n 1592, Shakespeare achieved his first masterpiece on stage with Richard III. The Tempest, Shakespeare’s last completed play, was performed in 1611. 1720 marks the year the symphony began to develop as a musical form, deriving from the overtures of operas. In 1763, 7-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began a three-year concert tour of Europe. The ballet Swan Lake premiered at the Bolshoi in Moscow in 1877. The performing arts are rich in history and timeless beauty.

Boise is home to a plethora of performing arts venues. Our community is very fortunate to have nationally renowned theater and performing arts available year-round for the enrichment of our families.

ADA COUNTY CORONER'S OFFICE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED The Ada County Coroner’s Office has become only the second coroner’s office in the nation to hold dual accreditation with the National Association of Medical Examiners and the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners.

The coroner’s office received the IAC&ME accreditation in July and received the NAME accreditation February 19.

Receiving NAME accreditation means the coroner’s office is operating within the highest standards for medical examiners and coroners in administration, forensics and investigations.

When the gardens behind The Chateau are in full swing, its bounty of vegetables, herbs and even flowers can be found in the dishes served. Roghani and Roshan are emphatic about sustainability, supporting local business, giving back to the earth and providing a Zen-like quality to anyone who walks through the doors. Stress leaves your body walking into the foyer alone.

Every part of the restaurant and main structure, from the ornate doors–one of which is 400 years old—interior and exterior design, wall coverings and the small to large-sized event rooms has been plotted, planned and made a reality by Roghani and her team. In the garden walkway, Roghani and daughter say there is a design weaved together in the form of a cross, peace sign and crescent. Oh! Did I mention the artesian well on the premises too?

Since opening their doors, they have served the French ambassador and held weddings, anniversaries, various tea parties and the mayor of Eagle’s inaugural speech. Roshan says she even hosted a yoga class in one of the rooms. Though the pricing of Le Coq d’Or’s menu is comparable to other high-end restaurants in the Treasure Valley, if you look at the entire realm of the experience, service, food and wine quality with this selection, there is no comparison. The Roghanis even have bottles of their new wines on the shelf.

The funny thing is, while I was interviewing Roghani and Roshan, it dawned upon me I had written a fictional story awhile back of a restaurant which I always imagined I would go to one day encompassing some of the same nuances of a multitude of European countries under one roof. Though I was born with the traveling bug, I can say with The Chateau and Le Coq d’Or just a short drive away I can quell the bug and feel like a Bond girl—all without losing my luggage or dealing with the TSA. hough Boise is tucked into the mountains and may be most known for fly-fishing, trail hiking or amazing ski slopes just a short drive

away, the secret is quickly coming out that it is also a well-curated cultural hub. People of a community are brought together by the arts, and it offers one of the biggest reasons why people don’t just move here but stay here. Every day of the week you are bound to find something exciting, whether it’s a musician playing cello on Eighth Street, a contemporary play written by a local author or a concerto being performed by the talented Boise Philharmonic. The arts are the heartbeat of this city and will lift you out of the daily grind, perhaps when you least expect it.

It is hard to describe in words. I’ve been involved in music my entire life. It is so wonderful and can be described as a tonic for one’s health, especially in the nonsense of the world today. It is in some ways my cultural epicenter. I’m a judge, so listening to the Boise Philharmonic is my cultural oasis; it is an amazing way to temper everything I do in my professional life.

WHAT DOES THE BOISE PHILHARMONIC MEAN TO YOU?

I started going to concerts in 1990 and have been on the board since 1993. I’ve been involved in making it work.

One of mankind’s greatest achievements is classical music. It represents something humans have stumbled on, and it takes your heart and soul to places that your life can’t. A symphony can take you to a specific time and place and helps to preserve a history that we can relate to today.

DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE BOISE PHILHARMONIC PERFORMANCE.

There is a Russian composer from the late nineteenth century who composed a piece called Pictures at an Exhibition that was performed by the Boise Philharmonic this past February. The composer, Mussorgsky, had a friend who was a painter and an architect who died. He went to a retrospective exhibition of this friend, then wrote a piece based on the visit to the gallery, looking at the pictures. It is a very moving piece.

Honestly, it helps me to believe that there’s hope for the human race! You don’t have to know a thing about the symphony in order to come to the symphony hall and enjoy the music.

Many non-Idahoans may think Boise is an isolated city, and though it may be geographically isolated, this venue proves that the city is well-connected to arts and culture and brings high-caliber shows to the Treasure Valley.

When I relocated to Boise, I was happily surprised at the community’s commitment to the arts and is one of the reasons I made Boise my home. I recall a meeting where Mrs. (Esther) Simplot explained her passion for our dance academy, that the ballet students are not the children that get in trouble—it keeps them focused and healthy. I believe that is true for any young person involved in arts, sports or academics.

Our dancers are also exceptional athletes! I attend rehearsals occasionally, and the strength, stamina and devotion impresses me every single time. Megan Hearn smiles whether she’s in rehearsal or on stage. Elizabeth Baretto has her own line of custom dancewear that is growing quickly. And one spilled a beverage on me (twice) because dancers talk with their hands. But when you see them onstage—it’s as though they float on air. They are artists on and off the stage.

HOW HAS THE BALLET ENRICHED YOU AND YOUR FAMILY’S LIVES?

I grew up in a modest middle-class family with more than a few siblings, yet my parents insisted we had music and dance lessons; they saved so we could attend performances from arts organizations in our community every year. A lot of my exposure came from school field trips, and the ballet offers experiences to groups that may not have exposure to the arts. Over 1,800 students were able to see The Nutcracker and students from The Learning Lab (a family literacy program) were able to attend performances. That exposure builds dreams and transports people like it did for me, and is one of the major reasons I love my work with the Ballet.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE WITH THE BALLET?

(Creative director) Peter Anastos’ reputation allows us to perform works from great American ballet royalty like Balanchine and Twyla Tharp. Very few ballet companies outside of New York ever have these opportunities. I also love that our dancers showcase their own work during our New Dance performances. They are responsible for every aspect of the performance: choreography, costume, lighting and music. I believe that it’s another avenue for their artistic expression; it helps keep amazing talent at Ballet Idaho.

AN UPSCALE SPORTS BAR Last Friday night, my wife and I stopped by Tap & Cask on Broadway Avenue for a date night. The first thing we noticed was the sheer volume of patrons…this place was packed. Every seat, bar stool and table was filled with satisfied patrons. Next, we noticed the flat screen TV’s on the walls, 55 of them. We had our choice of sports, country music videos and much more to watch while we waited for our table. We arrived right in between happy hours that run from 3pm to 6pm and 9pm to close every day.

The staff was friendly and attentive and brought us to our table after just a few minutes. After our drinks arrived and our appetizers were ordered, we were welcomed by the general manager, Marshall Myers.

Since this was our first visit, I asked Marshal what the Tap & Cask was all about. “The Tap & Cask is an upscale sports bar with a twist. We took a sports bar, and combined it with a barrel house and a high-class pub.”

When we asked about the menu, Marshall beamed as he described the high-quality food, USDA Choice steaks, and hand crafted menu items using fresh, not frozen ingredients. He explained the quality standards of the restaurant, “As a locally owned and operated restaurant, we don’t cut corners. Nothing is overly priced for the quality you are getting.”

As I was admiring the surroundings, my wife said, “we should invite some of our friends and come back, this place is nice.” When I saw the Sunday Brunch menu with multiple types of Benedicts, Chorizo and Baked Eggs, and Belgian Waffles, I knew we would be back.

My wife ordered the Fajita Steak Salad with tender grilled steak, and I had the Black & Blue Ribeye, blackened on a skillet and covered in a garlic Gorgonzola sauce. Both dishes were amazing.

When you stop by for the first time, Marshall recommends the Boise “Crunch” Burger or The Sloppy Suzy Burger. Both are made fresh and are unique. Marshall also recommended everyone try a few samples of beer to make sure you find something you like. He said, “no one knows about our large beer selection. We have a good wide range of local beers as well and the traditional ones. We spend a lot of time sourcing our very good craft beers.”

s a former makeup artist for 30 years, I simply adore color. Years before obtaining real training, in my eager-to-look-grown-up-in-high-school years, I used

practically every shade on my face—at one time. Clowns came to me for tips.

Tempering my hue addiction taught me a vital lesson: color, like power, can corrupt absolutely if not used wisely. Now I am all grown up, respectfully using and appreciating shades of my fancy to warm a room, add some pop to a meal or to me.

Colors can evoke an emotion, memory or they can inspire, soothe and ignite a soul. They can scream passion, opulence or tranquillity. I wanted to learn from an interior designer’s perspective how they perceive various shades, how it transforms a room and perhaps the people in it.

Lyn Williams, of Lyn’s Design Style in Boise, and I chatted a bit about her work, the skinny on shade selection and what it means to be the Pantone color of the year.

Boise Lifestyle (BL): As a designer, what colors do you find people gravitate toward?

Lyn Williams (LW): Very few people are willing to say they want red in their

rooms. Most are comfy with a neutral palette. When you point out a shade in their shirts or pillows, then they realize yes, we do want color.

BL: Are there any colors which you discourage your clients from using?

LW: No. I named my company Lyn’s Design Style because, in the end, I want my clients to feel as if they designed the room with their own style.

BL: Every year Pantone comes out with their pick for what color is on-trend.

LW: Pantone is the company that created the color matching system. This year’s color is a kind of leafy green. I am not sure how they select it, but if you don’t want Courtesy of Radion Photography 28

BL: What colors excite you?

LW: I love black and white, grays and neutrals. I bring in pieces with texture to add balance. Soothing colors like blues and greens I use for individual rooms.

In kid’s playrooms, I select fun, vibrant colors which stimulate and encourage.

BL: Have you ever encountered a place where it seemed color happened to be grossly overused?

LW: Personally, I have not, but I did see a picture of the master bedroom in a house which was entirely done in yellow. Everything. There was a time 20 years ago, you had all white walls in your house, and you couldn’t wait to paint them.

Now, there is a lot you can do with a clean white background.

One can get all caught up in trying to keep up with the “must-have” colors, but if you have trepidation, the key seems to be to pepper in the shade in question with accessories and let them blend into the area. If the color doesn't mesh with your decorative groove, you can go back to your original

color choices or choose something else. The cool thing about color is you can experiment with pillows, jars, candles, etc. and not be tied down to your choice.

BLACK—Black often stands for secrecy. It is associated with sophistication and elegance. A black-tie event is formal.

CAMP HODIA WHERE DIABETES AND WILDERNESS MEET ARTICLE KRISTEN LYNCH

C

hildren and teens throughout the country are familiar with the traditions of summer camp. For some kids, cabins and counselors are just a part of a routine summer vacation. But what if you were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a young child and have never had the opportunity to spend time away from your parents?

Juvenile diabetes can be a very stressful diagnosis for kids and their families. Some children or teens can feel isolated and depressed, dealing with the daily duress of medications and insulin shots. This is where Camp Hodia steps in.

Founded in 1978 by registered nurse Don Scott, Camp Hodia was created out of a desire for kids to connect with other kids who are also diabetic. Scott, a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, envisioned a camp that encouraged kids to live full and productive lives while also recapturing part of their lost childhood. Nestled beneath the rugged Sawtooths, Camp Hodia has evolved to include a younger kids and teen camp, a winter ski camp and off-season retreats. The camps are fully staffed with a team of doctors, nurses and counselors and are filled with activities like arts and crafts, horseback riding, swimming, picnics and hiking. However, unlike most summer youth camps, health and diabetes management is the first and foremost focus.

Most counselors might agree that food can be the source of contention among campers, but the staff at Camp Hodia keeps their menus diabetes-friendly, using the opportunity to teach kids about healthy habits. However, just because their diets are restrictive doesn’t mean that they can’t splurge every now and then. After all, summer camps and treats go hand in hand and campers at Camp Hodia can also enjoy typical summer camp treats like ice cream and cookies—something that is factored into their diabetes management plan.

passionately about his juvenile diabetes camp. According to Scott, the camp offered a little respite from hospitals and treatments, nurturing a positive experience outside of the medical setting.

“One day (Don) asked me to come check out their diabetes camp, " Christensen said. "I said, ‘I’d be happy to do that,' but it was up in the Sawtooths, so I planned on just coming up for the weekend.”

Christensen didn’t know then that this little weekend trip would be the catalyst for a decades-long commitment.

“I just showed up there on a Friday afternoon, and just happened to arrive with the closing ceremony and dance. It was so much fun and heartening. I just became hooked!”

Most of Christensen’s previous experience with his patients involved a more regimented relationship. For the first time, Christensen was able to see these kids out of a medical setting, enjoying a summer camp as any other American teenager would.

Christensen's role far exceeds just his profession. He participates in all camping events, is on the board for Camp Hodia and directs the Wilderness camp, a backpacking trip for teens.

“The Wilderness camp gives these older kids greater confidence and independence to do things that their peers do.”

Scott, unfortunately, was not able to see how Camp Hodia has evolved. In 2011, he was tragically killed in a mountain climbing accident. But due to Scott’s passion and commitment, Camp Hodia remains resolute in providing this important and positive experience for Idaho’s diabetic kids, regardless of their ability to pay.

Most people do not realize the toll that diabetes can take on the entire family. Medical treatments and costs are expensive and relentless. An opportunity for a child with diabetes to have freedom over their disease gives them a sense of confidence and purpose and also allows their family to take a break from the disease’s negative effects.

“There have been many times over the years where I have seen the value this experience brings to the kids and their parents. Many of these kids have never been away from their parents, especially overnight," Christensen says. "It is as much a growing experience for the parents as it is for the kids.”

Banana Bread with a Twist ARTICLE MISSY WILL

O

ne of the smells that remind me of my home is my Aunt Dru's banana

bread. I make this when I want to bring back memories of my childhood, and I am sure it will for you as well.

• 1/2 cup butter or a little more • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs, beaten • 3 bananas finely crushed (for a bit more moist and delicious, try 4 bananas) • 1 1⁄2 cups flour (you can use gluten-free; almond and coconut flour work well) • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt, kosher • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (I use the paste) • 2/3 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Cream together butter and sugar.

2. Add eggs and crushed bananas.

3. Combine well.

4. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla and walnuts.

5. Mix until combined. Do not overmix.

6. Pour into greased and floured loaf pan.

7. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes.

8. Keeps well refrigerated, but it will not last long.
