Summer Fun and Adventure
M
y family wanted hamburgers tonight, so I dusted off the outdoor grill and fired it up for the first time this year. Just as I was finishing up, I was hit with a sudden burst of wind, followed by rain. I could feel the cold burst of air rushing by and it reminded me of the weeks preceding Halloween, sharp and cold—not the cool breeze you would expect for a nice spring evening. I checked the weather on my phone, and sure enough, another storm is rolling in. Temperatures early the next morning were forecast at 37 degrees. Summer fun? Not today. It’s early May, and with the crazy deadlines associated with producing a monthly magazine, I find myself writing this for the July summer fun issue. With the looming editorial deadline, I can’t wait for a warm day for inspiration. So, here’s to a nice warm summer! In this issue, you will find dozens of ideas to have fun, explore and enjoy the great Idaho outdoors. While you’re out, take a quick culinary adventure and find some local food trucks for a great summer meal. Finish off your day at one of Boise’s spectacular ice cream shops. With so much to do and experience, it’s no wonder we love Boise so much. What a great place to live. While we are on the topic of adventures, I’m proud and excited to welcome Roger Phillips to the team. Roger will be contributing to our Water & Woods feature. Water & Woods will focus on anything and everything under the sun in the great Idaho outdoors and there is no one more qualified for the job than Boise’s own Roger Phillips. When it’s time to wind down, make a quick watermelon cooler, find some shade and check out our new Worthy Reads feature. We are pleased to welcome Rachel Bennett who will be contributing our book reviews in each issue going forward. We are excited to have her on our team and can’t wait for the literary adventures she will bring to our attention. So, there you have it. Summer is finally here—hopefully—and we have two new features to look forward to each month. We hope you enjoy this summer fun issue. We sure have enjoyed putting it all together. Let us know what you think; we welcome your comments and suggestions on our website. We wish you the very best this summer. By the time this is printed, I’ll be preparing my comments for fall where once again, the brisk autumn air will be upon us. Take time to enjoy yourself this summer. Appreciate the now, the day at hand and our great state of Idaho today. Richard Meyer Correction: On page 20 of the June issue, Woody Elliott is with 208 Houses

taring at the clock, I counted down the seconds until school was out. The last click, the bell would ring, and the boundaries would melt away. Summer had arrived. Gone were divisions by age or subject. No more recess that always felt a little too short. No more shoes! I could spend my time relaxing, casual in a swimsuit and shorts, playing with the kids in my neighborhood. Whether it was the exhilaration of riding bikes, playing tag, selling Kool-Aid, or running through freezing sprinklers, there was always something exciting happening on those bright, happy days. What I loved best was the easy friendships with kids of every age. My neighborhood had kids from preschool to high school, and during the summer we all played together in the park behind my house. No matter the activity, everybody was welcome. We picked blackberries and climbed trees. Decked out in black, we played long night games of “spy” or capture the flag. Always there was baseball. My brother organized more pickup baseball games than I can count. With as few as four players or as many as a full roster, we would play until it was too dark to see the ball. My brother, the gifted pitcher, would step right up to the batter’s box and gently toss the ball underhanded to whichever tiny batter was up. Nobody kept an accurate count of balls and strikes against the little kids, and nobody tried too hard to field against them either. We just wanted to play together. Even our Mennonite neighbor kids would come out and sit on the grass, too shy to play, but part of the group nonetheless. Those sunny summer days when we did all the things with all the people are my favorite childhood memories. Along the way, we lost the kind of freewheeling summers my brother and I spent roaming the neighborhood. Sometimes, for my own children’s sake, I wish that we could get a little of that back. I am always searching in the hope of finding some of that goodness.
Last week, I discovered Wild Root Café & Market. Owners Michael and AnneMarie Trebbi are enthusiastic and charming. Michael is the chef, and Anne-Marie works as the manager. They have created a menu that has something for everyone. Michael describes it as eclectic American: casual quick service with a focus on presentation. Whether it is a hint of Italian flair, Migas, Vietnamese, French or a vegetarian/vegan dish you are seeking, Michael says what you will find is “a good healthy menu made from scratch.” Wild Root uses fresh, locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to create choices that will tempt even the most discerning palates. Menu offerings change regularly, so there is always something new to try. The café itself is a catchall; part counter service, part table service, with a help-yourself water station. Curious to see what a gourmet café offering vegan options would do with a greasy-spoon classic, I ordered steak and eggs. It was light but filling, with ingredients, I found to my delight, arranged in an array of increasing temperatures. The potatoes were especially tasty. My friend chose the savory waffle, a surprising and wonderful combination of flavors. Michael’s gorgeous presentation blurs the boundaries between formal and casual dining. Dishes are plated with an earthy elegance, equally inviting for those seeking semi-formal dining or for laid-back walk-ins from the farmers market located just beyond the patio. With such appealing dishes, it’s no surprise Wild Root was filled with customers spanning every age and walk of life who appeared happy to be there (this included several children—no small feat, considering Wild Root doesn’t have a dedicated kids' menu). The food was fantastic but even better than that, I felt this true mom and pop cafe had found something of those lost summers—the all-encompassing feeling where anything is possible, and everyone is welcome. Like a baseball game where a kindergartener faces down a high school pitcher, you can’t guess how great it is until you try it. But when you do, it’s glorious. Wild Root is located at 276 N. 8th St. in Boise. It is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

ast September, a call came into the Garden City, Idaho, police dispatch of a structure fire in the vicinity of 52nd and Remington streets. Detective James O’Gorman and Officer Danny Pierce were the first responders on the scene. The front of the trailer was already engulfed in flames when the officers heard screams emanating from the inside. Jaime Randall, who lived in the house with his five dogs, were struggling with the smoke. O’Gorman and Pierce immediately went to the back porch of the structure to see about freeing Randall. After a bit of work and a refrigerator blocking the back door, Randall and a few of the dogs were rescued from the house. Suffering minor burns, lung trauma and smoke inhalation Randall was shortly airlifted to a Utah medical facility, where he was treated. Though the trailer was in a sizable lot and stood alone, damage was sustained to other
property as well as a few vehicles on the premises. Randall, unfortunately, lost a few dogs to the toxic fumes during the fire. After a brief investigation, it was ruled the fire was an accident and not caused by arson. The alleged cause of the fire was rumored to be an unextinguished cigarette that was burning on the front porch. Shortly after being released from medical care, Randall sought out O’Gorman and Pierce to give them thanks for saving his life. He visited the officers at their precinct with candy bars and a card. Though O’Gorman had a previous hotel fire rescue under his belt, this was a new experience for Pierce. Nevertheless, both officers acknowledge a certain “switch” goes off inside them, and all they know is to focus and help. It might have been another day in the life of O’Gorman and Pierce, but for Randall, guardian angels sometimes wear badges. Detective O’Gorman

KILTED KOD KILTED KOD
There’s something special about a chef on a food truck. When Kevin McIntosh decided to give up truck driving, he knew he liked food and wanted to cook for people, but he also loved interacting with the people enjoying his food. That’s why operating a food truck was a perfect fit for him. McIntosh dedicates almost every day of the week to his truck, whether he’s serving food around the Treasure Valley, cleaning the truck or prepping food. He keeps it simple, and despite requests for salads or sides, he does one thing really well: fish and chips. Of course, he understands not everyone is a fish person, so he also offers chicken prepared in a similar way. He gets his fish directly from Alaska, and perhaps the best compliment he ever got was from six visitors from Scotland who all gave his fish and chips a try. When he asked for their critiques, they said it was spot on except for one thing—it’s supposed to be wrapped in newsprint! The Kilted Kod goes the extra mile for customers, which is why they frequently return. McIntosh supports the men and women in uniform and never lets them pay; he says he feels lucky that he can give back through good food. Be sure to look for his truck around town, including at his regular post at Sliding Rock Brewery most Saturdays. 18

URBAN SMOKE URBAN SMOKE
When Joe Bailey suggested to his wife, Amy Bell-Bailey, they should leave their day jobs and open a food truck she thought, “absolutely not.” He soon convinced her it was a good idea, and two years later, their supporters throughout the Treasure Valley have proved that it was, in fact, a great idea. Joe always loved to grill and smoke meats in the backyard, so they immediately gravitated towards a barbecue truck when putting together their plan. Everything is made from scratch, including their coleslaw and baked beans with bacon. This is a testament to how Amy sees the food truck scene changing—people are finally catching on that food trucks are more than cheap, fast food. Many, like Urban Smoke, are offering carefully made, high-quality food offerings. They have some regular spots around town every week, but they can also be found at breweries, food truck rallies and festivals. The Triple D sandwich is not to be missed by any meat lover, as it is a hot link piled high with bacon and pulled pork. CONTINUED >

TANTALIZING FOOD TRUCKS (CON TI N U ED)
SLOW RIVER COFFEE CO. Sid Gauby was a pastor for over 20 years and living in Indiana before he moved back to his hometown of Boise to open his coffee truck. He had inadvertently gotten into the coffee business through his ministry, and when he decided he needed to be closer to family, he followed his passion for good coffee. Many people are surprised he has a high-quality espresso machine and coffee equipment on his truck, which is even more proof food trucks are evolving into vehicles delivering sophisticated flavors. Though he doesn’t operate at too many festivals or events, he does maintain a good spot at the corner of Sixth and State streets where regulars stop by each morning for their favorite cup of coffee or a tasty mocha. Some employers hire Gauby to provide coffee for their employees or clients as a token of appreciation. He loves working with these people, especially when he can say, “Order whatever you want!” Gauby was one of the initial founders of SIFTA, the Southern Idaho Food Truck Association, and truly cares about both the experience of the customer as well as those serving the food. Food truck drivers love their customers and their food, and when cooking on a food truck, Gauby says, people can see you care about what you’re doing and you’re putting your heart into it.
A G U H S N W O BR SOUL FOOD BROWN SHUGA SOUL FOOD
Yvonne Andersen-Thomas has a passion for food, and after closing her restaurant in Mountain Home to move to Boise, she soon realized she missed cooking. She now runs one of the most tenured food trucks in town, Brown Shuga Soul Food. Though operating the truck is hard work, she doesn’t intend on opening a brick-and-mortar store anytime soon. The mobility of a food truck allows her to visit various events around town, including one of her favorites, the Miner’s Jubilee, in Baker City, Oregon. Brown Shuga doesn’t have a regular setup during the week like many of the other trucks, but she remains busy through events including lunches, school festivals and big estate sales. Her food has won many awards through the years, and after trying her popular pulled pork sandwich, you’ll understand that it is well-deserved attention. She focuses on Southern and Cajun foods, such as mac and cheese, jambalaya, gumbo, collard greens and po’boys. On a good day, you may even get a chance to try her homemade bread pudding. In the very little spare time Andersen-Thomas has, she works with the students in the culinary program at Renaissance High School, attempting to pass on both the skills and passion she has for good food. 20

IL SEGRETO PIZZA Paul McClanthy traveled the world doing merchandise for big rock bands before deciding to set up camp in Boise and start a business. Through his travels, he was able to try some of the best food big cities offered and wanted to bring some of these flavors back to Idaho. Il Segreto Pizza emphasizes his love for wood-fired pizza and having a base that supports his creativity and love of experimenting with food. Though the traditional pies are his most popular, you may want to be adventurous and try the Philly cheesesteak pizza complete with provolone and mushrooms or perhaps an alfredo pizza. The light and airy crust is what makes these Neapolitan-style pizzas special, puffed up perfectly in the wood-fired stove he can set up just about anywhere. Il Segreto can be found around town, including every Saturday at the Boise Farmers Market where he obtains many of the fresh veggies and meats he incorporates into his pizzas. He can also be found at Telaya Wine Co. on occasion, where you may find that his pizzas go perfectly with a glass of pinot. McClanthy hopes to get more into catering, but enjoys meeting people and educating them about the possibilities of food. As Boise grows, so will the palates of the people seeking more than just your typical commercial pizza.

GROWLER’S
PIZZA & GRILL F
or those Boise folks who have yet to make it to McCall, you’ll now be able to experience at least one great thing that McCall has to offer, and that’s the tasty pizza and sandwiches of Growler’s Pizza and Grill. Opened about four years ago by Troy Summers and his wife Jennifer, they decided to open a second location in Boise after teaching their son-in-law, Mark Sanchez, the tricks of the trade. Focusing on homemade everything – from the pizza dough and focaccia to the fry sauce and burger patties. They even take the time to grate and blend their own special mixture of cheeses. Not only will they be bringing their recipes down from McCall, but they’ll also be bringing Broken Horn Brewery which will be housed in the restaurant and occupy six or seven of their taps, in addition to some local and mainstream favorites. Located at Five Mile and Overland in the Union Square plaza, Sanchez found that there was a need for a neighborhood hang-out spot in between the restaurant meccas of The Village in Meridian and downtown Boise. Be sure to check out their patio or sit at the bar to catch your favorite game, but if you don’t feel like taking off those comfy pajamas, order ahead and pick up through their convenient take-out window. With everything made to order, there’s no doubt you’ll be back each week for pizza night.

BOGUS BASIN
BLOOMS WITH SUMMER RECRATION MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR ADDITIONS ARE BEING ADDED THIS SUMMER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ROGER PHILLIPS
S
ummer is a beautiful time in the Treasure Valley with its long, sunny days and variety of outdoor pursuits, but it can also get blazing hot. Many people flock to rivers and reservoirs to cool off, and others head up in elevation. One of the quickest trips to the mountains is less than 20 miles from downtown Boise at Bogus Basin. Best known as a ski resort, its summer programs have gradually grown in recent years and will bloom this summer with the addition of multimillion-dollar improvement projects. The resort is upgrading its existing offerings, such as lift-served hiking and mountain biking, concerts, disc golf and food and drink. It also plans to add a climbing wall, summer tubing—where you slide down a slippery surface on inner tubes—and perhaps most exciting, an alpine coaster that’s like a bobsled on rails. Most of the improvements are expected to be done and available by mid-summer, which means visitors may see some work in progress, but don’t let that deter you from a visit. Bogus Basin remains lush and green during summer when the Boise Foothills are tan, hot and dusty. With the base elevation of 5,800 feet and a 7,600-foot summit, Bogus Basin is typically about 10 degrees cooler than Boise, and it has brisk mornings and a soothing afternoon breeze to keep you cool while you’re hiking or biking up the slopes. Look for splashes of color from wildflowers, and you may spot a deer or elk grazing on grass and shrubs on the mountain. Soak in the views of the Treasure Valley below across the Owyhee Desert, or into neighboring mountain ranges to the east. Work up a hearty appetite and stop by the lodge for lunch on the patio. The upscale menu and craft beers have become a favorite for Bogus Basin's summer visitors, as well as its casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere.
Visit Bogus Basin's website, BogusBasin.org , for its full summer schedule of events and more details on its new recreation, or call 208.332.5100. 26

MW does not disappoint in releasing the 2017 X3 xDrive35i, a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) with potential for a family road trip or track day. With four different drive modes, the ease of moving from city to mountains is seamless. The default comfort mode relaxes the throttle for
everyday driving. For those eco-friendly drivers, the Eco-pro mode is, even more, fuel efficient by shifting at a lower RPM. The X3 combines its features to provide not only an ideal driving machine but an environmentally conscious one as well. At a red light, the X3 turns off the engine to prevent waste. While many of us enjoy cooling our car down in the summer; BMW engineers do not condone the practice of “puffing,” or starting up a vehicle before driving. To avoid this cushioned process, BMW has provided an app for drivers to turn fans on or open the windows on summer days. If you have forgotten where you parked, this app also allows you to flash the vehicle's lights, honk the horn and much more. Day-to-day driving has never been safer; not only is the driver looking out for hazardous conditions, but the vehicle is as well. To make the driver aware of danger, the steering wheel vibrates when nearing a potential hazard. These include; lane departures, active blind spot awareness, and Active Cruise Control. These safety features combine to maintain a safe distance from you and the driver ahead. Steering wheel vibrations are not the only way the X3 alerts the driver; break interruptions will occur for potential frontal or pedestrian collisions. July 2017 | Boise Lifestyle

WORTHYREADS
A MAN CALLED OVE BY FREDRIK BACKMAN & IDAHO BY EMILY RUSKOVICH ARTICLE RACHEL BENNETT
“We always think there's enough time to do things with other people. Time to say things to them. And then something happens and then we stand there holding on to words like 'if'.” ― Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
A Man Called Ove is a heartwarming read about a grumpy, crotchety, mean old man whom you instantly create a soft spot for in your heart; despite how much he loathes people who don't drive Saabs. This funny, thoughtful and endearing story follows a man named Ove (pronounced Oo-vah) who believes there is nothing worthwhile about life since the passing of his wife; and not in a depressed way but in a matter-of-fact that's-just-the-way-it-is way. Until that is, a rowdy and foreign family moves in next door, knocking over his mailbox with their trailer. They end up causing him more grief than he finds appropriate and in turn, he realizes there is more left to live in his life than he originally thought. This book is a fun, easy read that will leave you with a smile on your face and warmth in your heart and is definitely a worthy read.
When I saw Idaho, I had to read it. The cover is gorgeous, the summary promising, and it takes place in the panhandle of our beautiful state. The story opens with a tragic murder and a woman trying to uncover its secrets while caring for her mentally ailing husband, all those elements immediately grabbing your attention and interest. Idaho has beautiful prose with poetic and hypnotic descriptions. The story unfolds through past and present narratives from different points of view, seamlessly intertwined to create a mesmerizing and addicting story. In the second half of the novel, I began to feel the descriptions were a little heavy and I found myself wanting more answers about the story. But Ruskovich does her job of evoking a cacophony of emotions: heartbreak, depression, anger, warmth, exhaustion.
“How quickly someone else's life can enter through the cracks we don't know are there until this foreign thing is inside of us. We are more porous than we know.” ― Emily Ruskovich, Idaho
Every reader has a preferred genre and while this book is beautifully written, it reminds me why I don't default to literary fiction--to me that genre is more about the telling of the story than the actual story itself. I believe every book should be given a chance, don't go into Idaho thinking it will be wrapped up with a pretty bow. It's a heavy story that shouldn't be read if one is looking for an easy summer read. But if you're a fan of literary fiction and are looking for beautiful writing, this book is worth the read for you. Ruskovich is an Idaho native who will be teaching at Boise State University this fall.
