As a Native,

I know the Treasure Valley. I know Idaho. “When it came time to sell the home we’ve loved since we building it a decade ago, we wanted someone who’d treated it as the home they loved & “wanted the best for”, too. From the minute I spoke with Ian Brown, I knew he was that professional. Ian’s communication style is clear & so responsive, we always felt in the know & like we were his number one priority. His community reputation is worth gold itself, as when we needed a few items “punched” to get our sale price, Ian arranged quality professionals to make our home ready. He’s also an impeccable planner, so we knew what steps we were on & what was coming next during the whole process, from readying our home for the market to signing our closing docs, again with local professionals. If you want no-stress, high-trust process for the sale or purchase of Treasure Valley real estate, Ian Brown is the best hands you could put yourselves in!” - Kerri M. Eagle, ID

New Year Resolutions

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Vince Gewalt | vince.gewalt@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Kimber Patterson | kimber.patterson@lifestylepubs.com

Some of our most popular New Year’s resolutions center around health and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may revolve around finding ways to help people in need in our city. For me, the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. It’s then a matter of shifting from thinking to making the decision to act. My annual practice of establishing new goals for the coming year is something that helps me focus on what is truly a priority, or at least what should be. Considering how busy life has become, it’s a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where I’ve been, what the past year has taught me, how I want to grow and learn from others. The redesign of our magazine is an action that I’m particularly excited to share with you. Along with a new look for our cover, there are three updated sections providing more community information, QR links to our CityLifestyle.com website, and interactive community maps which you can find on our digital platform. LOCAL EXPERIENCES: Introduced this past summer, this section features locals recommending the best places and things to do in our city. CITY SCENE: We encourage everyone to share their smartphone images of people, places and things happening in their lives and around our city. BUSINESS MONTHLY: This roundup highlighting exciting news from our business community will keep you in the know. Wherever you are during your Idaho adventures this year, be sure to take Boise Lifestyle magazine along with you. Tag @BoiseLifestyle on social media and use #BoiseLifestyle to share all the things you love about our city and the Gem State. Our special January issue is dedicated to health and wellness, stressing the importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit. My hope is that your New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Thank you to our valued partners and readers. Here’s to your healthy and happy 2022!

Boise Among Top 10 Smaller Metros Gaining the Most Population The U.S. Census Bureau’s latest data on metro-to-metro migration trends, and CommercialCafe’s analysis on the largest metros in the U.S. found that the biggest hotspots for population inflow are still mostly concentrated in the Sun Belt. However, while the largest metros in the U.S. see the largest absolute numbers of residents gained, some smaller metro areas like Boise (under 1 million residents) has also witnessed considerable growth thanks to a similar set of factors: They offer more affordability compared to local or regional population centers, while also showing great potential for job hunters, commuters and retirees alike. 2022: THE YEAR YOU OWN YOUR LIFE ARTICLE BY SHANE & NATALIE PLUMMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MADELINE ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY + PROVIDED

WE USUALLY MARK THE NEW YEAR WITH RESOLUTIONS, BUT THIS YEAR WE’RE MOVING A BIT BEYOND THAT

When we find ourselves approaching a new year, we often talk about resolutions and changes, usually something about fitness or health, better habits, or finances. But nearly two years of a global pandemic have changed the tone of personal goals. Global stress has stretched us in new ways and focused us on some different, yet positive things: People are genuinely reevaluating their lives, questioning the status quo, and even wondering if we should blindly accept the definition of the great American dream imposed on us by others. We wanted to address this change in tone on the Boise Bubble Podcast, so we reached out to social media followers to ask what they have learned in the last two years. Dozens of replies confirmed this new theme: the current moment is too important to waste on anything but our highest priorities. Sure, we need to work to support ourselves and our families, but doing so at the expense of ourselves or our tribe isn’t as palatable as it once was. We yearn for community, but a community that wants to define and control? Um, perhaps not this year. The name of the game seems to be to pull closer toward you the people and things you truly love now, spend time with your loved ones now, invest in your passions now, remove toxicity from your life now.

22

FAM ILY CA R E | L IFE + CULTURE

It has been put into high relief that everything can change in a moment. Will we regret the ways we’re choosing to spend our time? Who’s dreams are we striving to achieve? Are those people helping us realize ours in return? Are we investing in people and passions that are most dear to us? Are we making ourselves and those around us better? If not, then perhaps it’s time to recognize that we have choices. More and more frequently we’re seeing people change their life trajectories for the better, choosing careers that mutually benefit each other, strengthening relationships that are precious, loosening their hold on dogma and grudges, and looking inward before judging outwards. In short, people are taking possession of their own lives and realizing they have always had that power. There are real ramifications to this kind of ownership, and we as a society will have to change to accommodate it. Hopefully this change will lead to more introspection, to more acceptance of other’s perspectives, and to better overall life satisfaction. How will you take ownership of your quality of life this year? Shane & Natalie Plummer are hosts of the local podcast @theboisebubble.

4 Easy Ways to Make 2022 Your Best Year Ever Want to make this year different from the rest but don’t even know where to start? I’ve outlined simple ways you can make 2022 your healthiest. You don’t have to do them all on at once, either. Just start implementing one new habit a month, then start adding on when you feel the time is right for you. Keep it manageable and fun – that’s what life is all about! These four tips touch on different areas and aspects of our lives, yet they all play a huge role in our overall health. Other good habits include eating more whole foods and cutting down on sugar, creating a nightly routine to improve sleep, and moving your body on a daily basis. Tackling these areas can really improve our physical and mental health, and our ability to live a life to our fullest capacity. drink more water This is my #1 tip for living your healthiest year ever. Did you know increasing your hydration as little as 3% could result in a 50% increase in productivity? Drinking water helps you feel your best, move your best, and sleep your best. This one simple act to stay properly hydrated improves so much of your health. Keep a re-useable water bottle with you and set hydration timers on your phone to keep you on track.

declutter your space

make time for self-care

minimize screen time

We truly are affected by our surroundings. A cluttered space can create a cluttered mind. When our environment is out of order, we feel out of sorts. Decluttering has the ability to energize, release negative emotions, and create both physical and mental space. By decluttering your desk or your home, you take control of your environment and free yourself to be present and productive. Tidying is not just for esthetics; it is proven to lower stress, increase productivity and provide physical health benefits.

Creating a routine for self-care has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress while improving energy and overall feelings of happiness. Self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant spa days or expensive presents to yourself. It can be drawing an Epsom salt bath in the evening, sipping a cup of tea in a quiet place, reading for pleasure, or having a set hour of alone time. The simple things that help us feel healthy are not a luxury - they are a necessity.

This might seem like a hard one, but we need to spend less time looking at screens and more time enjoying the real life that is happening all around us. Connect with friends and family and stop mindlessly scrolling and comparing yourself to others. Finding joy and gratitude in what’s right in front of you can really help increase self-confidence. Start taking notice of your screen time and create healthy boundaries around technology.

When it comes to winter fun, Boise spoils its residents with Bogus Basin, Idaho Ice World, and its assortment of sledding hills. But only two and a half hours away, Sun Valley opens her arms to we lucky locals. For almost 100 years, this northwest beauty has been a sweet spot for travelers, and even some favorite celebrities. Ernest Hemingway fell in love with the Wood River Valley so deeply that his final resting place is nestled in Ketchum’s loving embrace. Arnold Schwarzenegger is frequently seen visiting the small town; Reese Witherspoon vacations with her family at the lodge; and Clint Eastwood filmed his 1985 film Pale Rider around the Sun Valley’s countryside. It’s the Hollywood of Idaho, except with Tamarack trees instead of metal letters mounted in the hills. It’s also considered “America’s original winter playground,” and we in the Treasure Valley are thankful to have it practically in our backyard. CONTINUED >

For the second year in a row Sun Valley Resort has been voted #1 Best Ski Resort in the country by SKI magazine, but its real success comes from the community they built for us. Limelight Hotel, Sun Valley Lodge, and Knob Hill Inn work together to provide the complete package for visitors with over 400 rooms, 388 snowy acres, 18 restaurants, and much more, all in the heart of Idaho. From November through April, the glistening slopes of Bald and Dollar Mountains call, offering a week or weekend get-away an outdoor lover can only dream of. For Boise locals, the experience is its own homeaway-from-home, enjoying all of Idaho’s offerings and wonders at once. Since 1936, the Sun Valley Resort has been inviting people from all over the country to witness the ski season in its peak environment, and it has continued to evolve the experience for travelers. Winter-fanatics now have over 2,400 acres to ski, Heli-ski, snowshoe, snowboard, tube, and more. There are over a dozen chairlifts for easy accessibility, and little to any lift lines even at famous “Baldy.” Visitors can choose among numerous Nordic trails that weave the forest, and explore the Galena Lodge hidden within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The Resort and Sun Valley itself continues to develop and accommodate the growing number of guests it hosts every year. For first timers, the glistening mountaintops and chilling rushes on the slopes leave them begging to come back again. There’s always something to do in Sun Valley. Anyone can experience it at the base of the mountain range or paragliding over the town’s twinkling lights. Your day will overflow with fun activities, whether in skis or snowmobiles, fly-fishing or riding in horse-drawn carriages, or simply relaxing in the steam of a hot tub or indulging in a spa day. Ketchum’s Main Street is lined with independent businesses that make them unique to the Sun Valley experience, with many local eateries, boutiques, bookstores, and more. The lasting impressions of Sun Valley will fill you for a lifetime, yet living so close means you can experience this beautiful slice of America over and over again.

Expect the best, but plan for the worst, and it usually turns out OK. One month in Europe, mid-pandemic. I can do this, I thought. Madly reviewing requirements to enter Italy, Croatia and Greece in late September 2021, I started questioning why I came up with the crazy idea to travel to three countries with different entry protocols for each one. It all started in early 2021 when I was antsy to travel and had booked a week-long tour to explore Greece in October. I could take friends; so a few hearty and pent-up fellow travelers joined me. However, 7 days didn’t feel long enough after such a long dry spell from travel, so we added another week sailing on a yacht in Croatia, with another few days in Split. As soon as those plans were settled, we received word that Italy had opened! Who else might want to wade into the international travel scene mid-pandemic? Turned out I wasn’t the only one ready for pasta carbonara and a Vespa ride around the Colosseum. Eight of us spent 11 glorious days breezing through an astonishingly empty St. Peter’s Basilica and catching sunsets on the Amalfi Coast.

Yes, there’s a little more paperwork. We wore masks indoors. We carried proof of vaccination. We scheduled tests to come back to the United States. Was it worth it? For me and most of my travel mates, that answer is a resounding “Yes!” Arriving in Rome, my driver friend Gigi greeted me with a cheek-to-cheek kiss-kiss – something I wasn’t sure they still did in a pandemic. It warmed my heart. All the paperwork was worth it right there. “Thank you for coming back to Italy,” he said. “We need visitors to return.” We tasted our way along the coasts of three seas: the Tyrrhenian, Adriatic, and Aegean. We ate the “fresh catch” daily and learned the grapes and wines from countless wine regions between the 36th and 43rd parallel. We drank wine with my vintner friend Gaetano and walked under his trellised 300-year-old vines. His wife served us a delicious meal of lasagna and grilled local sausage to pair with four different wines. CONTINUED >

We enjoyed so many highs, and very few lows. High points included much smaller crowds at the usual tourist spots, excellent food and wine, engaging guides, new languages, and meaningful cultural experiences. The lows were mostly out of our control: cold, windy weather and a really rough ferry ride. Someone might consider the necessary paperwork and testing as a low, but if you do what’s required it really is a breeze. The United States continues to require a negative test result for re-entry. Expect that to be in place until COVID-19 numbers decrease dramatically around the world. People in every country thanked us for traveling. “It’s a long way for Americans to come, especially under current conditions,” said Mirjana, our charming Croatian guide. “We appreciate that so much.” We left enriched by new friendships, new experiences, and more food than we ever eat in a day. TREASURE VALLEY LEGEND MARK JOHNSON RETIRES FROM KTVB

44

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

JUST SAYIN’ MARK JOHNSON Mark Johnson has been gracing Treasure Valley television screens since the early 1980s. Now retired, the KTVB legend took time to reflect on three decades of memories and what’s next.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS? I’ll never forget getting the main anchor chair in 2004 and then being sent to Washington, D.C. to cover Dirk Kempthorne’s confirmation hearings as nominee for Secretary of the Interior. I remember doing live shots in front of the U.S. Capitol and the White House thinking, “Only four months ago I was in costume doing an imitation of Coach Dan Hawkins for the Halloween edition of Sports Extra, and now I’m in D.C. covering one of Idaho’s biggest news stories!” It’s been an amazing run: five Olympic trips, three Fiesta Bowls, three season-opening Boise State football games in D.C. and Atlanta, countless pre- and post-game shows, and so many other trips to cover news in Idaho.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS ABOUT THE JOB? It’s such a cliché, but I will miss my family at KTVB the most. They made it fun to come into work every day. I’m so proud and humbled to have been a part of that.

MOST MEMORABLE INTERVIEW? Muhammad Ali. He was in Boise promoting a boxing match and I interviewed him live in 1986.

He came from his hotel room seconds before we went on air and I noticed he had cut himself shaving. I opened with, “Champ, I believe you have more blood on your face right now than in your entire career!” He looked at me and said, “Who are you? The local Howard Cosell?!?” It was magical. I enjoyed interviews with Senator John McCain, Mitt Romney, Michael Jordan, and Wayne Gretzky, but Ali ranks as the biggest moment for me.

BEST CAREER ADVICE? I was told a long time ago to “be myself.” I’ve been fortunate to work with people who are the same off camera as on, and that’s something I always passed along to young journalists. It has gotten me into trouble on occasion, but I always worked to make sure I wasn’t trying to be anyone else but me on TV.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO KEEP ACTIVE DURING RETIREMENT? I love to play golf. My wife and I got a pair of e-bikes and I want to spend long rides with her. We want to travel. We have two daughters in college, a new grandson in Seattle, and want to spend time with them, as well as the rest of our wonderful family. I’m looking forward to continuing my involvement with local nonprofits and all of the exciting things they are doing in the community. I’m also looking forward to trying my hand in new “adventures” -- whatever they might be! CONTINUED >

ANY FUN ANECDOTES TO SHARE? The viral thing that happened to me was a kick and something I still don’t understand. (In 2021, an automated tweet accidentally went out from KTVB’s Twitter account with Johnson’s headshot and ‘Mark Johnson’ as the only text.) It was fun hearing from Jimmy Fallon, Ellen, and Stephen Colbert, who had a field day with it.

FINAL THOUGHTS? I am just so thankful to have had a career with absolutely no regrets. And one that has now allowed me to give attention to my wife who has been so supportive of every move I’ve made. I’m looking forward to returning the favor. I’m also thankful for the viewers who treated me like a friend whenever they met me. I always felt so welcomed and I won’t ever forget that.

This can also be achieved at home (SPM Wire).”

A hair-healthy diet can promote hair growth and shine. Be sure your diet includes vitamins and nutrients like iron, biotin, protein and vitamins A and C. Eat a wide range of whole fruits and vegetables and good-for-you sources of protein and iron, such as lentils, nuts and fish.

A toning gloss is suitable for all hair types and textures, including color-treated and natural hair. Glossing enhances color and tone, boosts shine and deeply conditions in one step. Distribute gloss through clean, damp hair all the way through the ends, leave on for 5-15 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with water.

While warm water works best for washing hair, you should always rinse with cold water. This is because cold water helps to seal the cuticles that were just opened to reflect light better and give your hair a healthy-looking shine.

TALKIN’ NFL WITH MARIA PREKEGES

Maria Prekeges

CONTINUED >

JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / BO I S E

If you’re a sports fan, chances are good you’ve spotted Maria Prekeges on TV. She’s covered everything from rugby to rodeo for networks like ESPNU. Now, she’s turning her focus to the NFL with a new podcast. Boise Lifestyle got her away from the microphone for a few minutes to talk about the new venture.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BEYOND THE LOCKER ROOM WITH MARIA? I always wanted to cover football. When the pandemic hit, I found myself out of work. I kept seeing openings for podcasters, and then one popped up I knew I had to get: a football podcaster for Bleav. It is a podcast, but I also put each episode on my YouTube channel. Find it on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.

WHAT CAN LISTENERS EXPECT? The first segment is all about what’s going on in the NFL for the week. I enlisted the help of my good friend Trevor Thomas, as he follows the NFL like nobody’s business. We have a ball discussing all things NFL past, present, and future. That section is T-Bone’s Take. Then I move to Beyond the Locker Room. That’s where I interview people on how football has affected their lives, from players (past and present), to coaches, fans, and more. I end the podcast with Maria’s Minute, where I get to talk about anything I want. I try to end on a positive note each week, as that’s how I try and always live my life: glass half full.

56

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

ANY SNEAK PEAKS INTO UPCOMING GUESTS? The guest list is filled with amazing people. I have some big goals, especially in the offseason where more current players and coaches will have more time. Let’s just say you will want to continue to listen, as you never know who might show up.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SPORTS STORY? I love the memory of Sunday afternoons growing up. We’d crowd around the TV with my dad and watch football all day. That’s really how I got into the sport, and it was precious time with a father who worked a lot.

ANY SUPER BOWL PREDICTIONS? Ah, the old prediction game. It’s been such a strange season so far. There are always unexpected upsets, drama, and more. This year especially, there seemed to be frontrunners, but then the league got all turned around, so predicting who will be in Super Bowl LVI? That’s a tough one. I’ll say who I’d like to see. For the NFC, I’d love to see the Arizona Cardinals, although I think it might be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For the AFC, I’d love to see the Baltimore Ravens.

FAVORITE TEAM? It’s funny to say, but I really do just love watching the NFL, all teams. But let’s be honest, everyone does have a favorite. Growing up in Spokane, Washington, we always rooted for the Seattle Seahawks, and I continue to do so.

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

60

S ELF CA R E | FITNESS

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
