen.

We are truly honored to be a part of this community, and wish everyone a happy holiday season, making memories with your loved ones.

New Kid on the Block HOW BOULDER’S OB OFF DUTY COMBINES FUN & FASHION FOR TRENDY TOTS

ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO. 40

Boulder Lifestyle | December 2018

PEPLUM TOPS. Rock and roll denim jackets. Bell-bottom jeans. When it comes to the inspiration behind Jennifer Ward’s OB Off Duty brand of trendy clothes for toddler girls, Jennifer draws from the unique style and personality of her five-year-old muse and daughter, Olivia Belle (OB herself!). As the founder of OB Off Duty, Jennifer curates fashion-forward toddler clothing items that help little girls express themselves and their style, working to empower them to let their unique personalities shine through from the inside out. LISA: HOW DID THE IDEA FOR OB OFF DUTY COME ABOUT? JENNIFER: After having my first child I became obsessed with children’s clothing. I channeled all my love for fashion into dressing my daughter, but shopping for fashionable children’s clothing proved to be difficult. The styles all seemed to be very babyish, cartoonish or covered in characters. My goal was to find looks for her that I would wear but in miniature. LISA: HOW DID YOU MAKE THAT IDEA A REALITY? JENNIFER: It all started with social media. My friends and colleagues would often comment on my daughter’s over-the-top fashion style; then they’d ask me to do personal shopping for them and their kids. Then my life was turned upside down when my husband and I decided to move to Boulder. After commuting from Boulder to New York City for work for a few months, I decided to follow this passion and, as they say, the rest is history.

OB Off Duty is targeted to little girls who want to dress as cool as their moms do. It’s not a brand that’s focused on a specific city. It’s more about a specific attitude.

LISA: WHAT EXPERIENCE DID YOU GAIN IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY WHILE LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY? JENNIFER: I’ve worked in fashion for over 20 years and have focused on many sides of the business. I was heading up PR and social media for H&M for 15 years before pursuing OB Off Duty, so I’m very familiar with the business of curating and creating high-fashion clothing that’s accessible for all. I have a lot of experience building a brand from the bottom up and balancing trendy styles with affordability as well, which has been key in launching OB Off Duty. LISA: I IMAGINE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY AND BOULDER WERE PRETTY STARK! JENNIFER: Yes! I’m a city girl at heart, and there was an obvious difference in style specifically. I found styles in Boulder to be a lot more casual than the stilettos and leather pants of New York City. But when it came to children’s wear, there really wasn’t too much of a difference. There will always be moms and parents who want to play dress up with their children every morning no matter where they live. LISA: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE MISSION OF OB OFF DUTY IS? HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR CLOTHING MAKES THE LITTLE GIRLS WEARING IT FEEL? JENNIFER: Our mission is to have fun with fashion and to allow trendy tots to stand out for the one-of-a-kind girls they are! Our pieces are made to be versatile, mixing up well-loved pieces with contemporary twists. Our little girls shine all on their own, and OB Off Duty simply helps them to express their unique personalities even more and to truly stand out like the strong women they will grow up to be! LISA: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE OB OFF DUTY PIECES? JENNIFER: The website is a curated collection of hand-selected items that reflect my daughter’s style. Our fall collection in particular is full of fashion-forward street style pieces, like leather skorts, bell-bottoms and velvet pleated skirts. Olivia’s street style look usually includes something super feminine mixed with something edgy, so we offer a lot of very fun, feminine tops as a staple. LISA: WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR OB OFF DUTY? JENNIFER: We’re still a relatively new kid on the block, so we look forward to continuing to grow and expanding our sizes and categories beyond toddlers. We’re also discussing adding clothing for little boys to our site to reflect the rock and roll style of Olivia’s little brother, Gabriel Bowie (GB)! OB Off Duty OBOffDuty.com @oboffduty

OPEN HOUSE

A CHANGE OF SCENERY TRANSFORMING HOMES WITH MOSAIC ARCHITECTS AND INTERIORS

ARTICLE BEN WIESE | PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS

Boulder Lifestyle | December 2018

MOSAIC ARCHITECTS AND INTERIORS IS A BOUTIQUE ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM THAT SPECIALIZES IN CREATING AND DESIGNING CUSTOM HOMES AND ESTATES IN A WAY THAT CAPTURES WHAT SOME PEOPLE’S DREAMS ARE MADE OF. Whether it’s re-imagining an entryway, re-orienting the home to face west instead of north or putting windows into walls, the Boulder firm is up to the task. Led by firm partner Jane Snyder, Mosaic worked closely with the Bennett family over the course of 14 months to take their home of 15 years and turn it into exactly what they had always wanted: a comfortable home with a breathtaking view of the Flatirons. While getting the Bennett family to buy into transforming their home in the foothills took time, the real challenge facing partner Snyder and the rest of Mosaic was with the form. The addition to the home would need to face the Flatirons at an angle that meshed well with other parts of the house—the nearby rooms, the direction of the flooring throughout the house. And there was still a question of what to do with a kitchen that was too small and facing away from one of the most breathtaking views in all of Colorado. The Bennetts had already been itching to renovate, and considerable basement flooding forced their hand a bit. Luckily for the Bennetts, the people they entrusted with their home happen to thrive off walking into a place, imagining what it would look like if the walls were torn down, and then building it all back up to be better than ever.

OPEN HOUSE

(CON TI N U ED)

“WE LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS HOUSE. THEY DID SUCH A SUPERB JOB MARRYING SOMETHING THAT WAS BRAND NEW TO SOMETHING THAT ALREADY EXISTED.” —SUE BENNETT

50

Boulder Lifestyle | December 2018

KITCHEN The kitchen was in a different place before Snyder and Mosaic got their hands on it, literally: It was facing the driveway in the front of the house, and it was too cramped. Mosaic relocated the kitchen, installed walnut cabinets and opened it up to be an ideal space for multiple family members to gather in at once. The only issue now is that the dishes get done a bit slower than they used to, but that’s to blame on the new view.

EXTERIOR PATIO The boulders strategically placed throughout the back patio are true to the elements common in the area, but they also help maintain an element of control: Even if outside among the hills, the patio is still very much a part of the property. With neighbors on both sides, the patio is small enough to maintain a good sense of privacy, but it’s large enough to comfortably host gatherings, meals and a few drinks with friends. When evening rolls in and lights inside the house glow, the back patio becomes the best place to view the home's radical and astonishing transformation.

LIVING ROOM Snyder was adamant that the Bennett family didn’t need more square feet, but better square feet. As a result of having so many other windows in other parts of the house to stare through, the living room became more of an intentional seating space. With natural walnut frame furniture, no television and LED lights strung across the top and bottom of the rough sandstone wall, making the rock glow at night. The living room is an intimate room that further highlights the synergy and commonalities between the elements used inside of the house and found outside it. CONTINUED >

OPEN HOUSE

(CON TI N U ED)

LOUNGE The lounge is at the root of the entire remodel, as walls were knocked down in favor of giant windows, a knuckle was added to the foundation of the house to support an angle toward the Flatirons, and a local artisan custom-made fireplace with a rough sandstone base was installed. Which previously did not exist. Instead of a breakfast table, Mosaic went with some soft seating that’s perfect for staring out into the nature surrounding the house. The size of the windows and the way the room angles toward the Flatirons creates the illusion of being out in the midst of whatever weather is rolling in from the mountaintops.

STOCKING STUFFER’S GUIDE with the Manz Family

ARTICLE KATE MANZ | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO.

LET'S FACE IT, THERE IS A LOT THAT CAN BE STRESSFUL ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS. Overscheduled calendars get put to the test over these couple of months. Shopping can defiantly contribute to the chaos. For Andy and I, one of our favorite traditions around the holiday season is to make a date out of our stocking stuffer shopping. We like to shop at as many local shops as possible, in search of the unique treasures our kids will go crazy over. We hit up Japango for some sushi and a great cocktail and then head home to wrap up everything we found. Andy literally wraps up every single item that we put in our children's stockings (mine included), down to a little package of chicklets. It's quite amusing. I look forward to this time every year because we seem to slow down and try to focus on spending time together. Included are some of our favorites. Enjoy and please support our local stores! 60

It’s nearly her 7th year in business, and she’s wrapping up her first year in a new South Boulder location inside the Table Mesa Shopping Center. “We’ve really enjoyed settling into our new space and getting to know the South Boulder community. It’s the highlight of my day when someone notices us for the first time and pops in to check out what we’re doing,” says Hubley, a former Adams 12 third grade and art teacher who holds a Masters of Education in Arts Integration. She also welcomed her first child this year. Tinker today is not the same Tinker it was seven years ago, although the same charm and sweetness of the staff and thoughtfulness behind each project remain constant threads. The business grew when it moved locations and added numerous new ways to engage. One, for example, is the Make & Take Studio, a place where you pick from a menu of open-ended projects. It’s great for a solo project or a way to connect with your child. You can paint your own pottery and then pick it up later after it’s been fired. There’s also sand art, apron or tote bag decorating, DIY stamps, mosaic mirrors and more. And you can make more than one project in one sitting. Then there’s Tinker Time, a children’s art exploration opportunity for all ages. Tables are set up, each with their own theme and materials, and kids can flow from each project in their own time with instructors there to help guide them. Younger ones might gravitate toward Tinker Time Art & Play, which is all about multi-sensory play. In addition to its regular programming, including afterschool classes for kids and teens, there are homeschool options that can couple with homeschool Studio Sessions in the afternoon, after kids break for lunch. “It’s remarkable to witness multiple classes and creative projects happening in the same space—kids working in one studio, teens drawing next door, and adults throwing pots all at the same time. The buzz and energy in the studio is palpable,” says Hubley.

Now you can even take Tinker home with you! pARTy in a Box is a brand new offering which allows you to host your child’s party at home with absolutely everything you need, including a tablecloth, handpainted placemats and instructions on setting up a welcoming space and how to facilitate the project. Or if you’d rather sit back and relax, you can book Tinker Mobile to run the whole show for you. The adults can join in on the action during evening pottery, acrylic or oil painting, and life drawing classes, which run in 9-week sessions. Then there’s Friday Art Nights, for those one-off BYOB dates or girls’ nights, where you paint a canvas; it's a mini art history lesson with a painting workshop in an intimate setting. Another addition to the South Boulder location is the retail space; you can build your own art kit, purchase a variety of handmade toys or jewelry and pottery from local artists. Or if gifting an experience is more up your alley, gift certificates for all programming are available as well. This homemade Boulder-based business is cultivating community and art education while supporting a need to help artists, both budding and adult, thrive. Hubley says, “Seeing students run into their studio, greet their teacher, dive into art materials, and clearly feel comfortable and at home is incredibly rewarding. They make the space their own, and that's what makes Tinker what it is.” 90

POM-POMS

with Poppy & Co.

RENOVATE & REFINE

102 Boulder Lifestyle | December 2018

HI! My name is Kelsey, and I am the face behind Poppy & Co. A wedding and family lifestyle photographer and frequent contributor over here at Boulder Lifestyle and Cherry Creek Lifestyle. My photos are accented with lots of excitement, laughs and most importantly, color! I most likely will not show up wearing black to your wedding or photo shoot, but probably will be wearing a pom-pom or two. Especially my pom-pom earrings made by yours truly! Here's how to use these playful little puffs to add some excitement to your holiday season, decor and dress!

Pom-Poms 1. Collect your materials: All you will need is yarn and scissors! Additionally, I used baker’s twine for the gift wrap and the earrings. You will also need super glue or a hot glue gun, pliers, fish hook earring pieces and eye pins. 2. To begin making your pom-poms, start by wrapping the yarn. For bigger pom-poms, like for the garland, you will wrap around your knuckles, and for smaller pom-poms used for the earrings, you will wrap around two fingers. So when you choose your desired size, start wrapping! And keep wrapping! 3. When you are finished wrapping the yarn, pull the yarn gently off of your hand and tie another piece of yarn as tight as the string will go around the middle of the yarn ball. 4. Now, take the scissors and cut each of the yarn loops. 5. When you have all of the loops cut, trim down your pom-pom to your desired length.

Garland The garland is the simplest to make from beginning to end and adds a festive touch to your holiday decor.

Pom-Poms | Step 2

Pom-Poms | Step 3

Pom-Poms | Step 4

Pom-Poms | Step 5

1. Measure out how long you would like your garland and cut an extra piece of yarn to that length. 2. Take each pom-pom and string the long piece of yarn through the center of the pom-pom or through the remaining loop keeping the pom-pom together. You will need about 15-20, but really it just depends on how long you want your garland. 3. String all the pom-poms onto the long string of yarn until your garland is complete! Find the perfect spot, hang and enjoy!

Gift Bows

Another simple pom-pom idea is to make gift decorations for your presents this year! 1. Make however many pom-poms you see fit (I used six varying sizes and colors). 2. Measure out the size of baker’s twine or another piece of yarn to the length needed to wrap around your gift. 3. String the pom-poms onto the twine or yarn, just like you did for the garland. 4. Tie the twine in a knot securing the pom-poms together on the string. This also allows you to play with how the collection of pom-poms sits together. 5. Wrap the twine and pom-poms around the gift to add a little something extra to your gift giving this season!

Pom-Pom Earrings A Poppy & Co. signature is definitely the pompom statement earrings! 1. Once you have your smaller pom-poms ready, let's make some earrings! 2. Use your pliers to connect the fish hook earring piece to the eye pin. 3. Now use either super glue or a hot glue gun to attach the pom-pom to the other end of the eye pin. Put a small dot of glue, about the size of the head of a sewing pin, and stick the pin into the center of the pom-pom.

If you're not the DIYer, no worries. Garlands and earrings are all available to purchase on, PoppyAndCo.Photography. 104 Boulder Lifestyle | December 2018

PARTING THOUGHTS

C O N T R IB U T O R S ILLUSTRATIONS ERIN HOLBERG

TO REFLECT ON A NEW YEAR, WE ASKED OUR TEAM WHAT THEIR FOCUS WORD WILL BE FOR 2019. LADD FORDE Photographer

PROGRESS

My focus word for 2019 is progress. To not only progress in everyday life but also progress with my photography and business. I'd like to challenge myself by continuing to create better images and grow to work with new people under new realms.

BEN WIESE Writer

ENDURE

Enduring can be difficult. It is occasionally all that can be done to get from one moment in life to the next. Life has little pity, even if you and I think it should have more. But don’t let the world, or anything, or anyone rob you of your ability to endure. Remember, if feeling gobsmacked by life, it’s because you have already endured many things in life and still found a way to exist.

COMPASSION

CARRIE DAVIDSON Writer

EMPATHY

I think everyone could—and should— work on being a little more empathetic this upcoming year, especially in our country.

118 Boulder Lifestyle | December 2018

Compassion has become the lost word of past generations and administrations. We have traded this fellow-feeling, empathy for thy neighbor and thyself, for the placeholders of hate, fear and the newly adopted rhetoric that all men are not created equal. Compassion is my mantra moving forward; for myself, my work, my fellow man, near and far, and for the hopeful glimpse that what is yet to come far outweighs what we have not yet shed from our collective past and present—strength in warmth, mercy and tenderness.

CHANTEL ELLERINGTON Director of Client Relations at Boulder Lifestyle & Cherry Creek Lifestyle

GRACE

Grace rises above a situation, pride, a misunderstanding, our feelings, or a situation that had a different ending then we would have preferred. I choose grace for 2019 because the Lord has shown me countlessly, that with grace, I am made whole, I can forgive immediately, I can see more clearly, and accept, that every person, every circumstance, has a purpose in my story.
