With the changing of the seasons comes the time for a refresh, and we have you covered with where to find the newest fall styles around town. Our choices can reveal a little bit of our personality, and it is a great way to express ourselves. So bring on fall with your own best style, and we will see you around town.

FOURANDGENERATIONSCOUNTING PARMA MOTOR VU DRIVE-IN ARTICLE BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY @KADERANDREWS, @PIXIESTARLET, @MARI.HOSKINS, @TINCANGOAT CONTINUED > PC: @kaderandrews 19| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOISESEPTEMBER 2022

Susan Haaheim handles the growing concession line with the ease and demeanor of someone who has been doing this for a long time, and in fact, she has. “I was born and raised in Idaho and spent a lot of my childhood playing and working at the Drive-In,” Susan shares with us before the movie. We dug into our pile of snacks and settled into the back of my RAV4, with the backdoor swung open as wide as she would go. Just as we achieved the perfect viewing angle and maximum level of comfiness, the show had begun. Bundled in our blankets, surrounded by snacks, and sharing this evening with two dozen other couples and families—each doing the same: reaching for snacks and snuggling into blankies—was an experience far greater than any Friday movie on the couch. However, nearly seven decades ago, it wasn’t all snuggles and snacks for the Motor Vu. In 1953, Susan’s grandparents, Gladys Anderson and Bill Dobbs, transformed this once banal dirt lot into what is it today. They did this to combat their latest enemy: the television. Before the drive-in, the family were proud owners of a string of local theaters, alongside the Jewell family. Gladys and Bill were incredibly slighted by this new technology. The (at the time) brand new TV had everyone and their dog enamored. No one was going out to movies anymore. It was a struggle to compete with television, but with cre ative ingenuity, the family prevailed. And now, 69 years later, Susan looks forward to 2023 and celebrating their 70th anniversary. “There aren't many drive-ins left across the U.S. It is such a unique and nostalgic business. It’s so much fun to have patrons young and old come out to enjoy watch ing movies under the stars. As a child I took it for granted,” Susan says. “Now it is my legacy and my favorite subject.”

The Parma Motor-Vu is open Friday through Sunday, mid-April into October every year. “It is worth the drive to come out for a date night or fun for the whole family. We have a full snack bar and a beautiful digital picture on our 60-foot screen.”

The moon rises slowly into the sky as the sun creeps behind the horizon, taking with it the heat of the day. A cool atmo sphere settles over the massive gravel lot, already filling with cars—couples laughing, children darting into the concession stand, running out with armfuls of popcorn and treats. The giant screen buzzes on and a hurried husssshhh falls over the crowd, each tuning their radio stations to the proper channel.
And so, unlike many things these days, the Motor Vu still has some of its original equipment. While one of Susan’s big gest challenges is maintaining the nearly 70-year-old build ing, the same 1953 Manley popcorn popper is still running like a dream. And still making the best popcorn around.

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO TAKING YOUR DOG TO THE BEACH ROAD TRIP TRAVEL ROAD TRIP TO THE COAST ARTICLE BY KIMBER PATTERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEN HEYMAN, POPPY HILDEBRANDT + PROVIDED Inn at Discovery Coast Long Beach, WA Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa 24

Days five through seven: Ninety minutes north of Long Beach sits the historic Tokeland Hotel, the old est hotel in the state of Washington. Owner Heather L. Earnhardt, Seattle chef and author of Big Food, Big Love, has created a haven for travelers with warmth, fine dining, and restful lodging augmented by diverse art and entertainment. The hotel’s restaurant, The Wandering Goose, offers food grown from the farm on the premises. The entire property feels like a porthole to a magical time and place; one connected to his tory, Southern hospitality, and even the ghosts who wander the halls. There is plenty to do in Tokeland, including biking, hiking, fishing, crabbing, surfing, kayaking, beach combing, swimming, bird watching, and kiting, but it’s hard to beat playing board games, reading, eating, drinking, and soaking up the vibe of this one-of-a-kind hotel. The journey home finally got underway when I suggested that we stay in Pendleton on the way back to buy a handmade shirt. Once again, Joey wagged in agreement.
Day one: Pendleton, Oregon may be known for its iconic rodeo, wool blankets, and whisky, but this western town halfway between Boise and Portland has plenty of cred beyond its pioneer beginnings. MotoLodge, a fully renovated mid-century motor lodge has modern rooms and a pet-washing sta tion. Their expert staff recommended the dogfriendly Oregon Grain Growers Distillery for din ner. This farmer-owned distillery offers 13 varieties of house made spirits, and wows with remarkable food. While shopping in the Historic District, we discovered New York Clothier, a haberdashery spe cializing in hand-crafted shirts that are both tradi tional and updated for the modern man. Later we indulged in whisky bonbons from Alexander’s Artisan Chocolates. (Note to self: Come back to Pendleton when we can stay longer.)
for rejuvenation. The cozy and beautiful room included a sumptuous bathtub and the sound of crashing waves. A short trail led us to the 28-mile-long sandy beach where Joey ran with gleeful abandon, and his joy was contagious. We hiked the dog-friendly trails at Cape Disappointment State Park; explored the Historic District of Oysterville; walked along the shore as often as possible; and fol lowed Joey’s good sense to indulge in daytime naps. Next door, the Pickled Fish Restaurant has views, an inspired menu and a daily Cocktail for a Cause benefitting a local organization. After only a couple of days, we felt like locals ourselves.
Day two: Astoria, Oregon holds plenty of activity for two and four-legged adventurers. After strolling through downtown, Joey slept in front of the fireplace while we enjoyed the spectacular views from our comfy bed at the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa. Everything was included to make Joey’s stay wonderful—a lux urious Pendleton bed, delicious treats, and a stylish bandana to show off his good looks.
Days three through five: Just 30 minutes north of Astoria sits Long Beach, Washington and the Inn at Discovery Coast, a sanctuary by the sea designed We hiked the dog-friendly trails at Cape Disappointment State Park, walked along the shore as often as possible, and followed Joey’s good sense to indulge in daytime naps.
When I asked my husband what he wanted for his birthday, he replied, “I want to see the ocean.” Our dog Joey wagged his tail in agreement, so with Boise in our rearview mirror, we all drove west on I-84 toward the cool coasts of Oregon and Washington.

Is an Adjustable Rate Mortgage Right for You? A
An Adjustable Rate Mortgage, commonly referred to as an ARM, is a loan in which the rate is variable for a portion of the loan period. In contrast, a fixed-rate mortgage has the same interest rate assigned for the life of the loan. An ARM will carry a lower rate for the initial period of the loan than a static fixedrate loan. This option may help a borrower qualify for a larger loan amount or a more expensive home.
REVIEWING OPTIONS WITH YOUR PREFERRED LENDER IS A GREAT PLACE TO START WHEN CONSIDERING FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITIES AND GOALS FINANCIAL BUZZ | PROFESSIONAL SERVICES30
Are you looking to buy a home and have concerns about the cost of a home and the current rate environment? If so, an Adjustable Rate Mortgage may be right for you.
"An Adjustable Rate Mortgage, commonly referred to as an ARM, is a loan in which the rate is variable for a portion of the loan period. In contrast, a fixed-rate mortgage has the same inter est rate assigned for the life of the loan."
WHAT FACTORS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED? At some point, an ARM rate will adjust depending on the terms of the ARM loan chosen. There are many ARM options available, and understanding the program is critical to knowing how the loan payments and interest rate may change over time.
WHAT IS AN ADJUSTABLE RATE MORTGAGE?
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF AN ARM? • Lower initial rate • May increase buying power • Lower initial monthly payment HOW
What may seem like a good opportunity to get into a loan/home, may not be the best opportunity in the future if the rate environment changes and the adjust ment period isn’t favorable to long-term financial goals.
Reviewing all disclosures and thoroughly reviewing the terms of an ARM loan with your lender is crucial to mak ing the best decision.
Some things to consider may be, for example, if a consumer is looking to stay in a home for under five years, a 5/1 ARM or 7/6 ARM may be something to consider. In the first example, a 5/1 ARM, the initial portion of the loan would be in place for 5-years. The rates can then adjust according to the terms of the loan agreement every 1-year. A 7/6 ARM initial portion would be in place for 7-years, then the rate can be adjusted to the loan term every 6-months. If the goal of being in a home less than five-years is attained, the fluctuation of the rates after the introductory period would not be a concern; however, if the goal is not achieved, the fluctuating rate may cause budget con straints if the consumer is not prepared for a rate and payment increase. DOES BEST
In addition to a review with a lender, there are many great resources available for consumers to do their own research. The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau has many financial resources that may benefit a consumer looking for education, including an in-depth section on Adjustable Rate Mortgages. These resources can be accessed by visiting ConsumerFinance.gov and search ing for Adjustable Rate Mortgages or ARM loans.

BALLOON EVENT THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHER’STHEEYE A Sky CONTINUED > 34
The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic, a colorful family-friendly production kicking off on Wednesday, August 31st, is an espe cially magical experience from behind the lens. So, as a new Boise photographer, I was thrilled to learn about the event that has been around since 1991. After a pandemic-driven cancel lation in 2020 and family plans in 2021 that cut my experience short, my hopes are flying high for 2022. Capturing these colorful hot air balloons as they come to life through breaths of fire requires early rising. Once they reach the sky just after 7 a.m., the race is on to find the perfect angle to capture the balloons in all their glory. Popular viewing spots are along the Boise Train Depot and Shoreline Drive. From that location, the morning sun rises from behind the foothills, which provides a great angle to capture the balloons as they light up

Visit SpiritOfBoise.com for more information and thank you to our contributing photographers:
It’s easy to play favorites from behind the lens and focus on the most colorful or interesting of the bunch. I could easily dedicate a whole morning to following one balloon, while another day might be spent cap turing that wide-angle view of the city with its fanciful fliers. Every day is a chance to try again - to set off on a different path to land a few good shots before the balloons retreat back to the ground just an hour or two later. But before picking a location to set up, it’s probably best to make sure all the camera gear made it out of the house during those barely awake 5 a.m. departures. Decisions must be made about trans portation, too. Cars may be faster, but setting off on foot or by bike could be advantageous in some areas.
Another very important factor for capturing that ideal image is light. Such questions float through a pho tographer’s mind faster than the balloons. Where is the sun, where are the shadows? Once they rise above trees and buildings, clouds can still hide the sun or cast a shadow upon the balloon at the exact moment you snap a photo.

like lanterns and reflect off the water below at Ann Morrison Park. As the balloons move higher, I found it best to do the same. For nearby hikes with city views, the hills of the Military Reserve may be an ideal loca tion to capture the balloons hovering over the city before they land on roof tops, streets or even the front lawn of the Capital building!
All of this consideration and strategizing requires patience, because things never go as planned... but that’s also part of the fun. Chasing balloons is an unpredictable, but exciting venture, like trying to capture a butterfly before it flies away, or lands just out of sight. There’s always a new angle or perspective. When you look at a four-year-old child, what thoughts do you think are running through their head? Maybe something about a snack or their new favorite toys. But when Marlee Drake was a child, her focus was already on design. At the time, drapes specifically.

“I have always been artistic and come from a very talented and creative family. When I was four years old, I walked into my new babysitter’s home and said ‘Oh! What lovely draperies!’ So, I think I’ve always had an eye for interior design,” Marlee says, with a smile.

Several years ago, Marlee and design colleague MK Houston traveled to the Netherlands. During their trip they explored the architecture of small Dutch villages. “We found that the village had created their own color of green for their windmills and small village homes. Some of these ancient windmills are still preserved today. The green was so beautiful, inspired by nature: happy, calming, and energizing.

design elements. “I believe nature in inte rior spaces is a beautiful design element. It's important for balance and well-being for our clients and the way they function in their personal spaces.” This natural mind set brought Marlee to floral design for a number of years, where she won numerous awards for her expertise in that field.
Perhaps the best part about her position as VP is that Marlee gets to use her talents as an added benefit to their customers. “As part of a service for our clients, I draw the floor plans and room renderings so the clients know exactly how the room will look when complete,” she continues. As a further testament to her work she says, “I have also designed a couple of houses, one of which has been built two different times by different “Curatingbuilders.”abeautiful experience for our clients is our number one objective,” Marlee says. “We had a client come into our store several years ago. She said she would come—not just to shop—but to escape from the daily pressure at work. “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.”
It is a color that has stood the test of time. We were so excited when we found the per fect project in Sun Valley: a beautiful home that evokes a vintage Sun Valley feeling. We used that green in the kitchen and on the ceilings of the bathrooms.” Marlee has traveled all over the world, building her repertoire, and filling her cup with elegant and creative ideas to trans form Treasure Valley houses into homes.
This principle is the driving force behind the NEST, where Marlee serves as vice president alongside owner and founder MK Houston. Marlee and MK share an appreciation for the unique, one-of-akind inventory selection that allows them both to express their design creativity.
And Marlee knows, for anyone who has ever moved into a new house, it’s not the walls or the floors that make a home, but rather it is what we bring into it: our love and energy, and of course, our furniture. The way we design our space is what ele vates and transforms our house into our home. It becomes a space where family gathers and memories are made. A place to host, to connect, to celebrate, and to come together under one roof.

“When I moved here twenty years ago, I started going to the Blue Door [a now-defunct jazz club]. The first time [that] I heard a jazz performance by pro fessionals in Eagle, I heard world-class music.” He previously dreamt of opening a jazz club of his own, but decided that keeping such a thing afloat would be near-impossible financially. With that in mind, he operates the Eagle Jazz Festival to celebrate and expose people to great talent, not to make money.

The festival is the first of its kind in Eagle and will take place on Friday and Saturday, September 16th and 17th. One could reasonably assume the mind behind a big Idaho-Jazz festival would be that of a local musician - but not in this case.

“Two or three years ago, my friend and I [were talking]. ‘What about a non-profit community jazz festival?'" Eisele and his team soon filed for a non-profit. However, a friend then pointed out that there was still one important party missing from the equation: The city of Eagle. “Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport [Jazz Festival]... Hello! You gotta have the city involved.” Eisele wrote to the city council and heard back instantly from an unlikely advocate: Mayor Jason Pierce. “I never wrote to the Mayor, but I heard back from his office. He was actually trying to talk me into doing it" (laughs). about the eagle jazz festival!
“I’m a physician, not a musician. That’s my tagline,” says Dr. Stan A. Eisele, MD, who is the President and co-founder of the Eagle Jazz Festival. Eisele doesn't perform, nor book live music. In fact, he prefers being called a "Jazz Activist" rather than a con cert promoter. However, he was raised on jazz by his father in Southern California and is a life-long super-fan and supporter of the genre.
If you've been around a while, you might know that the Treasure Valley's jazz scene is full of top-tier talent. A new event coming this September, the Eagle Jazz Festival, is setting out to celebrate that talent. Among the artists performing will be local legends like Steve Eaton, and newcomers like singer/songwriter Farayi Malek and the acoustic jazz pianists in the Keelan Dimick Trio. There will even be a professional tap dancer, Andrew Nemr!

“I’m always going to [host the festival] the third week of September, and Monterey [Jazz Festival] is always the fourth weekend,” he tells us. “But I’m realizing people can get booked in Seattle, swing by Eagle, then go down to Monterey. That’s a West Coast circuit!” He speaks about it with so much enthusiasm, you can’t help but believe he'll make that happen. But first things first, he has to prepare for September. You can buy tickets, check out the locations, discover the artists playing, and learn more about the Eagle Jazz Festival at EagleJazzFestival.org .
With the enthusiastic support of the city and spon sors like the Eagle Arts Commission and his employ ers at St. Alphonsus, everything is coming together smoothly. Each sponsor is local, and the artists all have a background in Idaho. Additionally, Justin Neilson, the music director, picked the best-of-the-best art ists. Mediocrity was not an option. That said, Eisele hopes this is the start of something bigger. Since there are so many talented jazz musicians locally, he sees the Eagle Jazz Festival as a chance to further include Idaho in the regional jazz community.

EXPERT HELP | LIFE + CULTURE ARTICLE BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATIONAL INTERAGENCY FIRE + BLM NATIONAL INTERAGENCY FIRE CENTER SERVES AS A HUB FOR THE NATION’S FIRE DEFENSE STRATEGY AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT HERE IN BOISE meeting idaho's wildfire challenges 60

"As the largest and most complex fire program within the Department of the Interior, the BLM has some of the very best when it comes to wildland fire," – Grant Beebe, BLM Fire Director 2020 smokejumpers training with a new plane in Boise
Idaho is no stranger to wildfires, and unfortunately the state is becoming more familiar as the years go by. Fire activity now starts earlier in the spring and lasts longer into the fall, putting a massive strain on resources and wreaking havoc on the land.
“The BLM is a leader in the nation’s management of wildland fire and carries out a broad range of actions to protect the public, natural landscapes, wildlife habitat, recreational areas, and other values and resources,” shares Samantha Storms, Deputy Chief of External Affairs for BLM Fire and the National Interagency Fire Center.
Fortunately, there are hundreds of brilliant minds and a group of agencies and land managers working together to solve this problem. One such agency is the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
NIFC was established in 1965 in an effort to prevent the duplication of work and resources of various land managers. Agencies like the Forest Service and the National Park Service quickly began to realize that wildland fire management was a problem they shared.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of pub lic land, located primarily in 12 western states and Alaska. Their mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and pro ductivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoy ment of present and future generations.

"As the largest and most complex fire program within the Department of the Interior, the BLM has some of the very best personnel when it comes to wildland fire," says Grant Beebe, BLM Fire Director. Alongside the BLM, several other agencies including the Forest Service, the National Weather Service, and the Department of Defense have come together to create the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), which now serves as a hub for the nation’s fire defense strategy and resource management. Just adjacent to the Boise Airport lies 55 acres of equipment, aircraft tanker operations, and more—all dedicated to the problem of fighting wild land fires, and other natural disasters.

EXPERT HELP | LIFE + CULTURE62
While we may take solace and a sense of pride knowing that the nation’s firefighting hub is located in our very own capital city, it is still important that we each do our part to protect our state’s beautiful natural resources. On average, more than 85% of wildfires are human-caused. Which means that more than 85% of wildfires are preventable.

Crystal Lake Wilderness Study Area 63| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOISESEPTEMBER 2022
As demand for more wildland firefighters continues to surge, NIFC and its partners are placing a greater empha sis on employee wellbeing. Agencies are shifting to fulltime positions for firefighters, rather than seasonal jobs, in hopes to retain employment. They are also focusing on increased pay and upward mobility, as well as offering an abundance of mental health resources.
Storms continues, “The partner agencies at NIFC do remarkable work. It’s far more than a collection of federal buildings. It is the epitome of interagency cooperation and collaboration. It’s the energy of nearly 600 employ ees, representing eight separate federal and state agen cies, engaged in multiple aspects of the same mission: to develop national wildland fire policy and lead in its implementation; and to serve as the logistical and sup port center for the nation’s wildland fires and, at times, other national disasters and emergencies.”
NIFC was created as a platform to cut costs, communi cate ideas, and bring together resources to fight a mutual enemy: wildland fires and other natural disasters.
In anticipation of the 2022 fire year, the BLM and other land managers have been taking proactive measures to hopefully alleviate some of the burden of wildfires. One of their primary initiatives has been to reduce vegetation buildup and to educate communities on how they can best manage their land to prevent fires from spreading.
"After 17 years working as a BLM firefighter, I can hon estly say that I have met and worked with some of the most incredible people. BLM Fire has taken me all across the country and even as far as Australia," says Brian Holmes, Idaho native and Engine Captain for the BLM Idaho Boise District. "It's no secret that wildfires are on everyone's mind this time of year.”
On average, more than 85% of wildfires are humancaused, which means that more than 85% of wildfires are preventable. Always practice responsible recreation. Make sure your fires are completely out. Never use fire works near dry grasses, and don’t throw cigarette butts out of car windows.
“The 2022 fire year won't be without its share of chal lenges, but we are proud of our wildland firefighting personnel and the way they respond to wildland fires on public lands,” Storms concludes.
While we may take solace and a sense of pride knowing that the nation’s firefighting hub is located in our very own capital city, it is still important that we each do our part to protect our state’s beautiful natural resources.
“At NIFC, we support many different kinds of emergency responses, including floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, vol canic eruptions, riots, terrorist attacks (9/11 and Oklahoma City bombing), and radios to Haiti,” says Storms. “However, our primary focus is on wildland firefighting. The agen cies that are represented here share firefighting supplies, equipment, and personnel, which helps ensure efficient and cost-effective incident management.”
