e’re in the heart of the dog days of summer. A time of year marked by inactivity and lethargy. It seems like life has taken a pause (or should I say, ahem, Paws.) This month’s theme is an ode to idleness. August is the final month we can embrace the summer vibe of rest and relaxation before vacation time is over. So, obviously, that means spending quality time with your pup and enjoying a brewski. (Hence the theme for this issue.) This month, we featured dog-friendly breweries and met the four-legged best friends of local brewmasters with their all-time favorite beer picks. It’s the perfect time to kick up one’s heels and enjoy a cold one. Especially with man’s best friend. Or ditch the book club and host a ladies beer night that is the ultimate girls’ night in. We also ventured to Vail and ditched the hiking boots and oversized backpack to experience the glory that is glamping. Or, if you aren’t feeling as adventurous, just stick around town where we rounded up the top three staycation destinations. The saying, ‘hair of the dog’ seems fitting enough for this letter. Because if you’re going to be jumping around sampling beers with your best friend, don’t forget to find your hangover cure.

legged and two-legged. Even so, their needs aren’t all that different. “We always talk about how these dogs are children,” says Brook Brown, VP of

Operations and Innovation. “I have a fouryear-old, two-legged child and I want her to be in the best place she can be. “You work hard and invest time into finding that place, so when she is there, and her teachers at school give her extra attention and notice that it’s her birthday or that she has a new dress on, that’s special.

“That translates to what we do here.”

It’s a feeling every parent can relate to. To have such attention to detail when you’re handing your child off to someone, it’s impressive. Brown adds, “Our Camp Counselors know every dog that comes in here by who their friends are, who their friends are not, who their favorite (counselors) are and what their routine is. They notice when a dog’s collar changes!” Of course, the love for dogs is one thing. Managing them is another. CBW’s mission is to create a safe environment for “dogs to be dogs.” Their intricate system, designed with the psyche of dogs in mind, helps them do just that. 46

CBW has 14 free-roaming play yards, separated by size and activity level—all of which are equipped with “Camper Cams” which allows parents to check in on their fur babies via CBW’s ridiculously addicting app. According to Brown, it allows them to create little ecosystems within each yard so that the dogs are separated by size for safety and their personalities for enjoyment. CBW also offers boarding—but before you go thinking you’re sending your pup off to be locked up in a cold, metal crate, know that CBW “campers” enjoy the good life even at rest in luxury suites, cabins and condos. Not only are they spacious enough for dogs to move around and have their own toys, bedding or a t-shirt from home, some include canine grass, memory-foam beds and open tops so that they can stay connected to the rest of the pack. Like any good hotel, campers receive the canine version of a mint on their pillow—a peanut butter-filled bone at lights-out. That is, of course, if mom and dad say it’s ok. Taking it a step further, CBW’s list of services include grooming and training, as well. A: Oskar Blues started as a restaurant in Lyons, Colorado in 1997 and it began brewing in 1999. Since then it has been a wild ride, especially after we were the first brewery to put our Dales Pale Ale in a can back in 2002. Today Oskar Blues is brewing at four facilities, including the original brewpub plus production facilities in Longmont and Brevard, North Carolina, and Austin, Texas. Q: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PUP.

A: Oscar, (not named after the brewery, just an odd coincidence in names), is an Australian Shepard/Swiss Mountain Dog mix and is about twelve-years-old. My wife adopted him just over ten years ago down in Colorado Springs. He loves water, but not so much swimming, and keeping tabs on the toddler. He is a mama’s boy, and his main mission in life is to stay right next to my wife at all times possible. Q: SO THE BAR OR PUB YOU'RE AT DOESN'T SERVE BEER, (SHAME ON THEM), WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER?

A: A sherried Scotch like Glendronach or an aromatic white wine like a Moscato, Riesling, or Gewurztraminer. Q: TO ANYONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE BEER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

A: It has a broader range of style than they think. To give “beer” a fair shot, one should definitely try something from multiple categories. Q: WHAT KIND OF BEER WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

A: I love history, especially Russian history, and I also love malt so I would say, Imperial Stout.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR BEER MAKING PROCESS?

A: 12Degree is a small, artisanal Belgian-inspired brewpub. Each process depends on the beer but what is consistent with us is that the brewing process is very hands on. Our brewery has zero automation, so we’re very in touch with how each batch is doing at every stage. We’re also in a small space, and the brewery is on two floors, so we’ve had to be creative with our processes. We brew and ferment upstairs and condition, age, and serve the beer from the lower level. Q: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BEST FRIEND.

A: Well, I feel like I should mention two pups. Walter was a big, mellow goofball of a Golden Retriever. He was with me for nine years and was my brewing companion when I home-brewed our pilot batches. After we had opened, he was 12Degree’s official greeter and mascot for over three years. Walter passed away late last summer at nearly thirteen but left an indelible paw print on 12Degree and of course on me. I just recently got a new pup named Max. He doesn’t know too much about brewing or being a greeter yet, but we’re working on it. Q: IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE BEER TO DRINK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A: That’s a tough question, but for one of ours, I’d go with Treachery, our Golden Strong Ale. For one we don’t brew I think I’d have to go with Orval which is a Belgian Trappist Ale that’s so unique it’s practically in it’s own category. Q: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME 12DEGREE?

A: 12Degree is a bit of a beer-geeky name. A: I was TIME's 2006 Person of the Year, I'm a Sagittarius, but I don't believe in astrology and I generally like punk and rock and also not-so-secretly like Taylor Swift. Q: HOW DID RATIO BEERWORKS BECOME THE NAME?

A: I was reading a cool article about the newest movement in the coffee industry, which I also love. It was an entire article about the ratio of coffee to the water for different brews. It really struck that we have so many different important ratios in beer brewing too, like our ratio of water to grain is usually 2.61:1. I also loved the image of the ratio of all the connecting parts of the community that come together to create our brewery. Q: TELL ME ABOUT MR. LEVI HONKY TONK.

A: He's a two-year-old Miniature Schnauzer. He is unusually colored as chocolate parti. His favorite activities are: pooping in our bedroom, wrestling, licking, licking, licking and cuddling. Main quirk: spinning in circles. I would say his personality is categorized as "spunky turd." Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEER TO BREW AND WHY?

A: I love brewing our huge Imperial Stout called Genius Wizard. It's such a massive beer that takes two full mashes of grain just to fill up the kettle once. It's filled with tons of chocolaty and caramel malts as well as molasses. We only brew this at one time of the year to come out in December. If we had to brew it year round, it would probably be my least favorite to brew as it's actually the biggest pain in the ass! Q: WHAT DO YOU AND LEVI HONKY TONK USUALLY DO ON THE WEEKENDS?

A: Schnauzers are supposed to be great rat and mouse hunters, but Levi will literally just stare at mice, so we've taken that job off of his list. Levi is quite a great hiker. He has hiked Mt. Sanitas in Boulder, and we just did the approach hike on Mt. Bierstadt. I think he'll make his first 14er peak this summer.

ing technology stifles all stillness. So I wait anxiously at my desk with the same excitement as visiting an old friend. I sleepily take to the road at 5 o’clock sharp with no other agenda but to head west. I watch dust collect on my feet as I stomp through trails of rusted earth to get where my imagination can run wild again. I’ve crowned myself a Weekend Warrior. The idea of “glamping” never quite lit the same fire under my feet. I have no desire to ride into the wilderness on an enormous RV with five flat-screen TVs; I look absolutely ridiculous in a flower crown; I can’t play the banjo, let alone whistle any resemblance of a musical tune; and frankly, the closeness of campers has always turned me off. All I’ve ever wanted is the freedom of the open air—could expanding my camp amenities really heighten my experience of the outdoors?

When I arrived at Collective Retreats in the thick of Vail's rustic ranchlands, a sphere of gray gloom hovered over our canvas tent. Smoke from the barbecue blended into the heavy atmosphere and raindrops began to fall over my plate. Panic spread across my cheeks as I watched the most stunning meal I’ve ever had prepared for me soak up the moisture—knowing this could all be ruined if I don’t act quick, I started to wonder if luxury and nature could coexist cooperatively. I immediately ran inside, noticing the mahogany leather chairs, the ornate chandelier of antler sheds and pure white down comforter. It was all calling my name! Just then, a roll of thunder echoed against the knotted floorboards, and my frenzy followed. Underneath a rich oak dresser stocked with fresh fluffy towels, first aid supplies, and homemade snacks and sparkling water, I found exactly what I needed to shield my trout from the weather: the umbrellas. In fact, it was all there—everything I could possibly need for my stay. A heavy exhale left me. I jumped through the field of sage and tall grass spikelets where our dinner table was nestled against the pasture, relieved to have made it in time to protect these gourmet gifts. Bellies full and hearts happy, we watched the skies part to unveil its greatest wonder. I’ve called Colorado home for as long as I’ve been alive, yet seeing the alpenglow off the New York Range was like seeing mountains for the first time. At night, the cool high desert wind seeping through the mesh doors calmed me into a deep sleep under an even deeper bundle of heated blankets. At daybreak, a howling voice flew by on an ATV and into the hills. With enough time for me to resurrect myself from my cocoon, pour steaming water into the French press and look up from my concoction, I watched a band of nearly fifty horses sprint past the campsite into the corral down the road. I’ve collected many memories sipping my morning Joe in solitude next to the sound of a clear alpine lake. I’ve even greeted the sun with my toes in the mud as I crawled out of my tent. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’ve never felt the footprints of an unwaveringly powerful creature through the ceramic of my mug. I might never again. And this time, I shared with complete strangers neighboring me. Somehow, it was more profound that way. It’s true. I’ve always been a diehard proponent for earning your outdoors. There’s something about melting into the dirt like an ember in your fire after a long day fighting to get there. But in all honesty, sometimes it just feels good to be taken care of…It feels good to know that everything is taken care of. Collective Retreats did just that. The time I spent there allowed me to experience nature in a way I haven’t been able to since I was a child. I wasn’t thinking about whether or not I forgot something; I wasn’t putting my brain into overdrive, planning my every move. I was just living in it. Wholly. Maybe that’s the art of glamping.

“We’re an analog family,” del Gaudio explains. “We don’t like a lot of technology in the house. I think of books as art, but they are also heavily used.”

Since she was designing her own home, she had the unique opportunity to be her own client. “[I was able to incorporate] all of the things I really believe in personally, like simplicity, low maintenance and [solar power].” del Gaudio says. “I could develop all the ideas I feel strongly about. When you work for someone else, you have to balance what you feel strongly about with what the client feels strongly about. This was one in the same and a special opportunity.” Creating a space that reflects the family she is designing for is a priority in her work. She likes to develop an intimate relationship with the family so she can better understand how they live. She feels she has done her job if the house is personal to that family and an expression of their values. For del Gaudio’s family, they value spending time together in shared spaces versus everyone having their own, individual larger spaces. To accommodate this, she created a wide, open floor plan for the living room, kitchen and dining room so they can spend a majority of their time together in these areas of the house. The bedrooms she kept modest, explaining they’re really just for sleeping and not a central part of the design. Another favorite aspect of her home’s design is the book wall located in the main living space. It spans floor to ceiling and is filled with books for the entire family to utilize. “We’re an analog family,” del Gaudio explains. “We don’t like a lot of technology in the house. I think of books as art, but they are also heavily used.” In designing her home and for her work in general, it is important to del Gaudio to create a space that feels like a seamless piece of their surroundings. “I try to approach every project without thinking about what it will look like, and I think about what it will mean,” del Gaudio explains. “By tying [the project] to a place, the climate, culture or the landscape it will feel inevitable that this piece of architecture was here. It feels connected and has a soul. It should feel like it belongs.”
