Exciting things are happening at The Riverside Hotel! Since taking over ownership of the hotel in October 2011, Riverside Hospitality, LLC has been working to create a local haven and resort for local residents and guests. Their goal has been to bring this formerly grand hotel back to life and make it a place to enjoy music, food and the beautiful Boise River. “Hotel Partners, David and Lynda Johnson, have extensive music background and had a vision to bring the best of Boise valley’s local music talent to The Riverside’s many guests. We feature multiple live, local music acts every day, and the Sapphire Room hosts an average of 4-5 ticketed concerts and events per week. Annually, The Riverside hosts nearly 900 live music acts between our three music venues.” says Partner Kristen Jensen. Upon acquiring the hotel, one of the first priorities was to bring back the Sandbar patio bar and grill along the river. During the outdoor dining season (May through September), the Sandbar offers a locally sourced menu and two full bars with an upscale backyard barbeque feel and live local music
daily. Chef Mark Langford says the Brisket Sandwich is a menu favorite. “We slow roast Snake River Kobe beef with a spicy rub, soaked in au jus, top with provolone cheese and a chipotle-horseradish aioli served on an Idaho potato bun.” The menu also includes a good selection of house made burgers also served on potato buns, salads, appetizers and local wines, craft beers and cocktails. In early-October the Sandbar closes for the season and the Sapphire room opens. This premier listening room has nightly ticketed concerts and events, with a sophisticated menu and full bar. Music enthusiasts will love the jazz night club vibe of the Sapphire Room. Dining options available year-round, are the Riverside Grill and Bar 365. Food & Beverage Manager Brian Anderton says “Bar 356 has become a great option for those in the area to stop in for happy hour from 4-6. We offer craft cocktails, ½ price bar appetizers during happy hour, and live music 365 days of the year.” The Riverside Grill is open from 5am-11pm and serves a breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner daily. The Riverside grill is well known for

its grand weekend brunch buffet. The buffet menu includes prime rib carving, ham carving, smoked salmon, southwest eggs benedict, a build your custom omelet station, and house made pastries. “On Sunday, we expand the brunch into the Sapphire Room and partner with the Boise Blues Society to feature a local blues ensemble. The “Blues Brunch” includes New Orleans favorites such as dirty rice, white cheddar bacon grits and beignets,” explains Chef Langford. The Riverside Hotels is also known for its special event meals. These ticketed events started with Easter and Mother’s Day grand brunches for 1000 and were so popular that they have expanded to include a Thanksgiving feast buffet and two annual New Year’s Eve event packages: one in the Sapphire Room, which includes a seated four-course dinner and music entertainment, and one in the Grand Ballroom, featuring a buffet dinner and entertainment by the Fabulous Chancellors. Both packages include an overnight stay and a breakfast brunch buffet. For availability and reservations, call the hotel directly at 208.343.1871
The Riverside is committed to improving our community, both physically by caring for the Boise River and maintaining a beautiful property, and socially by providing a gathering place to experience food and music. “One of the things that we are looking for is an opportunity to overcome the idea that hotel dining is just for out of town guests and bringing back the practice of seeking out fine regional dining at your local hotel. We are seeing a renaissance in the full hospitality experience including entertainment, with great cocktails, food and service. Our entire team is dedicated to providing that experience and we have seen a lot of success over the years.”

New Year, New Success!
ARTICLE JAMIE AMES
THE KEY TO SETTING SUCCESSFUL GOALS 1. Eat Better THE NEW YEAR FILLS US WITH ENERGY TO RISE TO NEW CHALLENGES. We feel inspired to achieve new goals. We resolve to be better. But a few weeks go by, and slowly we drift from our targets. Here are some tried-and-true tips for staying on track with New Year’s resolutions once and for all. + IMAGINE. Start with your target. Figure out exactly what you want looks like. Journaling this is especially helpful.
D: Blender Girl Smoothies app will match your mood to any smoothie. iOS, free. A: Cookbook: Skinnytaste One and Done by Gina Homolka, $18, Amazon.com, or The MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook by Steven Rinella, $35, Amazon.com. L: Cooking classes at A’Tavola, $65 for 5 sessions, ATavolaBoise.com/cooking-classes
+ PLAN. Once you have a picture of your target in mind, choose two to three small tasks you can accomplish that will help you get closer to it. For example, if your resolution is to eat healthier, choose something specific like eating five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. “Eat more fruit” is not specific enough. Figure out how much, how many, when, where and how you will do it, and make sure your tasks are attainable. Nobody is perfect all the time. Saying, “I am going to eat five servings of fruit every single day for three months” is a specific, worthy goal to aspire to, but it’s far more achievable to say, “I am going to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables at least five days a week” since nobody is perfect and unforeseen circumstances can arise. Then write down the tasks you have chosen. + TRACK. After you choose and record your tasks, all

that is left is to work the plan every single day and track it. Get a chart, planner page or digital tracker, and mark off every day that you complete all of your tasks. Your only job is to work the plan without breaking the chain. If you do break it, shake it off and start a new chain.* + EVALUATE AND TWEAK. Set a time limit such as one month for your action plan. At the end of that time, reevaluate how you are progressing toward your target. Change your tasks as necessary and then work the new plan for another month. + It is important that your action plan is achievable. If your target is losing 40-plus pounds, focus on the first 2 pounds and choose tasks that will get you there. Don’t

REGULAR PEST SERVICES ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF A CLEAN AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT. Insects and rodents perpetrate many illnesses and diseases. It’s through pest control that we limit the spread of things like West Nile Virus, foodborne illnesses, Zika virus, plague, hantavirus and others. Controlling ants, mosquitos, cockroaches, mice, bedbugs and other common pests is critical to a healthy lifestyle. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH YOUR BUSINESS? My business runs through three generations of family ownership dating back to the 1930s. I relocated to Boise in 1981 and have been serving the Treasure Valley and beyond ever since. It was in 2011 that I had the opportunity to acquire the Orkin brand and began doing business as Orkin Pest Control. WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS SPECIAL AND SETS IT APART FROM OTHER COMPANIES? I think what sets us apart is our focus on the long-term, in customer relations and team member relations. We are a locally owned and managed company that also has the benefit of being a part of Orkin. We proudly call Idaho home. Our people are at

One of our most popular fresh juices is also one of the very best for anyone with an active lifestyle. Sweet and earthy with a gorgeous fiery hue, it’s packed with vitamins and minerals from four superfood vegetables: ++ Fresh beets are high in iron and folate, along with a nutrient the body can convert to nitric oxide, which supports healthy circulation. Additionally, it provides the amino acid betaine, which can improve liver function. ++ Celery adds a crisp flavor and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. Weekend (or week-long) warriors will appreciate its magnesium content that can help relax sore muscles. ++ Carrots are known for their high beta-carotene content, which the body can convert to vitamin A that supports night vision and may help ward off macular degeneration. It may also help protect the skin against dryness and sun damage (though you’ll still want to use a good sunscreen). ++ Finally, the Foothills Sunset gets a punch of spice from fresh, organic ginger, which has anti-inflammatory properties and helps warm the body (skiers and snowboarders, take note!). It’s also great to help settle an upset stomach and tastes amazing.

H ow to F i n d Yo u r W i nte r G ro ove ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ROGER PHILLIPS
I GREW UP ON THE OREGON COAST WHERE 50 SHADES OF GRAY DESCRIBED WINTER, NOT A TAWDRY NOVEL. The weather ranged from overcast to misty to monsoon rains and gale-force winds, and if you loved the outdoors, it was a mental test of endurance. When I came to Idaho, I was stunned to hear someone say, “I can’t wait for winter.” Idahoans are blessed to live in a four-season state, and winter recreation brings its own vibe and groove. You can rhythmically carve turns down a corduroy ski slope or kick up cold-smoke roostertails while snowboarding fresh powder. You can push your legs and lungs to their lactic threshold while skate skiing on a Nordic trail or casually leave cartoonishly large footprints while snowshoeing across a meadow. How about revving a snowmobile and taking a scenic tour through Idaho’s backcountry when it's abandoned by all but a few birds? Or cutting fresh tracks through miles of pristine powder in the mountains?

Those activities are not only possible within a short drive of the Treasure Valley, but they’re also as common as corn in Kansas. Your friends, co-workers and neighbors already do them, and there’s no reason you can’t join them. If you’re new to winter sports, the first step is buying quality winter clothing. WHAT DEFINING MOMENTS SET YOU ON YOUR CAREER PATH? I enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom for 14 years. However, I always found such joy and fulfillment when I was at the gym, and the fitness environment stretched me, pushed me, challenged me and gave me purpose. I joined Orangetheory Fitness as a Founding Member in January 2016 and instantly knew it was a place I could thrive and absolutely fell in love with the Orangetheory Fitness concept. Suddenly, (14 years later!) my kids were all in school, and I was ready for something to call my own. I joined the team of Orangetheory Fitness to use my leadership skills. One of my strengths is the ability to connect with people and help instill passion and motivation to try new things, crush goals and know that anything is possible!
WHAT ARE YOUR SUCCESS HABITS? I find success in the details of the day. I am an organized person by nature and find that if my time is prioritized, and I have a checklist, it will get done—and it does.
WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU LIKE TO STAY HEALTHY? I stay healthy by choosing to be active each day. I choose to move because I get to, not because I must! Nutrition is key in how my body feels each day. It is important to take care of myself. Healthy ingredients fuel the vessel to give me the energy

and clarity to check off those boxes that I create each day. I’m surrounded by inspiring people daily who are engaging in their personal fitness journey, and it is a pleasure to be a part of that! I feel so much gratitude in loving what I do every single day in the workspace I have chosen.
