The Most Fashionable Time of the Year

Dear Readers,

We are entering one of my favorite times of the year, and it is not just because September happens to be my birthday month. I am absolutely delighted to present our Style issue! It offers us the perfect opportunity to showcase many of our retailers who bring the latest fashions and leverage their positions to make a positive impact. We are honored to be the Media Sponsor for the Boerne Retailers’ Style Show & Shopping Event (“Lights! Camera! Fashion!,” p. 30), and I am thrilled to serve as the emcee this year. This event has always been a highlight, reflecting the generous spirits of our fabulous retailers who work tirelessly to support the Kendall County Women’s Shelter.

We are excited to introduce you to Happy Haus (“Together In Style,” p. 34), a retailer that brilliantly merges fashion and philanthropy in an engaging and dynamic way. Their presentation of the latest trend, ‘Dopamine Dressing,’ will captivate you.

Formal events are always thrilling occasions, and finding the perfect outfit that is distinctive and reflective of our personal style is essential. We partnered with Lesli Dacy, the founder of LD Bridal and a Boerne women’s formalwear expert, who understands the importance of finding something that truly fits your unique style (“Up Next,” p. 22).

Speaking of personal style, my daughter Eliana and I had a fantastic day with our style contributor, Steely Lott. Her sharp eye demonstrated how different generations can achieve fashion harmony and look fabulous together (“Best Fashion Friends,” p. 48).

Have you ever read about upland hunting? Prepare to be enthralled by the rich, multidimensional experience awaiting you at Joshua Creek Ranch (“The Beauty. The Tradition. The Lifestyle.” p. 76)

A few weeks ago, my husband and I joined friends for dinner at Tardif’s Restaurant. By the time we finished the main course, we were convinced that the exceptional experience created by Jean Tardif deserved a place in our Style issue. We are delighted that he agreed, and we invite you to read the story and make a reservation to experience Tardif’s elegant dining (“Chic Cozy Cuisine,” p. 70).

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Kelly Scully of Finishing Touches Interior Design for welcoming us into her world (“Dedication & Design,” p. 58). Kelly is a remarkable woman with a passion for design and a commitment to sharing her expertise with others. There is even more in this issue that we are excited for you to explore.

See you at the Style Show!

STAY CURRENT ON THE HOTTEST TRENDS IN WOMEN’S FORMAL FASHION

When we talk about formal garments and gowns, we talk about genuinely haute couture-level pieces. The literal translation is “high sewing,” but Lesli Dacy of LD Bridal says you can just picture Parisian runways. “Haute couture is the most expensive part of fashion,” says Dacy, “These are handcrafted garments.” These collections only show in Paris twice per year, and only certain houses receive approval from the prestigious Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode to walk their styles.

In both bridal and formal gowns, we find examples of haute couture closer to home. LD Bridal specializes in both of these genres, but we’ve asked Dacy to forecast what’s coming in the world of women’s formalwear. So whether you’re prepping for your big day or a glittering night, we’ve got a look at what you’ll see at the formal forefront this fall.

Mac Duggal Fuchsia Feather Formal Gown, $877

While black is here to stay and is a timeless color choice, Dacy says we are seeing a resurgence in jewel tones. Think in terms of ruby reds, emerald greens, and sapphire blues, amongst others. Due to their seasonal color association, Dacy says that these colors usually come back around each year in the winter, and we can count on them to do that again this year.

Say “bonjour ” once again to flowers—but not necessarily in the way you’d think. It’s not floral prints that are surging, but it’s floral appliqués that are trending. These elements are created to look like actual flowers attached to the gown, Dacy says, and they are part of the “coquette” fashion aesthetic that’s very much having a moment. This trend encompasses all of the other hyper-feminine motifs out there: everything like bows, ribbons, frills, an abundance of tulle, and, of course, florets. Designers such as Giambattista Valli exemplified quite the floral appliqué variety this past summer. Dacy says the collection is so stunning that she recommends looking up the collection just for fun.

Despite years in the business, Dacy says she still gets surprised sometimes. And this season, it’s by bustiers. These classic pieces of structured shapewear “used to be worn underneath the garment,” Dacy says, “but now, they are more elegant and wearable.” The sophisticated bustiers we see today accentuate the feminine form and have rapidly risen to stardom. This is dually reflected on the rack and on the runway: Schiaparelli and Jean Paul Gaultier are just a couple of designers who hopped on this couture trend for shows this past January and June.

While Dacy knows what’s up and coming as far as what’s trending in Paris, she says that doesn’t always work for everyone here at home. She emphasizes that finding something that fits you and your personal style is the most important. “You grab what fits you best,” says Dacy. She says that while you can always incorporate the trends into your ensemble, there are ways to put your personal touch on it. Dacy always says the trick is “not to fall in the trap of fashion, but to get what fits you best.”

Lesli Dacy, the founder of Boerne’s LD Bridal, is a Boerne women’s formalwear expert. She studied fashion design in a city with some of the world’s richest fashion history: Milan. After moving to Boerne with her husband and three daughters, Dacy opened LD Bridal to keep her love for fashion alive. The boutique specializes in both bridal and formalwear. While Dacy adores haute couture and lives for the hottest styles on the runway, she absolutely loves helping each of her clients find the pieces that are perfect for them so that they can feel like the stunning, elegant, and beautiful person they are every day.

LIGHTS!CAM E RA!FASHION!

Cameras will flash, and smiles will shine bright at the Boerne Retailers’ Style Show & Shopping Event. Since the first show in September 2019, Boerne’s fashion-forward community has come together to celebrate style and raise funds for the Kendall County Women’s Shelter.

After the initial show in 2019, the event has become a yearly tradition, fostering community between vendors, fashionistas, and the entire Boerne area. This year’s event will feature 12 vendors, all of which are based in the Boerne area. These boutiques and stylists will use their time to highlight their skills and designs on the runway, as well as make their clothes and accessories available to attendees of the show. Organizers say the event provides a platform for local businesses to gain exposure and connect directly with the community. Join In This Annual Event Where Local Stars Shine and Philanthropy Hits the Runway

What sets this fashion show apart is its local emphasis and inclusivity. Instead of watching high-profile models strut down the runway, each boutique selects models from among their clients, staff, and friends, ensuring a personal and relatable representation of their styles. This inclusive approach reflects the event’s commitment to showcasing the beauty and diversity of the Boerne community. The emcee for this year’s event is Tara Bové, the publisher of Boerne Lifestyle Magazine.

With each business targeting different demographics, there is sure to be something for everyone. The show will include everything from kids' clothes to bridal, western, workwear, and more. This year’s show also brings three new participants: LD Bridal, Hey Love, and Alene’s Boutique.

Various local partners make the event possible, including the venue, The Bevy Hotel. Its ballroom transforms into a full runway fashion show with small pop-up shops all around. Cavender Cares is another key partner, providing swag bags for VIP attendees. These partnerships are crucial in making the event a memorable experience for all participants and are vital to its overall success.

Advance tickets for the September 21st event start at $65 and will be available until the 15th. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $85. Alongside the base tickets, a limited number of VIP tickets are also available, starting at $150 for a single ticket and $500 for a bundle of four. The VIP experience includes early access shopping for the event, exclusive seating, and a swanky swag bag. And you don’t want to miss the after-party at Pure Country BBQ & Grill from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

As the event has grown in popularity and success, so has its impact. In its first year, the Style Show raised $8,000, and the total has increased each year. Even in 2020, when the pandemic forced the show’s cancellation, donations continued, and support for the Women’s Shelter grew. In 2023, over $30,000 was donated, and organizers hope for an even more fruitful event this year. The Boerne Retailers’ Style Show & Shopping Event is not just a fashion show—it is a celebration of community, caring, and local style.  boerneretailersstyleandshop.com

ARTICLE BY CAROLINE HEIBERG PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULA VM

In the heart of San Antonio lies a hidden gem that is leading the charge on a burgeoning fashion trend with an all-too-appropriate name: Happy Haus. This boutique isn’t just another clothing store—it’s a retreat of joy, color, and purpose. Specializing in the concept of “dopamine dressing,” Happy Haus brings together the power of fashion and philanthropy in a fun and compelling way.

THE CONCEPT OF DOPAMINE DRESSING

“Dopamine dressing” is a revolutionary approach to fashion that highlights the connection between what we wear and how we feel. Happy Haus founder Danielle Kruciak says the concept is rooted in the idea that certain colors, patterns, and styles can stimulate the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with

pleasure and reward in the brain. By understanding the impact of colors, patterns, and textures on our mood, we can make intentional choices that boost happiness and confidence.

Happy Haus embraces this philosophy wholeheartedly, and it’s visible from the moment you enter the store. The collections are a carefully curated kaleidoscope of vibrant hues, playful patterns, and fun textures chosen to uplift, inspire, and evoke joy and positivity. The boutique’s commitment to this fashion philosophy is evident in every aspect of its operation, from the cheerful decor and friendly staff to the thoughtful selection of items. By embracing the principles of dopamine dressing, Happy Haus offers an environment that goes beyond mere aesthetics and aims to promote genuine well-being.

A BOUTIQUE WITH A PURPOSE

Beyond its commitment to style, Happy Haus is dedicated to positively impacting the community. The boutique donates a portion of all its earnings to a nonprofit co-founded by Kruciak, Mission Haus Foundation. Happy Haus is a for-profit, online, and brick-andmortar shop that acts as a vessel to give back financially to the community. Primarily funded by the work of Happy Haus and other enterprises, this philanthropic initiative focuses on supporting local charities and community projects through financial means, scholarships, and internships.

“DOPAMI NE DRESSING”ISA REVOLUTIO THE CON NECTION BETWEEN WHAT WE W APPROAC H TO FASHIONTHAT HIGHLIGH AND HOW WE FEEL.

Mission Haus Foundation funds various efforts: community support programs, 18-26 youth programs, and support for individuals who have aged out of foster care that meets financial needs and assists with long-term strategic planning. The foundation is able to effectively provide for the community by working closely with Christian Assistance Ministries, The Ranch in nearby Leakey, Texas, and other referral sources like churches or women’s centers. By shopping at Happy Haus, customers can get an added dose of dopamine, knowing they’re contributing to meaningful causes and supporting organizations and individuals within the greater San Antonio community.

Although Happy Haus and the Mission Haus Foundation are separate entities, they share a heart and purpose: community. In its commitment to fostering a sense of community, the boutique has developed a business model that serves a larger goal. If you’re buying, you’re buying with a purpose.

THE INTERSECTION OF NONPROFIT AND FOR-PROFIT

The Mission Haus Foundation and Happy Haus exemplify the powerful synergy between for-profit and nonprofit enterprises, illustrating how a successful business can drive significant social change. By donating 10% of its earnings to Mission Haus Foundation, Happy Haus ensures its success directly benefits the local community. This innovative model allows the boutique to support a wide breadth of programs, creating a ripple effect of positive change and influence.

The intersection of Happy Haus’ success and Mission Haus Foundation’s philanthropic goals demonstrates that businesses can thrive while also fulfilling much-needed social goals. This approach sets a precedent for other companies to integrate social responsibility into their core operations. Through Mission Haus Foundation, Happy Haus proves that fashion can be a force for good, seamlessly blending profit with purpose to uplift individuals and strengthen the community.

LOOKING AHEAD

Dopamine dressing transcends traditional fashion, merging style with the science of happiness to create what Kruciak believes is a transformative experience. Happy Haus embodies this innovative approach, offering a vibrant selection of clothing that uplifts and empowers its customers. By prioritizing joyful colors, playful patterns, and luxurious textures, Happy Haus ensures every purchase is a step towards enhanced well-being. Moreover, through its philanthropic efforts with Mission Haus Foundation, the boutique not only enriches individual lives but also strengthens the wider San Antonioarea community.

ONARY WEAR HTS

Embracing dopamine dressing at Happy Haus means dressing for joy, confidence, and a more significant cause. As Happy Haus continues to grow and evolve, its mission remains clear: making a meaningful impact on the community and making every purchase a celebration of personal style and giving back.

BACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL!

Mums Still Reign Over Texas Homecoming

ARTICLE BY BRANDI JAMESON
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISON
This Floral Powerhouse Shines as Big and Bright as Ever

In Texas, long-standing traditions shine as beacons of light. Friday night lights, that is. The high school football field is hallowed ground where the community comes together in school spirit to cheer their team to victory. And during one particular season every year, all that spirit and tradition takes the form of ostentatiously ribboned floral corsages known simply as “mums.”

Boerne mum artisan Misty Stout admits the hubbub is a bit crazy. “It’s wild, especially if you’re not from around here. But when you go to the games, and you see the kids so happy, it’s incredibly special.”

Stout owns That’s What She Said Mums Boerne, a company she began eight years ago after crafting her first arrangement for her oldest son’s homecoming date. She now creates custom mum and garter designs for approximately 350 teens each year alongside her husband, Chris, and a group of talented friends. “My favorites are the boys who come in, wanting to get their dates the best mum ever,” she smiles. “They’re my most particular customers.”

Heather McCoy—the owner of Boerne Homecoming Mums—is a decoration professional and amateur mum historian. McCoy says the tradition began at the University of Missouri in 1911. Baylor University was the first Lone Star school to join, with mums made of fresh chrysanthemums and a bit of ribbon. By the 1920s, high schools had adopted the ritual and eventually took it over. “Of course, once Texas got ahold of it, the whole thing blew up,” McCoy laughs. “Everything’s bigger in Texas.”

“The tradition used to be that a boy asked a girl to

homecoming...

Now? No rules. It’s 2024. We do what we want.” —Misty Stout

These days, parents buy mums for their daughters, friends exchange with each other, and sometimes groups of teens even craft them together. “The goal is to have one,” says McCoy. “Boys still ask girls, but the pressure is off. It doesn’t have to be a date thing as much as a friend thing.”

Today, Texas teens boldly exhibit their school pride in mums that have evolved from simple corsages to elaborate ribbon displays, with personalized imprinting and embellishments designed to highlight each personality. Silk flowers have replaced fresh, allowing these festive adornments to become forever keepsakes. Bedroom walls boast mum displays, each bigger and better than the year before, all decked out in school colors—except the senior-year mum. Custom dictates that this edition be white and silver only; and the whiter, the better. But size and grandeur are not the only things that have changed over the decades. “The tradition used to be that a boy asked a girl to homecoming, he gave her a mum, she gave him a garter,” explains Stout. “Now? No rules. It’s 2024. We do what we want.”

Both mum artisans warn prospective suitors not to delay ordering, as the demand is often greater than time allows, especially as the big day approaches. McCoy takes a limited number of reservations and offers DIY kits at crunch time.

In our ever-changing world, where lightning-fast social media trends dominate teen culture, it is hard to believe this 100+ year tradition steeped in good old-fashioned fun has not only survived but thrived. Stout credits Texas moms for sustaining the custom, allowing each new generation to embrace the fanfare. McCoy says the artisans' devotion to the craft has also helped carry it through. “We love seeing these kids light up when they pick up their mums,” McCoy says, smiling. “We love these kids, and we love what we do.”

Styling Ideas to Make Mom & Daughter Look Great Together

Moms and their girls are often best friends, but sometimes their styles just don’t get along. That doesn’t have to be true, though, as Boerne Lifestyle Publisher Tara Bové and her daughter Eliana prove. Boerne’s boutiques and style contributor Steely Lott’s sharp eye show us how the generations can find fashion peace and love their looks together.

TARA: SWEATER TOP // ELIANA: ROMPER

The Iron Hummingbird

These pieces can easily be worn in the summer and still be styled perfectly for fall! The light, knitted material and bright colors of the sweater top, along with the linen material of the romper, give that summer vibe. But pair the top with jeans and sneakers and the romper with cowboy boots and a denim jacket, these are taken into fall. Both of these outfits could be successfully swapped around to any age group!

TARA & ELIANA : SWEATER OUTFITS

Hey Love

These sweaters were both pieces each model picked themselves, which shows the versatility of a lightweight sweater— how it can be worn to the beach, to work, and more. Plus, with the Texas climate, they can be easily worn in the fall. These are the perfect outfits to add a colorful headband or a sassy bow. The possibilities are endless because every piece of these two outfits is interchangeable, proving they can be great for any age.

TARA: BROWN DRESS // ELIANA: JEANS AND BOOTS

The Iron Hummingbird

Tara looks chic, stylish, and ready for a work meeting or date night. Meanwhile, Eliana coordinates with this transitional outfit in jeans that elongate her legs and a tank that keeps things cool in this Texas heat. I initially imagined coordinating looks, but I love the pairing of something in which each woman is comfortable and feels like herself.

TARA: BONE PANTS W/PRINT TOP // ELIANA: BLACK DRESS

The fit of the dress Eliana is wearing is so in right now, especially paired with her sneakers or a summer sandal. Throw on a denim jacket or cardigan, and it can easily be worn in the fall. Tara’s pants are that “winter white” that you can wear all year round, and these pants will go with just about anything you have in your closet.

TARA: DENIM DRESS // ELIANA: PRINTED SKIRT

Hey Love

I specifically wanted Eliana and Tara to coordinate with these outfits so they’d have something perfect for family photos or a fun family outing. Tara’s denim dress is popular for any age, and the ruffle along the neckline, coupled with the bow in the back, adds the perfect feminine touch. The printed skirt on Eliana is part of a matching set, but we chose to pair it with a neutral bodysuit to show an outfit that Tara may steal from Eliana’s closet!

Design DEDICATION &

Spend a Day With Kelly Scully: Interior Designer, Entrepreneur, and Style Icon

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY

“The relationships with the clients are what keep me going and make me love being an interior designer. I love pleasing people and getting to know people intimately—they invite me into their lives, and I love it!”

For Kelly Scully of Finishing Touches Interior Design, even the most hectic days are full of beauty and meaning. She has been transforming spaces for 31 years, driven by a passion for design and a desire to share her experiences with others. We spent a day with her to learn more about her world and discovered that she’s not just a designer but a mentor and a source of inspiration for clients and colleagues alike.

MORNING RITUALS

Scully starts her day at 5:00 a.m., embracing the quiet of the early morning. She values this alone time, beginning with a few miles on her treadmill. This routine keeps her fit and clears her mind, preparing her for the busy day ahead. Scully’s mornings are also a time for spiritual reflection. She dedicates time to her devotional, grounding herself in her faith. And there at her side are her beloved dogs, constant companions during these quiet hours, bringing her the joy and comfort she craves.

Her husband, Pat (now retired), makes sure there’s a fresh pot of coffee waiting for Scully, a small but meaningful act of love she deeply appreciates—precious moments before she arrives at her studio by 8:30 a.m. to start her full, busy day.

THE HUSTLE BEGINS

Once at her beautifully curated office, Scully’s day can take a variety of paths. Clients often start texting her as early as 6:30 a.m., and she’s always ready to respond, showcasing her dedication and accessibility. Around 9:00 a.m., clients frequently arrive at the office for meetings, or Scully may head out to meet them at various locations around town—or anywhere. Whether choosing cabinetry, flooring, or hardware, she guides her clients through every decision, ensuring their visions come to life. One of her greatest strengths is her ability to make clients feel valued and understood.

THE ART OF MULTITASKING

Spending a day with Scully is like witnessing a masterclass in multitasking. Phone calls, texts, emails—she thrives on routine and discipline. Part of that structure is meal prepping, which allows her to maintain energy and focus. Healthy eating is a priority, but lunch doesn’t always fit into her busy schedule as client needs often take priority.

Posh Couture LA black strapless dress, $756

Her commitment to a healthy lifestyle extends beyond physical health; it’s also about maintaining the energy to give her best to her clients.

After a quick lunch, it’s back to the grind: computer work, answering emails, and fielding questions from her team. Teamwork is the backbone of Scully’s business, and she refers to her team members as her rock stars. Their loyalty and support are crucial to her success, and she never hesitates to express her gratitude. Most of her team has been with her for a long time, a testament to the positive work environment she fosters.

WRAPPING UP, WINDING DOWN

By 5:30 p.m., Scully tries to wrap up and head home, finally ready to unwind. Evenings are cherished times spent with Pat, who loves to cook—both enjoy sharing dinner together. Scully likes to be in bed by 9:00 p.m., although she rarely falls asleep immediately. While her mind quiets down, she relaxes and reflects on the day. It’s a routine that ensures she stays balanced and refreshed.

BALANCING WORK AND PASSION

Finding the balance between work and personal life is an ongoing challenge Scully takes seriously. Her passion for design means she’s often working, even when she’s not at the office. But it’s this passion that makes her outstanding at her art. Like many entrepreneurs, she loves that every day brings something new and different. And like many great artists, Scully says it’s a combination of discipline, humility, and community that has allowed her to thrive: “I firmly believe that the key to my success lies in the combination of a strong morning routine to ground me, an unwavering faith to strengthen me, and an incredible team of rockstars to inspire me.”

Style Update: Bathroom Edition

Witness the Transformation as a Bathroom Goes From Boring to Beautiful

When it comes to home style, the living room and kitchen often get all the attention. But if you want to experience the design and functionality of your home every day, it’s hard to overstate the importance of your bathroom. That’s precisely why the professionals at Ballroom Baths & Home Design focus on the room everyone loves—and needs.

We caught up with Ballroom owner Trenton Teat to talk through the before-and-afters of a recent project he completed with the help of Yadesign Interiors so you can see the difference for yourself.

AFTER BEFORE

The problems this bathroom had before are apparent. The paint was peeling, dark, and mismatched with the tile on the floor and in the bath. The lighting was dated and uneven, with pendants over the vanity and a fluorescent box fixture that flooded the space with harsh light. Add in that the cabinets were old and ugly, and Teat says the homeowners were frustrated and desperate for something different.

The differences brought by the final transitional-style design couldn’t be more stunning. This mix of Old World and New features shiplap walls, classic lighting, and Euro-style inset cabinetry that looks classic but very up-to-date. The floor showcases a beautiful concrete-look pattern that evokes a sense of a Mediterranean villa. Meanwhile, the bath utilizes a lovely, clean contrast between the white tile and the penny-round mosaic that completes the modern, timeless look.

Ballroom Baths & Home Design is a renowned kitchen and bathroom remodeling company serving the greater San Antonio and Hill Country. Since 1997, Trenton Teat has used superior craftsmanship and dedication to each client to make bathrooms and homes more beautiful.

Chic Cozy Cuisine

TARDIF’S CASUAL ELEGANCE INVITES YOU TO SETTLE IN AND STAY A WHILE

““The minute you enter, we want you to feel the coziness; to feel like you’ve been transported to a brasserie in Paris.”

The transition is striking as you enter Tardif's— an American Brasserie tucked neatly into the Dominion Center. Long velvet curtains shade the Hill Country sun, softening the interior light and inviting you into a calmer, cooler space.

A Parisian landscape fills the wall above the bustling open kitchen, and the large wooden bar is topped with beams covered in vines, a nod to Tardif's extensive wine list. French music plays lightly in the dimly lit dining room.

"The minute you enter, we want you to feel the coziness," French-Mexican chef and owner Jean Tardif says. "To feel like you've been transported to a brasserie in Paris." Servers are outfitted as they would be in France, in a vest, tie, and crisp white shirt. Tardif points out, “Your server will be with you for the whole experience,” just like in the City of Light.

The Elegance of Eating Slow

According to Tardif, the brasserie is not considered fine dining in France. It serves good food but is casual and comfortable, which is the experience Chef Tardif wants to give his patrons. “When you enter a nice ambiance, you’re feeling relaxed. We give you the best, but with a style and service that makes you feel at home. You’re not rushed, and you enjoy it more—a nice bottle of wine with that really good lobster or Chateaubriand. Everything is paced out to enjoy it slow.”

tardifs.com | 210-541-4130 | 23110 W I-10, San Antonio

Chef Tardif gets inspiration from his French father and grandparents. “I was in the kitchen from a very young age. My passion has always been cooking.” He honed his skills at Le Cordon Blue in Paris and restaurants in Mexico City before striking out to fill a gap in the San Antonio and Hill Country dining landscape.

Tardif embraces the hallmarks of traditional brasserie style: purple velvet, brown leather, marble and granite, wood and brass. The fare is equally traditional: soupe à l’oignon, seared foie gras, escargot, and Beef Wellington. The rich aromas, personalized service, and casually chic ambiance invite you into a fine dining experience that feels elegant and cozy, just like the City of Love.

The Beauty. The Tradition. The Lifestyle.

Experience the Timeless Sporting and Style of Upland Hunting at Joshua Creek Ranch

The patience and stillness. The quiet of the open field in the autumn light. A sudden flurry of color and sound as the hunted takes flight. The hunter reacts swiftly, steadily, and precisely. The hunter’s companions bound excitedly to gather the game and proudly bring it home. And then, as the party resumes its wait, the peace returns.

The beauty of upland hunting—a form of fowling in pursuit of quail, pheasant, and other land-dwelling gamebirds—comes alive in the upland lifestyle. Showcasing everything from beloved bird dogs to bespoke apparel, accessories, and fine shotguns, the accouterments may be passion-driven, but they create a lifestyle when combined with the thrill of the hunt. It’s an aesthetic and way of life that draws the most discerning sportsmen and sportswomen to some of the most beautiful landscapes around the world.

Lucky for locals, Joshua Creek Ranch (JCR) presents the opportunity to experience world-class upland hunting and all that entails right here in the renowned Texas Hill Country. For more than 35 years, JCR has cultivated an upland hunting habitat that offers top-shelf wing shooting opportunities for quail, pheasant, and chukar as well as high-volume driven shooting for pheasants and mallard ducks. “The mild hunting season climate, the beautiful and diverse habitat, the convenient location in South Central Texas, and our clients’ enthusiasm for gamebird hunting are all a part of what has made

JCR so special for so long,” said Ann Kercheville, Vice Chairman and President of JCR.

The upland lifestyle is not one-dimensional. In general, wing shooters are outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate relationships and a deep connection with nature. In other words, it’s not just about shooting birds, it’s about the journey and the profound experiences along the way. You might say it is a unique blend of art, skill, camaraderie, and the beauty of nature that seeps into your soul.

One of the biggest sources of enjoyment in upland hunting revolves around bird dogs, or “gundogs.”

At JCR, various breeds of pointers and setters are employed to find the birds and go “on-point” which is signaled by an instinctive and prolonged “freeze” with tail up triggered by the scent of gamebirds. Once hunters are in shooting position, professional guides give the command “birds up” to their flushing dogs to get the gamebirds in flight for an attempted shot. As birds are shot, the canine team’s role shifts to retrieving where they proudly gather and return the harvest to their guide, or hunt master.

“The sheer joy and amazement of pointing, flushing, and retrieving dogs working together in perfect synchronization is the highlight of their time afield.”
—Ann Kercheville

“For many upland hunters, the sheer joy and amazement of pointing, flushing, and retrieving dogs working together in perfect synchronization is the highlight of their time afield,” added Kercheville. JCR is partial to English Cocker Spaniels for the flushing and retrieving role in their upland hunts and boasts a kennel program with over 100 well-trained working gundogs.

Behind gundogs, the second-most alluring aspect of the upland lifestyle is customized “gear.” More specifically, shotguns are the “manner of take” for wing shooting, and they come in a variety of makes, models, and gauges. The quintessential shotgun for upland hunting is a double-barrel (over/under or side-by-side) shotgun in smaller gauges like 20, 28, or .410. Whether handed

down as generational family treasures or acquired as part of a collector’s hobby, there are few sporting artifacts that evoke as much emotion as beautifully handcrafted shotguns.

Though gundogs and shotguns are often the primary focus, there are myriad other facets to explore as part of the upland lifestyle. From the requisite safety “blaze orange” field gear and stylish artisan-made leather accessories to a whole culinary realm of gamebird recipes and paired wines and bourbons, the upland lifestyle encompasses field, fashion, and food on a luxury scale as few other sporting experiences can. And the heart of this lifestyle can be found just up the road at Joshua Creek Ranch.
