As we age the flaccidity(looseness) of tissues increases. This is especially important for the entire airway. Upper airways become more restricted due to hard structures and soft tissue hypertrophy (Enlargement). The result is less airflow or volume. This resistance can be detrimental to sleep quality and athletic performance.
NightLase ® utilizes a twin laser system patented by Fotona Lasers. This procedure is a nonablative(no surgical cutting) technique utilizing laser impulses to tighten connective tissue, muscles, and their attachments to hold open the soft palate area and the upper nasal passages. The net result is increased airflow and volume during normal function, sleeping, and athletic performance.
This twin laser system is FDA approved for safety and effectiveness on the tissues treated. The standard procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and needs to be repeated 21 days apart for 3-4 sessions. No anesthetic is needed, and there is no downtime. Protocol maintenance is usually a one-session touch-up every 1-2 years or as needed.

Boerne Lifestyle is proud to serve the residents and businesses of the Greater Boerne Area. We are thankful to call this community home, but we also recognize that we are part of something much greater—the United States of America.

Over the years, we have traveled throughout the world, from Canada to Brazil, Moldova to Thailand, and many places in between. This fall, Tara and our son Luke will travel to Peru to deliver Bibles to remote mountain villages. We have encountered wonderful people and beautiful countries everywhere we’ve gone, yet none compare to the freedoms, opportunities, and spirit of the USA.
Our nation was built through courage, sacrifice, and the determination of people willing to serve something greater than themselves. The freedoms we enjoy today were forged through generations who fought to defend liberty and protect future generations. Right here in our own community are Marines, sailors, soldiers, pilots, and veterans who have carried that responsibility for over 250 years.
Some of the most meaningful contributions happen quietly. People like Bobby Gosschalk, shaped by his family’s history and legacy, recognized a need and stepped in to serve some of our neighbors who need help the most (“Restoring Broken Bikes, Rebuilding Bright Futures,” p. 68). That same spirit of sacrificial love is reflected in Shannon Massie and Rachel Higginbotham, whose decision to say “yes” to organ donation brought hope and life to others (“Ripples of Life,” p. 30).
As America celebrates this historic anniversary, we pray for those who have lost loved ones in service to our country, for those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, and for all Americans to demonstrate gratitude for the freedoms we share.
And most of all, we hope you take time to celebrate this extraordinary nation.
Happy 250th Anniversary, America!

How a living donor transplant connected three families through friendship, recovery, and redefined family along the way.
ARTICLE BY CAROLINE MITCHELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISON
Until the summer two years ago, Billy and Shannon Massie were living healthy, normal lives. Two years later, though, one is a liver transplant recipient, the other is a living donor, and countless others have been impacted by their story. Today, three families are thriving and are connected in a way none of them could have predicted. In June of 2024, Billy was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, a condition that caused damage to his liver. Told by physicians that he needed to be put on the transplant list, their family was biding their time while grappling with the notion of organ donation. “In order to receive this gift of life, somebody’s life will end,”
Shannon explains soberly. “That is a really hard thing to wrestle with.” After doing some research, they learned about the Transplant Institute at University Hospital in San Antonio, which works with living donors.
Around the same time, Billy scheduled an appointment with a local audiologist after experiencing unrelated hearing problems. Seeking a second opinion, he found Rachel Higginbotham’s practice and later realized that he and Shannon had met her years earlier at Currey Creek Church. Quickly, Rachel noticed that Billy looked unwell. “His skin was very yellow,” she recalls. “After several questions, I got to the heart of it: there was something wrong with his liver, but they weren’t sure what yet. I said, ‘That’s so funny because just last week I applied to be a donor.’ And in a very silly Billy fashion, he said, ‘Well, if it doesn’t work out with the other person...’”
As it turned out, Rachel’s original recipient relocated to Arizona to pursue treatment through the Mayo Clinic, suddenly leaving her available for another match. “I felt like God was putting this opportunity on my heart,” she recalls. “I’ve got a liver, and I’m willing to do this.” So, on Christmas Day 2024, Billy and Shannon received the call: “You’re next.”
Rachel and Billy completed the final stages of testing as surgeons determined they were an excellent match based on blood type, liver volume, and body size. Rachel approached the experience with a level of enthusiasm that Shannon still laughs about today. Before surgery, Rachel asked nurses if they could take a photograph of her liver during the procedure. She even watched liver transplant surgeries online beforehand.
Rachel chose April for the surgery so she could prepare her business and family for the recovery time away from work. When the surgery was complete, doctors had removed roughly 60 percent of Rachel’s liver and transplanted it into Billy. Rachel was discharged after about four and a half days, while Billy remained hospitalized for 18 days as doctors monitored for rejection. Rachel’s recovery progressed faster, though it was still physically exhausting at times, and she returned to work parttime within a few weeks while balancing life with the support of her husband and three young boys. Much of the liver’s functional recovery happens within the first several weeks, though regeneration continues for months after.

“I felt like God was putting this opportunity on my heart. I’ve got a liver, and I’m willing to do this.”
—Rachel Higginbotham

“Sitting in the waiting rooms, you know that every single one in there is fighting for their life… I’m going to give in any way I possibly can.”
—Shannon Massie
The friendship between the families deepened during recovery. Shannon supported Rachel through the transplant process, and that care would be returned as Rachel came alongside Shannon when she decided to become a living donor herself. Through shared packing lists, favorite snacks, and evening stays, the two formed an unbreakable friendship.
“My instant thought was, ‘Yes! He can have mine!’” Shannon remembers during Billy’s original diagnosis. But because they weren’t compatible matches, Shannon hoped to help another recipient. So after Billy recovered, Shannon continued through the donor evaluation process herself. “We had been blessed so abundantly by Rachel’s gift,” she explained. “As soon as I was able and as soon as Billy was healthy enough, I was ready to donate as well.”
In late 2025, University Hospital found Shannon a match. She underwent surgery in December, where Rachel showed up “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed” before dawn with coffee for Billy.
“They told me that it would be up to the recipient, whether or not they wanted to meet me,” Shannon says. “And of course, that’s fine. They’ve gotten the best part of me, and that’s all that matters.”
That meeting did happen. The recipient had written letters she wanted to share with Shannon in person, so hospital staff organized the reveal in a garden at University Hospital, where the
families—the Massies, Higginbothams, and their new friends—had the opportunity to meet one another for the first time. “Walking through this on both sides is eye-opening,” Shannon says. “Sitting in the waiting rooms, you know that every single person in there is fighting for their life. They’re waiting for their turn. That broke my heart and gave me inspiration. I’m going to give in any way I possibly can.”
Now, more than a year after Billy’s transplant, life has largely returned to normal. The donors were surprised by how quickly daily life resumed after such a major surgery. Physicians kept Shannon in the hospital for about four days, making sure everything was functioning properly.
“The toughest thing is feeling so tired. Your body has been through a lot, and it’s just zapping,” she says. “But most respond quickly, and those who are working behind a desk are back in action in two or three weeks.”
The bonds formed through living liver donation have continued long after the recovery process. Rachel and her husband recently traveled to Scotland for her 40th birthday. Shannon texts regularly with her recipient and is planning a summer barbecue with the recipient’s family in Del Rio. When people see Billy and Rachel together, they often joke that the two seem like siblings.
“We laugh about it,” Shannon says. “They’re tied by a liver now.”

Living organ donation allows healthy individuals to donate a kidney or a portion of their liver to someone in need of a transplant. People can live full lives with only one kidney, and—unlike most organs—the liver is able to regenerate, allowing both donor and recipient livers to regain full function after surgery. Living donation can significantly reduce transplant wait times and give patients an alternative to waiting for a deceased donor match. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, nearly 10,000 Texans are currently waiting for life-saving transplants.
The University Health Transplant Institute in San Antonio offers living kidney and liver donor programs, including paired donation programs for incompatible matches. The institute guides donors through medical evaluations, surgery, and recovery while emphasizing donor safety and longterm health. The program’s nationally recognized “Champion for Life” initiative trains family members and advocates to help patients share their stories and connect with potential donors. The program has received national recognition from Donate Life America for expanding awareness surrounding living organ donation.

In this part of Texas, ranch roads stretch across the Hill Country, and hard work is simply part of everyday life. It’s around here that Kendall County Fabrication stands on a foundation stronger than steel. For owners Kevin and Sarah Justice, the business is built on faith, family, and the belief that true success means serving others.
ARTICLE BY BRIAN MCVEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULA VM
Their shared journey began long before the company opened. When the pair learned they were expecting their first child, their vision for the future came into sharp focus. Like many young couples preparing for parenthood, they

spent nights discussing the life they hoped to create. They wanted to raise their children with strong values, a sense of purpose, and deep ties to community.
From the beginning, Sarah and Kevin knew they wanted an alternative to the traditional 9-to-5 lifestyle. They desired a life built together, rooted in freedom and intention. Ranch work came naturally to them, and the long days of physical labor proved formative. They believe that working with your hands and seeing the direct result of honest labor brings humility. Ranch life taught them discipline, responsibility, grit, and respect. Those very lessons became the bedrock of Kendall County Fabrication.
The project started as a dream but evolved into a purpose-driven business centered on craftsmanship and integrity. Today, the Justices deliver high-quality, custom metal fabrication services tailored to exact specifications, from complex assemblies to structural frameworks. Their state-of-the-art equipment and skilled craftsmanship ensure durability, precision, and efficiency, providing fast turnaround times and consistent quality for Hill Country businesses.
Now raising two children, Kevin and Sarah approach life and business with intentionality. Every decision is guided by the legacy they hope to leave behind for their family and the local community.
At the core of Kendall County Fabrication is a simple, powerful ethos: “Our work is guided by our Christian values, which shape the way we treat our customers, our team, and our community. We believe in honesty, hard work, and doing what is right. Every project is an opportunity to serve others and honor God through the quality of our work.” To the Justices, these are principles they strive to live by every day.

Years ago, Kevin became involved in prison ministry through Forgiven Ministry, an organization focused on helping incarcerated men rediscover hope and rebuild their lives. Walking inside prison walls changes a person. Kevin witnessed transformation in environments where many would least expect it. He saw individuals rebuild their faith and believe in themselves again through purposeful work, mentorship, and encouragement. This ministry reminded the Justices that life is about helping those who are struggling or forgotten. That perspective directly influences how Kendall County Fabrication operates today.
In a world where businesses often focus solely on profit, Sarah and Kevin remain grounded in a different mission. They believe true success is measured by how you treat people and whether your work leaves lives better than you found them. The greatest legacy they leave will not be the projects they complete, but the lives they help shape along the way.

Hanalei Pools combines uncompromising integrity with elite design to create breathtaking, resort-style waterscapes at home on the Hill Country horizon.
There is a distinct moment when a backyard ceases to be merely an outdoor space and becomes an escape. It is found in the soothing murmur of moving water, the pristine clarity of a turquoise basin, and the seamless integration of architecture and nature. For Hanalei Pools, creating this experience is an art form.

Named after the serene and breathtaking Hanalei Bay on Kauai’s north shore, the company was founded eight years ago by Brad Morris, owner of the esteemed G. Morris Custom Homes. The venture was born out of necessity. Witnessing clients navigate an oversaturated pool market fraught with unreliability, Morris—a Marine Corps veteran who applies military precision to his businesses—decided to bring an elite, boutique building experience to the industry.
Hanalei Pools specializes exclusively in resort-style transformations, catering to both custom new construction and existing estates across Central Texas, from Fredericksburg to San Antonio. What truly distinguishes a Hanalei pool lies beneath the beautiful surface. Where many builders cut corners, Morris insists on uncompromising structural engineering. The company utilizes 12-inch gunite walls instead of the industry-standard eight, a sixinch gravel base foundation, and mandatory double-cage steel reinforcement for any above-ground structures. Every mechanical choice, from dedicated pumps for each body of water to advanced heater-chiller combinations, ensures maximum longevity and peak performance.
The visual impact of a Hanalei project often begins at the edge. Dramatic perimeter-overflow designs and vanishing edges create a seamless transition into the sweeping Central Texas horizon, while iridescent glass tilework catches the sunlight, giving elevated spas and catch basins a brilliant, jewel-like quality. Meanwhile, fire and water come together to create a striking evening ambiance. Linear fire tables, glowing fire bowls, and integrated bubblers pair with vibrant LED lighting to transform the waterscapes into captivating nighttime sanctuaries, perfect for entertaining.
The journey to paradise is seamless from start to finish. Utilizing cutting-edge 3D renderings and flyover technology, Hanalei Pools allows homeowners to experience their vision in hyper-realistic day and night settings before a single stone is laid. Guided by a transparent eight-step construction process, clients enjoy total clarity from concept to completion.
These breathtaking oases represent more than just swimming pools. They are meticulously engineered private resorts, built to endure and designed to enchant.
Hanalei Pools delivers a turnkey, boutique experience to discerning homeowners and custom builders across Central Texas. Rooted in values of communication, innovation, and unwavering integrity, Brad and Andrea Morris transform ordinary landscapes into world-class private retreats. Their elite team handles every detail from A to Z with transparency and meticulous craftsmanship, whether you are dreaming of a sleek architectural masterpiece or a tropical oasis.

LAND CONSERVATION DIRECTOR KEL HOFFMAN REFLECTS ON THE DEEP HISTORY, COMPLEX BEAUTY, AND COMMUNITY-LED CARE OF CIBOLO CREEK.
ARTICLE BY KEL HOFFMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONNOR ENGEL

The waters of Cibolo Creek are tricky. The stream’s well-defined banks give the impression that the Cibolo moves along a clear course, twisting but steady. It’s obvious when one looks at the stream, isn’t it? After its gentle arc around Boerne, it heads southeast to San Antonio and the aquifer, then outward, too far to trace. There seems to be little reason to consider a river’s course at all.
“Since deep time, people of many tribes have drunk from the Cibolo, sustaining the ties between them and this, their chosen patch of earth.”

The stream’s unhurried, languid flow could lull the rushed river-watcher into believing its continuity is simple, but I like to think the story is much more complex. Watch a beat longer, and the stream’s current reveals itself as dynamic and woven, shaped both by human decision and water’s insistence. On second glance, the seemingly tidy stream channel twists and braids, occasionally leaving water in a forgotten oxbow. Given time, those isolated pools will rejoin the Cibolo.
To the patient river-watcher, the meanders of Cibolo Creek may resemble the lives of this region’s folks. The flow visible to the naked eye is not the entire creek, but only its most prosaic expression. The waters move through the hungry roots of the cypresses and the yawning cavities of the Edwards alike. When viewed from its banks, the river-watcher may realize what looks simple here only works because of the ties that hold it together.
Since deep time, people of many tribes have drunk from the Cibolo, sustaining the ties between them and this, their chosen patch of earth. Separated only by the stream's meanders through time, Comanche people drank these waters much like their Tonkawa forebears had, and later Germans would. The creek slaked the thirst of countless families, creating new lives in an arid, mercurial place. Five generations on, Boerne's relationship with the Cibolo deepened when

“Beyond the city limits of Boerne and the confines of the Hill Country, the stream meets other rivers, flowing toward the Gulf and another cycle across the land.”
folks living along the stream came upon an unexpected bend.
Near the end of the last century, the Cibolo had become a ghost of its former self. Too much use and too little love left the creek worn down. The lives those waters touched, plant, animal, and human, felt that shift. The citizens of Boerne reached out to the Cibolo in a new way, this time asking what they could do for the stream that had nurtured them.
The debris that had stifled the stream's flow was removed and replaced with attentive ears and willing hands. The purposeful river-watcher can now observe a stream that nurses red-eared sliders and mud-streaked kids in the same eddies. That same stream continues to give water to those who still thirst. Then, as now, those along the Cibolo heard the stream and responded.
In April of this year, Wrede Marsh on The Cibolo Center for Conservation's main
campus stood bone-dry, the cracked mud tiles of its main pool surrendering edges upward to the sun. Within a few days, the rains fell and the marsh filled. A week before, nothing but a foot of dusty hot air cushioned those squares. Now, a dinnerplate-sized red-eared slider glided past in a space empty a week prior, nibbling a fresh underwater buffet. The turtle spooked a diamondback watersnake, and in an explosion of silt and water, both slipped away. In time, that turtle has the chance to make it all the way to the Cibolo and beyond, if it's so inclined. The snake, too.
As the turtle glides, the Cibolo goes. Beyond the city limits of Boerne and the confines of the Hill Country, the stream meets other rivers, flowing toward the Gulf and another cycle across the land. Marsh levels downstream continue to rise and fall with the seasons. Turtles glide on water, moving from here, and the Cibolo flows.

WELCOME TO FAMILY POWERSPORTS’ WILDLY ENTERTAINING WORLD OF FAMILY-FRIENDLY, HIGH-ENERGY ADVENTURES.
The Hill Country sun beams down, and dust kicks up behind Josh Marlatt’s all-terrain vehicle (ATV) as he navigates a rugged trail with his family close behind. For Marlatt, riding may deliver some of the purest exhilaration, but the true thrill comes from sharing the trail with the people he loves most. Over 11 years ago, Marlatt bought his first motorcycle from Alamo Cycle Plex, known today as Family PowerSports. Fast forward to the present, and he is now the general manager of the very same dealership. Growing up in Spring Branch, Marlatt watched his friends tear through trails on ATVs and quickly caught the off-road bug. Seeing the tight bonds formed on those dirty trails propelled him to turn his passion for motorsports into a motorized means of building community.

“Being on an ATV is a whole different level of an experience as a kid growing up,” Marlatt recalls. “And then once you start young, it's not something that kids will shy away from. A lot of adults who own dirt bikes, ATVs, and motorcycles—they may have gone through some time where they weren't riding, but then it always comes back around when they're on two or four wheels again. It’s like a circle of life.”
For every customer who walks through the door, Marlatt’s mission is to deliver outrageous customer service and spread that infectious joy of riding. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Family PowerSports saw a massive influx of people eager to escape the indoors and embrace outdoor adventure. His love for motorsports permeates everything he does, allowing him to connect with outdoor enthusiasts at the largest dealership in South

Texas. “It's a one-stop shop because we have everything someone could need,” Marlatt says. Today, Family PowerSports boasts six booming locations across Texas, including Austin, Lubbock, Midland, Odessa, San Angelo, and San Antonio.
To keep the fun going, the company hosts thrilling group rides and even features an in-store test track for customers to try out vehicles before buying. The group rides happen every three
months at local off-road parks, bringing employees and customers together to ride, swap stories, and share a great meal. “More people realize how much fun they can have outside and not be stuck inside,” Marlatt says. “And then they get out either by themselves or—a lot of times—on group rides. So just to have that off-roading experience is great. It's a lifestyle that we're creating with the customer and that the customer is creating with us.”

At Family PowerSports, adventure is much more than a weekend hobby—it is an exhilarating way of life. As South Texas’ largest dealership group, they are completely dedicated to fuel-injected fun and outdoor exploration. Whether your family wants to dominate rugged off-road trails on an ATV, needs a lift while hunting or working the ranch, or wants to cruise through the majestic Hill Country canyons on a motorcycle, this shop has you covered. Every team member shares your deep passion for the outdoors and strives to deliver outrageous customer service daily. With six premier Texas locations, finding toptier vehicles, expert parts, and service you can count on is entirely effortless. Visit their nearby showroom today to transform your weekend dreams into a reality. familypowersports.com | 210-696-2000 11900 IH-10 W, San Antonio
“THEY GET ALL GIGGLY AND EXCITED, THEY’RE SCREAMING AND YELLING, AND EVERYBODY IS JUST HAVING A GREAT TIME.”
Marlatt sees firsthand how riding enthusiasm catches fire, with happy customers regularly inviting neighbors and extended family into the hobby. Family PowerSports feeds that excitement with a massive inventory across West and South Texas. They offer utility and sport side-by-sides, boats, motorcycles, go-karts, utility trailers, mowers, and more. Rather than sticking strictly to traditional bikes, the business continues to expand its off-road lineup to maximize the outdoor possibilities.
“People want to create hobbies,” Marlatt says. “The thing with these outdoor machines is that you can do multiple things with them. It’s not just hunting or ranch work; you can drive around the neighborhood, go out to the park and play, go camping with them, take it down to the beach, and more. There are so many different variables that come into play when purchasing.”
Through these adventurous group rides and community events, the staff connects with riders on a deeply personal level. Marlatt’s goal is to meet customers where they are, from the showroom floor to the muddy trail. That euphoric feeling of the wind ripping past on an ATV is simply too good not to share. “A lot of the customers—especially when they're buying—usually want to know where to ride,” Marlatt says. “And then we can give them a few ideas on where to go. A lot of times, they want to invite us out there, and we'll go out and hang out with them, grill out, and barbecue. They go from just being a customer to a family friend.”
Once those childhood friends introduced him to the off-road world, he never looked back. But ultimately, what Marlatt treasures most is hitting the gas with his own family. “The best part is taking my wife and the kids out and just seeing how much joy and excitement it brings to them,” Marlatt says. He, his wife Heather, and their two kids absolutely love exploring the wide-open spaces of the Hill Country. “They get all giggly and excited, they're screaming and yelling, and everybody is just having a great time.”

Join people across the Hill Country as we mark the 250th anniversary of America’s Independence.

We may usually be known for our Texas pride, but the people of the Hill Country are equally recognized for our patriotism. Our communities are pulling out all the stops to commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial birthday. ALONG WITH INDEPENDENCE DAY FESTIVITIES, THE HILL COUNTRY WILL PAUSE TO REMEMBER.

As we pause this year to remember the lives lost, we also honor the enduring spirit of a community that continues to heal, rebuild, and stand together.

From his historical roots to local volunteerism, one Boerne neighbor mends discarded wheels to help families power forward with dignity.

Some arrive dusty and tired, with flat tires, loose chains, worn pedals, or brakes that need gentle attention. Some are children’s bikes that have been outgrown and left in the corners of garages. Others are adult bikes that still have miles in them but need someone patient enough to bring them back to life. Bobby Gosschalk studies each one, deciding what it needs and whether it can be made useful again. Most of the time, it can.
For Bobby, repairing bikes at Kendall County Women’s Shelter and Fabulous Finds is about more than grease and spare parts. It is about restoring hope and opportunity for others. “A bike is durable,” Bobby says. “It sets children free and gives families a way to move forward with dignity and independence.”
That belief connects Bobby’s past to his present work. He was born in Terrell, Texas, in 1951, the only member of his immediate family born in the United States. His family immigrated from the Netherlands after World War II, carrying memories of occupation, resilience, and new beginnings. His mother worked with the Dutch underground, creating false identifications for Allied forces, and was honored by Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Bernard Montgomery. His father, who spent part of the war in hiding, later became an interpreter and spoke five languages.
When the family came to America, Bobby says, they arrived with what little they were allowed to bring. “They came with $75,” Bobby recalls. Their belongings were packed into a wooden box. His father even tarred the inside, just in case the family had to live in it. Eventually, the family settled in East Texas, where Bobby’s father worked in recycling and salvage. This environment directly shaped Bobby’s dedication to repairing bicycles. His first bicycle came

“People don’t always remember the bike itself. They remember someone cared enough to help them move forward when they needed it most.”
from a scrapyard. He later inherited his brother’s Schwinn Typhoon, a heavy steel bike from the 1940s that became a cherished family heirloom passed down to his own children.
Bicycles, Bobby says, were always part of the family’s story.
“When you’re Dutch, and there are more bicycles in Holland than people, you ride a bicycle,” he jokes. As a boy in Longview, Bobby learned to maintain his bike out of necessity, teaching himself mechanics with whatever tools were available. Those skills followed him to Texas A&M University, where fellow students brought him their bikes for repairs. “It’s not rocket science,” he says. “But you get pretty good at it.”
Bobby and his wife, Gigi, expected to retire near Longview on Lake Cherokee. But with their children and grandchildren in the Boerne area, they began to feel the distance. Their children were balancing demanding work schedules, and the grandchildren were growing up quickly. “It was time to come,” Bobby says, and they moved to the Hill Country in 2019.
Once in Boerne, Bobby began looking for a way to give back.
He found it at Kendall County Women’s Shelter and Fabulous Finds, the shelter’s resale store on Main Street. The store often received donated bicycles, but few were ready to sell or use. So Bobby did what he was used to doing: he took them home, repaired them, and brought them back.
Bobby estimates he has fixed more than 400 bikes for the shelter and Fabulous Finds from 2019 through the end of 2025. Including his service in college and the decades after, he estimates the total approaches 1,000.
Some bikes are repaired and sold at Fabulous Finds to support the shelter, while others remain at the shelter for women and children to use. Sometimes, they even keep them when they leave. He may not know the specifics of each person’s story, but he has learned enough to understand that gifts like these directly improve lives, especially for those facing hardship. “People don’t always remember the bike itself,” Bobby notes. “They remember someone cared enough to help them move forward when they needed it most.”

“A bike is durable. It sets children free, and gives families a way to move forward with dignity and independence.”

The restoration process begins with Bobby evaluating each bike. Some require only air, while others demand new parts and several hours of labor. “I donate all of that,” he says. But he also keeps an eye on value, ensuring he does not put more into a bike than the store can reasonably recover. His goal is simply to help the shelter raise funds and serve people. “I want the shelter to survive and continue to do the valuable work that they do for those who cannot help themselves.”
His work has also grown through a small side effort called Bob’s Bike Barn. Mostly operating through word of mouth, he helps neighborhood families tune up children's bikes and get them safely back on the street. He likes to joke that his work comes with a lifetime warranty. “Not your lifetime. Mine,” he says, laughing. As long as he is around, he will take care of the bikes he repairs.
The effort is expanding through Bobby’s relationship with Crossroads Bikes in San Antonio. The shop’s owner, Sean Stehling, has donated quality used bikes and parts to support Bobby’s work for years. Now that Boerne lacks a dedicated bike shop, Crossroads has plans to open a mobile shop at Fabulous Finds two days each week. That way, Bobby can focus on used bikes while technicians handle newer, more complex repairs. This partnership fits Boerne’s broader spirit of generosity. With so many residents willing to help, the community responds when needs become visible. “It’s amazing what people do for others here.”
That sense of generosity matters deeply to Bobby. He and Gigi attend The Bridge, a local church community that strengthens their sense of connection and purpose. Through the church and shelter work, Bobby has seen small acts of service grow into lasting relationships. Generosity, he says, has to come from the heart. “If it’s a pat on the back that you want, if you want recognition for it, you’re doing it for the wrong reason,” Bobby says. “I’m just an instrument to help people.”
He hopes his neighbors will see they have something to offer, too, whether helping at a shelter or simply asking where assistance is needed. “All I did was see a need and work toward it,” Bobby says. “It doesn’t take a bunch of money.” At the shelter, volunteers are always welcome, and Bobby’s advice is simple: walk in and ask what needs to be done.
The reward for Bobby is not attention, but knowing each repaired bike restores independence and joy. “You have to be a giver to make it count for people who have nothing,” Bobby reminds us. “You don’t want something in return. You don’t want to feel better than this person. You just want to give and help them help themselves.”
And sometimes, making a difference starts with restoring a single bicycle.

HOW ASSISTING HANDS HOME CARE HELPED A LOCAL VETERAN REBUILD HIS MOBILITY AND STAND TALL ONCE AGAIN.

At Boerne Lifestyle, we love sharing stories of local resilience, especially from those who have served our country. For senior citizens in our community, maintaining independence while managing changing health needs can feel like an uphill battle. When 87-year-old veteran Ramiro Rodriguez found his mobility and autonomy threatened by sudden medical challenges, his dedicated family knew they needed premier, compassionate support to keep him safe at home. They turned to Nancy and Troy Wilch with Assisting Hands Home Care.
“I have confidence in myself; I believe in myself. I just want to get my feet out there, walking around, and do this on my own.”
Navigating the transition to home care can be daunting for any family, but the right team can provide physical assistance and restore peace of mind. For Rodriguez, the dedicated caregivers became trusted partners in his rehabilitation journey, working hand in hand with his medical team to rebuild his stamina. One year after making that crucial call, Ramiro is sharing his inspiring journey of recovery, newfound confidence, and an unwavering determination to walk completely on his own terms. assistinghands.com/135/texas/nesanantonio 210-405-4059
(Responses edited for length and clarity.)
What was your life like before you started working with Assisting Hands?
About a year ago, I started losing my strength in my legs, and I was falling quite frequently. My daughter and my son-in-law noticed I was having these falls and wondered what the heck was going on. They put me in the hospital because my blood pressure was going up and down.
At that time, my speech was getting bad, too. I was really mumbling. So I had that, and my blood pressure was off, and I couldn’t walk. I knew I needed help, but we didn’t know what was going on.
How did you find Assisting Hands?
My daughter and son-in-law called Assisting Hands, and Nancy came to the house for an interview. I liked that they took the time to get to know us and get to know me, so I thought, “Okay, I'll give it a try.”
What do you think of the care you receive?
Since I've been working with them for almost a year, I have enjoyed them. I mean, they're great. They know what they're doing. They know their job, period. Nancy and her team are very helpful. They help make sure I’m taking my medication. They help me get dressed sometimes, but not lately. I've been dressing myself now.

When they arrive, and I'm drinking my coffee, they ask me how I feel, how I slept, and if I have any pains or anything. I feel like they really care. They are understanding, and they take their time. I get along with them great. They're here for this purpose, and they give me a lot of confidence. I'm grateful for that.
It's been a little over a year, and they're making sure that I'm using my walker or my wheelchair. When we started, I had to use a wheelchair. Then I finally started walking with a walker. My rehabilitation therapist often asks me what my goal is, and I tell them I intend to get rid of this dadgum walker and wheelchair. I haven’t fallen in quite a while, and my therapist says my legs are getting stronger. My doctor has noticed that too. I want to be walking on my own, and I feel like I’m close to it now.
Recently, my Assisting Hands caregiver suggested we go outside for a walk down one of the streets in my neighborhood. This was about three or four weeks ago. We had to make frequent stops where we’d rest for about five minutes and then start walking again.
Well, yesterday was a major accomplishment for me. We used to have to stop three or four times before we made it to the end of the block. But this time, we only stopped twice on the whole trip— once going up there, and once coming back. I was proud of myself.
That’s how I feel with Assisting Hands. Why should I worry about things that I know I can accomplish? I know I’m going to walk… that’s my goal. I have confidence in myself; I believe in myself. I just want to get my feet out there, walking around, and do this on my own.

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.
He calls days later.
That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.
The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.
The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.
Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.
3
No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.
4
Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.
5
The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

YOU WORK HARD ALL YEAR—YOUR VACATION STYLE SHOULD FEEL CINEMATIC, EFFORTLESS, AND UNMISTAKABLY MAIN CHARACTER.
ARTICLE BY COURTNEY STONE SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Effortless vacation style isn’t about having the perfect outfit for every moment—it’s about having the right foundation to make every moment look intentional. When you know how to build a capsule travel wardrobe, you’ll avoid agonizing over what to wear and spend more time actually enjoying your getaway, all while looking like you have a personal stylist tucked in your carry-on.
Here’s your go-to list for this season’s travels:
1. THE EFFORTLESS STATEMENT SET
A coordinated two-piece (linen, silk, or cotton) that transitions from day to night. Sets are easy to wear, photograph, and offers effortless ways to look put together. Bonus: you can mix and match the pieces with other items that you pack. I would recommend packing multiple sets to make it even easier to mix and match. For both men and women, simply focus on neutrals and, if you want to add color, make sure it coordinates well with other items in your luggage.
2. THE MOOD-ALTERING PIECE
A sweeping dress in a bold print or luscious fabric that makes you feel sensual, grounded, and free. Find something that moves with you and captures light beautifully. This is your dreamy piece— flowy fabrics with movement that captures the eye and works for any kind of event.
3. THE LUXE FLAT OR SCULPTURAL SANDAL
Find footwear that balances style and comfort. Look for interesting shapes or materials (like leather with architectural cutouts or metallic finishes). More than shoes—they’re anchors for adventure, grounding your aesthetic wherever you land. This goes the same for men. Your footwear can also make an impact through the braided details of your sandals or the canvas of a casual slip-on loafer.
4. THE TRANSITIONAL THIRD PIECE
Think: kimono, over-sized linen blazer, a lightweight duster, or a gauzy button-down left open. This is your layering hero that adds polish without effort. It’s an aura amplifier that instantly makes your outfit feel styled and intentional.
5. INTERESTING AND IMPACTFUL SUNGLASSES
Sunglasses with personality is a must. They could be over-sized, cat-eye, or tinted lenses that feel more like “cinematic escape” than “just functional.” Because you’re not sightseeing—you’re starring in your own travel film.
6. A SCULPTURAL CARRYALL
A bag that holds your essentials but looks like art— think woven textures, unique shapes, or buttery leather. Practicality meets poetry. You deserve a vessel that carries your dreams...and your SPF.
7. SIGNATURE SCENT OR TRAVEL CANDLE
Pack travel-sized fragrance or a tiny candle that evokes your essence or complements the location. Scent is meant to ignite memories and set the tone— infuse your travels with an olfactory signature.
8. ACCESSORIES WITH A STORY
A few intentional pieces such as a ring from a market you found during your travels, a layered necklace that serves as an easy throw-on, or a straw hat to protect your face from the sun (even if it’s a cooler climate, because remember, safety first: don’t get burnt).
