Giving Thanks

In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those that you love and encouraging giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our pos sessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be.

I am thankful for my children, husband, family and friends. The commu nity we live in and the ability to live out our faith without fear of persecution.  I am thankful for my health and well-being.  My twins have never experienced a Thanksgiving without the Turkey Trot starting off our day. This, too, I am thankful for as we are able to truly pause before the business of the day - to remember why we gather. Thanksgiving is a verb - it is active and alive.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organiza tions and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are espe cially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. As we prepare to gather with our loved ones this holiday season, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings.

Blessings to you and your family, TARA BOVÉ, PUBLISHER @BOERNELIFESTYLE

SHINING LIGHT INTO DARKNESS

INSPIRED BY | LIFE + CULTURE16
Hallie, Jenny and Tristan Forks

BOERNE BUSINESS OWNER

ILLUMINATES A PATH FOR HEALING

Jenny Forks isn’t afraid to tell her story. But that hasn’t always been the case. Hearing the Boerne designer and business owner recount the traumatic details of her late teenage years, you can understand why. The judgment and shame of teenage pregnancy, are compounded by enduring two violent assaults and the rejec tion of much of her community. Aren’t these the kind of things we try to keep hidden and hope to just forget? Jenny has learned that there is a better path that leads to healing and - in her case - to find a passion and a purpose. And that path started with finally bringing her story out into the light.

CALLED TO SPEAK UP

Jenny was a successful designer and business owner when the pandemic hit in 2020. While she focused on keeping her business open, she began asking God what else she could do. “He said pretty clearly, ‘Tell your story.’”

That story started 24 years ago with an unplanned pregnancy during Jenny’s senior year of high school in the Corpus Christi area, and a series of violent and traumatic events that followed. These events are detailed in her upcoming book: “Feet First, Braving it with Faith Alone,” which will be released through Amazon in early November.

Jenny never intended to write a book. She first needed to tell her story to her now adult daughter. “I knew that I needed to tell

my daughter the true full story. We cried together and worked on that for a couple of weeks,” Jenny said. “But I kept hearing from God, saying, ‘You’re not done. Tell your story and tell it loudly.’”

Doors kept opening to share: a friend’s podcast led to speaking opportunities and, ultimately, the decision to write a book. Along the way, she learned the value of bringing difficult experiences out of the darkness and into the light. “The more you tell your story it gets easier,” she adds. “And it is very healing.”

“Sharing also helps other people going through similar experiences to know that they are not alone,” Jenny notes. “And it shows them a way that they can find healing as well.” Jenny hopes to inspire others to bring their traumatic stories into the light. “Being able to speak up and become comfortable sharing your story provides so much healing, and not only for yourself. It is also such a powerful way to help and inspire others to get through what they are going through.”

SHINING LIGHT INTO DARKNESS

Jenny’s faith in God is at the core of her story. “People have failed me,” she says. “But God has never left my side and never failed me.” This is a message she shares through her business, J.Forks Designs, on Main Street in Boerne. A section of the store, called The Lighthouse, is designed to provide people

with the hope and inspiration that Jenny has found through her faith in Jesus Christ. “A lighthouse is a beacon that brings you home when you’re lost out at sea. God is our home.”

Jenny uses her store as a platform for sharing the message of hope and healing. In addition to The Lighthouse, she has started a Bible Study that meets in the back of her store every Wednesday night. “It’s open to anyone,” Jenny explains. “People from all sorts of churches, employees, people who come into my store. I teach from God’s word, and all are welcome.”

Jenny finds that her past experiences allow her to help others in crisis. She was recently appointed to the Board of the Kendall County Women’s Shelter, and she volunteers regularly at the Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center.

“God has given me the gift to be able to tell my story,” Jenny says. “To tell it loudly to help others. I want to inspire people to stand up, be brave and tell their stories. You never know who you’ll inspire to do the same. When you link arms and have people right beside you, you’re so much stronger. The more of us who can tell our stories, link arms, and put the armor of God on together, the stronger we’ll all be.”

Staycation

COMFORT OFFERS JUST WHAT YOU NEED

We all need a break sometimes, just to get away from the desk and living room for a short staycation. A place where we can enjoy surroundings just a little different from our world and taste wonderful foods at unique cafes and restaurants. And what better place than just a few miles up the road in Kendall County – Comfort. Even the name suggests a nice homey feeling away from home.

“The township of Comfort was established in 1854 by German immigrants who were Freethinkers and abolitionists. Ernst Hermann Altgelt is credited with surveying the lots that would be sold to German immigrants. Fritz and Betty Holekamp built the first house in Comfort before Comfort's official founding on September 3, 1854.

“The downtown area is possibly one of the most well-preserved historic business districts in Texas. There are well over 100 struc tures in the area dating back to the 19th century, and seven of them were designed by the noted architect Alfred Giles.”

Originally the Ingenhuett-Faust Hotel, the newly refurbished Giles Hotel is under new ownership. The historic character of the structures and grounds has been maintained. Imagine enjoying a restful sleep after checking out all the historic district of Comfort has to offer just blocks from the hotel. For events, the Ingenhuett on High Event Center next door is a beau tiful venue for special occasions.

There are several antique shops within a few city blocks of High Street. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a light breakfast at the 8th Street Market while perusing the treasures within. As you drive in or out of the historic district the Wandering Calf bakery and coffee shop is on Hwy 27 just off the Hwy 87 cutoff. The Lobby Coffee Shop in a former theater is just off Hwy 27 as well. High’s Café, Huckleberry’s and Food for the Soul Bistro on High Street are great venues to enjoy hometown food and drink. Comfort Pizza offers outdoor dining. The Cypress Creek Inn on Hwy 27 offers fine dining.

The “backyard” open space between Hwy 27 and High Street is where area musicians perform and events are held.  It is conveniently located between the shops and cafes along High Street and Newsome Wines and the Hill Country Distillers on Hwy 27.

Along with the numerous antique shops, there are newer boutiques open now, like Peachy Llama, the Elephant Story and Hens & Heifers. Studio Comfort Texas is an outstanding art studio and shop featur ing area and national artists. You can find paintings, sculptures and jewelry there.

If you’re pursuing the history of the area, the for mer Comfort State Bank building houses the Comfort Heritage Foundation which offers a wealth of informa tion about the buildings and monuments in the area.

If you wish to visit some beautiful wineries, just north on Hwy 27 outside of Comfort are the Bending Branch and Singing Waters wineries that offer great wines and beautiful Hill Country views. Bending Branch does have a tasting room on High Street next to Ursa Vineyard’s tasting room. The Comfort Meet Market is a fun place to visit with friends.

Make plans to visit Comfort when there are a variety of holiday events planned.

Cultivar Farms, located at 122 Commerce in Boerne, is an initiative sponsored by the Hill Country Mission for Health (HCMH) focusing on educating about vegetable growing and its nutritional benefits. Members donate instruction and leadership designed to reach across socioeconomic and age barriers, encour aging the enjoyment and experience of gardening.

HCMH is a medical ministry providing charitable primary healthcare for eligi ble low-income, uninsured adults resid ing in Kendall County and surrounding communities through strong non-gov ernmental support. Because many HCMH patients struggle with diabetes, Cultivar Farms was founded with the purpose of providing healthy fruits and vegetables to offset packaged goods that contain non-healthy ingredients.

Master Gardeners Shirley Smith and Judy Beauford have been the co-coordina tors for the operations of the garden since 2015. Michael Bell, also a Master Gardener, has been volunteering for two years and is transitioning to take over as coordinator.

In the beginning, groups from the YMCA in Boerne volunteered with the planting and maintenance of the Summer, Fall and Winter gardens. There are sixteen rows, 30 feet long, maintained to grow many gar den vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, squash, kale, Swiss chard, beans, okra, onions, watermelons and cantaloupes. Currently, the output from the garden is between 1700 and 1900 pounds of pro duce per year, mostly donated to the Hill Country Family Services and the HCMH clinic.

In October, the Boerne Chapter of Young Men’s Service League offered 400 hours in which they weeded, mulched, maintained the walkways and refurbished the store room. If you or one of your groups are interested in volunteering, please contact Michael Bell at allenpoke.72@gmail. They would love your assistance in keeping this beautiful garden thriving for years to come!

Turkey Trot Tara’s

Brings Families Together to Celebrate Thanksgiving

According to Runners World, the first Turkey Trot was run in 1896 in Buffalo, New York. Six people ran an eight-kilometer race, and only four of them finished - one blamed his late breakfast. But Buffalo kept hosting the race, and with this year's race, it's the oldest continuous foot race in the U.S.  Turkey Trots have become a national tra dition on Thanksgiving morning in communities all over America.

This November 24, starting at 8 a.m. Tara Bové will host her 16th annual Tara’s Turkey Trot.  The three- or six-mile run/walk starts from her home (8612 Fairway Green Drive, Fair Oaks Ranch) and finishes in her front yard with refreshments, mimosas and treats!  Tara’s Turkey Trot began in 2006 when Tara and a group of moms were train ing for marathons. The idea was planted for this annual tradition after reading about something similar in a Cooking Light magazine. What started with a small group of fifteen friends and neighbors has grown significantly over the years. “It’s all about community and providing an opportunity to pause on a day typically filled with over-con sumption, to honor God and give thanks.”

The Trot requires zero training and is an opportunity for neighbors of all ages to come together to celebrate gratitude in the commu nity and purposely move our bodies on a day when most of us will enjoy a little too much of that wonderfully-prepared food.

The race provides a low-stress, positive moment for families to do something together during the holidays. Although there is no entry fee, over the years various ministries have bene fited through participants' generosity in raising thousands of pounds of food for Hill Country Daily Bread. They have contributed hundreds of dollars to organizations like Partnership to End Addiction and foreign mission groups.

This year, Tara is partnering with the Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center. On the morning of the Trot donations will be accepted of new fall and light winter boys' and girls' clothing sizes newborn to 5T; boys and girls toddler shoes sizes 5 to 8; and crib sheets. Financial donations are also accepted.

Roll right out of bed or run in a costume – you will find neighbors as well as their out-of-town guests gathering at Tara's. The benefit is know ing you will mitigate some of the calories you'll be consuming a few hours later - whether you walk or are a competitive runner. There will be a water station, laughs, new friendships made, and friends cheering neighbors on!

So come on out and help us support The Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center! Huge thanks to Franklin Park Boerne Assisted Living and Memory Care for sponsoring the food at this year’s event!   For more information or to register visit Tara’s Turkey Trot page on Facebook.

Cooler Fall Weather Brings

Adventures for the Whole Family

Here in the Texas Hill Country, we will start to enjoy cooler weather in November. That offers us the opportunity to get out of the house and away from the office to enjoy all the wonderful things our area has to offer. Being outside during fall weather is invigorating and conducive to exploring new venues and activities. Farmer’s markets’ vendors will continue to entice us with healthy fruits and vegetables plus a wide variety of other products. In fact, you can find farmer’s markets in most towns in the Hill Country. Within short distances we can enjoy nature: in Bexar County, there is Phil Hardberger Park at 13203 Blanco Rd. and Bullis County Park at 27583 Old Blanco Rd. In Comal County, you’ll find the Guadalupe River State Park at 3350 Park 31 off State Highway 46 West. And here at home, we can enjoy Boerne City Park & Cibolo Nature Center at 106 City Park Rd., Boerne City Lake Park at 1 City Lake Rd. off of IH-10 north of Boerne, and Joshua Springs Park at 716 FM 289, Comfort. If you’re wanting a scenic drive to experience more of the Hill Country, try the locations listed here.

For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the boun tiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradi tion, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweat er-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

“Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

Insider Tips for Hosting:

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cran berry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegeta bles such as butternut squash and pumpkin.”

• Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lov ers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.

• Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

• “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with bur nished brass for warm fall vibes.”

• An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.”

• Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.”

• To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have con fidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!”

• As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”

Wine Pairing

According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red avail able with some sparkling thrown in.

“Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”

Thanksgiving Pies To-Go

To share a bountiful Thanksgiving feast with family and friends, it is really important to serve a fabulous dessert that everyone will want to taste. And what better way to accomplish that than ordering or picking up a pie from your favorite restaurant! That way you'll know it will be good and you only have to serve it. Some of our favorite places to pick up pies to-go include Bumdoodlers Lunch Company, Hungry Horse Restaurant and Catering and Tootie Pie Company Boerne. Of course, you can always eat a slice on-site but you don't want to deprive your Thanksgiving dinner guests from the opportunity to share those crispy crusts and fragrant fillings.

All of the aforementioned shops will take orders for pies to be picked up before Thanksgiving Day. Bumdoodlers stacks hundreds of pies in its shop to make it easy for shoppers to pick up their orders. They make extra for those who have forgotten dessert during all the planning. Hungry Horse will make the usual amount of pies for that season but have no problem filling orders year-round. Tootie Pies always carries a variety of pies to be taken out but I'd call in early to be sure you can select just the kind of pie you wish to serve.

Boerne offers a wealth of fabulous restaurants and cafes so you'll be sure to find just what you want to top off that special Thanksgiving meal!

The apple pie (front center) and berry crumble (right) are from Tootie Pie Co. Boerne - Main Street. The peanut butter chocolate cream pie (left) is from Bumdoodlers Lunch Co., Boerne.

The blueberry pie (back center) is from Hungry Horse Restaurant and Catering, Boerne.
