A Bigger Slice of the Pie Jim Balis grew up in the pizza capital of the US – New York City. Every day after school, he was dropped off in front of a pizza place, where he grabbed a slice before heading home.

All through high school he worked and cooked at various restaurants, where he became fascinated with the food industry. He moved to Boise, and soon cooking became central to his family life.

After having kids, Balis realized that Boise needed an upscale pizza place, where parents could have a nice meal, while still being able to bring the kids along. LuLu’s Pizza opened on Bogus Basin Rd in the North End in 2006 and has been growing ever since. Not only will you find a great selection of wine and local beer, but you’ll also find a magnetic wall ¬– which is usually where the young ones spend most of their time before eating a slice or two. This neighborhood spot is bright and comfortable, and would make for a great stop on your way to the slopes, or a friendly place to grab a beer and a slice while catching up on work. They are also one of the few small pizza shops that delivers in case the Boise winter keeps you indoors.

In 2007, nearby Superb Sushi was closing its storefront but still wanted to make and sell its product. They approached Balis about setting up a spot in the pizza place where they could make sushi and sell it alongside the pizza. He loved the idea, and realized that LuLu’s could appeal to more diners or families with mixed tastes. The concept proved to be successful, and Balis says he would absolutely use this model if he ever opened a second LuLu’s.

Having been embedded in the North End neighborhood for over 10 years now, LuLu’s Pizza loves giving back to the community in any way they can. They are a supporter of the Boise Bicycle Project, which comes as no surprise when you notice the vintage bikes decoratively hanging from the ceiling. They’ve also donated pizzas to Boise’s NPR every year since they opened, held fundraisers for the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, and can be found at almost every auction event around the neighborhood.

Balis employs lots of young people, many of which he’s seen grow up and head off to college, and is proud that he and his staff treat every customer like family.

Though making pizza from scratch using the highest quality ingredients is what they do best, LuLu’s enjoys serving the community in a bigger way.

Below I have listed some options for activity that will encourage 2017 as a year of achievement instead of an inconvenience.

Crossfit CrossFit has gained an enormous following over recent years and along the way it has also suffered a lot of negativity. For sure, like in any discipline, there are bad practitioners, but in the right hands, CrossFit is a great way for anyone to become healthier and more functional. Its intensity makes it an efficient way to churn your way through calories and give your lungs the workout they need. Socially, CrossFit is great because it is community-based which a lot of people benefit from. It’s very common that people avoid exercise because of a lack of support or confidence; so being a part of something bigger such as the CrossFit community is only to help fix this issue.

THE BENEFITS OF DOING CROSSFIT:

+ The exercises you do within CrossFit are largely “compound” moves, which mean they recruit more muscle fibers and demand more from your energy systems. The aftermath of this is heightened energy expenditure and an oxygen deficit. It's possible that recovery time could take up to an entire day. This also spikes your metabolism! + The intensity of the circuit style training means that you spend a lot of time moving in and out of your aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. This helps develop your VO2Max and anaerobic threshold, making you a more rounded athlete. By increasing performance in these fields your lungs and heart will become healthier and conditioned with improvement to your breathing. If you’re looking for a route to a leaner, more muscular body with the added health benefits, CrossFit could be the way to go.

The demanding nature of CrossFit means that you will require certain things as part of your diet: + High protein to boost recovery + Enough carbohydrates to sustain performance and energy.

Below is a sample meal plan I would recommend for somebody who’s practicing CrossFit: MEAL 1 – 1/2 cup of oats, ½ banana, a handful of blueberries and 1

YOGA If we go to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and pick something more relaxing and attainable to more people, yoga is another great form of activity to keep you healthy. Just like Crossfit, I do yoga myself to keep flexible and remain injury free. It’s also a very therapeutic practice which allows your mind to shut off from the outside world and focus on yourself, lower cortisol and become more in touch with your soul. Like Crossfit, it is largely community-based which makes it the perfect activity for someone who likes to have support around them and a source of encouragement.

The main reasons why I like yoga as a form of exercise: + The control needed to develop and sustain some of the routines means that the core is always worked. This becomes an amazing foundation for a strong core, which significantly reduces the risk of injuries, especially the back. From a personal perspective, it also helps develop your abdominal muscles, so you appear more toned. + While it’s a far less energy intensive activity compared to something like Crossfit, don’t be fooled. It can still make you burn plenty of calories with the static holds and constant engagement of muscles to keep a stable position. + Everybody today needs to become more flexible because most of us are sitting every day for far too long creating all sorts of imbalances within our posterior chain. This makes us vulnerable to injuries and posture issues. Yoga is widely used by the world’s most elite sportsmen, including rugby and NFL players for this very reason!

Just like CrossFit, the exercise is only half the battle. The results come from your diet; if yoga is your main physical outlet, then your diet will need to be adjusted accordingly. Here is a sample diet: MEAL 1 – 4oz of low-fat Greek yogurt, ½ cup of blueberries and ½

Outdoor Leisure Growing up in rural Wales, I loved to get outside on my bike or go hiking whenever I could. These days while living in Boise, I do the same.

Along with that, I also love to go for a swim in the stunning lakes which surround us. These are all leisure activities available to all of us that can be a lot of fun and amount to a lot of exercise without noticing it.

This is something I always try and encourage people to do more of - leisure activities they enjoy that don’t really feel like exercise.

Basketball, tennis, golf, softball, soccer and other team activities can be socially rewarding while keeping you accountable. During the summer I often go hiking within the Sawtooths with a few friends.

I always have an amazing time, and without thinking about it, I can easily burn well over 1,500 calories with the hike. Do the same.

Exercise doesn’t always have to feel like a regimented activity.

DINING EXPERIENCE Boise’s brew scene is booming, but it has really only developed in the past couple of years. Edge Brewing Company opened in February of 2014 in an unassuming location on the cusp of that boom, and has been growing ever since.

Located on the west side of town on North Steelhead Rd. near the Milwaukee and Emerald intersection, Edge serves creative “bar food” that makes for a great compliment to their beer. Some breweries focus more on the beer than the food, or some restaurants might focus more on the food than the beer, but the Edge team knows how to pack a punch on both fronts. Their BBQ sauce is made with their imperial stout and their house ranch dressing is infused with hops. Though they tend to change their menu about twice a year, some favorites include the Edge kettle chip nachos, covered in cheese and a mound of beer braised brisket, as well as the bourbon barrel or ginger habanero chicken wings. In addition, you’ll find salads, burgers, sandwiches and some mac and cheese options for big kids! Cooking with local ingredients whenever possible is part of their standard, using everything from Snake River Farms for their pork to My Family Tradition BBQ for their homemade ketchup and apple cider vinegar.

They keep about 20 rotating taps in their bar, which usually consist of some local favorites as well as their new beers. The Hop Kiss Session Ale is a go-to beer for Edge fans, and will soon come in cans once Edge begins their first canning process. The Budunka-monk, a new Belgian Strong Ale, or the Quadricorn, a darker Belgian Ale, might be good choices for those looking to try something different.

Edge Brewing Company is a fun place for a quick afternoon lunch or a weekend night out. Make sure to stay up on their events as well, like their Octoberfest featuring a cornhole tournament, or the vintage car show which they hold every August. Their integration into the Boise community also means that they feature local live music every Wednesday (along with some touring acts) and also sponsor local organizations through benefit nights. If you can’t make it in to their restaurant, find their taps at many other establishments including restaurants and some grocery stores’ growler fill stations. And soon, their cans will be hitting the shelves in case that growler is a bit too clunky to lug around!

High in water-soluble fiber, known to lower blood fats, and stave off hunger, these gems are fabulous in pies, cakes, breads, well just about anything becomes better with apples.

here’s a reason Uber has chosen Volvo for their plans of having driverless pickup vehicles; Volvo is already honing in on that level of technology. Although Tesla has already disrupted the auto industry with its fully electric, self-driving cars, Volvo is a quiet contender in the luxury vehicle sector. Their S90 may be a more affordable option to Tesla’s Model S. If you haven’t checked lately, Volvos are no longer box shaped and driven only by the stereotypical “professorial” types. They are still one of the safest car brands on the road, and the 2016 models are equipped with the newest technology that assists in everything from staying within the yellow road lines, to “reading” the speed limit, to detecting pedestrians and large animals even in the dark. Volvo is leading the way in understanding the modern driver. By 2020, Volvo hopes to be producing vehicles that will avoid anyone getting killed or majorly injured when in an accident.

The 2016 S90 is a large luxury sedan, essentially replacing the S80, but is slightly bigger and redesigned. This car has more features than any one person could ever find a use for, but you’ll find that the well-designed interior and Apple carplay infotainment screen are only the tip of the iceberg. Volvo’s motto is “Designed around you,” and is perhaps more utilitarian than some of the other luxury brands. Many of the features you’ll find are to ensure undistracted driving. The position 30

of the touchscreen is made so that the driver has easy access to it, in addition to responding to voice commands like, “I’m cold” or "I'm hot," to automatically raise or lower the interior temperature.

Volvo’s commitment to the environment means that you won’t find an 8-cylinder, or even 6-cylinder engine, in any of their 2016 scalable product architecture (SPA) platform models. Even their biggest vehicle, the XC 90, has a 4-cylinder engine. But the quick pickup powered by a 2 liter, 316 horsepower (option) engine indicates that Volvo hasn’t taken away any of its dynamic capability.

Volvos are made in Sweden, and the impeccable European quality is something you won’t find in many cars today. Of course, the cost of shipping vehicles overseas is expensive, and perhaps why they aren’t bigger players in the US auto market. This is partly the reason why Volvo broke ground on a South Carolina factory last year. In the next few years, you may see as many Volvos on the road as BMWs or Fords.
