Creating a Home JUNE 2017

M

y wife Julie and I have been married for 22 years now. We have six sons, ranging in age from 19 down to 2. We have our hands full and spare time doesn’t really exist anymore.

Despite that lack of time, I’ve always achieved more around the house in May and June than any other time of the year. June typically is when I complete most of my home improvement projects. The temperature is usually about as perfect as it gets in Boise. The rain has usually stopped, and the weather allows me to open the garage door, windows and doors and start working all around the house. Our feature this month is all about upgrading and updating your home. We have gathered some of our community's top home improvement and design experts and invited them to share some of their expertise, tips and ideas. Hopefully, you find a nugget of information that sparks an idea or jump-starts a home improvement project in your home. Need a little extra help? Reach out to one of these home improvement experts or someone you know and trust to help you get started. If you need to get out of the house while your home improvement project is in full swing, read through the Lifestyle Calendar to find a fun activity to get your mind off it all. Our calendar is jam-packed with tons of great activities this month. The private gardens tour on June 11 will give you some good ideas for the beautification of your property. If that isn’t distraction enough, the Paranormal Investigation at the Old Idaho Penitentiary on June 16 will certainly do the trick. And if you feel like skipping the home improvement scene altogether, there are some beautiful homes for sale in this issue. Starting fresh with a new home is certainly one way to either get out of a current project—or create a few new ones.

GRILL

ARTICLE KRISTEN LYNCH

S

uccess in the restaurant biz can be a tough equation to figure out. The ingredients for a thriving business rely on a combination of differing factors: location, sweat equity, hardworking staff and, above all, a variety of great food! Located at the corner of Linder and Chinden Road, Homestead Bar and Grill fits the bill on all counts. Recently celebrating their one year anniversary, this local pub grub is far removed from your typical restaurant or chain experience. Don’t be fooled by the ubiquitous strip mall storefront—once inside, the interior is anything but. The ambiance is both comfortable and welcoming—rustic decor and a giant wraparound bar that could easily seat your whole team for a friendly after-work libation—yet still lends to a relaxed family-friendly atmosphere. The menu is chock-full of different dining selections and offers many options that you’d expect to find with pub fare: grilled burgers, sandwiches, salads, wings. And some items

you wouldn’t: nine different spins on mac 'n' cheese—how about Idaho Mac or Tequila Chicken Mac—and seven varieties of pitas, not to mention 40 different rotating beers on tap and, of course, don’t forget to try their Mega Mary, which they are known for! Become a member of the “Brew Club,” and for a $100 yearly fee, every time you stop by for a cold one, a 25-ounce mug will be filled to the brim for the same price as a pint. Yes, membership does have its privileges. If you and the family or perhaps a group of friends are looking for a little place to meet up, the Homestead Bar and Grill is bound to please. Better yet, how about a little weekend breakfast to soak up the indulgences from the night before? The Homestead Bar and Grill also serves breakfast until noon on Saturdays and Sundays. Go online to check out their happy hour menus and hours.

UPGRADING + UPDATING (CON TI N U ED)

CONNELL LLOYD WITH WOOD WINDOWS

CONNELL LLOYD WITH WOOD WINDOWS

Wood Windows is a 37-year old Boise-owned and -operated company with a focus on high quality and service. Connell Lloyd bought the company five years ago and understands the importance of keeping contractors who know their products in and out on the payroll. Namebrand windows, such as Andersen Windows, are what adds value to the home because people associate name brands with high quality. Vinyl windows are now a dated technology, and many people are choosing a premium product such as metal-clad wood products for both the look and durability. Windows are not something homeowners want to replace frequently, so Lloyd suggests maintaining them by using an ammonia-free cleaner and washing during the cooler part of the day, either early morning or evening. He also advises always hand-washing windows rather than using a hose.

SENECA HULL WITH FRANZ WITTE LANDSCAPING Seneca Hull is the president of Franz Witte Landscaping and the daughter of Franz Witte who began the company 46 years ago. She helped to establish the nursery side of the business, which is now an expansive 20 acres of all things green and blooming. Landscaping is key to improving the curb appeal of your home, and sometimes it may be as simple as adding some colorful pottery with small plants on either side of the doorstep to give it an inviting feel. Hull suggests planting things that bloom early, such as forsythia, or well into fall, such as rose of Sharon. These help keep the colors bright and fresh in your yard. Outdoor kitchens, fire pits or raised vegetable garden beds have become very popular as homeowners extend their living space outdoors and seek to enjoy Boise’s cool summer nights.

SUZIE HALL WITH CORNERSTONE DESIGN Suzie Hall has 25 years of experience in the home design field and is an expert at Cornerstone Design. She thinks about home design like making a cake—you have to think about the details while being able to envision the big picture. Cornerstone Design helps clients to dream, and they can assist in anything from space planning all the way to furnishings, window treatments or color palettes. For homeowners embarking on the initial stage of design, it is important to decide if the purpose of the design is for resale. If preparing a house for resale, stick to universally appealing styles of countertops, tile and cabinetry, but feel free to go bold with elements that are easy to change, like paint color. To keep up with the trends, cool tones paired with brushed brass and gold hardware are in, as well as all different types of home automation systems that help keep a home running efficiently, even from a cell phone.

WOODY ELLIOTT WITH 208 REAL ESTATE Woody Elliot works with the Silvercreek Realty 208 Houses Team and is a first-time homebuyer and military residential specialist. He knows firsthand Boise and Meridian are especially hot markets right now, and with so few homes available, it is a seller’s market. Buyers are entering from California and Washington, so as housing becomes a premium, prices will go up too. Now is the time to buy, and Elliot suggests sitting down with a lender even if you don’t think you are ready to buy. A lender can offer loan options or suggest how to get on track to buy that dream home in the future. For those selling their homes, take care of the simple things that buyers might notice when walking through, like fixing holes in the walls, cleaning the carpets or applying a fresh coat of paint.

CASEY DILLABAUGH WITH DILLABAUGH'S FLOORING Casey Dillabaugh’s father started Dillabaugh’s Flooring in 1982, and they now have four locations offering a variety of services around the Treasure Valley. They offer just about everything from carpet to tile to hardwood and work with new construction, commercial buildings and home floor replacement. Dillabaugh thinks about flooring in two ways: one is floor covering and one is actual flooring. Vinyl and low-cost carpeting are floor coverings. These may be temporary fixes, and something a homeowner might use if not concerned with the lifespan of the product. For longer-term use, products like tile and hardwood add value to the home and are more of a permanent solution. Though many homeowners are seeking hardwood floors, the new technologies such as COREtec products offer a high-quality look and feel but provide easier maintenance for today’s busy families.

MICHAEL SNOW WITH STRITE DESIGN + REMODEL Michael Snow is a designer with an architecture background and helps clients to envision possibilities while adhering to their needs. Strite design + remodel has been in business for 42 years and understands the functionality and design of a home must keep up with our ever-changing lifestyles. The kitchen is now a more social place, opening up to the living room or family room and more homeowners are seeking to connect their kitchen to the backyard seamlessly, whether for summer barbecues or just to keep an eye on the kids. A modern kitchen may include deeper countertops to provide more prep space while still having room for all those gadgets, as well as more drawers in the base cabinets. Snow suggests including natural light as much as possible. Having a wall of windows may be tricky when cabinet space is already slim, but consider installing a skylight to take advantage of light throughout the day.

JOE LEVITCH LEVCO WITH LEVCO BUILDERS Joe Levitch is the president and remodeling contractor for Levco, where he takes the time to meet with each client and evaluate every project. They specialize in older homes, especially in the North End, and are experts in working with complicated remodel projects. Many of these homes were built before building codes, so often getting the home up to code is a tough job. Reconfiguring homes to fit today’s lifestyle may mean moving walls, taking them down, shifting a bathroom into a bedroom or adding a master suite. It is important to consider what it is that is frustrating about your home, then letting the professionals come up with solutions. Making a home fit for the modern family may include adding an island in the kitchen where everyone can gather, switching out big soaker tubs for a large walk-in shower or just updating paint colors to a more contemporary color palette.

DANNY JOHNSON WITH OGATA CONSTRUCTION Danny Johnson is proud to say Ogata Construction is still primarily a family run company. Started by his father-in-law in 1981, they stay busy doing a bit of everything from custom homes to kitchens and baths to large-scale home remodels. When buying a home, the first things you notice are the bathrooms and the kitchen. These are the big ticket items when remodeling a home, and buyers may be leery of a purchase when they can’t see past a dated or dysfunctional kitchen. Johnson notes the majority of families are looking for those open floor plan kitchens. Twenty years ago, the kitchen wasn’t the hub of activity as it is today. Now, the kitchen is where your party guests congregate, where the kids choose to do their homework and where the flurry of mornings occur.

what do you want for dinner?

Brought to you by Supporting Local Restaurants

W

illowcreek Grill and Raw Sushi are two happily married restaurants offering exactly that, homemade pub grub like burgers and nachos, as well as fresh, hand-rolled sushi. Originally two separate restaurants operated by the same owner, Willowcreek and Raw Sushi eventually combined into one operation when they realized that patrons consistently ordered from both sides to appease everyone in their party. A new second location of Willowcreek Grill and Raw Sushi has taken over the space where The Dish used to be on 10th Street. The owner Brian McGill, who had owned and operated The Dish, decided that downtown needed a grill and sushi spot. After playing around with a few concepts, he finally realized that he could replicate what he was already successfully doing. Though the downtown location will have a few different menu items, you can be certain to find the same eclectic menu as the Vista location.

which typically includes at least one local favorite. During the summer, both locations open their patio doors offering a relaxing atmosphere where diners can enjoy the weather. The Vista Location offers live music every Wednesday, while the 10th Street location has live music the first Thursday of the month. Both also offer sushi classes which allow you to eat all you can roll while learning the tricks of the trade. Inquire at the restaurant for dates and times. So if the question in your house is always, “what do you want for dinner?” add Willowcreek Grill and Raw Sushi to your list of regular food stops.

Raw Sushi uses fresh fish mostly from Hawaii, and the Willowcreek fare keeps their ingredients as local as possible, using bread from Gaston’s bakery, coffee from Dawson Taylor, products from City Peanut, and they also make all their desserts in-house. The Vista location is filled with a regular clientele who come by to visit their favorite servers or bartenders, giving it a local feel. It’s close proximity to the airport and hotels make it a great spot for travelers looking for something more unique than the average chain restaurant. Brian anticipates building a local following at the downtown location as well. Along with great food, Willowcreek focuses on good beer and wine. They make sure to keep an updated wine list and also feature six rotating beer taps,

Sprawling Estate in Eagle

FRENCH COUNTRY HOME OFFERS LUXURIOUS LIVING ARTICLE RACHEL BENNETT

C

all me a romantic, but I've always thought the city of Eagle was a bit whimsical and just a touch

outside of reality. The sprawl of the town, it's reputation, the lifestyle it represents—all of these things contribute to an ideal location and way of life for many people, including myself. Just south of State Street, tucked back behind Honalee Farms, off a cul-de-sac shared with just one other house in the private community of Rivervine sits 7049 W. Avignon Lane. To get to this sprawling estate, you have to cross a stone bridge with carriage lights that takes you over a manmade pond. With the pastel lights of dusk or dawn backlighting the French country home, you're transported to that place just outside of reality that I knew existed in Eagle. The home sits on an acre of land, with mature landscaping, an east-facing view and its own private water access to the lake behind. The heated pool sits on a slight incline above the small lake to create, what I like to call, an Idaho infinity pool. A home like this was built to awe family and friends, with the ability to comfortably host any size and type of social event. The 6,064-square-foot interior is open and spacious with a formal dining room and open living area. Entertaining features include a game room, theater room, large covered back patio with stamped and colored concrete, an outdoor kitchen with stainless steel appliances and an impressive selection of covering and shade options, a heated and tiled pool, as well as a natural gas fire table. And let's not forget the family of swans near the private beach. Even with the amount of opulence it offers, there is an overwhelming sense of comfort, hominess and livability with the breathtaking ability to make anyone who steps inside feel instantly and completely at home; there is no wasted space in this six bedroom, four bath house.

1. Mix warm water, yeast, oil and sugar. Let stand 15 minutes. 2. Add the eggs, salt and flour. Add enough flour so that it is a soft dough, but not too sticky to the touch. 3. Mix well. Do not let raise! 4. Roll out a rectangle the size of a big cookie sheet. Spread with soft butter. 5. Mix remaining sugar and cinnamon together. Sprinkle and spread over butter. Sprinkle with raisins or nuts, if desired. 6. Roll tightly lengthwise, so you have one long roll. Mark 12 2-inch rolls. Cut with floss or thread. 7. Place on a coated cookie sheet. Let rise 10 minutes while the oven is preheating to 400 degrees. 8. Bake 15-20 minutes. Cool and frost. Makes 12 large cinnamon rolls.
