"FOR PIXIE" ARRIVES ON BALLET IDAHO'S STREAMING PLATFORM Ballet Idaho recently released its first digital performance of the year: "For Pixie" by Danielle Rowe. The show is an intimate duet danced on a stage full of shadows and set to the music of Nina Simone. "For Pixie" has the distinction of being the first piece the now world-renowned choreographer Rowe ever created. It is also uniquely personal as it's inspired by the love that Rowe's grandparents shared for one another. As Rowe described it, "They couldn't live with each other, but couldn't live away from each other." According to Ballet Idaho, the performances of Ballet Idaho Principal Dancer Adrienne Kerr and Company Dancer Justin Hughes bring a new layer of intensity to the piece. The work done by Ballet Idaho’s film partner, FrontRunner Films, enhances that intensity. As Kerr described it, “The filming pro-

Concrete Concerns?

Don’t Let Waiting Cost You. by

We Offer a 3-Part Concrete Protection System:

PolyLevel™: Concrete Leveling • NexusPro: Crack Repair • SealantPro: Waterproofing Seal

CONCRETE RAISING & LEVELING

CRACK & JOINT REPAIR

SURFACE PROTECTION

PolyLevel™ is an environmentally friendly, strong high-density polyurethane foam that is injected underneath concrete slabs through tiny ports about the size of a dime. PolyLevel™ raises sunken areas and compacts the soil underneath. It cures quickly and will not degrade over time.

NexusPro is a silicone-based sealant for joints and cracks preventing water from flowing underneath the concrete slab. Specially formulated against harsh weather conditions, NexusPro resists UV rays: it won’t crack, bubble, or dry out. A single application can protect your concrete for years to come.

SealantPro is a state-of-the-art waterproofing seal that prevents water from seeping into the pores of concrete, permanently protecting it from water, dirt and other contaminants in a single coat. Once applied, SealantPro dries in minutes and is fully cured in just 6 hours.

MASTER BATH SANCTUARY 6 STEPS ON HOW TO ADORN YOUR BATHROOM

OF THE MANY JOYS OF DECORATING, NONE ARE AS SATISFYING AS THE SMALL CHANGES THAT MAKE A BIG IMPACT.

The wide range of

styles and themes you can adopt to change your bath are only limited by your personal style. From chic boho to sleek contemporary, it’s easy to create a world of our own in our bath. A beautiful neutral backdrop with soft colors allows you to create cottage, coastal and modern themes, while the use of color and floral patterns opens the door to eclectic, Moroccan and boho chic. Think of your favorite hotel, or a hotel where you hope to stay someday. What accouterments do they utilize to create the ambiance that makes the experience feel luxurious? Try incorporating some of those elements in your bathroom. The fun part about decor is that you can truly allow your personality to shine through in how you choose to adorn your space.

ITEM ONE. Put your favorite flowers in a vase by the sink. You can even tailor your flower selection to the seasons or by color or theme. Accessorizing your bath with beloved objects, small luxury rugs, or framed artwork creates an entirely different atmosphere. These details elevate your space to a perfect ambiance.

ITEM TWO.

FE ATURES

These days couples usually prefer two sinks for one simple reason: we lead busy lives and need access to the bathroom at the same time. For a streamlined looked, wall-mounted faucets are gorgeous and practical as they create more countertop space. Plenty of storage below ensures there’s plenty of space for trays of accessories and products on top.

ITEM THREE. Candles and candleholders exist for every style and sensibility, so personalize yours with flair. Candles in different colors, shapes, and heights look classy, not random and disorganized, when sitting on a pretty tray that also will contain dripping wax.

ITEM FOUR.

Finding your ideal line of beauty products may take some trial and error, but the effort will simplify your life in the long run. Plus, the bottles and jars will look perfect when grouped together in your bathroom. Spas choose one line and stick to it for ease, and because the ingredients and fragrance usually complement one another.

ITEM FIVE. Not all towels are created equal. And if you have chil-

dren at home, you may have an overabundance of towels with cartoon characters. Purchase towels that are just for you, but go for a distinctive vibe. Instead of terrycloth, you could go with linen. Instead of pastels, go for muted tones, or a rich jewel tone. Whatever you decide, be sure you’re in love with the design. It should feel special. It is, after all, yours and yours alone.

ITEM SIX. Stone and bare wood may feel a little masculine or even ominous, but a lighter palette and clean design can feel feminine and uplifting. While you may wish to have a new sink installed, you can also think smaller: driftwood is free. You just need to find an artful piece at the beach or riverbank. You can buy or make a stand or lay the driftwood on the counter. 20

Boise Lifestyle | May 2021

CHARTER SCHOOL Charter schools are a form of public school and are free to attend. Still, they are not necessarily available to everyone. They are an alternative option to regular public schools and require enrollment to attend. Charter schools often do not have spaces open for all who’d like to attend, so they generally have an application and lottery process to decide who gets in. This type of school is usually founded around a specific mission or charter, which guides the type of educational experience offered. ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DECISIONS PARENTS

experiences and resources for students. To choose the best school experience for your child, consider your child’s personality and individual needs as well as what’s best for your family as a whole. Keep in mind that what works for one child doesn’t necessarily work for another. When choosing a school, check out your options beforehand and have a clear idea of what factors are most important to you and your child. Also, look for online reviews while bearing in mind that online reviews can be manipulated, such as by offering incentives for reviews. Explore the school website or social media pages to see what they offer, and ask to take a tour or observe a class. Also, speak to parents, students, and teachers about the school you’re considering. The following are the main types of schools

you might consider. Each has various benefits and drawbacks. PUBLIC SCHOOL Public schools are the neighborhood school to which kids are automatically assigned based on where they live. These schools are funded by the government at local, state, and national levels and are held to specified standards. Pros: Because public schools are tied to the government, there is a certain amount of oversight and standards to which they must adhere. All teachers must be certified, follow a set of standards that students are expected to meet, and use an approved curriculum. Public schools are free and available to all students. They typically offer the broadest range of extracurricular activities, from sports to music and theater and much more.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Religious schools are another type of private school associated with a particular religion or organization. A parochial school is a type of religious school that is connected directly to a local church. Pros: If your family is closely aligned with a particular religion, a religious school can involve that aspect of your life in your child’s education. These schools usually have strong community and smaller class sizes. VIRTUAL SCHOOLS Technology has led to the availability of virtual or online schools. There are both public and private virtual

access to specialized classes.

If your child has special educational needs, there are schools available for students with hearing or vision impairments, autism, and specific intellectual or learning disabilities. Pros: Curriculum and instruction are adapted to best meet the needs of the students attending the school, and teachers are specially trained to work well with the population served. These schools have a sense of community, and students can relate to one another. PRIVATE SCHOOL Private schools are not funded by the government, and therefore students must pay tuition to attend. They also are not held to the same regulations as public schools. Often, private schools have a specific focus or educational philosophy, such as Montessori or Waldorf schools. Pros: Since parents pay the tuition, they often get more input on their child’s education. Families can find a school that is more aligned with their wants or beliefs. Also, class sizes are usually smaller.

24

Boise Lifestyle | May 2021

Ultimately, the right school choice is different for each family. So it’s essential to explore the available options to find the best fit. If a school situation isn’t working for your child or family, consider transferring or try something different.

CRISTY CODE RED PULLING NO PUNCHES (CONTINUED)

“I LIVE WITH THE IDEA THAT YOU SHOULD BE KIND TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON YOU MEET, AND STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE.” When asked if she would consider herself a role model, she hesitated for a moment before answering. “If one girl looks at me and thinks that I’m a cool chick and if I inspire her in some way, then yes, I would say I’m a role model,” she humbly replied. Cristy also never forgets her roots. She began as a 4-H girl, raising steer and pigs to sell at the county fair to raise money to pay for her first car. From her hard work and tenacity, Cristy now embraces her success as a platform to be an outspoken supporter of the 4-H and other organizations like Chrysalis, a women’s halfway house. She seeks out local organizations that she can support to give back to the community that she feels has given her so much. “I live with the idea that you should be kind to every single person you meet, and strive for excellence.” As a young girl, Cristy’s mother taught her there was nothing she couldn’t achieve, turning the phrase “I can’t” to “I can.” The powerhouse she is today is the result of those early teachings and her desire to help others. This is evident in her day-to-day life as a woman who walks the walk; she doesn’t just talk.

nell shipman: pioneer in film

MORE

THAN

A

DECADE

BEFORE

FILM STARS STARTED FLOCKING TO SUN VALLEY IN THE 1930S, A YOUNG HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS NAMED NELL SHIPMAN LEFT THE SILENT MOVIE BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA FOR THE REMOTE SHORES AND SURROUNDING MOUNTAINS OF PRIEST LAKE. But unlike the 1930s glitterati, she wasn’t seeking a glamorous get-away. She came to Idaho to lead her own independent film company with a cast of actors that included her “zoo” of more than 70 wild animals. To say the least, Nell was a woman with big dreams and the determination to make them happen. Shipman’s professional acting career began when she was cast in a theatrical touring company in 1905 at the age of thirteen. She earned fame as a silent film star

when she landed the leading role in the successful 1916 feature, God’s Country and the Woman. Despite the Hollywood studio offers that followed, Nell ultimately chose to strike out on her own. In 1919, she established Nell Shipman Productions with the mission of making films according to her own creative vision. As producer, writer, and star, Nell led her company to Minnehaha Studios in Spokane to shoot her film The Grub Stake in 1922. When studio filming wrapped, they moved on to Priest Lake for the film’s outdoor scenes, and it was there that Shipman decided to set down her cinematic roots. Years later she described her immediate emotional response to the landscape: “Did you ever come to a place and instantly recognize it as…the one spot in all God’s world where you belonged…Such a spot, so it seemed to me, was Priest Lake, in Idaho… Seeing it was not a case of love at first sight, it was the re-uniting of self with homeland. This was my country. This, the proper setting for my pictures about God’s country.” The Shipman company lived in Priest Lake for two and a half years, and eventually built a movie studio camp that Nell named Lionhead Lodge. From 1923-1924 the company shot a

series of five short films, collectively titled Little Dramas of The Big Places. With Priest Lake as her backdrop, Nell was free to make her Little Dramas using all the elements of her signature style: on-location filming in wilderness landscapes, stunts performed by the star herself, and plotlines that made the heroine the rescuer of the hero.

NELL SHIPMAN: PIONEER IN FILM (CONTINUED)

The Little Dramas featured Priest Lake locals as well as performers from Shipman’s own menagerie of wild animals. Nell was devoted to working with animals respectfully after witnessing repeated inhumane treatment of animal actors on film sets in Hollywood. “I made up my mind…that somehow I would get my own wild animal cast and make actors of them,” she wrote, “without the use of whips, shouted commands, charged wires poked into them, or by boring them with tiresome training.” Nell’s successful bonding approach is revealed in her Idaho films with co-starring dogs, bobcats, and bears. By 1925, the effects of a changing film industry created a financial strain that Nell’s small independent outfit couldn’t overcome. Shipman left Idaho and never returned. But in her autobiography written shortly before her death in 1970, she Nell with animal actor "Brownie"

remembered Priest Lake as the place where she achieved her artistic ideals while remaining true to her independent spirit. Next year marks the 100th anniversary of Nell’s arrival in Idaho—a timely occasion to celebrate her pioneering efforts in the early film industry and her artistic legacy where the heroine always saves the day.

Each day forward, we came together to speak out, march hand in hand, support, love and honor each other. There are countless women who are remembered for their efforts that helped women’s success of today. Because of so many Idaho women, I am where I am today from their support, love, courage and honor. I celebrate you, and all women in Idaho. Keep striving, keep celebrating, keep honoring. We at 44º North Vodka salute each of you with a special cocktail called The LADY SLIPPER. It was created by staff at the Duchin Lounge at Sun Valley Resort. The Lady Slipper, also known as a moccasin flower, is a perennial wild orchid. Artists, Rising ASHLEY DREYFUS (@DREYFUS.ART), WINNER OF THE 2020 PABST BLUE RIBBON ART CAN CONTEST

ARTICLE GREG GEWALT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

AFTER RECEIVING OVER 4000 SUBMISSIONS, PABST BLUE RIBBON NAMED BOISE ARTIST ASHLEY DREYFUS THE WINNER OF THEIR 2020 PABST BLUE RIBBON ART CAN CONTEST. WHEN DID YOU START DRAWING AND DEVELOP YOUR UNIQUE STYLE? I have been drawing pretty much since I could pick up a pencil. Cartooning has always been my main style. Three years ago I decided to start a 365 drawing a day challenge in which I draw and post a new piece of art every day. This practice has really solidified my art style and characters. My characters that I call Alter Egos are just humans in their most natural form, with no gender, who are living their lives without judgement. WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR SUBMITTING TO THE 2020 PABST BLUE RIBBON ART CAN CONTEST? It has always been a goal of mine to see my art and style represented on merchandise such as t-shirts and posters. The PBR art can contest really challenged me to create a piece of art based on peoples’ lifestyle during the pandemic. I wanted to create a visual of people staying home and enjoying themselves during this last year. WHAT’S NEXT IN YOUR ART CAREER? Mural painting is one of my huge passions, and I hope to travel and seek out new venues and opportunities to participate in public art projects. My dream in my art career is to meet other artists and share ideas and meaningful collaborations with them. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE AND WHY? Some of my inspirations in life and art include Hayao Miyazaki, Peter Max and Keith Haring. 60

DREAM BIG BRITISH ITALIAN GERMAN (BIG) MOTORS, A MOTHER & SON EUROPEAN AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR FACILITY NOW OPEN IN BOISE

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT WOMEN INFLUENCE THE PURCHASE OF 40% OF THE TRUCKS, AND 80% OF ALL VEHICLES IN THE UNITED STATES. Women also buy the majority of all new and used cars. It is estimated that close to 80% of all auto service and maintenance responsibilities – from oil changes to major repairs – are arranged, dropped off, and picked up by women. In 2020 Julie Iffla took things a step further. With her son Zach Shipsey, they opened their own state-of-the art European automotive repair facility, British Italian German Motors (BIG Motors). It all started in 2017 with a BIG vision and the purchase of a residence with a one acre parcel on 10152 W State Street near Hwy 55. Zach is an experienced ASE Master Certified Tech and manages the repair and maintenance business. The dynamic mother and son entrepreneurs have taken a BIG idea and spent the past three years building out most of the facility themselves. Despite the global pandemic they have persevered, and their entrepreneurial goal of servicing all European vehicles and exotics has come to fruition.
