The Creative Culture G

rowing up in my home was like an artist’s jungle gym. My parents and two older sisters (I’ll never let them forget that) are all artists, each with their own medium of choice. My dad the Renaissance man, has always enjoyed woodworking, photography and even had a violin making phase; my mom would make felt bags, commissioned paintings and now focuses on her leather making; my sister Caitlin is a talented musician and my other sister Lauren does poetry and drawing. The house was always buzzing with creativity; tools of the trade (whatever it may be) always on hand, and the opportunity to hone your craft was always an option. Honestly, I’ll admit this is something I regret not taking advantage of more.

From being constantly surrounded by arts and crafts, I learned from a very young age that not everything had to be bought from a store. In fact, it’s always more special when you support local artists. My mom, a now tenured Boise Saturday Market attendee, would have us hop around from booth to booth, and each weekend I was exposed to amazingly talented people. To this day my mom has a booth at the market and when I go back to my hometown of Boise, Idaho I hang out with fellow market people down at her booth.

While working on the Arts & Culture issue, it was exciting to meet so many different artists in Boulder and Denver. Each city is an imaginative hub where self-expression is encouraged through any outlet, and as I learned with my interactions this issue, it’s never too late to embrace your artistic side. It’s safe to say that just about every feature is about an artist in some sense of the word, because art is in everything. We hope you enjoying reading this issue as much as we enjoyed making it. To all of the makers and shakers out there – this one’s for you.

RESOURCE SETS RECORD FOR REDUCING BUILDING MATERIALS WASTE ReSource, the building materials donation and reuse facility in east Boulder, set a record in 2015 for the greatest amount of materials diverted from landfills in a single year. More than 3.8 million pounds of cabinets, doors, windows, appliances, lumber and other materials were reused by local residents and businesses, representing the greatest diversion in ReSource’s twenty-year history. This is an increase of more than 350,000 pounds from 2014, and nearly double the annual amount of materials diverted from landfills from just six years ago. “Saving money at ReSource used to be one of the best kept secrets in Boulder,” says Neal Lurie, president of the Center for ReSource Conservation, the nonprofit organization that manages ReSource. “With prices 75 percent lower than typical retail rates, clearly the community has embraced this model of reducing waste. It’s an easy way to make home improvement projects more affordable, even for families on a tight budget.” One of the fasting growing sources of donated materials is deconstruction services – disassembling homes rather than demolishing them so the materials can be used again. Contractors renovating kitchens, bathrooms or other areas of a home, used to pay to dispose of the original cabinets, sinks or counters. Today, these donations to ReSource are free and tax deductible. The City of Boulder sponsors the ReSource facility to support Boulder’s community zero waste goals. ConservationCenter.org 26

Hats are rooted in classic men's dress wear with a modern spin. The styles are classically oriented shapes like the fedora, homburg or the derby. Always a hat person and a maker, it was just a matter of time until Leuenberger put the ideas together. The initial moment was when she stopped a woman on the street with a “super dope” hat on and asked her where she got it. Her response was, "I made it myself!" And that was that. rafting one-of-a-kind, custom cabinetry takes more than talent; it takes skill, precision and patience. These abilities don’t develop overnight. Rather, they take years upon years of projects and hard work. This is one of the many reasons why The Artisan Shop is one of the premier, award-winning custom cabinet companies in the Rocky Mountain region. Since every client desires a different design and personal aesthetic, no two kitchens are identical. Take a look at the two, drastically-different-yet-equally-stunning kitchens the company has recently designed. Most homes fall somewhere in-between these two varieties with a transitional style incorporating concepts from both traditional and modern.

Elegant Colorado Rustic ELEGANT COLORADO RUSTIC

This kitchen cabinetry is crafted with rustic black walnut with a glazed finish. Light, stone countertops top off the look. An aspen white-painted island offsets the dark wood and includes a distressed, hand sand-thru finish. In short, it is painted and then sanded and distressed to blend in with the rest of the home and gives it an older, warmer feel. The homeowners worked closely with The Artisan Shop designers for over a year—for not only their kitchen, but their entire house—to blend so many wood species and finishes to maintain the intended overall design theme. Throughout all rooms, a total of eight different wood species and 10 different finishes were used. The combination of great design and Artisan quality created an impressive, award-winning home.

Modern Masterpiece MODERN MASTERPIECE

A polar opposite of the Colorado Rustic kitchen, this sleek kitchen uses a combination of acrylic and modern technology. White Reflekt acrylic with red ascents adds interest, while the backlight backsplash with interwoven bamboo is both functional and artistic. Cut-outs create unique design elements along with big, stainless steel bar pulls. The designers wanted clean, simple lines with pops of color, which result in a space that shows beautifully, day or night. (Extra wow factor: The whole kitchen lights up via remote control.) The Artisan Shop used hidden design elements that aren’t apparent at first glance. Servo-drive hinges open and close the cabinets with only a slight touch of the hand, a style popular in both Boulder and Denver where the modern movement continues to grow. This type of contrast, designing cabinetry in drastically different styles, goes through The Artisan Shop’s production facility daily. A Colorado-proud company with nearly 40 employees between its Loveland showroom and factory and Boulder’s showroom, it has the ability to take customer’s dreams and build tangible, touchable, gorgeous cabinetry to set them apart from others. 36

Determined to restore his grandparents’ vast stolen art collection and their legacy, Goodman discovered that much of their collection (including works by Degas, Renoir, Botticelli, Guardi) had gone to Hitler and Hermann Goering. hinese takeout doesn’t always have to be eaten in front of the television. Spice up your February with a Chinese New Year

dinner party to honor friends, family and ancient culinary tradition. Whether you make shrimp chow mein from scratch or order takeout online, we won’t judge. Just grab your chopsticks, oolong tea and invite your friends over to celebrate on February 8. Traditionally, people in China can take months to prepare for this important occasion and celebrate for up to two weeks straight. Luckily, we were able to throw together our dinner celebration in just one night thanks to takeout from Zoe Ma Ma, a hip restaurant serving authentic Chinese street food.

THE YEAR OF THE MONKEY (CON TI N U ED)

To begin, set the table with classic Chinese colors: Red to symbolize the Chinese national color, yellow to symbolize royalty and green for money. Then fill your table with Chinese symbolism: Dragons are historically associated with emperors and are seen as a sign of strength. Red envelopes filled with money are traditionally given to single people by married couples during special family events and holidays—like the New Year celebration. Finally, spread good luck and wealth by displaying oranges or tangerines. If you want to wish longevity on your houseguests, it’s best to find oranges with stems and leaves attached. Lizzy Wolff, writer/baker of Sugar + Butter blog (SugarPlusButter.com), decorated handwritten fortune cookie cupcakes for dessert. While fortune cookies are readily available with Chinese meals in America, you won’t be finishing your meal—or finding good fortune—with these in China. But hey, a little optimism, sweet treats and lucky numbers never hurt, right?

ALEXA ALLEN (NELLAkids)

AlexaAllenIs.com Artist, designer and maker Alexa Allen divides her time between her own small leather and wood objects designs and doing leatherwork for Todd Reed's (world-renowned jeweler and superstar) line of men's jewelry. Allen moved back to her hometown of Boulder after originally completing prototypes for a line of eco-modern children's furniture. While her love for furniture and woodworking has always remained, she was interested in branching out and found a leather class by a talented local leather artisan. The combination of wood and leather goods was a natural fit. Inspiration comes to her from an understanding and intimacy of the material (often leather itself)—what it smells like, how it will be used, how it feels in your hands, how it will cut or how it will wear and age over time.

“I aspire to create objects that are useful, functional and beautiful in everyday life,” Allen says. 56

Both with Boulder roots, the Frischkorns opened the first location of Cured on the East End of Pearl Street in August of 2011 after realizing there was no cheese niche in the area and seeing an opportunity to let the community in on the foods and tastes that they themselves love. Cured has grown to be a shop stocked full of wines, meats, unique gourmet groceries, charcuterie, and, naturally, ample amounts of cheese, has garnered a following amongst the local Boulderites of the East End. With a goal of continuing to help Boulder explore the tastes that excite them, the Frischkorns opened a second Cured location on Pearl Street’s West End on 10th street, just about eight blocks away from the original location in late 2015. Poss Lambert, co-owner of Cedar & Hyde, a store selling a variety of high quality and ethically made items which Cured West is adjoined to, says, “Inviting Cured to be a part of the mercantile was an easy choice based on their focus on quality, attention to detail, and impeccable aesthetic.” Cured also shares the space with Fawns Leap, a boutique floral shop.

In both their East and West End locations, Cured hopes to foster the local business feel just off the beaten path of Pearl Street Mall. From the meat counter feel of the East End shop to the boutique atmosphere of the new West End location, Cured offers high quality and delicious sandwiches, soups, cheeses, baguettes and more, for locals to savor for lunch during the day or to pick up for dinner on their way home from work in the evening. The West End shop also showcases shelves of unique spreads, chocolates, home CONTINUED > goods and more for your perusing pleasure. February 2016 | Boulder Lifestyle

n floral design, there are so many ways one might present colorful flowers. One of the most standard

displays is when flowers are en masse with bountiful blooms spilling from a large, beautiful container. Although when budget or the occasion calls for something a bit simpler, here at Fawns Leap we love to create what florists call a table collection, which is a careful combination of elegant vessels that are designed to showcase individual blooms. These petite bud vases can be artfully arranged to create an elegant table centerpiece showcasing flowers. Sometimes less means more. Â

70

Boulder Lifestyle | February 2016

A FEW TIPS

When selecting blooms for a bud vase collection, it’s helpful to look for colors and textures that work well together. Varying the tones within one-color palette and pairing with greenery is always a good start. Blooms with an interesting shape to the stem like clematis, ranunculus and chocolate cosmos are also a good choice. You can get creative and incorporate objects like driftwood, stones, figurines, candle holders or other decorations that you already have around the house. Incorporating plants into these bud vase collections adds to the visual interest, but these vases last long after the blooms have faded. Bud vases only call for a few stems, so you can treat yourself to fresh, unique flowers without having to purchase large bunches.

hoosing the perfect restaurant for Valentine’s Day can be stressful. You don’t want to take a chance on an untested new eatery, old standbys don’t seem special enough and anything too out there could throw your stomach for a loop – not so sexy. You’re looking for something classic yet stimulating, comfortable yet upscale. You’re looking for the Greenbriar Inn. With its 20 acres of scenic, sprawling grounds and location just up the road from Boulder, Greenbriar is a destination restaurant. If you arrive before sunset, the grounds – complete with ponds, gardens and even a waterfall – are worth exploring. But even if Mother Nature isn’t cooperating, the restaurant itself is impressive. The large, wood-paneled dining room epitomizes sophistication, and the servers that move through the room are clad in vests and ties. Although the main room is incredibly spacious (as well as the attached, closed-in patio), it still feels cozy. In Boulder we’re so accustomed to going anywhere in jeans and sandals, but this is a great opportunity to dress up. Or not. It’s that kind of comfortable. CONTINUED >

Having won the Wine Spectator award of excellence for the last 18 years, you’re bound to find something you like on the novella-sized wine list. Or, try something a little spicier in the form of the mango habanero margarita ($12), a strong, tart concoction of infused tequila, house-made triple sec and lime juice with an ancho chili and salt rim. The menu is filled with polished, meat-centric dishes. Appetizers include special occasion favorites like escargot en croûte ($12), a trio of pâté ($14) and steak tartare for two ($19), prepared tableside. Or, go for that ultimate aphrodisiac – oysters ($4 each). On the lighter side, the goat cheese and three beet salad ($10) is a fresh blend of spinach and arugula topped with a champagne vinaigrette. Entrees are predominantly based around high-quality meats, with roasted duck breast ($29), beef wellington ($40) and sous-vide salmon Oscar ($28) making appearances. The roasted Colorado rack of lamb ($38) was a standout, probably because the lamb comes from a farm just five miles down the road. Hearty and savory, you’ll want to scoop up as much of the accompanying jus as possible.

76

Boulder Lifestyle | February 2016

Another favorite is the seared diver sea scallops ($36). Three luscious scallops sit atop horseradish whipped potatoes, while citrus and capers add tartness and keep the dish from becoming too heavy. With eight options, dessert isn’t an oversight. The choices change regularly, but the molten lava chocolate cake with hazelnut ice cream, cranberries, persimmon and port chutney is perfect for chocoholics. While dinner is a romantic experience, the Greenbriar also offers a perfect morning after Sunday brunch, with a buffet of oysters, made-to-order omelets, carving stations and more. Skip the stress this year and live up to even the highest expectations with a night full of old-school glamour and elegance. What’s sexier than that?

ucked away up in North Boulder lies a small winery making a big impact in the beverage market. What We Love The Winery is “Colorado’s Craft Winery,” not only producing fine wines, but pioneering an innovative flagship line of wine based originals called the Decadent Saints.

The scientist behind the wines—quite literally—is owner and degreed enologist Michael Hasler. With over three decades of experience, he’s worked in various parts of the world, including California, Australia, France and New Zealand, and produced gold and trophy winning wines throughout. Previously, Hasler was owner, designer and builder of Wanaka Lake House, a super-luxury accommodation on the shores of Lake Wanaka in New Zealand. He co-owns What We Love The Winery with his wife, Carolee Corey, who assists with all the organizational and vision concepts. The Winery rotates through a range of elegant and complex varietal wines. The 2013 Chardonnay, for example, is fermented and aged in a blend of French and American oak for seven months. While the Petite Sirah is a rich, full-bodied red with dense aromatics of plum spices and brambles, and the 2013 Orange Muscat exhibits citrus blossom, ylang ylang and frankincense. Most excitingly, the company is also carving out its own space inside the wine industry with something absolutely new—the Decadent Saints, award-winning craft concentrates made to be diluted from a wine base with real fruit, fresh herbs and spices. The catapult and inspiration behind opening What We Love is an original 20.5 percent ABV liqueur called Decadent Saint Rocky Mountain Rescue. A delicious eclectic liqueur involving dark chocolate, decaf coffee, berries and spices to create a luxurious, truly rich flavor. Designed to be diluted and served hot as a CONTINUED >

mulled wine or served straight as a Black or White Russian (with cream); keep in the freezer as impeccable ice-cream topping or use as a steak glaze! What We Love’s sangria concentrates are unlike any other. The award-winning Decadent Saint White Sangria and Decadent Saint Fire or Ice Sangria are crafted with a red or white wine base, real fruit and spices. “If you go to a liquor store, you’re going to be hard pressed to find anything with real fruit in it. It’s all made with flavorings,” Hasler says. And because they are 20.5 percent alcohol, they stay fresh for four to six months after opening without refrigeration. Preserved by the high alcohol and vitamin C content from fruit juices, these products are crafted without any artificial or “natural” flavorings. One bottle of either sangria diluted with seltzer, water or champagne produces three to four bottles. Decadent Saint Fire or Ice Sangria can also be served as a hot, spiced drink during the winter season. According to their research, no other producer is creating unfiltered sangria made with only real fruit. Side note: Due to the high vitamin C content and antioxidants, the sangria claims to lessen the risk of a hangover. “There really isn’t anything else like it in the marketplace right now,” Hasler says. What We Love’s motto of "love and innovation" that carries through to the wines will continue on with two new products slated for release later this year as the company goes national. The tasting room is open to the public Thursdays – Sundays (1 p.m. - 6 p.m.) at The Winery and bottles are available at most major liquor stores in Boulder and Denver. In fact, if you can’t find it your favorite store, let the manager and The Winery know. If they get the liquor store or restaurant to carry it, The Winery will send you three free bottles. Holland is inspirational in so many ways. She is a true artist in every way, a painter and illustrator, but what captured our eye was her botanical art that she captures at the peek of each bloom she works with. "Working with the ephemeral medium of living flowers as paintings is a meditative practice analogous to Buddhist sand paintings.

WORTHY OF THE FOLLOW: Jarrod's post are notting short of authentic. Each picture shows who he is in such a humble way. We love how his creatively shows his personally through photography and his love for woodworking.

I try to capture their fleeting beauty at the height of their bloom with photography. I work in oil, collage and wood assemblage as well."

"I'm perpetually inspired by the wilderness, attempting to capture the serenity in nature. My work has evolved from two dimensions to creating more sculptural works with natural materials."

It would be a dream to attend one of her textile/design tours she leads in India and Japan. She will be taking a group of Colorado women to India this February and March. "I'm fascinated by material culture. I am inspired by travel and I love exploring traditional crafts in places that I visit. In the American southwest, for instance, I'm intrigued by the Navajo and Rio Grande weaving traditions. In Japan, I've enjoyed learning about shibori and katazome dyeing."

"I'm excited by designers who create innovative, contemporary products in collaboration with traditional artisans and with respect to old techniques and traditions. I love connecting people to these designers."
