As a Native,
I know the Treasure Valley. I know Idaho. “When it came time to sell the home we’ve loved since we building it a decade ago, we wanted someone who’d treated it as the home they loved & “wanted the best for”, too. From the minute I spoke with Ian Brown, I knew he was that professional. Ian’s communication style is clear & so responsive, we always felt in the know & like we were his number one priority. His community reputation is worth gold itself, as when we needed a few items “punched” to get our sale price, Ian arranged quality professionals to make our home ready. He’s also an impeccable planner, so we knew what steps we were on & what was coming next during the whole process, from readying our home for the market to signing our closing docs, again with local professionals. If you want no-stress, high-trust process for the sale or purchase of Treasure Valley real estate, Ian Brown is the best hands you could put yourselves in!” - Kerri M. Eagle, ID

THE JOY OF GIVING WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? When we look around, we have so many reasons to count our blessings. Through all the craziness and uncertainties that 2020 has thrown at us — and it has thrown a lot — there still have been bright lights. One of them has been the outpouring of generosity and lifting up those around us. Hopefully this issue will remind you of the thoughtful, kind and generous people we have living among us as our neighbors and friends. In the pages of this month’s issue, read all about the ways our community comes together during this time of giving. It always warms our hearts to see the myriad ways in which Boise and Eagle celebrates the holidays—family traditions, bountiful feasts and giving back to the community we call home. This month, we hope your home is filled with the aroma of freshly baked pies, the sounds of laughter around the table and the feeling of gratitude in your hearts.

"THE STAHL HOUSE" HAS FINALLY ARRIVED The release of "The Stahl House: Case Study #22 - The Making of a Modernist Icon" has finally arrived. Local authors Kim Cross, Shari Stahl Gronwald,

and Bruce Stahl tell the never-before-seen story of one of history's most iconic architecture pieces. “It's the story of a blue-collar family in a white-collar dream house." Read the story of Buck and Carlotta Stahl, and their journey with architect Pierre Koenig, photographer Julius Shulman, and Jon Entenza. See original photos of the construction, the family, and most importantly, how this house and this family grew to take care of each other through their struggling times. You can pick up the book at Rediscovered Books in downtown Boise, or order it online at Chronicle Books.
"FUNCTIONAL ZERO" When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, many struggled to pay rent and maintain a roof over their head as jobs began to shut down. But there is a campaign in the works to help eliminate family homelessness, and the pandemic only spurred this goal. The 300 Homes Campaign is working to diminish homelessness to "functional zero," which means there is no waitlist for families to receive help for housing. The plan is to increase rental assistance and more, and raise $8.4 million for the project. The campaign was delayed a few months due to the pandemic, and it has not been decided if the end date will be moved from 2025 to 2026, but the project is preparing to continue moving forward. She honors them, along with other every day heroes, for their service and sacrifice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

REFUGEE FROM LAOS, CAME TO BOISE AS A YOUNG GIRL IN 1981. Finding a way to give back to the community that welcomed and embraced her family has been a childhood dream, and has evolved into the framework for a museum called the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora. Its acronym is IMID and is commonly pronounced ‘eye-mid’ or ‘IM ID,’ as in ‘I’m Idaho.’ Diaspora is a word rooted in ancient Greek meaning ‘to sow or scatter seeds.’ Today “diaspora” is associated with cultural groups being displaced from their origin homelands for multiple well-founded

For refugees, freedom, safety for their children, and escaping persecution and war become a matter of life and death. “I am passionate about preserving and honoring the human journey from around the world through art, music, literature, video, photography, and food,” says Dr. Louangketh. Completing her education at Boise State University, she now teaches at her alma mater in the Health Sciences, and University Foundations Program. “Throughout my life I have been gifted with incredible mentors, and my one true inspiration and hero is my mother.” In 2019, the University of Idaho’s College

of Art and Architecture entered into a partnership to help conceptualize a home for the museum in Boise. “The goal is to give students an opportunity to tell a story through the design journey — just as IMID will tell stories of people from different cultures, their journeys and of place making in Idaho,” explained Rula Awwad-Rafferty, program head and professor of Interior Architecture and Design, whose students participated in the project. The multi-phase design project engaged a variety of local, national, and international partners, including Cushing Terrell, which provided professional support for the students and design studios. “We believe this partnership provides a significant opportunity to foster equity and diversity. If you don’t have a group to come with, you can come meet other great people from the community.” And of course, donated food is always appreciated. “It’s important people in need have food, but it’s most important that they have healthy, nutritious food,” Vauk said. “We really emphasize fruits and vegetables and whole grains: the nutrition categories. Last year, 87 percent of the food that was donated was nutritious.” Think shelf-stable items that pair well with the fresh produce, milk, and protein The Idaho Foodbank receives through food grocers and local partnerships. Items like fruits canned in juice or extra light syrup, whole grain pasta, brown rice, canned or dried beans, and pantry staples like spices, cooking oils, and flour are always sought after. The Idaho Foodbank even offers a food drive kit on its website so you can set up a drive that nets healthy, nutritious food for Idahoans. Until a hunger-free Idaho is a reality, Vauk said, “The Idaho Foodbank will continue to be responsive to the needs of the state.”

MOISES SOTELO I was born and raised in Idaho, and have always enjoyed photography. When I was a little kid I would get disposable cameras and take pictures of cool things I found. I got away from photography until I was 20. I bought my first camera for a trip I was taking; ever since then I fell in love with it even more, especially being able to capture nature and its beauty. Photography is a way for me to tell a story and to be able to express myself. Moises Sotelo Email: Sotelomedia@gmail.com Instagram: Sotelo_Media

WITH OUR BUSY LIVES, IT’S EASY TO LOSE SIGHT OF THE LITTLE THINGS WE CAN DO TO MAKE THE WORLD A KINDER, GENTLER PLACE. As a result, kids miss out on golden opportunities to emulate kindness and experience its rewards. So, why not set a goal with your kids, and see how many acts of kindness your family can rack up in a single day or week? Here are some ideas to get your kids started. CALL

GREAT-GRANDPARENTS. This is a big one because often, grandparents are the ones to initiate calls. So, make your grandparents’ day by giving them a call. VISIT AN ELDERLY NEIGHBOR. Many seniors are shut in because they can no longer drive. Often, even those who do drive don’t get the social interaction they need. Likely, someone in your neighborhood could use some company. OFFER A COMPLIMENT. It doesn’t get any easier than this. But don’t offer praise you don’t mean. Otherwise, it’ll come off as disingenuous. Notice what someone is wearing or doing, or think about the person’s personality or something they’ve done. Then offer a compliment that you really mean.
