The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. SONNY CABBAGE BRINGS SANTA EXPERIENCE TO DEAF CHILDREN

Santa Claus brings joy to children the world over. A lot of factors lend themselves to the jolly man’s appeal, but one important one is his ability as a polyglot—one able to communicate with children in their own language, whether spoken, written, or signed. For Sonny Cabbage, born deaf, his first experience with Santa didn’t include that easy conversation about what he wanted for Christmas and whether he’d been good. “My parents and brother are deaf,” he said. “Before my parents took me and my brother to see Santa Claus at a local mall, my mom had us write down what we wanted to get for Christmas on a piece of paper to take to Santa. We sat on his lap, gave him the wish list note, posed for pictures, then received a candy cane in return. That was very much our Santa experience growing up. No communications at all.” The experience stayed with Cabbage. And around 30 years ago, he got the opportunity to change the narrative for local children. “A family friend, Jill Muir, who worked at the Idaho Educational Services for the Deaf, asked me if I would be interested in being Santa to her students,” he said. “I thought it would be a great opportunity for the deaf kids to experience a Santa Claus that could sign, something I did not have when I was a little kid.” Since that first foray as Kris Kringle, Cabbage has been donning the red suit and providing a unique Santa experience. “I have seen probably the whole gamut of reactions with the deaf kids,” he said. “Some are intimidated by being near this old, fat stranger in the weird red suit with white hair and beard, and end up saying nothing or crying. Other kids are so thrilled to see that Santa can sign with them and can’t stop talking. Some are very shy and give only one- or two-word answers. “When I’m being Santa Claus for the deaf kids, I enjoy communicating with them, asking if they were a good/bad kid, what they want for Christmas, etc. I think it means a lot to the deaf kids that they can communicate directly with Santa Claus. I believe that makes Christmas more meaningful to them.” Cabbage added, “I have occasionally had some hearing children of deaf adults (CODA) whose primary language at home is American Sign Language.” Assisting Cabbage in his Santa duties is the person who first got him into the gig. “Jill Muir has been my elf all those years,” Cabbage said. “She interprets the dialogue between the deaf child and me for their parents who are usually hearing (no hearing loss) and sometimes for those deaf children who have minimal signing capabilities and rely more on vocal communications.”

The 57-year-old has a lot of communication experience with both deaf and hearing people. “Growing up deaf in an all-deaf family and in Gooding (where there is a lot of deaf exposure to the general public), I never really felt any different from anybody else, deaf or hearing. Communications with the hearing people was the only speed bump we had to deal with—for us to talk with the hearing people, as well as for the hearing people to talk with us. Everything else, we were all on the same footing.” When not embodying the cheerful old elf, Cabbage can be found working as an Idaho Power Environmental Analyst, which he’s done for more than 30 years; spending time with his family; and serving on the board at the Idaho Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

If you’re interested in visiting “Sonny” Claus, check the Idaho Educational Services for the Deaf website at iesdb.org. “We started out doing the Signing Santa event at the Boise Towne Square mall for several years, but since then we have done it at the elementary schools where there is a deaf program, such as Ponderosa Elementary School in Meridian,” Cabbage said. As for why Cabbage has continued to pull on his son’s old Halloween costume (for a proper ‘bowl full of jelly’) and the red suit for nearly three decades? “It never fails to set me in the Christmas mood,” he said. “Sometimes I think I have more fun than the kids. The most important thing to me is that those deaf kids have the opportunity to communicate directly with Santa and have the equal Santa Claus experience as those kids who can hear and see those Santa Clauses at the mall.”

Sicily! It’s a glorious place to visit in the fall and winter—light crowds, shortsleeve weather, and more cultural experiences than you can imagine. As the days shorten in Boise and winter hints at its arrival, we dream of warmer and sunnier climes. I encourage you to think outside the “tropical” box and consider this island paradise. Sicily, Italy’s largest island, which geographically is the flat soccer ball off the toe of the boot, is the southern-most point in the country and it is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea with Tunisia to the west and Athens to the east.

When I visited, we had just missed the 70-degree days and were hit with a windy cold front. I was never so happy to have packed my puffy coat on a whim. In the Treasure Valley, we hover on the 43rd parallel. Combined with our elevation, we get a cold and stormy winter. Sicily lies between latitudes of 37 and 38. For perspective, Santa Cruz, California, and Bowling Green, Kentucky, are also on the 37th. The North African winds bring warm air and, over centuries, many cultural influences with boatloads of hopeful rulers and immigrants arrived. We saw it in the Valley of Temples at Agrigento, the architecture in Palermo and the rich Sicilian foods throughout the island. Like everything in Sicily, the cuisine is a combination of cultures, seasons and what’s currently ripe in the garden. We ate swordfish baked with

capers, Pasta alla Norma—and many other eggplant dishes, and the ubiquitous cannoli desserts that are as delicious as they are beautiful. The options are varied and fabulous. I recall—and have since re-created several times—a fresh winter salad of orange sections, sliced fennel, and Sicilian olives. It sounds like a crazy combination, but it was divine. Sicily is a true cross-section of cultures, according to my guide-friend Masha. “Throughout its history, it was ruled by Moors and Arabs who brought cultivation, sugarcane, and pistachios. Before that the Greeks and Romans built their baths and temples,” she said. The melting pot is evident in the architecture, cuisine, art and even the language. Sicily is huge, and there is much to see at all points of the island. Let’s look to the east/southeast near Catania and Syracuse. CONTINUED >

To stand in the fish market in Catania is a feast for the senses. Endless tables topped with bins of fish and seawater. Shrimp, octopus, squid, and clams; customers clamoring to decide their dinner plan or the restaurant’s daily special. It’s colorful, loud and smells just like it should: fishy. In the southern city of Syracuse, we saw firsthand the depth of history in the quaint island neighborhood of Ortigia. We strolled the magnificent white piazza, completely in awe. The Cathedral of Syracuse, in its grand Baroque glory, is a perfect example of historical layers. Visible in the walls of the cathedral, you can still see—and touch—the ancient columns of a Greek temple to Athena built 2,500 years ago. Masha explained that the columns were used as structural support for the “new” cathedral in the 7th century and remained in place when it was rebuilt in the 1600s. You can still see the columns both inside and outside the cathedral, along with enormous statues and other ornate Baroque styling. We stayed on the bustling pedestrian-only piazza and enjoyed an aperitivo. The free entertainment included kids playing soccer, grandparents pushing strollers, and families going to dinner. Above Catania, Mount Etna still puffs smoke regularly. Its rich volcanic soils have proven exceptional for growing grapes. We strolled the Murgo vineyard on the slopes of the volcano and sat down for a seven-course-withseven-wines lunch. Sicily is big that way. We cruised Taormina’s checkerboard piazza overlooking the sea and we also climbed stairs in the ancient Greek

amphitheater that is still used today. The Greeks and Romans were incredible engineers and they clearly had an appreciation for the view of the sea. On my list for next time is a famed landmark in Caltagirone: the 142-step monumental Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte. It was built in the early 1600s to connect the old part of town with the new development down below. Considering that it’s equivalent to the height of a ten-story building, it was named one of the most beautiful staircases in the world with the face of each step decorated with different hand-painted ceramic tiles.

You can’t go wrong when you go long...on tradition! Family members don’t tinker much with time-honored holiday recipes. Do you really want to be the one that tells Aunt Tilly to try some bourbon in her pecan pie? (Maybe next year.) In our family, there are about 8 recipes that you don’t change, but there’s a great appreciation for creativity and new dishes. And then we play with the wines on these holiday tables. No doubt, there will be Champagne, Riesling, Rosé, Beaujolais, Pinot Noir, and dessert wine surrounding our Thanksgiving table. Here’s our top 12 list of holiday favorites. Maybe you have these same wines on your table, maybe there will be some fun new ones to try. Marie-Pierre Manciat Cremant De Bourgogne $31. French Cremant delivers the Champagne experience at a fraction of the cost. This is so good we drink it year-round. Crowd Pleaser #1, raise a glass. Live long and prosper. Then, we offer a smorgasbord of white and rosé wines. This is one of those rare moments when a lot of different wines can all share the same counter space and offer something for everyone. Why does this work? It does seem overwhelming, but there’s not just 3 things on your plate to pair with wine. On average you might fill 2 plates of food with about 10 different dishes. This calls for a sophisticated shotgun approach to the wines, so smother your guests with wine choices. With this lineup of wines, there’s a strong chance that one will be quite good with the green bean casserole. All of them are good with turkey. We’re all in the same gravy boat. Here’s a selection of red wine that is well-suited for flavors like cranberry sauces, roasted vegetables and umami-rich gravy. Granger “Aux Pierres” Chenas Beaujolais , France. $25. Deep Blue, Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon $32. Petalos del Bierzo, Spain, $24 Lower tannin wines don’t fight most of the food on the table and crisp acidity is a good pair in cutting through fattier foods. Plus, these are good wines to pair with game, ham and poultry. The Beaujolais works well with roasted vegetables, sauces and gravies. The Spanish Mencia pairs nicely with glazed ham and bread dressings. And Pinot Noirs’ food versatility is exceptional. Got prime rib on the menu? Eric Chevalier Cardinal, Cabernet Franc, France, $24. Dude DeWalt Sheepdog, Bordeaux Blend, Idaho. $44. Achaval Ferrer Quimera, Malbec $42 Beef and Cabernet...truly one of the great matchups in culinary history. Dessert is a formidable assignment for wine. It’s an easier assignment for a decaf cappuccino. But, Ruby and Tawny Ports seems to fair well. A chill is in the air and there is an unmistakable scent of snow. It’s official: winter is here! And it’s no mistake that Idaho, where the world’s first chairlift debuted, is home to some wonderful snow skiing. If you’re planning a visit to Sun Valley, Tamarack, or Brundage, some fun upgrades will make your time swooshing down the mountain more enjoyable.

TAMARACK RESORT At Tamarack Resort, a newly renovated snow front and improvements in the resort’s direct-to-snow experience mean you’ll hit the slopes faster. The snow front now offers RFID-enabled ski check and heated lockers with boot and helmet dryers. Guests can also upgrade to ski-in, ski-out parking via gates synced to Tamarack’s Boundless Pass. Tamarack has kept the prices of its Boundless Pass options the same this year. Additionally, it unveiled the Boundless Teacher Pass: a year-round pass for Idaho’s K-12 public school teachers for $299. “We’re dedicated to giving back to our community and expanding access to skiing and riding in Idaho’s mountains,” Tamarack Marketing and Operations Vice President Wolfe Ashcraft said. On the runs, in addition to miles of new snowmaking lines, Tamarack also installed six new automated snow guns.

season, a new high-speed lift will cut the ride time from 14 minutes to 6. On the runs, you’ll see improved grooming from Brundage’s two new snowcats. The equipment will allow the Brundage Terrain Park crew to offer more features and improved freestyle skiing and snowboarding. A new, two-story first aid building will serve as the permanent home of Brundage Mountain’s Ski and Bike Patrol. The facility includes additional bed space and improved privacy and ambulance accessibility. It’s the first step in the expanded base area plan, which will add 30,000 square feet of new and remodeled facilities over the next two to three years. “We have both ambitious plans for the base area and high standards for the experience we offer our guests,” Brundage General Manager Ken Rider said. “We’re taking a lot of care to build the vision in thoughtful phases with minimal disruption of operations and the guest experience.”

The first phase will cover Bald Mountain, with goals for improving skier circulation, increasing accessible skiable terrain, and improving lift and snow quality. As part of this, Challenger Chairlift will be replaced, a new chairlift will replace the Flying Squirrel lift (destroyed by fire in 2014), and the Flying Squirrel ski trail will be extended. The lifts are intended to open for the 2023-2024 ski season. The Warm Spring Lodge’s patio area will also be expanded. The Bald Mountain Stewardship Project will open up 79 acres of new gladed terrain this season. The project is a first-of-its-kind innovation in resort development and environmental protection. And if you’re a fan of competitive skiers, U.S. Ski & Snowboard will have Sun Valley host the Alpine Skiing National Championships for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. It is easy to get caught up in the whirlwind and forget how to enjoy the season. Often there is family to host, food to prepare, shopping, and parties; it is also hard to find time for yourself. From cookie decorating parties to school performances and exchanging secret Santa gifts with co-workers, the stressors can build up. The key to a joyful holiday season isn’t just advance planning and organization. It starts with taking care of yourself and those around you. Slow down and take time out. Simplify your lists in the order of importance and strategize accordingly. Take a moment to appreciate the season and the blessings surrounding you. Say yes to what fills your bucket, like placing self-care on your to-do list. To help, we have a few ideas for a little pampering yourself for the holidays. hair so that we can avoid your hair feeling stripped of oils and moisture. If you are getting extensions, be sure to book your appointment in advance of events and parties that you are attending, as it takes 24-48 before you may wash the new extensions.

3. HOW ABOUT GIFT IDEAS? I.E., GIFT CERTIFICATES OR SALON MERCHANDISE. We sell top-of-the-line Kevin Murphy and Unite products for both men and women. We offer a wide array of options, including oils, smooth and shine treatments, straightening and relaxing styling fluid, styling tools, and shampoo plus conditioners for every hair type! With all the extra entertaining, it’s a great idea to pay attention to often overlooked areas, like the oven, refrigerator, microwave, and bathrooms. We also provide extra organization in the coat or linen closets and pantries. Merry Maids also provides other types of cleaning services, like polishing silver. Just ask if you have any special requests that you aren’t sure we cover. We might be able to add that to our services.

2. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR THE CLEANER’S ARRIVAL? Pick up items and put away what you can. Clear off counters as much as possible; this will allow our team to focus on cleaning as opposed to spending their time preparing an

area to be cleaned. Pick up toys, clothing, and other items off the floor to help vacuum and clean the floors. Make sure that pets are secured so they aren’t underfoot. If at all convenient, most house occupants should either leave or go to an area of the home that won’t interfere with the cleaning process. Make a list of items you’d like addressed so that the cleaners know your specific areas of concern. If you have specific products that you would like to use, make sure that you have them available for the cleaners.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
