As a Native,
I know the Treasure Valley. I know Idaho. “When it came time to sell the home we’ve loved since we building it a decade ago, we wanted someone who’d treated it as the home they loved & “wanted the best for”, too. From the minute I spoke with Ian Brown, I knew he was that professional. Ian’s communication style is clear & so responsive, we always felt in the know & like we were his number one priority. His community reputation is worth gold itself, as when we needed a few items “punched” to get our sale price, Ian arranged quality professionals to make our home ready. He’s also an impeccable planner, so we knew what steps we were on & what was coming next during the whole process, from readying our home for the market to signing our closing docs, again with local professionals. If you want no-stress, high-trust process for the sale or purchase of Treasure Valley real estate, Ian Brown is the best hands you could put yourselves in!” - Kerri M. Eagle, ID

A Happy Heart
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Vince Gewalt | vince.gewalt@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Kimber Patterson | kimber.patterson@citylifestyle.com
Welcome to February, the month of hearts! What is your favorite thing about February? There are hearts everywhere, which always takes me back to my younger days and makes me smile! As you journey through February, do what makes your heart happy. It may still be cold out there without much sunshine, but it’s a new month and full of opportunity. Take care of your heart and someone else’s this month and do something that creates more happiness in your lives and reap the many rewards of showing love. Pay someone a compliment. Go have a glass of wine with someone you admire. Surprise a friend with flowers. In fact, surprise yourself with flowers! As you read stories about our community of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. If you’re looking for ideas for Valentine’s Day, check out the “8 Date Night dining destinations” in our October 2021 issue which which you can find on our digital site, CityLifestyle.com. I want to take this opportunity to amend the photo credit for Alavita in Boise to also include Visit Southwest Idaho (SWITA). So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time and attention, too. Do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop and dine locally and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

SPREAD KINDNESS WITH COINS

AND WATCH YOUR INVESTMENT GROW
Kindness is integral to all our relationships. Whether giving or receiving kindness, the lasting effect is a positive one. A single, small act can make the day of another person just a little brighter, and in turn they are more motivated to help someone else. It’s a never-ending cycle of human decency. This is why Morgan Hoffman, a local Idahoan, created Kindness Coins. Kindness Coins are ceramic coins that are given to someone along with an act of kindness. The coins feature a QR code on the back so the receiver can scan to see the act of kindness that brought the coin to them. For anyone unable to use QR codes, they can enter a unique code on the Kindness Coins website for information on their coin.
The coins’ journey can be tracked through software, which was one of the more challenging parts of the process in developing Kindness Coins. It took Morgan ten months to create the website and the coins themselves. Although it was a daunting task, Morgan explains why she created Kindness Coins. “I wanted to interrupt the negativity and spread something positive to remind people that we are all humans and connected at the end of the day,” she said. “I noticed that when I completed acts of kindness it seemed to make a larger impact, because people weren’t expecting it.” She emphasized, “Even if we don’t agree, we can all agree on spreading kindness.” While technology is often criticized for disconnecting people, in this case it’s being used to help spread goodwill and track just how much that kindness ripples. Looking on the website proves that these coins have been given and received all over the United States, from Los Angeles to New York City. “I was trying to think of a way to make a bigger impact,” Morgan said, “I thought if people could track their act of kindness and get updates on where it went, it would encourage even more acts of kindness.” The beauty of kindness is that anyone can do it, and for each person, acts of kindness will look different. There are several ways to use Kindness Coins, but acts of kindness can always be done without the coins. The entire purpose is to put positivity out into the world, which is easy for anyone to do at any time. For some people, kindness comes in the form of giving gifts or kind words, especially when they are unexpected. Kindness can be as simple as holding a door open or grabbing something off the top shelf for someone who can’t reach it. It can also be a form of generosity, such as paying for the coffee of the person behind you. Morgan started Kindness Coins as a way to connect us as human beings, and as a way to pay kindness forward. While it comes in many different forms, kindness is an investment with a 100% return.

BOISE MURAL HONORS CHAMPIONS
ARTICLE BY JORDAN GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUSS STODDARD
If you head down an alleyway in Boise, you’re just as likely to find a gorgeous mural as you are a ubiquitous puddle. That’s certainly the case if you head behind the Oliver Russell building on 11th Street, now reimagined as Inspiration Alley. Done in shades of black, white, gray, and tan, Maya Moore, Colin Kaepernick, Dolores Huerta, and Malala Yousafzai peer out at passerby. The massive public art is the brainchild of Russ Stoddard. Stoddard is the founder and president of branding agency Oliver Russell, whose clients include the City of Boise, the Smithsonian, and Nature Valley. “We have an office building in downtown that’s on a fairly busy path,” he said. “Fifteen to seventeen years ago, we put up a mural on the south-facing wall: The I Love You Man. It’s an image of a bodybuilder and it says ‘I LOVE YOU’ under that. It taught me the power of murals as an emotional communication tool.” The idea for a new mural came to Stoddard around four years ago. “I said, ‘We need to do something on the alley.’ One day during the pandemic, I decided, ‘It’s time.’” Stoddard enlisted the services of Sector Seventeen, an artist collective focused on murals. “I’d always had them in mind for this,” he said of artists Collin Pfeifer and Hawk Sahlein. “So, when the time came, I booked a slot on their schedule, and we did it.” The first Inspiration Alley installment, which went up September 2020, featured Kaepernick and Moore. Stoddard said the installment went over well in the community and inspired the second installment, which went up October 2020. “Dolores Huerta was one of the leaders of the United Farm Workers movement, and also is a big advocate for women’s rights. And Malala Yousafzai, who is a Nobel Prize winner, is a leading advocate for education and women’s rights.” CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / BO I S E

The message behind the mural is simple. “There are inspirational people out there in the world who put their values into place through action, even if there’s sacrifice required, and we all benefit from those actions ultimately,” Stoddard said. More faces are coming to Inspiration Alley. Stoddard said there’s still space on the Oliver Russell building, and he’s in discussions with other building owners to expand the mural down the block. “(Inspiration Alley is) destined to become a landmark that Boise will value and love alongside the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial, Freak Alley, and other places like that.” As for who else might grace Inspiration Alley? Stoddard said that’s still up in the air. “I’ve been keeping a list of them for an awfully long time,” Stoddard said. “Most of them have a strong track record that’s verifiable for the work they have done. For the first go, it was just motivated by visibility of the people. I also wanted to highlight women. So, there’s three women and one man. And I wanted them to be people of color to start out. That doesn’t mean that we won’t be including in future installments people who are white, but I wanted to give a shoutout to people of color to start with.” Stoddard does plan to let others make an impact on the project though. “We have a next phase slated for springtime and we’re going to do crowdfunding to hopefully get the community involved.” If you’d like to contribute, information will be posted on oliverrussell. com when the campaign goes live. “I love (public art),” Stoddard said. “It really does wonders for the character of a city.”

Febr u a r y Giving flowers to others or ourselves is sharing the gift of pure love
There is a connection between flowers and positive emotions. Flowers enhance moods as well as our homes, and make us feel lighter and happier which in turn make us feel connected to the earth and ultimately to one another. For centuries they have been used as a medium for expressing one’s love or gratitude as well as holding space for all of life’s celebrations. Studies have shown that people who are given a large bunch of flowers feel happier than those who are given money; patients recover more quickly in hospitals when flowers are present; diners order more food and drink in restaurants decorated with flowers; and a good mood lingers for three days after receiving flowers for any reason or no reason. There are lots of ways to use flowers as a way to feel and share love. By adding just a few pops of flowers throughout your home you can instantly change the ambiance! During the late months of winter this can really help keep spirits high. Make it a point to add fresh orchids to your nightstand. Orchids look like a soft sculpture more than a floral arrangement, and their color and fragrance improves a bedroom’s ambiance. For your dining table, fill a vase full of evergreens, leaves, or grasses. Tulips are often associated with the spring; however, their season actually begins in the winter. They have the ability to transform any room with their elegant and loose beauty. A single vibrant gerbera daisy makes a playful addition to a kitchen or bathroom, or create a gorgeous bouquet with daisies surrounded by roses and mums. While red roses are traditional for Valentine’s Day, take some purple inspiration from the amethyst, February’s birthstone. Mix a purple hydrangea with lavender roses for an unexpected take on the usual arrangement. Planting flowers in your garden is another way to share their beauty, and you get the benefit of foraging in your own flowerbed. Here in Idaho, as the first blooms begin to bud in late February and early March, you’ll find forsythia, tulips, daffodils and muscari around the Treasure Valley. Buttercups can often be found in bloom in February in the Boise Foothills. To love and to be loved is really what being human is all about. When enjoying and sharing the magic of nature, our entire being lights up, and we feel more alive, safe and seen. When we give the gift of flowers to others or ourselves, we are giving the gift of pure love. CONTINUED >

HIDDEN PARADISE: A MAGICAL CAMP OF HEALING Sharing profound feelings with others who understand ARTICLE BY LONNI LEAVITT-BARKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAMP RAINBOW GOLD
You probably don’t expect patients to address their doctor at St. Luke’s Pediatric Cancer Institute as “Meeker” or “Chicken Nugget.” But that’s what he answers to every summer when he goes to camp. Dr. Nate Meeker is one of four Pediatric Oncologists in our state. Each summer, all of them spend time helping local nonprofit Camp Rainbow Gold safely take Idaho children to summer camp who have had, or are currently battling, cancer. The children spend time outside and experience hope, healing, love, and what it feels like just to be a kid. “These are kids who live every day with the thought that ‘I could die, I could die from this treatment,’” said Meeker, who has been going to Camp since 2010. “When they talk about Camp, they feel it’s a place they can go and be loved for who they are, and share things that are of profound importance with others who understand.” For nearly 40 years, Camp Rainbow Gold has run oncology camps for children, teens, siblings, and families. Having Dr. Meeker and the others on site is invaluable, as it gives parents the confidence to allow their fragile child to leave home or the hospital for a week. It also allows children to see their doctors in a whole new light. Instead of white coats, antiseptic smells, and artificial lights, they watch their doctors dress up in silly costumes, sing wacky songs, and challenge them to water balloon fights, a dance-off, or a canoe race. “It is such a privilege to get a front row seat at Camp. It is a magical place where truly a lot of healing takes place,” said Meeker.

Dr. Meeker also volunteers as a member of the Camp Rainbow Gold Board of Directors. He is helping oversee the building of Hidden Paradise, the new permanent home for Camp Rainbow Gold in Fairfield, Idaho. The new facility will be the first medically-designed, accessible and adaptable camp that will house Camp Rainbow Gold and other organizations across Idaho serving those with physical, mental or emotional challenges. Just because it’s freezing outside doesn’t mean we have to collectively resign ourselves to giving up on style—it just means we all have to think a bit more creatively when getting dressed in the morning. When the primary motivation is keeping warm while facing dreary days, the temptation is to layer on as many pieces as possible and get out the door. But putting together chic winter looks doesn’t have to be a challenge. Enter The Statement Coat. Throwing it on over anything instantly elevates your style without sacrificing function or fashion during cold weather. The right coat will instantly turn even a minimalist outfit into a head-turner. If you’re like me and *over* the puffer coats that swallow you whole, consider these gorgeous alternatives from Elle M, Robert Comstock, and Salt by Pepper.

creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm i n America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal

and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when

the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept
this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
