Health and Fitness Goals As we stand on the brink of the new year, it’s a time teeming with excitement—a chance to reset, embrace fresh goals, and explore new horizons. In curating this edition of Boise Lifestyle, we opted for a mindset that steers away from quick fixes and short-term checkboxes. Our focus is on celebrating what proves sustainable over the long haul, aiming to inspire lasting, realistic improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Life, in its various dimensions—be it business, finance, food, home, or personal health—teaches us that it’s the consistent choices made on most days that truly make a difference. For better or worse, it’s the habits we cultivate routinely that shape our journey. Consider this: Taking a vacation every day might be impractical, but planning a few trips a year is achievable. Indulging in a lavish dinner with cocktails and creme brulee every night may not be the healthiest choice, but savoring such moments occasionally is perfectly fine. In essence, it’s not the sporadic choices we make; it’s the habits we adopt most of the time that shape our journey. So, as you plan that vacation or commit to a fitness community, don’t forget to relish the dessert at your favorite Restaurant. It’s not about what you do some days; it’s about what you do most days that sets the tone for a more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re cheering you on as you embrace a year filled with positive and mindful choices.

THE infusion of W ELLNESS FUELING YOUR WELL-BEING AND THE INTRIGUING WORLD OF IV THERAPY
ARTICLE BY SABINA DANA PLASSE
In the awe-inspiring landscape of Sun Valley, its world of wellness continues to evolve especially with IV therapy, which has gained popularity for its rapid delivery of fluids, nutrients, and medications directly into the bloodstream. Many people find it beneficial for medical conditions, hydration, and nutritional support. Guiding us through this intriguing therapy is Ryland Mauck-Duff, BSN, RN, a seasoned expert in the field and founder of EXTEN IV. The allure

of Sun Valley, renowned for its active lifestyle and attraction to wellness, sets the stage for an exploration into the potential of Intravenous (IV) therapy.
UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS
At its core, IV therapy involves the direct infusion of fluids, nutrients, and medications into the bloodstream. The immediate absorption bypasses the digestive system, offering a rapid replenishment for concerns ranging from dehydration to muscle fatigue. Ryland Mauck-Duff emphasizes the holistic nature of IV therapy, positioning it as a complement rather than a replacement for overall health.
FROM TRADITION TO TREND
With roots dating back over a century and a resurgence in popularity pioneered by Dr. John Myers in the 1950s, IV therapy has transitioned from a hospital setting to a more accessible option for seekers of well-being. The "drip lounge" experience, as MauckDuff describes it, has become a symbol of democratized self-care, catering to those seeking relief from various ailments. In response to an increased focus on health and well-being post-pandemic, IV therapy's appeal has come to Boise. EXTEN IV has expanded its reach from Sun Valley to Boise, bringing the essence of the drip lounge to Treasure Valley residents. This move aims to make IV therapy more accessible, encouraging individuals to take charge of their health and wellness.
“It is a great resource for individuals looking for a recovery boost or to improve their overall health with additional vitamins, electrolytes, and hydration.” — Ryland Mauck-Duff, BSN, RN As we navigate the intriguing and growing interest in IV therapy, we find ourselves at the intersection of tradition, meeting modern wellness practices where healing is an art, and well-being is a continual exploration. Ryland Mauck-Duff's expertise offers a compass for those intrigued by the mysteries and possibilities within the fascinating and rising acceptance of IV therapy. ExtenIV.com

HEART & SOUL OF IDAHO Idaho City’s historic small town charm during a weekend winter wonderland getaway
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY LOEB
Evergreens nestled into a sparkling blanket of white along the winding Highway 21 as we approached Idaho City. This historic town encompasses so much of what makes Idaho great that one might consider it to be the Heart of Idaho, and after our winter weekend escape there, it certainly has a special place in my heart! Idaho City is sprawling with history that still lives through its people, like Shelly Heffington. Owner of Majestic Mountain Ranch, Shelly doubled-back to Idaho City several years ago to care for the late Bill Sterling and continue

his dreams through developing a peaceful property into the perfect year-round retreat. After a welcoming tour of the property, we were supplied with maps to soak in more of Idaho’s history as we cozied up in our well-appointed, Rebels Rendezvous suite — a full kitchen, plush bed, and an alluring copper soaking tub surround by sunflowers. As the night settled in, we joined most of the town at the Gold Mine Saloon for Idaho City Limits. No one at this establishment is a stranger, only new friends, and neighbors, including the owners, Steve and Steve, who serve up cocktails and conversation, with shots from a unique whisky decanter! A local musician shared her story with us at the bar as I munched on a savory BBQ pulled-pork sandwich that’s worth going back for! Lively music still ringing in our ears, we finished the night in a bubbling warm oasis on our suite patio beneath the glistening icicles beneath a midnight sky. Waking for a morning stroll, I stepped into a snow globe with snowflakes dancing silently amongst a background of pine, some leaving kisses on my face. The chill of the air left me as I dove into a plate of egg-battered bread drenched in a syrup as sweet as the waitress at Diamond Lil’s. Part museum, steakhouse and saloon, the walls, bar, and ceiling are saturated with historic relics that left my mouth hanging open. Diamond Lil’s is the epitome of small town home cooking inside a time capsule filled with gems from the booming past that Idaho City had as a destination for settlers heading west for gold! This historic town encompasses so much of what makes Idaho great that one might consider it to be the Heart of Idaho, and after our winter weekend escape there, it certainly has a special place in my heart! Winter felt a bit warmer as we stepped back onto Main Street ready for the main event on this beautiful weekend in March, the Idaho City Chili Cookoff! The sun parted through the clouds as local business owners engaged in a spirited competition, offering a feast on the streets of Idaho City. Steaming chili was ladled into our souvenir bowls as we meandered from one station to another amongst the crowd of hungry visitors. Our tastebuds ignited with both classic and unique spoonfuls of red chili, white chili, and alligator chili! Violinist Alyssa Joy Claffey and guitarist Ronnie Long played as a lively duo as we tried to decide which chili to vote for as our favorite. On the way to check in for our next overnight accommodations, we made a pitstop at the Idaho City Grocery to fill a growler with the owner’s tasty homemade root beer with a fresh licorice flavor, just one of the several options on tap tucked at a bar behind the groceries and goods. I also couldn’t resist stopping to pose for a fun photo op in the Idaho City Post Jail! I quickly freed myself to explore the edible goods, souvenirs and locally made artwork in this adorable little shop. The Idaho City Hotel, a grand, snow-white two-story building just steps from the Chili Festival, gave us the opportunity to experience the history right in the heart of downtown. The stairs to the second level rooms gave a welcoming creak as we headed up to discover a clean and quaint room where I took some time to read up on the many outdoor winter activities in Idaho City, including snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and a family friendly sledding hill just a couple minutes outside town. As the sun set behind the trees, we sauntered back through the snow to check out the steakhouse and saloon side of Diamond Lil’s. Locals wished the bartender happy birthday while I
sipped on a classic mule sat atop a money-plastered bar beneath more antique bills dangling above. Country tunes belted from a glowing jukebox while billiard balls pinged together behind us as we enjoyed a cowboy style dinner at the bar. I scrambled outside the next morning to soak in the beauty of the freshly fallen snow glittering in the sun beneath a crystal blue sky. My nose soon led me into Walulla’s Coffee and Bake across the street, where it was hard to resist the alluring aroma and fresh baked goods. Back outside, I strapped on my snowshoes for a trek amongst the brilliant and bright winter wonderland. I felt immersed in nature in the quiet calm of winter without seeing another soul while circling through the forest around the quiet local airstrip on the Buena Vista Trail. Reluctant to leave the snow but having worked up an appetite, I returned for breakfast at Trudy’s Kitchen. We were welcomed by the waitress who had been our bartender the night before, as I gawked at a display case of delectable cream pies which are a feast for your eyes as much as they are for your taste buds! The staff move like a well-oiled machine to serve a hot and satisfying breakfast, including scrumptious cinnamon rolls. The weekend ending much too soon, we headed past the city limits, making a quick stop to get a glimpse of The Springs, which made me wish I’d made a reservation. The wintry views were some of the most idyllic that I’d ever seen amongst their shared pool or private spas. People were lounging, enjoying cocktails and snacks served by attentive and welcoming staff. Adding it to our bucket list for next winter, it has become clear that Idaho City has no shortage of friendly faces, historic relics, comfort food and fun opportunities to experience the great outdoors, especially during the picturesque winter season! E l eva t i n g Me n t a l He a l t h i n 2024 BUILDING A RESILIENT MIND: A ROADMAP TO MENTAL WELL-BEING
ARTICLE BY ALISON RILEY, LCSW
28
M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
It is a New Year and most people start it off by resolving to be healthier and better people. Typically this means more exercise, more vegetables and less sugar. However, despite being extremely common, few resolve to improve their mental health in the New Year. Our world is getting faster and more connected. We spend our days as busy as possible, with endless demands and checking off our to-do list, and our mental health often takes a low priority on this list. This has profound repercussions with an estimated 311,000 adults in Idaho having a mental health condition. This is well over 2.5x the population of Meridian! But it doesn’t have to be this way and with just a few changes in 2024 you can embark on a journey toward a healthier and more fulfilling life. It seems overly simplistic but our mind and body are connected. There has been substantial amounts of research into the relationship between mental and physical health but you don’t have to be a scientist to ponder how this affects you personally. Most of us have experienced the effects of stress on our health, noticing how in times of stress we tend to make less healthy choices about food, sleep and alcohol use. During these times, our bodies find it more difficult to fight off illnesses and recover quickly. We also tend to find ourselves feeling fuzzy, indecisive and less good at tackling problems. Work and home life tend to suffer as well with some estimates that it costs our U.S. economy $193 billion in lost earnings each year. According to the 2021 Mental Health America (MHA) report, Idaho is ranked 39th out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia in terms of overall mental health status – meaning there is still a long way to come to support those in need in our communities! This low ranking may be due to the stigma associated with mental illness, as well as a lack of access to qualified clinicians to help treat them. While psychiatrists and psychologists are expected to increase in the state, as of May 2021, Idaho had under 150 psychiatrists and 700 psychologists statewide. Despite being common afflictions, some view mental illness as a personal flaw or believe that seeking help is a sign of weakness, yet would never judge a cancer patient or person with diabetes as weak for seeking professional support. Most individuals do not put their mental health crisis in the hands of a psychiatrist or
therapist; it is far more likely that you will notice something wrong sooner than a medical professional and you can be the first step to getting yourself or your loved one the help they are most likely not getting. All it takes is a little knowledge and a conversation. There are many things that can cause an individual to be more likely to experience an episode of mental illness, including traumatic experiences, genetics and poverty. Women are more likely than men to experience mental illness, as well as racial and ethnic minority groups, those living in certain geographic areas and those who identify as LGBTQ+. The most common mental illnesses are anxiety and depression. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses, affecting approximately 31.1% of U.S. adults at some point in their lives. Anxiety disorders include common phobias, like the fear of snakes, as well as social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD, and generalized anxiety disorder. There are a variety of successful treatments available, including medication, therapy and even virtual reality treatments. One of the greatest impacts of depression is suicide. Suicide is a symptom of major depressive disorder and is treatable with quality interventions. Crisis hotlines like 988 and the text hotline 741741 are helpful, but simply asking directly if you suspect someone may be suicidal can save a life. It does not put the idea in the person’s head or make them more likely to hurt themselves. It shows you care and can create a conversation that may create a lasting impact. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental illness, it is important to seek professional help from a qualified mental health provider. The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a great resource and has classes and support groups. You can help fight the stigma by advocating for mental health support in your community, being vocal and proactive about your own mental health needs and encouraging fellow members of the community to get the help they need as well. By prioritizing mental health you are investing in your overall well-being. Now is the time to shift the narrative and make mental health a top priority for 2024, fostering a society where well-being is valued as much as any other aspect of life. TherapyBoise.net

Six weeks into the position of President and CEO of the Boise Metro Chamber, Bobbi-Jo Meuleman took time to talk with Boise Lifestyle. Bobbi-Jo’s passion for the Treasure Valley and its well-being is clear and contagious. Building on her 20-year career in public service, which she began right out of college, Bobbi-Jo’s work has spanned from staff positions with a U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative in Washington, D.C. to her Idaho public service work in two Governor’s offices and in the role of Idaho Department of Commerce Director. Bobbi-Jo knows her way around state and national government. When asked about leaving government work, Bobbi-Jo shared that she was “intrigued by the opportunity to get to work directly with the business sector in the Treasure Valley – to lead an organization that works with the wonderful businesses here in the Treasure Valley. This position lets me participate in and support working with the community which is exciting. Working on relationships CONTINUED >

with local businesses and governmental entities and being a part of business advocacy is a critical part of this work. What I really like about this job is that I get to bring together all the aspects I’ve enjoyed during my 20-year career to keep the Treasure Valley a great place to live.” Bobbi-Jo is asking big questions about what needs to be done to help Treasure Valley businesses succeed. Thus far, she’s identified business needs tied to much-needed investments in infrastructure, transportation, and education. Bobbi-Jo says: “Everyone

needs to be at the table to explore how to address the needs of the present and the future.” While working with Chamber staff, Bobbi-Jo describes her approach this way. “I want to empower my people and to have a team that feels empowered to do their jobs. I’m not a micromanager. I want people to feel that they have the autonomy and tools to be able to do their jobs successfully. I believe in collaboration and communication. Open lines of communication are vital to me.”
“What I really like about this job is that I get to bring together all the aspects I’ve enjoyed during my 20-year career to keep the Treasure Valley a great place to live.”
Bobbi-Jo also shared that “the Chamber is a great organization with great members and a great board. People come together to share knowledge, to build the community, and to do good things for the Treasure Valley. This work is not really about me. It’s about the organization and the members. I’m a doer. I want to ensure that we keep this wonderful organization strong and thriving to keep the Treasure Valley a place that people want to live.” Bobbi-Jo grew up in Montana. She and her husband met in Washington, D.C. where he was working for an elected official from Idaho which prompted their move here nearly 15 years ago.

hen people think about Florida vacations they often imagine thrill rides in Orlando, Everglades wildlife, or Miami’s night life. But Fort Walton Beach and Destin in the Florida panhandle provide plenty of thrills, wildlife, and night life without crowds or theme parks. The powdery, snow-white sand of the Emerald Coast is made up of finely ground, perfectly round quartz crystals. Soft as cornstarch, the sand squeaks beneath your bare feet with every step. Thrills await you on the Gulf. Carouse with scalawags aboard the Buccaneer pirate cruise, scuba dive on a natural reef or parasail high over the waves. The Emerald Coast offers nautical adventure for everyone. Closer to shore you might
experience the delight of a devil ray or skate encounter. After immersing yourself in the warm emerald water, head to one of the local eateries with panoramic waterfront views and dine on delectable seafood fresh from the Gulf. The Shack, in Fort Walton Beach, received Trip Advisor’s Traveler’s Choice Award for being in the top 10% of restaurants in the world. Try their summer salad – a fresh spring mix topped with strawberries, mandarin orange slices, sliced red onions, candied pecans, bleu cheese crumbles and homemade strawberry balsamic vinaigrette. Or treat yourself to the Firecracker Shrimp Tacos drizzled with spicy remoulade sauce and a side of lemon dill rice at The Back Porch, a Destin tradition since 1974. Military tradition is strong in the area. The Navy’s Blue Angels home base is in
nearby Pensacola. The fastest plane ever built, the SR-71 Blackbird, is the centerpiece at the Air Force Armament Museum. Other warbirds housed in the museum include a Mustang and Thunderbolt from WWII. Birds of a different kind soar in the Panhandle’s skies, including the great blue heron. The rookery in Veterans Park on Okaloosa Island is home to nearly 200 species. Follow the Women Veterans Memorial pathway to view life-size bronze sculptures by Jon Hair which honor eight women who made significant military service contributions throughout U.S. history. At Henderson Beach State Park look for black-chinned hummingbirds, piping plovers, American oystercatchers and more. Hear a different kind of warbling from musicians, such as Elvis Costello and Rosanne Cash, at the 30A Songwriters Festival from January 12 - 15, 2024. With entertainment options including comedy shows, a touch of magic, or live music, Fort Walton Beach’s nightlife is vibrant. Every Saturday, The Block offers a night of laughs. On Wednesday, electric slide your way across the dance floor. The longest running magic show on the Gulf Coast, Maximum Magic at HarborWalk Theater in Destin, features Noah and Heather Wells, who were awarded the Merlin Award, magic’s equivalent to the Oscar.

Enjoy local and regional artists at Downtown Music Hall on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, January 21, check out singer/songwriter Nick Horton. The Island Resort at Fort Walton Beach hosts bonfires on the beach, live music and karaoke. Game for something different? Try vintage PacMan or Mario Kart on a Nintendo 64 at The Rad Bar. Sample some different games like indoor hacky sack and giant Jenga while tasting a craft beer at the Salty Duck.
After sundown, join the hunt for ghost crabs and sea turtles. Pick up a free flashlight with a red filter (to avoid disturbing turtles with bright lights) at the DestinFort Walton Beach Visitor’s Welcome Center. Four types of sea turtles nest in the area from May 1st through October 31st: Loggerhead, Green, Kemp’s Ridley, and Leatherback. Whether your dream vacation is to fish, snorkel, golf, or do nothing at all, the Emerald Coast has it all.

KELLY COX’S HOUSE OF CREATURE OFFERS NOVEL APPROACH TO MEAL KITS

“
“I’m the geek who will spend three days making the traditional French cassoulet. And getting that perfectly crusty top and making just a really simple radicchio salad on the side.”
Are you a culinary explorer? Kelly Cox, founder of House of Creature, is. And after years of globetrotting for her PBS program, “Original Fare,” she’s determined to impart her passion for flavor to others. “I’m just so curious about what people make and why they made it,” she said. “And so, being curious I think is really where it starts and, from there, trying something new.” That’s where House of Creature’s Culinary Adventure Kits come in. “Doing a monthly food kit is really about what’s in season and what we should be celebrating,” Cox said. “And a lot of that is because Idaho’s season is different than any other state I’ve lived in before. My goal is really to showcase what we’re making on the farm and then also what other people are making both here in the Treasure Valley area and Idaho, as well as other sorts of interesting global ingredients and artisans. I’m so passionate about other makers. It’s so important for me to showcase them.” Cox’s world travels often had her out learning about ingredients from the people who made or grew them, which she wanted to share with the kits. “You get together with a group of friends or your family and you try something new, or maybe it’s not too new for you, but you might get to indulge in ingredients you haven’t had before. And it comes with all the details on what is included as well as a written recipe and, most of the time, a video recipe so you know how to do it. I want to help people learn and enjoy this, so I’m here to engage with folks to help them get the best experience.”
The kit prices vary, depending on what’s in season. “They’re incredibly small batch,” Cox said. “We make like 40 kits per month for now. I can’t wait for that to change and for us to grow and expand.” Cox moved to Idaho in 2020, purchasing two acres in Star which she now farms with her husband and parents. While she tried to get “Original Fare” going again, the media landscape had changed. And so, House of Creature and the kit idea blossomed. “With House of Creature, I’m trying to provide a house with many different windows and doors for people to engage and support healthy and delicious food systems.” As for the name? “Creature is a large animal paper mâché head you can actually wear on your head,” Cox said. “I got her when I was in Haiti in a village that makes animal masks for Carnival. Which was a really hilarious thing to get through customs. Creature has always sort of been my doppelganger. And for House of Creature, it was time for her to rise up and be the overarching mascot.” If you’re looking for winter meal ideas, Cox offered her favorite, which she intends to feature in January. “I’m the geek who will spend three days making the traditional French cassoulet. And getting that perfectly crusty top and making just a really simple radicchio salad on the side. With like the perfect glass of wine, which you could go with a really bright, acidic white or some sort of juicy, jammy red. Oh, that would be heaven. And probably a nice big sourdough baguette with just a little bit of olive oil and salt.” If you’re hungry now, visit houseofcreature.com.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE Exploring Mycology with the Southern Idaho Mushroom Club
What do the phrases pink disco, club foot, drab tooth, and the dewdrop dapperling have in common? Aside from possibly being a great Indie band name, they are all types of fungi! With tens of thousands of identified species and a greater estimation in the millions, fungi remain one of the most incredible mysteries of our planet. With miles and miles of mycelial networks living underfoot at this very moment, it’s no wonder that some people are drawn to the magic of mycology.
As Dr. Mickey Myhre, President of the Southern Idaho Mushroom Club explains, “I became interested in fungi about five years ago when I attended a workshop led by Peter McCoy, a Portland mycologist who piqued my interest when he pointed out that out of the over one million species of fungi believed to inhabit the Earth, fewer than 5% have even been identified.” He continues, “My interest was further spurred by my wife’s astoundingly positive response to drinking turkey tail

mushroom tea after testing positive for West Nile virus at the Red Cross; her response was quite dramatic - her nightly headaches ceased, and her malaise/feeling of being sick pretty much vanished.” The story of Dr. Myhre’s wife is just one of the thousands of similar experiences with mushrooms across the globe. Even the National Institute of Health praises mushrooms for their abilities to help prevent and treat Parkinson’s, hypertension, and reduce the risk of stroke. Their health components have been frequently synthesized into medicine and have been used as antibacterial agents, antibiotics, and so much more. As their uses increase and the desire to harvest and forage becomes more popular, Dr. Myhre has some advice before you decide to go out on your own. “Rule number one in eating mushrooms you forage,” he says is, “Never ever, ever eat any mushroom unless you are absolutely sure of what it is. There are many, many subtle means of identifying mushrooms, and you never want to eat anything you are not absolutely sure of.” This is not to be taken lightly. While mushrooms are full of magic, medicine, and mystery, they can also be incredibly poisonous and lethal. To complicate matters even further, a safe mushroom can look eerily similar to its toxic counterparts, so always exercise extreme caution when foraging. If you’re unsure: don’t eat it. Always consult an expert. “One of the benefits of belonging to a mushroom club like ours is getting to know the people who really know the mushrooms and can teach newcomers how to proceed safely.” “I would add that, because the resources of academic mycology are few, the numbers of people studying these organisms tiny, and the funding nonexistent, the task of uncovering the mysteries of these fascinating organisms—which by the way, may be the largest biomass on the planet since 90% of all plants rely on their fungal partners for nutrients and water—the task of studying these organisms falls to the citizen scientist. This represents a huge opportunity for those like me interested in science to make a contribution,” Dr. Myhre shares enthusiastically.
