write our January letter—talking about new beginnings—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past memories you hold closely in your hearts and keep the new ones you create in the present for as long as you can. We’ll take your lead, and we can’t wait to see you next year!

FOUR WINTER ACTIVITIES THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON, AND MANY OF US ARE HOSTING WITH A REVOLVING DOOR OF FAMILY, EXTENDED FAMILY AND OTHER GUESTS. Nothing against Idaho’s favorite winter activities, such as skiing and snowmobiling, but it can be tough to get a bunch of folks outfitted and into those sports if they don’t have the gear and the necessary skills.

One thing that makes ice fishing popular is unlike boating of bank fishing, you can take as many people as you want. You actually don’t need any special gear for ice fishing except an auger and a slush spoon. Your regular fishing gear will do fine, or you can even make your own. Many fish have

been caught through the ice with a simple tip-up rig that you can build for a couple bucks with a dowel, some stiff wire and fishing line. Use some bait and maybe a few jigs and you stand a good chance of catching some fish, and winter-caught perch and trout are really tasty.

WILDLIFE WATCHING Load up the car and head up Idaho 21 between Lucky Peak Reservoir and Idaho City, or Middle Fork of the Boise River Road. Those areas are in the heart of the Boise River Wildlife Management Area, which winters thousands of mule deer, elk and pronghorn antelope. Bring your binoculars, and spotting scope if you have one, but leave your pets at home. Deer and elk are on their winter range, and often in large herds that are easy to spot. It’s important to watch the animals from a distance, and if feasible, stay inside your vehicle. A vehicle doesn’t make them nervous, but a person might, and they need to conserve energy to get through winter, which is why you leave your pets at home because a dog will often spook deer and elk. Winter is a great time to see dozens, or even hundreds, of deer and elk within a short drive of the valley, and everyone loves seeing lots of animals. December 2018 | Boise Lifestyle

WHY DO YOU ENJOY SNOWMOBILING? As the owner of a landscape company, I have very little time for recreation when the weather is warm. I enjoy snowmobiling because it is something I can do in my downtime of the winter. I am realizing if you don’t make the time to go, you won’t ever go. We are generally off three to four days a week during the winter, allowing me to spend more time in the hills. I always take my cell phone with me and try to stay close to areas I have service in case something arises with work. I have the best crew/team working for me. They give me peace of mind that I can leave my business for a couple days, and it will be in good hands. HOW DID YOU AND JUSTIN MEET AND END UP STARTING A BUSINESS TOGETHER? Justin Parker and I met randomly. I was out mowing lawns 11 years ago when he stopped by, introduced himself and gave me a business card, and we became friends. We have quite a bit in common, such as our work ethic and goals as well as enjoying our free time. Throughout our friendship, we have often talked about partnering up

If you haven’t already, you should really experience: + After-dark alpine skiing or snowshoeing to a moonlit yurt for dinner beneath the pines at Ponderosa State Park + Skiing and snowboarding for all levels on Brundage Mountain + Snowmobiling on more than 500 miles of groomed trails, including the Burgdorf Hot Springs + An hour-long sleigh ride along the Gold Fork River to see and feed Rocky Mountain elk, which can be arranged by Shore Lodge for guests. Riders will also likely see white-tailed deer and foxes on the trip. + Christmas tree hunting, complete with hot cocoa around a fire during the holiday season, which can be arranged by Shore Lodge. + McCall’s iconic Winter Carnival celebrating all things winter: snow sculpture, snowbike races, monster dog pull, torchlight and Mardi Gras parades, live music and more. + Snowshoeing the area’s natural terrain. Shore Lodge offers guests complimentary snowshoes. When you are ready to relax and warm up, visit Shore Lodge’s award-winning spa, the Cove, for a soak in its saltwater immersion pools and a massage. When you get hungry, check out the totally transformed culinary program at the resort with three incredible dining concepts. The first, the Cutwater at Payette Lake, opened in summer 2017 and offers guests an analog game room and a 2,000-gallon saltwater fish tank; and the last one, the Narrows Steakhouse, opened in January 2018 and recently received a 2018 Wine Spectator Restaurant Award. In addition to its fantastic wine selection, the Narrows offers hand-selected specialty steaks, warm inviting atmosphere, and breathtaking views. Don’t miss a handcrafted cocktail (such as the huckleberry-infused Huckletini) at the Bar, located just off the lobby with plush leather furniture and panoramic views of the lake and mountains. With dining options ranging from informal to more refined, Shore Lodge has something for everyone. While vacationing in McCall, your biggest concern may be that you won’t be able to fit in everything you want to do. The good news is that McCall is so close to home that you can keep coming back to revisit your favorite activities and try something new as well. Another option: Purchase a vacation home at Whitetail Club, an intimate real estate community and club in the heart of McCall where owners can enjoy a year-round clubhouse on Payette Lake; a private ice skating rink over the winter months; and warm-weather amenities like Whitetail Club Golf Course and Fish and Swim Club, both open during summer months. For more information, visit ShoreLodge.com and WhitetailClub.com.

WHAT DEFINING MOMENTS SET YOU ON YOUR
+ VETERAN
After being in the high-tech industry for several years
+ OWNER OF HOME HELPERS
CAREER PATH? with a part-time janitorial business on the side, the demand for care services from our senior clients emerged to a point that couldn’t be ignored. From there, we allowed the business to change and become who we are today. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I’ve always liked starting something from scratch and growing it into something to be proud of, whether it’s starting a family or creating a business. Becoming an employer in the service industry not only provides jobs but also helps others in the community. WHAT ARE YOUR SUCCESS HABITS? + Read books + Don’t stop learning. Learn more, and try to become a master of your trade. + Dream crazy big! + Work harder than your competition. + Be relentless in your pursuits to accomplish whatever it is that you’re trying to accomplish. WHAT IS A HOLIDAY TRADITION YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ENJOY THIS TIME OF YEAR? We like to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. Often we take a family vacation. We have made some great memories at Disneyland, in Mexico, or visiting my parents and siblings in Virginia.
