Giving Back

F

inally the end of 2016 has wrapped up and we’re moving forward into another year. I always look forward to this season. It seems like days that have been moving so fast for months finally slow down as busy work schedules have subsided to family gatherings and holiday festivity. We come together to celebrate the year that has been, and prepare for all of the new opportunities the next one will bring. A good way to wrap up any year is by giving back. With the extra time on hand, it’s the perfect opportunity to make these shorter days more meaningful. In the spirit of giving, here are three (out of many listed on ColoradoGives.org) notable charities to donate to this season. Happy Holidays!

CONTINUING OUR STYLED BAR CART SAGA WITH THE BOULDER CREATIVE COLLECTIVE, HERE'S SOMETHING REPURPOSED WITH A PURPOSE.

T

is the season to "eat, drink and be merry." And what goes hand-in-hand with that old saying is entertaining. From

December first to January first most people are expecting family members and friends to come visit in hordes. Turning what's normally your home into a Holiday bed and breakfast. As we frantically sat on Pinterest in panic mode trying to get those DIY home projects off the to-do list and made in real life, we realized that if there's one thing any home shouldn't be missing, it is the 2016 loved fad - a styled bar cart. Don't be the one to miss the train on this trend. Keeping in mind the last thing anyone wants to do this month is buy more things, we teamed up with the women behind The Boulder Creative Collective and came up with a new concept: repurposing with a purpose. There's different ways to style a bar cart (even if it's temporary) with items lying around the home. In this case, we used a crate and a simple table stand. Voilà - a winter wonderland bar cart featuring a woodland creature and an adorable arctic friend. Kelly Cope Russack, one of the creators of The Boulder Creative Collective, gave us some tips on how to do-it-yourself.

TIPS FOR CREATING YOUR OWN BAR CART:

• Locate a table or a shelf that can be available for your gathering • Look for candles or vases • Linens are also a great texture (especially if they're patterned) • Glassware: look for a good statement piece--color or ornate. Offer a few options since most people drink different things. • Ice bucket: always classic. Look for a cool bowl, or a pot for ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL

easy ice access. If you're lucky enough, use your own bucket.

• Flowers, ornaments, or figurines for personality and beauty.

• Lastly, a seat or stool is nice for extra storage space. CONTINUED >

SAM ALVIANI, THE NEW CO-OWNER OF THE BREAD BAR IN SILVER PLUME, TELLS US A BIT ABOUT THE HOT SPOT TUCKED AWAY IN THE MOUNTAINS. ARTICLE SAM ALVIANI | PHOTOGRAPHY LAUREN DEFILIPPO

T

his time of year, I’m restless. A trip to the mountains—only 45 minutes to the sleepy mining town of Silver Plume—bridges the gap between

crisp fall weather and the impending cooler air at the base of the Rockies. I’m not a bartender. Six months ago, I would have scoffed at the idea of spending so much time at a bar. I am, however, an observer of place. Place is deeply felt, and like a meter or a gauge, I felt an attachment to the space that we call Bread Bar. And it wasn’t just me. Three other people grew an attachment to Silver Plume, and when the bar—a former mining supply store, then bakery, then bitters tasting room—went up for sale, we joked about it. The fact is, it was so much more than that. It was a dream for all of us in our own ways. Silver Plume is a sleepy whistle-stop, pleasantly eerie, a place where you creep down the roads slowly, out of some inexplicable, quiet respect for forgotten things. It is also magical, spirited with a tangible sense of history, rows of Western shop façades on Main Street, tidy Victorian houses interrupted by structures from original settlers that had fallen into disrepair—a living ghost town. At its height, the Lebanon Silver Mine brought a sweep of 2,000 miners and residents when it was first bored in the 1870s. In turn, the fortune of Silver Plume and its people fluctuated with the price of silver. As ore mining dwindled, the population mirrored its decline—in the 1960s, there were only 82 remaining residents. Today, about 150 people reside in the quaint town in the Clear Creek valley. In less than two months, the bar came together. The timing was poor—I was away for most of the little fixes at a graduate program in Vermont, and I missed some of the essential drawing together of things that would make it what it was. From across the country, I watched as it became a real thing. Almost overnight, we became bar owners, but more than that, keepers of a slice of time warp, deeply invested in the space and the town it exists in. It was, and is, an intimidating responsibility: to become part of the backstory, and to protect the natural character of a place we were wary of disturbing. We (I should say Rob) rebuilt the porch; Steve gutted and fixed up our tiny bathroom, while Casey figured out a way to make more room for guests. I toiled over a wallpaper choice that could subtly replace the antique flowered paper that had been up for decades. We worried over small changes, wondering if it would make the place feel overproduced. Amazingly, it still feels the same as it did when we first stepped in, long before it was ours.

Now Open

(CON TI N U ED)

Now it’s open and I see the sense of refuge it brings to people, and also, the unadulterated delight. It’s a return to something that they, like me, thought was long gone. In late July, we opened to the public, and we watch people discover it every weekend. A piece of history alive and breathing. Many people will continue to pass exit 226, but we find that more people come out of curiosity, for the cocktails and for the company. It’s a feeling, more than anything—something you have to experience for yourself. Bread Bar is open on Fridays from 4–10 p.m. and Saturdays from 2–10 p.m.; you can follow them on Facebook and on Instagram, @breadbarsp.

PITTER PATTER IS THE FIRST BABY & CHILDREN'S BOUTIQUE IN OLD TOWN LOUISVILLE IN SEVERAL DECADES.

T

ucked inside a little navy house, on historic Louisville’s Main Street, sits Pitter Patter, a small boutique devoted to treasuring childhood moments.

“Pitter Patter is bringing families a place where children are cherished and life's most precious moments are

celebrated. We are delighted daily to share in our customer's excitement over a new birth, a visit from the Tooth Fairy or even a little treat for a job well done,” says owner Liz Connor. Pitter Patter’s boys and girls clothing collection currently range in ages from newborn to six. What’s unique about the boutique, in addition to being Louisville’s first baby and children’s store in several decades, is that it goes far beyond a simple store to pop in for a present. “Our gifts and accessories aim to fascinate children's imagination and make parenting a little bit easier in any way that we can. We are parents ourselves and know a clever little feature, like the EZPZ MiniMat's ability to suction to surfaces, can make a big difference to families,” explains Connor.

TO & FROM The annual local gift guide that just made your list a little longer.

T

he holidays and giving are synonymous. Yes - gifts are an obvious part of that equation but it’s not the only way we give this season.

We also give through CONNECTING. It’s finally the time of year where schedule’s slow

down and there’s time to give to friends, family and the local community. As part of our annual local gift guide, we included categories of places people connect. We all come together at home. Maybe huddling around the fireplace, snuggled on the couch or laughing together at the dinner table. We come together at an art studio. Artist’s find meaning connecting with their work, and sharing their perspectives with others. We come together on outdoor adventures. Discovering a relationship with mother nature and sharing memories through wild experiences. We come together to gather, eat, drink and be merry. Give to your local community and give yourself to your loved ones. And when getting your holiday shopping done, don’t forget to keep it local. ~Happy Holidays~

T

here’s always an excuse for a dinner party, especially this time of the year. Family gatherings. Friendsgiving.

Holiday parties. It's all about friends and family coming together to eat, drink and connect. Connection happens to be the perfect word to describe the purpose of a soiree, and it’s also a concept that’s meaningful to local event planner Dagny Morrow who helped Lifestyle design three out-of-the-ordinary table concepts. • Local is the New Black • Minimalist-Minded & • A Global Setting Morrow owns and operates Last Best Weddings with her partner in planning, Liz Meyers. The pair started their business with connection in mind. “We thrive on relationships and building connections with local business owners in our community,” says Morrow. Each table came together through collaboration with local businesses and artists, which resulted in three tablescapes to dine for.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE OUT OF THE THREE TABLE AESTHETICS?

"Local is the new black is our favorite table concept because it showcases so much of what we personally love. Supporting our local community, eating high-quality local food and sharing food and local businesses with our friends are what we love to do in our everyday lives. Colorado is the home of so many wonderfully creative humans, and we hope to work with them all someday. If we can continue to support them by implementing their craft into our events, that is the butter to our bread." WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR HOSTS LOOKING TO STYLE THEIR OWN UNIQUE TABLE?

Have fun with it. Go to a local market and find inspiration from the seasonal vegetables. Go to the local florist and find inspiration from the seasonal florals. Whatever it may be, look to your local community to find inspiration, and have a blast putting together a dinner party for your loved ones. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DECOR DETAIL WHEN IT COMES TO A DINNER PARTY?

The food. When it comes down to it, we LOVE food. CONTINUED >

S

tyles change. Color and texture trends come and go. It’s not surprising an 11,562 square-foot home built and

decorated in 2001 would need some updates 14 years later. Okay, maybe a lot of updates. But the complete transformation recently completed by Ellis Construction—a high-end remodeling company serving Boulder county since 2001— goes above and beyond. It brought the Niwot home from the dark colors and heavy textures of a Mediterranean villa to a beautiful, luxury mountain look. Having recently purchased the home, the clients wanted to transform it to a fresh, refined style. No square-foot of the home was left untouched by this remodel which garnered Ellis Construction a bronze Colorado Award for Remodeling Excellence from the Homebuilders Association of Metro Denver earlier this year in the Whole House Remodel Over $1 Million category. Even the exterior was updated with fresh paint and the addition of an 8Kw photovoltaic system, as well as a remodel of the existing pool and hot tub. The home's interior includes all new electrical and home automation systems, knotty alder ceiling planks and custom wood box beams throughout. Eight bathrooms were fully gutted and rebuilt, including the master with the addition of a large steam shower. Six new fireplaces were added with decorative marble surrounds, and a 16-foot NanaWall glass wall system was added to the great room. The entry features dramatic new spiral staircase railings, newel posts, iron balusters and wooden stair updates. Fresh stain on the Australian Cypress hardwood floors brings them up to date, and a stunning custom chandelier floats from the second-floor ceiling all the way to the basement level. d“The clients put a lot of faith in the team and trusted us to bring their dream to life,” Ellis said. “It was a real testament to our strengths in management and communication.” CONTINUED >

Interior design finishes take this gorgeous home to another level. The fresh, straightforward look is pulled off by keeping things clean and clutter-free. Light fixtures are jewelry pieces, but without the fuss. Window coverings are simple fabric side panels to help maintain the straight and minimal lines of the spaces while also remaining soft to avoid a stark, contemporary look. David Loveland of MorganLoveland Interiors says this was important to balance out the hard surfaces in the rooms. “Every time I walk in the house, I still stop and take a deep breath because the work was so expansive,” said Ellis. “I am reminded each time of what a great accomplishment it was.”

THAT'S A WRAP

WE ASKED OUR FRIENDS DOWN AT ALPINE MODERN HOW THEY PERFECTED THE CRAFT OF WRAPPING. HERE ARE THEIR STEPS FOR TURNING A GIFT INTO A PICTURE PERFECT PRESENT.

e believe in quiet design in all things, including our gift wrapping. With

this in mind we select simple, yet elegant, wrapping material. This includes a medium-weight dark green paper with a subtle stripe, classic black ribbon, an Alpine Modern sticker. Sharp scissors and double sided tape are necessary to achieve the clean look.

Cut enough paper to fit your package. A great cheat is to use gridded wrapping paper.

Tucking under edges and creasing firmly gives your package a nice sharp edge and polished look.

Once your sides are in place, it's time to cut your ribbon. We keep it simple here, too - no bows or frills just a flat angled edge, taped down.

Double-sided tape is one trick that we use at Alpine Modern to make our packages have a seamless elegance.

Folding in the sides is an important step that takes a minute to finesse— don't rush this. Hug the paper so it's snug to the box, and make a sharp crease. Use the double-sided tape to make everything lay nice and flat.

Just where the ribbon edges meet we add an Alpine Modern sticker to complete the package. If you're wrapping at home, consider finding some fun stickers to add a little whimsey to your gift wrapping.

15 MINUTE WORKOUT MEET HEALTHY LIFESTYLE GURU SKY VAN HORN. OWNER & LEAD COACH AT ELEMENT 6 SPORTS MEDICINE ACUPUNCTURE AND FITNESS STUDIO. TO CONQUER WINTER WEIGHT GAIN, SKY HAS COME UP WITH A QUICK WORKOUT + RECIPE TO STAY ON YOUR FITNESS GAME EVEN THOUGH THE HOLIDAYS. PHOTOGRAPHY LAURA KINSER

S

taying motivated during the holiday season with all of the family obligations, the traveling, work parties and other dis-

tractions that can throw you off track, it’s not a surprise at all that staying motivated through the holidays is a challenge. In reality there are hundreds of excuses that can prevent you from staying on top of your bodywork, nutrition and fitness regimen. The good news here is you aren’t destined to gain extra pounds during the holiday season. Here's a workout to keep your body in motion. WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

An open mind, your body, a flat and clean surface. Maybe a yoga mat but it’s not necessary. HOW THIS WORKOUT WORKS:

Not all movement protocols need to take a long time or require equipment. Our intention is to give you a look into how to keep your health and fitness moving forward in difficult times. Our programing is specific and effective and will only take you 15 min to complete. Each 15 minute work out will consist of five sections of specific movements and rep schemes for you to complete. Each day's programming has a specific focus, i.e. upper body strength, full core activation, lower body stability and active mobility all done without sacrificing whole body conditioning for each day. Although keep in mind it is most important to have fun, focus on your breath and form, take breaks as often as you need to, and as you get stronger, you can always pick up the pace and take less breaks.

5 HEALTHY TIPS FOR THE

HOLIDAY SEASON The holidays are a time for celebration, eating, drinking and being merry with your colleagues, friends and family! Celebration doesn’t have to mean insatiable eating, or even worse, deprivation. It’s time to bring the focus back to the purpose. The secret here is to enjoy celebrating with a game plan. Here are 5 ways to keep your health, fitness and sanity over the holidays:

#1

#1: Shop Wellness for Your Diet Have healthy snack options available. The more available they are, the more likely you are to eat them. Super-Secret tip #1.5: Instead of Focusing on what you shouldn’t eat, focus on the promise you have made to eat your 5 servings of protein, vegetables and a little fruit each day.

#2

#2: Schedule Your Exercise Time Your schedule may be hectic but there's always time for a workout.

#3

#3: No Thank You You probably aren’t aware how much extra food you consume just from people offering it to you. Think before you take that food and decide if you really need it.

#4

#4: Stop the Baking Instead, get creative and bring an alternative whole food healthy dish, make non-food gifts, or if you must, prepare ingredients for baked goods and put them in a pretty jar – thus letting the recipient bake it up themselves.

#5

#5: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Keep your water bottle with you at all times. Element6Boulder.com

The trees lay bare, grasses have retreated and most plants are in a deep slumber until spring. That's why it's important to bring the outdoors in.
